4-0 out of 5 stars Not great, just the best.
Of all the collections I have sampled, this is the one I chose to purchase, and in two years I haven't regretted it. Most of the art is useful, but even with a half million images, there are topics which are not covered in useful depth. I wish there was a greater emphasis on complex vector illustration, and that it was possible to search electronically; you really have to use the bulky catalog to find something.
Don't take this review as being too negative. If you are going to rely on a single collection, this is the one to get. The larger Art Explosion collections offer little more than extra variations on the images here, and most of the other publishers' mega-offerings are just junk.

4-0 out of 5 stars Contemporary, updated collection beats out IMSI MasterClips
Finally, Nova Development has got it right, delivering an excellent antidote to the cheesy and outdated Art Explosion 250,000 collection. The Art Explosion 525,000 has been updated to reflect the more sophisticated aesthetic of the 1990s, with thousands more images in contemporary styles such as brushstroke and woodblock. In addition, Nova places no restrictions on the use of these images in commercial materials, unlike their nearest competitor, IMSI. This collection wins my vote. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Adobe InDesign 2.0 is simply the best professional print design andlayout package available. Version 2.0 outweighs former market leader QuarkXPressand should dominate the future of desktop publishing with significantperformance improvements, seamless integration with other Adobe products, and abevy of sophisticated new visual effects and cross-media integration. Previousversions of InDesign were processor-intensive and sluggish. InDesign 2.0 runssignificantly faster and smoother, even on older systems like Pentium I and IIPCs. For Mac users, it is OS X native.

Graphic designers will love InDesign's robust feature set, which includesadvanced type tools that allow for multiple font-control options at both thecharacter and paragraph level. InDesign 2.0 also incorporates many of the mostuseful Photoshop visual effects, including editable drop shadows, lightingeffects, feathering, and transparency that can be applied to any object--text,graphics, or images. These effects can also be imported with native Photoshopand Illustrator file placement. In addition, InDesign's unlimited multiple undoand redo options offer a major improvement over QuarkXPress.

InDesign 2.0 not only supports tables and multipage table formatting (Quark 5.0cannot format multipage tables), it can also convert and retain the originalformatting of any tab-delimited table data from word processing, database, orspreadsheet documents such as Microsoft Word and Excel. InDesign 2.0 allows forseamless Acrobat PDF file import and placement, as well as the ability to importboth PageMaker and QuarkXPress documents (3.3 or later).

As with previous versions, InDesign 2.0 does not support documents created withQuarkXTensions. InDesign also does not allow for export to Quark or PageMakerformats or backward-compatibility file export, as did older InDesign fileversions. However, users can export InDesign 2.0 files in multiple mediaformats, including EPS, SVG, RTF, HTML, and XML. You can also embed Metadata(XMP) into InDesign layouts for automated workflows.

InDesign 2.0's Web publishing options are a significant step up over previousversions but are still fairly primitive; InDesign is emphatically not a Webeditor but instead offers limited Web publishing support. The HTML exportautomatically converts most text to images (rather than exact-positioning CSSlayers as one might expect), producing very large files with frequently poorimage quality and few image optimization options. There's also no support forbrowser preview, rollovers, or image maps, which QuarkXPress 5.0 provides.InDesign offers fairly simple and easy-to-use, well-formed XML support (no DTDs)that can both import and export XML tags; the XML in rival QuarkXPress is moreadvanced but less product-integrated and is DTD-based.

With its focus on visual effects, design production, and prepress and printingneeds, plus the added bonus of multichannel publishing support (print, Web,etc.), InDesign 2.0 is clearly intended for professional print and graphicdesigners. For easier-to-learn and more basic office and small-business documentpublishing, Adobe PageMaker or even a Microsoft publishing product is moreappropriate. Conversely, for large technical publications or larger corporationswith true cross-media publishing and content-management needs, Adobe FrameMakeris a better option, with more advanced native support for content markuplanguages and multiple export formats.

