Amazon.com Review

Adobe may have the lock on professional graphics production withPhotoshop, but it has long been engaged in a drawn-out battle with Quark for thehearts and wallets of the desktop publishing crowd. PageMaker 7.0, Adobe'slatest effort in the desktop publishing arena, won't set it ahead of QuarkXPress4.1, but it does have plenty of appeal for small businesses and other audiencesthat have minor publishing needs.

PageMaker 7.0's user guide measures in at more than 400 pages, and itthoughtfully explains every aspect of the vast and complex program. A wide rangeof impressive-looking templates, which cover just about every type of documentimaginable (including business cards, labels, newsletters, ads, posters, andmore), makes PageMaker a little more accessible to users unfamiliar with itsfunctionality. The templates are divided into various levels of complexity, withthe lowest level containing helpful annotations for novice users.

While its improvements over version 6.5 are minimal, PageMaker 7.0 makes a fewworthy strides to justify its sparkly new version number. Among the most welcomeis a surprisingly intuitive data merge feature, which allows users to configuretarget areas in their publications and import respective fields from aspreadsheet or database. Unfortunately, it only recognizes comma-delineated CSVor TXT files; it doesn't import data directly from common file formats createdby Microsoft Excel or Lotus 1-2-3.

Ironically, another area of improvement in PageMaker 7.0 is compatibility withother programs. It easily imports and handles layered image files fromIllustrator and Photoshop 5.0 and 6.0, and features input converters for filescreated in QuarkXPress and Microsoft Publisher. PageMaker's PDF exportcapabilities have been enhanced both in the main program and with the includedAcrobat Distiller applet, allowing users to configure security and embedded tagoptions.

Even with its plethora of templates, PageMaker 7.0 isn't by any means anentry-level application. Nonprofessional users who have never used a high-caliberdesktop publishing program should probably consider a simpler package such asMicrosoft Publisher. While hardened, professional magazine designers tend toprefer QuarkXPress, Adobe PageMaker 7.0 is nonetheless a complex and powerfultool that packs a serious learning curve.

PageMaker 7.0 is perfect for small businesses that can't afford to hire outdesigners for promotional materials, or for companies that have the need tocreate professional-looking PDF files. Owners of PageMaker 6.5 might not feelcompelled to upgrade, but companies and creative folks newly in the market for amuscular desktop publishing tool will be well served by PageMaker 7.0. --JoelDurham Jr. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Class Act for Mac Computer Users
PageMaker marries your text, graphics and images into one PageMaker file from your computer desktop. Also, you can send the file to a service provider. Commercial service providers can turn your PageMaker files into high quality newsletters and magazines.

Thumbnail Designs to Comps

You need pencil and paper to create your thumbnail designs. The tradition still works for creating your design for layout pages in PageMaker. Follow this with the "Comp" (Comprehensive Sketch) for the number of pages, number of columns, picture placement, type specs and add color for affect.

The Comp is the first proof the client approves. Comps could include tables, sidebars, footnotes and various headlines. Next, have your client approve or suggest alterations for your work.

PageMaker Basic to Advanced Construction

You have the required tools and utilities built into PageMaker for creating basic layouts. With PageMaker you can automate repetitive tasks and combine manual operations into a few short steps. These are just some of the ways for speeding up your production time with PageMaker.

Avoid Costly Mistakes

Advantages of digital files allow you to change the text fonts, images, and colors before finally sending your publication to your service provider. Create several documents from your Master document. Use your PageMaker magazine advertisement on your website. You can also use your PageMaker file for your company sales kit and trade show posters and banners.

PageMaker Work Environment

Start with: Title Bar, Menu Bar, Tool Palette (Tool Box) and Control Palette. Add Page Navigation icons and finish with Story Editor.

The PageMaker mighty nine menus: Start with File, Edit, Layout, Type, Element and Utilities. Add View, Window and Help for direction.

