5-0 out of 5 stars Every Mac is an Island
My gal Sara bought this because she's been a Mac person forever (I'm a former Window's person, who's made the switch) and has been used to using ResEdit to design her own icons under System 7 through 9. So now she's at it again, changing, rearranging and creating icons and I have to say, it's infectious. Who says the boys in Cupertino have to have the last say on what your desktop is going to look like. Want Microsoft Word to appear as a devil on the screen. You got it. You also get a thousand free icons with the program to start. Good ones. Macs have always been unique, now they are more so. Thumbs up from me for CandyBar Plus.

4-0 out of 5 stars Digital Video Editing Becomes My Passion
Storyboard to Final Cut Express

Final Cut Express Storyboard gives me a visual look at my movie. I control-click the Final Cut Express browser and choose large icon new. Then, I drag the clips into the order that I want them to be played. Next, I click on the projectÕs tab in the Browser and save it. Finally, I save the entire project.

Now to add my new storyboard to Final Cut Express sequences. Draw a marquee around the Storyboard clips. Next, I drag the clips from my Final Cut Express Browser to my Timeline and save the project. To protect them, I can lock them to make sure that they cannot be modified. I can lock and unlock them with the F4 key for video tracks and the F5 key for audio tracks.

Working with Final Cut Express

Creating titles and credits with Express is important. The key is the Video Generator. You can create synthesized clips that you superimpose over your existing video clips in the Final Cut Express Timeline.

For good-looking titles, you can use san serif fonts such as Arial, Futura, Gill Sans, Helvetica and Impact. I have found using bold, red or blue 30 point fonts effective for my titles.

You need to watch for the 20 percent factor. The 'Title Save Boundary' is 20 percent smaller than your television screen. To see the boundaries in Final Cut Express, go to View then to Show Title. Best to keep your titles within the safe zone.

Final Cut Express allows you to create rolling credits like the credits at the end of a movie. You can set the duration of your video clips plus set the in and out points for speed of the text and scrolls.

Pro Reaction

Final Cut Express is wonderful for making storyboards, titles, transitions and effects using software digital tools. Final Cut Express 2 supports up to 99 video and audio tracks. Express has various editing tools from Ripple editing, Razor Blade Tool, Pen Tool to Slip and Slide editing.

Express allows you to import iMovie projects. You can also import your Final Cut Express project to iDVD complete with special chapter marker. Express comes with an excellent hardcopy paper manual for learning how to use Final Cut Express 2. The manual is easy to follow without computer jargon.

Con Reaction

You have to work at learning how to use the Final Cut Express application. You have to spend the time to read and work with the Final Cut Express manual.

You cannot capture DV across time-code breaks. You cannot import your Final Cut Express project to iMovie or QuickTime with chapter markers and comments.

Final Remarks

Express is better than iMovie applications and gives you professional storyboard, title and video effects. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't forget to factor in manuals to the final price.
I grew up on Adobe products. They used to include great manuals and tutorials. Now I have paid more and received less. I am trying to learn how to use GoLive but the online manual doesn't make a whole lot of sense. How come a printed manual isn't included? Oh, I have to pay more for it? How come I seem to be paying for printing costs then? Customer support? To get real help I'll have to pay for it. I used Adobe Premiere for Mac but that product got abandoned. I will not buy another Adobe product until they either give more or charge less. If you are getting started with web design I would suggest going somewhere else. That being said... Illustrator and Photoshop are both still great products and the upgrades were easy for me to understand (probably because the last versions I had included a printed manual and tutorials). Let's face it, if it wasn't for OS X, I would have just stuck to the older versions of Photoshop, Illustrator, and PageMaker and bought Dreamweaver instead. Photoshop CS - Classroom in a Book = $45. Illustrator CS - Classroom in a Book = $31.50. GoLive CS - Classroom in a Book = $45. InDesign - Classroom in a Book = $45. Acrobat Pro - Classroom in a Book = $45. $211.50 in manuals right there. Its a good product but it keeps on costing you in time and money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent design software
No software is perfect, but Adobe comes as close to well designed, intuitive, user-friendly software as I have ever seen. Photoshop and Illustrator have always been the industry standards, and here they are both improved - particularly the digital photographer will be happy with the new photo filters in Photoshop CS, and the much improved file browser and the new filter gallery are also excellent additions. As far as publishing programs are concerned, InDesign is a greatly more intuitive program than Quark at a fraction of its cost, and because its pallets function much the same as in Photoshop and Illustrator, it is an easily acquired program if you are familiar with Adobe software.

