QuarkXPress 5.0 streamlines print, Web, and PDF workflows by importing and exporting documents in dozens of file formats, including HTML and PDF, as well as XML format. The software's new tables tool sports typographic and image controls that create graphically rich tables in no time. QuarkXPress 5.0 also adds a new layers tool that isolates items within documents, letting you manage hundreds of document variants and making it an ideal tool for separating multiple design elements within a document.

With version 5.0, the QuarkXPress design environment gets Web savvy. Add drop-down lists, rollovers, hyperlinks, image maps, and metatags to your Web page designs. The product's powerful XTensions interface lets developers enhance QuarkXPress to meet the needs of unique publishing workflows, while its new License Administrator benefits publishers with multiple-seat installations by helping larger organizations share the use of a smaller number of licenses. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money if you already own Quark 4
Although QuarkXpress 5.0 delivers everything its previous version offers, frankly, it doesn't offer enough in addition to these things to merit a $900 upgrade. In fact, this new version has some very serious drawbacks--namely, it is not native to OS X, meaning it has to run in the sometimes choppy "Classic" system. This leads to major refresh problems that can be quite a hassle. In addition, some of the things that have always bothered me about Quark--the necessity of clipping paths, making images transparent, etc.--are still there. I'm actually in the process of switching over to Adobe InDesign, which fixes all these problems AND is native to OSX. Until Quark comes out with a patch or an upgrade that will make their program native to OSX, pass on buying this upgrade, which offers little for the extremely high price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still The Best
I have both InDesign and Quark and I have to say that Quark is the most reliable and efficient of the two. InDesign is a PageMaker that aspires to be Quark. Especially great is the new Quark feature that collects the fonts as well as images. Before you could only collect the images! No more searching around for all those fonts. Quark crashes far less than all the other programs I use combined.

1-0 out of 5 stars Growing long in the tooth...
Old technology being rapidly overtaking by InDesign 2.0, especially if you want to use OS X. If you are just starting in page layout, use InDesign. If you have been doing it for awhile and have a lot of documents in xpress format, byte the bullet now and convert them to InDesign. You are going to have to at some point anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quark Excels for Page Layout
This is the one you want. Not PageMaker. Not InDesign. And whatever you do, don't buy Publisher.

Buy Quark.

Sure, you'll lay down some serious bucks. But you want to do the job right. Service bureaus will love you, printing houses will get the job done for you as you expect, and you'll save money over the long haul.

If you've gotten to the point you are looking online, you have a good idea what your options are. I've used Quark, PageMaker and InDesign professionally. Given the choice, I'll take Quark.

If you are a beginning designer, or expect to be doing design in your work (I work in communications, and design as a secondary task), then this is your best choice. Look on the job postings, and see that more places expect this application more than their competition.

There are some new features, and, depending what you are into, not all may be important. For me, I dig the tables and layers. I can do less work to do the same job.

The tables feature is less clunky than in previous versions of Quark. You can manipulate them more efficiently and cleanly, and have tables within tables within tables.

Layers are great for creating various versions of a document within the same context. Rather than create a bunch of master pages, the layers option is much handier.

Also very cool is the web-design aspect. It isn't quite Dreamweaver, but it has increased its capacity to be opened in Dreamweaver. Design in Quark, then open it in Dreamweaver. This allows better control within your graphic design department, especially in smaller businesses where the web guy is not necessarily a strong designer.

There is the XML export option, but I've not explored this. It seems to open the door for better online publishing, however, and is worth figuring out, especially in light of Quark's web design strengths.

I fully recommend Quark 5.0.

Amazon.com Review

Whether you're looking to upgrade your current software or your existingskill set, the latest edition of Adobe FrameMaker is chock-full of usefulfunctionality that packs a punch. Those new to FrameMaker will find theinterface a bit underwhelming: unlike many other packages (from Adobe andotherwise), this software does not present dozens of buttons in the initialworkspace. Rather, a very modest few sit beneath the menu bar, and they aren'tterribly inviting. This means that users might overlook some features or growannoyed by having to hunt for a certain treatment that ensues.

