4-0 out of 5 stars Now's your chance! Two for less than the price of one!
Connectix is offering a limited time free (minimal cost for downloading or getting a mailed copy) upgrade from Virtual PC 5 to Virtual PC 6 on their website to recent (like now) purchasers of version 5.

Without this deal, version 6 costs MUCH more, even for just the upgrade.

From the reviews I've been reading of VPC 6, it solves most of the OSX problems of version 5, especially the speed. So it you are like me, and have been putting off upgrading because of the flaws in version 5, now's the chance to go for it. I just bought VPC 5 here to upgrade from it on the website, saving a bundle in the process.
Read the reviews, check the Connectix website for details, and make your choice. Don't wait too long. You have to have version 5 to upgrade to version 6. Buy it now and get two upgrades for less than the price of one!

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother to upgrade
I upgraded from VPC 3.0 hoping the upgrade would get me better performance, and I'd be able to migrate to OS X. I have a Blue & White G3/300 MHz/256 MB RAM.

VPC 5.0 barely runs under OS X, although to Connectix's credit, they recommend 350 MHz+. Perhaps if I had a faster CPU and more memory, things might be better. For now though, it looks like running VPC in OS X is out. In OS 9, I find the older version runs faster in all aspects.

Both of my objectives (OS X migration and better performance) were not met. If you have an older G3 like me, don't bother to upgrade. It's a step in the wrong direction.

3-0 out of 5 stars Virtually a PC
I do not want to purchase a PC, ever. Thanks to VPC, I don't have to. I have not had the opportunity to try this with OS X yet, but under OS 9 it works well, albeit slowly (as others have mentioned.) I have no problems integrating with a mostly PC & Unix network and I am able to run the programs my company forces me to run, which have no Mac version or an incompatible Mac version. The ability to define multiple PCs at different OS levels is a definite plus.
If you want to run PC games, you are going to need a very fast Mac (how about a new dual 1GHz G4.) The graphics rendering is obviously much much slower in VPC. Still, it runs every business application I've needed, flawlessly. And I can show the PC-bigots at the office that Macs rule!

2-0 out of 5 stars Works as advertised, but very SLOW...
This is an amazing product in what it is able to do. Unfortunately the OSX version is too slow to really be usable for any real work. I'm running on a G4/867Mhz and don't have near the performance I did in OS9. Hopefully version 5.1 will be faster...

3-0 out of 5 stars Dependable, but SLOW....
This is a superior company that delivers wonderful cross-format / emulation work. Thank God they are there, otherwise my PC programs and PS 1 disks would be unusable on my Mac. Without Connectix I'd be a PC-er not a Mac person. That said...

Compared to version 4, this program is very slow. Also, it thinks the only available network is through my modem. How about my ethernet connect to my PC and other 2 Macs? Maybe configure the modem connection as a COM port, and Ethernet as the network?

But if you just got OS X, and have to bit the bullet and get this. ... Read more

With Quickeys, the ability to customize and control your computer is virtually endless. Quickeys 5.0 performs keyboard shortcuts that automate virtually all of the computer tasks that you do each day. Included in this package is the Quickeys Plug-in Suite. This collection adds power and functionality to Quickeys 5.0. The suite includes the following plug-ins: Check Spelling, File Compression, Text Dispenser, and Decision Dialog. These new tools give you even more control over your Mac. Check the spelling in virtually any application with a single keystroke, or create a custom dictionary to use with all applications. Even in applications with built-in spell checking, you can utilize the words you have added to your personal dictionary. The Check Spelling plug-in runs with Quickeys 5.0 without significantly impacting your system performance, unlike separate spell-checking utilities, which require more memory and processing power. The File Compression plug-in is a quick and easy way for you to compress or expand files and folders with Aladdin's Stuffit Engine. The Text Dispenser eliminates the need to switch between applications when copying and pasting multiple text items. This tool eliminates the hassle and is perfect for database applications. Add multiple text items to a list called a "stack" and control whether items are to be removed from the top or bottom of the stack when pasting. Use Decision Dialog to work in a Quickeys sequence. This tool gives you the ability to conditionally branch based on user input. Create custom dialogs within a sequence and choose text to display, button names, and what action to take. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Quite Possibly the Best Retail Server Available
Though lacking the extreme customization of Linux, MacOS X Server 10.0 enables even novice users to set up and administrate networked and web servers with ease, while providing a power UNIX-based core. Based heavily on FreeBSD, OS X server provides industry standard Apache web server software, Samba file sharing, a mail server and every other feature found in UNIX operating systems without the need for the command line interface. Furthermore, if you are feeling adventurous, or feel the need to get under the hood, OS X provides the same command line shells as linux and Unix. Plus, Server ships with Quicktime streaming server and Apple WebObjects support.