I use these programs on a Mac OS X platform and for me they are very stable. I have had none of the crashing problems or tech support difficulties that another reviewer of the Adobe Creative Suite has had. For anyone using many design programs at once, enough RAM is always a requirement for smooth operation. But if you have enough RAM and a Mac platform, you should have no significant problems at all. PCs crash more by their nature because their operating system is not as stable as a Mac's, but still Adobe products are not only more intuitive than Microsoft's (for example), they also will crash far less on a PC than most other types of software (like Microsoft's).

Photoshop and Illustrator have always defined the state of the art for photo editing and raster graphic software respectively, and here Adobe is carrying on the tradition. InDesign looks as though it is fast replacing Quark in the publishing industry as well, so if you are a creative professional you will be more than happy in the end to own the Adobe Creative Suite. What else would you use?

1-0 out of 5 stars i used to like adobe...
...then i needed to contact their technical support because illustrator crashes when you try to label layers. they go out of their way to make it as difficult as possible. no email support. instead you have to ring an area code 206 number and wait until some overworked undertrained person tells you to reinstall the product or the operating system... very helpful. just like their software.

i'll look elsewhere the next time i look for an illustration package or a graphics editor. and i won't even bother discussing their inept page layout program.

4-0 out of 5 stars glad I got it
I just bought it off of AMazon a week ago (which is the lowest price for the full version I have been able to find so far) and IM glad I did. For new people to the software, you may wanna stay with your older version for a bit and just get used to it before shelling out the money, but if your serious about design and making your workflow work to the max for you, this new collection is a must. Tight integration and the help of the version Cue additional file managment software will help even the messiest designer keep thier files inline. If design is what you want to do, then theres no better package to get. Ive been using Photoshop for years and Illustrator and Indesign for a while now and this is defenitly an inovation in design.
I gave it 4 stars due to small problems I had installing the whole suite at once. I have never had the problem with anything else and it was frustrating. But after that its smooth saling. ... Read more

67. Freehand 10.0

Asin: B00005BABU

Average Customer Review: 3 out of 5 stars
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France | Japan Review

Macromedia is certainly one of the more technologically aggressive of the major software publishers, and now they are one of the first of the big boys (if not the first) to deliver a mainstream application fully compatible with Apple's new operating system, Mac OS X.

Freehand 10 includes numerous new features in three areas: new illustration tools, improved productivity, and multiple output options such as PDF, HTML, and Flash. Freehand 10 also supports the IPTC header file information for services that take advantage of such information, such as Knight Ridder and the Associated Press.

Illustrators will love "true contour gradients," a new feature that helps create the most realistic shading we've seen in a 2-D illustration program. Create gradients of irregular shapes, control the amount of shading at any point, and use multicolor gradients.

Freehand's improved pen tool now looks and behaves exactly the same as it does in Flash and Fireworks. In fact, the whole Freehand interface now looks, feels, and behaves just like other Macromedia products, while still managing to look like whatever platform it's running on. For example, Freehand under Mac OS 9 looks like a classic Mac app, but the same app takes on the Aqua interface when running under OS X.

Freehand 10 targets users who create material for print and the Web. Flash export, in the form of SWF files, has been improved, and conversely, a designer can now import Flash actions and assign them to objects in Freehand. Also, Freehand now has a Flash runtime engine complete with controller panel, so that Flash actions and files destined for SWF export can now be tested within Freehand.

For those who create multiple-page documents, Freehand's Master Pages can be used to manage a 32,000-page document, sharing templates and page attributes while retaining the ability to edit master pages at any time. Child pages update dynamically when a master page is changed.

