1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother if you're running Panther with large files
Spent $100 elsewhere on this. I've used Norton in the past but had switched to TechTool. I decided to try them again. I was sadly mistaken.

First, I ran Disk Doctor. Got error 23005, which the support said to run Volume Recover. Nothing found there. Got the same error from Disk Doctor. Tried Disk DeFrag and it said that the directories were too large for "this version" of SystemWorks to defrag.

Useless. I'll be returning it and using TechTool again.

1-0 out of 5 stars SPEED DISK MAY DISABLE YOUR STARTUP DISK IN OS X
Using Speed Disk on OS X may disable your startup disk, and Symantec thinks so little of their customers, that they make you pay to fix the problem. The answer is to re-instal your system software. It's happened to 3 other people I know, so don't risk it. Good Luck!

1-0 out of 5 stars May Disable Your Startup Disk
UTILITIES 8 MAY DISABLE YOUR STARTUP DISK IN OS X IF YOU RUN SPEED DISK, AND THERE'S NO FREE PHONE SUPPORT! It's happened to 3 other people I know, and Symantec thinks so little of their customers, there's no free phone support, no exceptions! Don't risk it, get TechTool or DiskWarrior

4-0 out of 5 stars This program saved my butt
I bought a new G4 15" laptop with a bad screen. Before I sent the product back to be fixed, I imaged my hard drive with Carbon Copy Cloner. However, I forgot to check the integrity of the backup. Anyway, when I restored my system, I had cross linked files, bad data forks, mouse troubles, boot problems, etc. All it all it was a random mess that at times made me feel like the computer was on crack. I called up (computer company)and they said the X.3 disk utility would not fix my problems. Instead they suggested Norton. While the disk utility from Apple discovered nothing wrong, Norton found my system was full of major problems. Norton fixed everything and my machine is back to working great. The only problem I can say I had is I still cannot boot from the Norton CD yet when using OS X.3. Thank goodness I have a firewire drive to boot from.

5-0 out of 5 stars Once again, very pleased!
I've been using Norton now for almost 15 years and once again, with this upgrade, I'm very pleased. I haven't used any other program for a long time so it is unfair for me to compare it to any other program, but I can say I haven't HAD to use any other program. Thanks for keeping my computer operating well and safe! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Norton SystemWorks 2.0 provides an integrated suite of software applications that cover almost every aspect of keeping your Mac running smoothly, as well fixing problems when they arise. This new version works in Mac OS X, providing protection for users of Apple's latest operating system.

The suite includes Norton Utilities 7.0, one of the best-known Mac disk utility packages, which offers a full range of disk- and file-maintenance functions. Use this program to recover badly damaged disks, fix minor disk and file damage, optimize your drive by defragmenting files and applications, and recover accidentally deleted files. If the worst happens and you find that you can't even start up from your Mac's hard drive, Norton SystemWorks 2.0 also works as a startup disk, giving you a chance to recover files and fix the damaged drive. Also included on the bootable CD is Alsoft Disk Warrior Recovery Edition, another powerful utility that has a great reputation for recovering files from hard drives that are severely damaged.

Norton AntiVirus 8.0 provides simple and comprehensive virus protection. Version 8.0 of the AntiVirus application not only protects you from a huge range of viruses, but will even scan e-mail attachments and file transfers as you download them, to prevent infected files from even reaching your Mac. The LiveUpdate feature keeps all the Norton applications and the essential virus definition files up-to-date by automatically checking for updates when you connect to the Internet, or at prescheduled times.

Dantz Retrospect Express makes backing up files an easy and logical process. Backing up your essential files is always advisable but often difficult to do effectively. Dantz Retrospect Express allows you to automate the process, backing up to removable media such as Zip or Jaz drives, CD-RW, another hard drive, or to an Internet archive with ease. The wide range of configuration options take some time to organize, but once this is done backing up becomes a single-click operation.

Finally, Aladdin Spring Cleaning allows you to keep your valuable disk space free by deleting unwanted and unused files, duplicate files, temporary Internet browser caches, and it even removes unnecessary code from some software applications.