Though InDesign 2.0 offers many compelling new features, there remains room forimprovement, particularly for HTML export, WYSIWYG type menus, and more targeteduser tools. However, these are small complaints. InDesign 2.0 should be theproduct of choice for today's design professional. --Rich Ting ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerhouse for desktop publishers
I found that InDesign 2.0 offers greater flexibility than Quark and certainly is light years past PageMaker. Clearly, you need to read and compare the features of these page layout programs and, if at all possible, try the various page layout software before making a purchase. These programs still cost big bucks.

InDesign has so many whistles and bells that at first it overwhelms, but if you are already familiar with other Adobe software, the learning curve is not that steep and most of the tools and controls will seem fairly intuitive.

I especially like the flexibility of being able to import native Photoshop and Illustrator files and the easy-to-use links navigator. I also like all of the options for working with text and fine-tuning the appearance of a document. It's great to have a drop cap appear at the start of a paragraph without relying on extra tools (as in PageMaker) and seeing a preview of how a change in attributes will alter text of the same style. Features such as the ability to add metadata and export pages in SVG format are another plus.

The manual is pretty clear, though the section on breaking text links is needlessly confusing. Still, between the information in the manual and the online resource guide, most questions and issues are likely to be addressed.

If you are creating books, directories, and annual reports, then InDesign will make your life easier. It even converts Quark files so that you can work with any legacy documents.

5-0 out of 5 stars NEWSFLASH: QuarkXPress is HISTORY
When Steve Jobs announced that all the new 2003 Macs would only be able to boot in OS X, I figured it was time to step up to the plate, get oriented to the new OS and upgrade our art department. The only thing holding me back was not having a page layout app that ran natively in 10, and I had no intention of working in Jurassic mode. I had heard less than positive things about InDesign 1.0, but figured I'd do the free tryout from Adobe, since it would give me the chance to test drive Jaguar in an all-Adobe environment.

Talk about a revelation. This program's ease of use had me creating usable projects inside of a week, and by the time the tryout expired, I had converted about 150 pages of our company catalog from the old Quark files. That was when I realized how much we truly needed this package. It was as if I'd been using it for years. I could import files from Illustrator and Photoshop without having to save them as tiffs or eps. I could export press optimized pdfs without going through Distiller, that weighed in at a thrifty 4.5 mb ..... not bad when the Photoshop elements totalled over 50 meg! The tables tool is extremely helpful; it functions like a mini Excel, eliminating the need for tabs in charts. The text formatting is a breeze, the preview display looks great even at low quality, and proofs that I output to my inket printer look phenomenal. Just try doing that in Quark without getting nauseous. But wait - there's more ...... layer support and blending modes, transparency, drop shadows, gradiated text, and the list goes on. We don't need no steenking XTensions .........

Adobe InDesign is, at the time of this writing (11/02) still the only layout app that runs natively in Mac OS X, thus completing the Holy Publishing Trinity with Illy and PShop. In a way, Quark has done us a favor by dragging their feet on upgrading, thereby giving us a chance to try out a tool that is so much better, more intuitive and integrated with the other tools we have to use. It's as if Adobe stood back and observed all that didn't quite work about QXP (and that other abomination PageMaker which the company may just as well disavow), and created an app that works beautifully without having to think about it too much. Whatever the case, the timing is right, and we Mac users really appreciate it.

Adobe InDesign and Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar is, quite simply, a publisher's marriage made in Heaven.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have
If you're running OS X, InDesign is a must have for page layout. A very short learning curve particularly if you're familiar with other Adobe design softwares. Since Quark is taking their sweet time coming to the OS X table, I went ahead and tried InDesign and must say I was totally impressed. ... Read more