For Mac OS X users, launching a major app like Freehand without first starting up the Classic environment is a real thrill. The native OS X interface is a nice complement to Freehand, and it makes us anxious to see other Macromedia products running under X. Freehand 10 is an important upgrade for existing users, and for new ones, numerous new features make it easier to learn than ever. --Mike Caputo ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay with 9...or 8
As a long-time Freehand user, MacroMedia continues to disappoint. Hardy anything new, yet commands are different and it is much slower than the previous version (which itself was slower than the previous version).

MacroM has abandoned the print market anyway; I believe this is their last release of FreeHand. Its too bad, since it used to be a fine program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing!
Simply an amazing work of art. It's actually kind of sad how much Macromedia has us wrapped around it's genius little finger. If you're into vector graphics, this is your buy. Since, Illustrator 10 is bugged and Freehand is compatible with FLash, a new king shall rise.

All hail Freehand 10!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No Need to Buy Any Other Graphics Software
I work with graphics as a profession and I've been using CorelDRAW since version 2.1. I've never had to buy anything else.

Sure, if you've been using Illustrator or another vector graphics program, you may have to get used to the interface but there is nothing you can't do with CorelDRAW. In fact, I'd venture to say there are probably lots of things CorelDRAW will do that other programs will not.

But what really blows me away about CorelDRAW is the fact it's bundled with a bitmap graphics program every bit as good as Photoshop. Though a great deal of what I do involves bitmap graphics, I don't have a need for Photoshop. Corel PhotoPaint will do everything Photoshop will do--and it comes bundled with CorelDRAW! Anyone who doubts me should try the package if you can.

5-0 out of 5 stars CorelDRAW kicks Illustratror's ... any day!
In 1990, I took a computer certificate program and one of the applications I learned was CorelDRAW [ver. 1] -- a new vector drawing program made by a little Canadian company that set out to show that the graphics industry didn't need to revolve around Adobe or MACs.

I have successfully used CorelDRAW on a daily basis in commercial print shops and more. I have sent my projects to third party printers with no production problems because CorelDRAW is able to save to so many "acceptable" file formats to satisfy anyone.

I have seen CorelDRAW grow and mature from version 1 to version 11 and I still say it beats Illustrator hands down, not only for its ease of learning and intuitive interface, but for value of dollar. Many features that Illustrator has only recently introduced in its Version 10, CorelDRAW had already implemented several versions earlier.

No, I'm not a Corel Corp employee. I'm simply a consumer that loves CorelDRAW, has used it professionally for over 10 years with consistent, high quality results and has shown others the value of this remarkable program.

If I was stranded on a deserted island with a laptop and my choice of one program, CorelDRAW would be my choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Graphic Supervisor
We have used Corel Draw now since version 9 and find that Corel 11 is by and far away easier, more productive than Illustrator or Freehand. We have 9 designers all of which were Illustrator users until we started with Corel 9 and now the fabulous Corel 11. There simply is no better illustration program and I can assure you that I speak for our whole staff. I only wish I held Corel stock..............

2-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Disappointed
As a die-hard user of CorelDraw and Photo-Paint since way back to Version 6, I recently (and excitedly) made the jump to Version 11. Corel graphics apps have always been easy to use, comprehensive, and stable. But not anymore...
Since installing Corel 11, it's become painfully obvious that the jump was a major mistake. On a machine that includes the Macromedia MX Suite, Photoshop 7, and AutoCAD LT 2004, the Corel Graphics Suite 11 has been an unstable, bug-ridden, resource hogging pain in the proverbial behind. I built my computer, and it's a finely tweaked, blazing fast, graphics demon. And of course, all of my other graphics programs work just fine on it. But not Corel 11. Until Corel actually addresses the endless number of serious flaws and bugs in this latest suite, I cannot recommend it to anyone.
The only reason I didn't give Version 11 just (1) star is because of the simple fact that Photo-Paint is easily the most underrated photo-editing/bitmap creation software on the planet.
(When it's actually working right!) There's not anything that I can do in Photoshop that I can't do in Photo-Paint; and I do it all at a fraction of Adobe's ridiculously high price. (I only own Photoshop because certain clients expect it.)
Unfortunately, the new Corel 11 has me using Photoshop a lot more these days, and using Photo-Paint 8 on a W98 machine.