Despite what the other review states, OS X Server runs well, even on older machines, providing file and print services which are equal to, if not faster than our OpenBSD on Intel systems, or our Sun SPARC file servers.

Still not perfect, OS X server is very well put together and continues to grow stronger with every revision.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Great...
I bought this hopping mac would come up with a good server program for there powerful computers. This wasnt the case. I was running this on a dual G4 800 Mhz with 512 MB of ram on a T3, and it seemed very sluggish to anyone who used it. It was easy to set up, but there were not many opptions to customize your server. If you want a much better server try Windows 2000 Server, which is 10x better than this. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Playing PC games on your Mac with Virtual PC
I recently purchased Virtual PC 5 with Windows 98 for my 600 MHz iMac. My only purpose for buying it was to play some of the awesome games designed for Windows. As I searched for info about Virtual PC's capability of playing these games, I found nothing that discouraged me from buying it. After I got it home I discovered my answer in the "Read Me" file, so here it is straight from the documentation...

"Virtual PC is not recommended as a gaming solution for the Mac. Virtual PC does not provide the resources many PC games require to run, such as hardware accelerated 3D video."

If you're considering it for this reason, don't waste your money like I did.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice product, but if you're using OS X wait for Virtual PC 6
Connectix Virtual PC is a good product at base, but release 5 for OS X is a "new" and weak version. I've used prior versions of VPC successfully under Mac OS 9 to run some of my old PC software and to access proprietary corporate web sites that are written for Windows only. The software installed very easily, it automatically picked up my Mac internet connection (via Airport and cable modem), and it ran the Windows software really well. A bonus is that when Windows crashes (as it always does, eventually), my Mac doesn't have to be rebooted -- I just relaunch Windows within VPC. That's better than running Windows on my old Dell machine.

However, the version 5.0 release on OS X is basically a new product, and it's EXTREMELY slow. Wait for 6.0 and see if the speed issue has been addressed. Connectix has announced version 6.0, but as of this date (Dec 20, 2002), it hasn't appeared on Amazon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rating me or a software
Mr. Joachim Klehe,
acting +30 years in hard- and software business, doesn't mean anything, when you need customer support after installing a programm which runs in tousands of macs.
I do not feel competent to judge a software rigidly, because I have no time and not sufficient practice with this programm, but if the Mac Authority MACWORLD gives it ***** it can't be so bad. But registering software, I can even give you some hints. - Hans J├╝rgen Ruppert

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing feat!
I'm typing this review on a Mac G4 running Windows '98 through Virtual PC V 5.

It gets better, though. I'm also running wireless networking on the Virtual PC via the Mac's AirPort network and Cable Modem. I can share my Internet connection, copy and paste between systems, and the Virtual PC sees my CD drive, external FireWire drive and USB peripherals--including my printer, which required no setup at all--with absolutely no problems whatsoever.

In addition, the Virtual PC effortlessly imported several thousand e-mails that I archived on my old Windows system.

This is an amazing feat of engineering. I now have Mac and Windows operating sytems on the same computer, and for those times when I need access to a PC, this will work quite well, thank you very much.

A previous reviewer mentioned a laundry list of problems, none of which I encountered. I can't speak to his experience, but mine was fantastic. I can't recommend this program highly enough.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Ready Yet!
I recently migrated to a fully loaded PowerBook w/maximum memory and the biggest disk available. The few Windows applications I needed to run could (I thought) be handled by the Virtual PC for Mac software. I've been in the technology business for 30+ years and know my way around both hardware and software. While the installation went well, and even after applying the required software update v5.01 from the Connectix web site, the software basically doesn't perform as advertised. Problems encountered: 1) The registration process failed so I was unable to establish a support account at the Connectix web site (no support account, can't alert Connectix of problems!); 2) The Windows Start menu never appeared (again, no support account, can't get help!); 3) the Virtual PC window arbitrarily changed size during the course of operation leaving the application useless; 4) My Apple USB mouse cursor disappeared intermittently during the short time I had a virtual pc running; and finally 5) the notorious Windows Blue Screen of Death actually appeared in my virtual pc window.

Thank goodness I was running OS X and my entire machine didn't get hosed. I will pursue a refund...for this "not ready for prime time" software application. A very disappointing experience. The software gets 1-star for intention and zero-stars for execution. ... Read more
