5-0 out of 5 stars Have been using for 2 months now.
I have been using Filemaker 7 for Mac for 2 motnhs now. I am so happy with all the improvements they have made. Hands down this is the best database program (Mac or PC) ever made. A must buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great software!
This Filemaker is the best version yet! Highly recommended!

2-0 out of 5 stars Filemaker Pro 7
I ran out an got this immediately when it was announced because I like to get the latest software and have been using Filemaker for over 10 years.
Now I want to go back to 6.
For some reason 7 is SLOWER than 6. All functions hang before executing from performing a find to changing between layout views there is a noticeable lag before the desired screen comes up and when you asked for it. Additionally once you perform the function you find yourself waiting. Especially performing finds I am noticing that it takes a while for the program to give me results. Since I use this function constantly that's a major pain in the ass. In 6 the delay between when I hit the find button and the results coming up was non existant. Performing finds in 6 on the same machine was lightning fast. In 7 it is not.
Since I use this function more than any other and because there is also an increase in wait times on many other functions in the program , like creating a new record, sorting and everything else, I would not reccomend this upgrade.

Amazon.com Review

FileMaker Pro 6.0 makes data management for individuals and small groups engaging and almost fun. Installation and setup are both surprisingly quick and easy, and the templates and wizards will have most users frolicking with their new or imported databases in just a couple of hours. The interface and design tools are comfortable for Windows users of all levels of experience. The software is not designed for the lowest common denominator, though--advanced users will find FileMaker Pro's scripting language for queries and other tasks handy, if not all-powerful.

Data entry couldn't be easier. For some formats, it's as simple as dragging and dropping folder contents, so multimedia management, for example, becomes almost trivial. FileMaker Pro's data manipulation tools are more powerful than before, which means administrators would do well to limit users or train them carefully. Searches, the meat of the package, are simple enough for beginners but offer enough complexity to keep power users happy. One new timesaving search feature is the extend/constrain function: if a search returns too few or too many results, it takes just one step to expand or contract search parameters.

Web-style integration in FileMaker Pro 6.0 has taken a huge step forward from version 5.5; the look and feel of the desktop is almost seamlessly translated to intranet application. However, those with more than 10 potential FileMaker users should pick up the unlimited-use version of the software. FileMaker can import and export XML, so data can be manipulated and then easily shared with non-users via a Web browser.

While there might be more powerful data management packages available, for a wide range of uses and users, FileMaker Pro 6.0 is tough to beat. --Rob Lightner

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product but why not the same discount as for the PC
Amazon continues to charge more for the Mac version of products which also appear for the PC. I wish they would tell us why this is so.

5-0 out of 5 stars My most important software package
Our company has been using FileMaker since 1989. As it is the only database Ive ever used (other than a brief experiment with 4D) I really can't compare it with anything else. I'm here to tell you it will do the job you want to do.

I won't use technospeak in my review, as I am here for the novice users (and anyone who is reading a review to determine if this software is for them is probably a novice). FileMaker will keep track of all your company info. Even if you are a one-person company it will work for you. When you have 100 employees on the payroll, it will still work for you. If you have never designed a database before, you can do it.

Now, you WILL have to devote some time to learn the software, but if you are to be administrating a database, youre going to have to be doing some maintenance anyway. With FileMaker, you can begin using your database the first day, then add more features later on as you add more records and more users. I recommend learning FileMaker as opposed to hiring your project out to a developer for the simple fact that YOU know your business best and you will constantly be making changes as your business changes. My philosophy is that it is better for YOU to learn FileMaker than for a developer to learn your business.

Go ahead and get it. You will be able to make beautiful, efficient databases if you take the time to learn it. This product will do the job. I guarantee it. Contact me and I will help you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding product that empowers users and designers alike!
Greetings Amazon reviewers..

Now that you've read the Microsoft commercial below from:

"Reviewer: Andre Da Costa (see more about me) from Jamaica W.I."

