5-0 out of 5 stars saved our bacon this morning
We had a massive number worm attachments to email this morning. NAV killed them all, and stopped them from wrecking our server and network. Not bad for a virus that was only identified late last week. If you don't have this, or something like it, then maybe you live in one of those parts of the world where people sit around on rocking chairs with their doors unlocked. Look around you. Are you in amish country? No? Then get some industrial strength virus software. It's cheaper than wiping your server. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best OS out there. Period.
I used to hate Macs especially because of their OS. It was old, unstable and Mac users had to wait ages for updates which they had to pay to get.

Well, MacOS X, is by far the most complete and beautifully engineered OS out there (at least on a commercial basis). It is based on NeXT (using the Mach ker.nel) and BSD -- a feature which offers a lot to someone coming from a UNIX platform -- and clearly the best GUI out there.

Some may argue that it is not as polished as it could, but, hey, what is? Windows or Linux? Besides, Apple is releasing free *until now* revisions for download every couple of months and it has improved a lot since 10.0. (the current version at the time of writing is 10.1.2). Release 10.2 is rumoured to have great new features old Mac users requested as well as more language packs and a speedier Quartz. (the graphics engine)

I recommend this to anyone open-minded enough to leave windows behind him/her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Apple At Its Best
With the release of 10.1.3, Apple has really elevated the Macintosh platform to the next level. Internet, e-mail, digital photography, MP3 music, and even home movies are all easy to view, create, store, and enjoy. With the power of UNIX underlying the user friendly interface, many developers are now using this platform to develop applications using a variety of tools including Cocoa, Applescript, Objective C, and Java.

I use applications such as Microsoft Office, Quicken 2002, Palm HotSync, Photoshop, GoLive, and Watson everyday. No longer is it necessary to revert to "Classic" mode.

Now you can connect to WiFi (802.11b) networks and Bluetooth enabled devices. Internet setup is simple and multi-homing automatically ensures that you are connected if you switch between dial-up, ethernet, and wireless connections.

Security is also top-notch thanks to the UNIX core. OS 10.1.3 has a built in firewall that can be tweaked to your individual preference. If you enjoy serving web pages, this system has a built in implementation of Apache. You can add PHP, MySQL, and other tools to build an advanced web serving platform.

If you have a Macintosh and you do not have OS 10.1.3, you are not taking full advantage of your computer.

5-0 out of 5 stars OS X Reaches Maturity
I'm a small business owner and have hesitated upgrading to OS X from "Classic 9.x" until I felt that it would help me in my business, rather then create a lot of work in trying to debug things.

OS X 10.1 seems to have reached this level. I run it now constantly on my G4 Cube and it is THE most stable OS I have ever used (either from Apple or other MS or Unix-based systems). The system stays up 99.99+% of the time, running MS Entourage and some other Classic applications in the background, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

I even run our Windows-only QuickBooks Pro accounting software through Virtual PC's excellent emulation software, native on X! This is one giant step forward for computing needs at work or at home. Plugging in a digital camera through USB or Firewire works flawless and automatic. The interface is beautiful and intuitive and you can feel the power of the Unix engine underlying the software without having to know anything about it.

I just upgraded all our office iMacs and iBooks with memory (cheap these days!) and will network OS X exclusively in the near future.

2-0 out of 5 stars Watch out for USB driver problems and kernel panics
Six months into using OS -X started having Kernel panics (Apple's blue secreen of death). Not running non-Apple programs, multi-tasking, or running peculiar non-standard hardware (Logitech tracball, HP printer/scanner). 5 trips to the repair shop - new hard drive, new RAM, new system board, upgrade to 10.2.8; 4 phone calls to Apple "Support." Kernel panics returned. Lots of web searches - found lots of boards where people have the same experience, and found the only permanent solution was downgrading to OS9 or upgrading to OS 10.3. "Support" denies it's poor USB software.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love OS X, but be wary of the server version
my advice is to make sure you need it before you buy it, but if you know you need it, then buy it. How will you know? If you need it, you would already know that you do. If you don't know that you need server version, then you probably don't need it. Most day to day tasks are done by the normal version of the os in ways that are much simpler than the server tools. Now you do get a variety of nice things with the unlimited client, such as server managment systems, monitoring systems, etc., but if you are just doing a basic install without a complex networking or users/groups system, then you probably should try to do what you need to do with a 10.1 or 10.2 and see if you actually have to own the server. I would say the ideal application of a server install is for a medium to large lab install using netboot, where the actual cost of doing it via server will lower the TCO significantly. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars beats the old mac extension
I purchased Conflict Catcher to replace the existing extension that came with 9.1 because of problems with the software. It crashes, hogs some memory and has limited function compareable to the most colorful Conflict Catcher which has more function than a hard bound encyclopedia. Its function is apparent during the start up and you can adjust the icons to its smaller size to avoid less clutter on the desktop upon startup. You can make multiple sets of extensions to reduce the amount of existing extensions needed so the computer can run smoothly without slowing down. If there is conflict with a particular extension software, the Conflict catcher will alert you to it so you can make a decision to ignore the problem extension software entirely, or even better, to delete the offending extension to ensure a smooth ride to your desktop. ... Amazon.com Review

Nowadays we can buy and download our music off the Net and play it instantly on our computers, completely bypassing the CD. However, almost every computer in the world has a CD-ROM drive that can also play audio CDs, and many new computers are shipping with CD-RW burners. Plus, blank CDs are under a dollar each. So, if you want to take your downloaded music to go, you can simply convert it from the downloaded MP3 file to an AIFF or WAV file, and burn that to an audio CD-format disc.

