5-0 out of 5 stars What, me worry?
Until fairly recently, my internet access was by way of phone modem, and my e-mail software was, to put it mildly, archaic. Even worse, the dial-up service to which I had access required a toll call. Needless to say, my on-line time was spent, for the most part, in brief spurts: Get on; get what I need (mostly just e-mail); get off.

Given this "get on; get off" modus operandi, I didn't need to worry too much about people hacking into my computer (a Macintosh); the window of opportunity my machine presented to hackers was pretty small, to put it mildly. But I still managed to get Windoze-sourced virus attachments to e-mail I received. On the Mac, these manifested themselves as text files having a vbe extension, meaning that they would run under Visual Basic on Windoze machines. On a Mac, of course, no damage is done. (I was helped more than a little by Microsoft, which continues to cripple Visual Basic for the Mac, limiting it to just a macro programming language as part of the MS Office suite. I couldn't have run these programs if I had wanted to.) But, using a text editor, I at least had the opportunity to scan these Visual Basic programs, to see "what made them tick."

Then (fairly recently, as I wrote), I upgraded to a broadband (cable modem) internet connection. And, since my Mac of choice is a laptop, with ultra-low energy consumption and other similar benefits, I tend to leave it on all (well, at least MOST) of the time. So I thought it prudent to install some sort of protection against hackers (and against the possibility that someone might try to write Mac-specific viruses and worms, despite the fact that 95% of personal computers are NOT Macs). Enter Norton Internet Security for the Mac. This inexpensive "insurance" software contains two parts: a software "Personal Firewall" and Norton AntiVirus ("NAV"), the latest version of Norton's "SAM" (Symantic Antivirus for the Mac). Each module is flexible in the way it can be customized for one's personal use. (For example, NAV preferences can be set so that archived files are not scanned [once they are scanned initiallly for contamination], saving significant scanning time subsequently.)

I've now used Norton Internet Security for a few months, and am pleased to report that it does what it is advertised to do, unobtrusively and in the background. The Personal Firewall log tells me that, on average, there are upward of 50 or 60 daily attempts to "ping" my computer, all denied. (A fair percentage of these has been from my broadband service, but the service's lack of success at entry doesn't seem to negatively affect our relationship.) The NAV log tells me that, since installation, only one active Mac virus has been discovered and, of course, neutralized. And, not that it was ever a problem, but it seems as if the "stable as a rock" OS is even more stable, if that is possible.

Is there a downside? Well, I no longer see any of those Visual Basic attachments, so it's fair to say that my VB-for-the-Mac programming skills have never really left the starting block. But, then, neither have Microsoft's, so I'm not complaining.

An interesting aside: In preparing this review, I did a websearch on the "Alfred E. Newman" brief description at the top, wanting to make sure that it ended up being punctuated correctly. Among the search "hits" I found was one for a Peachpit Press book on internet security for the Macintosh, having precisely this title. My apologies to Peachpit Press. But, well, a good idea is STILL a good idea, irrespective of its originator.

Highly recommended for all Mac users.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Easy to Install
When I received this pkg. I was prepared to call my "computer literate" friend but decided to see how far I could proceed in installing this on my own. The directions were clear and everything went smoothly. Now, I'll not be accused of passing any viruses nor will I receive any! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

A firewall is a program designed to protect Internet-connected PCs from hacker attacks, and users of vulnerable PCs should invest in a good one. By a good one, we don't mean McAfee Firewall 3.0. There's a fine security program somewhere in this package, but it's buried deep beneath this utility's technical issues, a horrific tech support conundrum, and the embarrassing and wholly unprofessional errors in its documentation.

We tested McAfee Firewall in two configurations. The first consisted of a single Windows 98 SE computer connected directly to a cable modem. For the other, we installed McAfee Firewall on a Windows Me PC that served as an Internet-sharing gateway for a network of five computers, enabling them to access the Internet via a single cable modem connection.

The former installation went well. McAfee Firewall 3.0 installed uneventfully, detected the Internet connection, and prompted us to configure it to allow filtered Internet access to various programs. The latter, a more sophisticated setting, utterly baffled McAfee Firewall. It generated errors immediately when first activated and permanently blocked Internet access for the entire network.