PageMaker 7 and PDF files

PageMaker supports the import of Acrobat 5's PDF format files. Also, PageMaker 7 can now produce PDF files throughout the new Distiller 5. This is significant as PDF has establishes itself as one of the preferred medium for commercial print.

Quick Look at PageMaker 7 Improvements and Bundled Goodies

• Graphic placement is improved.
• Drag-and-drop placement works well.
• QuarkXPress 4.0 documents can be converted to PageMaker format.

Bundled goodies worth having: PageMaker 7.0 includes 57 font families with 207 Adobe typefaces, a huge collection of design templates, and a large library of Adobe Illustrator clip art and stock photo images.

Pro Reaction

PageMaker 7.0 has hundreds of A4 and U.S. letter templates for newsletters, brochures, flyers and advertisements.

PageMaker 7 now supports files in Photoshop's native PSD and Adobe Illustrator 9's AI format. In addition, PageMaker 7.0 comes with its own 401 page User Guide.

PageMaker's unique features are its ability to wrap text completely around objects. Another unique feature to PageMaker is its preflight capabilities to help users deliver error-free documents to printers and service bureaus.

Con Reaction

PageMaker 7 works with Mac OS 9 Classic and not directly in Mac OS X. You can still access it throughout OS X platform.

Missing is the Adobe Press book on how to use the Adobe PageMaker 7.0 templates similiar to Adobe PageMaker Plus 6.5 Productivity Kit. Also, there is no command to automatically open the placed PSD back into Photoshop.

3-0 out of 5 stars For Beginners Only
I learned graphic design and layout on PageMaker, and wished Adobe would take the product seriously. Instead, PageMaker seems to be falling into the ranks of Microsoft Publisher as a program people use believing it'll do the job right.

While many service bureaus still offer PageMaker services, it is by far better to go with Quark. It can do more, has more flexibility with printers and publishing houses, and will cause fewer problems regarding bugs and crashes.

The plus side is the templates. Beginners will depend on these, and templates simply aren't found in Quark. They will reduce the learning curve a little, though be aware, as a result, you templated documents will suffer from a canned, over-done look. Just the same, your work will be clean and well-structured.

If you intend to be a serious designer, stay away. None of the people you want to work for use this. This is for amateurs only.

If you have PageMaker, don't upgrade. 6.5 is plenty: the new stuff isn't worth the money. Do a little homework on Quark, and figure out how to convert your files with the newest version. It the short run, you'll spend a few more bucks, but in the long-run, you'll save time and frustration.

I cautiously recommend PageMaker 7.0, but only as a tool for users intending to publish newsletters from their desktops.

Amazon.com Product Description

Play, Inc.'s Amorphium Real-Time Digital 3D Sculpting and Painting is an easy-to-use, yet powerful 3-D rendering program for beginners and professionals alike. Amorphium lets users interactively create in three dimensions by simply sculpting an object in real time. This next-generation software means no wire frames, no polygons, no rendering. It's as easy as working with clay and a brush. When you call up a basic shape from Amorphium's Tools and Distorts menu and start playing with it, you quickly get a sense of what the tools do. You can rotate your object in real time so you'll see changes as you work.

There are 18 options for distorting your object, including twisting, twirling, stretching, bending, and more. In addition, 24 brush shapes enable you to sculpt the object in various ways. For example, you can "brush" a rough texture on all or part of the object. You can actually animate these distortions for attention-grabbing Web graphics. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Something Bryce users will want in their "Bag of Tricks"
I jumped on Amorphium the second it hit the market, now that Play has sold off everything to Electric Image, I'm rethinking that strategy.

First off, let me say, Amorphium is an EXCELLENT tool for editing models, as well as for creating new models. It's a MUST HAVE for Bryce users. Since I am a Bryce fanatic (been devoted since the buggy version 2.0), I would have to say it's a must have for Bryce.

