4-0 out of 5 stars Adobe makes a great product
This is a very nice, relatively smooth upgrade, I haven't had any major issues. The new filters pallette is very nice to work with - it saves a good amount of time allowing you to apply mulitple transformations within one window.

The isues that I have had:

- it does crash in XP when using the right mouse click to "open file with"...it works much better if the program is opened first and then the file is opened ...I haven't upgraded my Mac yet, so I'm not sure if the situation with be the same on the OSX platform.

- this is very minor but the pixel aspect ratio is set for video when I open a Bitmap-TIFF ...it's a file type that the computer somehow sees as a preview for video, but it's a simple fix - just change the pixel aspect ration view back to square ...I must admit the first time it happened and my image loaded looking all squished, I got that curious dog look on my face, cocked my head to the side wondering "what the heck is this?"

- Some of my files which are 250MB working in 7.0 seem to be exploding to 400MB in CS... this is something which I haven't been able to trace or figure out just yet, but it does cause significant problems for working speed ...I only have 1.3GB of RAM which is fine for a 250MB drawing but not sufficient for a 400MB drawing. I'll have to delve deeper into the software to see if I can figure this one out.

Overall, it seems like a fine upgrade, but as with most upgrades there are some issues/surprises when you make the switch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Upgrade for Digital Photographers
Adobe's newest release of Photoshop, is great news for digital photographers amongst others. This version now brings 16-bit suport to Photoshop. That means that we can now work with RAW camera files with full support of most Photoshop tools. The changes are more behind the scenes than they are cosmetic. Being able to customize your own keyboard shortcuts is a big timesafer. You can't go wrong with this upgrade! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Inconsistent and not compatible with OSX
I just installed OSX, and Quark is not able to work in the way it used to. However, even before OSX, it doesn't work in the same manner from file to file.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very buggy!
I've lost countless hours of work to this software! Many documents, when reopened, look different than when I saved them! What's up with that?

5-0 out of 5 stars Takes some getting used to, but it's great!
It took me a few months, but I finally stopped complaining that they'd screwed up XPress. Version 4.1 is light years beyond version 3.3. And, it's a whole lot better than 4.0. The new features make this program a pleasure to work with. The user interface is more intuitive than ever. And, it still beats PageMaker and InDesign by a mile.

5-0 out of 5 stars good stuff

Amazon.com Review

While Adobe Illustrator has traditionally been reserved for the printand prepress marketplace, recent versions have targeted a broader audience, including a growing contingent of new-school Web designers. With the latestincarnation of Illustrator, Adobe aims to please both print and prepressdesigners, as well as cutting-edge Web designer communities. If you're lookingfor a greater Web focus from your vector graphics program, look no further thanIllustrator 10.

For those concerned about Illustrator becoming too Web focused, don't fret. Allof Illustrator's previously existing drawing and text tools remain intact.Version 10 also introduces improved tools for drawing lines, arcs, and grids. These new drawing tools will maximize your productivity and provide an easy wayto create the shapes you want.

In addition to the new drawing tools, Adobe has jumped on the graphics symbolbandwagon by allowing users to save any text object or graphic object as asymbol. Once objects are saved in the Symbol palette, they can be reusedinfinitely, thus providing easier management of files and decreased file size.Users will fall in love with the simple drag-and-drop usability of the symbols, while the newly added Symbol Sprayer lets you easily add multiple instances of asymbol directly into the document.

Adobe has also undertaken the task of minimizing the monotony of tedious andrepetitive design tasks. By taking advantage of Illustrator-supported scriptinglanguages, users can easily automate repetitive tasks by writing scriptsdirectly in Illustrator. Any of the three popular scripting languages--VisualBasic Script, JavaScript, or AppleScript--can be used. When creating a design, users can assign a text object or graphic object to a variable. These variablescan then pull information from any ODBC-compliant database. With this type ofpower, users can easily create templates for documents such as Web pages orproduct catalogs.

In this latest version of Illustrator 10, Adobe has managed to enhance itsexisting drawing tools with powerful productivity aids. By focusing on importantworkflow, productivity, and database-connectivity features, Adobe has given theuser more time to explore new creative possibilities. --Rich Ting ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars possibly the definitive drawing program
Illustrator is probably the BEST product around for anyone seriously creating drawings and artwork on a computer. It packs in all the usual features, Bezier curves, color models, line and artwork control, and it has dozens of nifty new features. These include a powerful macro facility (direct or via Applescript), a rubber stamp like "symbol" facility, artistic styles that can be applied to surfaces, filtering "effects", gradient meshes for creating shaded surfaces, and the ability to define your own keyboard shortcuts.

