5-0 out of 5 stars What, me worry?
Until fairly recently, my internet access was by way of phone modem, and my e-mail software was, to put it mildly, archaic. Even worse, the dial-up service to which I had access required a toll call. Needless to say, my on-line time was spent, for the most part, in brief spurts: Get on; get what I need (mostly just e-mail); get off.

Given this "get on; get off" modus operandi, I didn't need to worry too much about people hacking into my computer (a Macintosh); the window of opportunity my machine presented to hackers was pretty small, to put it mildly. But I still managed to get Windoze-sourced virus attachments to e-mail I received. On the Mac, these manifested themselves as text files having a vbe extension, meaning that they would run under Visual Basic on Windoze machines. On a Mac, of course, no damage is done. (I was helped more than a little by Microsoft, which continues to cripple Visual Basic for the Mac, limiting it to just a macro programming language as part of the MS Office suite. I couldn't have run these programs if I had wanted to.) But, using a text editor, I at least had the opportunity to scan these Visual Basic programs, to see "what made them tick."

Then (fairly recently, as I wrote), I upgraded to a broadband (cable modem) internet connection. And, since my Mac of choice is a laptop, with ultra-low energy consumption and other similar benefits, I tend to leave it on all (well, at least MOST) of the time. So I thought it prudent to install some sort of protection against hackers (and against the possibility that someone might try to write Mac-specific viruses and worms, despite the fact that 95% of personal computers are NOT Macs). Enter Norton Internet Security for the Mac. This inexpensive "insurance" software contains two parts: a software "Personal Firewall" and Norton AntiVirus ("NAV"), the latest version of Norton's "SAM" (Symantic Antivirus for the Mac). Each module is flexible in the way it can be customized for one's personal use. (For example, NAV preferences can be set so that archived files are not scanned [once they are scanned initiallly for contamination], saving significant scanning time subsequently.)

I've now used Norton Internet Security for a few months, and am pleased to report that it does what it is advertised to do, unobtrusively and in the background. The Personal Firewall log tells me that, on average, there are upward of 50 or 60 daily attempts to "ping" my computer, all denied. (A fair percentage of these has been from my broadband service, but the service's lack of success at entry doesn't seem to negatively affect our relationship.) The NAV log tells me that, since installation, only one active Mac virus has been discovered and, of course, neutralized. And, not that it was ever a problem, but it seems as if the "stable as a rock" OS is even more stable, if that is possible.

Is there a downside? Well, I no longer see any of those Visual Basic attachments, so it's fair to say that my VB-for-the-Mac programming skills have never really left the starting block. But, then, neither have Microsoft's, so I'm not complaining.

An interesting aside: In preparing this review, I did a websearch on the "Alfred E. Newman" brief description at the top, wanting to make sure that it ended up being punctuated correctly. Among the search "hits" I found was one for a Peachpit Press book on internet security for the Macintosh, having precisely this title. My apologies to Peachpit Press. But, well, a good idea is STILL a good idea, irrespective of its originator.

Highly recommended for all Mac users.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Easy to Install
When I received this pkg. I was prepared to call my "computer literate" friend but decided to see how far I could proceed in installing this on my own. The directions were clear and everything went smoothly. Now, I'll not be accused of passing any viruses nor will I receive any! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product!
I teach Graphic Communications and Printing Technology at the Center for Arts & Technology in Phoenixville, PA. I am currently working on a presentation for the International Graphic Arts Education Association and will be featuring your product in my presentation. As more and more teachers in my building see what I'm capable of doing with your tool, I have no doubt that they too will be ordering your product quickly just like I recently did. I'm also helping one of my students develop an introductory level class on CD and it's been a great learning experience for both of us. He is learning just how difficult it can be to create a learning module for a beginning student and I'm finding out just how much he knows about his computer which is quite a bit I'm happy to say. ScreenRecord is a great advancement for hands-on education like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good but save your money
Okay maybe if your connection is slow or you don't have access to broadband you can buy this CD,but if not why bother?
OpenOffice.org is freely available online as is Firefox.
I use and love both so don't get me wrong here, but the price is a little too much but then again it goes to the developers.
Ooo is a great alternative to Microsoft Office and even Star Office. It does everything the same for free! I often do my homework and essays with Ooo Writer. And Firefox is what I am using to write this very review! It's one of the best Mozilla-based browsers besides the Mozilla Suite/Netscape 7 itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Open Office and FireFox, wonderful software, excellent value
Open Office reads and writes in MS Office 97/2000/XP formats for Word, Excel and PowerPoint and can export documents to PDF format.
One of the best advantages is inexpensive upgradability.I purchased Office 95 ($400+ dollars) in 1996.When Office 97 came out, my Office 95 software would not open office 97 formatted documents.I toughed it out till I purchased Office 2000 ($500+ dollars) now Office XP and 2003 have came out (do we see a pattern here)?I suspect that it will be much less expensive to buy a $30 upgrade to Open Office to read and writedocuments created by upcoming versions of Micro$oft Office.
FireFox: "ad ware" resistant, pop up blocker and tabbed browsing... love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great products, great price, great source!
Open Office and Firefox are two of the very best of their kind. Both give users the ability to work with the same files, websites and so on that they're used to, without the worries of bad macros, spyware, and other problems associated with the proprietary products these replace.Better yet, they're both faster, more powerful, and more up-to-date than those old dinosaurs.Perhaps best of all, these programs look and operate the same on Windows, Mac, Linux and other platforms, making it much easier if you or your family needs the flexibility.