Sadly, Electric Image has jacked up the price where it's getting out of reach of the casual user. However, you can probably pick up Amorphium (1.0) at a decent price. GET IT! It's easy to use, has some decent modeling options, but excels at deforming existing models. Add some slight bumps & dents and you've got a more realistic looking model to import into Bryce.

My biggest disappointment was in the marketing hype of Amorphium. The feature list made it sound as if Amorphium supports the ability to paint directly on the model & then export the image. I thought I was getting a bargain, a model editor/creator AND something similar to MetaCreations Detailer (which surprisingly seems to have disappeared). WRONG! You do NOT get this with Amorphium, Amorphium Pro (ala Electric Image) promises this feature, but after being mislead once I am very reluctant to let it happen again.

Amorphium hit the streets from Play at [price], if you can find it for...less, grab it... Amorphium Pro (2.0/Electric Image) lists for about [price], and it may be worth it if it does incorporate the ability to create image maps too.

Amorphium is more than decent, so if you can pick it up cheap go for it. Just don't expect any support from Electric Image, they are only acknowledging the existence of 2.0 (Pro)!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Too little, Too weak, Too late
Amorphium was the first graphics engine I bought. Back then, before I sank deeper into the graphic arts, I thought it was the best thing I had ever aquired. Unfortunately, this proved to be false. After many days using Amorphium I decided to go out and buy another 3D modeling program. The name of it was Bryce 3D 4. Bryce opened up whole new worlds to me: Render options, size options, and even a huge variety of texture and material options! But I'm not here to tell you about Bryce; I'm here to tell you why I did not give this a good review.

First, the fact that you could not anti-alias(the removal of sharp, or jagged edges produced by low resolution) and could not pick your render options was a huge setback. Second, the real time processor is just too weak. Instead of allowing the user to create complex 3D models, Amorphium has opted for simplicity. This means you cannot effectively create fog, transparent objects, or any other complex model. Why? To help the biggining user. Third, the lack of a real texture editor and material editor. Here are the three options that Amorphium gives its user: Diffuse, Ambience and Opacity. This is just too little; I've seen more texture effects on Adobe PhotoDeluxe!

I could go on and on about the imperfections of this program. However, to save the reader time, I will give you the scoop: Buy this if your a biggining user looking to create simple graphics on the web. If you don't fill this catagory than save your money for any of the quality products from Corel, Flash, and Direct 3D/Game Designer type programs. Do not waste your money on this weak of a program. Period.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amorphium Rules!
This is the coolest software I ever see! I was playing around with this thing and it is cool! You can create anything you like and you should get this stuff and you will be amazed. So get this software and enjoy the fun! Be a PRO!

5-0 out of 5 stars Infinite Variety of Form
Imagine a lump of modeling clay that is infinitely pushable, pullable and paintable. Then add the ability to twist or bulge, or add waves or spikes in a statisfyingly symmetrical way to the whole shape with one mouse drag.

Amorphium throws away the wire frames and gives you real time smooth 3D rendering as you shape and color. This modestly priced package is both intuitive and fun for kids and sophisticated enough for professionals to create compelling organic images. The interface lets you play and discover without reading one word of the guide, but there are a few interesting features that the guide can point you to.

What many other graphics packages let you do with painting, Amorphium lets you do with shaping. You can select different shaped objects to poke with (shaping brushes) and select the size and pressure. You can choose to poke or pull from behind to mirror what you do in front, and then rotate object in space and see what you created from any angle. You can even use a mask with shaping operations. Shaping tools will not affect masked out areas but mask edges are still nice and smooth.

Best of all, as you press, your tool goes towards the center of the object in the 3d space so you can continue to refine surfaces in any plane.

Users of Bryce will recognize the interface style. With most of the tools (other than brushes), you click and drag on the tool icon itself and watch the main image as it changes in real time. For some tools a percentage number will appear unobtrusively if you want to note numeric values for future reference. My only quibble with this style is that the interface palettes of icons are rather dark. I feel like I am indulging my computer graphics addiction in a closet.

The features include applying images from other files to your object for shape or color, morphing from one shape to another, and animating your object to create movies.

