2-0 out of 5 stars Repetitive matching game, not much learning.
My 5 year old son does enjoy I See Sue, but I hoped for a more educational experience than this. The little informative elements are not interactive and he learned most of the content from a night of reading a good dinosaur book. Not recommended by a mom who prefers her child to be gaining a little more out of time spent on a computer.

5-0 out of 5 stars This game is not for you! . . . . (It is for your kid.)
I am the main designer of this game.

It is painful to see some customers unhappy with their purchase. It clearly is not what they expected.

It was not designed to entertain busy adults. Instead, we played the game with four-year olds in a day care center until they could easily grasp the game, but still had to be pulled away.

Nor was it designed to be "educational" - as if there were a paleontology curriculum in kindergarten. If you want your child to distinguish the Jurassic era from the Mesozoic, buy a different title. Instead this game teaches your child to make wise trade-offs and to think ahead. You choose.

If you can read this review, you will probably find the game slow-paced and repetitive. You might quit before you discover that it is also subtle, deep and exciting.

3-0 out of 5 stars We liked it!
Well, kids are different, aren't they? My 5-year-old liked playing cards against the computer to match the dinosaur parts, he liked seeing his dinosaurs appear on the various gameboards, and he liked the "prizes" which were coloring pages he could print out. It IS repetitive, but often kids this age like repetition. I wouldn't say it's highly educational about dinosaurs, but just as we don't have only one kind of book in our collection, we have a variety of software. I can tell my son enjoyed mastering this game.

1-0 out of 5 stars [....]
No users manual, no help file, no clear explanation or guidance in the program itself. If I can't figure out what the point of this game is, then how can my four-year-old be expected to make any sense of it?

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy Sue the T.Rex
I just finished playing this game with my 4 year old son and I must say that neither of us found this title to be even remotely entertaining. It lacks the depth, superb graphics, and variety of the VERY good dinosaur game - Dinosaur Adventure 3-D. The entire game is this simple: Match 3 dinosaur tiles (head, mid-section, and tail) before your opponent does... and do it again, and again, and again... I didn't play it with my son for more than 20 minutes before I gave up from sheer boredom. I would suggest spending your money on Dinosaur Adventure 3-D instead. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars fun facts, nice graphics, though no ideas
Perhaps my sights are too high for cd-roms, but I would hope that they might teach kids to think more than merely entertain them with well-presented facts. Indeed, my daughter is becoming quite a reader of kids' science literature, which I think is definitely far better than this kind of software. While there are puzzles, this is largely a passive experience of clicking - with little cost if you guess wrong - and mini-movies and things to print. It passes the time, but teaches very little. Can't the producers introduce some notions, such as evolution, ecology, etc?

Recommended as enterainment that can be construed as learning - if you stretch it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great program compatability issues
My daughter loves science and LOVED this program. However, like another reviewer mentioned, it is NOT compatible with XP and after using the software for several weeks it refused to continue to work. If you don't have XP and your child likes science I would highly recommend this product.

3-0 out of 5 stars XP Compatible
I go with three stars only because my child has not really gotten into this software, only perhaps for one and a half hours. So...why a review? Only in fairness. One of your reviews stated this software is not XP compatible but it is on our machine.

1-0 out of 5 stars BEWARE--Not Windows XP compatible
The box says it's compatible with Windows XP, but it's NOT!
DON'T buy this if you have Windows ...

