If you can't drop everything and embark on a global tasting tour,Wines of the World Gold Edition may offer the next best thing. Aimed at userswho would like to cultivate their taste for fine wine, this program is packedwith information and multimedia goodies that will delight, educate, and informyou on the finer points of wine culture.

Using Wines of the World's maps, photographs, and extensive videotape footage, you can explore the winemaking universe down to its tiniest details. Topics suchas grapevine cultivation, winemaking, and the particular characteristics of thewine-producing regions of the world are all explored. What's more, the programhelps users educate themselves on the specific merits and weaknesses ofvintages. Using this program, you can learn to judge a wine's sugar content andrelative dryness or its compatibility with differing types of meals, or how toselect a wine you are likely to enjoy.

In the Gold Edition, many new vintages have been added to the wine review list, bringing the total to 40,000. It does not limit itself to the most expensivelabels, instead identifying the top wines in every price range. It has fullInternet compatibility and allows you to make up a personal database of favoredwines, with notes on everything you have tasted. Its search function andglossary are both simply designed and effective. The program also has somehumorous touches that enhance the pleasure inherent in its use.

This CD runs a simple program and is fully compatible with older PCs andMacs. As such, it lacks high-end Flash animations or any of the otherhigh-impact characteristics of newer adult educational software. What it has, instead, is a lot of information. Do you want to go on virtual tours of worldvineyards, or widen your appreciation of the wines served at your favoriterestaurants? Either way, Wines of the World Gold Edition will teach you theterminology, knowledge base, and fundamental skills to get you started down theroad to wine expertise. --Alyx Dellamonica ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Waste Your Money
I received this as a gift and upon trying to install it found that:

1. It will only install and run on Windows XP when set to run in Windows98/ME compatibility mode.

2. The title, although still for sale is no longer supported by the publisher and the online content (reviews) are no longer accessible. i.e. web links are broken.

3. While the database of older wines still works, the software is archaic and functions poorly.

The publisher of this software really needs to remove it from distribution, what a rip-off!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars no web based browsing
The Gold Edition Wines of the World came out of the package and loaded in like a dream after we changed the compatability to run on a top of the line operating system. The information that was loaded in was great and presented very slickly even without Shockwave. When it came time to set up the web browser is when things got interesting. Trying to get the browser to work took over and hour. When it finally did work the web site for the software was nonexistant. So we called the tech support 1-800 number to get a little help. Imagine our surprise to be directed to an adult phoneline. Oh Boy. So we called long distance to the company to get a little help. No luck everyone was out for the holidays and would not be back until the new year (wish my employer had this type of setup). Since this was a gift we ended up looking like total shmoes and took the gift back with promises to find something else. We have since decided to keep the software ourselves as we cannot return it. We currently are in contact with the company that produces it to find an amicable solution to get this software to work. Long and short of the review is that it has great infrormation, but poor web based browsing. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

If a quick jaunt to Russia is beyond your means, The HermitageMuseum: Saint Petersburg may be the next best thing. With it, users canexplore the 13-gallery museum located in the former residence of the czarsand learn about the historical context in which its classical artworkwas created.

The Hermitage Museum is more than a collection of electronicreproductions of great paintings and sculptures. The entire museum hasbeen re-created so that users can roam the rooms, seeing the creationsdisplayed as they are in real life. Clicking on a painting or statueprovides a close-up look at the work, and a virtual tour guide offersfacts about the artist, subject matter, and the piece itself. Some ofthe works come with detailed animations that break down their elements, providing an in-depth look at the techniques used in each piece'screation.

Clearly no computer program can compete with the experience of seeing abrilliant work of art at close range. However, The Hermitage Museum caneducate and inform art lovers, giving them an opportunity to study theSaint Petersburg collection however they choose: clicking from paintingto painting, prowling the virtual galleries, or taking a themed tour ofrelated works from different parts of the museum. This flexibility andease of use make it possible to delve into the Saint Petersburgcollection in a way that would be difficult to achieve through a singlemuseum visit. --Alyx Dellamonica ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A choice gift for art lovers
Victory or Montparnasse Multimedia keeps producing high-quality CDs. With the rapid progress in technology, the art CDs get better and better. The Hermitage Museum (1998) is somewhat similar in format and structure with Musee d'Orsay (1996) and is even more flexible in giving you a vivid virtual experience and appreciation of the Museum. The animated features, the music and the historical background are all excellent and give you a more in-depth understanding. It is interesting to listen to the history and vicissitudes of the Museum since 1682, with fires and three evacuations, including the one in 1941 before the 900 days' siege by the Nazis. You can even send a certain number of art pictures as postcards, e.g. Madonna Litta, by da Vinci, through the internet. I highly recommend this CD of one of the greatest museums to art lovers and any visitor of St. Petersburg and the Hermitage.

