2-0 out of 5 stars Time, time, time
It's incompatible with my MacLinkPlus; everything must become Appleworks 5 before it can then be translated into AW6 and the same thing works in reverse. I can't cut & past text from my old fave WordPerfect for Mac. And it's the slowest somemabitch, at least in iMac X+, that I've ever had the impatience to work with. Spinning wheel: working, working, working, all right already: finish working! It's basically sound, but I can't call up the usually codes to see what is really going on, as I could with WordPerfect. Its translation to html is a nice attempt but full of hesitancies, mistranslations, & that goddamned eternal spinning wheel: processeing, processing. I really think I *could* like this word process if they fixed up the speed, efficiency, & translatability, & added the "seeing within" features I like. [I had hoped WordPerfect would make something for Mac X+, but they say no.]

Amazon.com Product Description

HyperCard 2.4 is a powerful development tool created by Apple for theMacintosh. Notable for its versatility, HyperCard is a dynamic tool for creating custom software solutions for users at all levels of skill and experience. HyperCard features like navigation, hypertext, media integration, and scripting have greatly influenced the evolution of the World Wide Web. HyperCard organizes information into easy-to-use "stacks" of cards through which users can navigate and search for the information they need. By simply clicking on a button, they can view related text, see a graphic, hear a sound, watch a QuickTime movie, or listen to text out loud.

HyperCard 2.4's new features include a suite of new commands and properties allowing users that write HyperTalk scripts to have unprecedented access to QuickTime functionality. HyperCard 2.4 has the ability, via a HyperTalk script, to loop a movie providing continuous play for unattended applications like multimedia kiosks. With QuickTime's ability to synchronize a text version of a movie's script with the movie, HyperCard 2.4 now allows the user to immediately navigate to any point in the QuickTime movie text using a simple find command. In addition, HyperCard users can also resize, flip, mirror, rotate, or skew a QuickTime movie. HyperCard allows developers to create new interactive applications for the classroom, for entertainment, or wherever the need for multimedia presentations exists. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The MOST intuitive of all creative solutions!
I started with Hypercard 1.0 when it was bundled free with the first mac computers. I kept updating it until I felt that I had to move on and learn some of the new programs like LiveMotion. Still I kept going back to Hypercard to work on various ideas. I had written some of my own scripts -- some of them amazingly complex and nothing else could suit my needs. Other people have not been able to explain why Hypercard is so wonderful and I can't either -- all I know is that it is the MOST intuitive of all creative solutions! There is nothing like it! I wish the original Hypercard designers would read some of these reviews and begin updating it again by popular demand. But never mind, Hypercard 2.4 is exceedingly powerful.

5-0 out of 5 stars HyperCard: The "Swiss Army Knife" Nobody Knows
HyperCard is an application unlike most others. What it does is, it lets you build your own tools. For your own purposes. The way you want them to work. It wouldn't be inappropriate to compare HyperCard to MS Visual Basic, because both of them *do* pretty much the same thing; the difference is *how* they do it.
Visual Basic veils its power behind cryptic dialog boxes and unforgiving syntax; HyperCard goes out of its way to make its power *accessible* to the user, with a minimum of fuss and bother. With Visual Basic, you're pretty much *required* to muck around with a semi-arcane programming language if you want to get *anything* done; with HyperCard, the English-like language (HyperTalk) is something you can *choose* to delve into when you decide you want to do *more* than you were already doing.
Here's a concrete example of the HyperTalk languge; a "handler" (mini-program) which lets you move something around by clicking and dragging.

  on mouseDown
repeat until the mouse is up
set the location of me to the mouseLoc
    end repeat
  end mouseDown

As I said, HyperTalk is rather English-like. If you can figure out how and why this handler does its thing, congratulations -- you're ready to start "rolling your own" with HyperCard! Bad news: Sadly, Apple Computer has never really known what to do with HyperCard, and has never made any serious attempts to publicize nor sell (nor even support) the program. Good news: Feed the keyword "hypercard" into google.com (or whatever other search engine you prefer), and you'll find any number of links to the community of HyperCard users.
Q: So after all that, what can you do with HyperCard?
A: What do you *want* to do with HyperCard? People have used it to build games (most notably Myst), educational software, personal information managers, utilities, multimedia presentations, productivity applications, and God only knows what else.
HyperCard. It might just have a place on *your* hard drive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Software Erector set - easy to use, powerful results
This is a great piece of software for many uses:

- learning fundamentals of programming

- creating your own custom software

- developing applications for profit

Very easy to learn:

- You can create simple software without writing any code

- The scripting language built-in is very powerful and also very intuitive (the syntax is very english-like)

- All of the objects and code are re-usable so you can repurpose works you have made and share (or borrow) from others

Polished, and powerful features:

- Integrate color graphics, sound, and quicktime movies (Myst was created with HyperCard)

- Control other software and share data

- Extend the language with a wide range of external commands and functions

4-0 out of 5 stars Oh, HyperCard!
Oh, HyperCard! Alas, HyperCard! Poor, misunderstood, underappreciated HyperCard. It's a floor polish. It's a salad dressing. It's...(SNAP!) oops, sorry. Got a bit carried away there.

