4-0 out of 5 stars This is the only game in town for a general Mac utility
In an earlier review I lamented how Techtool had seemed degraded in its performance since its upgrade to vers. 4.0 and Mac OS X compatibility. I have since learned that Symantec, maker of Norton Utilities, has indeed decided to no longer upgrade their general utility program. (According to news reports, they will continue to upgrade their virus and Internet Security software.)

So what does this mean for Mac users? For one, DiskWarrior is a must have. As for Techtool, there's almost no choice - you have to have a general utility that's more powerful than Apple's rather weak First Aid. Here's hoping that Micromat comes up with a good update to Techtool and gets it back to the days of when it was arguably the best utility for the Mac.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Micromat's best effort
I've been using Macs and utility programs such as Techtool and Norton for about a decade now.

Through the years I would say that Norton Utilities and Techtool have traded back and forth in the top position as the best utility to own. As a fan of Techtool 3 I would say that Micromat had the better product for several years.

I can't say that now.

Running a B&W upgraded to a 500 MHz G4 with ample RAM I've yet to find Techtool 4.0.4 useful - under either Mac OS 10.2 or 10.3. My first major problem Techtool couldn't fix and I quickly purchased a copy of DiskWarrior which, although slow, fixed the problem. But DiskWarrior only fixes the disk directory. You need a broader utility such as Techtool or Norton for general errors.

Now I've got some new problems with my hard drives (I have three in my machine). Techtool says it found the errors and, if I want them fixed, I have to redo the test with the "repair on" button checked. Well, the button _was_ checked. Infuriating.

Overall, I'd say that Techtool 3 was a far better product. The interface seemed far more friendly and you knew that when you told the program to automatically fix errors that it would do so. Unfortunately, Vers. 3 isn't meant for OS X.

I'm giving Vers. 4 three stars, not because of what it has done, but because I assume it will earn its keep eventually - or perhaps they'll release an update to this version which will address these problems. In any case, you never can have too many disk repair utilities. Still, I think it's time to venture back to Norton to see what they've got cooking. It certainly can't be any less functional and helpful than this. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work with damaged drives
This turned out to be more money down the pit. A 250GB WD drive with 3 partitions failed on me, and this product was unable to get more than a few tiny (3MB or less) files from it. Data Rescue X has big problems when it hits a "bad" sector, locking up for a very long time. Out of 140 video files of 50MB up to 1.5GB, only about 8 seconds of the first one was recovered after about 10 hours of processing. In that time the "time left" counter just kept on going up and up until it was into the millions of minutes time left. It just couldn't get past the first file. Very disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS PRODUCT if you have a corrupt drive-
Data Rescue turned out to be the only product that would recover my drive after Panther ruined it (FireWire 800 drive was corrupted)... Norton wouldn't work, Diskwarrior failed... Data Rescue rocks, plain and simple-

5-0 out of 5 stars Panther mauled my drive- Data Rescue saved me--
Everyone knows that Panther will maul your FireWire 800 drive (corrupts it)... Data Rescue was listed on several sites as being the only thing that worked.. I thought, "Ha! I'll try out Diskwarrior..." --But even Diskwarrior failed...

Data Rescue DID turn out to be the only thing that would work to get my files back.. Awesome, awesome product-- I can't believe it--

5-0 out of 5 stars Recovery Champ
I have used this product twice now and both times it has surpassed my expectations.. No other product works, and then, BAM! this one works, sees the drive and mounts it, sees all the files... It's a beautiful thing- thank you Prosoft-

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Product I've ever Used
I tried ALL other titles, trying to get my IBM drive to mount and be able to recover the files from it- Nothing worked (DiskWarrior, Norton, Drive 10, etc)... This was the only thing that worked--- AWESOME--saved my butt- ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic time-saving marvel!
Quickeys 3 by Startly Technologies is a powerful utility to help the computer user create an endless variety of shortcuts that automate everyday, repetitive tasks, resulting in increased productivity.

Quickeys can:

* Launch and manage files, folders, servers and applications (ex. launch your documents folder, switch hard drives, copy or move a file automatically to another location for quick on-the-fly backups)
* Launch web addresses and automatically enter passwords (ex. Check e-mail accounts, review bank statements, pay bills online)
* Write automatic e-mails, documents and any other application requiring text entries(ex. Send an automatic reply to an e-mail, write an invoice,, automatically write your grocery list each month)
* Calculate formulas and mathematical data
* Select menu items including context-sensitive items
* Select items based on single, double, triple and right mouse clicks
* Launch apple script and UNIX commands
* Combine shortcuts you have created into single click power shortcuts.