The fact you can buy this set for a tiny fraction of the cost of just the Office suite it replaces is almost secondary to all the other features -- Open Office would be tough competition for Microsoft even if it cost the same as MS Office.

Linspire, the publisher of this collection, is highly respected for making open-source software widely accessible; if you like Open Office and Firefox, their Linspire Linux is among the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Open Source Packaged and Marketed as It Deserves
OpenOffice.org and Firefox are both fantastic products lacking one simple ingredient. Despite their technical merits, the marketing efforts for these products have not been impressive... until now.

With Oooff, that has all changed. The products are finally sold next to other respected name brands on store shelves and through online retailers, like Amazon.com. Oooff is expanding the distribution channel of these open source products. Oooff will expose computer users that pay large sums for Microsoft Office and use the vulnerable, dull and underpowered Internet Explorer to the powerful alternatives they didn't know existed. Without a doubt, making open source software accessible is the first step in restoring a healthy and competitive software industry.

Oooff is a great idea and contains excellent products. This is a good buy and will give you the comfort of knowing that by purchasing this product,OpenOffice.org and Firefox will have an even brighter future. Kudos to everyone at Linspire, and the developers for OpenOffice.org and Mozilla Firefox! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Windows and Linux
If you use Windows this is the way to go.Free web browser that more than 10 Million people worldwide have switched over to.None of the security problems that Internet Explorer has.Popups blocked out of the box without not extra software. The office side saves you over 200 dollars paying for Microsoft Office. And it is completely compatible with Office formatted documents and more.If you have a college student on a budget that needs a office suite then this is for them. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Crashes While Cleaning
I own the PC version of this software and I have been very satisfied with the quality of the PC version however, this MAC version repeatedly crashes while cleaning. Currently, (6-30-04) Webroot does not have an update that fixes this problem. I am sure that they will make a patch but as for right now I would not buy this product until the bugs are worked out. I would easily rate the PC version a 4 or 5 for quality and I am disappointed that the MAC version does not work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars P4 Dell user
Works great with Aol online McAfee virus products. I'm glad I didn't pay attention to the negative reviews. Window Washer by Webroot is another good one. McAfee Quickclean has a restore feature in case you make a mistake. Step by step to carefully make sure that you don't remove needed items. I have had no problems with any product from Amazon. I have quit paying the high price at the McAfee site. I don't think with all the new virus, and worms etc., that anything other than online protection is worth it. Buying in box virus products become outdated quickly. So I buy online virus protection now, which saves on downloads, and catch the new virus attacks.