Currently, some features of previous versions of Norton SystemWorks, such as Speed Disk, do not run on Mac OS X. However, by booting your Mac from the Norton SystemWorks 2.0 CD, all the features of Norton SystemWorks 1.0 are available and work just as well on disks with Mac OS X installed.

Users of Mac OS 8 or OS 9 should note that the Norton SystemWorks 2.0 package includes Norton SystemWorks 1.0 for operating systems older than Mac OS X, so if you already own this version and do not use Mac OS X, Norton SystemWorks 2.0 offers no new features for you.

Mac users looking for a total troubleshooting and maintenance package for their computer will find that Norton SystemWorks 2.0 provides a solution that is hard to beat. --Daniel Jardine, Amazon.co.uk ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not compatible with 10.3!!!!!
The box says OS X 10.1.5 OR HIGHER. Wrong..
Does not work for 10.3 and will not until about Feb. according to Symantec tech support

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a reliable utility
While Norton seemed to work fine in OS 9, I had major problems with it messing up my system 10.1 in OS X. Now, I will ONLY use Norton for the disk optimization utility. For general system maintenance, I use Alsoft DiskWarrior, and that has been excellent. My system has NEVER totally crashed since I began using DiskWarrior monthly. Of course, many other things have changed, like OS X being updated to the different 10.1 and 10.2 updates, so it's hard to say EXACTLY what was the culprit... but still, my gut feeling about what was going down was that Norton hosed my Mac, and since using DiskWarrior regularly, my Mac has never been hosed. So at this point, I'm never running Norton Systemworks' Disk Doctor function again.

1-0 out of 5 stars be careful
This software almost wiped out my disk on my Mac OS X completely when I ran Disk Doctor. Fortunately, it was saved by Alsoft's Diskwarrior 3.0.

1-0 out of 5 stars Some words about Symantec rebates
If you are thinking about buying norton software simply because they are free after rebates, then reconsider it. Although it's well known Symantec makes reliable softwares, When we talk about their rebates, they are liars. Yes, liars ┬ĘCthey really deserve this. Based on my personal experience, I even think theirs are worse than the notorious I/O Magic's (aka, Hi-Val, Digital research). I bought several Norton softwares during last December, and submitted the upgrade rebates right away with required items, Guess what, until today I got only one of them, and it has been almost 6 months. I guess they are testing my memory but unfortunately I kept a good record of every rebate I submitted. That's what we should do if we are going to buy Symantec softwares with rebates involved, although the best thing I would recommend is to avoid as long as you can.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money
I bought SystemWorks because I was new to the Mac and thought this package was a good buy because of the software that it included. I was wrong. None of the utilities worked well and it didn't work as advertized. Spring Cleaning (one of the utilities I thought would be useful) worked but it was an older version. To make matters worse, the rebate I was supposed to get came back stating that I didn't meet the deadline even though I sent it 2 months prior to the expiration date. I will never buy another Norton product! ... Read more

Norton SystemWorks 2001 provides an integrated suite of softwareapplications that cover almost every aspect of keeping your Mac runningsmoothly, and fixing problems when they arise. The suite consists of fourcomponents. Utilities 6.0, oneof the best known Mac disk utility packages, offers a full range of disk andfile maintenance functions, allowing you to recover badly damaged disks, fixminor disk and file damage, optimize your drive by defragmenting files andapplications, and recover accidentally deleted files. If the worst happens, andyou find that you can't even start up from your Mac's hard drive, the NortonSystemWorks 2001 CD also works as a start-up disc, giving you a chance torecover files and fix the damaged drive.

Version 7.0 of the AntiVirus application not only protects youfrom Macro viruses, which are the most common form of virus on the Mac, but willeven scan e-mail attachments as you download them, to warn of potentialinfection before the file has a chance to infect your computer. It evenintegrates itself into the main Norton Utilities control screen, so that allyour Norton applications are available from a single launch pad. 5-0 out of 5 stars It's not like we had much choice !
Whether it's a pc or a mac, symantec always has a decent software package.

In the mac world, there isn't many utility packages to choose from.

