5-0 out of 5 stars I've tried them all and this one is IT!!!
With an impending vacation to Paris, I wanted to become familiar with the French language, having never studied it before. I've read and listened to nearly every major French language program out there, including Barron's, Berlitz, Michel Thomas, Living Language French, Teach Yourself French and Instant Immersion. Smart French is by far the best, both in value and in what it teaches. I couldn't understand why after studying these other methods, when I watched a French film, I could understand little to nothing of what was being said. After purchasing Smart French and working each of the interactive lessons, I finally get it. What is taught in the textbooks is not the way the French actually speak. They contract so much that the written French is quite different from the spoken French!

A child learns a language first by hearing it spoken and mimicking the sounds, then by attaching meaning to the words. This is what Smart French does. It teaches you to hear first, repeat the sounds that you hear and translate later. First you learn to hear, then speak and finally to understand. All the other methods teach basically the same way and method, while Smart French is very different. I wholeheartedly recommend Smart French!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a stand-alone product
This is an excellent tutorial in spoken French, but falls a little short in one or two regards. For example, it could *really* benefit from a vocabulary list. The French and English are placed side by side, but there are numerous occasions wherein the English translation fails to include entire words from the French, leaving the user to figure out what the French words mean from context, which words mean what, or running to a dictionary (which are notoriously short on idiomatic expressions). While language is certainly learned in this manner by children, it can be frustrating for the student of French who wants to learn quickly. A vocabulary list would solve this problem. Also, because the CD-ROM is set up in a non-linear fashion, while listening to the CDs one has to hear the same phrases repeated over and over ("we suggest you follow our approach" and "this is called liasion" come to mind), which becomes tiring. Having said that, I highly recommend this series for anyone who is studying/has studied French and wants to know how to *speak* French. I use it in conjunction with Learn in Your Car series (a terrific vocabulary builder), and a free resource online, "Chloe ou Les aventures d'une Parisienne." But if you are a beginner, you will certainly need something in addition to this series.

5-0 out of 5 stars The SmartFrench CD=Remarkable Tool to Learn French
With the SmartFrench CD, I have finally found the tool I searched for, to help me practice speaking French the way native speakers do. Through a series of interesting interviews with charming and engaging speakers, one can choose the level of expertise from beginner to advanced to practice speaking and understanding. The various levels maintain the challenge for the student. The CD is easy to use. I appreciate that the steps in the process were outlined and all I needed to do was to follow them. However, one can also choose to skip steps and still benefit from the practice with the CD. I definitely recommend the CD for all students of French who want to understand and be understood. Thanks Christian!

Over the years I have tried many ways to learn French, including tapes, CDs and individual instruction, with limited success. SmartFrench has created a unique and effective way to learn which dramatically increases confidence and comprehension. Just a few lessons using the SmartFrench techniques made my last trip to France an entirely different experience! I would recommend SmartFrench to anyone who wants to understand and speak French. ... Amazon.com Review

Who says the book is always better? The American Sign Language Dictionary is a terrific example of how much better some things are in multimedia. Author Martin L.A. Sternberg has also published the esteemed but not-as-fun print version of this reference title. We're sticking with the CD.

The software features four modules: a QuickTime video dictionary, fingerspelling, an overview of American Sign Language, and a well-designed self-testing area. The dictionary is both a learning and reference tool for 2,600 words, with intuitive video rewind and replay controls. Search for the specific words you need, or just browse alphabetically. After studying up, take a test to see how you're doing--this is the software's real asset. And for language geeks, the overview gives more grammar information as well as Internet links. This is likely the only module children will probably enjoy less than adults.

Overall, this is an excellent resource for anyone trying to learn or maintain ASL skills, with equal applicability in classrooms and at home. One caveat: like any foreign language, ASL has its own grammar, slang, and even regional dialects that no CD-ROM resource can exhaustively cover, so use the software as a basis for getting out and interacting with the ASL community. --Erik Macki ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference, not so sure about a tutor though.
This program works great as a reference, but don't look to it as a Mavis Beacon-esque tutor to teach you Sign Language from the start, or have I just not found that section? The program is a little confusing to navigate. But after about 10 mins of exploring I think I found everything there is to do on the disk.

