3-0 out of 5 stars The description is misleading.
Amazon's description of the product is MAC os 9 and below. This product is only for OS 8 and 9. It will not work on 7.5. Wish I had known this before I purchased it.

5-0 out of 5 stars What can't this do?
The new Stuffit Deluxe 6.5(actually 6.5.1) does everything but cook your breakfast! It still has the familiar magic menu and true intergration features, but also has some very useful additions.
With its new drop box features you can now create special boxes to meet your own criteria for archieving, stuffing and sending via email, or uploading to an FTP server, to name a few. Also remember that stuffit expander can open just about any program or attachment, whether it is encoded or compressed(zip) by windows PC users. Its decoding features may be useful at some point due to the increased security measures we all seem to want to employ...

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Mac users on the Internet
If you send or receive attachments via e-mail and/or you download files from the web or newsgroups, you have got to have this package!

Aladdin Systems has been with the Mac OS from the very start--- since 1984 they have been providing file compression software for the Mac platform. Now that Stuffit is also available for all flavors of Windows, it is an even more imperative piece of software to own.

Granted, a good 90% of home PC users are on an Intel machine, not a Mac... but a good 90% of professionally designed web sites are still designed on a Mac and files to and from Advertising Agencies and creatives are constantly flying through cyberspace. Windows users typically .ZIP their files to compress them and those who fancy Linux are now tarring gunzipping their files (filename.tar.gz) for more compact files. Stuffit Deluxe handles these files without blinking.

Aladdin freely gives away it's unzipping and unstuffing utilities, so any file you zip or stuff can easily and freely be uncompressed by an end user... but even as an end-user, you will have the need to compress files.

E-mail is a very slow transfer port and if you've ever had someone send you a 3MB attachment and had to wait 20 minutes for it to download, you know what I mean. Depending on the nature of the file (text document versus movie), zipping and/or stuffing the file greatly reduces the size, hence lowering the download time.

More importantly, even if you only send your files to one friend who is also a Mac user, you have no way of controlling what mail servers your message is going to bounce on before it gets to your friend... and unless you are in the rare minority, it is highly unlikely that your own ISP is Mac based.

We get spoiled using Macs... we don't have to name our files with extensions (such as filename.doc), but the rest of the world is not so forgiving. Certain file naming conventions may alert a mail server that your innocent attachment is really a virus and delete it or otherwise end up encrypting it before it gets to its intended recipient. If you have several attachments or just one, you can stuff them all into one compact attachment with the proper file naming convention built into the process (such as archive.sit).

Stuffit Deluxe comes with many drag-n-drop applications such as "DropStuff" which allows you to drop as many files as you want onto the icon and end up w/ a quickly compressed file ready to send off through cyberspace. DropZip lets you make .zip archives the same way and SecureDelete lets you shred your online documents so that they can not be recovered using 3rd party software... great for protecting your privacy.

The Stuffit Deluxe application itself lets you customize these tasks at every level and also allows you to create self-extracting archives. Let's say you're sending a file to your dear great aunt Tilly who knows how send and receive e-mail and that's about it... do you really want to try to explain to her that she now has to go to a website to download a file that she needs just to open up the file you sent her? The SelfExtracting Archive is just that... you double-click on it and it opens itself. These types of files are typically larger than a stuffed file because they include the "self-unwrapping" application within them, but it's the way to go for sending to clueless relatives or making files available via your website.

The program also lets you password protect your archives so that only the intended recipient will be able to open it.

With each release, Aladdin continues to improve upon this product and add more features, customization and new drag-n-drop droplets. I could not get my work done if I did not have Stuffit Deluxe. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Powerprint 5.0 w. Laserjet 1100se
When I bought my Mac G3 (OS 8.6), I was frustrated by the lack of Mac-dedicated printers in the mid-price range. I eventually settled on the Laserjet 1100se because of my previous good fortune with HP. I had heard about the Powerprint USB to parallel converter that worked with the HP. I have had good luck with Powerprint after printing a couple of thousand pages with it. The speed is adequate for home office use. With a few exceptions, the printer has the same functionality as it would have with a Windows system. Some of the special characters will not print in some font sets--bullets for example. And the "economode" in printing does not work. This is only a minor issue. The kit comes with cable, special mini-centronics adapter, and software. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Whether you need to recover from a hard drive disaster or you just want to make sure your Mac is running as smoothly as the day you bought it, Norton Utilities 7.0 contains all the tools you'll need. What's more, it now runs on Mac OS X as well as Mac OS 8 and OS 9.

