Amazon.com Review

With the modern PC having a variety of possibilities of which traditional language-learning methods could only dream--voice recognition, video dialogues, and so on--the past few years have seen an extraordinary boom in language-learning software packages. However, as picking through this surfeit can be tricky, it is important to find a reliable brand, and the Learn Now! series is definitely among the best software packages.

The program comes equipped with 2 CDs, one of which has various key sections--useful "survival phrases", fun activities, conversations, and practicing speech against the voice of a native speaker--while the other has a thorough grammar tutorial. This combination is certainly a valuable one for people who are serious about learning a language, and the product is clear and easy to use: in role-plays, phrases are highlighted in a box and their English translations placed underneath, while the voice recognition software allows you to measure your own voice against that of a native speaker, and the games hone the things that have been learnt. Sections are tailored to various activities, such as getting around, going out, and business situations, while at any point you can call up a grammar tutorial which explains a particular point on which you are unsure.

In addition to these sections, the part on survival phrases will be of much use to those who have already reached a basic level. There are several practice dialogues based around commonplace situations--in the hotel, the bar, the airport, etc. Although some of the advice borders on the infantile ("When you decide to travel outside the USA, you will probably need a passport"), much of it is useful, and rounds out what is a well composed package for someone starting out on the road to using the language overseas. --Toby Green, Amazon.co.uk ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Simply an excellent program
This is a great program. Previously I bought another Russian language software program and it was pitiful compared with this one. Anywhere in this program you can right-click on a Russian word and bring up its grammar characteristics. An example might be (noun, feminine, 1st conjugation, possesive case). This is important to know when you are learning what ending a word needs based on that information. You can also hear words pronounced by Russian speakers at full speed or half speed and have the word repeated as many times as needed to imitate it. The only things this program lacks are a dictionary (you can download a free Russian/English, English/Russian dictionary off the internet from Russlang) and a "back" button to go to a previous training sentence. You can tell the program to go to a specific sentence and word (i.e. sentence #202, word #5), but without a printed-out sheet of all sentences how are you to know what sentence #202 says? Even so this is an amazing product and a great deal of work obviously went into developing it and it shows. One piece of advise though. You should also buy a good Russian language textbook to complement this program. Either one without the other will eventually leave you confused somewhere down the line. Just be aware that Russian is a complex language and the more reference tools you have at you side, the easier it will be. I have 3 books and often must read the same topic in all 3 to fully understand it. I give this product 2 thumbs up. If your local library has the book/tape series "Modern Russian 1" printed by the Georgetown University Press. I highly recommend you check out the book for a few weeks. It is a great reference tool. ...

2-0 out of 5 stars Listen russian until your jaw drops.
I approached the russian language under two very different methods: this ultra modern CD-ROM and the old fashioned printed course, a.k.a. book. I am sorry to say that the Learn Russian Now! CD ROM, although impressive and nice, is not definitely the ideal tool for beginners. Someone will probably enjoy this CDROM if he is nearly an expert in russian language and wants to practice conversation and hearing skills. For the beginner, it can be frightening. Open the course and the first suggested section will take you to an intimidating 4 minute dialogue in russian which is supposed to be your first lesson using basic russian structures... basic for whom? Then, you are supposed to review what you just saw. Nice. Lessons are organized thematically (restaurants, how to catch a cab, around Saint Petesburg, etc.) and not by level of difficulty or expertise, so each one of them combines every imaginable verb tense (present, past, future, etc.) and language structure. This means lenghty monologues with incomprehensible russian chatter until your jaw drops or you turn off the computer. I simply could not learn russian using this method, only memorize some useful phrases, but that does NOT mean you are learning the languague.

Then I swtiched to the printed, step-by-step, old fashoned book (New Penguin Russian course VERY recommended!) and I'm glad I did. After dedicating one hour every other day to study my book, I am speaking russian after two months... and practicing online with russian friends :)

2-0 out of 5 stars Not terrible, but definitely not good.
Not terribly expensive, but still not worth it. The Rosetta Stone software is far superior, albeit costly. If you're on a budget and MUST have software and are willing to put up with a klunky interface and poor quality, buy this. Otherwise, save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Language Now!
The LanguageNOW! series happen to be very good. It greatly improves your listening and reading skills. Russian happens to be one of the hardest languages in the world. Even many Russians have a hard time with their language.