Network Associates' technical support line urged us to visit a free Web site. Since our Internet connection was broken, we checked out the phone support options. They were available--via a 900 number with a $2.95 per minute charge. We can understand the need for Network Associates (and, in all fairness, its competitors) to charge for support time, but in a case where the Web site is inaccessible due to a company's own product, the company should provide an alternative.

We used our press credentials to get some answers, and Network Associates assured us that the errors we encountered were very rare. However, the representative couldn't appease our concerns with the tech support catch-22, nor could she assure us of a timely solution to another problem: parts of both the online and physical documentation were bewilderingly cobbled from earlier versions of McAfee Firewall, which had a different interface from Firewall 3.0. The docs refer to menus and dialogs that don't exist in this version, making them effectively useless. That's unforgivable in the case of such a complex, dynamically configurable product.

When it works, McAfee Firewall 3.0 is a secure shield between your PC and the Net at large. It passed the most stringent security tests at Steve Gibson's Web site (www.grc.com) without a hiccup. Getting to that point wasn't worth the hassle, though; until Network Associates irons out the kinks, we strongly suggest using a superior, proven firewall such as Norton Firewall or Zone Labs ZoneAlarm. --Joel Durham, Jr. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Waste Software
Waste Software I have ever owned. Caused constant system instability. Cannot even use my internet connection while this software is installed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cannot log on to DSL server
After installing this I had problems logging on to my DSL provider. It was buggy from the start - I uninstalled this and very disappointed that I wasted my money on this. I couldnt return it so I am stuck with it! :(

1-0 out of 5 stars If negative stars were possible..........
Absolutely the worst piece of software I have ever owned... Caused constant system instability, and even the uninstall caused problems... and forget about support from mcafee, you're not going to get it.... save your money and allow all the hackers in the world in, because they are not going to be as damaging as this piece of software.

1-0 out of 5 stars This firewall is horrible.
I have used many different varieties of firewall software in the past and I have found this to be one of the worst. Most firewalls that I tried had bugs and/or were lacking key features that are of vital importance for good security. One big problem with McAfee Firewall 3 is that the user is not allowed to create "deny always" port assignments. This means that each time you connect to a website that requests a port that is outside of the normal range you will be asked if you want to allow it. If you say yes, it will always allow communication on that port, regardless of what site is requesting it. This is an utter failure in security because as time goes by, you will have eventually allowed everything -- or face being annoyed by constant pop-up windows asking if you wish to allow communication on port x. Bad news.

1-0 out of 5 stars McAfee Firewall + AOL is a Disaster
If you have AOL and are thinking about purchasing a firewall, I strongly advise against it until McAfee improves its product so it will work with AOL.

When I first attempted to install the product, I was unable to connect to the internet, but was able to connect to AOL. Using a backup computer, I chatted with a tech via live chat. The tech pointed me to the article on the McAfee website on "How to Configure McAfee Firewall 3 for AOL". After much effort, I finally was able to connect to the internet. However, I was still getting messages indicating that something was not right. I used the software, problems and all, for awhile and then decided to try to fix the problem. I uninstalled the firewall and then reinstalled it once again trying very carefully to follow the directions provided by McAfee. After I did this, I was unable to connect to the internet, but still able to connect to AOL. I decided to "junk" the software and uninstalled the firewall. However, after uninsntalling the firewall this time, I still could not connect to the internet. Once again I contacted McAfee via live chat (using backup computer) and was provided with instructions to manually uninstall the firewall. I was informed that there was probably some files left on the computer that related to the firewall, and told that the manual uninstall should take care of the problem. The directions assumed you still had the firewall installed. I asked the tech if that meant I should reinstall it. He said no and to just start where you edit the registry. After following all these instructions to edit the registry, I found that only one file folder relating to the firewall remained in the registry. After deleting it and rebooting, I still was unable to connect to the internet.

At this point I am totally disgusted with the product. Now I can't even connect to the internet with my good computer and I'm still trying to figure out how to correct the problem.