4-0 out of 5 stars If All Science Could Be This Fun
What can be better than teaching a child by example rather than explanation? I Love Science takes this "hands-on" concept to the next level.
Children are able to conduct experiments of every conceivable kind through the process of deductive reasoning, trial and error and hypotheses. Each scientific concept is introduced using several different approaches in a fun atmosphere with likeable characters.
Three locales teach the concepts of environmental, chemical, and physical sciences. At the tree house the human body, environment, animals and plants are explored. In the kitchen we are introduced to chemical experiments through sorting and testing combinations; and in the garage we are invited to participate in the physical sciences through forces, electricity, sound and heat.
I Love Science takes a technical subject and transforms it into an enjoyable game of the understanding of everyday life. For those of you who hated science in school, your interest may be rekindled when you discover that it should have always been this clearly introduced and practiced. ... Read more

At $9.99, the Earth Scount software was a great value and has helped my 5 year old homeschooler begin to familiarize herself with the names and locations of continents, countries, oceans etc. in a fun and self directed way. Amazon.com Review

If you know any kids who are intrigued by wild African animals, interactive scholarship, and the flashing announcement of incoming "e-mail," you owe it to them to snare a copy of this award-winning software from WNET's Nature TV series. From the very first moment, when an impressively stamped passport allows users entry to the game, Nature Virtual Serengeti successfully captures kids' imaginations by asking them to play an integral part in an exotic research trip. That creative framework, along with the fascinating videos of animal activities in the Serengeti--including a wildebeest giving birth as it runs and a crocodile carrying its baby inside its gargantuan jaw--couldn't provide more exciting or enduring educational moments.

The "guide" for the trip is the absent Dr. Elgin Carp, an amusing, hyperkinetic zoologist, who is being whisked off to conduct far-flung field studies and thus cannot complete the work he has begun in Tanzania. Contacting you with frequent mock "e-mails," Carp explains that he's leaving you with his half-started field journal and a full map of the Serengeti region, plus he's giving you use of his hardy jeep and his small private plane. Your job is to find 150 missing "animals" (i.e., videos) by scrolling for these creatures amidst 58 gorgeous 360-degree panoramas of the Serengeti plains. Once an animal is "found" (by running your mouse cursor carefully over all areas of the panorama), you must properly classify it in the journal, based on the area of investigation the film footage illustrates. Shots of a zebra grazing, for instance, will likely belong in the journal section that discusses different animal fur patterns and their significance to the animals' survival.

This CD-ROM is advertised for children 9 and older, but we found that its most sincere devotees fell into the 7- to 8-year-old range. They were still young enough to be seriously excited about receiving frequent "e-mails" from goofy Dr. Carp and having a chance to go onto the Web a bit to read the Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia Online articles and to follow a few selected animal Web links. As well, the younger set will likely display a little more astonishment at the footage captured in this program. --Jean Lenihan ... Read more

Product Description

Starting with a great song with a calypso beat, Ocean Explorers promises and delivers a lot of fun. In the main menu, Zippy the Bathysphere tells you about each of the five habitats on the screen (when your cursor turns into a question mark near a habitat) and inside his master control room when you click directly on him. Each of the other five pictures takes you to a specific habitat with informational videos and games. In each of the habitats are pictures of creatures that live in that environment. Click on the creature for a short informational video packed with information about the entity you selected. Although picture quality on some of the movies could be a little better, they were very interesting, and not only for kids. Did you know that manta rays are basically flattened sharks... or that sharks have three eyelids? You learn interesting bits of trivia that is easily remembered and great to amaze your friends. Each area has a host, such as Spike the Sea Urchin or Clyde the Giant Clam. Clicking on the host takes you to their games. Play Spikes matching games or Gabby Garibaldi's Guess Who and Rub-a-dub. For just plain fun, create some crazy-looking fish in Clyde's Fish Gumbo. In Spout's ABC game, click on a letter to place the creature beginning with that letter on the screen. Finally, search through four screens of a coral reef to "Find the Fish" that Sammy is looking for. The games range from very easy to slightly challenging. When you do something right, the game is very generous with praise... perfect for building self-esteem. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

There are many enthusiastic amateur astronomers and in the past 50 years they have made a number of important discoveries. Starry Night Backyard 4.x is a CD-ROM package that is targeted at this audience and adds greatly to the tools at the amateur astronomer's disposal.