Toast has been around for years and is the benchmark application for CD burning. It works with just about every CD-R and CD-RW burner from every manufacturer, including the new USB models, and it burns almost every format: audio CDs, Macintosh data CDs, PC data CDs, enhanced music and data CDs, hybrid CDs, video CDs, etc. Many users will use Toast 4 for archiving data, as an inexpensive means of delivering content to clients, or for burning short-run or prototype multimedia CD-ROMs. But a growing market for Toast is the music crowd, especially with the explosion of MP3 music on the Web. Adaptec's Toast 4 Deluxe is CD creation and burning software for a new generation, but not without some features for the legacy crowd that worships vinyl.

Version 4 now makes it easier than ever to burn music CDs by importing (without conversion) MP3 files directly and converting them on the fly as it writes them to a CD. Now you can mix and match your favorite tunes and burn your own "best of" audio mix. Toast also includes features for extracting music tracks from commercially available audio CDs, allowing you to duplicate (for your own purposes) any CD that you own, or mix and match tracks from your favorite CDs.

As if that weren't enough, Version 4 includes the necessary cabling (a stereo connector with a pair of RCA plugs on one end and a ministereo jack on the other) for connecting the microphone jack on your computer to the output jacks on your stereo, and the software to facilitate converting from an analog source like vinyl LPs directly to audio CDs. The software, called Spin Doctor, has features for controlling input levels, balancing, cleaning up the audio by using certain filters, and viewing the waveform of the audio for keeping an eye on levels. For anyone who needs to create any type of CD, Toast rocks. --Mike Caputo ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the easy way
This is the way it ought to be. Drag your audio file on Toast and you're burning an audio CD. The only improvement that could possibly be made would be the addition of crossfading ability. Otherwise, it'll practically do anything you want with simple drag & drop! Since it easily copies mp3 and complete compact discs, you now have the unbridled option of ripping off all the musicians you love so much. Computer nerds will also love the fact that it will burn data CDs, copy your hard drive, even create hybrid CD! You'll also be able to copy your favorite video games and programs on them, giving you the unbridled option of ripping off the software makers you love so much. Other than giving you the option to be a criminal, this software is absolutely the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read the manual!
Not only will this software do much morethan I need, it does it so simply that it defies logic! The one time I had difficulty (setting up the software to run my burner) I called Adaptec - yes, I waited on hold for a while, but they were gracious and assisted me in looking up the fix for my problem in the manual! Anyone who needs to call should read first! As for the website, well, I found it easy to navigate and find what I was looking for. I simply cannot believe that people cannot figure this program out the first time through - all they need is a bit of patience and twenty minutes to read the manual before setting up! I am Adaptec for life!

4-0 out of 5 stars Does the Job
Toast does a great job burning just about any kind of sound file you could want onto CDs. After mastering the program, it is a no brainer and very straightforward. Buy CD-Rs in bulk -- packs of ten will not be enough once you start burning fever! The excellent manual is delivered in pdf format which I found difficult to manage when learning the program, so I had to print big chunks out.

However, as another reviewer mentioned, Adaptec has TERRIBLE customer support, a worse web page, and they intentionally make it difficult (or impossible) to contact them.

So, be aware that this is a very fine progam and I think the only thing like it currently on the market. But if you need any help, call your mother.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR MAC CD BURNERS
This is by far the best cd burning program I have used. It takes care of everything Mp3, Disc copy, and is very easy to use. You can even hook up turntables & tape deck and convert that to CD format. And the cable to do it with is included. If you have a burner and dont have Toast 4 Deluxe, BUY IT!

1-0 out of 5 stars No Customer Support
Toast is a good program for burning CDs, but if you can't do it all yourself, watch out. The Adaptec customer service is terrible. Not only do they not have a toll free number, but I've been on hold over an hour and had no response. If you're a computer genius, enjoy. But if you'll have questions, it looks like you're on your own. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Once you get over the creepy experience of seeing a Windows desktop on the face of your lovely Mac (and hearing the Windows start-up chimes reverberating from your speakers), you might start to appreciate the benefits that a program like Virtual PC 4.0 has to offer. For those Mac users who need to occasionally access Windows 98, Virtual PC 4.0 supplies just the solution without making you invest in a new machine.