So, if you have AOL and are thinking about purchasing the Firewall 3.0, please take heed and do so at your own risk. I hope this article will prevent others from suffering like I have over the installation of something that should have been "a piece of cake"! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Rebates
There are two upgrade rebates for this bundle for 2004, one for the Norton SystemWorks, which is listed for this product, and one for the Norton Personal Firewall, which is not, but it is listed under the individual product (Search Norton Firewall 2004).

Combined with the occasional Amazon 'bundle' rebate, you can get this for free. Which, considering some of the reviews, might be what it is worth to you. I haven't had problems other than it slowing down the bootup process, but this was on a fresh install on a new hard drive. It was painfully slow the first couple of days at startup, until XP 'cached' it or something.

5-0 out of 5 stars No Problems with Norton SystemWorks/Personal Firewall 2004
I'm not a computer geek - all I want is complete protection against viruses and hackers and Norton gives me just that.
Apparently most of the reviewers have experienced some problems after installing the Norton product, but since I encountered none, I have to wonder if it was the Norton software or something else. Although I have noticed that a decent amount of RAM is helpful in order to prevent Norton from slowing down your computer.
I have been using Norton for the past nine years and never had any virus problems or intrusions on any of my computers. After you install Norton and you can pretty much stop worrying about viruses and hackers. Updating virus definitions is a breeze thanks to "Live Update".
It's just getting better and better over the years. I can only highly recommend this software.

1-0 out of 5 stars Norton Sytem Works; a disaster
I would not recommend this software to my worst enemy. When I used its diagnostic and repair software it made the computer worse, rather than making it run faster. It has some weird file rearrangement program, that is obviously antithetical to Microsoft. The last straw was when it wouldn't let me access my ISP to use the internet. The crowning touch was when Amazon.Com charged me a $40 restocking fee, after I returned the damn thing.

1-0 out of 5 stars BEWARE of ANY NORTON PRODUCT!
Do NOT buy ANY Symantec Product UNLESS YOU WILL NEVER HAVE A NEED FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE - THERE IS NONE! I have just spent 4 hours AFTER HAVING PAID for SUBSCRIPTION RENEWAL to my firewall trying to get my renewal activated. After going through 15 menus on-line to try and email customer service, I was given a form. I entered the info. When I finally got an email response, it had nothing to do with my question, then told me if it didn't help, I would have to REPEAT THE ENTIRE ON-LINE Process! I then called their "Customer Service" line - PUT ON HOLD FOR 30 MINUTES! Finally had to redo renewal by phone without answer to question. This is typical of ANY NORTON PRODUCT CUSTOMER SERVICE!

1-0 out of 5 stars rebate information is not correct
Be aware - there is not a $100 rebate for this product. The $35 rebates are identical and you also must provide proof of purchase, or UPCs from each box. So, since there are 3 rebate forms and only 2 sets of proof of purchase items (one set of UPCs and one set on the inside of the boxes), you will not qualify.

I verified this with Symantec who claims this is a mistake.

Does anyone know different? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Firewall, Caching, Proxy software
Great security product from Microsoft. And it's also good web caching and proxy software.

Wizards make installation straight-forward. Lots of options that can be configured. The software can operate as either a Firewall or as Web Cache or both.

If you want to setup a VPN, there is a wizard that makes it a snap. Incredibly simple.

Requires Windows 2000 service pack 1 before installing. If you're running MS Proxy 2.0, this will import your previous settings.

Packet filtering options are great. Can configure certain events to send email, or simply log to the Win2000 Event log.

Can configure SMTP so that arriving email that contains specific types of attachments are rejected or delayed (for inspection). (For example, any email containing ".exe" or ".vbs" can be stopped.) Also, email from certain addresses or domains can be rejected. These SMTP filters may not be possible however if you install ISA Server on the same machine that runs MS Exchange. I haven't figured that one out for certain yet. I remember getting a warning message that if the SMTP filter is enabled, something regarding Exchange RPC ... ? ...

Lots of good features ! ... Read more
