Amazon.com Review

Macromedia is certainly one of the more technologically aggressive of the major software publishers, and now they are one of the first of the big boys (if not the first) to deliver a mainstream application fully compatible with Apple's new operating system, Mac OS X.

Freehand 10 includes numerous new features in three areas: new illustration tools, improved productivity, and multiple output options such as PDF, HTML, and Flash. Freehand 10 also supports the IPTC header file information for services that take advantage of such information, such as Knight Ridder and the Associated Press.

Illustrators will love "true contour gradients," a new feature that helps create the most realistic shading we've seen in a 2-D illustration program. Create gradients of irregular shapes, control the amount of shading at any point, and use multicolor gradients.

Freehand's improved pen tool now looks and behaves exactly the same as it does in Flash and Fireworks. In fact, the whole Freehand interface now looks, feels, and behaves just like other Macromedia products, while still managing to look like whatever platform it's running on. For example, Freehand under Mac OS 9 looks like a classic Mac app, but the same app takes on the Aqua interface when running under OS X.

Freehand 10 targets users who create material for print and the Web. Flash export, in the form of SWF files, has been improved, and conversely, a designer can now import Flash actions and assign them to objects in Freehand. Also, Freehand now has a Flash runtime engine complete with controller panel, so that Flash actions and files destined for SWF export can now be tested within Freehand.

For those who create multiple-page documents, Freehand's Master Pages can be used to manage a 32,000-page document, sharing templates and page attributes while retaining the ability to edit master pages at any time. Child pages update dynamically when a master page is changed.

For Mac OS X users, launching a major app like Freehand without first starting up the Classic environment is a real thrill. The native OS X interface is a nice complement to Freehand, and it makes us anxious to see other Macromedia products running under X. Freehand 10 is an important upgrade for existing users, and for new ones, numerous new features make it easier to learn than ever. --Mike Caputo ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay with 9...or 8
As a long-time Freehand user, MacroMedia continues to disappoint. Hardy anything new, yet commands are different and it is much slower than the previous version (which itself was slower than the previous version).

MacroM has abandoned the print market anyway; I believe this is their last release of FreeHand. Its too bad, since it used to be a fine program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing!
Simply an amazing work of art. It's actually kind of sad how much Macromedia has us wrapped around it's genius little finger. If you're into vector graphics, this is your buy. Since, Illustrator 10 is bugged and Freehand is compatible with FLash, a new king shall rise.

All hail Freehand 10!! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Macromedia is on a mission to make Director the most used authoring tool for building exciting, interactive content not only for CD-ROM presentations but for the Web as well. The new version of Director, 8.0, is totally geared toward reaching that goal.

This is not the first version of Director to offer integrated Web authoring features, but Macromedia has refined Director into a streamlined production environment capable of outputting to a variety of formats.

Improved sound controls include behaviors linked to objects for building immersive audio tracks. This includes more precise audio control over multiple audio streams, including better management of looping tracks. Many file types can be imported, among them AIFF, WAV, SND, and MP3.

The Property Inspector is a new window for editing properties of a sprite or other member. The window changes according to which element is currently selected and shows properties for that selected member. If more than one member is selected, the Inspector reveals only the common properties.

Also new is Runtime Imaging, for what is essentially on-the-fly rendering of images. This results in rich and exciting graphics without the overhead of a large download. Developers also have control now over off-screen compositing, onscreen effects, and transitions. All of this is controllable through Lingo commands.

New Web-specific features include Publish, a command for saving to streaming Shockwave files using HTML templates; and Loader movies, for creating small looping movies that play while the body of the Shockwave file is downloading. Also, Shockwave content can now be resized while maintaining its aspect ratio in a browser window.

Numerous tweaks and enhancements make this release of Director an important tool for the interactive-content creator. If your interactive projects are now being delivered through more avenues than just CD-ROM, Director 8 can help pave the road. --Mike Caputo ... Read more

Adobe enters the arena of Web animation tools with LiveMotion 1.0, atool that's used to create vector-based animation for Web delivery. Many of theanimation-specific features are based on Adobe's After Effects, long a dominantplayer in the field of motion graphics and animation. If you've used AfterEffects, you'll feel comfortable immediately with LiveMotion.