As for as Grammar goes, this software puts you on the right track. The only way to actually learn grammar is to buy a grammar book. I suggest Shaum's Outlines: Russian Grammar - it is probably the best!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Program
This program deserves the 5-star rating for several reasons.
1) Has a grammar turtorial (something a lot of language software is lacking)
2) Uses technology to its fullest with video, amazing audio(you can listen to over 10,000 words in Russian) , and voice recognition to help correct your pronunciation.
3) Good conversation practices
4) Extra learning material offered online
5)Uses native speakers

Overall, this program is a very impressive learning system unlike any other out there and I highly recomend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The title says it all
One thing missing from the reviews that may be helpful, is that this line of software is called "Rosetta Stone." Of course this is the infamous tablet that transposed languages, in essence unlocking the key to vocabulary. This program works much the same way, it is a true vocabulary builder. It touches on all aspects of the language, and it DOES require effort. This effort may seem a bit more pronounced than book study, but I personally believe it is that reading off a computer monitor and its interactive nature just make it seem more arduous than a book. The demands of this program, I believe, are no more intense than a serious book on vocab and grammar. Overall I believe this CD delivers the goods quite nicely. It is a bit discouraging at first as there is very little feedback that you're "getting it." This comes later, you see your progress slowly at first, but after time the vocab reviews and constant hearing of the spoken language sink in, and when it does you hardly notice. This offers something like no other product out there, including Talk Now! CDs (which I also recommend). It is quite interactive and when you have mastered it, you have a great ear for the Polish language and a very solid footing in vocubulary that you can use quite naturally. High marks for such an achievement.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too much work, for such little benefit
This software claims on the box "Selected by the Peace Corps the U.S. State Department and NASA!" Which I find interesting since this is definitely NOT a program where you learn the language very quickly or all that effectively.
My main gripe about Rosetta Stone Polish Explorer, is that it can cause more confusion than comprehention. In many cases the pictures are not clear on which item in the picture you are being given the word for. The only way to know which word you are being taught, is to first go through the lesson that is in English. But even this does not help completely, as the Polish lessons have 2 levels, while the English lesson only covers the first level. Personally, I got MUCH more benefit, and faster learning, through the "Instant Immersion" software program. So I would recommend buying that software instead of this one.
ALSO, be aware that there are 29 different languages on EVERY Rosetta Stone Explorer CD, so the only real "benefit" of buying a specific one, is to get the second level of the program. The other 29 languages only cover the first level, and it's all the same pictures regardless of the language chosen.
That's My Opinion, But You're Welcome To It.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous - helps me so much with pronunciation!
I am so glad that I bought this CD. I was preparing to go to Poland for the first time, and I needed something to supplement my phrase books. I picked up this CD and it taught me pronunciation. While the grammer I learned was limited, I really, truely, actually learned it. Months later, I still remember what I learned. Normally, I have a terrible time remembering and learning foreign languages. However, this CD is really involving, and makes it easy to learn the words intuitively.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Learning Tool
This CD-ROM is great for anyone trying to learn basic phrases in Polish. I am a native Polish speaker and I would recommend this CD-ROM to anyone trying to pick up on basic Polish pharase. As far as learning the whole language, you'll need a little more than a CD-Rom.

4-0 out of 5 stars The pros and cons of the Rosetta Stone courses
I have been looking at self study language courses and came across RS. I would urge you to check out its website, because there you can get free sample lessons. There are also different options for the length of courses, and whether you want it online or CD rom.

I find this program quite sneaky and clever - it'll get you to recognise and build upon what you know through recognition and interactive software, so that you will learn just as kids do, figuring out the rules by yourself. I'm personally interested in how my mind puts it all together. Here are some thoughts (and gripes) I have about the RS course:

1. They seem to have one module and translate it into many different languages, forgetting that kangaroos are probably more useful in some countries and non-existent in others.