A lot of people are complaining about software issues with this CD-ROM. In order to see the video and everything properly (I'm running Win98) I had to Uninstall my current Quicktime (5.0 I think) ENTIRELY in Add/Remove Programs and THEN install the program and ITS version of QT (2.0). Then it worked and I was free to re-install 5.0. The two vers. of quicktime are not conflicting and are performing their own duties on their own (2.0 for ASL CD and 5.0 for movie watching, Netscape, etc) without any problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect except I have a question?
This software works great, I've never ever had a problem and I think its weird how so many have. The best part I beleive, besides the explainations and the videos, is how it memorizes every sign I look up, so I can then test myself later. This option comes in really handy. The question I have for whoever might be able to answer this is, Does the ability to download new signs every month work? As of right now, I would say that the software is old enough that it does not work, But maybe I am wrong, please let me know. Thanks.. I think someone or some company should come out with a new software just like this one, with more of todays technology, but they must have the option of memorizing every signed looked up for further testing, for I feel that is a really important quality in this product, and I use it over other dictionary softwares I own.

3-0 out of 5 stars American Sign Language on CD Rom
ASL onCD Rom has great videos of each sign which can be repeated as often as you need and at your own pace. The explanations are also written but do not always match the video. In order to see the sign you must type in the word. You are not able to type in a description of a sign and find out what it means. This is an important missing part. The fingerspelling section is good for beginners but not for those who need practice in speed.

1-0 out of 5 stars don't make the mistake I did
I bought this from amazon.com. Once I received it I installed it on my mac powerbook 3400c running os 9. It ran horribly, the quicktime images overan half of the screen window of the program so it was impossible to use on my mac. Because it also has a windows version of itself on the cd I then installed it on my husband's pc. It ran much better on his pc (which upset me even more since it is supposed to be able to run on a mac), however the screen was still very small, the quicktime images choppy and the viewing area incredibly small. After trying to see if I could tweak it on both the pc and mac I have had dismal success with it. Knowing what I know now I would not have bought it. The software that runs this program from the cd is achingly old as well.

1-0 out of 5 stars Is it me or the software...
Might just be me, but I find the software to be "dead" on my computer. I can access the dictionary, but the video does not come up at all. Perhaps my system is too new (Windows 98). I really want to learn to sign, but find this product to be tedious (and out of date??). ... Read more

Ideal for students, this CD-ROM version of Merriam-Webster's perenniallypopular dictionary and thesaurus hits the mark with a fast and friendlyinterface and a comprehensive database that includes more than 500,000entries.

As in previous editions of the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, the content here moves well beyond simple words and etymologiesto include famous political and cultural figures from world history, placenames, classical allusions, and some of the latest scientific terminology (amust for any college student). Browsing through, we even found numerous entriesfrom areas as diverse as theoretical physics and literary theory--there's trulysomething for everyone here. But, if users crave more information, they can linkto the Web for many entries and hear a real speaker pronounce more than 100,000entries--particularly useful for difficult words and words with non-Englishorigins.

Installation of this CD was truly effortless, and we found the program'sinterface to be instantly useful; search and navigation capabilities are a realstrength. In addition, users can search for clues to crossword puzzles (byinputting words with missing letters) and anagrams--and even more esotericoptions, such as cryptograms (where letters are substituted with others byshifting positions along the alphabet). Better yet, users can move betweenthesaurus and dictionary effortlessly.

Generations of students have relied on Merriam-Webster to inform their writingand reading through college, and this revised electronic edition is sure tocontinue the tradition through the digital age. --Rich Dragan ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Necessary Tool
Since I updated from Word 95 to 98 in October, 2000, I have had a great deal of difficulty accessing a usable list from the built-in Thesaurus; plus I discovered that the dictionary is not nearly as complete and easy to use as in the previous version of Word.

I am a writer, and though I own twenty or so dictionaries in hard back, I required a tool that was easier to carry with me on the road than my back breaking load of books. I needed access to the many varieties of words and their second or third meaning, as well as other words with similar meanings. Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary & Thesaurus program link directly into Word; so, with the click of the button I have a thorough and user-friendly link to my Word World.