Yes, it has a serious learning curve. No, it is not a paint program. Yes, it has some flaws and a few bugs. No, you still have to have some artistic ability to use it.

I've tried Freehand, Expression, Corel Draw and several other rivals. They are not bad programs, but they lack the completeness, the immediacy, and the sense of control that you get in Illustrator. If you are serious, you would be hard pressed to do better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, but not without flaws
Seeing as the other "review" here is not particularly helpful or easy on the eyes, I figured I'd write a brief one of my own that will hopefully be useful to someone. :)

Illustrator is, simply, an extremely powerful piece of software. It has some amazing features, both in terms of power and in terms of usability. There are multiple ways to do just about everything, depending on what suits your style of working. You could also spend hours customizing the interface and setting things up the way you like (this could be a pro or a con, depending on how much you value your productivity).

While Illustrator gets high marks for raw power, there is one area where Adobe needs to improve it: stability. I've experienced a few crashes running it under Mac OS X, often while doing very simple operations (i.e. switching between Illustrator and another running task). Illustrator is not multitasking friendly, from my experience. It also doesn't seem to take very good advantage of having a dual processor machine, which is a bit of a shame.

Honestly, though, the stability issues are not enough to warrant less than 5 stars for Illustrator. You can do some amazing stuff with this software, given enough time to learn how to harness all the tools... and given the creative talent to do them justice. Artistic ability not included. :)

1-0 out of 5 stars Product doesn't live up to the hype
I bought this product based on what I thought were some good looking images on the box, but once I opened it... Yuck! If you want some really great clip art, best go to a site like Artzooks.com, where you can at least preview the images, buy and download only the images you need.

1-0 out of 5 stars Watch out Mac G5 owners ....
I just got a Mac G5 with 2 GB of RAM and was looking forward to using this product. I would have to agree that from the book most of the clipart contained in this set is cartoonish, but my worst complaint is that I just couldn't install it. On install all you'll get is a window stating you don't have enough RAM and fail to continue.

Nova Development software support wasn't any help either. They were VERY familiar with the problem and the tech made it clear that a fix would NOT be coming out anytime in the near future. He immediately gave me the phone # to call and get a refund ... and I'll use it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but still lacking
I bought this book mainly hoping I could find good illustrations of a diverse selection of people. I find that most of those illustrations are too cartoonish for editorial use, and don't show much variety. The high resolution photos were of no use either as they are actually only "medium" resolution. They would be great for web usage but not for print. Also, I wasn't able to use the electronic image catalog and was unable to search the photographs effectively since the file names are not descriptive.
If you're looking for illustrations of things rather than people, then this is a good source. The vector images are well organized and the print catalog is easy to use. Overall, I'd say this is a good product, but I don't think it offers much more than the 525,000 or 600,000 image versions.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ton of clip-art.... good quality (great for the price)
You really can't beat the price on this set of clip-art. Many of the graphics are low quality vector illustrations which I wouldn't use... but the portion that is usable is well worth the price. The photos included are mostly useless for a serious graphic designer like myself. Most are 72dpi and many are poorly taken photographs. All of the business and people photos are outdated by about 10 - 15 years going by the clothing and equipment. The photos are not searchable by key word... you have to browse (which is very time consuming). Don't get me wrong - if you're looking for one set of clip-art that has just about everything, this is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars All You Need
I used this collection when I worked at a major college newspaper. I never got tired of browsing the discs and I always found perfect images for ads. It has everything. The antique images are great, as are the photographs. I can't stress how many images this thing has! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Didn't Meet Expectations
I've been using Illustrator for over three years now... from 9.0 to 10.0 and now CS. While Illustrator does seem to perform faster and it does include the ability to create 3-D objects (which is pretty neat), I was very disappointed with one particular thing. The text now does not display as it should while I'm working on my artwork. Some of my fonts seemed to "bleed", while other fonts just weren't displayed correctly (the height and/or width seemed off). When I print or save the art for the web the results look as they should, but it's really annoying that I can't truly see what the text is going to look like unless I print or view the jpeg/gif file. I'm seriously considering going back to version 10. Not only does it display my artwork exactly as I should expect to see it printed or on the web, but now Flash MX 2004 (another recent upgrade) has supposedly been made to be compatible with Illustrator 10.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adobe Illustrator CS for Macintosh
Adobe's new Illustrator CS brings significant improvements to an already great vector art software. I was quite impressed with Illustrator 10's improvements, and wasn't sure what new features Adobe would put into its next version. Plenty, as it turns out. Here are some new features of Illustrator CS (actually v. 11):

Faster Performance
Illustrator CS is noticeably faster opening, saving, and printing files than its predecessor Illustrator 10. Artwork displays faster, and copying and pasting is speedier.

