4-0 out of 5 stars Parlez-vous français?
This interactive learning experience is fun, colorful and very humorous! It makes learning enjoyable! The only drawback to this program is that it is quite difficult to understand at first. You need to have substantial knowledge of French to be able to catch on to the process; luckily there is an English translation to everything so that you can figure it out. Overall I found Asterix to be a good learning tool in my ongoing effort to learn French. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

What kind of a language learner are you? Do you esteem the umlaut? Have you studied a little German before? Does it bug you when people say "Porsch" instead of "Porsche"? Yes? Well, congratulations! You are an anal-retentive, intermediate German student--and Learn German Now! will be a satisfying, helpful software option for you. (If you're not quite this informed or persnickety, then click here for an applicable beginner's title).

In highfalutin' teacher lingo, the software uses "authentic language" and hasyou practice using "communication gap" exercises--and you'll be happy to know this is a widely used university approach. In lay speak, this means you will:

  • Watch videos of native German speakers interacting naturally with each other (the acting's not half bad, either)
  • Read printed versions of their dialogues
  • Listen to the dialogues word by word or segment by segment
  • Practice pronouncing dialogues word by word or segment by segment using the enclosed microphone
  • Apply vocabulary by filling in new words from the dialogues, or in othergame-style activities like crossword puzzles
Appealing to an anal-retentive nature and true to the Transparent Language brand, each sentence is given with a full translation, and each word has itscomplete grammatical information (such as tense and case) glossed. You can also slow down videos and recorded speech to hear more clearly, and you can play back your own pronunciation to compare it with the native speakers'. It's painful, we know, but helpful.

Note that to achieve true success with this program you should know at leasta bit of German first and be somewhat comfortable with terms like "accusative case" or "second person." Also, the software gives pronunciationfeedback with gimmicky graphs that will make sense to you only if you've studied acoustic phonetics--nonetheless, the interactive pronunciation and the videos are the most useful features.

Overall, the use of multimedia and the practice modules are well designed, making this an excellent intermediate-level program for people who want to maintain or expand their German skills. Caveats: The software works with both Mac OS and Windows, but some extra stuff on the bonus CD works only with Windows. (This should not at all dissuade Mac users, however.) Also remember that it's rather antisocial to practice conversation only on the computer, so take what you learn out and interact with real-life German speakers! --Erik Macki ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This
I'm interested in Learning German since I'm in German Club at school and thought I'd take a break from the german books and get software , huge mistake with this product. Its boring and is really is a waste of money . I begged my parents for this and they got it ...and I was happy . When I opened and installed it and ready to learn... The guy said it had three levels and he had good feedbacks from other people that bought his product and etc . This is not for beginners...

1-0 out of 5 stars Good for nothing unless you already speak German
I bought this for my girlfriend because her mother is German and she always wanted to learn. She found herself literally falling asleep at the computer !!! The speech recognition doesn't work worth a damn !! I could say most anything in English and it would rate me as good ! The whole thing doesn't seem to have any planning associated with it. You just muddle around trying to learn German. I sent it back to Transparent for a refund. Let's see if at least they can get that right. If you are a beginner, STAY AWAY FROM THIS !!! Try Rosetta Stone, it seems more for beginners.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's not that good
When I bought this software I was thrilled with the comments on this product that I decided to give it a try. However when I installed it, it was so boring that I lost interest in a matter of minutes. The vocabulary drills always take you to the same ten words, even though it says it teaches you 10000. The bonus grammar software included will never teach you any grammar, however I must recognize that it has some good dialogues if you want to practice your listening skills. If you want a more complete software I recommend Learn to Speak German.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty cool pronunciation practice
This isn't so much for beginners, but it's pretty fun praticesoftware and great for help with pronunciation. The videos are a neatfeature, too. I'd say you should have done at least two semesters of German in college or so before this would be something for you--but then it's one of the only options on the market for more-advanced German students since so much that's out there is for total beginners. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars useful and fun too
This program is entertaining and easy to use. The interface is quite intuitive. The lessons flow naturally and are actually pretty fun and sort of addicting. A good indonesian-english dictionary would serve as a useful compliment to this product. It's only weakness is that it contains little on conversation. A listing of common phrases and their usages would be handy. You might also consider purchasing a good phrasebook. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I am not a Berlitz employee
I would like to respond to the reviewer who wrote that the "gushing" reviews are all written by Berlitz employees. I am not, nor have I ever been, an employee of Berlitz, nor any company affiliated with Berlitz in any way. My full name is in my review, anyone who wishes may contact Berlitz and confirm that I have never worked for them in any location. I did try quite a number of other Spanish language systems, and this is the one that worked. Period. For the $15.00 or so I paid for CD, plus an hour of work every day for several months on the CD, the payoff was fantastic, far better than any other system I used. I am happy that others have success with other systems, I am only reporting my success with this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars berlitz employees write these reviews
berlitz employees write most of the gushing reviews posted on this site. Beware that there are much less expensive products, that there is nothing revolutionary about these products, and that you will find less expensive variants elsewhere. Be cost conscious and know that you will not learn a language from a cd rom

5-0 out of 5 stars This way works to help people communicate in español
I found myself in a new work situation where I absolutely had to communicate in Spanish to my new employees, including everything from raises, hiring, firing, promotions, applications, and much more. Having virtually no success in previous Spanish courses, I bought this CD-ROM, and just stayed with it through all 50 lessons. Before I knew it, I was being told by my employees that my Spanish was excellent, a few said it was "perfect". The CD covers many basic settings, and is done in a fun, non-intimidating way. It helped me hear, speak, write and read Spanish.