In summation, one reviewer said it best... this one's definitely "dead out of the box".

2-0 out of 5 stars Once again, Corel fails to provide a competent OS X product
I've been a CorelDraw/PhotoPaint user since Version 8. I used it on a PC, on a dual 200 MHz Pentium system, and found it to be a very useful and stable product.

Now I am working on a Mac and this has all changed. I bought v11 hoping that they had eliminated at least some of the problems in v10. Nope. The constant crashes are still there. It crashes if you Undo a Fill, it crashes if you import an EPS file...on and on. It is MORE crash prone than v10. I am working on an iBook, and all my other apps are rock solid. Except CorelDraw. Furthermore, the software is god-awful slow on an iBook. Maybe a dual G5 would give you some performance, but my dual p200 was faster that this.

Also, the PhotoPaint scripting that allowed you to make movies and do other useful things is gone. Completely gone, and I understand it was removed from the PC version as well, for GOD KNOWS what reason. Why, o why, does Corel think it is progress to REDUCE the functionality of your software?

If you liked the old versions, you are not missing anything. Stick with v9. If you are working on a Mac, do yourself a favor and find a different tool. Corel is not making any advances here, they are not fixing bugs, and they are not going anywhere. It's a very unfortunate end to what used to be a very nice piece of software. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mac Fonts
Was pretty excited when I saw the fonts package. The box said "Over 1000 TrueType fonts" I figured that it meant just subtle variations of the same. While this was true for the majority of the fonts, the "BN" set of fonts had the most variety.

The little quick reference guide book was very helpful with letting you get a peek at what the fonts look like to see if you
even want to load it on your system. The book however was at times a little confusing, the names of the fonts would be on top of the fonts for some and then under the fonts for others. You had to kind of double check that the one that you wanted was the one that you installed.

Played with some of the fonts in LiveType and I had a blast. Since I kind of wanted to see the fonts in action I would look through the book then choose a font to load. For it to take effect I had to keep restarting LiveType for the font to show up. So after a while just loaded a bunch of them and then made some scrolling text. Had lots of fun with the "Xmas Lights BRK" & "New Year Dingbats". Being able to take just the dingbats and alter them on screen give rise to lots of new and creative ways for me to make my designs a bit more fun and have very different appeal. There were also some more down to earth fonts like
"Boron" & "Teen Bold" that gives a bit more punch than "Times New Roman" but still not be to off putting. Also previewed the fonts in TextEdit to get a feel for the differences quickly.

All in all really liked what the package had to offer even with the limited font manager and having to load each individual font. The variety of new fonts is worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a font collection for Mac!

As a font editing and creation tool, Macromedia's Fontographer4.1 can go a long way toward creating the myriad fonts digital artistsneed to accomplish the right look for each project. It provides theability to create custom fonts, either by freehand drawing, usingdrawing tools, or by importing images to use as templates.

At itsheart, it is a vector drawing application designed to build fonts. Themain drawing window features the usual selection of vector drawingtools, but it also has guidelines for drawing ascending and descendingletter shapes and for ensuring even letter spacing. There's also a verynice freehand calligraphy drawing pen with pressure sensitivity fordrawing strokes manually.

If you aren't up to creating your own fontfrom scratch, you can import an existing font and modify it by changingletter shapes, kerning, tracking, etc. Each shape has a set of controlpoints that can be tweaked and curved.

Fontographer isstraightforward in use, and an ideal tool for the extremely dedicatedartist who wants full control over everything. However, one of the bestparts of the package is not the software, but the manual itself. "UsingFontographer" is nearly 350 pages of information not only on how to usethe program, but on designing fonts themselves. Good font design is notto be taken lightly, and the manual/information guide is chock full oftips and guides and information on how to create quality fonts.

Ifyou can't find the right font for the job, or you have a burning desireto learn the difference between a font, face, and family, Fontographermight be the tool you are looking for. --Mike Caputo ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fontographer's great but...
I have been using Fontographer for 5 years or more. In our part of the world (the South Pacific) there are numerous languages which have multiple vowels (e.g. Maori has 10 and Samoan has 20). These occur to lengthen a vowel by adding a macron above, to create a micro-pause (glottal) by adding a close single quote before and combinations of these. Creating special typefaces with these characters and making special linguisitic characters for dictionaries and academic books have been our major uses.

