5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!
I am 17 and studying for the ACT. I checked out several titles from the library and this is by far the best! You take diagnostic tests and it customizes your review to help your weak points. I am hoping to raise my score by two points when I take it again in a few months and know it is managable working with Score Builder!

5-0 out of 5 stars a must have

5-0 out of 5 stars It's all about coaching
Successful scoring on the GRE has less to do with what you know, and more to do with your preparation. This software got results for me. My results were similar to other reviews on this site. The diagnostic test, lessons, flash cards, and practice tests simulate the real test VERY well. I highly recommend this software. If you take the time to follow the software's recommendations, you will find the coaching pays dividends.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and Inaccurate
This review applys to the GMAT software included in this software bundle. I was quite frustrated with this software. Yes, there are some good lessons and practice tests here, but I think your money might be better spent buying a book and using the FREE software provided by the GMAT organization. The navigation and sophistication of this tool were disappointing. Examples of this include the following points: 1) Navigation is extremely unintuative. Expect to spend a couple of hours learning how to use the software. This is especially frustrating because what could be an easy tool is made difficult by the unneeded flash of a confusing interface. 2) When you are taking a test there is no explanation of how long the test will take. Some are short, some mid length, others the are the same length as the GMAT test. The full length practice tests are obvious in their length but the others keep you guessing. 3) There is no way to print out lessons worthy of later review. You can review the test problems you miss, but you can't print them out for later review. 4) The software is slow. I understand some lag while the test software attempts to figure out the next question, but waiting between menus seems ludicrous. 5)Worst of all, the software was rating me at a level over 100 points less then what I actually ended up receiving on the GMAT. I took the PowerPrep sample test given out free by the GMAT organization (see their website) and it scored me within 10 points.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty helpful, but a little corny
This program wasn't too bad, but it did seem to take quite a while and I didn't find it very easy to pick out one thing I really wanted to work on. Also the guides are pretty boring and corny. I just wanted to dive into it and not deal with the "foo-foo" stuff. I was mainly looking for geometry help since I never have taken a geometry class in my life (including high school). I do think it improved my overall score in the verbal and analytical sections. As for the math, I would have done fine IF I hadn't gotten a ton of geometry questions. I think 75% of my math section was geometry. Murphy's Law I guess. My original scores when I first took the Kaplan test were V=490 A=650 M=400. My final scores from the actual GRE test were V=560 A=790 M=500 just for reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worked great for the GRE
The primary thing I would change about this program is the stupid cartoony interface and the constant need to hit ESC to forward through the little animations and movies. I also wish it came with a regular test booklet for the times when you want to get away from the computer.

I used this product for the general GRE. I found the testing diagnostics helpful for developing a studying strategy, with which I was able to address my most serious weak points. I studied for about a month leading up to the GRE, and was very pleased with my score. The practice tests I took with this program gave me a really good sense of time and pace, and I was actually surprised when the real GRE ended at how much surplus energy I still had. Incidentally, I scored much better than the program had predicted I would, and likewise I found the practice questions slightly more difficult on the whole than the actual test.

This is a good product for someone like me: a couple/few years out of college and eons since basic requirement classes, or someone who usually tests pretty well but who needs a crash refresher on standardized testing, or someone who is new to the computer-based test thing (I have a hard time thinking while looking at a screen). Caution though: I'd also recommend that this program be augmented with some good old book studying too, or you could be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best way to study for the GMAT
I used this software for the GMAT CAT and I can certainly say that it helped me a great deal. For starters, the test interface is almost exactly the same as the actual GMAT CAT. This is really the only way to study for a test that you must take on a computer. Working from a book, you won't get the same emphasis on the timing. That is where it really helped me. I learned how long it takes to get through the test and where I should spend more time and where I should move a little more quickly. The interface is a little confusing but once you click around a bit you get the hang of it. The tips they give about the way to approach each type of question are quite good. Using these approaches I was more confident about certain answers which allowed me to move quickly through most answers and save enough time to really work on the head scratchers. Be advised that the score you get on the included CDs will be much lower than the score you will get on the actual test. The reason is the practice tests seem to give a lot more hard questions than the actual GMAT. But I think that's a good thing. Everybody knows that the best way to learn is to make mistakes and learn you will. I also downloaded the free PowerPrep software from ETS but since they only give you 2 full length tests I used them for before and after tests. On the first Powerprep test I scored a 700. On the CD tests I generally scored in the mid-600's. After finishing the CD (my only study material), I took the other Powerprep and got a 750. When I took the actual GMAT I scored a 760. ... Amazon.com Review

Are you looking for a way to supplement your child's algebra skills without boring him or her to tears? The text-prep experts at Princeton Review have devised Algebra Edge, an easily loaded two-disc package that teaches and tests all the topics covered in first-year algebra.

