Amazon.com Review

Ever wish you could eat lunch, file papers, and send an e-mail all atthe same time? Well, ViaVoice for Macintosh 2.0, Enhanced Edition, offersseveral new features that allow you to free your hands so the rest can follow.

Most impressive is Direct Dictation, which allows users to dictate text directlyinto AppleWorks, Microsoft Windows, Outlook Express, or Internet Explorer. Justplug the microphone into the USB port on your Mac, put on the headphones, andadjust the SpeakPad so that it's about an inch from your mouth. Tell ViaVoicewhat application to choose, and start dictating. Over time, the system will getbetter at recognizing your voice, and dictation response time will shorten. TheEnhanced Edition has a 64,000 word vocabulary, and features specializedvocabularies for users who work in computers, business and finance, "chatter'sjargon," and cuisine.

To use the Internet, just say, "Surf the Web," and then tell ViaVoice whatbookmarked site you'd like to go to. The user interface is consistent with theMac Human Interface Guidelines. Corrections can be made with your voice--nokeyboard strokes are necessary--and, if you need the system's attention for acommand, pause and say, "Computer."

While it's still available only in English, ViaVoice for Macintosh is a greatcommunication tool for people who either don't like to type, don't know how totype, or could use an extra hand. --Dana Van Nest ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good product, but updates are a must
This is a good product overall and works well for me now that it is installed. (Perhaps it is just my "clean Midwest accent".) The manual states that the software does not support G3 upgrade cards, but my PowerLogix card works fine with the software so far.

Cons: Lots of little problems requiring update and system tweaking.

I found that updates proved critical for the software to load and work properly on my machine. After purchase, go to the IBM website for the product (see info included with the software) to request the latest update CD. This is a reason to be cautious about buying an opened box version of this (on eBay, for instance): You will need a unique support code from the back of the manual to request the update CD or to get technical help. The update is important if you wish to use the program with Word 2001.

If you have problems installing, go to the IBM website for info and updates as there are strange little problems with the product, like having to reset your system time zone to New York in order to install. (?) This is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5. These problems should have been taken care of in the testing stage and I found them quite annoying to take care of in order to install the program. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good purchase
A good suite of useful utilities. I must say though that the documentation is a bit lacking, but I rarely use manuals anyway.;) so it's not that big of an issue. All the programs worked without a hitch.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE MAC ESSENTIALS
If you have a MAC and are looking for a utilites bundle, this is the one. If you are looking to regain some disk space Chaos Master is great! Go slow the fist time through though; it's easy to remove needed items. If in doubt double check, as you can have several files or folders with the same name in different apps. As always you should have anything important backed up first (read the instructions - often handy). I cleaned out 81.67 MB my first time. All the applications in this package are easy to set up and use. I bought it for 3 of the seven (Chaos master, Disk Warrior, and Conflict Catcher), the others are PURE BONUS; the three I wanted would have cost more individually than all seven in this bundle. I'm no wizard with computers, and need all the help I can get with solving / resolving problems that arise from time to time, these tools make it easy to do. Simple and effective software makes using it a pleasure. You will not be dissapointed. ... Read more

ViaVoice for Windows Personal Edition is voice-recognition software designed to be easy to use for beginners. After the setup assistant trains ViaVoice to analyze your voice, you can start using the included headset microphone to speak to your computer instead of typing. ViaVoice starts with a 160,000-word vocabulary that you can build on by adding new words as you use them. You can dictate directly into Microsoft Word 97 and 2000,easily creating e-mail, letters, reports, and other documents.