2. You would probably learn faster if you complemented with another more grammer based course. I am a bit dubious about completely buying the 'learning just like a child learns language' theory. As adults we have the benefit of transfering ideas of abstract rules to help us with our 2nd (or 3rd, etc) language.

3. It isn't totally clear from the picture sometimes what the sentance is saying, but I could 'get the right answer' through elimination even if I didn't totally get what was being said. I solved this by downloading the manual for the "English" RS course, which told me exactly what the equivalent sentance was supposed to be.

4. There is more emphasis on recognition than production, which can be a useful first step. However, this is not the quickest way to learn. I found Pimsleur tapes more useful for breaking down the sounds of the words and really making me think of the sentances and words in context. Here you just have a bunch of pictures. However, compared to the Pimsleur for the same amount of money (that is, if you choose the right type of RS course) you get larger range of volcab. In a nutshell: Pimsleur will teach you to speak. RS will teach you to recognise.

5. It may get tedious after a while because it is structured in the same way. But if you are really interested in learning the language it's in small digestable modules. My strategy is: in one day I will preview lesson 3, do the listen/read test from lesson 2, and the listening test from lesson 1. The next day I will preview lesson 4, listen/read 3, and listen for 2.

6. It is no subsititue for speaking with a native speaker and going there, because the phrases in the modules are still really limited.

7. The writing exercise I find a bit naff and is about sorting out a sentance anagram. Theoretically it has a speech recognition so that you can test your accent, but like the writing because it has limited computer intelligence it can't correct you in a useful manner.

Having said that, I think it is a really decent component for a cram course - which is what I need before I go to Poland - and I think it really helps my volcab. It does mean sitting in front of a computer for many hours. Good luck. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Dutch program I have found.
This Rosetta Stone Dutch program is by the far the best program to learn Dutch. I have tried many and have found them very basic. Some were good but you only learned how to order food and introduce yourself, etc. My wife is Dutch so I was wanting a program to help me along. I have completed Level I and am working on Level II now. When I listen to my wife's family speaking Dutch I can really understand what they are saying and can have limited conversations with them. I notice I learn better when I use the typing portion of this program. I only wished that they would include a help book on the "word order" of Dutch. Some words like "anndoen", you will put the last part of the word "doen" in the first part of the sentence and the first part "ann" at the end of the sentence. It would be very helpful to learn why it is done this way. It is difficult for my wife to explain this. This is a very time consuming program but is much more in depth that any other program I can find and I have bought about 6-7 different ones. If you want to learn Dutch, or any other language, it seems that this is a very well thought out program and is fun to use. It reminds me more of a college level course compared to the other programs I have bought. The pimsleur program is good but is only 5 cassettes and once you get to Holland and say your "Hi's and Bye's" you have spoken all of the Dutch you were introduced to. Maybe if they had the complete 3-Level program like the one for German you would learn more. This Rosetta Stone program is so much more in-depth. Since very few colleges teach the Dutch language in the United States this is about as close as you can come to having a college level course. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An easier way to learn Latin!
As a teacher, I was pleased to see an easy to use format that teaches inductively. It also has the added bonus of including the first book of Cambridge Latin which is widely used in high schools.Would be very helpful to a new Latin student.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Latin Game!!!
Thias game is a lot of fun!! The cross-word puzzles are really fun!!! Whar ever you pay for this game is really worth it!! My only complaint is the game is a little bit slow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't be afraid - jump right in!
LanguageNow!'s total immersion technique, in a very attractive format, gets you going immediately. From the beginning, you are presented with short sentences from one of several simple narratives. The English translation is below. You read the Latin and simultaneously listen to it, and repeat it back with the included microphone. (I like my own Bestbuy earphone/mike set). You can do this with the whole phrase, or one word at a time, over and over if necessary, and there is a slow-it-down feature which I always use, 'cause I'm slow. There are "Pronunciation Meters" you can use to visually analyze your speech patten compared to the speaker in the program. There is grammar information down in the corner if desired, and ganes and other features too numerous to discuss here. The heart of the matter is: if you do this reading-and-hearing-and-saying for 15 minutes a day, as recommended, you CANNOT HELP but begin to absorb the language. You will begin to recognize words and phrases, and experience that indescribable pleasure in the feel of the language rolling off your tongue. You will also begin to see how much of English (65%, the experts say), comes from Latin. Note - this is the Classical Latin of Caesar's time. It differs in pronunciation from Ecclesiastical, or Church Latin, but the reading part is all the same. Included in the Deluxe Edition is another CD with 200 pages of grammar and a 100-language word processor (which you don't need for Latin). LatinNow! does NOT include the traditional conjugation or declension drills so loved by your old teacher, but there are enough of these on the 'Net, free, to keep you busy for the rest of your life. This program does its part. All it requires from you is a few bucks, a small committment of time, and that essential ingredient, the "I'm going to learn this".