Here's the truth, this product has the capabilities for implementing a client / server database network easier than anything currently on the market! And the client / server capabilities are built in! And it doesn't matter if it's based on the PC OR the MAC. Further, once designed and implemented, will work seamlessly with both platforms on the network. Additionally, after extensive research for an insurance client that I just completed designing a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) for, it was BY FAR the least expensive alternative, ESPECIALLY relative to Microsoft. In addition, it has the lowest overhead (computing hardware/software requirements) relative to anything of its capabilities on the market. You can reference these system requirements (along with features) at their web site that really gives a good deal of information. Note these minimum requirements that most systems can easily handle these days:
(compare these minimum requirements to the latest version of Microsoft's Access or any other database for that matter)

PC
· Intel Compatible 90 MHz Pentium or higher
· 32 MB of RAM (or more)
· Windows 98, Me, NT4 (SP6), 2000, XP

Mac
· Power Mac or higher
· 32 MB of RAM
· OS 8.6 - 9.22

Mac OS X
· Apple G3 or higher
· 128 MB of RAM
· OS X 10.1

The client had older PCs using Windows 98SE. Obviously, I used the PC version of the software which is very similar to the Mac version. If I had decided to implement a Microsoft "solution" it would have involved upgrading not only the hardware but the operating systems too. Then, the cost of the Access copy doesn't come cheap if you haven't compared lately. FoxPro didn't fair any better, SQL Server worse. Especially in a clent <==> server design paradigm!

Bottom line, a fully customized relational database designed, developed and deployed in record time with minimal cost to the owner (no new hardware or operating systems) and working from initial installation to this day with minimal database administration. FULLY compatible with either PC or MACs on the network and future operating system upgrades on either platform. Personally, I'm pleased and I know a business that is extremely happy. Win-win situation..

One thing I found rather nice is you can download a 30-day free trial of the basic Filemaker Pro software at their web site to see if it meets your needs - certainly a nice gesture. (filemaker.com)

4-0 out of 5 stars And it works with fine with Excel
An update to my earlier review: Filemaker works great with Excel (contrary to what an earlier reviewer guessed, apparently without testing). Last week I built a small Filemaker database to track contributors and potential contributors to a charitable group with which I work. Yesterday, I received an Excel spreadsheet from another member of the group, and it contained nearly 1,000 names, addresses, and phone numbers. Importing it was a snap: I simply used the "Import" function, choosing Excel as the file-type I wanted to import. Filemaker gave me a nice graphical interface to match Excel columns to fields in my database; it also gave me the chance to add a new field if necessary. Then a button click and the data imported cleanly and quickly, without any problems.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mac Users Yes, PC Users NO!!!!
First of all for Mac, users this is your only option for a good reliable, well known database, so I recommend it to them most of all. For PC users however, stay very far away, Microsoft Access has all the tools you need already. Based upon user experience, I think Microsoft Access is much easier, (read carefully now, before you judge my review). People say that FileMaker is the easiest database ever created, but they are dead wrong, they have never tried Access. Entering information into the database in FileMaker is like thorns in your finger, it is so difficult. I tried to enter the date for my music collection and it kept on giving me an error message that it should be done a particular way, I followed its instructions and still ended up with the same error. Creating reports is also painful, unlike Microsoft Access which uses a simple tabed interface you can immediately switch from tables to creating quries and beautiful reports. In FileMaker, the database uses some sort of Visual Basic interface to create reports, Access uses simple wizards to get you where you are going. Access is also more powerful in terms of integration with SQL, ODBC, other database server products so there is no conflict with your data. FileMaker is simple and too weak for users to spend upto $..., buy Access and you will never regret it. And with the integration between other MS Office products, you will be amazed. One of the features I love the most is the ability to create mail merge documents using database information from Access into Microsoft Word. Your able to easily convert a database from Access to Excel, vice versa easily. All of this would be a head ache in FileMaker. If you are on the Windows platform, certainly Access is the best way to go! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CODE WARRIOR PROFESSIONAL IS WONDERFUL!!
CodeWarrior for Mac OS, Professional Edition, Release 5 introduces RAD tools for Java including wizards (helpers) for Java applet, application and bean development. The Java RAD is great because it has a graphical layout editor that builds Java program's with a user interface (GUI) using fast, click-and-drop technology.
Release 5 of the Professional editions can be used for Mac OS and CodeWarrior for Windows bundle KL Group's JClass Java Lite components with CodeWarrior. KL Group's JavaBeans added to CodeWarrior gives me versatile tools that enhance the look and functionality of my interfaces, and provides the only truly integrated development tool suite for multiple language and multiple platform development.
WONDERFUL+++++++++++++++