Installation of Norton Utilities 7.0 is quick and easy. If you have bought the software to recover a damaged hard drive, the CD-ROM acts as a startup disk, allowing you to recover your drive without damaging any missing data. Even if your drive is apparently working fine, it pays to run Norton Utilities 7.0 from the CD-ROM first to check for problems before installation.

Norton Utilities 7.0 consists of five main components to cover almost any maintenance you will ever need to do on your Mac. Norton Disk Doctor scans your disk to find and repair damaged files and applications, as well as to detect physical damage to areas of the disk itself. With Disk Doctor set to automatically repair any damage it finds, keeping your disks error free is a simple task. The Live Repair feature of Norton Disk Doctor allows many common disk problems to be fixed even if they are on your boot drive, without rebooting from the CD.

Speed Disk optimizes your disk performance by reuniting files that have become fragmented before moving them around on the disk (to optimize performance). You can even optimize your hard drive for specific needs, such as for multimedia use, CD burning, or software development, ensuring that your disk performance is maximized for a given task.

FileSaver and UnErase effectively work together to protect your data by tracking files that you delete, and scanning your disk for damage at startup or shutdown. If you happen to delete a file that you later need to recover, UnErase can often recover the file in its entirety. Finally, Volume Recover works in conjunction with FileSaver to recover disks that are either so badly damaged that they cannot be read, or that have been accidentally initialized.

Currently, some features of previous versions of Norton Utilities, such as Speed Disk, do not run on Mac OS X. However, by booting your Mac from the Norton Utilities 7.0 CD, all the features of Norton Utilities 6.0 are available, and work just as well on disks with Mac OS X installed.

Users of Mac OS 8 or OS 9 should note that Norton Utilities 7.0 includes Norton Utilities 6.0 for operating systems older than Mac OS X, so if you already own this version and do not use Mac OS X, Norton Utilities 7.0 offers no new features for you.

Norton's reputation and long history of producing Mac disk utilities makes Norton Utilities 7.0 an essential addition to any Mac user's troubleshooting library, and its ease of use and range of integrated functions is second to none. --Daniel Jardine, Amazon.co.uk ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work on Panther!
I bought this when I was running OS 9.2 and had good results, but was disappointed to learn that it no longer worked when I upgraded to OSX Panther because it specifically said that it ran on OSX. However, this should be a moot point for anyone currently running Panther since Norton 8.0 is now available.

1-0 out of 5 stars Some words about Symantec rebates
If you are thinking about buying norton software simply because they are free after rebates, then reconsider it. Although it's well known Symantec makes reliable softwares, When we talk about their rebates, they are liars. Yes, liars ┬ĘCthey really deserve this. Based on my personal experience, I even think theirs are worse than the notorious I/O Magic's (aka, Hi-Val, Digital research). I bought several Norton softwares during last December, and submitted the upgrade rebates right away with required items, Guess what, until today I got only one of them, and it has been almost 6 months. I guess they are testing my memory but unfortunately I kept a good record of every rebate I submitted. That's what we should do if we are going to buy Symantec softwares with rebates involved, although the best thing I would recommend is to avoid as long as you can.