I also am an Editor. It is imperative that I know what the meaning is of a word that one of my client uses, so if it is unfamiliar or not obvious, I now have the means to quickly review alternative definitions and edit a work with the writer's choice in mind.

This is an excellent program from a renown source. The only aspect that bothers me is that when I click on a word in my document, the program inserts it again and adds a paragraph break; this means that once I check it I then have to make the correction manually by both retyping the misspelled word and deleting the second entry and line break.

This caused me to give it a 4 star rather than 5 rating.

4-0 out of 5 stars sufficient for most people
I've been using this for sometime, and until now, I've found all the words I was looking for. I used to have Encarta dictionary and I feel that both Encarta and Merriam-Websters are equally good - both have a thesaurus and both have audio of the pronounciations. Some words have examples of proper usage in a sentence - but I would have been more satisfied if all the words had it. Not a big problem for me since I tend to look up words as soon as I see them in an article (is'nt that one of the main reasons that you get a CDROM version of the dictionary - so that you dont slack off?!). Definitely much more bang for the buck than Encarta dictionary(>$... for the deluxe pack that includes the dictionary).

2-0 out of 5 stars Regretted buying
Dificient contents as a paid computer based material. I was expecting this MWCD would be more full coverage dictionary rather than a thinny handdy reference. Lacking examples and ediums, it only offers short definitions of words which is not eye-catchingly displayed though by the way. Relatively easy install and access, yes I agree on that. But it did bump with my Windows ME and word 2000 several times and I needed to boot-up again once in a while. Slow pop up was another pain. You may want the definition boxs to come up in 2 seconds when you have COMPUTER DICTIONARY INSTALLED, not ten seconds chewing your finger and listening your hard drive deadly spinning. I also felt crooked that there are many free on-line dictionaries with comparable quality(actually I feel them better) including pronounceation. One virtue of this MWCD is it plays on and with word processing software. With a few mouse clickings, you can consult and find right on working paper.

5-0 out of 5 stars High quality and easy to use
The Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary & Thesaurus computer program (on CD) is an excellent value. This program is very useful for anyone who types a lot on his/her computer or is a writer. This software is very easy to use. Once you install the dictionary you can get started right away with searching for words. The interface is intuitive and simple, and there are a huge number of words to search from.

There are also many valuable options that come with this program. You can look up homophones and synonyms. If you have a jumbled word like "DOIMSW" you can quickly use the option for "Jumble" option and find out that the word is "WISDOM" (or if you have letters like "RETINAS" you'll find numerous words). You can search for words that rhyme with each other. You can even search for words from specific dates (like 1777). If you don't know the exact spelling of the word there's a few neat options that you can learn to find words (involving special characters like *,&,^,!).

This dictionary also is very convenient because you don't need the CD to run the dictionary. You can just install it and then quickly use the program anytime. If you want to hear pronunciations, however, you need to use the CD unless you install all the sound. The pronunciation guide is very useful and the sound is realistic.

The dictionary provides both entertainment and education for me. I find myself just playing around with the program, typing in random letters to see if there's a jumble, looking up synonyms, listening to the pronunciations for vulgar words, and just browsing the vast number of entries. I'm confident that buying this dictionary is a wise investment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Merriam-Webster's Collegiate & Thesaurus
An excellent doctoral professor recommended Merriam-Webster because it's the standard for APA and other professional associations. Most importantly, Merriam-Webster provides linguistically correct definitions as opposed to politically correct definitions like some of the other more conservative dictionaries. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Famously large in size and comprehensiveness, Britannica isprobably the world's most famous encyclopedia, in print since the mid-18thcentury. The 2002 DVD version is just as comprehensive, and includes all 32volumes found in print, as well as a dictionary and world atlas. However, theDVD version has the advantage of fitting into a much smaller binding, and onjust one disc.