5-0 out of 5 stars do not pass go, do not collect other tools
If you're developing for Macintosh, don't be distracted by comparisons to other Windows compilers. This is the one to get. Command line? Forget it. Slow? It blazes. Cherished by 90+% of professional shrink-wrap developers. Accept no substitutes.

4-0 out of 5 stars The only good one
It's solid, fully supported, and updated. At least it's more finder friendly than MPW. Slow but worthwhile. Worth getting.

1-0 out of 5 stars Well, at least the name sounds good
My experience with codewarrior hasn't been good at all, to say the least. Their so-called standard C++ Refrence Lib has bugs that cripple any programs I've tried to write using it, and their plentiful on-CD documentation could offer no assistance or guidance. If you're in the market for a compiler, my personal advice is to go with Borland, if you don't want your life and production pipeline needlessly complicated. However, I cannot speak for any other languages it supports. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars OS X and Filemaker Great Combination
I had to upgrade to get OS X functionality. Filemaker is the best database program around-- for all-around functionality, ease of use, and rapid deployment. I use Filemaker to run my business from accounting, to tracking, to letterhead and faxes. Now that Filemaker is XML, it's a real contender to any commercial database program. You can also access just about any database with Filemaker, and has great import/export functionality. From the amount of time Filemaker can save the average business, I think it's a must in any efficient or multi-tasking office.

3-0 out of 5 stars IT'S GOOD, BUT IT'S NOT A MUST-HAVE UPGRADE
The strength of "FileMaker Pro 6 Upgrade" is marginally above that of its immediate predecessor, (the 5.5 version). That said, anybody who still feels at home with the 5.5 version should not see this new one as a must-have upgrade. The improvements do not worth the asking price.
Yes, there is an improved interface, as well as loading speed; but what else? Technical support is minimal; and it is very likely that you will need it. This is because, you may discover one or two hitches as soon as you start running the software.

5-0 out of 5 stars Faster FileMaker Pro
Version 6.0 speeds up FileMaker Pro -- it loads much, much faster -- almost instantly -- curing the major shortcoming of previous versions.

The only quirk I've found is that in both Windows XP Pro and Windows 98 SE, FM Pro 6 will not show a list of recently opened files from the Files drop down menu. It simply refuses when I click the check box in "Preferences" to show recently opened files. It responds by saying that it cannot perform this function in this installation of FileMaker Pro. Technical support was of no help whatsoever! All they could suggest was to do a reinstallation in Safe Mode -- which, of course, made no difference. Tech support seemed to be reading from a script or manual. The guy had no working knowledge of the software at all. And tech support policies are very limited -- free support for installation and then one free tech support call (not on a toll-free number). Pardon the generalization, but the software industry really, really stinks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best WYSIWYG web editors.
Recently, I had a choice between using Dreamweaver 3 and Adobe GoLive 5. When upgrade time came along, Dreamweaver was the one I selected to advance with. UltraDev also gives you the ability to connect your site to a database, invaluable in today's web world.

Dreamweaver is extremely easy to use with very little training. However, the training can be invaluable to helping you utilize every feature that has been packed into this program. Version 4 allows you to build Flash buttons within Dreamweaver. With the addition of Fireworks, you have a complete web studio. Now, all you need is a server. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Dreamweaver UltraDev is an enhanced version of Macromedia'sleading Web-authoring tool. The standout additional feature is dynamiccontent, which is when pages have live links to databases or othertypes of server-side scripting. Most products of this type requireextensive manual coding, but UltraDev has an extensive library ofbuilt-in scripts, called Server Behaviors, that allow even moderatelysophisticated sites to be built with little or no code. Version 4 lookssimilar to its predecessor, but includes important changes that make itmore complete and easier to use.