BEWARE: I believe it was OS 8.6 and/or OS9 that would NOT work with systemworks 1.0. Could cause drive corruption.
(You needed systemworks 2.0)
I bought this package and gave it to the end user.
I warned him about only using it as directed on the package.
Well, naturally he used it with the wrong Mac OS and lost some data.
BUT THAT WAS NOT THE SOFTWARE'S FAULT !

A good, all around utility package.

Thumbs up !

2-0 out of 5 stars Norton who???
Version 1.0 is average at best and this is also only able to run in OS 9 or lower. It does not run natively in OS X, but they have come out with a 2.0 version. The 1.0 version does have good optimization and defragmenting properties, but the 2.0 version has included Alsoft's Disk Warrior. Makes one wonder why Symantec would share the spotlight with another software company. I know why but will remain silent at this time...

5-0 out of 5 stars How did I cope without Systemworks!!!
I bought Norton Systemworks after suspecting I had downloaded a virus on my Mac. I had never used the product (or any other like it) before, so I was pleased that it was user friendly and extremely efficient. I ran both Antivirus and Utilities (both included in the price) to check my system for bugs and general "bad things" and within 2 hours, my Mac was back to its old self.

I am impressed by the wealth and versatility of all the other programms that are included on the CD-ROM (like Aladdin Spring Clean and Dantz Retrospect). Similar to the flagship programmes, they are easy to use, easy to install and set-up, and most importantly they work well.

I would reccommend Norton Systemworks Macintosh for anybody who is having problems with their Mac, or for people who want that extra peice of mind. My only problem is that I wish I had bought it sooner, then my Mac might not have kept crashing orignally.

Fully deserves the 5 star award.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Norton: easy to use and effective.
SystemWorks for Macintosh combines Norton Utilities with Norton Anti-Virus, Aladin Clean Sweep, and Datz Retrospect. The Norton suite installs effortlessly (easier then NAV for PC in my experience), you install Clean Sweep and Retrospect seperately off the same disk. SystemWorks has the familiar Symantec features: control panels (the Norton products can all be accessed through a main panel), and live update. A new to me feature is that when (for example) you run "software update" NAV will detect it and ask you if you want to suspend auto-protect while you're installing software. I happen to like Norton products and have had good luck with them, this product for Mac is no exception. I think Norton SystemWorks is a must have for any Mac home user. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

With new computer viruses appearing on the Internet and being featuredin the news almost every day, it pays to protect your Mac from unwelcomeinfections. Not only does Norton AntiVirus 7.0 protect your computer from macroviruses (the most common form of virus on the Macintosh), but it even monitorsfor virus-like activity indicating that you could have a virus.

If you suspect that a virus has already infected your Mac, you can start up fromthe Norton CD and scan your computer before you even install the software.Installation is simple, and only requires you to select a level of protectionfrom "No Protection," if you prefer to scan for viruses manually, to "FullProtection," which will scan all programs, files, and e-mail attachmentswhenever you download or use them.

If you already use Norton Utilities6.0, then installation of Norton AntiVirus 7.0 will even add an AntiVirusbutton to the Norton Utilities main control screen. Another advantage of NortonAntiVirus 7.0 is the LiveUpdate feature. This allows you to check for updates tothe Norton AntiVirus 7.0 application and virus definitions with a single click,or to specify times to check automatically when you are online.

Once you have scanned all the files and applications on your hard drive thefirst time, checking for viruses on new files that you download is so fast thatyou hardly notice it happening. In all, Norton AntiVirus 7.0 provides a user- friendly and extremely powerful way of keeping your Mac virus-free andprotected. --Daniel Jardine ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars NAV 7.0 Offers Good Protection for Macs
"Norton AntiVirus 7.0" by Symantec offers Mac users good protection from most "known" computer viruses, not just the "macro" viruses which did infect some Macintosh systems before Microsoft made a patch available to MS Word users late last year. (Be sure to use the "Word Count" feature on any "old" MS Word files that were created prior to using NAV 7.0, or after installing the MS Word patch, when using NAV 6.0.)

While NAV 7.0 offers the same LiveUpdate feature as NAV 6.0, I have found that this dial-up feature, (which your modem can access directly or through an ISP with the Apple Remote Access control panel enabled), seems to download new virus definitions somewhat less often than the previous version, or about once a month. However, when I have used my browser to access the relevant area on the Symantec website, I seem to be able to "update" virus definitions, libraries, and vir.scan.dat files more often.

