4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but only if you learn how to watch it...
This is a fun way to practice Italian. You see the story frame by frame and hear the dialogue being read in Italian, then you can click to see a translation of what was said. Also you can choose to hide the words in Italian, to see if you can understand what they are saying without reading the words. It is very challenging though for me as an intermediate student. But it is also very beneficial for intermediate students and above. I definitely would not reccomend it to beginners.

And now for my biggest complaint about this program and the real reason why I felt compelled to review it. The story is based on an Asterix book where a baby shows up at their house, the comic is called Asterix and Son. Now I guess Eurotalk thought it would be fun to let you hear every single sound as it is written in the comic. In other words, if they punch a Roman and the authors wrote POW! in the book, you will hear a sound like someone getting punched. This is no problem for things like fighting and the dog barking, but in probably 75% of the frames, the baby whines. Again this is no problem in a comic book, since reading the word "Wah" doesn't hurt your eyes. But you would think for this program they would just assume that we know what a baby crying sounds like. They couldn't even let us hear it once or twice and then decide ok we get the picture. They let us hear the baby crying every single time. This gets slightly irritating after the first two pages, by the end of the first CD you will be insane and Italian will be the last thing on your mind, and you will probably be deaf too, so what good is it if you can understand Italian anyway?

The baby whines 4-5 times louder than anyone in the comic strip talks, so if you turn it down to a level where the baby's whining only hurts your ears a little bit, you will not be able to hear anything else. BTW it doesn't sound cute or even like a real baby...it sounds like some guy trying to sound like a baby. If you manage to get through the entire story, you will probably enjoy listening to people scratch their fingernails across the board or Celine Dion.

Now how could I give this product four stars despite the incessant whining? Well you have to figure out a trick that I learned. You turn the volume all the way down on your speakers, then let the next strip pop up, and see if the baby is whining in it (you will know because it will have the dialogue bubble). Then wait a few seconds, turn the volume up very gradually and when you think it is the babys turn to talk immediately turn the volume all the way down. Hopefully you will get the hang of it before you throw your computer out the window. By the way, until you have mastered this trick, do not, repeat, do not attempt to use this product without earmuffs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Aday! Bring your banana chips and give this a try!
Malayalam is not a language for which you can have a huge choice of learning tools. If you are a relative "gringo" with little experience in Indian languages, this may be a good program to get you started with the basics of talking.

Lucky for English speakers - Malayalam is influenced the most by English after Sanskrit and Tamil. Unlucky for English speakers - there's a whole pile of linguistically different sounds involved in the other two parts of the language before English is ever even thought about. Get out your marbles and listen up - if you've got an open mind and a little bit of assistance, you might just end up knowing some Malayalam.

The format is wonderful, with sections for basics, food, time, body parts, phrases and more. Each level allows you to go through and hear of all the pertinent vocabulary (this can set to play in a continous loop - a nice way of learning and practicing away from the constraints of the computer). There are games for each section in two different levels of difficulty, and keys that allow you to build memory clues. With each game you accumulate points, and the points are tallied towards a final goal at which you recieve special recognition. You recieve nice encouragement for all correct answers - if you learn anything at all from this, if will definitely be the words for "Yes" and "No"!

The overall theme is suprisingly entertaining, without being condescending or childlike. It's very nicely designed, compared to many other language CD-Roms, and doesn't give you the idea that it's the same general template used for 35 different languages (except in one aspect, see below!) This was definitely designed with adult learners in mind, and for what - $19.99? - it has some really nice multimedia functions that keep you focused, including printable vocab lists.

I originally had a problem loading TalkNow Malayalam to my computer, but the technical assistance people were helpful, via email, and the problem was easily solved. That was great.

I did not give this a five star rating because of the following:

The pronounciations are very fast, and there is no way to slow them down. The given vocabulary and phrases are only written in Malayalam, so unless you know to read the script, you are left alone to dissect the more subtle sounds, to which your ear may not be accustomed. Find a native speaker for guidance.