In many ways, LiveMotion is a better tool for creating vector-based animation thanMacromedia's Flash, its very popular competitor. Using a timeline/keyframemetaphor, LiveMotion makes it easy to animate the properties of an object overtime. Position, scale, opacity, and rotation all can be controlled with relativeease. It's also painless to create HTML elements, such as animated rollovers formenus and graphics.

However, if you come from a Flash background, you might be a bit disappointedwith LiveMotion. For starters, there are no scripting features. Also,LiveMotion's compression isn't quite as good as Flash's. In a test in which thesame animation was exported from both Flash and LiveMotion, the .swf file thatwas created by LiveMotion was about 15% larger. Because file size and downloadrates are so critical to Web-based graphic design, it's important to be aware ofthis type of issue.

Despite these shortcomings, we found it easier to draw and animate by usingLiveMotion. Superior (in both form and function) bezier drawing tools make it asnap to set up ready-to-animate graphics. Again, Adobe has kept LiveMotion's"feel" in the family by ensuring that the drawing functions are very similar tothose of Illustrator.

If you're looking to create high-quality, interactive Web content, Flash mightbe the way to go, especially if you're more familiar with Macromedia's look andfeel. However, if animation--and not interactivity--is the goal, and you haveexperience with Adobe's other products, LiveMotion should be a good fit. All inall, this is a very good first release. --Mike Caputo ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Go Live for Macintosh
I purchased this with Photoshop 6.0 as a promotion and it is great for designing web graphics like buttons and adding shadows to your graphics, etc. The animations seem tricky, and it does not interface well with Dreamweaver like I hoped it would. It does not seem to be as easy to use as Flash or the other Macromedia products, but I heard that it is similar to After-Effects with the timeline feature and since I have that program too and want to learn how to use it, I felt that it would be better to stick to Adobe products for now. The interface with Photoshop and Illustrator is amazing. I am debating between using dreamweaver or GoLive as my Web Editor, and because of the Adobe interface I may stick to Go Live as well. My advice is is you have the Adobe products already try this out, but if you have Dreamweaver/Fireworks it may be better to get the Macromedia Flash product - it is the industry standard. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Simply THE best web dev combination
DreamWeaver Rocks. Fireworks Rocks. Together they make for a spectacular web design/development combination.

Dreamweaver is packed with features for the beginner through advanced web developer; it's easy and intuitive to use. It may take you a while to learn all the capabilities, but with each successive feature you discover and master, the development process becomes easier and faster.

Fireworks is the best in class web graphics software. It integrates very well with DreamWeaver. Creating animated GIFs is a snap, as is image optimization (file compression), image map creation, and exploring full tables (HTML and all!) for use in DreamWeaver.

You simply cannot go wrong with this package. Photoshop still has its place, but if you focus exclusively on the web and don't need to do exquisite image editing this bundle is all you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome
I've been doing web development since 1996 and, to be honest, I fought tooth and nail against giving up Windows Notepad as my web development tool of choice. Microsoft FrontPage really ruined web development software for me and I pretty much vowed to avoid such applications in the future. Fortunately, my boss insisted that I use Dreamweaver and even sent me off to classes to learn the nuts and bolts. And now I'm hooked.

Dreamweaver is simply awesome and I can't imagine ever going back. Whether your a novice or professional, you'll come to love Dreamweaver's simple interface and ability to tackle otherwise tedious tasks -- such as Cascading Style Sheets, tables, layers -- with ease. Adding Flash, Shockwave or Java is as simple as it can possibly be. I took classes on Dreamweaver, but only because my boss insisted. The software is pretty easy to learn, though those with web development experience will have a fuller understanding (and respect) for the capabilities of the product.

The single most powerful part of Dreamweaver is the use of templates, which allow you to use the same look and feel across multiple pages and have all those pages updated when you make changes to the template. This alone will save you hours!