The NAV 7.0 "live updates" take less time than do the NAV 6.0 ones, and the anti-virus detection goes on in the background. The few times I have received "warnings" have been when I was installing software (without disabling this anti-virus application) or otherwise making some modification of a setting on the System folder. NAV 7.0 interfaces very well with Mac OS 9.1 and OS 9.04. (I hope it interfaces with Mac OS X.)

This software is also part of Norton SystemWorks 1.0, so if you purchase that application software you do not need to buy NAV 7.0 separately, (although I did so because I bought SystemWorks 1.0 later). In SystemWorks 1.0, there are separate buttons for NAV 7.0 and LiveUpdate, as well as for Norton DiskDoctor; Speed Disk; FileSaver, UnErase, and Volume Recover, (which I had had to disable with Mac OS 9.0 and OS 9.04, but now these last three features work fine with Mac OS 9.1). If you suspect an infection of your hard disk, you can restart your Mac by using the CD-ROM as your start-up disk, while holding down "c" on your keyboard. Be sure to disable any password protection first.

In this separate version of NAV 7.0, the LiveUpdate is part of the application. (If you click on the "Apple" and read "About Norton AntiVirus," you can see this summary: the creation date of your "Current Norton AntiVirus Defs file"; the creation date of your Current Norton AntiVirus Library file"; the creation date and versions of the current vir.scan.dat files; and the creation date of your Current Norton AntiVirus Macro Scan Lib file. This information helps you to keep up your anti-virus LiveUpdates when you choose not to have regularly scheduled ones set in your Preferences.

The Preferences for NAV 7.0 are excellent. You can customize those areas that you wish to protect, and you can perform a manual scan at any time. You can turn on and off "Auto Protect." The Scan/Repair Preference is excellent--you can choose several levels of auto repair, from minor to major fixes. A complete report is created which you can save and print. You can set both General and Custom Preferences to reflect the level of protection you want. As well, you can perform preventive actions, and decide how you wish to be alerted, and for how long, if a potential virus or virus-like activity is detected on your computer.

I recommend Norton AntiVirus 7.0 highly. You can use any e-mail application, internet browser, and online service with peace of mind, knowing that you have this software protection. In addition, I recommend that you obtain and install Norton Personal Firewall 1.0 (Macintosh) by Symantec to insure even more protection for the files on your Macintosh computer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unnecessary
Sure, you can buy this software, but the question is, "Why would you want to?" There has not yet been a single Mac OS X virus in the wild. If you're a security nut who's concerned about a possible future virus, go buy it, but buyer beware. The only reason you would need antivirus software for your Mac would be if you were running Virtual PC for Windows, but even then, you would want a Windows version, and there is no possibility that viruses could transfer from the Virtual PC to your Mac because the Mac cannot understand the language these viruses are programmed in. 5-0 out of 5 stars What, me worry?
Until fairly recently, my internet access was by way of phone modem, and my e-mail software was, to put it mildly, archaic. Even worse, the dial-up service to which I had access required a toll call. Needless to say, my on-line time was spent, for the most part, in brief spurts: Get on; get what I need (mostly just e-mail); get off.

Given this "get on; get off" modus operandi, I didn't need to worry too much about people hacking into my computer (a Macintosh); the window of opportunity my machine presented to hackers was pretty small, to put it mildly. But I still managed to get Windoze-sourced virus attachments to e-mail I received. On the Mac, these manifested themselves as text files having a vbe extension, meaning that they would run under Visual Basic on Windoze machines. On a Mac, of course, no damage is done. (I was helped more than a little by Microsoft, which continues to cripple Visual Basic for the Mac, limiting it to just a macro programming language as part of the MS Office suite. I couldn't have run these programs if I had wanted to.) But, using a text editor, I at least had the opportunity to scan these Visual Basic programs, to see "what made them tick."