Also, if you are a native speaker of Malayalam looking for a refresher, or someone wishing to read and write Malayalam, this is probably not a good scheme for you. It's more along the line of "learn some words and phrases before you travel there" knowledge. A good CD-ROM for more Malayalam intensive language study is available at www.vidyarambham.com

And finally, the biggest suprise: Talk Now Malayalam is lead by your virtual guides, an extremely white, northern European couple whose images are always present at the bottom of the screen during the vocabulary recitations. (I imagine they're the standard TalkNow Language folks, but in this case it's very wierd!!) Their lips move to make you believe that these honkeys are speaking perfectly pronounced Malayalam, in voices that would only come out of their slight frames had they been posessed. Perhaps this was a bit of subliminal encouragement for all the WASPs who decided to take a stab at learning Malayalam to impress the cute programmer down the hall. Mind you, this is not a detraction from the lessons at hand, but overall the effect is hillarious. Hopefully it would just add to the fun of learning a new language. "If they could do it... darnit, I can to" :)

While this program will not make you a candidate for retiring to Kottayam and ferrying a houseboat along some Kerala backwaters, you'll at least entertain native speakers, and at best win yourself some allies by any honest efforts made.

Tie on a lungi and give it a whirl. Best of luck! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Early versions of language instruction software were little more than CD-ROM equivalents of lessons on audiotape. Instant Immersion Spanish, on the other hand, represents the next generation--software that exploits multimedia to its fullest in order to make learning Spanish easy and entertaining.

This two-CD-ROM package starts with a simple vocabulary builder that divides words into categories--colors, foods, and body parts, for example--and then drills users on their Spanish equivalents. Instructors translate each word while providing an image to match the spoken concept. A user's memorization skills can then be tested in a handful of matching games, while pronunciation is honed by speaking the words into a microphone and contrasting with the instructors' voices.

The second CD-ROM is where the immersion element comes in. Once users have learned the nouns and phrases on disc one, they are presented with a tougher challenge. While still following a basic matching-game format, instructors speak in complete sentences, requiring the learner to pick out familiar terms and work out the larger meanings of the game clues in context. Along the way, more vocabulary and some basic grammar are assimilated.

Instant Immersion Spanish provides an excellent route to picking up enough "getting-by" Spanish for a Latin vacation or to supplement class study. Some users may struggle with the transition to the tough love of the second CD-ROM, but this process is a mirror of the real-world experience of going to a new country where English is not the dominant tongue. The immersion kicks the brain into high gear and accelerates language acquisition by presenting a serious challenge--all while keeping the course of study in an entertaining game format. Those new to Spanish will definitely benefit from the practice of listening for words they know.

This first-rate content, combined with bright and easy-to-follow graphics, makes Instant Immersion Spanish a terrific opportunity for anyone looking to grasp the basics of speaking Spanish in as little time as possible. --Alyx Dellamonica ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for beginners, children, and travellers!
These cd-roms contain lots of fun interactive games and activities, which are especially good for children, but nevertheless enjoyable for people of all ages. For someone who knows very little Spanish vocabulary, it's a wonderful place to begin. It's also very helpful for travellers trying to learn helpful phrases and important words before a trip; in fact, there's even a section helping you to learn how to understand directions!

However, I DO NOT recommend these cd-roms for people with an extensive background in Spanish. If you've taken a couple years of Spanish and have built up a moderate vocabulary, these cd-roms will not challenge you. Also, I do not recommend this program for anyone who wants to learn Spanish grammar. These cd-roms, as their title suggests, emphasize vocabulary, and speaking and listening skills, and they do not touch on grammar AT ALL.

Overall, I consider this an excellent program for anyone planning a trip to Spain or Latin America, or for use as a supplement for *beginning* students of the language (an additional book on grammar would help). I really do enjoy these programs, and I just ordered the Russian cd-roms just like it. Since I don't know a word, it'll be perfect.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Spanish Program for Beginners
I purchased this program knowing almost no spanish. I found it to be a very helpful tool to help me learn the basics of the language.

Pros:
The program is designed in a game format in which the user completes lessons and quizzes to gain points. The speakers are clear and easy to understand. The quizzes are really fun too. The instructor on the screen says a word or phrase and you have to click on the matching picture. I had a little trouble at this when I first started but I soon caught on. There is also a memory game that the user can play to review everything covered so far. That game, I found, was the most helpful way of retaining the information I have learned.