Quickeys builds these shortcuts into the system interface and allows the user to:
* Create hot keys and key combinations to launch shortcuts
* Select shortcuts from a drop down menu on the menu bar
* Enable shortcuts by speech commands
* Launch shortcuts from the finder or only in specified applications (scope)
* Launch shortcuts based on a specified day or time
* Map any function or application to a key, dater, time or device.

The program does for the Operating System what the actions palette can do to automate steps in Photoshop.

Installing the program was as easy as dragging the icon into the Applications folder and launching the program. Quickeys comes with an indispensable 216 page user guide which requires some careful study before mastering the program, but if you give it some time at the beginning it will be worth your while. And if you are truly stuck, Startly Technologies offers a variety of support options including phone numbers, e-mail addresses and best of all, an online forum called "Quickeys Community" which is compromised of Quickeys users throughout the world. Best of all a link to the Community is built right into the Quickeys interface.

The Quickeys 3 interface operates similarly to that of the finder. Customizable icons are available on a special menu to help the user become comfortable with the variety of tasks.

I began the Quickeys learning process by creating a list of desired shortcuts I wanted to have automated and then approached the software to determine if they could be done. The first item I selected was to create a single shortcut that would launch Entourage, check for new e-mail, apply rules and spam filters, and move unwanted e-mail to the trash. I also wanted QuicKeys to log into my instant messaging accounts, and go online to check my bank balance... all with a simple one-time keyboard combination.

This is where I really became impressed with Quickeys. Not only did Quickeys launch Entourage, but the built-in added options of selecting drop down menu items allowed QuicKeys to retrieve new mail, apply the filters and dump my spam into the trash.

Quickeys also launched Yahoo Instant Messenger, logged into my account and hit the ok button and in a flash I was chatting withmom in Texas.

Finally Quickeys launched my Internet browser, typed in the address for my bank institution, added my user name and password in the proper fields and logged me into my bank account.

I was able to combine all three of these shortcuts together into a final single masterstroke. So now when I wake up in the morning, I hit a single key on my keyboard and have my morning coffee while Quickeys performs my morning computer ritual for me... and mom waits for me to wash the dishes and get back to my computer.

As I began to write this review I had noted that the more shortcuts I created the greater the number of keystrokes - and resulting key combinations - I had to memorize. I was going to suggest that the software developers create a way to have the list of shortcuts available in a drop down menu on the Finder's menu bar. But last night as I was digging deeper into this program, I discovered exactly that feature. You beat me to the punch guys.

Amazon.com Review

Whether you need to recover from a hard-drive disaster or you just wantto make sure your Mac is running as smoothly as the day you bought it, NortonUtilities 6.0 for the Mac contains all the tools you'll need. Installation ofNorton Utilities 6.0 is quick and easy. If you bought the software to recover adamaged hard drive, the CD acts as a start-up disc, allowing you to recover yourdrive without damaging any missing data. Even if your drive is apparentlyworking fine, it pays to run Norton Utilities 6.0 from the CD to first check forproblems before installation.

Norton Utilities 6.0 consists of five main components to cover almost anymaintenance you will ever need to do on your Mac. Norton Disk Doctor scans yourdisk to find and repair damaged files and applications, as well as detectingphysical damage to areas of the disk itself. With Disk Doctor set toautomatically repair any damage it finds, keeping your disks error free is asimple task.

Speed Disk optimizes your disk performance by reuniting files that have becomefragmented and then moving them around on the disk to improve its performance.FileSaver and UnErase effectively work together to protect your files bytracking files that you delete, and scanning your disk for damage at start-up orshutdown. If you happen to delete a file that you later need to recover, UnErasecan often recover the file in its entirety. Finally, Volume Recover works inconjunction with FileSaver to recover disks that are either so badly damagedthat they cannot be read, or that have been accidentally initialized.

Norton's reputation and long history of producing Mac disk utilities makesNorton Utilities 6.0 an essential addition to any Mac user's troubleshootinglibrary, and its ease of use and range of integrated functions is second tonone. --Daniel Jardine ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Caution-Old Version
This is not the latest version and does not work with newer Macs!