2-0 out of 5 stars No help for a beginner
I bought this software in the hope of getting an interactive start withLatin.Instead the tutorial jumps straight into a complicated text withoutlaying down any basics.Perhaps it might be more useful to advancedstudents but I got nothing out of it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor value, not a course
I was very disappointed with this programme. It is one of the worstlanguage programmes I have ever seen.

I have studied Latin before andknow many words and the basic grammar, but even I found it difficult tocope with the total immersion approach. The descriptions of the grammarwere completely inadequate.

This course would be very little use tobeginners or advanced learners; and only a moderate help to intermediatestudents ofLatin. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

It is a credit to Fairfield Language Technologies that its SpanishExplorer is one of the best examples of language-learning software--period. Ifyou are used to the old-fashioned but lamentably persistent grammar-translationmethod of learning languages, Spanish Explorer may surprise you because itinvolves no overt instruction in grammar or lists of vocabulary with Englishtranslations. Instead, it relies on very clever contextualization of Spanishwords and structures with photographs so that you never realize you're learninggrammar. We literally found ourselves speaking and understanding quite a bit ofbasic Spanish in about an hour.

Each graduated lesson works like this: First, you learn a new word by seeing apicture of, say, a dog. You then read the Spanish word for "dog" and hear itspoken: perro. After learning a whole set of words this way, you moveinto self-quizzing mode, where you see just a picture of a boy and have tochoose the right word, either from spoken or written cues. This emphasis onlistening comprehension is fantastic and is one of the components that sets thesoftware apart, but there are also reading and writing exercises.

So how do they cover grammar? Eventually, for instance, you'll seeperro under a picture of one dog and perros under a picture of twodogs. If you are a grammar guru, you might be able to figure out that certainsingular nouns end in o; plural nouns end in os. However, thebeauty is you don't have to be a grammar guru at all because the softwaredoesn't expect you to state rules like that; it expects you only to associate apicture of more than one dog with perros instead of perro.Eventually, you get into longer phrases that cover verbs, adjectives, andprepositional phrases. It's amazingly effortless, especially so for children asyoung as 6.

Caveats: The CD-ROM includes both Mac OS and Windows versions. Your installationwill include the first-level lessons of a couple dozen other languages for free, too, so you have to know that the Spanish word for "Spanish" isEspañol in order to select it from the list. Also, remember thatsoftware is no replacement for Spanish-speaking people, so take what you learnand use it in the world! --Erik Macki ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Introduction to Spanish
I bought this program for my 7-year-old neice and opened it up to "try it out". Well, I enjoyed it so much that I kept it myself and had to buy my neice another copy. The use of photographs and the spoken word make it easy and enjoyable to learn. Some people may be intimidated by the thought of a "total immersion" approach to language learning. But this program is not intimidating at all. It is engaging and fun. It feels like you are playing a game (and learning at the same time). It has inspired me to enroll in a local Spanish class. I also plan to purchase the entire Rosetta Stone Spanish series. (This program covers lessons 1-22 only.) You won't regret buying this program for your child (or yourself)!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rosetta Stone Spanish Explorer
The Rosetta Stone Explorers are intuitive and fantastic! They give 22 lessons of the 92 lessons in Level 1. Explorers are just that: EXPLORERS. This program allows you a trial run of the full program, only the printed script from the full program is missing. The Explorer materials take you to the level of about 3 months of High School language classes. The Level 1 is approximately equal to 2 years of High School or 1 year of University, and level 2 adds 2 more years or High School or 1 more year of University language. This is a real bargain compared to tuition!