Features include the ability to analyze your voice, leading to greater accuracy. SpeakPad, a speech-enabled word processor, is included with ViaVoice. Natural Commands make working with Word easier as you use everyday language rather than "computer speak" to command functions within this popular word processor. You can teach ViaVoice new words for greater accuracy when you use special words, terms, nicknames, acronyms, pet phrases, addresses, and idioms. And your voice will become the easiest way for you to quickly navigate basic Web commands within selected browsers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Relief for Carpal Tunnel Sufferer!
I purchsed this software to transcribe tapes, and it has really given me some much needed relief from heavy typing. I'm able to wear both the headphones for the transcriber and for via voice, and I just dictate what I'm hearing from the transcribed tape! The easiest way to dictate, I found, is directly through the pad, and just cut and paste into word. Also, regardless of how poor you think your oratory skills are, speaking in your natural tone of voice helps the software to "learn" your voice pattern much quicker. I have found that even when I stumble over words that I use all the time, if I just do the voice analyzer after every session, it becomes more and more accurate. For a girl with a southern twang and drawl, that saying a lot! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Painfully slow
I installed it on my 12" powerbook (G4 867 w/640m) running panther. Installation was slow but painless. I bought it because I needed to access my company's site which uses Citrix for webmail & MS office apps. Citrix doesn't work on the Mac browser, ie or safari. Well, it doesn't work in Virtual PC either. I tried to allocate more memory, close all other Mac apps, started VPC from a clean boot-up & nothing. It would time-out, applets wouldn't start... all from just trying to run through ie. I'm disappointed. BTW, under "System" in the control panal in VPC/WinXP, I was runing a 686 540m processor. It seemed more like a 386 runing at 100mh.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too slow
Although I don't have the most current Macintosh, I do have a dual processor 500 mhz G4. I found that VPC ran far too slow to make it useful. I removed the software from my computer and purchased a laptop windows pc which worked very well. I would use caution in buying this product if you are expecting it to work quickly.

1-0 out of 5 stars Be careful of what you wish for!
My Windows laptop is going on the blink--has trouble powering up. I figured, it was time to get a new computer. I decided to go Mac and bought a new OS X mac -- no regrets on going Mac. I also bought this software as there are a couple of Windows programs that I need to run which do not have a Mac version. After about 10 tries, I was finally able to install the software. But when I tried to install applications (via Control Panel --> Add programs), all I got was a busy hour glass then cursor..no program install. When I tried to view the Win XP tutorial, my computer froze and I had to turn off the power switch of my Mac. I then uninstalled the Virtual PC 6 software. It would have been much better to have just used the money for this program for a used PC for the programs I still need to run. Not worth the time and aggravation. Be careful what you wish for.

3-0 out of 5 stars Works
Need to run Windows software on a Mac? Then buy Virtual PC. The software runs in 9 and X. Not all software will run "smoothly". If you need to run a small application, then Virtual PC is fine, but if you want to run something that is CPU intensive, like a game or anything that uses a lot of graphics then Virtual PC isn't the right way to go. In this case, buy or build a PC. I've had to run numerical analysis applications on Windows, so I tried Virtual PC. It was so sluggish, I couldn't get any work done. I had to resort to building a PC.

1-0 out of 5 stars Crashes alot and painfully slow
I've owned two copies of virtual pc and there have been no improvements despite connectix's claims of a better program. The only improvements I've seen are the improvements to the windows operating system. I have a G4 power mac 788mhz processor with 80gb of HD and over 1000 MB of RAM. The virtual pc causes the entire computer to shut down if I run two or more browser windows at the same time. I bought this program so I can run windows based software when there isn't a mac version available, but the hassles far outweigh the benefits and it will be to my advantage to just buy a pc and use it along with the mac. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Lifesaver
My G4 has been beautifully stable but software conflicts brought it to its knees. It is terrifying when your hard drive disappears and the disk utility repair functions are useless. If you see the warning, "overlapping extent allocation", breathe easier...DiskWarrior handles it. Before you call an expert (who over the phone suggested my drive had died) try DiskWarrior. Within 30 minutes, I had my computer back.

5-0 out of 5 stars dental floss for your Macintosh
Diskwarrior is an essential utility for Mac OS X. I don't even wait til applications start quitting unexpectedly to use Diskwarrior. I even leave my Diskwarrior CD in the CD drive. I do a restart with the Diskwarrior CD and let it do it's thing to keep the directories in tip top shape as I start my day. After awhile, this becomes second nature..like brushing your teeth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works Great (and a manual is barely required)
I had some 30 overlapped files (thanks to MSN) on my 10.2 OS G4. The most recent Techtool 4 couldn't do a thing. And the recommendations I saw on the net to run older versions of First Aid didn't work either. My computer was killing itself due to all these files sharing the same space.

DiskWarrior worked. Period.

A few caveats, however.

The PDF manual states quite clearly that you should first run DiskWarrior directly from the CD ROM before doing other things - such as installing the program on your own hard drive. It would have been nice to have that in writing.