One of the best new features is the split code and design view, whichlets you edit either the code or the visual design and see changesinstantly echoed between them. There is also built-in security, so youcan create login procedures and password-protected sites. Finally, theLive Objects wizards automatically create page elements to handlecommon tasks, such as a master/detail page set, or forms to insert andupdate records.

UltraDev supports three kinds of server-side scripting: Active ServerPages, JavaServer Pages, and Cold Fusion. Unfortunately, it does notsupport PHP, which is popular on Linux and Unix servers, althoughbecause UltraDev is extensible, there may be some third-party add-ins.The features for the three models are similar but not identical, although in every case there is excellent database support. Its greatstrength is that you can focus on designing your pages and let UltraDevhandle the data access code. You can even display live data at designtime, making it easier to get exactly the right appearance.

Everything in Dreamweaver is also in UltraDev, so this is the idealpackage for Web authors who need to add dynamic content with a minimumof fuss.

About Fireworks 4:

Fireworks is a dedicated Web graphics application. You can create bothvector and bit-map images, optimize them for Web pages, and addnumerous special effects for export direct to HTML.

The starting point is a familiar range of drawing and painting tools, such as shapes, lines, brushes, pens, and selection tools. In thedefault vector mode they create editable, scalable objects, and inbit-map mode they paint pixels. Fireworks supports layers andmasks--virtual overlaid surfaces that you can edit independently, enablingdesigners to achieve a wide range of effects. For example, you can varyopacity and blending to fine-tune the final appearance. Other Fireworkspanels include color, stroke, fill, and effects. There is also alibrary panel where you can store graphic elements for reuse.

A key feature for Web designers is optimization. Fireworks offersmaximum control over the critical tradeoff between quality and size. Atwo-up and four-up view lets you compare the quality of original andoptimized versions, using techniques such as reducing color depth andremoving unused colors. The software offers strong support for GIF,JPEG, and PNG image formats. Fireworks also lets you create animationthat is exported as an animated GIF. It will also generate JavaScriptto produce image rollovers and, in this new version, pop-up menus. There is great support for hotspots and slices, techniques for mappingor dividing an image to support HTML features. Integration withMacromedia's Dreamweaver 4 is better than ever in version 4 ofFireworks. Dreamweaver UltraDev 4/Fireworks Studio combines the twoproducts at a lower price. You can export to Dreamweaver--or launchFireworks directly from Dreamweaver--edit an image, and save it backwith all Fireworks-specific information preserved. --TimAnderson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply THE best web dev combination
DreamWeaver Rocks. Fireworks Rocks. Together they make for a spectacular web design/development combination.

Dreamweaver is packed with features for the beginner through advanced web developer; it's easy and intuitive to use. It may take you a while to learn all the capabilities, but with each successive feature you discover and master, the development process becomes easier and faster.

Fireworks is the best in class web graphics software. It integrates very well with DreamWeaver. Creating animated GIFs is a snap, as is image optimization (file compression), image map creation, and exploring full tables (HTML and all!) for use in DreamWeaver.

You simply cannot go wrong with this package. Photoshop still has its place, but if you focus exclusively on the web and don't need to do exquisite image editing this bundle is all you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome
I've been doing web development since 1996 and, to be honest, I fought tooth and nail against giving up Windows Notepad as my web development tool of choice. Microsoft FrontPage really ruined web development software for me and I pretty much vowed to avoid such applications in the future. Fortunately, my boss insisted that I use Dreamweaver and even sent me off to classes to learn the nuts and bolts. And now I'm hooked.

