5-0 out of 5 stars I don't understand the criticisms of other reviewers.
The only thing I find really peculiar about the program is that the so-called random problem generator is something that simply links you to their website so you can do more exercises. I'm not fortunate enough to have seen the other math software packages but I am STUNNED at what I've seen so far. True, at this moment I've only gone up to chapter three but I find the software amazing and addictive. I love the mostly black background because it doesn't tire out the eyes like a white background does. I like the voice in the background because I'm sometimes too lazy to read or I have a hard time concentrating. You can even click on repeat to hear the explanation again. AND you can click on show example to see how the operations are done. The bottom line to me is whether YOU will want to use it or not. I guess it's like a movie or a book. People have different tastes. So far I haven't thrown it out. Had I put it aside after looking at it, I would not even rate this.

4-0 out of 5 stars helpful but frustrating
I love the graphics, animations, video, charts and the glossary complete with the symbols and formulas is very helpful. I saw only one problem and that is that the practice problems are too long and time consuming. A person who is made of less steel might drop out before they even get to Algebra. I am learning the concepts and am able to do most of the problems correctly but this is only because I use another math software program to compliment this one. If you can get math advantage at a good price by all means buy it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Software bugs - no support - lame
I'm running Windows XP with 1GB of RAM. When I try to run the product I get an error message that says, ""This program requires at least 3MB of free virtual memory to run." I can forgive mistakes made by software companies; however, I expect good support and fixes available ASAP. This is not the case. Companies that don't buck up on support or fix their bugs don't deserver your hard-earned dollars. Buy another math product from another company.

1-0 out of 5 stars A disapointing Math Software Program.
The design of this program leaves much to be desired. There is poor presentation of the content which is confusing, sometimes hard to comprehend, and makes many assumptions difficult for the neophyte to understand. Text being read gives little time to absorb math concepts. Provides sample problems with little or no explanation.
I suggedt a complete revamping of this software to accomadat all levels of math competency.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacking information
I am a sophmore college student who bought this software thinking it would give me a little help with home study. As soon as I started the program I couldn't find certain topics that were in my algebra book. The topics the software had were only summaries. This software should claim "along with pre-algebra, there is a brief introduction to algebra, pre-cal, calculus and trig." You would only know it was a short intro if you were or had already taken these classes. Otherwise you wouldn't know what you missing.
Don't be fooled. Know going into this you will not get much out of it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Old Technology, Mediocre Interactivity
The good thing: Lots of pictures.

The bad things:
All the pictures are of fairly low quality.
The CD ROM was built for Windows 3.1 so the interface is clunky.
(No nice Marcomedia director stuff here.)
The tone is for a junior high school student.
Random access is possible but not complete: Much of the information is in the walk through slide show with commentary.

Summary: Most worthwhile as an artifact of CD ROM media in it infancy. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Kaplan Writing & Vocabulary Essential Review presents grammar rules and writing instruction with an appealing, easy-to-use interface. The software includes practice tests to help students track progress and identify areas for further study, as well as brainstorming, outlining, glossary, and bibliography programs that will improve homework assignments and papers. Students will also benefit from tutorials and quizzes for each chapter, test-taking tips and strategies, context-sensitive help, and word-search and crossword puzzles that reinforce content.

Students can begin the program however they like. Some prefer to read the table of contents, choose a chapter, and begin their learning through reading and practice tests. Others may choose to explore various portions of the program, such as the tutorials, Tips and Strategies section, or the glossary. Students can also begin by taking a 25-question diagnostic test to determine mastery level. Upon completion of the test, Kaplan Essential Review provides a report of correct and incorrect answers. For each incorrect response, the program offers the correct answer and explains why it is correct.

From that point, students can decide how they would like to direct their learning: They can explore a subject in which they need improvement, study the tutorials provided, work on crossword puzzles covering the content, read through the glossary, or take practice tests. They can then retake the diagnostic test to compare results. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars It's like reading a boring textbook.
I'm terrible with my grammar, I was hoping this would help me improve it, however, I was dissapointed. First of all I had trouble using the software with windows XP, turns-out I needed to run it using Windows98/XP setting in order for it to work.

