5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh Toast!
I've been an avid user of Adaptec's disc burning software Toast for a little over a year. So I was a bit disappointed when Adaptec decided to let Roxio handle the production of the software. However, when upgrade season came around I still went out and bought myself a full copy of Toast 5. The program received a MAJOR overhaul and it was all for the best. New features include a shiny new interface and background burning. This means that now you can set your CD-RW to burn a CD and then use other software without fear that your machine will lock up or screw up your CD. It also boasts the ability to burn VCDs. There's only one con to the software... Background burning means that now my petty excuses to stop working during burning time are history... It's a superlative addition to your Mac burning needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great software even if it does cost money.
I won a "pc only" cdrw and was a little frustrated due the fact that it was from a mac contest. I got a copy of Toast Titanium and it was able to recognize even this unsupported cdrw and it works great.

Best features are backgound burning. You can actually use other applications while your cd burns. The latest update at the Roxio site supports CD text. So the song title will appear in the window of your CD player if you have that feature.

The manual is good and explains how to burn a bootable CD and a CD that will be recognized by a PC.

You also get CD SpinDoctor in the deal this will let you record tapes, vinyl, or anything else you plug into the audio in with the cord that is included in the box. If you update to the latest version of Toast Titanium you will have to update CD SpinDoctor, too (or it will break).

There's a CD label software include as well.

Summary: Easy to use, good manual, background burning, CD text support. CD copy button to make copying really easy.

5-0 out of 5 stars May be preferable to Toast 6
Apple's iTunes does fine by burning CD's, but Toast is handier for burning and copying non-musical files and documents. In fact, Toast 5, with the bundled Spin Doctor, is the only way to go if you're converting analog to digital and editing out "dead space" and other objectionable noise on the wave forms. Toast 6, on the other hand, includes an "improved" Spin Doctor (v. 2) that makes the aforesaid editing a laborious, imprecise, and impractical exercise. If you're planning to do manual editing of extended audio tracks--a radio broadcast, for example--forget about Toast 6. But now you have another messy problem: Toast 5 is not designed for OSX, and Roxio no longer offers as a download the necessary upgrade to make Spin Doctor, v. 1, compatible with OSX.

The solution? Go with Toast 5 and use it in OS9. Or switch to a shareware program like Sound Studio (more complicated and time-consuming than Spin Doctor). Or switch to a PC and pick up Cool Edit.

2-0 out of 5 stars ripped off
I bought toast 5 to burn my vinyl onto CD.
It came with SpinDoctor.
I was promised a FREE upgrade to OSX. When I upgraded my OS, I went to download the upgrade. Though Toast 5 could be upgraded, Spin Doctor was not available. After weeks of waiting, I got a response from Roxio saying that SpinDoctor was no longer available from them. I wrote several letters. They offered no remedy, just kept me waiting, but oh yes, they would be happy to SELL me a copy of Toast 6 with the new component that replaces SpinDoctor and is OSX compatible. Boy do I feel ripped off. Toast worked great, but I will never trust Roxio again. I certainly don't want to give them any more money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Mac users
Great overall for Macs. I got this software mainly due to the fact that iPhoto does not allow for multisession burning. Using this software allows me to achieve this although it not as easy as I originally thought (nothing is as easy as using Mac software - oh well). Also, I had some problems making cross-platform (Mac/PC) discs.
Additionally, the included Discus software is pretty good for making labels. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spring Cleaning Every Day for Macs
Aladdin SpringCleaning™ is a great application for Mac OS 8.5 to 9.1. It has 13 separate features: Alias Fixer; Document Finder (finds documents of the same type); Duplicates Remover; Empty Folder Remover; Fat App Slimmer (searches for fat binary applications); File Checker (searches for damaged files); Font Remover; Help Remover; Internet Cache Remover (searches for cache, cookie, and history files stored by internet browsers); Mac Uninstaller (searches for a specified program and its associated files); Orphan Adopter; Orphaned Pref Remover; Storage Items Remover (searches for items stored in the Storage Folders).

