1-0 out of 5 stars Lots of bugs, packaged with unfriendliest customer service
Bought originally 10.1 version , then downloaded update since I am using Panther now. FAXstf X 10.5 constantly crashes, or cuts incoming faxes off in the middle. Called customer service (no 800 number - 20 min hold time) - a very unfriendly customer "service" agent explained that since I didn't buy FAXstf X for Panther, but downloaded the update, I do not qualify for customer support.
I use a lot of different software products for OS X, but this is the most problematic product with the worst customer service I have ever experienced.
Well done - SmithMicro!

Amazon.com Review

If you're running a small business but aren't ready to sink asmall fortune into a complex voice messaging system, then HotFaxMessageCenter Pro provides an extensive solution to your voice mail andfaxing needs.

Running on a Mac--with a supported voice and fax modem--HotFaxMessageCenter Pro lets you set up a multiple-tiered voice mail system inminutes. You can organize your voice mail by department or service withmailbox folders that can contain three mailbox types: standard (containsan outgoing message and stores incoming calls), info only (contains onlyoutgoing messages), and fax on demand (sends a fax to a number enteredby the caller). You can set secondary outgoing messages that are used atcertain times (outside of business hours, for example) and can even havethe MessageCenter notify you by phone or pager of messages awaiting yourattention. There is a speakerphone--unfortunately not supported by theiMac's modem--and support for caller ID and call forwarding if yourmodem and phone system are compatible.

The bundled FAXstf Pro handles faxing, and although it's a separateapplication the packages are well integrated. You also get FAXstf Pro'sfull feature set: fax from any application in 256 shades of gray forstellar document reproduction, easily organize faxes in the browser, anduse tools to immediately make notes on received faxes (handy if you wantto quickly fax back comments). With HotFax MessageCenter Pro yourbusiness can easily sound bigger--and better. --Jack Gardiner ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Program will NOT work with MAC OS 9
Sales@SmithMicro.com June 2, 2004

SmithMicro, answered as follows, when I complained that the program did not work and asked for a refund.

Unfortunately, Hot Fax Message Center Pro for Mac has been discontinued on the count of too many compatibility problems.
FAXstf 6.0.3 is still featured on our web site for $59.95, upgrade $39.95. This is sotfware strictly for sending/receiving faxes via your MAC running OS 9.

Do not waste your money on this program!

4-0 out of 5 stars It does the job (mostly)
I've had very few problems with this software; mostly, using a US Robotics external voice modem, the caller ID isn't supported (which would be neat, as it can display incoming calls as a sticky). I was delighted that the program would let me record voice messages using the Andrea USB microphone I'd acquired with ViaVoice, for very clear messages.

The best deal is, the program comes bundled with Fax STF version 5, but that package had problems, so there is a free upgrade available from SmithMicro that will take the version all the way to 6.0.5., which bought alone is only $10 less than the entire HFMS + STF package. STF 6.0.5 is a mature full-featured fax program.

The other disappointment is HotFax originally would discriminate calls and pass off incoming faxes automatically to Fax STF. That feature seems to have been removed, even from the PDF Manual, though mention is made of it in online help docs.
And, the fax on demand feature is very slow for the incoming caller, but it does work. All in all lots of powerful features for a budget-priced program.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works fine for me...
I have been using this software for about a year on my iMac DV. It has worked fine, and has more than paid for itself by allowing me to discontinue my phone company voicemail. I hope this, or another product with voicemail capabilities is developed for OS X.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pure agony!
OK, I'm calmed down enough now to write a review that will not offend younger or more sensitive viewers....

I've used easily two or three dozen software packages in my life, probably more. HotFax is easily the worst I've ever come across. My short time with it was a trip through...well, through sheer torment. After I'd spent my evening installing it, I tried to get online to register it. HotFax had toasted my modem. According to my computer, I didn't even HAVE a modem after HotFax got through. Going all through the documentation didn't produce any clues. Their help desk had gone away. The middle of the night, and I was all alone with a toasted modem. As last resort, I uninstalled EVERYTHING having to do with HotFax. It's easily UNinstalled; it's only saving grace. That finally brought my modem back online, although it froze up again when I tried to access their website.