The software itself lacks visual aids. There are no pictures or videos, only texts. The music and sound effects are annoying, but you can turn it off. The software has a section called "now it's your turn," in which they ask you a bunch of questions, but provide no answers, to confirm your own. To sum it all up, it's basically a poorly writen E-Book, your better off buying a book on grammar.

Lighting fires and stringing wires... It's all in a day's work with InventorLabs Technology. This super-cool software package gives you awindow into the laboratories of Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, and James Watt, each of whom is kind enough to explain his work with electriclights, telephones, and steam engines--and let you do a little experimenting ofyour own.

Once you've absorbed a bit of information about what the inventorsare trying to do, you can manipulate the equipment and try new combinations, learning what works and what doesn't, and ultimately design your ownexperiments. This unique feature is a great asset for the creative learner;hours can whiz by as you try new combinations, take notes, and keep working onyour invention. With this program, kids and grownups can develop the samecritical reasoning skills that inventors and scientists use every day, ratherthan just passively reading about the process.

The interface and lab graphicsare gorgeous and easy to get lost in as you explore the labs, inventions, andtimelines that reveal the inventors' historical surroundings. The softwareitself is easy to install and doesn't drain system resources, making it greatfor older computers as well as this year's models. 1-0 out of 5 stars wouldn't work; encore didn't honor money-back guarantee
--> Stay away from all products from this company! <--

- wouldn't install on xp/pro (product box and Amazon state this works on XP, but website indicates product doesn't support this configuration)
- installs on mac os9, but works poorly (unreadable dark blue text on black background, sound is either too loud or too soft, fields not editable that should be, etc.)
- even worse, company (Encore) wouldn't honor 30-day money-back guarantee -- after attempting to return product in original box, etc. to Encore, I received a letter back stating I need to return product to place of original purchase (contrary to product documentation), and they didn't return product back to me to even be able to do this! [attempts to contact via phone didn't work -- on hold for 30+ min's]

1-0 out of 5 stars Very old design style - lame interactivity
This uses Macromedia Director software to accomplish it's animation . .which is all fine and well until you realize they are stuffing you into a tiny box . . .with black backgrounds and white text. Do they know nothing about usability?

I can't get very far into this, but throwing up some text on a small screen and reading it . .. is hardly dynamic.

Might help some . .but with my screen resolution at 1024x768 I'd actually like to use more than 1/4 of my screen to learn.

Lame, lame, lame.

2-0 out of 5 stars Would not install correctly
After installing the sound did not work on the computer (returning to a restore point fixed that). Their online support seems to indicate that this is a common problem. We run Windows XP with multiple users. I assume it couldn't handle that, at any rate I received many errors in path names when I tried to run it, although it did seem to come up. We are relatively computer astute, and maybe could have gone in and fiddled with things to make it work - but I don't want to. Its going back.

Another down-side for me is that it consists of single CD's for each level of math, all of which need to be installed separately. Plus it has to be run from CD, not from the hard disk which is a negative for us since we want to make it as easy as possible for our kids to use!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what we needed
We are very happy with this. It breaks down the problems for you when you want, gives some incentive for the children to succeed (games), gives detailed lessons, practise exercises and final exams. You can jump forward or rewind.

I wish it had a fast forward option, which would let you hear the lesson quickly, even though it would sound like the chipmunks.

Very good product! Well worth the cost.

5-0 out of 5 stars SUPER FUN AND EASY!!
As hard as this is to admit, but I bought this program for myself! I wanted to refresh my math skills and it certainly did the trick! My oldest son will get a lot of use out of it as well in a couple of years. For a person such as myself who has a hard time understanding concepts of mathematics, I thought that it explained most of them in clear and concise ways. Another great thing is that it comes with a voucher that you can send in with your receipt to receive another free "Encore" game. ... Read more

Complete U.S. History (1500-1895) combines three interactive, comprehensive software programs on the historical beginnings and growth of the U.S., from the founding of America to the Wild West experience. The software teaches history interactively through a multimedia platform, using movies, role-playing, historical photographs, and other primary source materials.