i never get sick of just strolling around in my hermitage's hallways and looking at any painting i choose in detail along with getting all the info i need just by clicking on any painting hangging on the wall. i love its beatifal selection of composers thats perfect for this virtual environment. i still to this day find beautiful paintings that ive missed which makes every visit to the hermitage a interesting one. myself being an artist i definately think this is a very helpful tool in giving you the freedom to sit and take in everything a real museum could give you without the guards and crowds of tourists. 4-0 out of 5 stars A great tool for school
I brought this item a copule of months ago and I cannot seem to live without it. One of the special features that I truly love is the "what if" scenarios in which that figures your grade when you tally all of the homework, quizzes, exams, etc.

It does take work on the users part getting all of the info on the system; but I figure you only have to do that just once a semester and mostly every day in regards to assignments and reminders for exams and essays. It is well worh the price for such a useful tool.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money like I did.
This package is really disappointing. The math programs are dismal. You click on buttons just to view a page from a math book. The Internet has interactive math websites that are far better. Unfortunately, I had to find that out after I spent my money. The earth and life sciences CD's are not too bad, but again the Internet has much to offer on these subjects for free. The history CD is a joke. The caveat here is to avoid buying these package deals and look for individual products.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great software - Lousy docs
This is a great program, some of the directions stink. My 13 year old nephew can't 'figure out' this program. Splendid! . This program is so good it will make him lazy and turn his brain to mush. His mother ordered this program for him from Amazon. He couldn't figure it out. His father posted that here. This is not a program for middle schoolers. Some of it is so advanced I (age 55) have trouble with it and I use Mathcad [made by the same folks] every day. If one had time to figure out all the things which Studyworks could do or had someone show them this would be GREAT WARE but whomever did the instructions should be shot. This is NOT warm and fuzzy Mac stuff I use a Mac but for this particular software I'd rather run the P.C. version. For advanced H.S. or Maths types or for 'Math Nerds' [like me] this is a 5 1/2 starer. But if you are not its a 1 at best.

Amazon.com Review

The myriad joys of journal writing are given an electronic shakeup for young users in My First Amazing Diary. This electronic diary uses pictures and sound files to ease new readers into the experience of writing--about themselves, their school experiences, their pets, or anything that comes to mind. Along the way, children can design goofy pictures of themselves, friends, and family members and personalize the diary with pictures and text that the computer can then read back to them.

Designed for new readers in the 5- to 9-year-old range, My First Amazing Diary is a straightforward program. Naturally, it invites users to write whatever comes to mind in the diary pages, just as they would in a paper-and-ink version. However, the multimedia design of the program encourages more taciturn diarists, too, drawing them out with simple questions about themselves, beloved pets, and preferred foods. Rather than facing a blank page or even feeling obliged to write reams about the topics provided, children are encouraged to pick their responses from a small but humorous assortment of pictures. The computer can then read the selections back to them, improving their vocabulary and reading skills. This low-key approach, with its emphasis on creating a writer-friendly experience, accustoms users to recording information about themselves without pressuring them to take the whole process too seriously.

While My First Amazing Diary offers new writers a safe and amusing place to record their first thoughts and memories, children will likely outgrow the program quickly as they become more dedicated writers. The database and activities are neither terribly extensive nor particularly varied. The small size of the diary pages, while obviously nonthreatening, will frustrate more prolific writers. The program interface is attractive but sometimes balky, and it has few customization options. After a taste of diary writing, most users will probably want to graduate--to a more advanced and flexible electronic diary, to a simple word processor, or perhaps even to an old-fashioned journal. Clearly a great introduction to the concept of journal writing, My First Amazing Diary will definitely require later follow-up. --Alyx Dellamonica ... Read more

The graphics and navigation aredelightfully cool, with an old-time feel that helps you forget the 21st-century technology you're using to browse the world of a hundred years ago.You can fiddle around for hours in the panoramic workshops, putting partstogether to see how they work, observing the inventors as they explain theirideas, and even conducting and analyzing experiments yourself. For anyone who ever had to sit through countless hours ofdriving instruction in a stuffy classroom, Driving School will seem, incomparison, like a thrilling day at an amusement park. With more than90 minutes of easy-to-follow video and animation, this dynamic, intricately designed program will leave you itching to hit the road, whether you're an old pro or a driving novice.

