Amazon.com Review

With new computer viruses appearing on the Internet and being featuredin the news almost every day, it pays to protect your Mac from unwelcomeinfections. Not only does Norton AntiVirus 7.0 protect your computer from macroviruses (the most common form of virus on the Macintosh), but it even monitorsfor virus-like activity indicating that you could have a virus.

If you suspect that a virus has already infected your Mac, you can start up fromthe Norton CD and scan your computer before you even install the software.Installation is simple, and only requires you to select a level of protectionfrom "No Protection," if you prefer to scan for viruses manually, to "FullProtection," which will scan all programs, files, and e-mail attachmentswhenever you download or use them.

If you already use Norton Utilities6.0, then installation of Norton AntiVirus 7.0 will even add an AntiVirusbutton to the Norton Utilities main control screen. Another advantage of NortonAntiVirus 7.0 is the LiveUpdate feature. This allows you to check for updates tothe Norton AntiVirus 7.0 application and virus definitions with a single click,or to specify times to check automatically when you are online.

Once you have scanned all the files and applications on your hard drive thefirst time, checking for viruses on new files that you download is so fast thatyou hardly notice it happening. In all, Norton AntiVirus 7.0 provides a user- friendly and extremely powerful way of keeping your Mac virus-free andprotected. --Daniel Jardine ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars NAV 7.0 Offers Good Protection for Macs
"Norton AntiVirus 7.0" by Symantec offers Mac users good protection from most "known" computer viruses, not just the "macro" viruses which did infect some Macintosh systems before Microsoft made a patch available to MS Word users late last year. (Be sure to use the "Word Count" feature on any "old" MS Word files that were created prior to using NAV 7.0, or after installing the MS Word patch, when using NAV 6.0.)

While NAV 7.0 offers the same LiveUpdate feature as NAV 6.0, I have found that this dial-up feature, (which your modem can access directly or through an ISP with the Apple Remote Access control panel enabled), seems to download new virus definitions somewhat less often than the previous version, or about once a month. However, when I have used my browser to access the relevant area on the Symantec website, I seem to be able to "update" virus definitions, libraries, and vir.scan.dat files more often.

The NAV 7.0 "live updates" take less time than do the NAV 6.0 ones, and the anti-virus detection goes on in the background. The few times I have received "warnings" have been when I was installing software (without disabling this anti-virus application) or otherwise making some modification of a setting on the System folder. NAV 7.0 interfaces very well with Mac OS 9.1 and OS 9.04. (I hope it interfaces with Mac OS X.)

This software is also part of Norton SystemWorks 1.0, so if you purchase that application software you do not need to buy NAV 7.0 separately, (although I did so because I bought SystemWorks 1.0 later). In SystemWorks 1.0, there are separate buttons for NAV 7.0 and LiveUpdate, as well as for Norton DiskDoctor; Speed Disk; FileSaver, UnErase, and Volume Recover, (which I had had to disable with Mac OS 9.0 and OS 9.04, but now these last three features work fine with Mac OS 9.1). If you suspect an infection of your hard disk, you can restart your Mac by using the CD-ROM as your start-up disk, while holding down "c" on your keyboard. Be sure to disable any password protection first.

In this separate version of NAV 7.0, the LiveUpdate is part of the application. (If you click on the "Apple" and read "About Norton AntiVirus," you can see this summary: the creation date of your "Current Norton AntiVirus Defs file"; the creation date of your Current Norton AntiVirus Library file"; the creation date and versions of the current vir.scan.dat files; and the creation date of your Current Norton AntiVirus Macro Scan Lib file. This information helps you to keep up your anti-virus LiveUpdates when you choose not to have regularly scheduled ones set in your Preferences.

The Preferences for NAV 7.0 are excellent. You can customize those areas that you wish to protect, and you can perform a manual scan at any time. You can turn on and off "Auto Protect." The Scan/Repair Preference is excellent--you can choose several levels of auto repair, from minor to major fixes. A complete report is created which you can save and print. You can set both General and Custom Preferences to reflect the level of protection you want. As well, you can perform preventive actions, and decide how you wish to be alerted, and for how long, if a potential virus or virus-like activity is detected on your computer.