Cons:

There really is no introduction. You just pop in the cd and BOOM, you begin. The navigation is a little annoying because not everything is labeled so you end up having to click on the help button to have everything spelled out for you. Other than that, I really can't find anything wrong with the program. Like I said, I highly reccomend it :)

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I should have read Jason's review before buying this. CD 1 was ok; I can say 'Telephone' '17' 'brown' in Spanish. But CD 2 is... I don't understand ANYTHING. I'm returning this to the manufacturer - they offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

5-0 out of 5 stars SO MUCH FUN I can't stop!
Okey, so I was not a natural in highschool Spanish class like I had hoped to be (I did get a C after all). But now years later after trying cassettes and workbooks alike, I can now have fun learning Espanol like I always dreamed to do! You will too if you pick this CD set! Or better yet get the 5 CD-ROM Deluxe Edition for about $$$. I can't go a day without playing this!
I love the interactive games that they have and getting the "Si!" from the computer characters. It keeps score of your points too! The best part is that you can record your voice and practice that famous Iberian lisp "th" (for "c") without having to be concerned about anyone hearing it!
Look for the very fun "game show" on the second CD. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Software, But Not For The Total Beginner
I bought my Instant Immersion German sofware at Sam's Club. My software came with 7 CDs. It was [$$$]. If you are going to buy this sofware, I suggest that you find one in the same brand that has more CDs for less money. It is hard for me (a beginner) because there is no exact part of the software that shows you an English word and then shows you the word translated in German. They begin talking to you in German and you have to sort of figure it out for yourself. One thing that I did like was that my 7 CD version included 3 CDs for Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced (the same program, just 3 different levels). I highly suggest to purchase this program in addition to German audio tapes and books to get a head start. But once you get a little familiar with the language, it is a perfect software to buy. The best one on the market!

2-0 out of 5 stars If a person has the time this two set cd is a winner
I started useing this product three months ago a couple of hours a night on the average and am now ready for an actual class. I really love this set of cds titled Instant Immersion German. I have learned a lot; this is a winner in my book and I have never had a problem loading it on my pc.. This language set of CD's is good for beginers. My young children love it too; they think it's just plain fun..David G.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not exactly what I wanted, but the best German CD I've seen.
I was thinking of something better and more interesting, but instead, I got a bunch of little games that detract from the objective if you do not improve. I have purchased a different CD that is much worse than this one.

If you see this CD first, keep it in your back pocket.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great way to try the best language learning software
This is by far the best language learning software out there for the DIY language learner. It uses total immersion without any English (this is a good thing).I own the full length courses for both Russian and German 1 and 2, and while it was no small investment, it was definitely worth it.The Rosetta Stone software is like the Pimsleur tapes in that it's the best of its kind and you get what you pay for.I bought this program to try it and passed it on to a friend when I bought my full courses.

The "powerpac" is a good investment if at least two of the languages out of the seven on the disc are ones you want to learn. If not, you're better off choosing the specific explorer program for your selected language as single language explorer programs are half the price.

Again, this is great software but you won't acheive any level of fluency with the abbreviated programs. But since the larger programs are extremely expensive,it's a good way to see if you like the system before you take the big plunge and spend the bucks on the full courses.

3-0 out of 5 stars NOT for serious language learning
Excellent, easy-to-use interface creates a fun environment for an introduction to seven languages. But do not expect to reach any level of fluency because there just isn't enough material for any one language.

I would buy this package simply to see if Rosetta Stone style of learning (use of pictures while hearing the words for the object in the picture) would be appropriate for you.You can't go wrong if your expectations are low.

4-0 out of 5 stars Say 'The boy is under the ball' in seven languages!
An earlier reviewer claimed that Japanese was not included, which is incorrect. There are in fact, three versions of Japanese available. While the Explorer series are essentially hooks to get you to buy into the far pricier full versions of the software, you still got a lot of language for your dollar.Don't expect to learn a whole language on this CD.Don't even expect to have any degree of fluency. However, as an intorduction to a language, PowerPac can't be beat. The interface is intuitive, engaging and frankly, a lot of fun.A variety of activities work your brain in different ways, helping retension. There is also a 'voice analyzer' feature that compares your voice to a native speakers, but it's far too frustrating to use effectively.Other than that blemish, you have a great facile language learning powerhouse.

4-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Value - Easy Language Learning
The Rosetta Stone, with Spanish, French, German, English, Dutch, Russian and Chinese basic language instruction, all on one CD, is a lot of learning in one small package.Putting all the languages together inspires a very intuitive interface.Learning, grouped by categories such as food, numbers, actions, etc., is at your own pace. You can practice to your heart's content.Besides a stand alone tool, it's a great supplement for regular language instruction. As you can tell, I find it quite helpful. But make sure you have your own dictionary for reference when using the program.