Expanded Print Capabilities
With Illustrator CS' upgraded print engine you can now achieve fast, consistent, print results with features like Fit to Page, Print Preview, and support for Print settings. These features appear to put Illustrator CS on par with Adobe Acrobat in regard to setting file compression and printing control.

Font Style Display
In its drop-down Font selection menu, Illustrator CS now shows fonts available in your Mac in their actual style. No more guessing how they might look before you select from a list of font names.

Enhanced Adobe PDF file creation
When saving an Illustrator CS document as a PDF file a menu now displays settings and options that are quite similar to Adobe Acrobat Distiller software. This allows making precise adjustments for file compression, adding printer's marks, and setting PDF document security. A convenient feature is that newly created Illustrator PDF's are then auto-launched in Acrobat 6 for immediate review.

Adobe PDF layers support
Similar to PhotoShop, Illustrator lets artwork be created over numerous electronic layers with individual control of the contents contained on each layer. That's not particularly new, however, layered artwork in Illustrator CS saved as a PDF can now be displayed or hidden within Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional.

How might this be useful? One example could be that you need to e-mail a drawing to a client showing multiple design options for a building drawn on different layers in Illustrator. The client won't likely have Illustrator, but will have a copy (or can get a free download) of Acrobat Reader 6. With a multi-layer PDF file the client can turn on, or off, layers to display your different design options.

3D Effects
I love this new feature! From 2-D objects and text you can create custom 3-D shapes and type treatments, add lighting, and then wrap artwork around shapes for packaging mock-ups. The new 3-D features incorporate elements of Adobe's long abandoned Dimensions 3.1 which, while promising, was clunky and rather frustrating to use.

Prior to Illustrator CS, I usually created 3-D static objects by first importing a very basic Illustrator EPS drawing into an expensive 3-D animation program. From there I would perform an Extrude (adding depth to the object) or a Lathe (wrapping the EPS drawing around a center line), rotate the object to a desired angle in the XYZ planes, position the artificial light source(s), and then map artwork to the various surfaces to create the finished product. Now I can do all of that in Illustrator CS. Thank you, Adobe! I'll be interested to see how this feature matures in future versions of Illustrator.

Illustrator's 3-D features come with a price, however. Running this program on my 15", 800 Mhz, G4 iMac required patience as each time a 3-D object was moved or resized on the electronic canvas there was a finger-drumming wait for the vector recalculations to complete. Of course faster Macs (especially the G5's) will mean less wait time with Illustrator 3-D objects.

Video Tour Of New Features
Included with Illustrator CS is a very informative CD video tutorial from Total Training featuring well-known software book author and presenter Deke McClelland. He jumps right into explaining the 3-D features of Illustrator CS, followed by tutorials on the program's built-in filters, font features, printing controls, and exports to PDF and Microsoft Office.

Tighter Microsoft Office integration
When you choose "Save for Microsoft Office" under the File Menu, Illustrator CS exports artwork as a PNG file format which makes it optimized to print and display in Microsoft Office products. Frankly, I'm not so impressed with this feature-but it's probably not Adobe's fault.

Of the applications in the Microsoft Office application suite I use PowerPoint the most. Inserting a PNG (or other raster formats) is fine as long as the background in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint is white. In these Microsoft products all pixel-based images display with a white square or rectangular bounding box-no matter the actual shape of the artwork. In PowerPoint you can use Microsoft's "Set Color Transparency" command to make the unwanted white of the bounding box become transparent so the background shows through. Unfortunately, there remains a white "fringing" all around the artwork boundary.

If Illustrator had a vector graphic export format that would be the same as the vector clip art Microsoft provides for use in its Office products, you would really have something. Vector art from Illustrator, brought into MS Office software, could be scaled up or down in size with no change in resolution. Now that would be a great feature. As it currently stands, you can put a piece of vector art into the Microsoft Clip Art Gallery. But when the artwork is inserted the MS application forcibly rasterizes it with some unwanted results.

Save As Template Command
Illustrator CS lets you reuse designs by saving files as templates that include artboard dimensions, styles, symbols, layers, and more. There are also more than 200 professionally designed templates and over 100 OpenType fonts in addition to clip art and stock photographs - all included free on the installation CD.