The really fast and fun tools are called "distorts", which are like Photoshop filters (but much faster). You click and drag on the "distort" name and watch the shape twist or grow spikes or waves in response to the direction and length of the mouse drag. Applying one "distort" after another gives truly infinite and beautiful variety of form.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just like clay
Amorphium allows its users to manipulate basic shapes (sphere, cone, cylinder, and others) into 3D graphics. This program is the electronic equivalent to molding clay. Amorphium is a fun program to play with at a cheap price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Of course it's not Toast, but...
it does everything it says it will do. The box I bought never mentioned it would burn or copy movie DVDs (I believe that is still illegal thanks to Hollywood), and clearly states that it would "Burn data DVDs, multi-session data VDs, audio CDs, erase CD-RW & create disc images."

I am happy with this software, and am happier to see a more affordable alternative to Toast...Toast may be a great program, but I never used more than half of its features. Just my opinion...

1-0 out of 5 stars *Claims* to burn DVDs
...says it burns DVDs on the outside of the box. But after you open the box and install the software you find it's only data DVDs.

If you want to burn video DVDs (e.g. for a DVD player), you need UDF. This program doesn't support it, and acts like there's no such thing by not documenting it.

Everything this thing does is already part of OS X (e.g. burn data DVDs, audio CDs, erase CD-RWs & create disc images). If you teach yourself how to use the features of OS X to do the same tasks, then you've saved $30.

Dragon Burn may be worth a try. It's only $15 more, and it isn't a $100 feature-overkilled piece of software like Toast. Plus they have a trial version.

This MacBurn software adds no value, I think. If you still like MacBurn, good for you.

:(

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Toast... not even a cracker...
This product isn't nearly as good as Toast, and barely better than the burning provided by the OS for free.

If you want to do more than what the OS provides, spend the extra $50 for Toast.

Name: MacBurn
Price: $29.99
website: www.macXware.com
phone: 402-554-1400
pros: It is easy to load, the price is right and it actually comes with a very basic instruction book. I had no trouble copying files and music for the Mac.
cons: For non-geeks some of the abbreviations are totally meaningless. I was not able to get a burn on the Mac/PC hybrid that a PC could read.
moose rating: 3
reviewers name: Anita Williams

MacBurn is a cost effective program for burning audio CDs, and data CDs and DVDs. It is easy to load, works great in OS X (10.2.6 but best in 10.3) and straight is forward to use with either selection or drag and drop features. System requirements include a CD or DVD burner compatible with OS X, 700 MB of free HD space for burning about 80 minutes of Audio to CD, and Disk Image (ISO and DMG) creation only for OS X 10.3 and greater.

The program does all that it is advertised to do which is burn data to DVDs, do multi-session data on a CD, burn audio CDs, erase a CD-RW and create disk images. Well, actually I have to take their word for the disk image part since I didn't actually do this part. Loading the program is very straight forward as is the instruction booklet. However when I had
questions as to what an ISO or DMG was I couldn't find an answer. Being a non-geek I'm not familiar with these terms. Naturally I went to the HELP menu to see if I could find a bit more information. It wasn't too much help. There was just a slight bit more information in the HELP menu than what was in the included instruction booklet and it did not define ISO or DMG.

The program operated just fine for copying data on the Mac format and I actually could do multiple sessions on one CD. That is a useful feature. One thing to note here is that the multiple session feature only works on the Mac format. It is not an option for PC or Mac/PC hybrid. Multiple sessions are not recommended for audio CDs either. It can be done but the instructions indicate that some strange things may happen and it is not recommended. I just took their word for that too. It is possible to mix an audio session with a data session on a CD which is another handy feature. For those using rewritable CDs and DVDs the program can erase data so the disk can be reused.