I've done the Indonesian Explorer, I have given Spanish to a 62-year-old friend, Japanese to a 9-year-old whose grandfather speaks Japanese, and Portuguese to a 10-year-old whose father speaks Portuguese. My Level 1 Indonesian should be here in a couple of days, my older friend is picking up on Spanish much more rapidly than he did with Pimsleur, and the kid's parents report that they are "hogging the computer" to play their "game". If they stick with it over the Summer break, the parents have the option of ordering the full program at a discount exceeding the Explorer purchase price when they buy Level 1 or Levels 1 & 2.

The only down-side is: Fairfield Language Technologies has discountinued the Explorer (and the PowerPac and the Traveler) series. There will be no more after what is avialable now is sold - unless popular demand changes their minds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Introduction to the Full Course
I've used The Rosetta Stone for a few years, now, quite successfully. From my experiences as a Language Acquisition Tutor, and 11+ year Language Learner, I've found that students who have struggled immensely in the past, whether in classes or on their own, find much success with The Rosetta Stone.

As far as grammar goes, it's true, The Rosetta Stone doesn't teach much. But that's the point! Grammar is one of the hardest aspects of a language for most people, and when you think about it, you were fluent in your native language before you even set foot in a school, or knew what a "transitive verb" was.

The Rosetta Stone teaches language, to paraphrase their ad copy, like you learned your first language. By the time you finish a Level I course, you'll be able to understand a good portion of what native speakers are talking about, whether it be in casual conversation, a radio program, or a movie.

I'd recommend not buying the Explorer course, but going to http://www.NetLLR.com/rosetta-stone.html to read more about the courses, then going to the Rosetta Stone website and trying the free Online Demo to see if it's right for you. If it is, don't throw away your money on the Explorer course, but instead get a Level I, or I & II course. You'll learn far more, and spend less money over time.

In conclusion, Rosetta Stone is perfect for almost anyone wanting to learn a language well, and participate in the daily happenings of the culture surrounding that language.

1-0 out of 5 stars Overrated
This seems like a good program but it is just lacking some very crucial things which I think are necessary for language learning. The lack of verb tenses is extremely frustrating. Tying in with this is the complete lack of teaching grammar. See my problem with this is what's the point of learning the language if you don't learn the rules of it. Good product but fails in some important aspects to teach Spanish. For a good language learning software that also has grammar turtorials check out Spanish NOW by Transparent Language. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product
This CD-ROM has all you need to go from "Beginner" to "Intermediate" level proficiency in French. I couldn't imagine an easier way to learn French. Each phrase and sentence can be repeated as many times as needed in order for you to understand the pronounciation. You can also click on an individual word in the phrase/sentence and hear it repeated apart from the sentence (since all the words in French sentences seem to run together, this is very helpful). Not to mention, you can also slow-down each word/phrase/sentence in order to clearly hear how it sounds. I have some other French self-teaching material, and unlike those, this one teaches you the grammar from the beginning instead of just throwing you into the language (which is very frustrating). I highly recommend this product. If you purchase a book or two in addition to this (such as "English Grammar for Students of French" by Morton) you'll be set. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Though a bit disjointed and somewhat confusing at times, TransparentLanguage's Learn Russian Now! is an intriguing, multifaceted two-CD package thateducates in an entertaining yet fully immersive environment. The programpresumes that its students have had at least minimal exposure to the languageand the Cyrillic alphabet, or are otherwise immediately ready to undergo itsstiff learning curve; however, those who are serious about understanding Russianin its written form and speaking it with a moderate degree of proficiency shouldfind the software quite enlightening.

At the heart of the program is a group of four increasingly advancedsections--Fundamental Russian, Getting Around Russia, Survival Phrases forRussian, and St. Petersburg: A Window on Europe--each of which includes severaldiverse sub-elements. Getting Around Russia, for example, features acirca 1980s mini-movie chronicling the misadventures of an American businessmantrying his best to adapt to the country and the language. The video quality isgrainy and the audio portion marred by a mid-frequency hiss, but the tale isboth funny and instructive.