Dreamweaver is simply awesome and I can't imagine ever going back. Whether your a novice or professional, you'll come to love Dreamweaver's simple interface and ability to tackle otherwise tedious tasks -- such as Cascading Style Sheets, tables, layers -- with ease. Adding Flash, Shockwave or Java is as simple as it can possibly be. I took classes on Dreamweaver, but only because my boss insisted. The software is pretty easy to learn, though those with web development experience will have a fuller understanding (and respect) for the capabilities of the product.

The single most powerful part of Dreamweaver is the use of templates, which allow you to use the same look and feel across multiple pages and have all those pages updated when you make changes to the template. This alone will save you hours!

Another great thing about Dreamweaver is that creates clean HTML. This is something that any developer who has ever had to edit the HTML directly will respect -- especially if you've ever tried to make sense of FrontPage HTML nonsense.

Finally, the FTP application in Dreamweaver is outstanding. It keeps track of every page, graphic, link, etc. in your site and any change to any of them is cascaded through the entire site -- automatically updating links where necessary. With a simple click of a button your site is uploaded to your webserver.

There are so many features I haven't covered, but with the little I have this product is worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stupidly Discontinued!
Get Macromedia Dreamweaver 4. They have turned this once great web design package into a hybrid cross of something that looks like Netscape/Flash and called it Dreamweaver MX 2004.

I used Dreamweaver MX 2004 for a month, uninstalled it and went back to Dreamweaver 4. It really is that terrible and the work space is terribly cluttered making it very hard to work within.

Bottom Line -- Get Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 instead if you can find it. Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 is a very good web design package that knocks Dreamweaver MX 2004 for ten. You will simply hate Dreamweaver MX 2004 when you install it on your system. I nearly barfed after a month of using that *new* completely hostile and non-user friendly piece of unstable and slow excuse for a web design software program.

Get this instead ... if you can find it...

5-0 out of 5 stars Review for Dreamweaver 5
-This review is for Dreamweaver 5- I absolutely love this software. I had Adobe Go Live but I never seemed to take to it like I did with Dreamweaver. Once it was installed within a day, I had made several webpages. As I continued to use it I learned more and more intuitively without needing much guidance from the manual. As a user you can create your webpages visually or in code mode, this makes it a great option for anyone no matter what your skill - it can be adjusted to suit your needs. You can learn and develop your webpage skills as much or as little as you like. You do not need to be intimidated by it's high price. You can learn it and the cost is well worth the output. ...
I don't have to look for anything else, I have hit paydirt with this program! If you are using Front Page or any other visual interface for ease, you know that you are trapped into a forced format, get this program and you will understand the freedom of control without fear!

5-0 out of 5 stars I feel the same way as the others.
Read the other reviews, I feel likewise about REALbasic. Good!

5-0 out of 5 stars REALbasic is GREAT!
REALsoftware produces REALbasic 4.5.1. There are two Macintosh versions to choose, the Classic and OSX, but this review will only cover the Classic version. Additionally, there are two editions of REALbasic, the Standard and the Professional.

The system requirements are a PowerPC or G3 or G4, MacOS 8.1 or later, 6.5 MB of hard drive space, and 4.5 MB RAM. The test system is a PowerPC 8100 with a G3 367 MHz daughter card, 136 MB RAM, several 4-8 GB hard drives, and MacOS 8.1 and 8.6, using Conflict Catcher 8. A 30-day demo is available for download from REALsoftware.

The REALbasic Demo

The REALbasic 4.5.1 demo contains the complete program. REALbasic allows programmers to build both Macintosh Classic and OSX programs, as well as PC programs. Programs compiled by the demo will operate for 5 minutes and only for the trial period. In order to continue using REALbasic beyond the 30 days, it is necessary to purchase a license. The Standard and Professional editions each contain the license, an application CD, and printed documentation. Included in the application CD are examples, tutorials, and electronic documentation. The demo can be obtained from the demo website .

The demo file is 8.2 MB. Using a 56K modem, the demo downloads in around 30 minutes. After REALbasic downloads just drag it to your applications folder, no extra installation is required. The demo folder contains the REALbasic 4.5.1 Classic program and six folders - IDE Extras, Internet Resources, Plugins, Read Me's, Soundtracks, and Stationary.