The program will locate the drive that can write the CD/DVD or if there are multiple drives you can make your choice in the box below the menu panel. Then choose either data or audio session. Below that is the format selection box and the title box. There are several choices here. I must say that I was not able to use the Mac/PC hybrid option and produce a CD that could be read on a PC. I could do it with the PC option, just not the hybrid option. The next box contains the files to be copied. They can be dragged and dropped into this area or selected with the "Add File" or "Add Folder" buttons. A nice feature is the bar on the bottom of the pane which tallies how much space will be used on the disk.

When the burn button is activated this box drops down for further instructions. The "Allow Additional Burns" box must be checked in order to do multiple sessions on one CD or DVD. However this feature will only work on a Mac format. Hit "Burn" and the program does it job. Again, it is a good, affordable program that is easy to use. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

With each new release of Photoshop, Adobe manages both to satisfy theexpectations of existing users and to pull a few magic features out of its hat.Version 6 is no exception. Powerful vector editing and masking, improved layercontrols, layer styles, incredible typographic control, new Web publishingtools, and a cleaner, more accessible interface are already making version 5.5,itself a groundbreaker, look like ancient history.

Photoshop's new vector features provide even more control when compositingphotographic images. You can use the vector drawing tools simply to createpolygons and custom shapes, but they can also act as layer clippingpaths--vector masks that hide or reveal image areas in underlying layers.

Editable layer effects such as drop shadow and glow were introduced in version 5.5; in version 6, they have been renamed layer styles. New options includesatin, stroke and color, gradient, and pattern overlay. The layer stylesdialogue box provides much more control--bevel and emboss has five style optionsas well as adjusters for technique, depth, direction, size, soften, angle, attitude, gloss, contour, highlight mode, opacity--and that's not all of them. And as the name suggests, layer styles can easily be saved and applied to otherlayers.

You can enter and edit text directly onto the layer and set style attributesfrom the new tool options bar. Photoshop 6 seems to have benefited from some ofInDesign's superb typographic tools, with character and paragraph palettesproviding precise control. Web imaging tools have been revamped, withlayer-based slicing now available from within Photoshop itself, and a major overhaulof ImageReady introducing weighted optimization, rollover styles, and tweenedanimation.

If you want the best image editing software that money can buy, look no further. For users of 5.5, there never was a more compelling reason to upgrade. --KenMcMahon ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So glad I upgraded!
I am a relative "newbie" to Photoshop (about a year) and I put off upgrading. I guess I figured I hadn't gotten my "money's worth" out of Photoshp 5.5 yet. But, when I finally upgraded, I was so glad I did! I love this upgrade!

Improved Layer Styles, improved Gradients, improved cropping. I know there's much more, but I still am kind of a newbie, I can't remember them all. And the most dramatic and fabulous improvement - the TEXT function! Oh my gosh! No more annoying pop-up window to type text into! You just start typing on your image. Editing and changing fonts and sizes is so much easier now. Also, I like the taskbar thingie at the top of the screen. Very convenient, I don't know how I lived without it. ImageReady is also improved. I find myself using it more and more.

Also, I want to warn everyone - make SURE you have your CD of Photoshop 4 or above on hand. During the installation process, Photoshop 6 will want you to put in a previous version of Photoshop in your CD drive, to confirm you are qualified for an upgrade. They seem to only accept versions 4 or above. If you don't have a CD of at least version 4 of Photoshop, you need to contact Adobe support, and they will help you "unlock" the Photoshop upgrade, so that you can install it on your computer. Obviously, you must be a registered owner of Photoshop (any previous version) to qualify for this upgrade.

I read on Adobe's support site that sometimes it's better to drag the upgrade installation file from the PS 6 CD to your HD. Have your previous version of PS in your CD drive, ready and waiting. Then, start the PS 6 upgrade installation from the install file on your your HD. When you come to the part where PS 6 asks for a previous version of PS, it's right in your CD drive. (This way, you avoid the annoying and tricky "CD-swapping" right in the middle of the upgrade. Trust me on this one!) Anyway, MAKE SURE you have a CD of a previous version of Photoshop on hand. Just having the program installed on your HD isn't enough. Contact Adobe about getting a replacement if you lost your original CD to the previous version of PS.