I recommend Norton AntiVirus 7.0 highly. You can use any e-mail application, internet browser, and online service with peace of mind, knowing that you have this software protection. In addition, I recommend that you obtain and install Norton Personal Firewall 1.0 (Macintosh) by Symantec to insure even more protection for the files on your Macintosh computer.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Really Works
came home from a family vacation and my Adobe software told me "there are no images in the camera". I could view the images from the camera, but I could not download them to my PC. I finally determined the I had a corrupted Compact Flash card, and hoped that Lexar Image rescue would let me recover my pictures. I was able to recover more than 95% of the images in my camera and save them to my PC. It was fast and easy. This will only work with a Lexar CF card, but if you have the same problem I did, get Image Rescue, you'll be very happy with this product. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Stephen King's F13 decks out your computer with a horror aesthetic, offering "deathtop" images, "screamsavers," and a trio of minigames. The capper is a beautifully presented novella, Everything's Eventual, a story that brings King's usual themes into a high-tech context.

The program is largely disappointing. It has been argued that the most critical element of horror media is sound, and F13 does have a cornucopia of chilling and ominous noises. However, everything else is carefully honed to a PG level of taste--rather than being scary, or even creepy, most aspects of F13 fall into the category of horror camp. Two of the three minigames are simple twitch games. In Bug Splat, you flatten insects messily before they can overwhelm your screen; in Whack-A-Zombie, you dispatch the undead with a shovel. The third game, No Swimming, lets you feed various animals to a school of piranha. The games are hilarious, especially Whack-A-Zombie. They're not very challenging, though, and definitely not fear-inspiring.

As for the novella, while its interface is gorgeous, it is also weak when compared to Stephen King's other work. It has a simplistic moral, a predictable ending, and offers little in the way of edge.

Still, hard-core King fans who want a complete collection may enjoy F13, as will younger horror aficionados who cut their teeth on the watered-down terrors of R. L. Stine. For everyone else, if you want truly scary wallpaper and other trappings for your PC, you will probably have to look elsewhere. --Alyx Dellamonica ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Gift for the Horror Collector
For those of you who aren't familiar with F-13, it is a complition of games, screen savers, scary sounds, backdrops, and a short story. My favorite backdrop is the cemetery. I tried using the screensavers (It's just lightning was my favorite.) and had memory problems on both my Performa and my iMac. Any suggestions out there? There are oodles of scary sounds, some of which grossed me out. The games are good too. Whack-a-Zombie is challenging and very addictive. I liked the variety of the ghouls in this game. Bug Splat is somewhat addicting and very gory. No Swimming was fun for five minutes, but then got a little boring after the fifth cow got eaten. More variety could've been used with that game.Everything's Eventual was very good. I won't spoil the plot for you. You will just have to go out and buy it for yourself.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't blink... you'll miss it
Very short, games looks like they are from about 10 years ago, the only thing that makes it somewhat worthwhile is the story. One word.... STUPID.

1-0 out of 5 stars Entirely mediocre, inlcuding the story....
I agree with another reviewer, this should have been freeware. Not only is this a TOTAL waste of money, but a lot of it is really disturbing, AND the graphics and games are so lame! The "sounds" are really sick, I mean how often can you listen to someone being stabbed or strangled? Why would you want to? The only good screensaver is a demented clown, but again, the graphics left me wanting SO much more! And the screensavers--forget it. They range from crappy animation to again, really queasy and mysoginist! What kind of person wants to see a woman stabbed over and over agian as she struggles for help? And you can see this scene played out in every room of the house! Yech! Don't get uppity, I AM a King fan, but this collection of sickness, plus a TOTALLY mediocre story are a big time and money waste!

5-0 out of 5 stars Know what you're buying!
For the few people that complain that F13 is not a real game--read the reviews, preview the package BEFORE you buy--if you were expecting a full-length, feature game then you only have yourself to blame! It's evident that it's a time-killer rather than the standard computer game. However, for true Stephen King fans (and for those who love to find new ways to kill time at the computer), this is a must have. Great features, lots of fun...and purely King.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too much fun!
I am a real estate agent and I have the murder and mayhem screen saver(great looking house that changes seasons) on my computer at work and EVERYONE that sees it gets a big kick out of it! The games are fun also! ... Read more

Personal Observation

I have been using QuicKeys from version 3 and 4 to make my Mac computer work faster for me. I highly recommend QuicKeys to my clients and friends for easy of use and for automating functions.

How did I avoid hand wrestling with my computer mouse? I was able to eliminate unnecessary hand and wrist motions with my computer mouse when I had to complete several time consuming OCR (Optical Character Reader) projects.

For example, I use OmniPage Pro for scanning information for my projects. By using QuicKeys, I was able to assign control function keys for OmniPage Pro's Scan Image, Perform OCR and Save As functions. Using these keyboard commands makes my work project easier plus saves me hours.