All I can say is the Berlitz method works, I give it my highest recommendation, and hope that anyone else who needs to learn Spanish (or any other language) will enjoy the success I had with this CD. While it may be true that we don't say "diga" when we answer the phone, as others have commented about this CD, I would not trade that shortcoming for any other Spanish method, because nothing I used was nearly as successful as this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a grammar error
As a correction, I will briefly say that "diga" is the correct way to answer the telephone. In fact, "diga" is in the dictionary, but it is a conjugate of the word "decir," meaning to speak. Just like "does" may not appear in our dictionary because it comes from "do". Please do not hold this against the program, because they are correct. However, it may lack in explaining the pertinent information on why one word is used instead of another.

3-0 out of 5 stars that is not a grammar error
As a rebuttle to the prior review, I have not ordered this program, but I would like to make a correction. Using "diga" to answer the phone is very common in most spanish speaking countries. This may be confusing, but many words are conjugations of other words, and "diga" comes for "Decir" meaning "speak." The program is not wrong, but it may not be effective in explaining all pertinent information. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice toy, does not teach you Greek
This product is very different from e.g. "Learn to speak French". It does not teach you basic Greek. It will teach you, pleasantly, to say some words and phrases. That's it.
If you are pleased to be able to say "Good morning", "Thank you" and "May I have the bill, please" in the local lingo, go ahead and enjoy. If you want to understand any reply, you need more than this. If you just want to get around, a very, very thin printed parlor will serve you better and more reliably. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars In Muster dialect!
Well, I didn't expect that the less used variant of Irish and less spoken was used for a popular game, aimed for the absolute beginner.
Muster dialect has peculiarities, most of it are in grammar, so that it won't be useful even for those that want take a grasp in Muster dialect.
An Ulster or Connaught speaker would have a fairly low point in some games.
No explication about lenitions.
Which is the use of a game that teaches you correctly only to tell the time in Munster dialect? Perhaps to have a job at the local radio station...

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great CD for the first learner.
This CD is a great way to learn the basics of the Irish Language. As previous review indicates, it won't satisfy the experienced that is looking for totally formal language instruction, what it does do is give you the basics and get you on your way to speaking Irish.

Once mastered, then you will have the basic tools to go on to the more difficult Irish Instruction.

It is presented in an enjoyable, Game type formate that makes it easy and fun to learn.

1-0 out of 5 stars You won't hear real Irish in that!
I took this CD-Rom from a mediatheque close to home. I have to admit that I already speak Irish fluently and I just wanted to have a look at this cd-rom. I was really disappointed... Well, of course- this kind of CD rom just aims to teach you a couple of words and expressions like "how are you?", say what time it is, and name several items. But unfortunately, what you can hear on this CD isn't native Irish, the speakers have an awful English accent (an crampa gallda, as we say in Irish) - as most non-native Irish speakers have - and aren't able to pronounce the sounds correctly. Native speakers of Irish do thrill the r's as an Italian would do, they do pronounce dental t and d (instead of English alveolar t and d, that you can hear here), they make the distinction between "broad" (velarized) and "slender" (palatalized) consonants, which are so important in Irish, and the speakers on the CD just don't make this distinction at all.
I wonder if the speakers who have been recorded here are able to understand real native speakers of Irish... I guess they're not.
It's just as if you would ask to an English learner of French to record tapes for French language learning material. Of course he wouldn't have a perfect accent.
That what they did with Irish here... I hope that not many people will try to learn Irish with this CD-Rom ! I'd advise to buy Learning Irish (by Mícheál Ó Siadhail), Teach Yourself Irish, or Now You're Talking (if you want to learn respectively Connemara Irish, Munster Irish or Ulster Irish): on those recordings you will hear native speakers and their pronounciation is fine. Or go and spend a couple of weeks (or more) in Western Ireland, in the Gaeltacht. There you'll learn real Irish.
But forget about Talk Now Irish...
Ádh mór oraibh, tá súil agam gur Gaeilge bhinn bhlasta a fhoghlaimeos sibh ! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Way to Learn
I tried this software because I felt that learning by the methods taught in books was stale and difficult. This software is everything I thought it would be. I've only been using it 3 weeks and already I feel I'm really learning the language. Vietnamese is a tonal language and speaking and listening are especially important. With Rosetta you do both often and the speaking section, which records your voice and compares it to the native speaker, has been unbelievably helpful. Grammar and vocabulary is never drilled in. You merely pick it up through the natural process of looking at photos of action and hearing the speaker describe the photos. I thought that would be difficult but this method helps the student remember it longer because they understand the reasoning behind the lessons. You see the language used in a practical way. I cannot recommend Rosetta enough. If you really want to learn a language a new way, this is it.