The core of the software is as one would expect: Britannica's vaststorehouse of knowledge and information, with entries on practically everythingin existence. The articles and entries themselves are authoritative andinteresting, each littered with hyperlinks to other related topics of interest, and include articles by people as renowned and diverse as Einstein, Robert LouisStevenson, and Harry Houdini. Layered on top of this impressive core are relatedmultimedia clips, both audio and visual, including panoramas and tours.

Britannica is designed like a Web site, with a home page that's alwayseasily accessible. From this, three main ways of accessing this treasure houseof information are offered--Search, A-Z Britannica, or Knowledge Navigator. These are housed within the same pop-up window with tabs at the top, so userscan search once and click between all three of these search results.Britannica has also indexed thousands of quality Web sites that arereturned as part of each search, which adds a whole new depth of exploration.

Britannica software also shines with regard to helping you organize yourown research. You can take a note about a particular item, delegate yourpersonal bookmarks, or collate and layout your collections in an attractive, publishable format.

In addition to the vast repository of knowledge, Britannica's softwarealso includes the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary (10th edition), aworld atlas with statistics and facts, and, a particular favorite of thisreviewer, a visually pleasing Timelines feature. Chart the developments in aparticular area dating back to 100,000 B.C. You can display each developmentalongside the others if you wish, or display a single topic, from art toarchitecture to medicine.

This is fascinating software, is rendered well using Java, and, unlike other CDencyclopedia offerings, has more substance than style. Although a little bitdifficult to navigate at first, it's both easy and pleasurable once understood.Researchers, quiz fans, students, or people who simply enjoy reading andlearning will find this software a joy. --Alison Jardine ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent content. Bug in the installation process
Just as some of the buyers have complained here in Amazon.com, the "convenient" installation in this Britannica DVD doesn't work. Obviously, this is due to a bug in the program. So I have to keep the DVD always in the computer, an inconvenient option. The multimedia is not as bad as some Encarta enthusiasts claimed. This DVD has great content and is good for adults and researchers. When I click "Islam," I get pages after pages of articles. You don't get that much from Encarta.

Verdict: Good for people 18 and above. Kids may not find it interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Encyclopedia on the Market Today
I bought my first Encyclopdia Britannica CD 2.0 on September 13, 1995. Looking at the invoice in front of me now, it cost me exactly $522.59 (including tax, shipping and handling). I upgraded to the Britannica CD 98 Standard Edition couple years later.

Subsequently, EB had been releasing a more powerful DVD version just for the Windows platform and the same thing for the Mac is nowhere to be found. I don't know how many times I had been calling EB to release a DVD for the Mac with no avil. Being a diehard Mac user, I refused to buy into the Windows version.

As you may imagine, I am extremely delighted that EB is finally going to release a DVD for the Mac after all these years...It is much more convenient to use just one DVD instead of swapping back and forth with two CD-ROMs. More audio and video on one DVD is another advantage of going DVD.

Technology is GOOD!

2-0 out of 5 stars A software dud
Britannica is the best encyclopedia in print. Why, oh why, can't they get the software right? Examples: The video clips are stock footage of no instructional purpose, some are simply of animals grazing (dumb!), the audio clips are few and far between, as are the video clips. This is multimedia circa 1985! Not 2002! The clipboard function explanation was confusing. The navigator was slow and only touched upon articles directly related to the topic. What happened to a macropedia?
I was disappointed by this. Maybe they will get it right in a few years. As it is, it is a very unimpressive cd-rom and will put you to sleep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Keeps Getting Better
Clearly the top encyclopedia on the market. Unmatched content, nice media. Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Defective software
The "convenient" install went OK. After it was installed, I immediately registered the product on-line and downloaded the latest update (both content and an apparent bug-patch).

Nevertheless, this piece of software seems to have a memory leak, and typically uses 320 Megabytes of system memory EVEN AFTER I QUIT THE APPLICATION. This requires me to re-boot my computer to regain usage of HALF OF MY SYSTEM MEMORY. This is inconvenient, and utterly ridiculous for modern software.

Unless you enjoy re-booting your computer everytime you use the Britannica, I advise you to NOT buy this software. This saddens me, because I like the textual content. The multi-media element,
however, leaves much to be desired.