In Founding of America, experience the true colonial experience by role-playing four different characters with unique backgrounds and goals in life as Americans. The role-playing simulation covers American history from 1630 through 1820, and the decisions you make as your chosen character are based on real American historical challenges of the time period. You decide the fate of your character and how he or she responds to historical events, such as the Revolutionary War, the Boston Tea Party, and the War of 1812.

The Colonial period of American history comes to life with The Colonial America Encyclopedia. Filled with biographies, detailed descriptions about colonial life, maps, videos, audio narration, and primary source materials, every inch of colonial life is uncovered through an interactive platform. This in-depth software program follows the birth of America's original 13 colonies, through the Revolutionary War, and up to the formation of the Union. With the Wild West Encyclopedia, explore everything from Lewis and Clark's expedition to the Pacific Northwest to the battle at Alamo and the building of railroads. This title features a huge collection of historical photographs, video clips, and primary reference materials on the Wild West era. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars If you want MORE...make it yourself!
For me, this was a comprehensive and easy to use program. In my former school system, we had to use paper gradebooks. Fortunately, the school where i was stationed allowed teachers to use software packages like this one to input and print grade reports.

Teacher's Toolbox was used EXPRESSLY for calculating grades. It proved efficient and easily accessible throughout our school building. I would recommend this program to anyone who is techno-illiterate or just needing something to use instead of paper, pencil and calculator. If you need lesson plan writing and test-making software, use what is already available on the market. Don't expect Teacher's toolbox to do everything you might want.

So, if you need grade calculations, and nothing extravagant for gradebook and progress report production, Teacher's Toolbox is your tool to use.

1-0 out of 5 stars Teacher's Toolbox 4.0
Do not waste your money. The program is not user friendly and does not offer anything I can't find on any other program.

1-0 out of 5 stars AbleSoft Teacher's Toolbox review... for what it's worth
I installed the AbleSoft Teacher's Toolbox and while familiarizing myself with the menus and instructions, a colleague stopped me to recommend a different program he'd "test driven" already and liked.

Fine, I had no stake in the AbleSoft "Teacher's Toolbox" program yet, so I decided to remove the program from my computer before getting too deeply into it and to have a look at my cohort's suggested program first.

Well, damn! These AbleSoft people are clever devils... or maybe they're sinister bastards, who knows? Hard to guess about these things these days.

Turns out that there's no UNINSTALL file in their program. You're stuck with removing the damn thing bit by bit, byte by byte, file by file... and still there are hidden and residual traces of the program that won't go away. That's pretty irritating.

In short, I don't like people who write and market incomplete, inefficient, ineffective or "system capture" programs. These are either "bad boys" or fools. So even if this AbleSoft program has some useful functions, I wouldn't reward these scoundrels by buying their products. That's my opinion. You're free to form your own, of course. Good luck.