Then (fairly recently, as I wrote), I upgraded to a broadband (cable modem) internet connection. And, since my Mac of choice is a laptop, with ultra-low energy consumption and other similar benefits, I tend to leave it on all (well, at least MOST) of the time. So I thought it prudent to install some sort of protection against hackers (and against the possibility that someone might try to write Mac-specific viruses and worms, despite the fact that 95% of personal computers are NOT Macs). Enter Norton Internet Security for the Mac. This inexpensive "insurance" software contains two parts: a software "Personal Firewall" and Norton AntiVirus ("NAV"), the latest version of Norton's "SAM" (Symantic Antivirus for the Mac). Each module is flexible in the way it can be customized for one's personal use. (For example, NAV preferences can be set so that archived files are not scanned [once they are scanned initiallly for contamination], saving significant scanning time subsequently.)

I've now used Norton Internet Security for a few months, and am pleased to report that it does what it is advertised to do, unobtrusively and in the background. The Personal Firewall log tells me that, on average, there are upward of 50 or 60 daily attempts to "ping" my computer, all denied. (A fair percentage of these has been from my broadband service, but the service's lack of success at entry doesn't seem to negatively affect our relationship.) The NAV log tells me that, since installation, only one active Mac virus has been discovered and, of course, neutralized. And, not that it was ever a problem, but it seems as if the "stable as a rock" OS is even more stable, if that is possible.

Is there a downside? Well, I no longer see any of those Visual Basic attachments, so it's fair to say that my VB-for-the-Mac programming skills have never really left the starting block. But, then, neither have Microsoft's, so I'm not complaining.

An interesting aside: In preparing this review, I did a websearch on the "Alfred E. Newman" brief description at the top, wanting to make sure that it ended up being punctuated correctly. Among the search "hits" I found was one for a Peachpit Press book on internet security for the Macintosh, having precisely this title. My apologies to Peachpit Press. But, well, a good idea is STILL a good idea, irrespective of its originator.

Highly recommended for all Mac users.

Amazon.com Product Description

VirusBarrier identifies and eradicates viruses, and prevents your Macintosh from being infected. Its interface is easy to use and allows you to scan your Macintosh, or any disk or volume, with just one click. After you install VirusBarrier, it works in the background, keeping a close eye on your computer, and verifies your files silently and efficiently. VirusBarrier does not slow down your Macintosh, and it works automatically and independently. Each time a file is written, used, or opened, it checks the file to make sure it is safe. You don't have the nuisance of deactivating VirusBarrier when installing new software, regardless of what the program's installer or manual may indicate. VirusBarrier can also work in manual mode, and you can ask it to scan any disk, volume on a network, or any mounted disk image. It creates a complete log of any viruses or suspicious files it locates. VirusBarrier features Intego's NetUpdate function, which allows you to check for virus and program updates via the Internet, either automatically or manually. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Necessary accessory to your OS X Mac
If you run OS X on your Mac, .Mac is recommended to enhance the functionality of your machine. In order to use Apple's Backup and iSync utilities you need a subscription to .Mac. The .Mac mail service is not as user friendly or powerful as other services such as Yahoo mail, but the Apple Mail program makes it easy to get your .Mac mail. The value of the free games that you get throughout the year is negligible, but if Apple continues to add features and software available through .Mac it will be hard to make a case against subscribing.

4-0 out of 5 stars .Mac is Fantastic!
Apple's suite of online tools is an incredible way to extend your digital hub, and as Apple keeps adding features and services, the value keeps going up!

If you'd like to see examples of what others are doing with their .Mac accounts, check out [the website].

Check it out, then buy a .Mac subscription! You won't be disappointed!

1-0 out of 5 stars It Might Work for Newbies and the Ignorant
If you shop around you'll find that online storage is considerably cheaper than what Apple is selling it for. The utilities they include are not worth much to anyone that knows what they're doing. I'm very unimpressed.

5-0 out of 5 stars All-In-One Online Support
This software package gives you an account with .Mac for one year. What that really means is that you'll have an @apple.com email address, 100MB of storage space on Apple's servers and a few other services. Those services are:

Webmail - Access to your mail from any computer with internet access.

Homepage - An insanely easy to use program for posting your own webpages (only the people you give the address to can access them).

iDisk - Your personal hard disk on the internet. Perfect for sharing files and archiving.