The most impressive part of Driving School is the program'sdesign--filled with animated graphics, rich colors, and rocking backgroundmusic, this software draws the user in and doesn't let go until allareas have been explored.Installing and starting the application is abreeze: simply pop in the CD-ROM and within seconds you're ready tolearn the secrets of the road. A handy options button lets you increasethe volume on the sound effects or shut them off completely if you'drather just read the text.

The program is divided into seven sections, including Requirements &Regulations; Signs, Lines & Signals; Before You Drive; and DrivingSafety. Each of these sections is broken into smaller subsections, which address issues in greater detail. For example, in the Signs,Lines & Signals section, you learn all about yellow lines versus whitelines, dotted lines versus solid lines, etc.You can choose to explorea section in greater detail if you wish, or simply go on to the nextpart if you want to spend more time on another area. Most sections endwith a quiz to help you master important information.

While most of the instruction is usually relevant and informative, occasionally the program seems to underestimate the user'sintelligence. For example, in the section about signaling, the programreminds us that if we use our hand to signal a turn, we should rememberto put our hand back on the steering wheel before actually making thatturn. Still, the overall tone of the program is appropriate for new andold drivers alike, and the material is both well taught and engaging.--Gisele Toueg ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Wow
I tried this out thinking that it would at least let me do some sort of driving to learn what its suppost to teach, but no, it's only videos. I watched 1 video, I dont even think the whole thing, and I looked around the whole thing and that was all there was. I took it out and never tried it again, and that was more exciting than this. This is pretty much just basic stuff.

1-0 out of 5 stars Extremly boring, and kind of disturbing.
I bought this program in that I thought it was going to be a informative and helpfull in my driving tecqnics, but in reality, it is boring and doesnt teach you anything that you cant learn from jumping in to you 1992 Ford Taurus and cruise around the yard. There was once a program, I forgot the title, that not only gave you the rules but alloed you to take control of the vehicle, I was not so lucky in buying this. This program also has a teriiable interface, and a guy that pops up at the start of every subject, he does not have a welcoming face and a very un-relaxing voice. Though it boasts none of the graphic bells and whistles of manymultimedia programs, Stories from the Warsaw Ghetto's sober approach to asensitive subject attaches faces and lives to an event most often discussed interms of ideologies and military strategies. The program details the experiencesof Jews in Warsaw from the invasion of Poland until the end of the war, when afew of the Warsaw Ghetto survivors resettled in Palestine.

The content is divided into three categories: Destinies, Tales, and Memories. Destinies follows nine people through the war, while Tales offersanother seven personal stories, including first-person testimonies narrated inthe speakers' original languages (with subtitles in English); Memorieschallenges users to consider the day-to-day decisions that ghetto inhabitantsfaced: should they behave as "good citizens," or should they take extraordinaryrisks in the face of certain death? Other features include maps of the ghettoduring each year of the war; an index of relevant names, events, and terms; anda timeline of wartime events leading to the plight of Warsaw Jews. Supplementingtextual information is the graphic content, which consists almost entirely ofblack-and-white still photographs from the war years, evoking the age ofnewsreels; some photos come from German film archives and should be viewedobjectively.

Stories from the Warsaw Ghetto takes just minutes to install and is easy tonavigate, even without the thorough instructions included with the program. Anideal choice for history buffs of all ages or an excellent independent activityfor high-school students studying World War II, this program sheds light on oneof history's lowest points. --Matt Kohut ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Two high school teachers
Both my husband and I have been using Teacher's Toolbox since '98. Its not that we don't want to change, but this program does so much. We currently HAVE to submit grades through Jackson's Grade Quick. We keep our grades on TT and just type them in at the end of the quarter on Grade Quick. TT has email links, seating charts, and attendance features that are great. If another program were better, we would switch, but that program hasn't come along!

4-0 out of 5 stars Tchrs Toolbox
The effort the program requires is more than offset by the time saved in grade calculation and weighting. Grades, attendance, flexible seating plans eliminates the use of a grde book. Be sure to make backups daily!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Best software I've used!
I love this grading software. It has more features and integrates them seamlessly. It's easy to read and easy to use. It not only does grades which you can weight, but clickable seating charts and attendance plus progress reports! Better than the clunky SchoolMaster my school is pushing!!