Adobe Type Manager Deluxe lets you organize your PostScript Type 1, OpenType, and TrueType fonts to suit the way you work. You can easily activate only the fonts or font sets you need, and then deactivate them when you're finished. Add fonts and create custom sets, and get crisp, clean output from any printer. When you create font sets for use in one-off documents, you can make them temporary by specifying that they should be deactivated or deleted from ATM Deluxe when you restart your system. For recurring document-creation jobs, you can create permanent font sets that will be automatically activated, or remain in their current state, at restart. 1-0 out of 5 stars There should be a software LAW for BUYERS
This is a bundle of junk. Unless I installed it wrong (and my husband and I are not computer/software idiots) there is no user interface. I couldn't even find the free subscription for a year to clipart.com. What a bundle of crap. Buyer beware, the only good side of this is that it was only $30. But I could have bought my children some Amazon.com books with that $30. By the way, I have Windows XP. And what really sucks is that I had to give it one star. It deserves a ZERO RATING.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not good for Mac users
This is a terrible collection. Bought it and couldn't actually get to the images. I am a Photoshop user and have some experience with image manipulation etc. and am a long time Mac user. Contacted technical support via e-mail and they told me they couldn't help me. This collection was created by a PC person and adapted to Mac. Don't buy it. Save your money and buy a good Mac collection. Returned Clip Art 2.5 Million and only got back 15 of the dollars that it cost me in the first place.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very misleading product description
Although this package is very affordable, I now know why. First off, a portion of the 2.5 million is only accessible online...for a year. Then, as I explore the various files, I find some objects are presented repeatedly, just in different colors. Wow! So, what you get is three CDs with no manual or clip art book to browse. I'll keep looking for a better collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Old version!
iLife '04 has replaced this product. Do not order iLife 1.1, order iLife '04.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most fun I've had with a computer in 2 years
Truly, what this makes easy is amazing. Photo albums and do-it-yourself coffee table books, movies, DVDs, music and more.

If you have any older i-___ apps, upgrade now to iLife. It fixes bugs and problems that formerly required work arounds...like now you can adjust the volume in movie tracks...it's elegant and so useful.

But the big advance in iLife is that it the formerly disparate media types now all work together. Laying music tracks into my home movies is a snap. The Ken Burns effect puts photos into movies with style and beauty. Then it all flows into iDVD.

We have friends who hire a computer maven to manage and edit their photos and camcorder video. I just gave them a photo book I made in iPhoto of the wife's 50th birthday party. It earned her thanks and praise. And her computer guru had never seen something so nice. It was easy and fun.

OK, it has some bugs and hangs occassionally...but crashes have never lost any of my data. Just force quit and restart the app and you're rolling again.

But it makes it easy and fun for us non-techies to make beautiful results.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not even Microsoft has stooped this low!
I am a film student trying to get some work done and what do I discover? Those lovely, FREE updates to iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie (included in this software) make it so that if you want to export from iMovie to iDVD, you have to upgrade iDVD. Now guess what the only way you can accomplish that is! By buying this software package. So, you get to spend your fifty bucks on one piece of software and the upgrades for the other 3 that are available for FREE from Apple. So basically, they screw you into buying iLife to complete the upgrade. Seriously, Microsoft isn't so underhanded!!! Shame on you, Apple!!! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Just how hard is it to build your own Web site, anyway? Theprospect--whether you're contemplating a site for business or just for fun--canbe both intimidating and tempting at the same time, even for otherwiseaccomplished professional people.

That's precisely the mindset that Macmillanhopes to satisfy with Web Page Construction Kit 6.0. Like similar WYSIWYG Webdesign packages in the same price range, this kit gives novice to moderatelyskilled users all the tools they'll need to create and manage a functional, attractive Web site without ever having to learn HTML. But the most strikingadvantage of Macmillan's Construction Kit is that it provides an easy upgradepath in case you're later inspired to take on more advanceddesign.

Essentially, the kit consists of a "light" version of SoftPress'sFreeway 3 (Freeway 3 LE), a more heavy-hitting (and much more expensive) Webdesign program that compares to Adobe's GoLive 5.0 and Macromedia's Dreamweaver4.0. Like the full version of Freeway, Freeway LE provides a robust,user-friendly interface that should be very familiar to anyone who's ever donedesktop publishing--especially in Quark Xpress 4.1, which even sharesmany keyboard shortcuts with Freeway. And the similarities go beyond appearance, with features such as strong typographic control and master pages for elementslike navigation bars and headers that stay consistent throughout a site (whichcan be an enormous time saver).

This similarity should give graphic designersa leg up in learning Freeway, but even nondesigners shouldn't find the curve toosteep. And here's the best part: should you later decide to upgrade to thefull version of Freeway (which allows you to use cascading style sheets andimport Photoshop files, among other things), SoftPress will give you as much ashalf off if you already own Freeway LE.