Fontographer has been wonderful. It has allowed us to do things we couldn't any other way. I have constantly been surprised at the power of the program and wished I could have more time to play with it.

BUT. As proprietor of a design and typesetting business I am used to purchasing and using a wide variety of graphic & layout software and fonts. Fontographer is showing its age in comparison. It no longer conforms to accepted standards for interfaces. It is unstable in the modern environment (I have to turn off every extension but the most basic to run it). And it hasn't been upgraded since Adam was a boy. I fear that it will become completely incompatible with a modern operating system soon and then I will have to abandon it. Premasked photo objects are useful design tools because you do not have to create transparencies; the images are precut from their original context, making it easier to drag and drop the images into any design in seconds. Since the object is professionally masked from the initial rectangular background, the photo object maintains the quality of a photo but has the flexibility of clip art. 2-0 out of 5 stars Beware - Know what you buy
If you think that the claims made by the manufacturer actually come through and you are purchasing high quality images, think again. Although they offer a money back guarantee if you don't like the collection (shipping is on you), all too many images are blurred by an "artistic" coating that makes them unusable. Then they show you the real image in tiny slides. If you really want the "good" picture, you have to go to their web site and buy it... There are some images you can actually use in the package, but not nearly as many as they claim! I found some 350 variations of ONE picture (1 easter egg). The search engine is really buggy, but they offer an update online.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just as good as Photo Objects 50K Vol I
After reading the previous reviews, I almost decided not to purchase Volume II. However, I decided that I liked Volume I so much that I'd take a chance. I am so glad that I did. Volume II works seamlessly with Volume I, so I am able to see all 100K images at the same time. Just as Vol. I has, the book of color thumbnails is excellent, but I never use it because I can see all of the thumbnails on the computer. I have XP, and it took a phone call to Hemera to figure out the totally non-intuitive way to get it to work with XP, but it's definitely worth it. The images are varied and clear, and beats any other clip art package I've ever seen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too much of the same stuff but still worth it.
As stated on the other reviews, I agree that this package has way too much repeated images. Expect to see over 232 balloons(some in same colors too!), and countless pictures of eggs.
This package needs heavy image editing. I have a feeling the package will end up half the size if all the repeated images were taken out.
Good side to this is that it is very affordable. Though it has a lot of repeats it is worth having. There are still lot of selections to choose from. Just dig dig and dig.

The search engine works very well. It¡¯s pretty easy to locate images with it.
If you have about extra 4.27GB of space in your computer, I strongly recommend copying all the images from 8 CDs to your hard drive for ease of use. Or else, it will constantly ask you to put in different CD each time you are looking for a different image. I don¡¯t know how it's organized but let¡¯s say you are looking for a rose(just an example), 3 out of 5 rose will be on one CD and the rest will be in the other CD. It¡¯s a pain to keep changing CD¡¯s.
For window XP users, you do have to download the latest upgrade from Hemera website.
Personally I think Hemera Photo-Objects 50K Vol I has more interesting selection of images than Vol II.
Either way, if you are a designer this will be pretty nice package to own.

5-0 out of 5 stars A designer's dream product!
As I went to look for photo objects for my firm, I saw two people standing there holding a box of Hemera's Photo Objects. I couldn't help but tell these two people that the product is worth buying. They have their own design studio and Hemera Photo Objects Volume II is definitely worth owning!

For my business, Hemera's products have saved me a lot of time and money. With Volume 2 of the series, it featured an OS X version which I have been looking for and the search for photo objects in different categories is a blessing.

This review is for the updated version for OS X for my MAC G4.

The new search engine works beautifully and the program will first install the thumbnails (I recommend having quite a bit of drive space... If you are a graphic designer, I'm assuming that you do already). Thus when you type a word, you will see the thumbnails correspond to that word. Those that are bright and colored are for the version you own, if it's faded - those photos are from the other version (in this case VERSION I) that you may want to purchase.