4-0 out of 5 stars nicely structured, very user friendly
My CD-Rom does include the japanese lessons. I find this product extremely accessible and very nicely structured. The lessons progress in easily understandable segments. For me, it is an ideal way to start learning a newlanguage, as you always have a reference between pictures, the written, andthe spoken words. My only criticism is that I would prefer some grammaticalexplanations, especially for chinese and japanese. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Save Your Money!
If you're interested in actually LEARNING Farsi (Persian), this software program is NOT the resource to turn to. While Eurotalk deserves five stars for their incredibly user-friendly lesson interface, this program consists of nothing more than quick snippet lines for business travellers who need enough to survive 2-3 days on an overseas trip (i.e. "Where is the hotel?" "Can you direct me to a phone?" etc. etc). The only redeeming feature of this program is that a user can actually hear Farsi being spoken (and thus get an idea as to lingual sounds). See ya...

4-0 out of 5 stars Talk Now! Farsi
The program is great and very helpful. It has a printable dictionary for each section as well as a portion of each section where you use a microphone to speak the words being taught to help you say everything properly! I love the program itself, the only downfall is that you'll really like it and when you want to move to intermediate and advanced you find that the publisher doesn't have Farsi for either of those!! I think it's pretty sad that they start you off and then don't have Farsi in intermediate or advanced but at thelst the beginner's program is great! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a fun way to learn some Dutch
This is a clever use of a computer. The attempt is to put you in a "virtual" Dutch-speaking environment. To fully utilize the product, you'll need a mouse, keyboard, speakers, and microphone. There are about 3,200 images (many duplicates) shown in groups of 4. You select either mode-A, -B, -C, -D, -E. For mode-A, a native speaker says a phrase or sentence in Dutch, which you also see written on the screen, and you move your mouse into the one of the 4 pictures to which you think the statement applies. You click the mouse and get immediate feedback on whether you're right or wrong. For mode-B, you hear the native speaker's statement but get no writing on the screen (practice in aural comprehension). For C, you get the writing but no speaker (practice in reading comprehension). For D (you'll love this), you get the native speaker, and you repeat what he or she says into your microphone, and you get immediate pictorial feedback on the screen as to how closely your pronunciation matches that of the native speaker. For E, you get the native speaker and no writing, and you get to type in Dutch what he or she says using your keyboard, and you get immediate feedback on whether you're correct.

It's clever and a lot of fun if you enjoy studying languages. But ... there's no accompanying book to speak of, just a list of the 3,200 statements without translation provided.

Before buying this product, I had previously spent several months studying Dutch grammar (see my poignant review of "Colloquial Dutch" by Donaldson, a fine book by the way). Hence I already knew the rudiments and had a context in which to place those 3,200 statements and make sense of them. I had the fine Dutch-English dictionary published by Routledge, "201 Dutch Verbs" by Stern, and "Colloquial Dutch" by my computer to refer to. I found this course a painless way to review grammar, supplement my vocabulary, and learn to say some useful things by rote.

Is this Rosetta Stone approach good for a complete beginner with no prior knowledge of Dutch? Would such a user learn the rules of grammar intuitively by discerning patterns in the 3,200 statements? ... Naaah. I'm skeptical. My advice to a complete beginner is to start elsewhere with a good grammar book like "Colloquial Dutch".

I gave the product 4 stars instead of 5 because I have some doubts about accuracy. I found one error that I'm certain of: in one instance an "apostrophe-s" was used to indicate possession. This is good English but bad Dutch. When I called Fairfield to report this error, the employee didn't seem at all interested. He assured me that everything was corrected in the newer version (I bought this product in 2002), but he didn't record or even listen to my error report. Also, I found the word ordering in a sentence suspect in a few instances. Did they just grab 3 native speakers from the street or was there some involvement by a scholar of the Dutch language? I don't know.

There are many more examples of action verbs (running, walking, swimming, etc) than introspective verbs (thinking, remembering, etc) because the former are more easily conveyed in pictures. There are many more examples of third person verb forms than first and second person for the same reason.

One of the three native speakers has a strange pronunciation. She makes third person singular verb forms, which almost alway end in "t", sound like they end in "s". For example, "zingt" sounds like its English translation, "sings". I never heard this before. Is it a regional accent, or has she just been speaking English for too long? It's confusing, especially in mode-D.