The IDE Extras folder has sample coding scripts and allows other applications to be added to the REALbasic menus. Weblinks useful to most REALbasic programmers, as well as links to other REALbasic developer sites, are included in the Internet Resources folder. Plugins add new functions to programs and REALbasic allows for this with the Plugins folder - simply install a plugin into the folder and it is installed as REALbasic starts up. Important development files and release notes are available in the Read Me's folder. Finally, the Soundtracks folder contains sound effects for use in REALbasic and the Stationary folder allows programmers to set default settings for projects. Most demo users, however, will not be using any of these folder features at the start.

The program started with no difficulties. Conflicts have been non-existent since installing the program on the test system, in either MacOS 8.1 or 8.6. During testing, Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 was run along with REALbasic to view the many PDF tutorials. On several occasions, Word 98, Netscape 4.74 and Adaptec Toast 4.1.1 have also run without any problems.

REALbasic has a toolbar-based interface, like PhotoShop and PageMaker. At start up, several windows appear: the Control Palette, the Project Window and its untitled Window Editor, and the Properties Window. Providing various Button controls, ListBox controls and EditField controls, the Control Palette contains over 30 interface objects. Drag and drop the required interface object to the Window Editor window to place it into the program. The Project Window lists the items in the program, such as menus, the untitled Window Editor, and any other windows that may be added. Each object, including interface objects, has a Properties Window. This window contains a list of properties and values for the currently selected object. When another object is selected, the Properties Window changes to show that objects properties.

Build a First Program

To build a first, simple program, such as "Hello World", start with the start-up windows: Control Icons window, Project window and its untitled Window Editor, and the Properties window. File > Save As the Project window to HelloWorld.rb. Change the untitled Window Editor name to "Hello World Program" on the Title field in the Properties window.

Drag and drop the PushButton Tool and the EditField Tool to the program window. Edit > Duplicate (Command-D) the PushButton Tool twice, and renamed the buttons "DisplayHello," "Clear," and "Quit" in their respective Properties Name field. Rename the EditField Tool "TextDisplay" in the Properties Name field. Place the "TextDisplay" EditField at the top of the window with the "Display Hello" and "Clear" buttons on the same line under it and the "Quit" button at the bottom.

Add the code to the PushButtons and the EditField. From the program window, Option-Tab to get the Code Editor window. From there, click the disclosure triangle to the left of the Controls icon and for each button add code. In the "Display Hello" button, place

TextDisplay.Text="Hello World"
in the Action item. The "Clear" button has
TextDisplay.Text=""
and the "Exit" button has
Beep Quit
added to the Action item. Choose Debug > Run (Command-R) to test the program.

Build the stand-alone applications by going to File > Build Settings. Choose whether to build a Macintosh program or a PC program or both. Name the program "Hello" for Macintosh and/or "Hello.exe" for PC (using the pop-up menu). Click OK and File > Build Application. REALbasic then builds the application(s). In all, the program should take about 15-20 minutes to build.

Additional Tutorials

REALsoftware also has several REALbasic Tutorial PDFs on their tutorial website . The main tutorial is 4.5 MB and involves building a simple Text Editor program, similar to SimpleText. In 12 separate chapters it covers such topics as Working with Documents (Ch. 4), Adding Drag and Drop to TextEditor (Ch. 6), and Printing Styled Text (Ch. 9). Each chapter is short and specific, explaining the steps necessary to build a workable program.

The Text Editor program is easy to build and will take several sessions with REALbasic. In order to get more experience in specific parts of program building, a new REALbasic programmer should refer back to the Text Editor program because it contains elements required in more advanced programs.

Other tutorial programs available include building an URL manager. There are also many websites that contain step-by-step REALbasic programming tutorials. REALbasic University is an excellent resource for the novice programmer, with 73 lessons at last count.