4-0 out of 5 stars Norton Utilities
I have been a long-time user of Norton Utilities for Mac but had held off purchasing Norton Utilities 7.0 for OSX because of some negative reviews regarding its compatability with newer versions of OSX. Recently, I bought the program (version 7.02), installed it, updated it on OSX 10.2.6, and used it to repair several disks on my powerbook G4 (800 MHz, Version 2.1, 55.9 Gb drive) and a Western Digital 1394 45 Gb Firewire Hard drive. Several observations:
? Installation. I downloaded the program with Safari 1.0 beta2. Note that the download link did not activate the automatic download and I got hexbin text showing in a browser window. The solution to this is to hold the ctrl button and select the download link to disk. The file downloaded rapidly (286 Kbyte per second through an Airport connected to a cable modem) and I installed it with no difficulty.
? Update. When I rebooted the computer as recommended, a window appeared indicating that Norton Utilities had detected a new OSX operating system and indicated that I update the program. I opened up the program and used the update feature to update all components of the program. This went without a hitch. Interestingly, a window appeared when I rebooted, saying that it detected a new operating system even after I had updated all the components. Using the software update feature of the program showed that there were no new updates. There was a box in the notification window that allowed you to disable that notification.
? Repairing external firewire disk. I was able to use Norton disk doctor to fix the firewire disk with no difficulty. It identified and fixed a number of problems with the disk that Disk Warrior 3.0 did not detect and could not fix. I ran Norton Utilities in the background while I was doing other things with the system. It worked well. It identified a number of file and disk errors that I had not seen before using any program.
? Repairing disk partitions. My internal drive has three partitions. One contains my OSX system, another contained my OS9 system that the OSX uses as its classic system, and the third contains an OSX system that I use for repairing the other partitions. While booted on the first partition, Norton Utilities 7.02 was able to repair the third partition. Expectedly, Norton was unable to dismount the first two partitions because it was using files on those partitions. However, I was able to boot up on the third partition and repair the first two partitions. Again, I was able to repair the other partitions in the background while using the OSX system, including surfing the web and stuffing files on the external drive.
? Speed Disk. I used the Speed Disk feature to defragment and optimize the external hard drive and the other partitions. It was able to do this in the background. Because the disk partition that it was working on is dismounted, there is no danger that you would use any files on that partition while it was working on it. This is very convenient. The old Norton Utilities will not allow you to do anything on your computer while it was repairing or speed disking a partition or an external drive. There is no decrease in the response of the computer to typing, surfing, or other activities while it was doing Speed Disk.

So, while the program is not perfect, it did everything that it was supposed to do. Best of all, I can use the program to repair and defragment external disks and other partitions of my main disk drive in the background while I do other work. It was able to identify OSX file problems on the disks that other programs did not. It is well worth the purchase price.

1-0 out of 5 stars 12" or 17" G4 PowerBook Users BEWARE!
While I'm confident Norton Utilities has extended the lives of my PCs over the years, Symantec's 7.0 version for Macintosh is grossly antiquated. After spending [money] on software I was assured was compatible with my brand new 12" Mac PowerBook, I discovered following installation that I needed to boot from the Norton Utilities CD-ROM to repair "serious" boot drive problems and to access the program's diagnostic features. Only after repeated failures, a live update, and a thorough search of the fine print within Symantec's support database did I learn that Norton Utilities 7.0 is INCOMPATIBLE with both the 12" and 17" models of the G4 PowerBook (both operating Mac OS-X Jaguar). If you own either of these Macintosh models, don't waste your money on Norton Utilities 7.0. Wait for either 8.0, or the next generation of Micromat Drive 10 or Disk Warrior. Unfortunately, current versions of those programs, too, are outdated to function effectively on the March 2003 12" or 17" PowerBooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Improved version of a Mac essential.
I've used virtually every version of Norton Utilities since I started using Macs both at home and at work about a dozen years ago. Recently, I upgraded my home computer to a PowerMac G4 with OS X, so naturally I also upgraded to version 7 of Norton Utilities. So far it works flawlessly. Although Macs have fewer crashes and other problems than PCs, they do have problems occasionally -- and over the years good old reliable Norton Utilities has fixed virtually all of the few problems I've encountered. This latest version is as smooth and reliable as it's predecessors, and it works on both OS X and the "classic" OS 9.2 which are on my PowerMac G4. I can't imagine having a Mac without Norton Utilities, and this latest version is no exception.. ... Read more

Most underated Mac software, and I know why: it's bloody difficult, and I've yet to meet ANyone that actually can use it well. Sure, lots of keyboard shortcuts, but it's a powerful program without any books that explain what it does. Truly, I wouldn't use my Mac without it. But CE Software is missing the boat. ...