This product isn't perfect, but I liked it enough to purchase Rosetta Stone Dutch Level II, which I am also enjoying. ... Read more

The Rosetta Stone method replicates this process by presenting vivid, real-life images to convey the meaning of each new phrase. Instead of translating, memorizing, and studying rules of grammar, you actually learn to think in the new language. Vocabulary and grammar are integrated systematically, leading to everyday proficiency. It's the natural way to learn.

The Rosetta Stone Explorer contains 22 lessons for beginning learners with nearly 900 real-life images and phrases spoken by native speakers. It develops all key language skills--listening comprehension, reading, speaking, and writing--while its systematic structure teaches vocabulary and grammar naturally, without lists and drills. Includes previews, exercises, and tests for every lesson, with automated tutorials throughout the program. (Ages 6 and older) ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Learn to speak Mandarin Chinese through complete immersion. The Euro Method is an easy and simple way to learn to speak a second language. Based on the same techniques that allow a 4-year-old child to speak a language long before that same child can read or write, the Instant Immersion Mandarin Chinese CDs teach users to speak Mandarin Chinese quickly. The software provides interactive lessons that truly immerse users in the language. The two CD-ROMs enclosed are from EuroTalk, a European publisher of language-learning software. Talk Now! and World Talk will take users from beginning to intermediate levels using fun and easy-to-follow methods.

Talk Now! Mandarin Chinese is designed for beginners who want to start learning a new language as soon as possible. Whether on a business or vacation trip, or even when meeting a foreign visitor, Talk Now! is the CD to use. By hearing and practicing authentic everyday speech, the user's natural ability for language will develop. The EuroTalk CDs are designed to be fun. The program uses quizzes, games, and stories to help reinforce the lessons learned.

The second CD-ROM, World Talk Mandarin Chinese, is the next level up from Talk Now!, and goes on to the next stage with new activities, added dictation, and a new recording section. Topics covered include the calendar, building sentences, asking directions, and using numbers. With the recording feature, users can hear and compare their voices with those of a variety of native speakers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding bargain, but get a dictionary too
This would be a very good price for just the first of the two CDs. Both CDs allow you to listen to words and phrases from a variety of categories of everyday vocabulary such as time, numbers, colors, and food, and both offer quiz games to test your knowledge. I am still working my way through the first so the second is still beyond me, and I'm concerned that I might not be able to understand the second even after mastering the first. Fortunately there is built in help in English.

The first CD allows you to listen to two different voices (one fast and natural, the other slow and careful) pronounce a starting collection of words and phrases, record yourself speaking them so you can compare, and test your knowledge with simple quizzes of 4 levels of difficulty. In about a month I have learned enough Chinese to impress my Taiwan-born fiancee and now she wants to borrow it!

Caveats: You probably won't have enough vocabulary for comfortable conversation by the end of the first CD. But Chinese is hardly a simple language to learn and you will be amazed at how quickly you benefit from the course. Also, the first CD has some inconsistencies; the two voices actually say different things for some of the words. I used a Chinese-English dictionary to decide which was correct. If you are going to learn the language a good dictionary is a valuable companion reference.

2-0 out of 5 stars Okay for speech, but doesn't help with Chinese characters
This software is okay for learning to say a few basic words and phrases. The variety of activities makes it more interesting than a phrasebook. But it won't help you if you want to learn Chinese characters, which are the more interesting and important part of the language. If you want to learn to read Chinese, you'll need a good textbook and maybe a Chinese reading & dictionary software product like Clavis Sinica.

2-0 out of 5 stars keep shopping
re the first cd, talk now: The girl enunciates well but speaks with a tiawanese accent. In one case, (the ankle) the girl gives the wrong (tiawanese?) word for the body part rather than the mandarin word. The guy slurs his word endings a bit. The cd only has a handful of words, perhaps what you would expect to learn in the first week of a standard college class. The cd makers neglected to pay an artist to draw the pictures that correspond to the sentences so good luck there as well. I think they had a not particularly gifted first grader do the scribbles.
The second cd, world talk, does NOT pick up where the first one left you but jumps ahead by an unbridged leap. There is no real help provided. you find yourself learning which picture matches with which sentence without ever learning what they are actually saying. Futhermore, the second cd is boring and not at all engaging. surely there is better stuff out there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazon has their reviews mixed up.
The Amazon review is for Talk Now! Mandarin by EuroTalk....but the product is Mandarin Chinese by Topics Entertainment. Ignore the Amazon review.