3-0 out of 5 stars Problems with Teacher's Toolbox 4.0
I have had Teacher's Toolbox 4.0 for a month now and it has greatly increased my organization and my efficiency in calculating (and apportioning) grades. However, I have several complaints: 1. On the "Lesson Planner" page, only three preps allowed. For many teachers, this just isn't realistic. Toolbox cannot be configured to accommodate more preps. 2. If the user decides to divide the marking period into sub-folders (quizzes, tests, homework), then it becomes impossible to view the assignments chronologically. The user can view all the grades by selecting the "Whole Semester" view, but then they must be sorted according to which sub-folder in which they are stored. 3. The print setup page is defaulted to print "portrait". The user can change this to print "landscape" (which must be done if there are more than ten or so assignments in a marking period), but this choice cannot be saved. Every time the user wishes to print a page, he or she must reconfigure the print setup. 4. In programs such as Word or Excel, several documents can be opened at once. The user can toggle between these documents by using "Window" at the top of the screen. In Toolbox, however, can only handle one. Before the user can open the grades for another class, the user must either save a class and then close it, or open multiple versions of Toolbox. If multiple documents could be opened with one program, then a comparison between classes could be done. 5. Once the user has opened a class, Toolbox is configured to open to the "whole year" view instead of the current marking period. Toolbox cannot be configured to open directly to the current grading period. To view the current marking period, the teacher must click on "Reveal tree", which shows a left-hand window similar to Windows Explorer, then select the branch of the tree he or she wishes to see, then toggle "reveal tree" off in order to use the whole screen. A "Next folder up" icon would be quite helpful, or a navigating through a window such as with the "open" or "save" dialogue boxes in Microsoft Word. 6. On the "Grades" page, there are thirteen options that can be selected to define each assignment. These options, displayed in a box at the top of each column, cannot be customized - all thirteen options must show, which takes up about half the vertical space on the computer screen. It would be nice to be able to display only what is needed and leave more space for the grades themselves, thus avoiding scrolling up and down to see the students' grades. 7. Toolbox is very gray. Color-coding would be nice on many of the functions. On the "Events" page, for example, lines designating the folders look identical to line designating individual assignments. On the "Grades" page, when a grade becomes "locked", the description box at the top could be color-coded. On the "Grades" page again, there could be an option to give different each student's line a separate tint, avoiding the possibility of entering grades onto the wrong line. (Another way to solve this problem would be to highlight the student's name as the user scrolls up and down a grade column. This is a standard in Excel). Given the above, I highly recommend teachers to find some software with which to do their grades (if you don't, you're living in the 1980's). You may however, wish to examine the competition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding product

Amazon.com Review

The artistic, detail-driven team that assembled this glorious CD-ROM of the Musee d'Orsay in Paris remembers what a visit to an inspirational art museum is supposed to be like. Linger in rooms for hours. Peer as close as you want to the crisply rendered artwork, learning a hefty chunk about the work's creator and its social context as you ogle its form and color. There's no noise or jostling from crowds, no closing time or additional fees for special exhibits. The experience of traveling through this CD-ROM is both so realistic (in its display of the galleries' art and interiors) and so enhanced (with mood-setting, period-correct music; helpful critiques and biographies; and the chance to blow up painting details) that you'll leave with a sense of wonderment and appreciation about art history that isn't always guaranteed when you pay visit to most real museums these days.

While there has been some controversy about the success of the museum's 1986 renovation of the Gare d'Orsay train station, there is no dispute over the splendors of the impressionist-centered collection housed there, and this CD-ROM does it full justice. The program's at-a-glance interface beautifully dissects and displays the artistic movements that led to and departed from impressionism, then entices you to explore each stylistic era deeply. Run your cursor over one of the dozen categories, and you'll see a sample of its style in the center window; click to enter the gallery itself, and you'll see all the paintings at once, with a concise description of the period set against powerful theme-setting music. (The "Symbolism" collection, for example, features a crisp sound clip of Debussy's La Mer.) The most famous face in the whole collection is Manet's tide-turning Olympia; there are also strong examples of the particular artistry of Ingres, Delacroix, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Monet, Cézanne, Rodin, van Gogh, Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec, and more. (Heads up, parents: Courbet's luminous, long-hidden The Origin of the World--a close-up of female genitalia--is displayed here, too.) The full collection depicts works from 1835-1920.

The chance to blow up areas of the painting--and thus alter your spatial relationship to the work--makes this a much more three-dimensional, museum-going experience than is possible with an art book or video. No matter how many reproductions you've seen of Monet's water lilies or van Gogh's portraits, you'll see them differently on this CD-ROM. --Jean Lenihan ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Art CD-ROM
Based on the reviews here, the Montparnasse/Victory museum CD-ROMS are the best in the art genre. They're good, but they could use some work.