The running of the program is simple and consists of, I believe, two mouse clicks. What manual do you need to do that? The program does what it does and it requires very few acts on the part of the user. But still, a printed manual would have been good. A mere 25 page leaflet would have been more than sufficient. Seems like this wouldn't add too much to the production cost of the software.

The big drawback here is time. DiskWarrior is sloooow. The start up takes several minutes and the maintenance itself, at least in my situation, took some five hours. I've never had a disk utility take so long to fix a problem. In any case, if you've got to fix your computer and you're using this software, don't plan on cheerily getting back to your computer in just a few minutes.

This is the second version of DiskWarrior I've owned. I had Vers. 1.0 which seemed to work, but it never saved my can. It always seemed that either Norton or Techtool could take care of almost any problem that DiskWarrior could. But not this time with OS X. I'm sure others have had differenct experiences, but this is still a good program. It's not going to fix all problems (no utility can), but it just might save your computer if it specifically has disk directory problems. Ultimately, you really do need to have at least two utilities. One of them is either Norton or Techtool. The other is DiskWarrior.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad docs, Bad discs, Bad experience
I wish I could be one of those people giving DiskWarrior 5 stars and saying "it saved my keester!" Unfortunately, my case is more "I'm still hosed...and now I'm out a hundred bucks!"

The first annoyance was that the DiskWarrior CD itself has been reproduced so cheaply (blue dye, like a 10-cent blank CDR for home burning use) that my G4 wouldn't recognize it. "Yeah, those Phillips superdrives are touchy," says tech support. Mind you, the drive has never rejected any OTHER disc I've tried.

And despite the hundred dollar price tag, there are no printed docs with the disc - just a PDF manual. You know, the kind you could read IF your computer was working. Of course, if it was working you wouldn't need DiskWarrior, would you?

In the PDF manual, it says you can make an additional startup disc (in this case to boot into OS 9 instead of the default OS X)...but it doesn't say HOW to do this, or even hint at it. It's entirely unintuitive, and I needed two phonecalls to tech support AND considerable knowledge of Macs to make such a disc. Not that it helped.

Maybe my problem is more than just a bad directory - but I don't think so. So far, DiskWarrior hasn't accomplished anything. I'd call tech support for help, but they keep only banker's hours (M-F and out the door by 5 central). Considering the markup on this disc-without-manual, you'd think they could afford decent tech support.

I've heard enough good things about DiskWarrior to think it must be doing something for somebody. But for me, the program is overpriced, under documented and a waste of time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Defective product
I bought it Diskwarrior 3.0 after reading several reviews, what they don't tell you is that 3.0 does not work with 10.3, and that after you get it, you will have to to call the company and pay an additional $20 for a working product (3.01). ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

The days of the simple CD-burning utility are seemingly over, and in thecase of Roxio's Toast 5 Titanium, it's a good thing. Lately we've been seeing CD-burning software that attempts to do everything but clean the kitchensink, with varying levels of success. In the case of Toast 5, the proverbialsink is spotless. Plenty of useful features like CD labeling, audio extraction, and data storage provide meat-and-potatoes satiation. The ability to remove hissand crackle from old LPs, and Toast's new OS X-influenced interface, is like thecherry on top of the dessert. And, of course, the bread-and-butter feature isToast's delicious burning options.

Roxio has kept the functionality of its drag-and-drop window intact from theprevious version, only now the design is reminiscent of a funky '50s dinerjukebox. The window is resizable, with simple buttons specifying the type of CDyou wish to burn. Click audio, data, copy, or other, and the button turns blue.Pop a blank CD-R into your drive, drag your files into the window, hit that bigred glowing record button in the corner, and you're cooking. Toast 5 continuesto support all major CD formats (like the previous version), and additionalformats including MP3, Mac/ISO hybrid, and VideoCD (playable on many DVDplayers). If that was all there is to this package, we'd be done right here, satisfied, and ready for a nap.