Adobe states that Illustrator CS for Macintosh requires a PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 CPU, OS X v.10.2 through v.10.3, 192MB of RAM (256MB recommended), and 470MB of available hard-disk space. For this review, Illustrator CS performed on a G4 800 MHz iMac with 1 GB of memory, running OS 10.2.8.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best software of its kind
Print Explosion Deluxe is, in my opinion, orders of magnitude better than the original Print Explosion and beats Print Shop (which, by comparison, is cumbersome, not "Mac-like" and not os x compatible) hands down. The artwork in Print Explosion Deluxe (templates, etc.) is really nice, too, and it's easy for me to customize. I've used Print Shop and Print Master on the PC, and Print Explosion Deluxe is on par with those products, which I think are great on the Windows side.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insanely Great Mac Print Software!
I've been a user of Nova Development products for years, having bought their first Art Explosion product when they first brought it out. They've always been committed to great Mac software, and Print Explosion Deluxe won't disappoint.

My wife and I are both teachers, and we use Print Explosion Deluxe (she under OS 9 and me under OS X) for school projects, as well as for our church. It's a simply outstanding program for making banners, flyers, greeting cards, and other printed projects. The templates/designs are great, and the tools are excellent. And, most important to me being a Mac user since 1984, it feels like a Macintosh product, unlike Print Shop and some of the other "Windows ports" I've tried that are just hokey on the Mac.

Contrary to another review I read on Amazon, I think the graphics are incredibly well organized and of great quality. It's easy to find images for just about any purpose, and the software is just incredibly easy to use.

It even supports EPS graphics. So no matter where the clip art comes from, you can print it out, even on an inkjet printer, and the quality is perfect at any size. Even Microsoft Word doesn't do that for me. And creating your own projects from scratch is easy.

Along with Quicken, Word and Entourage, Print Explosion Deluxe is one of my core Macintosh applications. I use it daily and recommend it wholeheartedly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice app, but has weird quirks that need fixing.
Pretty much everything they claim about this app is true. If you're looking for a simple app for print projects, this is hard to beat. That said, here are the gotchas to look out for:

The app doesn't support ANY antialiasing making on-screen editing difficult. If your project is destined for print this isn't a big deal, but if your destination is a screen image it's a problem.

The program's JPEG compression is HORRIBLE; its BEST setting is worse than Photoshop's WORST setting! With its lack of antialiased text, this renders the program's e-postcard feature practically useless.

The installer is questionable. The program ships on three CDs, with the installer on one and extra graphics and fonts on the others. But the installer doesn't add the contents of the other two CDs to your installation. Those have to be installed MANUALLY. Considering that the quality of the graphics on the other two CDs is much higher AND the fact that this information isn't clearly explained anywhere, it becomes an issue for the less knowledgable/experience (for whom this app is primarily aimed towards).

Knowing this, I would buy this app again -- but I wouldn't use it for anything destined for on-screen use. Since the app is called *PRINT* Explosion this makes sense. :-)

UPDATE 5/2/04: Since writing this review, I have learned via an email conversation with Nova Development that they have no interest in addressing the shortcomings listed above. I have also purchased The Print Shop for Mac OS X which is a significantly nicer/higher quality app and is definitely an OS X-savvy app (not a Windows port as Print Explosion is), but it doesn't have the billions of bits of art and fonts that come with Print Explosion. But if given the choice between Print Explosion and Print Shop, choose Print Shop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Mac Software
Print Explosion works great with OS X Panther. It has a wealth of templates, images and fonts. The only problem is you can't start with a blank project, but it is easy enough to pick a generic one and delete the stuff you don't want. Well worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great basics for design for less money
First, I do promo for a large fundraising project. I purchased the basic version and found it to be extremely workable however when I then upgraded and attempted to email my work to my printers I found that my fonts and designs were corrupted and wouldn't come through well. As the main piece I created using this program I print out and mail about 6000 copies a month this is too bad.
This is mainly names and the program does the graphics well just not the word processing aspect.
So the upshot is for little money you can create some great basic pieces. Make a master and you are fine if you can do the printing on the glass.
I also found a limitation of not being able to work with unusual sizes. That is overcome by figuring your own measurments
All in all a very useful program and I am reommending it for all 179 organizations following in my fundraising footsteps.
Our large organization sent out a cd version based on this for my main fundraising piece and I got a call from someone saying he couldn't afford the $900.00 software -how did I do this?
Pretty good recommendation. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Matter of Choice
InDesign-a lovely second act to the ubiquituous Quark. I have been using Indesign for about three months and while I appreciate many of the differences, I find it a perplexing and often frustrating program. It seems to have a mind of its own. Type suddenly becomes highlighted, drop shadows appear unwanted, and if anyone can figure out the how to line type up on the baseline (the fools at Adobe support certainly don't) please let us in on it. It's a program with too many choices, too many foolish options. Design, while always in the market for options can suffer from too many, delicate controls. I am happy to have learned InDesign, but I must confess it is with some relief and confidence that I often return to that embattled Quark just to get the job done.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now the best, but so was Betamax
Given the creativity and productivity improvements available in InDesign I would like to think the world would drop Quark and instantly embrace InDesign. I'm sure Adobe would like that, too. Fat chance. The CS version is truly a program come of age and a worthy inheritor of the page layout crown. But, alas, the world runs on Quark and that doesn't seem likely to change any time soon. I use it because I have to, not because I want to. I just hope InDesign doesn't become the software version of the Betamax.