4-0 out of 5 stars Booting from CD
The Norton Utilities 6.0 for Macintosh worked fine, but I was disappointed that it had to be run from the CD instead of installed. I hope a fully compatible OS X version will be coming soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mac OS X Life Saver!
For years Norton has made this easy-to-use utility collection for rescuing Macs in distress, and with version 6.0 they won't let you down. After playing with Mac OS X for a few weeks I added some old corrupt files to my computer and couldn't reboot. At first I had my doubts, but Norton came through and saved the day! Owning a copy of this program is the best insurance purchase for your Macintosh, it's like having your own IT Dept. ready to help you around the clock. Previous owners of the program will like the fact that it hasn't changed that much and yet has kept up with the times. Norton Utilities is a must have product for any basic software library for your Macintosh. I only wish that Apple would include a copy with every Mac shipped!

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Skinny"
Great product. Easy and inexpensive upgrade from 4.0. Aided my upgrade from OS 8.6 to OS 9.1 immensely. 5 thumbs up

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for all Mac users
Having used version 4.0 for three years with excellent and invaluable help for optimizing my Mac 7200/120, I purchased v. 5.0 when I upgraded my computer to a current iMac DV+. Unfortunately, many features of the Norton Utilities 5.0 and 6.0 are not yet functional for iMacs, OS 9+ and G3, G4: boot from CD, therefore Optimizing using SpeedDisk is not available. Symantec's technical support site offers an abundance of information about their knowing of these deficiencies and they say they are working on solutions. Symantec says the same problems exist with version 6.0. Had I visited the Symantec site before purchasing, I would have waited for a fully functioning product. (3/8/01)
Since this initial experience, I have not attempted to use this software again. I am unaware of any patch or upgrade offered by Symantec to remedy this problem. The Apple Disk Doctor provided utilities have been sufficient. (9/8/01) ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Norton SystemWorks 2.0 provides an integrated suite of software applications that cover almost every aspect of keeping your Mac running smoothly, as well fixing problems when they arise. This new version works in Mac OS X, providing protection for users of Apple's latest operating system.

The suite includes Norton Utilities 7.0, one of the best-known Mac disk utility packages, which offers a full range of disk- and file-maintenance functions. Use this program to recover badly damaged disks, fix minor disk and file damage, optimize your drive by defragmenting files and applications, and recover accidentally deleted files. If the worst happens and you find that you can't even start up from your Mac's hard drive, Norton SystemWorks 2.0 also works as a startup disk, giving you a chance to recover files and fix the damaged drive. Also included on the bootable CD is Alsoft Disk Warrior Recovery Edition, another powerful utility that has a great reputation for recovering files from hard drives that are severely damaged.

Norton AntiVirus 8.0 provides simple and comprehensive virus protection. Version 8.0 of the AntiVirus application not only protects you from a huge range of viruses, but will even scan e-mail attachments and file transfers as you download them, to prevent infected files from even reaching your Mac. The LiveUpdate feature keeps all the Norton applications and the essential virus definition files up-to-date by automatically checking for updates when you connect to the Internet, or at prescheduled times.

Dantz Retrospect Express makes backing up files an easy and logical process. Backing up your essential files is always advisable but often difficult to do effectively. Dantz Retrospect Express allows you to automate the process, backing up to removable media such as Zip or Jaz drives, CD-RW, another hard drive, or to an Internet archive with ease. The wide range of configuration options take some time to organize, but once this is done backing up becomes a single-click operation.

Finally, Aladdin Spring Cleaning allows you to keep your valuable disk space free by deleting unwanted and unused files, duplicate files, temporary Internet browser caches, and it even removes unnecessary code from some software applications.

Currently, some features of previous versions of Norton SystemWorks, such as Speed Disk, do not run on Mac OS X. However, by booting your Mac from the Norton SystemWorks 2.0 CD, all the features of Norton SystemWorks 1.0 are available and work just as well on disks with Mac OS X installed.

Users of Mac OS 8 or OS 9 should note that the Norton SystemWorks 2.0 package includes Norton SystemWorks 1.0 for operating systems older than Mac OS X, so if you already own this version and do not use Mac OS X, Norton SystemWorks 2.0 offers no new features for you.

Mac users looking for a total troubleshooting and maintenance package for their computer will find that Norton SystemWorks 2.0 provides a solution that is hard to beat. --Daniel Jardine, Amazon.co.uk ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not compatible with 10.3!!!!!
The box says OS X 10.1.5 OR HIGHER. Wrong..
Does not work for 10.3 and will not until about Feb. according to Symantec tech support

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a reliable utility
While Norton seemed to work fine in OS 9, I had major problems with it messing up my system 10.1 in OS X. Now, I will ONLY use Norton for the disk optimization utility. For general system maintenance, I use Alsoft DiskWarrior, and that has been excellent. My system has NEVER totally crashed since I began using DiskWarrior monthly. Of course, many other things have changed, like OS X being updated to the different 10.1 and 10.2 updates, so it's hard to say EXACTLY what was the culprit... but still, my gut feeling about what was going down was that Norton hosed my Mac, and since using DiskWarrior regularly, my Mac has never been hosed. So at this point, I'm never running Norton Systemworks' Disk Doctor function again.