While Freeway LE is clearly the heartof this bundle, you'll find a few other things, too, if you give the box a goodshake. Web Page Construction Kit 6.0 comes with hundreds of professionallydesigned backgrounds, 5,000 photos, graphics, and animations, a textbook-stylemanual that includes design tips and techniques, and--seemingly tucked in as anafterthought--a nearly 500-page e-book, Creative HTML Design, a$40-value manual by well-respected Web gurus Lynda and William Weinman.--Paul Hughes ... I bought this product not realizing how extremely limiting it was. You can't change the color on the type and the amount of text you can use is only 40 characters. Let alone the sizing capabilities are limiting...........way too much to complain about, so don't buy it.

I bought this item because they advertised that they give a rebate. I submitted all the forms and the required items and they never gave me the rebate. They said that it was a duplicate. And it was surely not a duplicate. How can I send more than 1 set of original UPC and receipt. So be careful.

And in this manner, once I got into the application package itself, I was as pleased as I was with how the iMac was as much a integration of form and function.

The MacPac is described as "A Collection of Useful Applications for OS X". I'd agree. There are five programs contained within: FontManager; AppSwitch; RadicalSqueeze; MacCabinet; and, RadicalPhoto.

Initially, I pulled out the small user's manual and the CD-rom from the MacPac box. While I don't always read the manual before popping the CD-rom into my PowerBook, I stopped and perused the manual. In this case, I was very pleased by how "short and sweet" the user's manual is. Each application is listed one only one side of one page, per. Good enough, in my opinion. Each application's help and on-line help links are more than enough. I like the software developer's instinct that more would not have made the user's manual better.

My only real concern about this whole suite of programs -- at install, I would have liked to install all the programs at once! Unfortunately, each needs to be installed separately. This isn't a big deal, but a single install option would have improved my ability to get at "all" of the programs. So, I installed each application in the MacPac, and began to play.

FontManager is a nice way to review fonts, install them temporarily and/or permanently, and remove fonts as desired. While I don't generally do a lot with fonts (I have about five favorites), I appreciated the ability to look over the font TrueType formats. In general, I see this application as one I'd use only once in a great while, but when I do, its just the tool for the job.

AppSwitch is a handy way to have all open applications available in a drop down menu, from the toolbar. To a certain extent, this feature is redundant to the dock, and to the ability to "Apple-Tab" switch between open applications. But, I do find that this program might be useful if you find yourself switching between OS 9 and OS X. In this case, the AppSwitch is just familiar enough, and a fair trick. In this case, you might want to have AppSwitch open and running with log-on.

RadicalSqueeze is a quick and convenient way to compress stuff. Its options are to compress into either .zip or .tar format. Having played a little with unix in a previous life on a Sun workstation, I prefer the .tar format, but both seem to work satifactorily. This application is useful when sending files over email, or uploading files to an online directory. If you are using this program with any dial-up log-in, you will enjoy the time savings.

MacCabinet is one of those organization tools. I broke myself of keeping files on my desktop a good while ago. But, MacCabinet allows you to "pull" open a storage window (definable in the right or left side of your screen) and put/grab files from this location. Fairly simple to use, and another of those programs that, if you like it, you'd set it up to begin when you log-in. One quirk I noticed: when I started it initially, a message (which I probably misread) instructed me to go to the left side of the screen to "pull open" my cabinet window. But I found my cabinet opening on the right side of the screen. Not a real issue, because of the extremely simple way to customize the cabinet.

Finally, RadicalPhoto is one nice simple photo enhancement program. I have been using iPhoto predominately for most of my images, but sometimes, I'd like to use something a bit "more." While I have used Adobe's PhotoShop Elements, I prefer Radical Photo for both is simplicity and its price. Plus, I like the option of saving in a wide variety of formats. Finally, I had a lot of fun playing with the various effects available.

Overall, the MacPac is very nice. And I recommend it to you. As a plus, at such a low price, this collection of five programs is well worth the list price. ... Read more