It is very easy to run, and it does help clean up old and duplicated files on your hard drive, desktop, and removeable media. You have several options to choose from when using the various features; for example, you can delete files, move files to the trash, place files in "storage," and choose to ignore files from any future searches. I have found and deleted many duplicated files on my hard drive by using this application.

Aladdin includes an iSupport feature with a pull-down menu for software registration, check for updates, product support, feedback and comments, their download center, email lists, and homepage. There is a push for Aladdin Technical Support available as a pull-down from the Help menu. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mucho Cool
VPC 3.0 is a very cool and extremely easy to use product. If you're like me and split your time between Macs and PCs it is invaluable. Sure- your Mac does everything a PC does, just better, but sometimes you need to use the Win version of Outlook or use a program that is Win only- This is the way to do it.

I run VPC on my iMac DV- it was so simple to set up I was shocked. In the Win2000 environment my DSL connection is recognized, as is my Zip drive. Folders and files are easy to share and all in all speed is not too bad. There is some funkiness with things like 3-button mice, my trackball isn't supported and display settings can get a little wierd, but overall it makes using Win2000 easy. This is the real way to run a windows machine (now if I just had a MP G4)

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Function
While this installation required some tweaking of my extensions and control panels with Extensions Manager, once I eliminated most of the Microsoft exts into the disabled category, this Windows 2000 emulation worked flawlessly on my G3 400mhz Blue & White Tower. It was faster than the native W2000 on the powersystem I use at work!

Great product if you need to run work programs at home on your preferred MAC platform. ... Read more

68. StuffIt Deluxe 6.0

Amazon.com Review

StuffIt has been an invaluable application for Mac users since the daysof floppy disks, providing a clean and reliable way for us to compress our datainto the smallest files possible. Over the years the freeware StuffIt Expanderhas made unpacking downloaded files easy for everyone, and the popular sharewareDropStuff has let us prepare our own documents for transmission via e-mail. Butit's the Deluxe version of StuffIt that's always carried the real power.

It should come as no surprise that this release of Aladdin's flagship softwarecontinues to handle just about any compression format under the sun. Far frombeing a Mac-only translator, StuffIt Deluxe can create and decode archives instandard Unix and Windows formats as well. And, if you want to send someone afile but aren't sure if they have StuffIt Expander installed, just mail it theirway in StuffIt's Mac or Windows self-expanding format.

Although we think that the StuffIt Deluxe application (featuring an updatedclean interface) is fantastic in and of itself, the extra goodies are whatreally make the Deluxe version worth the purchase. With Deluxe's seamless TrueFinder Integration, you can browse and modify archives right on your desktopwithout unpacking them first, immediately archive folders or files by simplyrenaming them with a .sit or .zip extension, and directly manipulate documentswith the finder-level Magic and Contextual Menus. New to these integrated menusis Stuff & Mail, which compresses a file and then launches your e-mail clientwith the archive already attached to a new message. ArchiveSearch can search forfiles within archives, and of course StuffIt Expander, DropStuff, and DropZipare included to handle your drag-and-drop compression needs.

Also new is the notion of a ReturnReceipt, an e-mail confirmation that theperson you sent the file to has opened it. It's a neat idea, but there's noguarantee that you'll get the message; the archive will ask the recipient ifit's OK first, launch their e-mail client, and rely on them to send the note, which strikes us as being too unwieldy to have a high success rate.

This release leaves compatibility for older (pre-PowerPC) Macs behind, but witha wide-ranging feature set and Mac OS X compatibility (although OS X won'tsupport True Finder Integration), Aladdin Systems has once again managed tocram--or stuff--an awful lot into a utility every Mac user should own. --JackGardiner ... Amazon.com Review

Why put your valuable data at risk when virus protection is as simple as a single mouse click? Virex 6.0 offers comprehensive, hassle-free protection with a minimum of work. The software's initial examination of the hard drive requires a little patience, as Virex takes its time to painstakingly examine every archive and file. After this first pass, however, the SpeedScan feature kicks in and ensures that subsequent scans fly past.