I have had the chance to read the reviews on this product and here's the nitty gritty. For those who are professionals and non-professionals who are looking for photo objects that are non hi-res (600x600) with the option to save as 300DPI, you will love this program.

For designers - To get the best use for these images for bigger print sizes, I save the files as a transparent PNG, instead of TIF when I need to get the image for a project utilizing a larger dimension. Work with your desktop publishing program and export to EPS and then use your Distiller to make the PDF.

If you want a very hi-res version of the photo object, then you will need to purchase it from the company. There are many awesome photos in this collection. With 50,000 images...that is a lot. Sure, there are multiple ones of the same photo but my gosh...for the price. You can't beat that - for many stock photos, it cost $[money]+ for 100 photos. In this case, 50,000 for less than a $[money].

I can't comment on the PC version of this software but for those using the new operating system for the MAC, make sure that you find out that it is the OS X compatible version (the OS X logo on the front of the box).

Do I have a gripe? Not really. If anything, after seeing the photos that are faded out in the search box (the photos for Version I, which I definitely want to buy it now), I wish I picked up Version I as well. And that's definitely what I'm going to do next.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hemera Photo-Objects Vol I Costumers: buy the Vol II !
I've bought Photo-Objects Vol I and waited to buy Vol II. When you install the search engine of Vol I, you have the option of displaying Vol II photos or not. Just turn it on and discover what you're missing... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh my friggin' weasels ...
This program is a superior value for the money. The output is well above its ancestor (Raydream Studio 5.5). The interface is very simple (even easier than Poser).

It has two drawbacks. First, the manual is in PDF format on disk (this always sucks). Second, there is a limit on image size (think about using it for web page graphics, only).

The Eovia website does NOT do this program true justice. However, they hide the fact that it will only make web graphics. feh. BUY IT ANYWAYS. When I think of those sad dorks using POVray, my heart swells with pity ... I can do in ten minutes what used to take hours of blood, sweat and tweaking.

It takes some brains to make 3D graphics, so don't get too discouraged. Once you get past the learning curve, though, oh man ... it's a sweet, sweet little package for creating 3D graphics and even animations.

1-0 out of 5 stars Extremely hard to use -- no manual included
Even though I have 10 years experience in programming and a grappics background, I found this program extremely hard to use.It was easier to learn how to speak Drench than it was to use this sadist piece of software.

The misleading features list on the back of the box makes everything sound to easy to create, but I found it near impossible to do anything constructive with this program without seeminly spending hours upon hours to try and figure out how to use it.

If you can make the program do what is says on the back of the box, then you're probably also able to put together a car transmission blindfolded too.

Can you read minds? There is no printed manual included, only a cheesy in-program manual that is of no help and doesn't explain the various features or how to use them.Unless you wrote the program or have a mathematics degree, you probably do NOT want to buy this program.

Worse, I could not return it, because software is generally not returnable once you open it.

Oh well, now I have a ... coaster for my desk! And a renewed desire to check out software reviews BEFORE I plunk down my hard-earned cash on a piece of poorly designed software.

3-0 out of 5 stars great start off
Add's textures and models helps u get started

5-0 out of 5 stars In terms of value, best productivity suite available
Like some of the other reviewers, I'm rather surprised at the number of negative reviews that Appleworks has received. While it is true that Appleworks is not as powerful as Microsoft Office, it is much less expensive and clearly represents a better value. The word processer part of it (the part that most people will use) is more intuitive and easier to use than Microsoft Word. True, Word is more powerful; but it costs $350 and requires a manual to use. I have never needed to use a manual to use Appleworks. You have complete control of your documents and you don't have to summon up the help application to figure out how to do common tasks like formatting paragraphs or adding links. Those who have mastered the complexities of MS Word and who require its special features may not like Appleworks. But for the rest of us, it more than meets our needs.