Aside from the introductory shock, FrameMaker is unsurprisingly solid: version7.0 has integrated an improved FrameMaker with its FrameMaker+SGML cousin, creating a full-functioned document design and distribution tool. This versionis enterprise-ready, with tools that allow for distribution options that wehadn't even considered. FrameMaker is capable of compiling your documents into abook, mapping these out in the proper format (from table of contents to yourindex), and handling powerful graphic design and printing options, such aswhether to knock out or overprint color in graphics. The package handles bothconditional (content that changes from version to version) and variable text(text used in various places throughout the document) with sharp and easyaccuracy.

New to this version is the Quadralay WebWorks Publisher Standard Edition 7.0(WWPSE7), which provides robust features for creating HTML, Dynamic HTML, andXML output. WWPSE7 exports text, graphics, and tables to these formats, as wellas automatically generating cascading style sheets for the page. Among manyother functions, it can specify how navigation bars appear at the top and bottomof a page and map FrameMaker content to screen-reader output. Again, this toolworks with great refinement and is an impressive addition to the FrameMakerpackage.

If you work on a team, you'll appreciate Adobe's very friendly (and quitepowerful) features that make team-tagging a book project much easier. Definableoptions include choosing which documents to share, server access and setup, andfolder structures. Other revision management tools include the use of changebars (available both automatically and for selected revisions), word andcharacter count tools, and version comparison for both a summary of changes or acompletely merged document.

We also appreciated the supporting documentation: the 600-plus page user manualencompasses Windows, Macintosh, and Unix users, calling attention todifferences. The online version of the manual offers more information, althoughin a less handsome format. Also included is the XML Cookbook, a goodfirst-step manual for learning to work in structured work environments.

Overall, if you can get over any initial disappointment concerning theinterface, Adobe FrameMaker delivers a powerful authoring and publishingsolution. --Emilie Herbst ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Product
I bought this product because mainly, I've heard Photoshop is a good program & I've also always wanted to make those little ".pdf" files you get in README's sometimes. The product is excellent, and although the price is somewhat high, it's worth it. It takes a bit of getting used to if you're not a computer geek, but I would definitely recommend it for the professional, web designer, or overachiever. If you have the money, you might want to invest in it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New horizon
The CS series offers a great new horizon for Adobe products on OS X. As a designer at an extremely busy design agency, we have found the CS series to be a huge improvement. InDesign is proving to be the victor in the war with Quark. The massive diversity and ease of use of this program is paramount to cross media integration (print to web). These versions of Photoshop and Illustrator are simply the best. The usability of GoLive needs some tweaking, I much prefer Macromedia's Dreamweaver MX 2004. But all in all, hats off to Adobe!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what you need for both the Web and Print!
Photoshop... Not much needed to be said about it! Not much out there with as much to compare it to.

Illustrator... I simply love this product! It is easy to use and the results port perfectly into the rest of the suite.

InDesign... It takes a little getting use to, but then, it is EXTREMELY easy to use. This one is finally very stable! It is actually fun mixing this with illustrator. The two work extremely well together and produce expectional results! Add a few Photoshop edited graphics to the mix and there is nothing to slow you down!

Version Cue... Haven't used this very much. Nice addition though.

GoLive... If you need an editor and you use Photoshop, This fits in really well.

The one thing that puts this set above all the rest is the integration of PDF across the entire platform and the interoperability between the product.

The down side is that they still need to work on a SINGLE interface. I like the way InDesign's interface works with the tool bars hugging the sides of the screens. I wish they would impliment that across all of the products. Still, in terms of pure functionality, it is really hard to beat this suite! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Adobe's FrameMaker 6.0 allows any author or organization to print orpublish documents and books of virtually any size in a variety of electronicformats (including PDF, HTML, and XML). Whether you distribute reports, technical documents, or even full-length books, the latest version of FrameMakeroffers a powerful mix of features that will let you move your publishing effortsonline with a minimum of effort.

Just as Adobe once pioneered paper-based desktop publishing with its PageMaker software, FrameMaker makes the same claim for electronic publishing inthe Internet era. First and foremost, FrameMaker lets you lay out your pagecontent with a capable set of tools and wizards. You can assemble small or largedocuments of even hundreds of pages from separate files (which can be importedfrom Microsoft Word or WordPerfect files as well as PDF and other formats). Youcan also add hyperlinks and graphics to your document easily.