Once installed, Virex automatically checks every file that's downloaded to make sure it's safe. To the program's credit, these background scans are completely invisible to the user and don't noticeably impact performance. Further scans can be scheduled or triggered by hot keys, but should you want Virex to do a custom scan of the software, it's never out of reach. A Drop Scan allows you to drag and drop any file or folder you want searched. Control-click (in Mac OS 8 or better) lets you access the appropriate plug-ins, and the Control Strip puts key Virex functions just a mouse click away.

The unique Snapshot feature lets you keep a record of a healthy drive. This record can tip you off to previously undocumented virulent activity. If a new virus does crop up, one click on eUpdate swiftly downloads and installs the necessary fix. --Jack Gardiner ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't support USB Devices
I was really excited when I got this product, because I thought in addition to testing it would allow me to use my older scanner that is not supported by Windows XP. So I installed in and then installed Win98 on a Virtual PC. After a lot of screwing around trying to get the thing to work, I found this on an FAQ at the Connectix website:

"... USB devices that require the installation of their own USB drivers (Zip disks, scanners, etc.) are not recognized by Virtual PC."

Which pretty much makes this product worthless for one of my intended uses. With all the printers, scanners and other devices that connect via USB this seems like a HUGE flaw in their product. If you want USB support, try VMWare Workstation

5-0 out of 5 stars simply amazing!!
This software is sort of like TiVo - no one really gets it until they try it out, then they're hooked. Virtual PC basically lets you run multiple PCs (with almost any OS) in multiple windows on one PC. As far as each of the "guest" PCs know, they have their own dedicated hardware.

This virtualization gives you some neat control of the disk images (ie, what the virtual PC thinks its disk is). The disk images of the virtual machines are just files on your PC's harddrive. You can just copy then and you end up with two identical machines! There's also an option to have any harddrive changes written to an undo file, so if in a session something goes wrong (Ex, "format c:"), you can revert to the previous state of the machine with the click of a button.

I first used virtual PC to test out a change to the Windows 2000 login process. I didn't want to try changing the way the login worked on my real PC for fear of breaking it and being unable to get back in. I figured if I broke it on a virtual PC, I'd just click the 'undo harddrive changes' and be right back where I was!

Virtual PC is incredibly stable - there have been no crashes or major bugs ever since I started using it. The UI is simple and quite straightforward. I was able to get my first virtual PC up and running without browsing through manuals or help files.

Virtual PC is truly amazing. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who has more than one PC around you, or even someone who just wants to play a little! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Now's your chance! Two for less than the price of one!
Connectix is offering a limited time free (minimal cost for downloading or getting a mailed copy) upgrade from Virtual PC 5 to Virtual PC 6 on their website to recent (like now) purchasers of version 5.

Without this deal, version 6 costs MUCH more, even for just the upgrade.

From the reviews I've been reading of VPC 6, it solves most of the OSX problems of version 5, especially the speed. So it you are like me, and have been putting off upgrading because of the flaws in version 5, now's the chance to go for it. I just bought VPC 5 here to upgrade from it on the website, saving a bundle in the process.
Read the reviews, check the Connectix website for details, and make your choice. Don't wait too long. You have to have version 5 to upgrade to version 6. Buy it now and get two upgrades for less than the price of one!

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother to upgrade
I upgraded from VPC 3.0 hoping the upgrade would get me better performance, and I'd be able to migrate to OS X. I have a Blue & White G3/300 MHz/256 MB RAM.

VPC 5.0 barely runs under OS X, although to Connectix's credit, they recommend 350 MHz+. Perhaps if I had a faster CPU and more memory, things might be better. For now though, it looks like running VPC in OS X is out. In OS 9, I find the older version runs faster in all aspects.

Both of my objectives (OS X migration and better performance) were not met. If you have an older G3 like me, don't bother to upgrade. It's a step in the wrong direction.