How to describe HyperCard is a problem which has perplexed better minds than mine. Suffice to say that if you're looking for a better way to create specialized applications for your Macintosh, you could do worse than to try HyperCard, Apple's amazing "Software Construction Kit". At first glance, HyperCard is a remarkably flexible database manager built on the "index card" metaphor. But with the judicious use of HyperTalk, HyperCard's built in scripting language, it's much more. Using myself as an example, with little prior programming experience I put together a simple but elegant application which I use to track and sort qualifying results and starting lineups for my local Speedway, and I'm currently working on an animated game to help teach my five year old son how to draw his letters. Others have done much more, and plenty of examples can be found all over the Internet. Most of these "stacks" you can use for free; such is the HyperCard developers' ethic.

Yes, HyperCard does have its limitations. Its color tools are somewhat lacking, and its last significant update was quite some time ago. Reports would have it officially "dead" as far as Apple is concerned, which for all intents and purposes means no further development. And while HyperTalk is rather intuitive, it is still a programming language with at least a slight learning curve. And programming can be WORK. Intellectually challenging, yes, but work nonetheless.

But so what? If you use only the stacks that come with it, you'll get your money's worth from HyperCard. And I suspect you'll do more, lots more. Its capabilities as a multimedia presentation tool should be more than obvious, and consider that the fabulous "Myst" was created using HyperCard. You'll likely find a use for it in most every portion of your computer life. And when you do, you'll question as so many already have how such a far-sighted company such as Apple could ever neglect such a useful, powerful, and--let's face it--inexpensive tool such as HyperCard. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Lame product by Smith Micro Software is very close to ....!
Completely misleading representation of a product that is nothing but a lure for web hosting services.

The software is noted out of date right on the disc (inside) and they tell you must "upgrade" on their site (on a sticker).

What they do not clearly describe is that you are limited to only 50 items to sell, and that it will only create a basic text order form that the user would have to print for postal mail or fax. This program does not even give you an option to email the order with or without credit card!

What they also do not tell you is that if you want to have more than 50 items, you could list more if you pay them [price] a month. Which is something you can do securely online, without software, for much less with various hosting services.

And finally, the final page result looks like a child created the "catalog". Formatted for screen resolution of 800x600 only. If your screen resolution is anything but, the text will overflow onto the cheesy background images, and juvenile buttons.

It is a completely inferior product that should be avoided at any price. You do not want this garbage on your hard drive. Smith Micro Software will be on my black list forever.

A completely unprofessional product and company. I of course returned the software as "incompatible" as there is no way I will be stuck with such garbage.... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars AVOID THIS PRODUCT!!!
We downloaded the trial version of this product and loved its interface, and the organized, user-friendly way it catalogs digital images. Unfortunately, when we purchased the product and attempted to catalog our 1,300 images, it completely failed to perform. The program hangs with every use and it takes minutes, literally, to perform even simple tasks. We have 640MB of RAM and a Pentium 4 processor, which should be more than adequate for any program to run at a suitable speed. I asked it to sync a file with 30, 4 MB images one night before I left, and when I came in the next morning I found it just completing the task.

Despite its issues, the most disappointing aspect of this product has been the technical support. I recently sent a request about PCD files, and was asked to explain what a PCD file is. There is no excuse for technical support not to have at least a general idea of each of their "supported" file types. I have been in touch with technical support constantly over the past six months, and not one person has offered the least bit of insight into our issues. They simply repeat their initial suggested remedies again and again. A letter to their management returned a single phone call. When I tried to follow-up, my calls/e-mails, etc. were never returned.

SAVE YOURSELF THE HEADACHES AND AVOID THIS PRODUCT!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice product but a bite expansive for its features
This software enables you to create a visual database of your folders. Nice monitoring, easy previews, and quite user friendly.
But the features are quite limited and I would have expect some more for the listed price.

Amazon.com Review

While it won't replace the desktop computer any time soon, the handheld PDA is catching up and is becoming rather indispensable. Documents To Go 4.0 Professional makes several popular document formats easily portable and even allows basic editing on the run. Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files synch between PDA and multiple computers quickly and completely, and can be viewed on the Palm screen with surprising readability. Users can edit Word and Excel files, though the range of editing options is necessarily more limited than on desktop machines, and some files (especially complex Word documents) are tough to work with.