The exciting "virtual visit" section of this program is pretty much a useless gimic. The screen size they give you is tiny, at least compared to my laptop's 14 inch screen. You can tell this program was created when computer screens were smaller.

Yes, you can walk (click, actually) around the Musee d'Orsay and zoom in on artwork, but everything is so small that the quality is terribly muddy when you do zoom in. Forget about seeing much of the work in the museum. Only the featured works, with narration, are worth zooming in on, since the designers included high quality, larger stills of these.

The program is redeemed by the more conventional methods of viewing the information. You can search by artist, title, or browse the provided set of collections. The narration of selected works and artist biographical information are not so enlightening, and you can probably find similar info. in an encyclopedia. It's sufficient, but not mind-blowing. They do get points for having professional-sounding voices do the narration.

Unfortunately, the designers don't include many examples of each artist's work. Manet, for example, has seven works represented, more than most of the artists. I understand they are presenting the collection in the museum, but for my money, I would have prefered more paintings taken from various museums rather than sticking to the single museum theme. If the designers did this to keep it a "virtual visit," they made a mistake, given the poor quality of the virtual tour. I just wish the content were a little greater.

I recommend this CD-ROM with some reservations. Unless you are an art historian, you will learn something and get to look at some great art . . . if you can get past the confusing, outdated interface.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rewarding and enjoyable virtual tours
How wonderful it is to be able to make a virtual visit, which is so informative and enjoyable. You have different choices in approaching such a treasure of art works from 1841 to the 20th century. You can always go to Summary and pick a certain period or movement. You can also follow chronology, or the index in alphabetical order. Always come back to Navigation and make your selection. All the works carry narrated comments. Many have "scale" (indicating the proportion of any part of the painting, "magnify" for seeing any part in greater details,"reviews" and the very interesting "animation" that relates the work of art to its background and other paintings. Some also have thematic narratives, such as "Ideal nudes and stripped bodies", "Outdoors", "Salons and exhibitions"... You can click "light" for sculptures and different areas will become brighter. (This function does not seem to be so useful.) A tabulated list of available features for each item, including the topics for "narratives" would be helpful. Use Visit to get a physical sense of the Museum or to prepare for actually visiting the Museum. The music selection is pleasing. Overall, this is a very rewarding CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Musee d'Orsay Virtual Tour
This virtual tour gives the user an idea of the art contained in the Musee d'Orsay. There are varieties of artists including Manet, Monet and Van Gogh. Some of the features included are commentaries on the works presented, an idea of the scale of the work (blissfully in metric), sometimes descriptions of the techniques employed by the various artists and occassionally commentaries by critics in the period of the artist.

The most dissappointing aspect was my difficulty in setting a Windows 98 operating system to work with this tour. The QTW.INI file required modifications not listed in the README file. In order to make this work on my computer, I had to change the line for OPTIMIZE to equal BMP. This was most frustating.

However, when I finally got this to work the results were fantastic. Perhaps the developers should make a DVD version as with the Louvre.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Visit Worth Taking...
A visit with the CD-ROM "Musee d'Orsay: Virtual Visit" is the next best thing to being at the museum itself. As you meander through the well-photographed, detail-laden rooms, a moving dot on a small floor plan to the side of the large photographed image allows you to keep your bearings. You may also chose to situate yourself in a room by manipulating the dot on the floorplan. Either way, a notation tells you the room number and name of the collection presented. Zooming in on a particular work gives you a closeup and spoken narration.

This CD-ROM has many features such as animations, timelines and artist biographies, which enable one to easily find and study a particular work, artist, genre, or time period. In addition, you can create your own album of favorites and add your own notes. As well, you can send email postcards of many of the works.

Overall, this CD-ROM is an excellent way to gain admittance to one of the most beautiful museums in Paris. ... Read more