Pro Reaction

QuicKeys 5.0 is a time saver for Mac users using Mac OS 9 with its more robust features for reducing work project time. QuicKeys 5.0 is an excellent needed upgrade for the serious Mac users with fast Mac GS 3 and GS 4 computers. Also, QuicKeys is fun for new iMac computer users who want to add new toolbars and keyboard functions to their game menus.

QuicKeys 5.0 makers saved paper by eliminating unnecessary printing of new manuals. The Addendum to QuicKeys 4.0 manual is concise. It shows you how to use the new functions of QuicKeys 5.0.

Con Reaction

I missed not having a Short Guide for using QuicKeys 5.0. The guide could have included installing the program, trouble shooting and launching programs for the first time QuicKeys user. Examples and Task projects for using QuicKeys could have included in the manuals. Also, a new Mac owner’s manual with visual instructions for using the QuicKeys functions would be appreciated.

Final Notes

Control Your Macintosh computer. Especially for Mac OS 9 users.

QuicKeys is the leading automation utility software. The new QuicKeys version 5.0 adds speech triggers, day-of-the-week timers, tabbed and pop-out toolbars, time-saving features and improvements.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't get rid of your beloved Mac
All the printers currently on the market have dsl or parallel port connectors. PowerPoint allows you to hook a serial port (the round Mac printer connection) to any printer. I use PowerPoint to connect my old Power Mac to a brand new (HP 900C series) printer. It works beautifully with all my programs (wordprocessing, internet, pdf files, photos, etc) and even accomodates various layout settings. It is extremely easy to install. You just attach the enclosed cable and pick out your printer from the list on the CD. Also I have found this a good company to deal with for support and upgrades.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great with PowerBook
I bought PowerPrint to use with my PB G3 and an old Panasonic dot matrix printer at my office. So far, it has worked very well for me, with the exception of printing from ClarisWorks 4. This seems to be a solid product that does what it says it will do, i.e., allow Mac (serial) users to print to PC (parallel) printers. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

As is often the case with dually developed software, theMacintosh version is better. While Stuffit Deluxe 5.5 does makecross-platform file exchange easy by supporting the most popular Windowscompression formats, Mac users have long been used to Stuffit (.SITformat) compression--which gets about 20 percent smaller. Combined withversion 5.5's new browsing feature and direct menu-bar access, Stuffitusers have an all-around essential utility for any Mac.

The browsing feature allows you to peruse the contents of a compressedarchive without actually expanding it--you can double-click on the onefile that you need and the utility will unstuff only it. If you've gota small hard drive, this is a perfect way to keep everything compressedto save space while accessing files as fast as if you were browsingyour Documents folder normally. Stuffit Deluxe also integrates withyour Web browser and e-mail client to simplify decompressing downloads, and it adds a handy menu to both your desktop and to your pop-up menusfor quick access to compression and decompression functions fromanywhere.

Version 5.5 now features full compatibility with Mac OS 9.0--but youonly need System 7.5.3 or higher to make use of it. This is one of afew key utilities every Mac owner should have. --Erik Macki

Stuffit-Supported Compression Formats: StuffIt (.sit), Zip(.zip), Bzip (.bzip), BinHex (.hqx), MacBinary (.bin), UUencode (.uu,.uue, .U), Gzip (.gz), Tape Archive Format (.tar, .tgz), .arc, CompactPro (.cpt), DiskDoubler (.dd), .lha, MIME (.mim, .mime), AppleLink(.pkg), Unix Compress (.Z), Private File (.pf) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a must-have for Mac users on the Internet
This package contains more than just one piece of software, but actually a suite of products that are intuitive and easy to use. There is also (believe it or not) a printed manual ... and it has been written for mere mortals, not just geeks!

The stuffit expander can be downloaded for free, but what if you need to stuff some files (like a bunch of photos you want to send to Grandma via e-mail) to send over the Internet? This is the software you need. It will mount and create disk images, create archives and you can also include password protection on your archives. Windows users can also "unstuff" files sent to them that are stuffed w/ Stuffit Deluxe as the Windows version of the expander software is also free and can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website. The manufacturer has been faithful in updating this software over the years and Stuffit is here to stay. I've been using this software for nearly 10 years, and it just keeps getting better. It will open a lot of mysteriously archived files including .cap, .bin and .zip without error. Works in tandem with web browsers or as a stand-alone. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Wash and bleach away real good!!!!!!!!!
Brought this program because the reviews said it was a great product; so you think. BEWARE!!!! This software worked well, and too well, a matter a fact. It cleans the folders it's suppose to, and did a great job as far as freeing up hard drive space. That bleaching feature even works great too. It really does get rid of files permanently. The only thing it did that I did like was deleting an important registry file that store all your restore data, thus which, you can't do a system restore if this file is deleted. If you configure the software porperly, you'll never have this porblem, but, as for me, I was lucky to have McAfee Office, which has Uninstaller; enabling me to restore the deleted registry file after a wash.