Also, one thing more: I have never had any trouble with Appleworks' translators from cwk to word format. I'm not sure why so many people have reported having trouble with it. I translated an entire book from Appleworks to PC MS Word, preserving the formats and special lettering instructions without any trouble at all. In any case, this wouldn't be a problem if people would show more courtesy to non-MS users (Macs and Linux) and not insist on sending them doc formatted files. PDF and rtf are far better cross-platform alternatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's not to like?
Ok, I'm am sure that there are features in Word or Excel that some of you might use and the key word is might, but for the other 98% of us. Apple Works is a complete program that is full featured and easy to use. It can save and all of latest Microsoft Office file formats and that is half the battle most of the time with some of the attachments that I receive. Other than that I've been using it for about two months now and it has done everything that I have asked it to do and done it with ease. I have no problems with crashing or quiting unexpectedly under OS X. I start it and it runs and runs and runs. It's a great value even if just to open and looks at an Excel spreadsheet or Word doucument.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Value Suite of Software
I have been using computer word processors extensively since 1986. In 2001, I switched from being primarily a PC user to being a Mac user. And Appleworks is one of the programs I use the most.

I cannot understand the reviews on this page which slam Appleworks (especially the OSX version) for not being compatible with MS Word. I covert files back and forth from PC to Mac with no problem whatsoever. The best printer I have access to is on a PC at work. I usually write documents at home, convert them to a MS Word document, and email them to myself at work. Then at work the next day I print them. No problem.

There seems to be one glitch if you save files as a rich text file. The translator doesn't know the following characters: " '

But if you save it as a MS Word for Windows 98, 2000, ME file, you don't have this problem.

Apple, keep up the good work. The average Joe or Jane should not have to pay hundreds upon hundreds of dollars to get a solid word processor.

1-0 out of 5 stars AppleWorks is crap
I have hoped and prayed for a Microsoft alternative. Unfortunately it is a Microsoft world, if you want to communicate with that world on a Mac use Office for Mac, it is brilliant. As much as I tried to move towards Works, I purchased it first, I could not, the spread sheet program in Works alone leaves you on a deserted island.

Save your headaches if you share any files than jump up to Office for Mac, however much that disgusts me to admits, it is a superior product.

1-0 out of 5 stars why upgarde
Editorial review claims Appleworks 6 will translate Word documents with Dataviz translator. Last phrase is the key. Appleworks 6 does no more translation than did Appleworks 5. If you want to manage in the PC world, either buy a PC or buy Dataviz Maclink Plus. Appleworks 6 offers nothing special for compatibility in spite of the misleading editorial review. ... Read more

79. Mathcad 6 Plus Professional

Mathcad PLUS 6.0 lets you use real math notation all the time--with an interactive, visual interface--to set up, analyze, solve, and document all kinds of technical problems.

With Mathcad PLUS 6.0, you get a new set of built-in procedural operators you can use to build your own functional programs right in your Mathcad worksheet. Just click on the operators to define local variables, loops, branches, nested data structures, and recursive functions. And in practically no time, you'll be creating programs that operate on scalars, vectors, matrices, and more.

These operators are not only integrated into Mathcad's user interface, but they're also "live." Change any data, variable, or function on which they depend, and the result is automatically recalculated. And they use real math notation. What's more, because they're visual, you can instantly see the effect of looping and branching. They can also include or be part of any Mathcad expression. And they can depend on the result of any prior computation -- numeric or symbolic.

With Mathcad PLUS 6.0, you can also define your own notation by creating operators with arguments that compute. Just connect the math symbols from any Windows font to your own Mathcad functions. Then, for example, you can build standard logic operators or operators for convolution, function composition, or finding the derivative at a point.

Statistics are important to just about everyone who works with technical calculations. And with Mathcad PLUS 6.0, you'll be able to perform hypothesis testing and build models with probabilistic components. Mathcad PLUS 6.0 includes a set of 16 of the most common statistical distributions, including chi-square, F, t, uniform, normal, binomial, Poisson, beta, Cauchy, exponential, gamma, geometric, log-normal, logistic, negative binomial, and Weibull. A regression function has been added for polynomial curve and surface fitting, while the existing linear regression has been extended to perform multivariate linear regression. And four new data smoothing functions--median smooth, Loess, supsmooth and ksmooth--have been added for advanced data analysis.