1-0 out of 5 stars Crash Prone!
QuickClean 3.0 found the items that needed to be deleted, QuickClean 4.0 does the same, but instead of deleting them, it crashes my system. I'm using Windows XP Professional on a new AMD Athlon 64 3200+ and every time I run QuickClean 4.0, my system crashes. So, I tried it on a Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 98 SE system (Win2K=P4@3.02GHz & Win98=Athlon2800+) and those systems crashed as well. Don't waste you money buying this program ... read how clean the system yourself, it's much safer! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed...
I purchased this screen saver pack hoping that I'd be able to import the pictures into my current screen saver software, WebShots. However, Second Nature has created a similar screen saver program and the pictures are saved in a proprietary format. Therefore, you either use the screen saver program provided or say 'Bye bye' to your investment. Second Nature offers 1000s more pictures at a website, similar to WebShots. 3-0 out of 5 stars Good and bad
The bundle contains some good programs, and some bad/useless ones. Overall, Vol. 1 has more useful programs, and Vol. 2 seems to be filled with programs that I won't use. In summary:
Carbon Copy Cloner™ is great. It is $5 donationware, although it is fully functional even if one does not register. So it is a great program, but you are not getting a $20-$30 program here.
MacReporter™ is great. There are some freeware alternatives that do similar things (i.e., NetNewsWire Lite).
DragStrip® is a program I've had since OS 9, and NEVER use. I got a free upgrade and also have it for OS X, and I NEVER use it. On the other hand, I have Drag Thing and always pay for their upgrades. MUCH better than this poor imitation.
Path Finder™ is great, and it is one of the reasons why I decided to purchase the software. It can be a bit slow at times o my G4/400, and integration, even with Drag Thing, is not 100% flawless. For example, choosing the Path Finder desktop does not allow one to use the Drag Thing Trash Can that works fine in the regular Finder.
iCan™ is ok. I couldn't get my custom Trash icons to work, even after following instructions step by step. Drag Thing provides the ability to use custom Trash icons easily, although iCan has more custom features.
Quick Voice™ SE is a program I'll probably never use, so no comment.
iClock™ SE is great, but I already had it. Very nice clock replacement and much more.
Spamfire™ is tricky. I used to like it when I first tried it a long time ago, but after using POP Monitor and Spam Sieve, and having done many filters myself, I don't like it that much anymore. I was hoping the "Revenge" menu would be useful, but so far it has NOT worked on any of the Spam I receive (which is almost zero if I use POP Monitor). There's an option to report SPAM directly to the software developer, but ONLY for certain cases of SPAM. I was able to send a report once, and it's pretty much the same SPAM email I receive everyday. I don't know if my report helps at all, though. Also, if I use Spamfire and then try to use my email program and report te SPAM to Spam Cop, it appears as if I am the spammer. I didn't like Spamfire, but people with no other SPAM protection and no custom filters may find it useful.
iPulse™ is good. It doesn't really enable me to be more productive, but does provide some useful information about my system.
Labels X™ seems to overlap with Path Finder, which has a "Label" option. Panther also includes Labels as far as I know, so another piece of software that I won't use is included. Vol.1 had better Haxies included.
X Overload™ seems to be good. I haven't had the need to use it.
I decided to buy mainly because of Path Finder, and I also liked MacReporter, CCC, and iPulse. Four out of Ten ain't bad :) ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Great program for people whose lives are too enjoyable
I'd read superb reviews of Retrospect, so I was extremely disappointed with the unintuitive interface, the limited choice of backup drives supported (Iomega, for instance, is not among the Anointed, for the most part), and the inability of the program to perform basic functions despite coming with reams of (electronic) documentation. I've got to agree with bunab -- it's all very un-Mac-like. And, like bunab, I'm no newbie -- I've spent plenty of time installing and using software, troubleshooting hardware/software problems. So it's not that I'm a few Bradys short of a Bunch.

This is a very stubborn program and it's turning me into a very grumpy person.

1-0 out of 5 stars Frustration Ware PLUS
My honest rating: MINUS 5 stars.

An ideal gift for someone you despise or a masochist you want to please. It is worse than useless.

I have been using Macs since 1988, and I have never, repeat NEVER had as much trouble with any other application I have ever used. This is a quintessential example of an "un-Mac-like" and "non-intuitive" program. In spite of possibly forty hours of trying, I have been unable to make it work.

I have a Mac G3, 128 meg RAM, 4GB & 9GB hard drives, and a USB writable CD. I cannot get this program to even RECOGNIZE any drive but the one with the current operating system. Dantz technical support has been of no help.

Perhaps the problem is with me. I am an ex-computer programmer with a BS in physics (with honors) from Caltech, a year towards a PhD in physics from MIT (five A's and one B), and have an M.D. degree from Harvard Medical School.

Maybe I am just not smart enough to use this program.

My suggestion: Eschew Obfuscation and buy a different program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good and Very Easy
I bought this product, did not read my manual and still all my backups are safe, I use the internal CD-RW/DVD of my G4 that is supported now and working fine.

The best thing about this product is it's very intuitive user interface. I clicked around a couple of time and did the first succesful backup ten minutes after installing it.

If you want your data to be safe, and you do not want to spent time thinking about backups, BUY this product and get it over with. There a lot nicer things to do than backup and the people that make this software obviously understood that!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Simple, effective, limited
This program works, and works well for all external SCSI
devices.

Read that again carefully: external SCSI devices.

Got that new mac with the DVD-R/CD-RW drive, not supported.

Got floppies: Fine
Got a supported (and the list is long) external SCSI CD-RW: fine
Got an external Jaz/Zip/HD on that SCSI bus: fine.