The package is extraordinarily eclectic--one moment you're viewing the sky as it now is in Abidjan or Rio de Janeiro, and the next you're visiting Mars or any location within 20,000 light-years (surely enough for most of us). This range is supplemented by some excellent visual effects: the moving graphics, for example, as you travel through the solar system and past the edges of planets and moons are quite otherworldly.

The software is designed so that you can select your home geographical coordinates and then explore the constellations as you perceive them from home. However, what really distinguishes this CD-ROM is the scope it offers in terms of interstellar travel. With the range of viewing locations on offer, you can experience the fearful darkness of Pluto and the searing heat of a sunny day on Mercury. You can also turn to interesting events in the past, including many solar and lunar eclipses, and experience the passage of comets and asteroids.

This broad, comprehensive scope is what will really attract people to this package. Among the consolations for the freezing winter temperatures suffered by those who live in northern Europe and the northern part of North America are the crisp wintry nights, when the stars are as clearly visible as at any other time in the year; now, with the help of Starry Night Backyard 4.x, we can all go out and discover the mysteries of the heavens for ourselves. --Toby Green ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful!
I use this program along with my etx70at to plan my observations and use it to find the perfect aligning star. I also just like to go back in time or forward to watch an eclipse of the sun. This program is very useful and you'll be out for many hours ovserving celestial bodies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Gift for the amateur astronomer
I purchased this gift for my girlfriend because she loves astronomy, but her collge does not offer any classes in this subject. The program offers views of anything in the night sky that could be viewed with any powerful telescope. This is an ideal piece of software for any beginning astronomer. It's just a little more than the base version, but offers so much more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Software for Anyone Who Is Fascinated by the Stars
I just turned into an astronomy buff since the planets in the inner solar system aligned last year in 2002. Now, I find myself looking at the sky every day and night and I am completely fascinated by the stars that not only gleem, but change colors from white to orange to red as they gleem.

Through Starry Night Backyard, I found out the name of those star and why they dance in the sky changing colors. Also, last year, when Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and Venus all lined up with each other, I wondered what it looked like up there and not just from the earth which only hindered the view. Starry Night has a Blast Off feature that lets you center the planet or star and let's you blast off the surface of the Earth and go right to that star or planet. The Blast Off feature alone makes Starry Night a great investment.

And if you are fascinated by solar and lunar eclipses like I am, Starry Night makes watching an eclipse easy and DIFFERENT. Did you ever wonder what a solar eclipse looks like from the surface of the moon instead of just looking at a big black disk covering the outer halo of the sun from the Earth? Starry night has a database of dates from all the eclipses. It lets you go back in time to watch that eclipse and then, you can go to the surface of the moon and watch its own shadow engulf the Earth while the eclipse is occurring. Since mosst of us will probably never travel to the moon in our lifetime, Starry night will allow you simulate being on the Moon. You can also open two windows and watch the eclipse from both the moon and the earth simulataneously. Then, you can land on the sun and watch the solar eclipes from the sun. Try doing that in real life...

Starry Night Backyard and Pro just makes all these things possible. Just the fact that you can travel 5000 light years in 30 seconds and look at all the stars from that point in space (and time) makes Starry Night one of the few software programs that any astronomy buff can really call an investment.

So, if you purchase this program and use it to identify just one star, you will have already gotten your money's worth.