But, as we've mentioned, Roxio has loaded plenty of goodies onto the Toast 5CD-ROM, some of them frivolous and fattening, (isn't that what goodies are for?)some of them extremely useful sides. We particularly like iView Multimedia, which lets you catalog all your images, building a thumbnail library for easyorganization and retrieval. Also cool is CD Spin Doctor. Although we love ourvinyl here at Amazon.com, we've yet to see a device that will play records inthe car. CD Spin Doctor is a simple application that will digitize and create awaveform of your old LPs and cassettes, then let you add simple filters toimprove the audio. Remove hiss, clicks, and pops, and then burn the result toaudio CD.

There's plenty more on the table. Magic Mouse Discus is a basic labeling kit foryour CDs. Or you can export included templates to Freehand 9, AppleWorks, orQuark for more complex graphic design for your labels. New in Toast 5 is theuseful background burning capability, allowing you to work in other applicationswhile Toast is cooking up your discs. Make sure you have plenty of RAM for thisfunction. You even get folders filled with excellent digital photographs andfree music from popular groups and musicians.

We could go on listing savory features, yet will contain ourselves and simplyadmonish the Macintosh users among you: There's no reason not to buy Toast 5Titanium. It's a well-balanced, nutritious software program that will slake yourravenous hunger. --John Bosch ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Feeling Toasty
Toast is a really nice software package, although quirky at times. All the blame can't be placed on Toast. It, like so many other software titles, adds extensions to your Mac which can conflict with so many other extensions. Still, if your Mac is reasonably conflict free, you should be able to burn CDs or DVDs with fervor. The interface is clean, although not intuitive enough. (Click-and-hold a button for options is not an obvious method.) Toast does a very good job of burning Mac data, PC data and hybrid data CDs. Audio burning has also been improved in this version and, Toast can now recognize an audio image file to find track breaks. Previously only Jam was smart enough to recognize individual tracks in an audio image.
Some tips: Increase the memory allocation to the application. Give Toast a large buffer (64K). Try to avoid disk-at-once recording. DAO is good for "live" recordings, where you don't want an audible gap between tracks, but it taxes the system. If you can stand to have gaps between the tracks, track-at-once is more reliable. Use test mode to determine if your system is able to transfer data quickly enough for the speed you've requested for a burn. DAO and high-speed burning require data to be transferred at very high data rates. You may find you need to burn at a slower speed to achieve reliable burns. The "Toast CD Reader" extension is only needed if you intend to use your CD burner to read existing data or audio CDs. If you only want to burn CDs with your burner, you can safely run without the extension.
Background burning is a nice feature, but, if you are using the system for other tasks while burning, you are at risk for data underruns. Also, if your source is MP3 files, remember, MP3s must be converted before actually being written to your new CD. This too can add to the delays in data transfer. If you have the disk space, convert MP3 files to AIFF files before burning and use the AIFF files with Toast for more reliable results.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential tool for your Mac
I used my new iMac with superdrive for almost four months before I discovered this program. It took a bit of research for me to learn why I needed this program when OS X comes with its own built in CD/DVD burn software. If all you need to do is burn discs for backup and make music CDs and DVDs - you don't need Toast. However, if you want to make PC-compatible DVDs or CDs or want to burn DVD-R's that will play in a DVD player without using the iDVD application, then you need Toast.

Basically anything I have wanted to do with a CD/DVD burner, this sofware supported it. I had no problems with install and it has worked flawlessly since I installed it. The user interface is highly intutive and I have not had to crack open the help more than once. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars May be preferable to Toast 6
Apple's iTunes does fine by burning CD's, but Toast is handier for burning and copying non-musical files and documents. In fact, Toast 5, with the bundled Spin Doctor, is the only way to go if you're converting analog to digital and editing out "dead space" and other objectionable noise on the wave forms. Toast 6, on the other hand, includes an "improved" Spin Doctor (v. 2) that makes the aforesaid editing a laborious, imprecise, and impractical exercise. If you're planning to do manual editing of extended audio tracks--a radio broadcast, for example--forget about Toast 6. But now you have another messy problem: Toast 5 is not designed for OSX, and Roxio no longer offers as a download the necessary upgrade to make Spin Doctor, v. 1, compatible with OSX.

The solution? Go with Toast 5 and use it in OS9. Or switch to a shareware program like Sound Studio (more complicated and time-consuming than Spin Doctor). Or switch to a PC and pick up Cool Edit.