The two-disc format neatly divides Algebra Edge into two distinct parts: Algebra Smart (Disc No. 1), and Grade Builder (Disc No. 2). Algebra Smart, the more substantial of the two, consists of lessons, rapid-fire quizzes, and a record-keeping function. The cartoon graphics and wacky voices are designed for kids, and an Olympic theme runs throughout--the quizzes are called the Algebra Games, and the lessons are taught at the Algebra Training Building. The quizzes are very fast-paced, and thus are not recommended until a student has achieved mastery of a topic. One especially helpful feature is the Info Center, the record-keeping function, which allows you to look up any current algebra textbook and review the material that was taught at school the same day.

The Grade Builder CD-ROM consists of review lessons and two games: Death By Algebra and Soak Your Sibling. The graphics for the lessons are set against a very dark background, which some users may find disconcerting. The lessons themselves have more talking and less chalkboard work than those in Algebra Smart. Death By Algebra has an ironic tone that is suitable for most postmodern kids, but it may bother religious conservatives or others who object to jokes such as "Welcome to the game show where, just like in life, you earn points and collect prizes until you die." Soak Your Sibling was nearly incomprehensible on the first try, and kids will find the characters either hilarious or annoying.

Algebra Edge comes with a guarantee that is characteristic of the Princeton Review: if a student finishes the program and doesn't raise his or her grade, Princeton Review will refund the price of the software. To get a refund, the student must return the CD-ROMs (which have an automatic record-keeping function showing which lessons and tests have been taken) along with copies of report cards. A student must use the program within two grading periods to qualify for a refund. --Matt Kohut ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I have learned something...
I have learned to check the SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS very carefully when purchasing any software at all!! This software is for Windows 95/98 and evidently is so old that The Princeton Review website no longer exists. Broderbund Co. (The Learning Company) provides very limited support for this product. The phone numbers for both technical and customer support were no good. I was finally able to get the one CD - Grade Builder - to load and run (Windows XP) and my daughter did stay on and play the games. Yes, her text book is listed - just not the same year publication! It is incomplete. Since that is how I sold her on the CD's (it matches up with your textbook) I was foiled from the start!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great supplement for "home schooling"/tutoring in Algebra
My 8th grader is learning Algebra at home rather than in the traditional class. She had been resisting doing the book lessons, but this software makes more sense to her and is much more interesting. The games are fun and challenging. The fact that it follows the textbook exactly really helps too. We've used it to learn new material and as a fast & fun review of earlier material.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sorry Folks but this didn't work for me!
This program was not all it was hyped up to be. The lessons were too complicated. If I knew what they expected me to know I would not have purchased the software. The animated characters were very racial. In the classroom setting the "dumb" kid was always black. Thats pretty bad. The white kids were always portrayed as smarter and wealthier. Black kids were portrayed as dumb and poor. Dont buy this software if you don't condone racism!

5-0 out of 5 stars Algebra + Fun
This is the only Algebra I program my kids loved! They BEGGED to let them play. Any other program will just explain you something and then give you a quiz, but this one lets you spend some time playing. The games are fun, and "Soak Your Sibling" is the best way to get inside the coordinate plane. If your kid has a little bit of patience, he will understand everything about this linear functions very soon. I wish they would invent similar games for every topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best Algebra I program I have seen!
This program is the best it shows you how to effectivly master any type of algebra I. Algebra I is the bases of all other math so if you use this program you have a chance to learn and master the skill, quick and easy. It can go along with almost any algebra I book out! This one's the best. ... Read more

Need to bone up for your college entrance exams? Look to Kaplan, one ofthe nation's test-prep leaders; its two-CD-ROM package is chock-full ofdiagnostic tests and lessons to help you ace all the necessary exams, plus moregeneral advice on planning for college admission.

Choose from various types of helpful information to begin your preparation:assessment tests, lessons on each type of test question, flash cards and quizgames, and an admissions calendar that helps you plan your entire applicationprocess. It's the tests and lessons, though, that are the heart of the program. The lessons are broken into bitesized topics and include a lot of spokennarration that can't be interrupted midstream by a click; this can be somewhattime-consuming if you want to preview or browse lessons before deciding whetheryou need them. Each lesson offers one or two sample questions to illustrate itspoint.

Though easily installed, the instruction book doesn't tell you much about how tomaneuver through the program, so you must wade through the introductory tour andsome cheesy graphics to figure out the application's functions. A quick warning:set the volume on your control panel before running the program, because itisn't adjustable from the menu bar.

These CD-ROMs offer a thorough review of all the different types of questionsthat are asked on the ACT, SAT, and PSAT. Whether you simply want to familiarizeyourself with the format of the test you'll be taking, or wish to brush up onmath skills or vocabulary, Kaplan's college test-prep programs offer plenty ofinformed practice. --Matt Kohut ... Amazon.com Review

This software decodes the mysteries of the SAT and ACT exams, offering insider tips and a range of learning strategies that will ensure student success. With customized study planning, diagnostic tools, and sample exams for students' use, Inside the SAT & ACT 2003 Deluxe from the Princeton Review guarantees higher scores on either test.