Another great thing about Dreamweaver is that creates clean HTML. This is something that any developer who has ever had to edit the HTML directly will respect -- especially if you've ever tried to make sense of FrontPage HTML nonsense.

Finally, the FTP application in Dreamweaver is outstanding. It keeps track of every page, graphic, link, etc. in your site and any change to any of them is cascaded through the entire site -- automatically updating links where necessary. With a simple click of a button your site is uploaded to your webserver.

There are so many features I haven't covered, but with the little I have this product is worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stupidly Discontinued!
Get Macromedia Dreamweaver 4. They have turned this once great web design package into a hybrid cross of something that looks like Netscape/Flash and called it Dreamweaver MX 2004.

I used Dreamweaver MX 2004 for a month, uninstalled it and went back to Dreamweaver 4. It really is that terrible and the work space is terribly cluttered making it very hard to work within.

Bottom Line -- Get Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 instead if you can find it. Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 is a very good web design package that knocks Dreamweaver MX 2004 for ten. You will simply hate Dreamweaver MX 2004 when you install it on your system. I nearly barfed after a month of using that *new* completely hostile and non-user friendly piece of unstable and slow excuse for a web design software program.

Get this instead ... if you can find it...

5-0 out of 5 stars Review for Dreamweaver 5
-This review is for Dreamweaver 5- I absolutely love this software. I had Adobe Go Live but I never seemed to take to it like I did with Dreamweaver. Once it was installed within a day, I had made several webpages. As I continued to use it I learned more and more intuitively without needing much guidance from the manual. As a user you can create your webpages visually or in code mode, this makes it a great option for anyone no matter what your skill - it can be adjusted to suit your needs. You can learn and develop your webpage skills as much or as little as you like. You do not need to be intimidated by it's high price. You can learn it and the cost is well worth the output. ...
I don't have to look for anything else, I have hit paydirt with this program! If you are using Front Page or any other visual interface for ease, you know that you are trapped into a forced format, get this program and you will understand the freedom of control without fear!

Fireworks, Photoshop, Fireworks, Photoshop. If you've been researchingWeb-graphics software, these two names are likely rattling around your headincessantly. So which program is right for you? Well, while Photoshop wranglesthe title of best overall high-end image editor year after year, it's still notthe most robust solution for Web graphics--that claim belongs to Fireworks 4.0.Dedicated to the Web-graphics world, each new Fireworks release strengthens itshold on its domain (no pun intended). 5-0 out of 5 stars Everything is editable, LOVELY
Macromedia has done a great job with this product; it is a comprehensive graphic creation package that works with both vector/based and pixel/based editing capabilities. Contrary to what all designers/developers think, FIREWORKS 4 integrates perfectly with Macromedia dreamweaver AND Macromedia Director.here are some of the things you can do with fireworks 4: *You can save a file as an editable png format and import it from director. You can go back to edit it using fireworks every time. Which is great, because now, we can consider that director has a developed vector/bitmap editor * Fireworks 4 gives a new meaning to the word wysiwyg (what you see is what you get) web creation tool. Rollovers are as easy to create as doing a drag and drop. And popup menus are very easy to create. You don't have to think about the programming. * Fireworks is a tool especially conceived for web graphics; hence, you only work with 72 dpi images and you can always preview them in the browser. without getting too much concerned about optimizing. * Fireworks is a very big boost in productivity, whether you work on Director or on Dreamweaver. it handles all the calculations and saving for you. so you don't have each time to calculate the image sizes and mull over how to compress it. * EVERYTHING in fireworks is editable and nothing you do is committing (like in other graphic creation software), you can always edit the fill of you objects, re-define the gradation inside, change the stroke, effect and fill. The texture, the transparency and even the texture of the stroke. Which could come very much in handy when one is creating rollovers. In other words.. Fireworks 4 is a great program to have if you want to increase your productivity in all that has to do with creating graphics for the screen. ... Read more

Dreamweaver UltraDev is an enhanced version of Macromedia'sleading Web-authoring tool. The standout additional feature is dynamiccontent, which is when pages have live links to databases or othertypes of server-side scripting. Most products of this type requireextensive manual coding, but UltraDev has an extensive library ofbuilt-in scripts, called Server Behaviors, that allow even moderatelysophisticated sites to be built with little or no code. Version 4 lookssimilar to its predecessor, but includes important changes that make itmore complete and easier to use.