4-0 out of 5 stars better than a book
This software is easy to use and is much better than a book. This is because Vietnamese is a tonal language, so the word "ba", for example, could have several different meanings depending on whether you use an "up tone", a "down tone" or a monotone. Unless you can actually hear the differences with your own ears it's very difficult to learn the nuances, which is why I would always recommend a software program such as this which lets your both see the sentences and hear them over your speakers.

The only thing keeping the program from getting five stars is that you have to exit about four different screens in order to get out of the program. Also, some of the stock photos they use to identify the phrase in question are clearly not Vietnamese people or places. It would have been nice to have seen it be a bit more authentic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful
I bought this with a bunch of other language materials so I could learn some minimal Vietnamese before going to Viet Nam.

It was both more and less than I expected.

It was "more" because the training scheme (what I would call "immersive drill and practice") was much more effective than I would have guessed. It was "less" because it makes no attempt to explain any grammar, explicitly define words used or describe things like the Vietnamese phonetic and tone system (they don't even mention which dialect they are teaching. I think it is a northern dialect). Because of this, I suspect you'll need to use this in addition to some other resource no matter what your goal is for learning the language. However, as as supplemental resource it is very good.

The scheme used by this product is pretty simple. Each lesson (there are 22 lessons in this package) involves ten drills which collectively introduce some small set of words/ideas. Each drill contains four things (e.g. drill 1 has "girl", "boy", "cat", "dog". Drill 10 of lesson 2-11 has "The girls are not going to jump. The boy is going to jump", "The girls are not jumping. The boy is jumping", "The girls have not jumped. The boy has jumped", and "The boy and the girls are jumping"), and each thing has a photo, a written form and a spoken form. Basically, you can choose which form you want to be presented with (e.g. the spoken form) and which you want to pick the answer from (e.g. a photo). For each drill in a lesson, you are presented with one of the four things and then prompted with the four possibilities to pick the answer from, then you are presented with another one of the four things and prompted to answer, and so on. This means you get asked 40 questions in each lesson. On the surface, then, this is a simple drill-and-practice package. The drills, however, are organized to build on preceding ones so that you are able to progress from "a girl" to "The girls have not jumped. The boy has jumped." in the span of 22 lessons (220 drills). This also provides all the benefits of computerized drill-and-practice (tireless presentation, easy repetition, tracking of mistaken answers, and so on). Additionally, since this has the benefit of offering written, spoken and pictorial "modalities", it really helps one learn the material. Personally, I found it tremendously useful to be able to click the "play again" button over and over again when I was trying to hear exactly how a particular word was pronounced (something which is exceedingly cumbersome, at best, to do with audiotape). For the audio portions, there are two speakers (a man and a woman) who speak different drills, so you do get a little variation in speakers.

The software also has a "listening" mode where it will play the audio phrases for you and record you saying the same thing back so you can compare your pronunciation with the audio (it also makes some attempt to offer a calculation of how close your pronunciation is, though I couldn't judge how good its automated judgment was). This seems promising, but I found it caused the program to crash on Mac OS X, and the interface was frustrating (for me) on OS 9 because I often misjudged when I was supposed to start speaking.

There are also many features which I would have expected that this didn't have. Someone else mentioned that you can't print out the pictures or the drills as flash cards (there is a PDF file which contains the written sentences for all the lessons, so you can print that out). I was surprised that there was no way to search for words or phrases (e.g. show me all the drills where "red" is used), and they do not support writing/typing (which I know I would have benefitted from). The interface is sometimes a little cryptic (for some reason the company has chosen to put almost no text in the interface, so you need to learn what various strange icons mean in order to use it). It isn't clear to me whether I'll end up buying the Level 1 package, for it's current list price of [$$$] seems a little ... to me.

For [$$$], this seems like a great supplement to a more traditional language text, and you would probably surprise yourself with how much you could learn with just this. Personally, I feel like the price/feature ratio was about right for my needs here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product.
I would highly recommend this product to anyone who knows no Vietnamese but would like to learn a little about the structure of the language and some basic phrases. I got it two days ago and have been using it obsessively. It's surprisingly fun, and it works in such an intuitive way that you feel like you're learning a lot very quickly. I've tried out other language programs in the past but this is by far the best I've seen.

This system seems a little aqward at first, but it is truly
amazing what you are learning and don't even realize it untill
you hear Vietnamese people talking and you know what is being
said.

This system however, is not so much for one who wants to visit
but more for the person who really wants to learn the language
in its entirity. ... Read more
