1-0 out of 5 stars Uncomplimentary
The "Manual" of 28 pages must be printed from the web site-not the CD and is an exercise in futility since nothing applies to the program on the CD. Error codes e.g. 530 stop all action but there is no way to determine what the error is. The company web site is in Australia and totally impregnable except to purchase more of their sorry wares. It was totally useless in uploading my web site to GoDaddy. I'll try to get a refund...

5-0 out of 5 stars Full-featured and simple to use
This is one of the easiest ftp programs I've used and it has some surprising features that put it in the same league with more expensive programs. For example, you can edit a text file right off a remote server, set UNIX file permissions and perform remote file maintenance if you have authorization to do so on the remote server. These are advanced features that one doesn't expect in an entry-level ftp program.

What makes it easy to use is the fact that the user interface is similar to Windows explorer, with all of the same functions, including drag and drop. However, what sets this ftp program apart from any that I've used is its ability to connect to multiple remote servers simultaneously. That puts it in a class in itself.

I've used a number of ftp programs and this one has become my personal favorite and the one I recommend. It will not overwhelm inexperienced users with a bewildering array of options, yet does everything power users need. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars beats the old mac extension
I purchased Conflict Catcher to replace the existing extension that came with 9.1 because of problems with the software. It crashes, hogs some memory and has limited function compareable to the most colorful Conflict Catcher which has more function than a hard bound encyclopedia. Its function is apparent during the start up and you can adjust the icons to its smaller size to avoid less clutter on the desktop upon startup. You can make multiple sets of extensions to reduce the amount of existing extensions needed so the computer can run smoothly without slowing down. If there is conflict with a particular extension software, the Conflict catcher will alert you to it so you can make a decision to ignore the problem extension software entirely, or even better, to delete the offending extension to ensure a smooth ride to your desktop. ... Amazon.com Product Description

P.P.I.R.T. is password protection information retrieval technology to safeguard information on your PC against hackers and thieves. This full-featured software suite includes programs for encryption, decryption, making files unrecoverable, recovering files from a stolen computer, and much more. It was designed by ex-computer hackers, law enforcement, ex-military personnel, and ex-computer thieves.

The encryption software is intelligent enough to delete your most important information, reboot the computer, make your files invisible, or e-mail valuable information to you anywhere. If your computer is lost or stolen, Tracker can find it across the Internet or through a telephone connection. With support from CyberCrime's Response Team, law enforcement and your insurance company will be contacted with a full report on your computer, including type, serial number, the IP and domain name, and personal contact information.

The suite also includes Eliminator, an anti-computer forensics program. It will go through all directories and effectively destroy information so that it remains private, in the event your computer is stolen or confiscated. The suite includes mail encryption software as well. Encrypt one or more files with a password and automatically e-mail files along with a message to a user. Once the user receives the files using the free decrypter, the user will be able to decrypt them back to its original format. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

A firewall is a program designed to protect Internet-connected PCs from hacker attacks, and users of vulnerable PCs should invest in a good one. By a good one, we don't mean McAfee Firewall 3.0. There's a fine security program somewhere in this package, but it's buried deep beneath this utility's technical issues, a horrific tech support conundrum, and the embarrassing and wholly unprofessional errors in its documentation.

We tested McAfee Firewall in two configurations. The first consisted of a single Windows 98 SE computer connected directly to a cable modem. For the other, we installed McAfee Firewall on a Windows Me PC that served as an Internet-sharing gateway for a network of five computers, enabling them to access the Internet via a single cable modem connection.

The former installation went well. McAfee Firewall 3.0 installed uneventfully, detected the Internet connection, and prompted us to configure it to allow filtered Internet access to various programs. The latter, a more sophisticated setting, utterly baffled McAfee Firewall. It generated errors immediately when first activated and permanently blocked Internet access for the entire network.

Network Associates' technical support line urged us to visit a free Web site. Since our Internet connection was broken, we checked out the phone support options. They were available--via a 900 number with a $2.95 per minute charge. We can understand the need for Network Associates (and, in all fairness, its competitors) to charge for support time, but in a case where the Web site is inaccessible due to a company's own product, the company should provide an alternative.

We used our press credentials to get some answers, and Network Associates assured us that the errors we encountered were very rare. However, the representative couldn't appease our concerns with the tech support catch-22, nor could she assure us of a timely solution to another problem: parts of both the online and physical documentation were bewilderingly cobbled from earlier versions of McAfee Firewall, which had a different interface from Firewall 3.0. The docs refer to menus and dialogs that don't exist in this version, making them effectively useless. That's unforgivable in the case of such a complex, dynamically configurable product.