One of the best new features is the split code and design view, whichlets you edit either the code or the visual design and see changesinstantly echoed between them. There is also built-in security, so youcan create login procedures and password-protected sites. Finally, theLive Objects wizards automatically create page elements to handlecommon tasks, such as a master/detail page set, or forms to insert andupdate records.

UltraDev supports three kinds of server-side scripting: Active ServerPages, JavaServer Pages, and Cold Fusion. Unfortunately, it does notsupport PHP, which is popular on Linux and Unix servers, althoughbecause UltraDev is extensible, there may be some third-party add-ins.The features for the three models are similar but not identical, although in every case there is excellent database support. Its greatstrength is that you can focus on designing your pages and let UltraDevhandle the data access code. You can even display live data at designtime, making it easier to get exactly the right appearance.

Everything in Dreamweaver is also in UltraDev, so this is the idealpackage for Web authors who need to add dynamic content with a minimumof fuss.

About Fireworks 4:

Fireworks is a dedicated Web graphics application. You can create bothvector and bit-map images, optimize them for Web pages, and addnumerous special effects for export direct to HTML.

The starting point is a familiar range of drawing and painting tools, such as shapes, lines, brushes, pens, and selection tools. In thedefault vector mode they create editable, scalable objects, and inbit-map mode they paint pixels. Fireworks supports layers andmasks--virtual overlaid surfaces that you can edit independently, enablingdesigners to achieve a wide range of effects. For example, you can varyopacity and blending to fine-tune the final appearance. Other Fireworkspanels include color, stroke, fill, and effects. There is also alibrary panel where you can store graphic elements for reuse.

A key feature for Web designers is optimization. Fireworks offersmaximum control over the critical tradeoff between quality and size. Atwo-up and four-up view lets you compare the quality of original andoptimized versions, using techniques such as reducing color depth andremoving unused colors. The software offers strong support for GIF,JPEG, and PNG image formats. Fireworks also lets you create animationthat is exported as an animated GIF. It will also generate JavaScriptto produce image rollovers and, in this new version, pop-up menus. There is great support for hotspots and slices, techniques for mappingor dividing an image to support HTML features. Integration withMacromedia's Dreamweaver 4 is better than ever in version 4 ofFireworks. Dreamweaver UltraDev 4/Fireworks Studio combines the twoproducts at a lower price. You can export to Dreamweaver--or launchFireworks directly from Dreamweaver--edit an image, and save it backwith all Fireworks-specific information preserved. --TimAnderson ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars If I could give 0 stars I would
Anyone running Mac OSX should not buy Fireworks MX. I've been using this product grudgingly for months and the amount of bugs and errors in this program are amazing. It's actually a joke around the office that I get angry at least once a day at Macromedia.

You'll read a lot of reviews around with "Macromedia Evangelists" who will give a glaring review of all things Macromedia without actually using the products on a day-to-day basis, or they'll accept the bugs because they love Macromedia so much.

I admit, I'm still a Fireworks lover, and I'd never switch to Imageready or anything else for that matter, to do my web design. But, as of today, I'm moving back to Fireworks 4 and running inside of Classic. You may be wondering, what could cause someone who's been Classic-free for months to go back. Let me give you a small sampling of some of the bugs in this version of Fireworks inside of OSX:

Eyedropper tool selects the inverse of the color you're selecting, so you have to select that color twice.