1-0 out of 5 stars be careful
This software almost wiped out my disk on my Mac OS X completely when I ran Disk Doctor. Fortunately, it was saved by Alsoft's Diskwarrior 3.0.

1-0 out of 5 stars Some words about Symantec rebates
If you are thinking about buying norton software simply because they are free after rebates, then reconsider it. Although it's well known Symantec makes reliable softwares, When we talk about their rebates, they are liars. Yes, liars ┬ĘCthey really deserve this. Based on my personal experience, I even think theirs are worse than the notorious I/O Magic's (aka, Hi-Val, Digital research). I bought several Norton softwares during last December, and submitted the upgrade rebates right away with required items, Guess what, until today I got only one of them, and it has been almost 6 months. I guess they are testing my memory but unfortunately I kept a good record of every rebate I submitted. That's what we should do if we are going to buy Symantec softwares with rebates involved, although the best thing I would recommend is to avoid as long as you can.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money
I bought SystemWorks because I was new to the Mac and thought this package was a good buy because of the software that it included. I was wrong. None of the utilities worked well and it didn't work as advertized. Spring Cleaning (one of the utilities I thought would be useful) worked but it was an older version. To make matters worse, the rebate I was supposed to get came back stating that I didn't meet the deadline even though I sent it 2 months prior to the expiration date. I will never buy another Norton product! ... Read more

Personal Observation

I have been using QuicKeys from version 3 and 4 to make my Mac computer work faster for me. I highly recommend QuicKeys to my clients and friends for easy of use and for automating functions.

How did I avoid hand wrestling with my computer mouse? I was able to eliminate unnecessary hand and wrist motions with my computer mouse when I had to complete several time consuming OCR (Optical Character Reader) projects.

For example, I use OmniPage Pro for scanning information for my projects. By using QuicKeys, I was able to assign control function keys for OmniPage Pro's Scan Image, Perform OCR and Save As functions. Using these keyboard commands makes my work project easier plus saves me hours.

Con Reaction

I missed not having a Short Guide for using QuicKeys 5.0. The guide could have included installing the program, trouble shooting and launching programs for the first time QuicKeys user. Examples and Task projects for using QuicKeys could have included in the manuals. Also, a new Mac owner’s manual with visual instructions for using the QuicKeys functions would be appreciated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't get rid of your beloved Mac
All the printers currently on the market have dsl or parallel port connectors. PowerPoint allows you to hook a serial port (the round Mac printer connection) to any printer. I use PowerPoint to connect my old Power Mac to a brand new (HP 900C series) printer. It works beautifully with all my programs (wordprocessing, internet, pdf files, photos, etc) and even accomodates various layout settings. It is extremely easy to install. You just attach the enclosed cable and pick out your printer from the list on the CD. Also I have found this a good company to deal with for support and upgrades.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great with PowerBook
I bought PowerPrint to use with my PB G3 and an old Panasonic dot matrix printer at my office. So far, it has worked very well for me, with the exception of printing from ClarisWorks 4. This seems to be a solid product that does what it says it will do, i.e., allow Mac (serial) users to print to PC (parallel) printers. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

As is often the case with dually developed software, theMacintosh version is better. While Stuffit Deluxe 5.5 does makecross-platform file exchange easy by supporting the most popular Windowscompression formats, Mac users have long been used to Stuffit (.SITformat) compression--which gets about 20 percent smaller. Combined withversion 5.5's new browsing feature and direct menu-bar access, Stuffitusers have an all-around essential utility for any Mac.

The browsing feature allows you to peruse the contents of a compressedarchive without actually expanding it--you can double-click on the onefile that you need and the utility will unstuff only it. If you've gota small hard drive, this is a perfect way to keep everything compressedto save space while accessing files as fast as if you were browsingyour Documents folder normally. Stuffit Deluxe also integrates withyour Web browser and e-mail client to simplify decompressing downloads, and it adds a handy menu to both your desktop and to your pop-up menusfor quick access to compression and decompression functions fromanywhere.