I can't find my receipt, and I just hope my friendly local store (where I buy most of my stuff) will take it back, anyway. I'm through with it. The only reason my review gave it one star is because I didn't have the option of zero stars.

My advice: go elsewhere! Don't put yourself through what I just went through. There's *gotta* be a better fax package somewhere! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware
This software has majot bugs in that it will cut the bottom of your page also it will not discern letter from legal size of incoming fax and to make things worse, Smith Micro was aware of this problem at publishing time....

1-0 out of 5 stars keep looking, this is not the one for you
I spent several hours yesterday trying to install this program and never did get it running. It simply does not work consistently. It crashes Appleworks most of the time and when it doesn't, it only successfully sends a fax about one in 6 tries. The rest simply vanish into the netherworld of lost data. I finally gave up and am going to try CoMa,Fax Express, eFax or one of the many others. Another reviewer had said this was the ONLY fax program available for OS X which is not true - there are several. I haven't had a chance to try any of the others yet, so can't give recommendations, but a quick Google search came up with quite a few. Tucows gives FaxExpress five cows, so that will probably be my first stop.

In any case, I can not get this to work with the latest version of OS 10.2.whatever (using the latest update from Smith Micro) and am giving up on Smith Micro... I was able to use it (sometimes) under OS 10.1, but even then it had problems. Another big disappoinment was the fact that I could not import my fax numbers from FAXstf for OS 9 (which is a real drag as I have hundreds of numbers in my fax phonebook). It is integrated with the Apple Address book (rather then having it's own phonebook) which is kind of funky as it makes for a lot of unneccessary steps. To send a fax, I have to scroll down the file menu to print, then go down the pop-up list to set the address, then open the address book, THEN click on the address I want and move it into the FAXstf menu. THEN, one has to set all the other preferences (like rather or not you want a cover letter or even something as simple as rather or not to put a 1 before long distance numbers) each and every time. It is a real pain not to be able to set general fax preferences and be done with it).

I used FAXstf for OS 9 for a long time and was very satisfied with it. It's too bad their version for OS X is so lame.

1-0 out of 5 stars Never got it to work correctly
After much back-and-forth with Smith Micro tech support, I was never able to send or receive a fax. This software is not ready for prime time, and was a waste of my money.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best ( And Only) Fax Program for OS X
For some strange reason, Apple has neglected to include the ability to easily fax documents with your computer in OS X. FAXSTF X is currently the only publisher of software so it's hard to compare it.

One of the most important things that the installation neglects to mention is don't install the software anywhere else except in the default location. Even though you have that option, if you do install in another directory or disk, the update will not recognize it and you'll have to delete and reinstall it again. And since FAXSTF gives itself root ownership, deleting it takes a little work. So install it into the default location.

The second thing is to make sure you download the most current version. The version on disk is for versions up to OS 10.1.2. If your use OS 10.1.3 or higher you must download the update from their site.

That said, the installation into the default directory is easy and painless. So it the update (which requires a re-boot of the machine), but must be downloaded .

Once the program is installed, faxing is easy - go to the printing center and add the modem as a printer. Now from any application, you simply select the fax as a printer and you're done. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Less is more
This is the identical, acclaimed software that usually comes bundled with the purchase of a Global Village internal or external modem. It's been reconfigured with special modem scripts and device instructions to work with the stock modem pre-installed in your Mac. Compared with FaxSTF, the fax software bundled with most new iMacs, GlobalFax is obviously superior. Although at first glance it seems to lack some of FaxSTF's features, it's more elegant, intuitive, stable, and therefore Mac-like. The most often used components of the addressbook and setup software are neatly packaged in the same dialog box, and the progress bar appears in the Mac menu instead of cluttering up the screen. It can be configured to sense the difference between a regular incoming call and a fax. When you've received a fax, a small icon flashes in place of the AppleMenu icon. Otherwise operation is mostly transparent. There are a few things I could gripe about. I wish there were a preference to keep the last phone destination loaded. The look of the interface hasn't changed in years - it could use a cosmetic facelift. But for roughly 40 bucks I'd say this is a really worthwhile improvement, especially if you tend to fax to and from your Mac a lot. ... Read more