3-0 out of 5 stars Virtually a PC
I do not want to purchase a PC, ever. Thanks to VPC, I don't have to. I have not had the opportunity to try this with OS X yet, but under OS 9 it works well, albeit slowly (as others have mentioned.) I have no problems integrating with a mostly PC & Unix network and I am able to run the programs my company forces me to run, which have no Mac version or an incompatible Mac version. The ability to define multiple PCs at different OS levels is a definite plus.
If you want to run PC games, you are going to need a very fast Mac (how about a new dual 1GHz G4.) The graphics rendering is obviously much much slower in VPC. Still, it runs every business application I've needed, flawlessly. And I can show the PC-bigots at the office that Macs rule!

2-0 out of 5 stars Works as advertised, but very SLOW...
This is an amazing product in what it is able to do. Unfortunately the OSX version is too slow to really be usable for any real work. I'm running on a G4/867Mhz and don't have near the performance I did in OS9. Hopefully version 5.1 will be faster...

3-0 out of 5 stars Dependable, but SLOW....
This is a superior company that delivers wonderful cross-format / emulation work. Thank God they are there, otherwise my PC programs and PS 1 disks would be unusable on my Mac. Without Connectix I'd be a PC-er not a Mac person. That said...

Compared to version 4, this program is very slow. Also, it thinks the only available network is through my modem. How about my ethernet connect to my PC and other 2 Macs? Maybe configure the modem connection as a COM port, and Ethernet as the network?

But if you just got OS X, and have to bit the bullet and get this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Much better than 5.
I decided to upgrade to Virtual PC 6. I heard good things and bad things. So, to figure out I had to install it myself. I immediately noticed a huge speed increase when running Windows XP. Many apps were actually usable. With CPUs becoming faster, Virtual PC will be a pleasure to use. You can't play games that use a lot of 3D graphics, but simple games are somewhat playable, even games like SimCity 3000. If you want to run Windows apps on a Mac, get the new version.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just buy this and add windows later
If you already own a copy of windows, there is no need to buy an additional license. Just buy this and install windows on top of it. It works perfectly (see the Connectix Corp webpage). Its the same product as the Virtual PC with the OS packs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars .Mac for Mac
I have been a .Mac member since its inception. To fully appreciate the benefits, you really need a high-speed internet connection (DSL or Cable.)
Benefit: An email account with a 15 MB storage limit. (with a mac.com domain name.) You can access mail by using either a web browser (at any location with Internet access) or through any POP-3 mail application (such as Apple's own mail application, Eudora or Entourage.) You can purchase additional email storage space and additional email accounts for other members of your family.
Benefit: Your own private iDisk. iDisk is an online disk drive. Initially, you start with 100 MB of iDisk storage. (If 100 MB is not enough, you can purchase additional space.) iDisk will allow you to backup your important data or share photos or other legally obtained data. You decide what data is public and what remains private. You can build web pages and publish them, because .Mac also acts as a web hosting service.
Benefit: Software downloads; some full applications, some demos - all conveniently accessed from your iDisk (or conventional download, if you prefer.)
Benefit: .Mac also offers a number of discounts.
Other bebefits include an online calendar, data synchronization among multiple computers, online technical support, online tutorials, in the Learning Center and Virex antivirus software and its frequently updated virus definitions.
.Mac is definitely worthwhile. The only thing you really need to decide for yourself, "is it worth the price of admission?" My answer is a hearty "YES!"

5-0 out of 5 stars .Mac Keeps Getting Better
As an early adopter to Apple's new .Mac service, I was mildly impressed. Certainly, the e-mail service had some issues in 2003, but overall, things were good.

Today, however, in 2004, .Mac has become much more useful, stable, and fast. The new design of www.mac.com is both speedy and efficient; my e-mail works flawlessly. There are also more tools to use, such as Homepage and iCard additions. More importantly, being a .Mac subscriber now pays dividends in the form of free software, discounts, and more. I've received at least 2 programs free from .Mac that I use daily.

All around, a great choice!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, but apple should make it cheaper outside the US.
Wonderful service and software. I think I costs around $ 120~130 in Japan and that should be made cheaper as well. ... Read more