Backup - A very easy to use program for backig up your important files to iDisk, CD & DVD

Anti-Virus - A continually updated (by Apple) program to keep your Mac virus free.

Support - Online support in the form of FAQ's, Discussin Boards, hlepful links, Tips and the AppleCare Knowledge Base.

This is the perfect solution for people (like me) who don't want to be bothered with finding multiple other companies to preform these same tasks. It's also good to know that someone's watching your back. Apple does this by continually updating the support pages and anti-virus software as well as offering many free programs and demos through iDisk. For me though, the best feature (besides email) is homepage. It allows me to eaisly keep family and friends up to date with my life. I post a quartly newsleter as well as photos from special occations. And speaking of email it's terrific. It's not the most feature laden account out there, but it's more than enough for the average user.

For keeping family up to date, an internet based hard drive with 100MB of space AND anti-virus protection as well as backup software you could hardly do better than a .mac account.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gunsmoke Review
While this product is not yet released, it is interesting to note that Apple is offering the same services/software (it's called .mac) for [price] to folks who already have an iTools account. If you do not have an exisitng iTools account, then the discount offered here is excellent (if you need the services). For me, the extra iDisk space makes this a worthwhile expense. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

A killer defense program that scans your hard drive and updates itself continuously with the latest virus definitions to protect against email-borne viruses, Trojan horse programs, or server exploits, Norton AntiVirus 8.0 is Symantec's latest weapon for Mac users.

For those using a version of the Mac OS earlier than OS X, Symantec's CD will install Norton AntiVirus 7.02, which includes virus definition updates through December 2001. (The 7.02 version is also the version that is used to scan your hard drive for viruses when you boot from the CD; it is fully capable of scanning a Mac running OS X.)

Those running OS X receive the big advances in functionality with the full Norton AntiVirus 8.0 install. For the first time, Norton AntiVirus automated scans are compatible with OS X. Norton AntiVirus 8.0 also designates your entire hard drive as a Universal Safe Zone, continually scanning all files saved to your hard disk drive. (Norton AntiVirus for 8.x to 9.xmakes the user create custom safe zones, rather than designating the entire computer as something to be scanned). An easy-to-use scheduling interface allows for complete control over when the software scans for viruses and/or updates the virus definitions or software from the Symantec Internet site.Something to watch for: a few times during the scan of the hard drive you may see an error that claims a file or folder has not been fully scanned. If you have set Norton to scan all compressed items, it's likely that the StuffIt Engine for Mac OS X may erroneously determine system files or printer drivers to be compressed when they are not. Norton's use of the StuffIt Engine may also cause the program to quit unexpectedly at corrupt archives.Overall, Norton AntiVirus 8.0 offers powerful, effective protection over whatever dangers may be lurking on your beloved Mac. --Elizabeth Aoki ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Solid product
Norton Antivirus 8.0 for Mac does what it's supposed to do and does it well. I can't speak about the OS 9 version, but the MacOS X version runs quietly in the background and has never caused any conflicts or problems on my OS X machines. The new version 9.0 also addresses the PC virus issue brought up by another reviewer here. Four stars for a very solid product.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not really a review
No, actually your Mac is NOT infected. The current round of Windows e-mail viruses forges the return address. You aren't spreading viruses, you aren't infected.

1-0 out of 5 stars No Support for PC viruses
Bet you didn't know that a MAC can be infected by a PC virus. Neither did I, nor did I realize upon purchasing this product that PC viruses are not supported at all. Granted a pc virus cannot damage your MAC but you can be infected and spread that virus to other people (PC USERS) in your email lists. Now on a daily basis I receive warnings that I have automatically transmitted viruses to people I have not emailed in months. Support for this problem from Symantec you ask??? Zip nada zilch! Find an alternate product. Very dissapointed and worried.

3-0 out of 5 stars Confusing Rebate
I'm really disappointed with Symantec and Amazon on the 'rebate' for this product. When I searched for the product I found it listed with a 'rebate' icon. Only after I received and was billed for the product did I notice the 'rebate' only applied to previous owners of this software. I've got to believe that the overwhelming majority of folks who purchase this software are first time buyers. I will never buy software from Amazon or Symantec again. ... Read more