Crop tool doesn't crop document elements of documents with multiple frames and multiple layers (I just found this bug today and haven't done complete testing to find when it does and doesn't happen)

You cannot copy or paste text into or out of the program

Those are just a few of the bugs I've found with this program. So, my advice to you... DO NOT BUY THIS PROGRAM IF YOU ARE RUNNING MAC OS X. Wait until they release a bug fix, which hopefully they'll do soon. But as of today, Feb. 25th 2003, there has been no word or even rumor of a patch.

I hate to be a slammer of a Macromedia product but this one deserves it. Hopefully they'll fix it soon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Secret Goodness!
WebObjects is a framework for deploying database-driven webpages and services. While it does not have the same exposure as ColdFusion, ASP, PHP, etc etc, it is a very strong competitor. I came to it from a PHP and MySQL background, and while it took a couple of weeks to get to grips with the WebObjects outlook, it is now a total joy to work with.

The main thing about WebObjects that seperates it from the rest is the fact that it is an object-oriented system. Once you have the objects set up, you very rarely have to interact with the database at all, as the framework deals with all of the sql calls. Indeed, because of this fact, the database itself is totally removed from the logic, and so a vast range of databases can be used interchangeably: MySQL, OpenBase, Oracle, and any JDBC database. And relational databases are even easier, suprisingly enough, especially when compared to how difficult relationships are to follow with PHP.

Everyone working with any high-traffic databse-driven website should at the least check this out. I did, and now I'm a total convert. There is a free 30-day trial available at the apple website.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Apple Doesn't Tell You.
One of WebObjects best kept secrets is the EOModeler. The EOModeler allows you to design a database, create entity relationships [including foreign keys], encapsulate business logic in WO rules and stored procedures, and then generate/update your database from the model. All of this is done from within an Apple quality GUI, and it explicity supports OpenBase, Oracle, MSSQL Server, MySQL and Sybase [but it should work with any JDBC driver or JNDI driver].

Furthermore, you can then automatically generate an entire Java client application from this model. AND, you can reverse engineer a model and application from an existing database.

Outside of that, the Apple review tells you what you need to know [aside from the fact that the WebObjects server supports load balancing and remote application server access]. This is a fantastic product. Believe the hype! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the best VR tool!
There are quite a number of pano stitchers out there, but nothing approaches the ease of use, elegance, options and results of QTVR AS. Typical Apple: simple to use, clean interface, and a quality product. Stitching is excellent and saving options plentiful. Don't think that QTVR AS is only good for panos, though -- it makes wonderful objects and can also create full walkthroughs, also with grace and simplicity. A wonderfully finished product, despit being just version 1.0.1, but there really is nothing that needs to be changed, so why have another version? Well, one drawback -- it's not been upgraded to run under MacOS X, other than in Classic. Great pity!

1-0 out of 5 stars QuickTime VR Authoring Studio versus RealViz Stitcher
Is RealViz Stitcher worth (the money against) Apple's QuickTime VR Authoring Studio's? The first tech support call you make to Apple will cost you ($). Yes, that is ($) if you want to ask anything other than an installation question. Also, the software "chokes" - Apple's tech support term - on any high resolution image. It is not useful for anyone wanting to make prints of panoramas. Apple told me when I called pre-sales that they offered 90 days tech support - normal in the industry. But I neglected to ask what does that 90 days cover. It only covers installation. Forget it if you have any other questions. QuickTime VR Authoring Studio also does not support the Nikon Editor version of .jpg. So if you have a Nikon digital camera, be prepared to convert everything to the archaic pict format for this software. Yes, it will accept a .tif or photoshop .jpg, but it's internal process converts to a pict and if you want any semblance of quality you will need to convert to pict first. Do yourself a favor and avoid this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars QTVR authoring studio still a best bet!
An update is sorely missing but of course the next one will be OS X compatible - till then MAcOS 8,X and 9.X QTVR creators would be wise to buy a copy of QTVR-AS. This is one tool that makes it possible to combine a variety of non-aligned images into a workable object or panorama. This heightened degree of control over diverse input is very necessary when one starts building QTVRs for art type projects. When VRWORX fails to build an object or things just cannot be lined up correctly - Authoring studio will do the job and do it well!! Any time apple wants some user input on how to improve this product they can be contact me! i love it! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Since Macromedia launched Flash in 1996, it has grown into the de factostandard for development and delivery of high-impact, visually rich, interactiveWeb content. Flash MX promises a similar generational shift to the oneexperienced when Flash 5's enhanced ActionScript introduced an unprecedenteddegree of interactivity to the Web.