4-0 out of 5 stars My 4th grade teaching wife loves it
My wife asked me to help with the administration of her class so I aquired 3.0. Since she has little familiarity with software I studied it and trained her. Now she does a considerable amount of communication with parents using the system. Further, after getting over the learning curve, she is able to reduce much of the mundan repetitative work with TT. I like the simplicity of the system.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't pay more than you'd pay for a paperback.
First of all, it isn't a Mathematica package; it's a crippled version of Mathematica plus content organized as help files. If you're not a Mathematica user and don't intend to be, this will be a puzzling combination for you. If you ARE a Mathematica user, you'll be frustrated that you can't import the content and evaluate it in Mathematica; nor can you work in the Explorer, with standard functions and packages you're used to. Inevitably you'll want to EXPLORE something that these limitations makes impossible. Don't waste your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really quite good
There are two sides to this product. The first an electronic "book" on mathematics by Stan Wagon, and the second is the system in which that book is presented which is basically a "lite" version of the Mathematica package.

Stan Wagon writes probably the most interesting and useful books on using the Mathematica system. Here he has collected what amounts to a "best of" list of topics that will be enlightening to anyone interested in the study of mathematics.

Topics range from prime numbers, to calculus, to how to stack overhanging dominoes and many others.

The book is presented in Mathematica's help-browser format which allows you you navigate through the sections and all the expressions presented are "live" in that you can edit them and re-evaluate them using the built-in Mathematica system.

Besides the fascinating and well-presented material that makes up the primary content of this title, you you also get a somewhat limited version of Mathematica 4.0.2 using the same "notebook" interface as the full Mathematica product. This differs from the professional and student versions of Mathematica by only including a limeted number of the functions available in the full product, but the functions included include all the core features and a typical Mathematica user might go for quite a while before noticing that anything is missing. This version also lacks the irritating node-locked copy protection of the student version (though the license only permits installation on a single system, it is at least fully transferrable).

At about half the cost of the student version of Mathematica this package is more than worth its price for either the version of Mathematica it includes *or* Stan Wagon's excellent mathematical content.

Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars useful and fun
The 'flagship' product of Wolfram is Mathematica a large and very expensive program.

That program is built on the programming language 'Mathematica' a system where individual 'code words' are 'combined' into commands which can then be used to compute answers for some of the most baffling questions in the mathematical realm.

Mathematical Explorer incorporates most of the 'power' of that program but s much more 'user friendly' and offers a 'limited' set of graphical formatting options and graphical commands

The 'package' may be viewed in two parts.

There is a set of 'guided explorations'. Quite frankly I read these only to find out the 'built in' commands ... as ... Range[] ... that is built in ' shortcuts'

[Schamn's publishes a neat, cheap book called Mathematica which will bring you up to speed on the other commands used.]

The second part of this program is a format able, printable 'worksheet'. Here, by use of the 'Mathematica' language you can simply shred homework. It has been commented, only half in jest, that 'calculus' may not survive Mathematica.

Summing up: Not a 'toy' but a maths program which will overwhelm almost any mathematical task. While it does not produce 'step by step' answers there a very few things this package cannot do.

On the Mac side where I am there have not been many large maths programs which are not priced, 'the moon' and of those this is, by far, the best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mathematica - Lite, I suppose
I don't own, and have never used Mathematica, the big (expensive) product from Wolfram Research. I put this particular product on my Wish List cause it looked kind of interesting. Turns out, that I guess this is really a scaled down version of Mathematica. Easy to imagine they wanted to be able to get a lower-end product out of the door to lure folks up to the big one.

So, it's pretty cool. Calculated Pi up to 1000 decimal points or so, printed out a google so my kids could see it, etc.

The only really irksome thing about this product, is they have this section called "Demos", which seems to a set of links to notebooks that you can run only with "real" Mathematica. They have a little parenthetical note at the beginning of every notebook in the Demo section that says something to the effect "You may not be able to run the calculations in this Notebook with the custom version of Mathematica that you have". Um ... duh! Why do I want to see this? It's really teasing, since there is no way I can afford the big product. To be positive, I'll call it advertising. But for $[amount] or whatever, I'd prefer the advertising to be the slick flyers inserted in my product box only, not something in my face all the time.

Of course, I think I can probably figure out how to get rid of it also; Mathematica seems to be fairly extensible.

Also on the negative, the usability is lacking. The odd syntax I can deal with; the weird keystroking, and the lack of things I just expect to work (like scrolling a text area with a mouse wheel) are the kind of things that bug me to no end.

But, in the end, for me, a math- and computer-geek, this is a cool toy. ... Read more