With the new visualization tools in Mathcad PLUS 6.0, you'll be able to look at your work in some helpful new ways. Three new graph types have been added: vector, 3-D bar, and 3-D scatter plots. Backplanes and new axis options are now available for 3-D graphs. You can also use the new animation capabilities to bring your work to life, animating graphs, numerical results, and images. This means you can view systems over time or as any other variable changes. And you can export animations as standard Windows AVI files. What's more, you can import bitmap images into your worksheets as matrices and manipulate them with all of Mathcad's functionality.

Graphs are also easier to create and format. There's even an updated graphics dialog box that gives you true interactive graphics capabilities. Want to change a graph from 3-D scatter to contour? Just change the graph type and hit the Apply button. And because the dialog box remains on screen, it's easy to modify your graph again and again until you find the best way to analyze your data and present your solutions.

Mathcad PLUS 6.0 lets you put "live" equations right into text areas. You can also highlight text in color to bring attention to key points. Justify and center text for a more effective presentation. And for full word processing capabilities, you can export your complete Mathcad worksheets to Microsoft Word.

New QuickSheets give you lots of shortcuts that help you learn new features in just a few quick steps. They remind you how to use features you've forgotten about. They offer shortcuts in analyses you use often. They're called QuickSheets, and they're one of the most useful new tools built into Mathcad PLUS 6.0.

Let's say you want to use the new polynomial regression function. There's a QuickSheet to show you how. Just change a few parameters, copy the QuickSheet into your own worksheet, and you're done. Or maybe you need help creating an x-y plot. There's another QuickSheet for that. In all, Mathcad has over 100 QuickSheets, and they're just a mouse click away, meaning less time leafing through the user's manual and more time solving problems.

In addition to the QuickSheets, there are new online help Tooltips that appear when you move the cursor over a button. New toolbars you can move around on screen can customize the look of your Mathcad environment. A new 3-D look and feel make this the most usable Mathcad ever.

To collaborate with clients, colleagues, and associates, just click on the palette and you can transmit your Mathcad worksheets and analyses across most major e-mail systems -- including Microsoft Mail and cc:Mail.

You can link directly to the World Wide Web to find Mathcad worksheets that are relevant to just about any problem you're working on. This means you have access to analyses performed not just by people within your company, but by colleagues in other organizations, including top universities. And it's all in real math notation.

Using Mathcad PLUS 6.0, you can now create documents with hyperlinks to other documents. What's more, links between Mathcad worksheets can point to other Mathcad worksheets stored locally in a Web server. Just double-click on the link, and Mathcad will take you to the linked worksheet--wherever it is.

There's just one barrier that has been added: To improve both security and quality control, MathSoft enabled you to create locked sections in Mathcad PLUS 6.0 with optional passwords. The locks display a date and time stamp so you can know at a glance when the section was last reviewed. That means you can share critical documents with others in your organization and feel confident that key equations are unchangeable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Call MAthSoft and ask one question before you buy!
There is a program called "C_DILLA" that Mathsoft has seen fit to install in a hidden file on some of its products. Just do a web search under the keywords

"C_DILLA", "Mathcad", and "spyware" (or any combination with C_DILLA in there. You will get a lot of information.)

Call MathSoft and MAKE SURE that this earlier Mathcad version does not install C_DILLA on your system.

If C_DILLA is installed, then I suggest you do web search on the effects that C_DILLA has on your CD burner.

You have been warned.

If C_DILLA is not part of this program, then buy it. Mathcad is the best of its genre. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Quark: move aside!
InDesign CS is perhaps the application that benefited most from the most recent upgrade that Adobe made to its key applications, bringing a load of useful and highly expected features and built to take advantage of all the system enhancements that OSX Panther has to offer. I'd like to stress ONE feature, though, that blew me away... two words: NESTED STYLES. If you have suffered through the painful process of laying out a document where more than two styles are required in a particular content block, you will shed tears of joy when you see this at work!

You are bound to also find very handy the enhanced table features such as automated running headers and footers for tables that run across multiple linked text frames. Printers (people in the printing industry) are also going to be happy (or so Adobe wants) with the features that have been included in InDesign CS for them.

All in all, if I were Quark, I'd be shaking because InDesign is not going to stop until it takes over the current market share that QuarkXpress has... it's just a matter of time and perhaps a version or two more. But try CS now: I think you will love it! ... Read more