The package serves both as an exam-taking coach and a tutor--two separate but equally necessary tasks. A general strategies section outlines the principles behind the construction of the exam, aspects of the SAT that have nothing to do with core learning. The strategies show students how to eliminate obviously wrong answers on the multiple choice test, explaining the exam designers' philosophy so that those facing the SAT know how best to allocate their time and intellectual resources.

Once the tricks of the trade are well understood, though, the program guides a user through all of the material one might expect to see on the exam, reviewing the math and verbal skills needed to bring home a winning grade. The tutorials are detailed and well organized, offering an excellent supplement to high school instruction.

Inside the SAT & ACT also offers a section on college admissions, allowing users to search over 1,600 colleges based on criteria including the price of tuition, the gender or ethic make-up of an institution's student body, or basic admission requirements. This allows students to target preferred schools and determine what kind of SAT scores will be needed to ensure their admission.

Not surprisingly, Inside the SAT & ACT leans heavily toward delivering content, placing little emphasis on extras like a sleek interface or stylish graphics. This no-nonsense format gets the job done, even if some users may find themselves hating the sounds that accompany the educational drills--a harsh clang denotes a right answer for many exercises--by the end of their 12-week program of study. The occasionally irritating aspects of the package, though, are a small price to pay for the additional exam preparation this software provides. Parents and college-bound students alike are sure to be pleased with the results that this package can deliver. --Alyx Dellamonica ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great software
I think that this is a great software. I found the information very useful for both the SAT and ACT. The SAT tips are very useful. However, I didn't agreed with several tips on the ACT prep software.

I was not comfortable taking the practice tests on the computer. On reading passages, it is timed but you need to scroll down. This takes some times. Also, the practice tests are somewhat too easy.

I would recommend you use the book "Getting into the ACT" and/or "Ten real SATs" in addition to this. In these two books, retired tests are used.

The software itself is great for learning the content and strategies for the tests, but the practice tests are not as good as the books I mentioned.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information...lousy delivery!
The information in this product could really help a bunch of kids...unfortunately my 14 year old tuned out as soon as the presenters started talking like a motivational speaker. You know the type...always smiling, really upbeat, almost mesmerized, "Mary Kay salesperson" form of speaking?

Additionally, the typical, lazy, loser guy who always takes the easy route is a scathing stereotype and in my opinion leaves everything to be desired.

If you want the kids to listen, find the happy medium between the plastic smile and the monotone drone. Run your program on some real kids and see which styles they respond to best. Also take a look at your target audience and what their habits and likes are. You may find stereotyping the loser "skater dude", as your sample idiot may not hold your viewers attention very well. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Program good for test prep
If all you want is to improve your score slightly or test slightly better, this program is OK. It gives excellent tips to taking the test in the computer-based format, and includes shortcuts and hints to improve your score. The math hints are really good.
There are a few computer glitches, however. Sometimes when you are navigating through a tutorial you may answer a practice question correctly, but the system will tell you that you made an error. I only found that it did this a few times.

Overall, it is good for the student that needs to brush up or reaquaint themselves with the topics covered in the test.

1-0 out of 5 stars Inside the GRE, marginal at best
The tutorials in this software were alright. I cannot deny that they did help me a little. The graphics are cheasy and more of what I would expect from a childrens program. The evaluation comments had glitches in them and often gave me advice that did not apply. For instance when I got a 100% in a section it told me not to feel bad just to keep practicing??!! There are only 2 computer adaptive tests, with 4 paper based. The paper based tests had glitches in them that did not score them correctly. Anyway, what use are paper based tests anyway, since you cannot take it on paper now. With only 2 tests that always present the same problems it does not offer much practice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No missing features or cripled functions
STATVIEW is one of the more popular statistical programs used in business and scientific applications, and the only difference between this student version and the professional version is the licensing. The student version has all of the features and capabilities, but you are restricted by legal terms and conditions of the license from using it outside of the academic environment. This is also an ethical issue.

What it contains: a comprehensive suite of descriptive statistical, statistical process control capabilities, regression, analysis of variance, factor analysis and non-parametric test functions are built in. The power and ease of use comes from the innovative user interface, data management and reporting features. In particular, the user interface stands out as my favorite feature because of its simplicity and power. It contains two types of windows, dataset and view, which accounts for its simplicity, and interactive browsers that allow you to access and data and apply analytical functions that account for the power. The dataset window is similar to a spreadsheet, and the plethora of functions allow you to perform any common (and many less common) analyses. You can also analyze more than one dataset in a single analysis, and you can save the work as a template to save time for similar analyses. Results can either be displayed in tabular or graphical format at literally a click of your mouse. The preview feature allows you play 'what if' in the same manner as spreadsheets, by changing data or parameters, seeing the changes. Page layout is powerful and flexible, which is something one expects from a professional tool, but not in a student version.

If you are a student and qualify for the license terms and conditions STATVIEW is a bargain and a time saver. In addition to getting a tool that will make short work of statistical analyses regardless of whether you're majoring in social sciences, business or technology, you'll be learning the same software that you'll probably use after graduation because SAS Institute, the publisher, is one of the most respected names in statistical software. ...