Have fun and I hope you enjoy this review.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Universe on your monitor - 5 stars are not enough
In my 18 years of nearly daily Mac use, decades as an amateur astronomer, and celestial navigator since sextants were used to get little triangles on a chart with star tables and a pencil, this is the most astonishing program I have ever used.
If you use a Mac with OS X, have ever looked up at the night sky and wondered what you see, or have any interest in astronomy, or have children or grandchildren about, buy this software. If you also own binoculars or a telescope of any size and use them to look at the stars, and own a real Sky Atlas, buy this software anyhow. You will find yourself using it in place of your atlas or planisphere or the charts in Astronomy or Sky and Telescope magazines, to print stunningly lovely and detailed charts of the heavens as they appear at your location at any time of the night or portion of the sky, to plan your nights pleasure looking up, as a superb supplement to your atlas.
If you don't own binoculars or a telescope, you will still get immense enjoyment from this program helping you to learn the constellations with the naked eye.
The versatility of the program is immense and it is very simple to use. If you have grown up with the Mac and have lots of unread manuals gathering dust as I have, you will love this program. The manuals which accompany the package merely expand the level of detail to which you can go in its use, and start you on the road to be an expert amateur astronomer.
Starry Night is also highly educational for beginners or children of any age. The videos included reflect current professional astronomy knowledge and are very enjoyable. The vendors site also provides support for lessons in its use and in astronomy.
Among the thousands of dollars I have spent on software in 18 years, this was by far the best buy of all. ... Read more

If looking up at the sky on a clear night has always held more than a bit of curious fascination for you, Starry Night Pro is the perfect tool for you to explore your intergalactic interests. The application is packed full of information to delight the backyard stargazer, while being powerful enough for the serious student.

View the stars from your exact location on Earth (or any other location on the planet), or travel throughout the solar system to see views not possible until now. If that's still too close to home, Starry Night can produce views from anywhere within 20,000 light-years of the solar system. With a database of over 19 million celestial objects, there is almost no limit to where you can travel. View satellites, asteroids, and comets, or continuously track their paths in orbit.

Basic information about each star, planet, or galaxy is available within the program. If you desire more in-depth reading, Starry Night Pro will link you directly to the Internet for more detailed information.

The software can also be customized to the individual tastes of each user, with the ability to add labels, guides, and constellations, as well as create your own personal settings. Keep it current by adding your own database of newly discovered celestial objects. You can even throw in customized images and Internet links.

Curious about the way the universe looked in the past or how it will look in the future? This software allows you to travel through 200,000 years of time in a matter of minutes. You can also create QuickTime movies of your adventures and send them to friends.

With almost too many features to mention, Starry Night Pro is an amazing tool for anyone with a fascination for space. It's as close as you will probably ever get to owning your own planetarium. --Joshua Craig ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly powerful astronomy tool
I just started working with Starry Night Pro and am simply amazed with how comprehensive it is and how simple it is to use. After reading just four or five pages of instructions, I am able to research the universe from my desktop (too much light pollution in my neighborhood to do it from my backyard).

Here are just some of the things that you can do within minutes of installing the software...
1) View and track progression of stars, quasars, man-made satellites, planets and constellations from your (or any) location and time zone
2) View the starry night as if you were in another location (or time) in the universe (e.g. the Moon, Pluto, Sirius, or last week or a thousand years from now)
3) Export Starry Night images to other applications
4) Make quicktime movies of celestial events described by the Starry Night software

Net/net:
* Easy to use but POWERFUL astronomy tool

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommend 'Starry Night Pro' over all other versions
This program is not just for beginner to serious amateur astronomer. On the contrary, anyone with a computer has desktop access to and detailed information on all that goes on in the sky. The Pro edition is a bargain and has all the features you will want. Don't buy the lesser editions. A new edition coming later this year is relatively pricey. If you want a realistic sky planetarium or information about anything up there at anytime past present or future, get this program. It is absolutely beautiful to view especially if you take the time to set it up with the sky aesthetic that suites you.

Starry Night Pro is an eccelent program for anyone who wants to know what stars are out, but you can also play with it, like making a new comet or even planet, and making M13 look like a black hole!

5-0 out of 5 stars Novice? YOU'LL LOVE IT!!!

Or, if you're into it you can switch to scope (inverted) view of ALL, just planets, satalites, galaxies, whatever, with or w/o local ground light, and ZOOM to view whatever from any object! I've just started, but it's the finest program I've got. Tossed Red Shift (et al), no contest! Sometimes I leave it on just to notice the sky darkening! Zoom, identify, shows moon in phases (and everything), it's all you could ask for! ... Read more