The most exciting new features in this version are those aimed at e-contentdevelopers and programmers. Integration with application servers such asColdFusion MX and Microsoft's .NET and Internet protocols like HTML, WebTV, andWAP make it possible to deliver Flash content to a range of platforms--from PCsto PlayStations to mobile phones.

But Flash MX also offers plenty to those who aren't part of a large team ofdesigners and programmers developing corporate sites. Novice users can takeadvantage of a range of prebuilt, customizable components, including scrollbars, buttons, list and combo boxes, and QuickStart templates for presentations, photo albums, ads, and more, making it possible to achieve great resultsquickly.

The Flash MX interface is now consistent with Dreamweaver and Fireworks. Nestedlayer folders and improved cursor feedback for frame adjustment make thetimeline more manageable, and the context-sensitive properties panel andcollapsing, dockable panels reduce screen clutter considerably. Vector drawingtools, one of Flash's weaknesses, have been largely overlooked, but there is anew Free Transform tool, which combines rotate, scale, and skew options. Video, another Flash weak spot, has fared much better with the inclusion of theSorensen Spark video codec. Users can import a variety of formats, includingMPEG, DV, and QuickTime. In addition, users can animate and script AVI and videoclip objects in the same way as bit maps, even using them on a mask layer.

Flash MX is backwards-compatible with version 5 (meaning users can publishversion 5 SWF files, although MX SWF files require the MX player), removing theonly argument for not upgrading. Those not yet convinced of the merits of Flashneed only look around. --Ken McMahon ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this program
I was hoping to purchase the commercial version of this program because the 2004 version isn't compatible with my Computer. I'm very familiar with this program's features though. I recommend over the 2004 edition any day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Flash 5
Well, it's not exactly the most SIMPLE program to use, I don't care who you are, it just isn't. Even so it's better than version 5, and no other program that makes SWF's comes close to the features of Flash MX.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent program made even better!
I'll grant you, the learning curve on Flash is steep. Once you get past that, Flash is a mandatory program in today's web environment. Now, with easier to learn functions and drag-and-drop ease, Flash MX can take it to the next level. You can incorporate QuickTime videos. You'll see improved workflow with more informative, easier to use menus. You can incorporate dynamic elements like never before. My personal favorites are the little touches that Macromedia made to just make the everyday tasks easier to do. Plus, the layer folders option is a stroke of genius (even if Adobe got there first). All-in-all, the first upgrade in years is well worth the wait. Also, it runs under both OS9.1 and OS10.1. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Macromedia's Dreamweaver MX is a topflight Web editor for dynamic sitesas well as static pages. Dreamweaver's excellent visual tools generate code thatworks across all the leading Web browsers, winning it the respect ofprofessionals. Its availability on the Mac as well as Windows is another strongfeature for designers. The product is also extensible, with a huge range ofthird-party add-ons available from Macromedia's Web site, many of them free ofcharge. There is great support for Internet standards, including cascading stylesheets, XHTML, and accessibility features. Built-in validating mechanisms makeit easy to check a page, and everything is highly configurable so you canspecify the standards you want to support.

This is a visual editor, which means you can create and edit a Web page byselecting items such as tables, forms, and images from a tabbed palette. TheProperties panel lets you specify details such as borders, styles, andhyperlinks, and you can also use the visual editor for frames and layers. Manydesigners also like to edit the underlying HTML, and this is where DreamweaverMX comes into its own. It supports either a pure code view or a split view thatlets you click seamlessly between the code and visual editors. A lot of thefeatures previously found in HomeSite, Macromedia's text-based Web editor, arenow integrated into Dreamweaver, including pop-up code hints, a snippets panelthat lets you keep handy pieces of code for reuse, and a tag chooser that letsyou grab the right tag from a list. An O'Reilly tag reference is built in.