After watching the movie, students are encouraged to access various exercises, including word and sentence pronunciation drills, online quizzes, andedutainment games such as crossword puzzles and word scrambles. The program alsooffers numerous visual and practical aids, including a nifty waveform displaythat compares the pupil's version of a particular word or syllable with that ofthe original Russian-speaking instructor. Unlike a virtual school, Learn RussianNow! does not chart overall progress or grades, yet many of its elements featurehigh score tallies and visual indicators based upon aptitude and performance.

The program isn't structured linearly, and therefore may frustrate those wholike to follow a set path, but for those ready to speak and recognize thecharacters, words, and common phraseology of the Russian language, Learn RussianNow! is a fine educational enhancement. --Gordon Goble ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars In Russian: "Ne Ochen Horosha!"
I must say that I can't suggest this software if you are looking to supplement a regular Russian language course. I bought Learn Russian Now! thinking that its record/playback features would help me with my accent, and that the dictionary would help me translate readings for class. Unfortunately, it didn't have a dictionary that looked up Russian to English efficiently, so it was impossible to pick a word from a homework assignment and find its meaning/pronunciation--you can only look up/hear words in the programs dialogs. Also, the playback feature would say my accent was perfect at times that my (human) tutor would cringe. If you don't have access to a real life person, this may be the next best thing to teach you Russian. However, if you are trying to find something to help you out with a class, a regular old dictionary might be a better investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great program! But frustrating at first,
I got this for my 14th birthday, and for the first day, I was worried it waste of money, but I assure it's not. The best way to start (I think anyway) is to go to the fundamental, and go part one, part two, part three...It's long and slow, but if your as serious about learning Russian as I am, you'll get it. (Once the basics are learned, understanding it is a lot easier so later on when your trying to memorize things, it won't be so hard) But if your still not sure you want to learn Russian, don't bother buying it. Russian is hard! With a whole new alphabet. if you just want to learn a second language, go for Spanish or something.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not good enough
Crashes regularly on Windows 2000. Does not have a module with the sounds of the alphabet, which makes it hard to get started. Overall, just lacks organization.