Even though I am still a beginner/intermediate Photoshop user, I am finding MUCH to be excited about with this upgrade. I can imagine that most serious pro Photoshop users are elated. There's certainly a lot to be excited about. I cannot recommend this upgrade enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best gets even better!
Photoshop, over the years, has become the standard for image manipulation. With the upgrade to version 6.0, Adobe has made this program even better. The controls are easier to use and find. But the real highlight here, is the programs ability to use and manipulate text. The text interface is very much improved. There is no more palette. You can now directly manipulate text size and color within the frame. This alone, for many, will make this a must upgrade. In general, the tools are more intuitive than previous versions. And overall the work out of v6.0 seems 'cleaner' than from v5.5.

5-0 out of 5 stars A web designers must have!
I have been using Photoshop 6.0 for about a year now and I cannot imagine using any other graphics design program. If you own a digital camera, or design webpages with graphics, you need this industry standard program.

I am not a progessional graphics designer, but using photoshop 6.0 makes me look like I am. Every graphic and photo that goes on my companies webpage was created or touched up in photoshop. The "Save for Webpage" option is great. I can see how many seconds my graphic or photo is going to take to download on someones home computer. I try to keep every graphic under 5 seconds on a 28.8 modem. Photoshop lets me do this quickly and easily!

When I first opened up the program I didnt have a clue on how to do anything, but I got the Adobe Photoshop Classroom in a Book, and now I can do almost anything.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most powerful raster graphics program around...
Most of you reading this have heard of, or are using a version of Photoshop. That alone attests to its popularity. And you know the basics. The single most powerful raster graphics program around, made more powerful and flexible by the number of plug-ins available.

What's new:
"Vector shapes" - a little misleading in its meaning. Indeed they are vector shapes, but when saved, they are rasterized. Maybe future versions will integrate the fundamentals of Illustrator (or Freehand - both the best vector graphics programs available) a little better. But the shapes feature is quite useful for logos, and small icons.

Editable text effects - Not quite "text on a path," but a very welcome feature. After skewing the text with this feature, you are still able to alter font styles/sizes/colors with no problem.

Dockable Palettes - a great feature, if you have a large enough monitor (17" w/high-resolution setting, 19" w/mid-res setting), in order to see the dock. Allows you to place heavily used palettes in the upper right hand section, without having to move them around.

It has quite a few more feature, but those I've mentioned are my favorites. Coming from 5.0 to 5.5 was fairly unimpressive, but the jump to 6.0 has made it a worthwhile upgrade.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best image editing software that money can buy.
Powerful vector editing and masking, improved layer controls, layer styles, incredible typographic control, new Web publishing tools, and a cleaner, more accessible interface. Photoshop's new vector features provide even more control when dealing with photographic images something that is lacking in 5.5. You can also use the vector drawing tools simply to create polygons and custom shapes, but they can also act as layer clipping paths using vector masks that hide or reveal image areas in underlying layers. The editable layer effects such as drop shadow and glow that were introduced in version 5.5; have been renamed layer styles in version 6. New options include satin, stroke and color, gradient, and pattern overlay. The layer styles dialogue box provides much more control. Bevel and emboss has five style options, as well as adjusters for technique, depth, direction, size, soften, angle, attitude, gloss, contour, highlight mode and opacity. You can enter and edit text directly onto the layer and set style attributes from the new tool options bar. Web imaging tools have also been revamped, with layer-based slicing now available from within Photoshop itself. If you are looking for the best image editing software that money can buy, look no further this is the real deal.

Amazon.com Review

Corel scores a hit with the iMac crowd with this collection--it's the only software package we've seen that comes in a Bondi blue plastic case. This is not a case of the packaging being better than the package, though, as 20,000 photos, 60,000 clip art images, 300 fonts, 4,100 templates, and more are included on this six-CD-ROM set.