Virtual PC doesn't profess to offer lightning-fast speeds. Remember, you're running a second operating system, so don't expect even the mightiest G4 to keep up at its usual pace. However, we did note improvements in speed in most applications over the 3.0 version. Enough of a difference, in fact, to consider an upgrade if you're one of the many who've been frustrated by the sluggishness in the past. However, as before, Virtual PC is still not a good solution for playing PC games. Additionally, we tried watching two QuickTime movies over the Internet on both our Mac and in Virtual PC. While on our T1 line the Mac version was flawlessly gorgeous and buffered instantly while watching, trying to watch the QuickTime movie in Virtual PC was stuttered and clunky. And even when watching QuickTime movies that had been fully buffered first, the player still resorted to a slide show instead of smooth, streaming video.

One major change in this latest version is in memory allocation. Whereas in the 3.0 version you had to allocate memory to the Virtual PC application itself, in this version you allocate memory to each virtual "machine," which can be expanded and changed even while you're in the midst of using that machine. Additionally, drive images are now only as large as they need to be. That means that even if you create a drive image of 8 GB for your virtual machine, but the application is only using 2 GB, then the image will only be 2 GB--a great disk space saving feature.

The two most notable benefits of Virtual PC are the ability for Windows to use your Mac's existing Internet connection (there's no need to go through any further setup), and the outstanding USB support in this new version (you can access USB printers, scanners, and other peripherals easily). However, you should have OS 9.0.1 or later in order to take advantage of its enhanced USB support.

Another neat addition in this version is the ability to add even more operating systems to Virtual PC. That means that if you have a copy of, say, SuSE Linux lying around, you can install that on another drive image, and access it from Virtual PC. The only caveats are that you must supply the OS and that you're still limited by the amount of RAM you have. But how cool is that?

Though it might make you feel a little dirty having to visit the dark side every so often, the benefits of being able to switch back and forth between your Mac and Windows are quite substantial, and warrant a look at Virtual PC 4.0 with Windows 98. --Ara Jane Olufson ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One great Program!
Virtual PC 4.0 with Windows 98 is one helpful program. It allows you to access different programs that are only available for Windows machines. It doesn't emulate Windows, it emulates a Pentium processor on your computer, so if you want to upgrade to a different version of Windows at a later date, you will be able to. I really got this program for use with my Handspring Visor, since no one out there makes software to sync your address book and calendar over the internet for the Mac. I have used 2 different services thus far (Yahoo and MyPalm) and both of them have worked without a hitch. One thing everyone wants to know about Virtual PC though, is what about the games! I haven't really invested all too much money in that, but the ones that I have tried, have worked well enough (Grim Fandango and Close Combat series). If you decide to get this and want to run some games on it, let me caution you... first make sure the game does not require hardware acceleration as Virtual PC 4 will not access any 3D cards on your Mac. Secondly, check out the processor requirements. If a game requires a 500mhz Pentium, you are going to have one frustrating gaming session. The common rule of thumb is to take your Mac's processor speed and divide it by three (i.e. 466mhz mac = 155mhz Pentium). By following those simple hints, your gaming should be a good time! Overall, I wholeheartily recommend Virtual PC if your have no desire to get a full desktop PC and want to run a few Windows programs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Connectix has done a very good job with 4.0
If you need to run Windows apps on your mac, this is the way to go. I've run it under both 9.0.4 and 9.1 on 3 different machines and have had no problems. I've used Internet access through my Mac's DSL line, file sharing and printing in addition to running apps. You can boot multiple OS's (98. 95, Me) and the interface and speed is much improved from earlier versions. You can't play PC games on it, but for everything else, it's an excellent solution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
A think Virtual Pc is a great software! It let my kids play pc games on thier imacs. This software is easy to download and it is worth buying if you only have macs around your house. Its a heck of alot cheaper then buying a window computer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good Packaging, Poor Product
The hype on the outside of the box is exactly that - HYPE. The product crashed my G4, on both Mac OS 9.04 and 9.1, and was unstable. Talk about Beta - this product has it in spades!

1-0 out of 5 stars This is a piece of junk!
The advertising for this product is no doubt accurate. Certainly, it is much faster than 3.0, which was glacial in its response. It is now like running Windows on a 386, rather than an 8088 chip. It is easier to manipulate via Mac controls. The transfer of files between the two OS's is much simplier, a shared file located on the Apple Desktop. A very nice status monitor is located beneath the main screen that tells you about what the hardware is doing. It was actually a joy to use at first, until all the problems began to crop up.

This program is actually a beta form pushed quickly into the market in time for the Christmas season, however. It crashed my 9.0 OS using IMac more than 15 times completely enough to require a complete reboot from the power key, while using their default settings of memory, etc. It says that it supports USB, which my printer uses, but it also turns off the Chooser when it takes over, so, when I try to print out something the job actually gets as far as the printer spool in the computer, but it never would bridge the gap between the computer and the printer itself.

And, so, at the price that you pay for the thing, it is not something that anyone should try, in the least. All the little advertised improvements really work, it is just that nobody seemed to have tested it out before they put it out on the market. As such, please don't buy this software! ... Read more