It will probably turn out to be a good supplement to another program, but by itself, is not enough to get started learning Russian.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Cold War is Back, Comrade! Ah, the Good Old Days....
I bought this neat item after struggling with rewinding and fast forwarding Russian language tapes for the last couple years. Needless to say, I didn't get very much past the conversational ability of a Russian infant. Even though I haven't had this product very long, I can't say much yet about the speech recognition and whatnot but I'm already making larger strides than I ever did with those tapes, let me tell you! Repeating words and sentences is a snap, all you have to do is doubleclick. Want them to speak slower? No problemo, my friend! They have that function in there too. This thing will definately save you from the nightmare of tapes. Before you know it, you'll be shouting Russian and beating your shoe against a podium at the United Nations with the best of them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good program.
This is a very good program to learn Russian in because it gives you the benifit of being able to instantly hear what you are looking at. Not only that but you get instant translations and full dialog on one screen. You can "bookmark" certain words, or write down thoughts that occur to you as you learn. It's a very good program and will help you learn quickly if you get into it. Learning a language is not 'easy', but it doesn't have to be the most difficult thing in the world either. This program is the best aid I've had in my studies of Russian so far. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 STARS
Portuguese Now will help you achieve fluency in Portguese. I was very happy and impressed with this software and I am really considering looking at some of Transparent Language's other language products. Portuguese Now deserves the 5-star rating for the following reasons: 1) It has the content for all ability level speakers- beginners to experts. 2) It teaches you pronunciation which is crucial for being understood by fluent speakers. 3) It does not leave beginners in the dark- gives you places to start such as an Aplhabet Reference and Grammar Turtorial. 4) Very impressive conversation practice methods.
5) Tons of useful vocabulary and phrases. 6) Very good practice games/activities and methods.
Portuguese Now offers an excellent language learning program and I would recomend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Travel
Recently I traveled to Portugal for a vacation and wanted to be able to converse some in Portuguese. I bought this program to do so and found it to be very good. I learned a great deal of Portuguese in a short period of time with this software. The conversation practices were my favorite part because I was able to learn many phrases and things to say in various different situations such as ordering dinner at a restuarant or asking for directions (this was very useful on my trip). I also really liked the video and audio features which were superb in every way. Even though I only used this for travel I learned way more than I thought I would so I would recomend this program for any reason- work, travel, education, ect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective
Portuguese NOW is an effective way to engage in learning Portuguese. All of the features work well together to improve the many aspects of learning a new language. Overall, I just can't find a way to express how good this program really is for learning Portuguese.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Language Learning Product
Recently I decided to take an exchange student from Portugal into my home and thought it would be more friendly to learn some Portuguese so I could talk to him in his native language. I ended up buying Portuguese Now to help me learn the language and I was surprised at how good it really worked. I was able to really work on the fundamentals of learning a language through various games, practice conversations, videos and more. One of the most intresting features I found was a Pronunciation Meter that measures your pronunciation versus a native speaker's. This product worked well for me and it was definitely worth the purchase. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Huge Amount of Content
I was extremely impressed with what Polish Now had to offer in the means of content. Thousands of useful vocabulary and phrases which are taught through many ways such as games, dictation ect. I really liked the feature that allows you to slow the speaking of a word down so you can really hear the correct pronunciation well. The grammar tutorial that is included is very helpful. To me it seems like Transparent Language covered every aspect needed to learn and advance my ability to speak Polish. This program also makes great use of video and audio to help forward your learning. When all is said and done this software is well worth the buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Product
This product by Transparent Language excels in teaching Polish. I would recomend this program for many reasons.
First of all they use many methods to teach such as games, conversation practices, and reading/speaking in Polish, ect. Secondly, they give you the tools to learn the basics of Polish such as a Grammar tutorial, alphabet reference, word dictation, ect. Another thing about Polish Now that I really appreciated was the vast amount of content(meaning language) that was in the final product. There were practice conversations for many situations and you could hear every Polish word said in the program. Finally, the depth of the program's features are truely amazing. It goes as far as allowing you to compare your pronunciation of words to the pronunciation of a native speaker's words.
Transparent Language did an excellent job with this product and I highly recomend it to anyone looking to learn Polish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good way to learn Polish
This software teaches Polish really well. I really enjoyed all the review/practice games. The audio and video features are superb. This product is excellent at what it does and I love it. My recomendation is to look here to start learning Polish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn to Speak Polish
I spoke several foreign languages( Spanish, Italian, German) before picking up Polish Now and I must say this is a great way to learn a new language. Every other language I learned was in a classroom setting but Polish Now changed this. Everything I needed was in one program and it was very sucessful at teaching the basics. The games and other activities provided for hours upon hours of needed practice. The amount of practice and learning that can be done through this program is immense and very interactive. I was able to learn the basics of Polish and many situational phrases very easily. From there the program lead me into the more advanced areas of learning the Polish Language and did so quite sucessfully. I would recomend this program to anyone who wanted to try and learn another language.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just... a terrible method.
This is just bad. That says it all. It throws you into a shark tank, with EVERYTHING being in Polish, from beginning to end. The only thing I was able to absorb was the Polish alphabet. Even learning the alphabet took me days. The book is a much better way to go when learning a language. This is too fast paced, spoken too quickly, and absolutely no good for beginners. Only people who know an intermediate amount of Polish will find this good.

Pros:
Easy to learn alphabet, with practice

Cons:
Too fast paced
Everything written in Polish from start to end
No Polish/English dictionary
NO GOOD GRAMMAR HELP (biggest problem)
Speakers talk to fast, making much of the talks sound like jibberish, especially if you are new to the Polish tongue