When it works, McAfee Firewall 3.0 is a secure shield between your PC and the Net at large. It passed the most stringent security tests at Steve Gibson's Web site (www.grc.com) without a hiccup. Getting to that point wasn't worth the hassle, though; until Network Associates irons out the kinks, we strongly suggest using a superior, proven firewall such as Norton Firewall or Zone Labs ZoneAlarm. --Joel Durham, Jr. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Waste Software
Waste Software I have ever owned. Caused constant system instability. Cannot even use my internet connection while this software is installed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cannot log on to DSL server
After installing this I had problems logging on to my DSL provider. It was buggy from the start - I uninstalled this and very disappointed that I wasted my money on this. I couldnt return it so I am stuck with it! :(

1-0 out of 5 stars If negative stars were possible..........
Absolutely the worst piece of software I have ever owned... Caused constant system instability, and even the uninstall caused problems... and forget about support from mcafee, you're not going to get it.... save your money and allow all the hackers in the world in, because they are not going to be as damaging as this piece of software.

1-0 out of 5 stars This firewall is horrible.
I have used many different varieties of firewall software in the past and I have found this to be one of the worst. Most firewalls that I tried had bugs and/or were lacking key features that are of vital importance for good security. One big problem with McAfee Firewall 3 is that the user is not allowed to create "deny always" port assignments. This means that each time you connect to a website that requests a port that is outside of the normal range you will be asked if you want to allow it. If you say yes, it will always allow communication on that port, regardless of what site is requesting it. This is an utter failure in security because as time goes by, you will have eventually allowed everything -- or face being annoyed by constant pop-up windows asking if you wish to allow communication on port x. Bad news.

1-0 out of 5 stars McAfee Firewall + AOL is a Disaster
If you have AOL and are thinking about purchasing a firewall, I strongly advise against it until McAfee improves its product so it will work with AOL.

When I first attempted to install the product, I was unable to connect to the internet, but was able to connect to AOL. Using a backup computer, I chatted with a tech via live chat. The tech pointed me to the article on the McAfee website on "How to Configure McAfee Firewall 3 for AOL". After much effort, I finally was able to connect to the internet. However, I was still getting messages indicating that something was not right. I used the software, problems and all, for awhile and then decided to try to fix the problem. I uninstalled the firewall and then reinstalled it once again trying very carefully to follow the directions provided by McAfee. After I did this, I was unable to connect to the internet, but still able to connect to AOL. I decided to "junk" the software and uninstalled the firewall. However, after uninsntalling the firewall this time, I still could not connect to the internet. Once again I contacted McAfee via live chat (using backup computer) and was provided with instructions to manually uninstall the firewall. I was informed that there was probably some files left on the computer that related to the firewall, and told that the manual uninstall should take care of the problem. The directions assumed you still had the firewall installed. I asked the tech if that meant I should reinstall it. He said no and to just start where you edit the registry. After following all these instructions to edit the registry, I found that only one file folder relating to the firewall remained in the registry. After deleting it and rebooting, I still was unable to connect to the internet.

At this point I am totally disgusted with the product. Now I can't even connect to the internet with my good computer and I'm still trying to figure out how to correct the problem.

So, if you have AOL and are thinking about purchasing the Firewall 3.0, please take heed and do so at your own risk. I hope this article will prevent others from suffering like I have over the installation of something that should have been "a piece of cake"! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

This is the 5-user version of this product

Norton Personal Firewall 2001 3.0 is part of a family of Norton products designed to offer the home user the protection enjoyed by corporate networks. These include Norton Internet Security, the highly respected Norton AntiVirus package, and the Internet Security Family Edition, which offers parental controls.

Most Internet users these days use dial-up accounts, and the random nature of connecting and the dynamically assigned IP addresses offer them a modicum of protection against the misguided souls who derive pleasure from hacking into PCs. The risk is much greater if you have a permanent connection, and that's why most corporate networks employ protection tools known as firewalls to keep out the bad guys. However, soon many home users are going to enjoy continuous Net connections, thanks to flat-rate, unmetered phone charging and permanent high-speed ADSL or cable modem links. And these unwary users will be very vulnerable to external attack. To put it another way: home users are going to need firewall protection very soon.

Norton Personal Firewall 2001 3.0 is a hybrid package, combining firewall functionality with privacy controls, and runs under Windows 95, 98, 2000, and Me, as well as NT Workstation 4.0. At its heart, Norton Personal Firewall is a rule-based interactive "learning" firewall, supporting both inbound and outbound filtering. The firewall itself will block ActiveX controls and Java applets, as well as more basic TCP/IP attacks, and has special built-in rules designed to block hack attacks or other intrusive spyware.

The big problem with firewalls is their unbelievable complexity--normally, configuring one makes rocket science look easy. However, Symantec has hidden many of the complexities of a firewall behind a simple front end: users can simply choose between low, medium, or high levels of protection. But if you do want to tweak, you can still drill down to fine-tune Norton Personal Firewall's security configuration. If you spend a lot of time online, sooner or later you'll need firewall protection, and Norton Personal Firewall 3.0 is arguably the best on the market. --Roger Gann