4-0 out of 5 stars Takes Page Design to a New Level
Adobe PageMaker has evolved into InDesign CS. Shedding its caterpillar skin, InDesign CS has emerged as a marvelous butterfly. It is fitting tribute that a pen and butterflies adorn the Adobe InDesign CS box.

Adobe InDesign CS software combines production power with graphic freedom. Designers can lay out pages more rapidly. You will find that InDesign CS shares standard Adobe commands, tools, palettes, and shortcuts with Adobe
Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator software programs.

Work More Efficiently with InDesign CS

InDesign creative toolset gives flight to your design ideas. Designers and Illustrators can work more efficiently with InDesign's organized tools. You will save production time by importing native Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator files.

Business designers can work with popular PageMaker features in InDesign CS. This includes data merge, ALAP InBooklet Special Edition for imposition, and dynamic bullets and numbering. InDesign CS easily converts PageMaker 6.0 and 7.0 files with the included document converter.

Work Experience with InDesign

I find the InDesign Story Editor similar to PageMaker Story Editor. Using Control "Y" or simply right-clicking (or control-clicking) the text will call up the Story Editor. This allows you to use live editing for your page design's content and styles.

I can edit text and make changes in a section of my document without having to go to my "Continued on Page . . ." I have found this helpful in a multiple page document. You can set the preferences for font, font size, line spacing and background color.

Unfortunately, Story Editor is not a full-featured text editor since there are no spell checker, outlining, or table capabilities.

You can set your document "presets" for page size, columns and margins that are similar to Printer and PDF Export presets. Using the InDesign selection tool, I can drag the handles and press the shift key to preserve the frame's
original proportions. In addition, you can import styles from Microsoft Word.

InDesign CS has resizing capabilities but it takes several attempts to get resizing done right. I find it easier to resize my photographs in Photoshop before importing graphics to InDesign. This allows me to crop images to my desired shape and resize them.

I can move the palettes by holding the Option key and dragging them anywhere on my desktop space. You can make changes to tables and your headers and footers and line them up to where you want them to appear.

Pro Reaction

The standard Adobe interface works well with InDesign CS, Photoshop and Illustrator. InDesign has nested styles and XML support. InDesign CS has a new Story Editor and better separation and new flattening previews. Noted was improved performance and new tools and palettes in InDesign CS.

Con Reaction

Within InDesign CS, you cannot save files for use with InDesign 2.0 or earlier. You cannot save InDesign files to QuarkXPress. Opening complex pages within InDesign CS takes a large amount of time on Mac G3 computers.

Final Remarks

This InDesign CS version is a full-blown power-packed upgrade. I feel that InDesign CS will convert more PageMaker and Quark users over to the new Adobe InDesign CS program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quark: move aside!
InDesign CS is perhaps the application that benefited most from the most recent upgrade that Adobe made to its key applications, bringing a load of useful and highly expected features and built to take advantage of all the system enhancements that OSX Panther has to offer. I'd like to stress ONE feature, though, that blew me away... two words: NESTED STYLES. If you have suffered through the painful process of laying out a document where more than two styles are required in a particular content block, you will shed tears of joy when you see this at work!

You are bound to also find very handy the enhanced table features such as automated running headers and footers for tables that run across multiple linked text frames. Printers (people in the printing industry) are also going to be happy (or so Adobe wants) with the features that have been included in InDesign CS for them.

All in all, if I were Quark, I'd be shaking because InDesign is not going to stop until it takes over the current market share that QuarkXpress has... it's just a matter of time and perhaps a version or two more. But try CS now: I think you will love it! ... Read more