Overall, just plain BAD. Transparent Language's way to approach language learning just doesn't work. The book is a much better method. Just take a class with the book and it will be MUCH easier and less stressful to learn another language. And if you choose to use computer software, DO NOT use Transparent Language products. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Learn Arabic!!!
Arabic Now is a very good software when it comes to language learning. I was intrested in trying to learn a new language(s) and decided to try a different approach other than taking classes and I am very glad I tried this out. Arabic Now might seem a bit imposing at first but that is only because it has so much to offer. Most other language software out there lacks some crucial feature or aspect of the language but this program seems to cover everything from grammar to vocabulary to pronunciation to reading/writing and listening skills. With all this exposure to Arabic my ability to use the language increased rapidly and I was very satisfied with the results. Arabic Now is a great way to teach yourself Arabic!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is good
This is a good product for language learning. I used Arabic Now as a supplement for an Arabic class but ended up learning more with the software than in class. It has all the content to either start as a beginner or at more advanced levels but either way it has a lot to offer. The list of features is huge with such things as a Grammar Tutorial, Pronunciation Analysis, tons of games, conversation practice, useful phrases, and too much more to list. I recomend Arabic Now because it worked for me and is very well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't Get Enough
I can't get enough of this stuff it is too good to be true. I thought it would be much harder to teach myself a new language than it would be to take a class but I found this software program and it works very well. I've been able to learn so much from this and there is just so much more I haven't even touched upon yet. In my opinion, this is language software that really works so if you want to start speaking Arabic try it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learned Arabic from a Computer
I was able to learn Arabic with this program on my own time. Being a businessmen who travels to the Middle East quite often, learning to speak Arabic was a useful skill. From the start I was able to establish the basics and then move on to more difficult aspects. Arabic Now is a very interactive method to learning Arabic. I was able to have practice conversations which improved my speaking skills drastically. This program features pronunciation tests/meters that allow you to see if you are pronuncing the words right. The games are good practice and really add to the learning experience. I really liked this program and think it works well if you are looking to learn Arabic. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good addition to your arsenal
I like this program. It should not be the only aid used in learning Japanese, though. It DID help my pronounciation a bit. You can hide the translation boxes to see what you do or don't understand while the program plays.

This program does NOT use Japanese syllabry; it uses Romaji instead. When playing the games or quizes you have to spell romaji correctly. I wa never good at the type of romaji they use (ie I prefer to use "o-" rather than "oo"). It has a characture chart, but there are better ways to learn Hiragana and Katakana.

All the dialogs are good, though. They do not teach grammer, or explain verb conjugation. For these reasons, it is best to be studying another way and use this program as a passive review, or practice.

...AGAIN, use his to supplement your studies only.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn Japanese
This program is so great!!! Not only does it allow you to learn Japanese but you can go at your own pace unlike many other ways to learn a language. My favorite feature is the interactive conversation practices which simulate a life like conversation between you and the computer. The amount of Japanese that is attainable through this is incredible. The practice games are all very fun and enjoyable. Good product and great buy overall!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless. Absolutely worthless.
Save your money.

The interface is god-awful, buggy as hell, and the program clearly was rushed out for production. Little thought has been put into this program.

The games are cheesy, stupid and boring.

However, one cool feature was a section with extremely short video segments with the corresponding Japanese (in romaji) scrolling on the left side. I would pay good money for a program that did just that in more extensive amounts.

Hope this helps prevent people from wasting their $39.99 on this program.

1-0 out of 5 stars Learn Japanese? Don't waste your money!
I was looking for a product that would help me learn some basic Japanese - a few words and phrases. Instead, I got the worst interface imaginable... and I get to see a lot of bad interfaces in my job as Information Architect. I've used a couple of different language CD products as primers to upcoming foreign trips and both were wonderful by comparison. The 'Bonus CD' that comes with this package has a grammar checker for every language EXCEPT Japanese... perhaps that makes sense of the editorial review that mentions "Learn Japanese Now! also adds online features that create an interesting and authentic atmosphere, making learning ITALIAN fast, fun, and highly effective." Italian? Well, it certainly doesn't make learning Japanese the slightest bit fun or effective.

Do yourself a favor, when it comes to "Learn Japanese Now! 9.0" keep your credit card in your wallet.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutly A waste of money and time
This program is HORRIBLE! If you already know Japanese, then it will be great for you, since it is all written in HUGE Japanese with a small translation guide in the corner. It doesn't accually explain anything, it just gives you some words and says "say these". DON'T BE FOOLED!!! I wish I could give this a negitive 99999999999999999 star rating!!! ... Read more