Conclusion

This is a very impressive program. The user-interface is excellent and the features are helpful. The possibility to build new programs for both Macintosh and PC is of great benefit. The demo was used on the test system for the full trial period, with at least one hour per day using the program. Many of the tutorials were used during that time to explore the program. While the learning curve can be steep for some new programming languages, the author found that this was not the case. In fact, learning REALbasic was much easier on one's own than his experience learning C in the classroom. The author believes that the novice would have little problem picking up the fundamentals of REALbasic, especially if the many Internet resources are used. While not yet achieving several hundred line programs, beginners can gain confidence as they build more applications, adding new and complex code and features to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars REALbasic Rocks!
I'll let you know right off the bat here, I love to use REALbasic, and I have done so for about three years now as an avid Mac hobbyist programmer. REALbasic lets you write your own stand-alone applications for both the Mac and PC platforms. I don't do Windows, but I have shared an item or two with some of my PC users friends, much to their amazement.

REALbasic is a rich development environment for both professional, beginner and the curious. For me it has been a teaching tool. I always wanted to try and write my own programs, and now I can! I have tried many other programming languages and either found them too hard or not engaging enough to commit the time to learn them. Don't be fooled, any programming language takes a bit of time to learn, but for me, REALbasic has been totally worth it.

With REALbasic you can create an almost endless array of software titles. Anything from games to serious work related applications. I'm like a guy tinkering in his wood shop in the garage, I'll jump from subject to subject building little sample projects, like a little paint program, a GPS reader and a hang man game, to name a few.

One of the most surprising elements of using REALbasic, is the amount of support you can get from the developers of REALbasic, REAL software and the hordes of REALbasic users everywhere. The net is full of web sites that feature REALbasic examples. If you subscribe to the REALbasic New User group, you can post most any question or problem you have and I assure you, you will receive a quick and useful response. Learning by examples is a great way to learn to program.

REALbasic's interface is similar to a drawing program, a natural and familiar way of doing things on a Mac. You select an item from a tools palette and drag it to a window area you are working on. This allows you to graphically place the buttons, text and other things that you need for your program to interact with your user. Geeky word for this is User Interface (UI).

REALbasic's programming language is as you would expect, a version of BASIC. This is a modern BASIC language that encourages and supports the concept of Object Oriented Programming. Code is executed in a hierarchy of events.

REALbasic can be purchased in several versions, that is, there is a professional version and a standard edition. Optional packages are offered in the form of CD examples, Developer Documentation and Language References. REALbasic is upgraded with a new version about every six months or so. Theses upgrade prices are very reasonable and will vary depending on which version you have and the extra's you want.

My favorite area's in REALbasic are:

1) Drawing. Sounds silly, but getting your computer to "draw" things on your screen is not easy!

2) RB3D Space. REALbasic has a very cool "class" that lets you draw things in three dimensions. Very cool.

3) The on-line reference. At anytime, you hit command-one and up pops your handy dandy reference area.

4) The auto complete feature. Most languages are strict when it comes to typing in the right typed words. This one little simple feature will save you countless hours of typing.

5) As I've said above, the supportive nature of the people who make REALbasic. When was the last time Mr. X from company ABC emailed you with a response to a question you had about their software you just purchased?

If you're ready for a new challenge and adventure in to the area of computer programming AND you own a Mac, get REALbasic.

5-0 out of 5 stars REALbasic is awesome
This is a fantastic development environment, especially for those who are fairly new to programming. I tried to learn several other languages, but could never grasp the concepts. REALbasic is easy to learn and use, and it's also helped to understand object orientation as a plus. If you can afford, spring for the Professional version instead of Standard. That buys you database access to a variety of back ends and Windows compilation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very powerful for the price
I have used this product since its first commercial release. It is fairly easy to learn, is very powerful and the professional edition (you can upgrade from this version) allows you to use create database and Windows applications.

I used this product to develop a very sophisticated spacecraft simulator A-OK! The Wings of Mercury. I also use it as a consultant programmer. REALbasic programming work accounts for over 80% of my revenue.

The best thing about this product is not the product, but the people behind it. REAL Software is a very dedicated bunch of folks. Additionally, there is a real growing community of users that support each other. From old hand like myself (software developer for over 22 years) to newbies, all are welcome and all help each other.