To sum it all up, I'm sticking with Uninstaller. It may not work as well as Window Washer, but it doesn't delete an important system and registry file needed to keep you computer running smooth. Though Uninstaller lets me clean my ststem manually and requires about an hour to do, it time well spent knowing I won't lose any important files.

5-0 out of 5 stars Window Washer washed off 362MB of junk
I had used another similar product called CyberClean for many months. I recently downloaded Window Washer and ran the thing. After a minute or so, it reported back that 362MB of disk space had been freed. I had no idea that much junk was on there; it really piles up. I have now purchased Window Washer for a permanent place on my computer; goodby CyberClean. By the way, all my other programs still work.

I am a graphics "nut", and I'm always looking for new programs to create and/or show off my graphics and photographs in interesting ways. The FlipAlbum Standard 5.0 is one of those great utilities that helps you showcase your cherished photos and graphics in a virtual 3D photo album.
It is SO simple to install and use, it practically runs itself! You can also change background, cover, and page themes, add music, add your own text annotations. It also lets you save and even upload your album to a website for viewing. And the best part is your photos and album pages will never crease, rip or yellow over time;-) ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Unnecessary
Sure, you can buy this software, but the question is, "Why would you want to?" There has not yet been a single Mac OS X virus in the wild. If you're a security nut who's concerned about a possible future virus, go buy it, but buyer beware. The only reason you would need antivirus software for your Mac would be if you were running Virtual PC for Windows, but even then, you would want a Windows version, and there is no possibility that viruses could transfer from the Virtual PC to your Mac because the Mac cannot understand the language these viruses are programmed in. Amazon.com Product Description

Screen Creator Deluxe requires no graphic tools or artistic ability. Follow the helpful wizards from first steps to finished project; it even creates a self-installed version for sending to your family or friends. Use your MP3 audio files, digital camera, scanned photos and images, AVI movie files, and clip art. Create professional 2-D or 3-D cubes or triangles in only minutes. The software also includes professionally made screen savers, along with sound files, clip art, and other useful items.

Screen Savers are created with segments. Each segment is like a page where you can add multiple images, text, and even audio to personalize it. More than 30 transition effects are included. The new worksheet view lets you manage your project quickly by showing all of its attributes.

You can modify up to 10 graphic images per segment, the x and y rotational coordinates, starting points, duration, size, transition effects and speed, even the font style and size. Up to 1,000 segments can be used. When you're finished, review the sequence, make changes, then preview the action in full screen. Then click the Build button and you have a completed project. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not near as good as it could be.
I got this as a gift from Amazon.com. I have been using Axialis Screen Saver Producer 3.5 which can use gifs, any type picture and audio file as well as Flash and other type videos. This program is so limited and Screen Saver Producer is about the same price. Compare the two before you buy. I do professional graphics, so take it for what it's worth.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use and fast!
This program is great for first time Screen Saver designers. It does all the work for you, including the creation of an installer so that you may distribute your screen saver to friends and family. There is a fee, however, if you wish to sell your screen saver.

Screen Creator is fast, efficient and very easy to understand. The toughest thing you will have to do is scan in photos and choose images or sound. It takes a bit of time to understand all the fade in and fade out options, which are almost limitless when the variables of speed, color, image and text are applied to them. Otherwise, this program allows you to create a professional looking screensaver in a short amount of time.

There are only 2 drawbacks to this program. The first being that once you create the screen saver, there is no option for turning the sound on or off. I guess though, you can just turn your sound off on your computer, but that is somewhat inconvenient. The second drawback is that you don't have the option to create a screen saver that runs exactly the same way on all computers, due to so many variables. For example, a screen saver that I created on an 833 mhz processor ran far too slow on a 350 mhz processor and way too fast on a 900 mhz processor, causing the graphics and sound NOT to run as I had planned. If there was a way to compensate for processor speeds this would be the best program that I've used for creating and sharing screensavers.

Ultimately, it is best to use this program to create screensavers for yourself or people using exactly the same computer as you. But,I have already recommended this to many people!

It is definitely worth the money! ... Read more