Dreamweaver's template support deserves special mention. Templates give you aquick start with a number of predesigned pages. In Dreamweaver MX, they can alsobe used to lock down areas of the page, so that contributors can create and edita story without disturbing the design. Templates can be nested so that changesto an underlying template ripple through the pages that use it for powerfulsite-wide updates.

Macromedia used to market a product called Dreamweaver UltraDev, which allowedfor rapid development of Web applications featuring online databases, memberlogin, and other server-side elements. In Dreamweaver MX, this capability isbuilt in. It has also been extended, adding support for ASP.NET and PHP as wellas ColdFusion, JavaServer pages, and traditional ASP. Nonspecialists will findthemselves able to build rich dynamic pages, while the integrated code editormakes this a capable development product as well. In fact, Dreamweaver MX hasalso replaced ColdFusion Studio as the primary development tool for ColdFusionMX. It is a uniquely flexible package.

Overall, it's hard to find fault with Dreamweaver MX. It's true that itscomplexity and professional features make it harder to pick up than some rivalproducts. The abundance of panels and options can be confusing, and ahigh-resolution screen is required. In addition, the Studio MX products, whichinclude Dreamweaver, are a better value for those who need more than one of theMX series. However, this takes nothing away from the excellence of Dreamweaveras the first-choice tool for professionals. --Tim Anderson ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Slower and buggier than previous versions, if more powerful.
On the good side, we finally have OS X versions of these mainstay web design apps (Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash); on the bad side, they are so buggy that one wonders if OS 9 was really that bad at all. Overall, Dreamweaver on my G4/733 feels MUCH slower than 4.01 did on a G3/333.

For example, the behavior of dragging the panels on the right side is very inconsistant. E.g., when attempting to resize the CSS panel to be longer to show more styles in my file, the cursor often does not turn into the double-headed arrow to indicate dragability; or the cursor disappears completely; dragging sometimes works, but more often doesn't. Or, when in code view, dragging across text to select results in a nasty redraw problem, with the code flashing on and off in rapid succession until you've stopped dragging. It's like the document is having an epilectic seizure. And why haven't they put in a simple window split function? BBEdit has had this for years. They boast about how bit-chin' their HTML code view is, but jeeze, it leaves a lot to be desired (and no, I don't think switching to BBEdit should be a solution to that; I think Macromedia should do more than a half-baked job on the code editor, and then most of us wouln't need to bother with BBEdit). Or, in the Style Sheet edit window, styles are unordered, making it very hard to find a particular style.

And basic functions like launching the app, quitting, opening a file, opening the Site view, saving as, and so forth, are S - L - O - W. It's just a drag to use this software. We should be damanding far more from our application creators like Macromedia.

5-0 out of 5 stars WYSIWYG is what the Mac is famous for.
Dreamweaver has been my choice for web editing since I figured out what I was doing. I started with Adobe PageMill, so the logical step should have been GoLive. But, I had a choice and Dreamweaver won out.

Combining the functionality of Dreamweaver, and the dynamic engine of UltraDev, MX completes this program's journey to what the web should be. Roundtrip editing for Flash MX and Fireworks MX as well, make these programs a designer's dream suite.

Macromedia has made me a fan for life with the latest updates. Fully compatible with both OS X and OS 9. (This review is based on the pre-release download version.) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I like the programs, but I think it needs improvement.
I bought this package based on a friend's recommendation. Looking back I wish I had saved the money and just bought Dreamweaver. I think they are both great programs, but from my experience you need only need one. If you own Illustrator or Photoshop you can build your graphics there and import them into Dreamweaver. If you don't just buy Fireworks, you can build an entire site and all your graphics in this program.

I am a novice at web design, and I wanted to jump right in with setting up a site. I found both of the instructional guides a bit frustrating and overwhelming. I was surprize to find that I even though I had bought the Mac version, the instruction books were cross-platform for both PC and Mac, favoring the PC platform. (A HUGE turn-off for a Mac person like me.)