Don't have a SCSI bus in that new 867Mhz G4: sorry, get one.
But if you have that external SCSI device, this is the simple,
effective and easy way to backup. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Even the most die-hard Mac user needs to use a Windows-based PC once in a while; there's just no getting around it. Short of buying a second computer, Connectix Virtual PC 5.0 is the ideal solution. This powerful emulation engine turns any Mac into a Windows PC, if only for the time that it's running, without the need for additional hardware. It also takes advantage of existing hardware, like tablets, mice, printers, and hard drives, and uses your existing network connections for connecting to the Internet. Most remarkable of all, it runs as if it were a Mac application, alongside other Mac apps, supporting full copy-and-paste and file-sharing functionality.

Virtual PC 5.0 offers full Mac OS X compatibility, supporting multiprocessor Macs, Windows XP Home and XP Professional, the ability to share removable media drives, an improved user interface, and other enhancements. Virtual PC also supports the installation of multiple guest operating systems, such as Windows 98, Windows 2000, and even Linux.

Because this is a software-only emulation package, its performance is directly tied to the speed of your machine. In our testing, we installed Virtual PC 5.0 on both a 400 MHz G3 PowerBook (Pizmo) with 640 MB RAM, and a 500 MHz dual-processor G4 with 1.5 GB RAM. Both machines were running OS X 10.1.4. As one would expect, Virtual PC 5.0 on the PowerBook was substantially slower, while the dual-processor G4 was fairly snappy. Virtual PC 5.0 itself performed as advertised, though, making this an ideal solution for someone who occasionally needs Windows compatibility.

Would we want to work full-time on this kind of Windows machine? No. But if we need to translate a document or test a Web site on the Windows version of Netscape, or perform some other Windows-specific task, this approach sure beats buying and maintaining additional hardware (assuming the hardware you've got has the necessary horsepower). --Mike Caputo ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Virtual PC 5.0 Windows XP
I have an "old" Power Mac G4 dual 1 GHZ processor with 1.5G of RAM installed. I am running the software under OSX. I do not believe that the OS 9 version supports dual processors.
The installation was a bit rough. I had to install and uninstall two times. The upgrade, v 5.04 is supposed to make this easier. I don't think you can install the update until you install the original version so any fixes seem useless if you first have to jump the install hurdle before updating.
Once things booted up, performance has been great. I would hesitate to wonder how well it would work with a slower processor. This version recognizes both processors.
I echo the comments about documentation. Connectix assumes too much. The second CD is used if you are prompted to insert your Windows CD. I guess it has a bunch of drivers.
I am waiting for a response from technical support regarding neccessity of using a firewall and antivirus. I run NIS on both the Mac and the virtual XP PC. I think it is needed, but NIS definitely bogs down the app. Still acceptable, but not as jawbreaking fast as the original install.
Another sore point I have with Connectix is technical support. You get one free incident response and then you are charged[...]after that. So my inability to initially install burned my response up and that response also applied to my email request.
They do have a forum, but I would have hoped for a little more support, maybe 30 days.
I would definitely respect the minimum system requirements listed. I am near the top as far as Mac performance and would wonder how well it would work with a G3 or a 500 MHZ G4.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lousy piece of software!!!! BEWARE!!!
I am a recent Mac convert. I have used Windows machines for many, many years. When I bought my IMac, I had heard about this program and was very excited...just think the best of both worlds, OS X and Windows XP Home. I plunked down my hard-earned ... and boy am I disappointed. THIS SOFTWARE IS BEYOND SLOW!!!! The documentation is lacking, the installation took several hours, and I now remember why I switched to a Mac in the first place. Believe me when I say, PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS SOFTWARE!!!! YOU WILL REGRET IT IF YOU DO. IT IS MUCH, MUCH TOO SLOW TO BE OF ANY USE.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money
I bought this program to run one Windows program for a Garmin GPS receiver. I have a newer model Imac with 1 gig of memory, so it's not short of resources. I was completely frustrated and finally gave up. To begin with, Connectix' documentation is very bad. You get to the installation instructions about 3/4ths of the way through the manual. They are incomplete and unclear. The onscreen instructions are just as bad: they don't even tell you to insert the second of the discs at the appropriate time. It was only after hours of trying things that I finally got Windows XP to run at all. And that's when I discovered how slowly it runs. I mean crawling, not walking, slow. It took forever to draw a map, print it, etc. I gave up; just loaded the map program on the wife's pc. You do the same and you'll save the money and effort. What a waste of both.