In testing, we assembled an "e-book" from a literary manuscript of over 200pages, broken into a dozen chapters. FrameMaker includes solid word-processingabilities--even a spell checker and thesaurus--plus text and graphics layouttools, so it was easy to add chapter headings and tweak text as we created thelarger document. A real strength here is that as you add pages, FrameMakerupdates all links (along with page numbers) between the table of contents, chapters, and index. The application includes a separate book file format andoffers templates for blank chapters and other book components, so you can createand store books easily. An absolutely indispensable feature here is the abilityto search and replace words across all sections of a document.

Another notable strength of FrameMaker 6.0 is its support for today's electronicpublishing standards. Once your FrameMaker documents are assembled, you candistribute them in HTML, PDF, and XML. A separate bundled utility, Quadralay'sWebWorks Publisher Standard Edition, takes you even further with support for XMLwith Cascading Stylesheets (CSS) and XSL. (These options let you view yourcontent with more precise formatting within today's browsers.) In all, with itsstrong mix of layout features and support for a wide variety of electronicstandards, FrameMaker will help anyone publish documents online successfully.--Rich Dragan--This text refers to the Windows version of thissoftware. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Getting a little outdated, but the best for long documents
The user interface hasn't changed much since Adobe bought FrameMaker from Frame Technology about 6 years ago. Aside from being integrated with Acrobat, Frame has not been brought into the Adobe fold with the other Adobe products.

This complaint aside, FrameMaker is still the best tool available for what it does best, long structured documents. Anyone that's tried to write a long technical manual in Microsoft Word will appreciate FrameMaker's ability to divide the document into logical chapters and tie them all together with its book function.

FrameMaker supports cross-references, integrated drawing commands and the ability to generate a number of lists and tables (tables of contents, tables of figures, alphabetical index, etc.) An integrated equation editor is also available for typesetting equations.

FrameMaker is not for the faint at heart; it requires a disciplined approach to your documents and planning before writing, but for the types of manuals that it was designed for, its still the best tool available at an affordable price. A variant product, FrameMaker+SGML provides SGML support for about half the cost of competing products.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Word Processor for Book Writers
Yes, it's more expensive than Word 98 or AppleWorks, two fine word processors that may provide all you need. Nevertheless, FrameMaker (called "Frame" by many users) is my tool of choice for working on book projects, from non-fiction to novels.

Why? Partly because Frame is fast, stable, and just a pleasure to work with. But that alone wouldn't justify the price. Frame's real power for writers comes from its Book feature, which uses a Book Window to display the chapters of a book. Chapters are worked on separately and saved as individual files, but Frame manages and presents them in the Book Window as part of a single book. You can add, delete, and edit chapters as you go without a problem, and Frame takes care of autonumbering your pages so that the page numbers in one chapter pick up where the last chapter left off. The Book Window also displays the total page count, a very helpful feature for writers who try to work by a daily quota, or just like to see constant progress being made (don't we all!).

Until you see the Book feature in action, it's hard to understand how useful it is, but if you've ever worked with a large document as a single file in Word, you'll appreciate Frame's ability to handle smaller, manageable sections of text that are all maintained as part of the same book.

As for fear that Frame is too hard to learn -- don't worry! The Book Window feature, and all basic word processing in Frame, is very easy, really no more difficult than any other word processor. The main difference is that instead of Styles, Frame uses Paragraph and Character "tags" that are stored in catalogues that you can access and modify at any time. Honestly, Frame's implentation of many formatting features, such as tags, master pages, and the ability to import all the formatting from one document into another, was much easier for me to learn than Word ever was. It all works and functions quite logically, if not intuitively, and you'll quickly get the hang of how Frame gets the job done. Once you catch on, you may find, as I did, that Frame is really much simpler, smarter, and more efficient than many other word processors.

Here's my advice. Buy a copy of FrameMaker 5.5.6 for Dummies -- it's available here on Amazon, and it's a great value. It's very well-written and organized, and includes much of what you need to know in the first 100 pages. Start there, then read the later chapter on working with Books, and you'll be ready to roll. Even better, demo versions are included on the CD-ROM (although the Mac version requires a demo serial # that you'll have to get from Adobe), so you can practice what you learn and decide if this product is right for you. Although version 6 adds some new and helpful features, it works almost exactly the same as v.5.5.6, so your time learning that earlier version is time very well spent.

Again, this is a professional writing and layout tool that anyone who has ever used any word processor can master very quickly. If you write novels or non-fiction books, give this a try! Once I started using it, I couldn't go back to a regular word processor for full-length book projects. ... Read more