1-0 out of 5 stars If want to learn 5 words...
I was a complete beginner, and wanted to learn Mandarin. I said LEARN, not acquire four or five phrases or words. I mistakenly bought this cheap software (like said in other review, get what you pay for) to begin my learning process. The CD's proved to be better frisbees than tutorials and are gathering dust on my computer desk. If you really wish to learn a language DO NOT buy this software. Translations are sketchy, explanations non-existant, and pronunciations deceptive. You don't know what words of a phrase mean what, that tones are vitally important to Chinese, and they don't even bother with pinyin. I recommend other means of learning language than this piece of software... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A whole new way to learn spanish!
This program takes spanish language learning software to a whole new level. Advanced spanish is an appropriate title for this program since It literally immerses you in the language with an actual spanish soap opera episode. You can practice in a number of ways, as well as take quizzes. Some of the activities include a visually based vocabulary program. In this area of the software the program shows you a still from the movie with an object circled and you name the word in spanish. Others include listening for the missing word in a conversation- harder than it sounds. You can watch the movie with and without spanish subtitles so you can follow along with the script or try to watch it without. Some minor- very minor- technical glitches not really affecting the operation of the program or use of it prevent me from giving this a full 5 stars. But a really great, well rounded buy! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fairly good
I'm still lucky that Italians seem to speak english and like doing so.

The CD did help me understand more and if I had been a good student I think It would have been quite successful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good not so good
I really liked the interactive part of the cd. Makes you actually learn the words via recognition. I have not been able to find any other software that teaches this way. The draw back with this title is how few words are available... I have been searching for upgrades additional cds of words but... so far they dont exist.... great way to learn limited by what is available.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Basic and not intuitive
My wife and I visit Italy often and thought it was time to at least attempt to learn the language. We ordered several books and programs to learn Italian and found the Instant Immersion program to be the worst of the lot. I would not recommend it for anyone that is seriously interested in learning Italian

5-0 out of 5 stars Instant Immersions Italian
Instant Immersion Italian is the best cd that I have found for learning Italian. It is fun and easy. I actually wanted to sit down and learn after just learning numbers and playing the games. It helped me to learn the language on my own and you can't buy that feeling anywhere! This program is a fast and fun way to learn Italian...or any other language too. Classes are boring and they cost too much but this cd is fun and makes you want to learn. I highly recomend this cd and all the other Instant Immersion language cd's. (I'm also learning Japanese. Stick to Italian, trust me.)

1-0 out of 5 stars Too basic...
Childish guessing games..no meat to this learning experience...do not recommend if you are anxious to learn the language...need more substance. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Talk Now Urdu
The Talk Now series is good because they are available in almost any language you can think of. It's one of the few available in Urdu. As for really learning the language, Talk Now falls short. It completely neglects teaching grammar and verb tenses. It teaches many nouns, but is lacking in adjectives and verbs. The only section where you learn any kind sentences is the "phrases" section, but without any knowlege of sentece structure, I had a hard time figuring out all the words of each sentence.
It also doesn't convey Indian or Pakastani culture. For example, half the words in the "food" secition are english. The abundance of english words wastes my time. If you're going to Pakistan, when do you need chopsticks? It should include pakastani foods.
There are other poor odds and ends. Overall it is lacking in verbs, adjectives, grammar, sentence structure, and cultural flavor.
On the other hand, the recording ability is an excellent feature. Being able to hear yourself and compare it to a native speaker is very good for pronounciation. It also includes a bunch of games that makes learing easy and fun. If you are planning on taking a language course or supplement, this program is good for starting you off, but don't count on it advancing you very far. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great!!
This is the first time I have ever been so excited about learning a language. I've tried using just about every other method to learn Finnish (except actually going and living in Finland.) I tried out this program for the first time today and it measures up. The plusses of the program is that you can get English instructions easily if you need them (a safety net) but otherwise the program immerses you into the language. The program feels like you are playing a game but the stinky trick is you are actually learning at the same time (awesome!). The only minus is that I have yet to find a quit button on the World Talk Finnish program (but I tend not to be overly observant or patient) and the Talk Now program had better graphics. Mind you my experience with the Talk Now program is more extensive, but the World Talk program definitely reaches par. Using this program is the best way to learn especially if you have difficulty learning languages using books and tapes and don't have the luxury in enrolling in a Finnish language course. ...