Version 5.5 now features full compatibility with Mac OS 9.0--but youonly need System 7.5.3 or higher to make use of it. This is one of afew key utilities every Mac owner should have. --Erik Macki

Stuffit-Supported Compression Formats: StuffIt (.sit), Zip(.zip), Bzip (.bzip), BinHex (.hqx), MacBinary (.bin), UUencode (.uu,.uue, .U), Gzip (.gz), Tape Archive Format (.tar, .tgz), .arc, CompactPro (.cpt), DiskDoubler (.dd), .lha, MIME (.mim, .mime), AppleLink(.pkg), Unix Compress (.Z), Private File (.pf) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a must-have for Mac users on the Internet
This package contains more than just one piece of software, but actually a suite of products that are intuitive and easy to use. There is also (believe it or not) a printed manual ... and it has been written for mere mortals, not just geeks!

The stuffit expander can be downloaded for free, but what if you need to stuff some files (like a bunch of photos you want to send to Grandma via e-mail) to send over the Internet? This is the software you need. It will mount and create disk images, create archives and you can also include password protection on your archives. Windows users can also "unstuff" files sent to them that are stuffed w/ Stuffit Deluxe as the Windows version of the expander software is also free and can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website. The manufacturer has been faithful in updating this software over the years and Stuffit is here to stay. I've been using this software for nearly 10 years, and it just keeps getting better. It will open a lot of mysteriously archived files including .cap, .bin and .zip without error. Works in tandem with web browsers or as a stand-alone. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Wash and bleach away real good!!!!!!!!!
Brought this program because the reviews said it was a great product; so you think. BEWARE!!!! This software worked well, and too well, a matter a fact. It cleans the folders it's suppose to, and did a great job as far as freeing up hard drive space. That bleaching feature even works great too. It really does get rid of files permanently. The only thing it did that I did like was deleting an important registry file that store all your restore data, thus which, you can't do a system restore if this file is deleted. If you configure the software porperly, you'll never have this porblem, but, as for me, I was lucky to have McAfee Office, which has Uninstaller; enabling me to restore the deleted registry file after a wash.

To sum it all up, I'm sticking with Uninstaller. It may not work as well as Window Washer, but it doesn't delete an important system and registry file needed to keep you computer running smooth. Though Uninstaller lets me clean my ststem manually and requires about an hour to do, it time well spent knowing I won't lose any important files.

5-0 out of 5 stars Window Washer washed off 362MB of junk
I had used another similar product called CyberClean for many months. I recently downloaded Window Washer and ran the thing. After a minute or so, it reported back that 362MB of disk space had been freed. I had no idea that much junk was on there; it really piles up. I have now purchased Window Washer for a permanent place on my computer; goodby CyberClean. By the way, all my other programs still work.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT Program!!
I first got the trial version from my uncle (he brought it over on a floppy) I installed it and washed windows for the very first time! It cleaned up over 200mega-bytes of space. Just yesterday i washed windows and voila i got a ton of space! This is a great program, and Amazon.com has a very cheap price.[...]because not only is Amazon a trust worthy site, but they're reliable to get your product here in good timing! So if you buy this GREAT product, be sure to get it @ AMAZON.COM!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for Mac
When I ordered this product before Thanksgiving, your description indicated Apple compatibility. I am glad to see that you've changed your blurb because it was incorrect. It does NOT work for Apple products. (I called Webroot to verify.) We Mac users need Macwasher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
Windows washer is a great program.I just used it for the first time today and now I have 200 more mega bytes on my hard drive. If your short on memory and you don't know how to clean internet cache, internet history, internet cookies,Windows Temporary files, and other things off your computer I would recomend Window Washer! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Photos never crease or yellow!
I am a graphics "nut", and I'm always looking for new programs to create and/or show off my graphics and photographs in interesting ways. The FlipAlbum Standard 5.0 is one of those great utilities that helps you showcase your cherished photos and graphics in a virtual 3D photo album.
It is SO simple to install and use, it practically runs itself! You can also change background, cover, and page themes, add music, add your own text annotations. It also lets you save and even upload your album to a website for viewing. And the best part is your photos and album pages will never crease, rip or yellow over time;-) ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Crashes While Cleaning
I own the PC version of this software and I have been very satisfied with the quality of the PC version however, this MAC version repeatedly crashes while cleaning. Currently, (6-30-04) Webroot does not have an update that fixes this problem. I am sure that they will make a patch but as for right now I would not buy this product until the bugs are worked out. I would easily rate the PC version a 4 or 5 for quality and I am disappointed that the MAC version does not work. ... Read more