It's not perfect, bugs do creep up, but REAL Software is always participating in discussion boards and mailing lists and is VERY responsive to fixing critical bugs.

REALbasic gets updated about twice a year. The upgrade prices are reasonable. Even the Professional version is much less expensive that other development systems.

I am convinced that this product will become the number one method of developing software for the Macintosh in the coming years. Additionally, it will also provide a nice alternative to using Visual Basic for developing Windows applications.

Great product, great company. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

It's impossible to sum up the slickness of CodeWarrior in a fewparagraphs, but it's fair to say that this package stays one step ahead of youas you're working on any software project. The Integrated Development Environment (IDE) itself hums along after a multi-CD install, and acts as your secretary, double-checker, project manager, and overall programming resource. The theme that we found apparent throughout our use of this huge package was its versatility. Many packages claim to offer flexibility in the numerous functions and features it can perform, but CodeWarrior backs up its claim with one of the smartest organization systems out there.

ThisCodeWarrior package tackles every element of a new software project, from thetechnical aspects to the project management and product release. Groupingtogether an editor, compiler, linker, and debugger--all through a common GUI, not as separate "bundled" features--offers complete integration of all components of your project. You'll find the interface familiar, although if you're new to the Metrowerks family you may have an initial phase consisting of just getting the hang of some of their terminology. But have little fear: you can easily polish off your understanding of how to get the most out of CodeWarrior through the free online courses offered at Metrowerks' Web site.

CodeWarrior's versatility shines through in the choicesavailable to you: you can pick your platform, your programming language, andyour target processor, all from one place. So if you're a fan of C, C++, orJava, and like to use Windows 95/NT, Mac OS, or Solaris, you can get numerous combinations out of the one application.

Bringing it all together--workinghard as the director of your musical software production, and never acting asthe restrictive, bossy stage mother--is the project window. It's a comfortableplace, with a strong resemblance to common file management systems like WindowsExplorer. Add and remove files, organize them into groups, reorganize them: theproject window keeps all of the relationships straight. And if your project is large, you can break it into subprojects for ease of use.

And maybe for youit's the little things: we particularly liked some of the customizable optionsthat really made the workspace more efficient and homey. You'll also find thatcool tools are at your fingertips, like the dead code stripper and a symbolicbrowser new to this edition.

Because this CodeWarrior package isn'tlanguage-specific, advanced users or those loyal to one language may find a few(but not many) areas that are slim on features. But if you're looking for anall-in-one package or are only interested in learning one IDE for all yourprogramming needs, this is the way to go. And in light of the fact thatMetrowerks is working hard on improving the product through numerous updates andrecently released support for the QNX and Linux platforms, CodeWarrior isincreasing in versatility as time goes by, rather than becoming archaic.--Emilie Dirks ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best choice for game development on the Mac
As editor of idevgames.com I feel that CodeWarrior is the best tool for application and game development on the Apple Macintosh. Metrowerks dropped PASCAL support but they will have a plug-in to handle PASCAL in the near future.

4-0 out of 5 stars The only game in town
This is the only real choice for Mac programming now, since Apple's free development tools don't support OS9. That's not a bad thing. CodeWarrior offers pretty much everything you need. PowerPlant is excellent for quick development, and the editor has plenty of useful features.

On the downside, the debugger doesn't work very well under OS X PB, and the printed documentation isn't included. But it's still a great program.

1-0 out of 5 stars No more Pascal?!
This would be a 5-star IDE if not for Metrowerks' decision to drop Pascal support. That fact was unbeknownst to me when I bought this upgrade, which is now worthless because of my investment in Pascal-based legacy products. Metrowerks was kind enough to send me version 4.0, however, and promises to re-introduce OS X Pascal support at a later date.

4-0 out of 5 stars CodeWarrior Pro 6.0
CodeWarrior is a nice compiler and integrated development environment. My only complaint is the lack of documentation. Information on how to use their API's is hard to find. ... Read more