After doing the tutorials I tried to build my site by using both programs. I am mainly a print designer and was thinking that Dreamweaver and Fireworks like I use QuarkXPress and Illustrator, but it doesn't work that way.

Like I said before you only need one. I think they are both great programs, but I don't see the need to have both, which is why I gave it a four.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great program, documentation could be better
A complete novice in web design, I just spent 4 days developing an 8 page web site with Dreamweaver, which I had never used before. The web site's great, and I love the program. An excellent tutorial guides you through the basic steps, and Macromedia provides a 400+page downloadable reference manual. A bit bulky, and difficult to find what I needed, but the program itself is pretty intuitive, once you've worked through the tutorial. I still haven't figured out how to upload my HTML files using Dreamweaver (as far as I can tell, you're supposed to be able to), which is why I rate this only a 4; otherwise, from uploading graphics and text to layout and links, a user friendly program that will have you on the www in no time at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dreamweaver is a dream come true!
Dreamweaver is well beyond its opponets in web-design, and anybody who designs web pages should have this program! Packing every single tool you would need or ever want to make your website the way you want it, Dreamweaver is easy from the start. Although I'm not an actual owner of Dreamweaver, I have friends who own this product, and every one of them has been blown away bit it, including me. This program is easy to use, and for those who are still using old programs like "Visual Page", I suggest that you upgrade to this program, which you will never regret. Many people still stick with the old fashioned way of making mouse-overs, but Dreamweaver makes it easy, and this can be done in under a minute, without having to spend hours on Java coding. I personally like this program much more then Adobe "GoLive", which are the two leading web-design programs. Make your choice, but I think Dreamweaver is the true program that will make every website look incredible. It's worth the price tag, every cent! The day will come soon when I hope to have the priviledge of owning this program myself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Flash 5 is the Samurai Sword of Tools!!!!!
Who am I? I am a website designer, corporate trainer and Flash 5 designer/creator. I am Microsoft certified, CTT certified, M CIW D, A+. I-Net+, Net+, IBM certified recently. I know my stuff. This program rules! Version 5 has increased its ease of use, the dynamics of ActionScript has blossomed 4 times over, and things have also become more simple and user friendly. If you thought Flash 4 was an awesome weapon, then version 5 will rock your world once you learn the new abilities. IT IS NOT BUGGY like the other review claims. I have had Flash 5 since it was first available. Has it crashed on me once or twice? Yes. Why? Well, sometimes it just happens. Computers arenot perfect. Out of the few times it happened, it was either my fault, or when I was trying to use another program within Flash 5. Flash 5 has also been updated with a patch. I doubt you will have any problems my friends. Freehand 9 DOES NOT weight this package down!!! Freehand 9 lets you mock up and layout websites quickly to show your clients a "working quickie example". This saves me time over and over again! It also lets me create nicely streamlined graphics to use within Flash 5. Creating them in Freehand first can be easier than in Flash sometimes, the tools are also a bit better. Together, they become a hurricane of creative power to be unleashed upon your competitors! ActionScript is taken to a new level too. Forget the ActionScript you knew in Flash 4. Childs' play!!! It is a whole new ball game. The concepts, layout and theory are still the same, but the new commands, and means of using the..especially the new "dot notation" system is incredibly easy and quick! Ignore the other reviews that pooh, pooh this product. If they were right, Macromedia wouldnot have a BEST SELLING and one of the BEST RATED vector graphics programs that all of us PRO designers use. Don't get this suite if all you want to do is create a web page for your kitty or puppy. DO get this if your career needs to go further! Best Wishes and check out my book reviews for Flash 5 tutorial books hereon Amazon.

1-0 out of 5 stars Flash is extremely buggy now
Flash 4 was the pinnacle of flash-dom. This version crashes all the time, and Macromedia has not offered a fix.

1-0 out of 5 stars Freehand drags this package down
The tool-heavy approach to this software makes it very difficult to actually do anything with the software.