Installation is pretty simple; like all Palm software, there are several steps, but most users should find themselves synching files shortly. The interface is nearly transparent and the coders took pains to reproduce the look and feel of Microsoft Office. The Acrobat reader is a nice feature, even if the images are stripped to save memory. Despite this, RAM will be a problem for some users, who will undoubtedly have to make some tough decisions about which files to keep on the Palm.

Minor memory and editing problems aside, Documents To Go 4.0 Professional makes on-the-run synching and file-fixing a snap. And while the PDA won't replace the desktop machine anytime soon, the laptop better watch out. --Rob Lightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Upgraded to latest Documents to Go 4 including Add-on kit last week. Have always been impressed with the main product, but the add-on kit is excellent. The mail sync (we use Lotus Notes) and the handling of attachments on my Palm M505 is the best I have tried - smooth, reliable, hassle free, straightforward to use.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not up to snuff anymore
This was the coolest thing I loaded on my Palm after I first got it from amazon. But I later discovered that far better solutions exist on the market from other companys like bluenomad software and cutting edge software. Since my copy was free, it wasn't bad, but noone should spend any money on this product when such great alternatives as quickoffice and wordsmith are available for much less money and have much better features. There is no real formatting in the word processor, you can't set the font, the spreadsheet frequently looses information, and stuff.
But for first time users, it is a nice way to see what the Palm can do I think.

4-0 out of 5 stars Makes your PDA useful.
This software renders your Palm Pilot far more useful. You can deal with text documents and spreadsheets on your PDA with this.

A must have item.

5-0 out of 5 stars Documents to Go
Will you be making a version to go on the Jonarda 720 hand helds? I had it on my palms and loved it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Print Word Documents Directly to IR Capable Printers
As a heavy word processing user on my Palm via Documents to Go (please see my reviews for Docs To Go 3.0 elsewhere on Amazon), I was happy to upgrade to the newest version, 4.0, as soon as it came out.

I was even happier to discover (after visiting the DataViz website) that accessory programs -- Docs To Print and IR Print, both available from doctoprint.irprint.com -- would enable me to print MS Word documents from my Palm directly to any number of IR (infrared) capable printers from HP, Canon and Sipix (with no PC or cables necessary).

I now own a HP DeskJet 990Cse, Canon BJC-55 and Sipix A6 printer, all of which allow me to print directly from my Palm, the latter two of which are portable.

I carry the little Sipix A6 printer (which uses A6 size thermal paper) in my briefcase. I take the Canon BJC-55 (ink jet, letter size) printer with me on business trips. And I've placed a second HP DeskJet 990Cse printer elsewhere in my house where I print from my Palm -- without the use of a PC.

As we all know, with its relatively small screen, performing word processing on one's Palm can sometimes be difficult. Being able to print a hard copy -- anywhere you might need it -- is thus truly a godsend.

With Docs To Go 4.0 (and Docs To Print and IR Print), and with the IR capable printers listed above, I can now word process -- and print -- anywhere in my house (or the world) from my Palm. (No PC required.)

Isn't life wonderful? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatly expands PowerPoint and also works with Excel
If you do a lot of PowerPoint presentations this program will be your constant companion. It's a PowerPoint plug-in that provides the following capabilities:
- auto-enhance slides and graphics, including beveling, anti aliasing (for sharper text), gradient fills, text kerning and better shadow effects.
- slideshow timing controls and better annotation abilities
- ability to manage slides more effectively: you can jump to any slide with a click, reorder slides quickly and have more transition and color scheme options

This application also works with Excel, and greatly shortens the time it takes to create a chart, as well as provide more control over the chart's appearance.

The main value of this program is for the frequent presenter or the presentation developer. It will save time and quickly pay for itself if you develop or deliver more than a presentation a week. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The only real solution for large graphic collections
Portfolio has been around for a long time. I've used v3 for several years. It is the only real solution I know of for handling large collections of images. (Some of these commercial image libraries have used Portfolio to ship their collections.)

Portfolio is used for cataloging image files of almost any kind: JPEG, GIF, Line Art, from any source. It can scan a hard disk and automatically create catalogs of images it finds. You can add keywords to the images and other descriptive information, then search for them later.

For people with very large image libraries (mine is in the 8,000+ range) this is a lifesaver. What images have dogs in them? What about public activities? Pictures of grandma? If you've entered it right, finding your pictures later will be very easy.

Recommended for anyone with a penchant for digital photos, or expecially photographers or graphic artists with digital libraries.

I can't say much about the upcoming Version 6, but the features and interface improvements look very promising.

4-0 out of 5 stars Try it!
I purchased a copy some time back and use it all the time. It saves me hours tracking down the images and graphics that I need to use.

After reading the other reviews I would suggest people visit the Extensis site for all the information they need. You could try a demo version!

Cheers