What pulls this collection together, though, is the application itself, which serves as both a catalog reader and document builder. Documents are started by selecting a template--and they are available for anything from calendars to brochures to greeting cards to invitations and more. Graphics are dragged and dropped into place, and everything can be printed out cleanly on whatever printer is installed. There is also a sample collection of different printer papers from Paper Direct.

All of this comes in an easy-to-carry, easy-to-store, blue hard plastic case. The container is large enough to hold all six CD-ROMs, the user manual/catalog, and about 20 sheets of blank printer paper. If Corel were to make the case available in any iMac flavor, it would score a bigger hit with the color-coordinated iMac crowd.

Additional software features include direct scanner support and digital camera support, giving you the ability to customize any generic template by importing custom photos and artwork. It's a great value for a family and home office, and a good way to jump-start a clip art and font collection. --Mike Caputo ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Corel Print House
I returned this product because it was NOT MACINTOSH compatible!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad....
A good product. Not great. But very useable. Yes, it could be a bit more intuitive. But over all, I have found this program (actually it's two programs bundled together) to be very usefull, and so loaded with features and fonts/images that, for the price, it is a very good buy. Well worth it.

1-0 out of 5 stars A poor software package
If you are able to read MacAddict's review of this, please know that they are right on the money! This program, though it includes thousands of graphics, is not worth buying. It is difficult to use. It's method of use is far from conventional. The workspace is too small. It is difficult to create things. My mother and I are still trying to become accustomed to it after several weeks of trying to make things work properly. We seriously still laugh at how rediculously difficult it is to use. ... Amazon.com Review

Adobe Design Collection 6.0 represents a fantastic value for the moneyby bringing together award-winning, next-generation design and publishingapplications for design professionals. This collection includes InDesign,Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat.

Adobe Illustrator has traditionally been reserved for the print and prepressmarketplace, but recent versions have targeted a broader audience, including agrowing contingent of new-school Web designers. With the latest incarnation ofIllustrator, Adobe aims to please both print and prepress designers, as well ascutting-edge Web designer communities. Illustrator manages to enhance itsexisting drawing tools with powerful productivity aids. And by focusing onimportant workflow, productivity, and database-connectivity features, Adobe hasgiven the user more time to explore new creative possibilities.

With Photoshop, Adobe continues to come up with an awe-inspiring mix of greatnew features, productivity enhancements, and tweaks and treats. Version 7 is noexception. One of Photoshop's many strengths is the versatility of its tools, and this has been stretched to new limits. Filter previews are bigger, theliquify tool has been enhanced, brush parameters have been extended, andcommonly used tool settings can be saved as presets. Photoshop continues to addmore features for the Web developer as well as the professional designer. Forexample, the creation of rollovers is simpler, and a new "selected" rolloverstate takes some of the repetitive strain out of nav bar production. All in all, this is an upgrade guaranteed to keep Photoshop at the cutting edge ofprofessional image editing.

InDesign is all about creative page layout. A high-end desktop publishingproduct, it is aimed squarely at professional designers who need maximumflexibility alongside strong document management and support for industrystandards. Eye-catching features such as transparency and blending are combinedwith more mundane, but important, abilities such as table-of-contents creationand index generation, to make this a more complete and rounded product thanearlier versions. Creativity in print has never been easier.

Acrobat is PDF-creation software from the people who first established the PDFstandard. PDF (Portable Document Format) remains the best way to make documentsthat can be read by anyone on any platform. Installation is easy and features afunction button that you can added to Office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. When you have written a document in these programs, simply clickthe PDF button on the toolbar and it will guide you through saving it as a PDF.Anyone with Acrobat Reader, which is free and available for download fromAdobe's Web site, can view the documents. These documents can also be uploadedto Internet sites or onto networks.

Adobe Design Collection 6.0 is a fantastic package that places award-winningprint, design, and Web authoring applications into one affordable package.--Chris Ryan ... Read more