2-0 out of 5 stars ripped off
I bought toast 5 to burn my vinyl onto CD.
It came with SpinDoctor.
I was promised a FREE upgrade to OSX. When I upgraded my OS, I went to download the upgrade. Though Toast 5 could be upgraded, Spin Doctor was not available. After weeks of waiting, I got a response from Roxio saying that SpinDoctor was no longer available from them. I wrote several letters. They offered no remedy, just kept me waiting, but oh yes, they would be happy to SELL me a copy of Toast 6 with the new component that replaces SpinDoctor and is OSX compatible. Boy do I feel ripped off. Toast worked great, but I will never trust Roxio again. I certainly don't want to give them any more money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Mac users
Great overall for Macs. I got this software mainly due to the fact that iPhoto does not allow for multisession burning. Using this software allows me to achieve this although it not as easy as I originally thought (nothing is as easy as using Mac software - oh well). Also, I had some problems making cross-platform (Mac/PC) discs.
Additionally, the included Discus software is pretty good for making labels. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good but you should just own a PC
For a few bucks more you can get a real PC. And if you get Windows XP (Home or Professional) you have an OS that's more stable, more user-friendly and definitely far less snobbish than OS X. Aren't you sick of OS X hangs yet?

3-0 out of 5 stars Oh ish, a PC operating system on a Macintosh
I bought this software for a single purpose: To run Windows only web services on my Macintosh (Paltalk.com). I first loaded this software onto my G4 400 which is running Mac OS 9.21. Installation was a snap and I was quickly surfing the web through Explorer running on Windows 2000. I downloaded the PC only web software and fired it up. Here is where the problems were encountered. I have GB cable and was able to hear incoming audio just fine, but I was unable to get outgoing audio to work on my G4 desktop.

Undaunted, I loaded Virtual PC with Windows 2000 on my G4 PowerBook (667mhz) in the hopes that the additional processor speed would cure my recording woes. This machine has OS 10.2 on it, and again installation was a snap. Again I was surfing and downloading the Paltalk.com software and again, I couldn't get Windows to record my voice so that it could be understood. In other words, this software didn't fulfill my sole reason for purchasing it and $185.00 was foolishly spent just to get the Paltalk software to work on one of my Macs. Bummer.

Curiously, I've also had difficulties getting Virtual PC to be able to see the CD-ROM which makes me wonder how on earth you are supposed to load any software that doesn't come off the web into the Windows 2000 envirnment.

All in all, I could have bought a slow-yet serviceable-used PC for the price of this software. The bottom line: The evil empire is still just as evil even when loaded unto a Macintosh.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Mac 8500 w/ G3/11gb hard drives
After you try to load this software on a Mac 8500 w/G3 w/ 1 gb hard drive, you are told that the internal hard drive must be able to accept 1.5 gb.
Moving everything but the system file to attached 10gb drive still won't allow it to load. Also you learn that the G3 must run at 400mhz.
Sure would have been nice to have had this info before spending [$$$]. Never even got close to loading Windows2000!

4-0 out of 5 stars Which do you really desire?
Running a PC operating system is somewhat unusual on a Macintosh but is often needed. Macs do not deal with .exe and .com file extensions and for good reason. They are the ones that most often carry the virus which plagues the windows industry. Virtual PC for Mac with Win 2000 is good if you desire a network setup due to its compatability with Win NT 4.0.
This version (5) will run on both OS 9 and OS X but remember that it requires alot of RAM and still runs sluggish when compared to the Mac. If you have to be in the PC spectrum but want the ease of owning a Macintosh, then this is a good choice.

1-0 out of 5 stars VPC Yes, Win 2K version No!
You need to stay away from this version of VPC 5. The Win 2K OS does not come as a seperate disk. If the need ever arises to reinstall the OS, it looks like you will have to reinstall the complete VPC program. This could destroy any specific configurations to other operating systems you may have installed within VPC 5.

This issue has not been addressed by Connectix, the product developer. I have looked on their website and FAQ forums and I have not observed any fix for the reinstallation problem.

My suggestion is that you purchase the basic VPC 5 program without the OS and that you purchase Win 2K seperately. I would avoid purchasing the Connectix OS pack and just purchase the OS directly. I have installed 7 different OS from Linux 4.5 to 7.0, Win 95/98/SE, Win NT, MSDOS 5 and 6 and have not run into any problems during the installation. ... Read more
