4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Product
My brother had this CD sitting around so I popped it into the computer to see what I could learn. It had a very nice layout with a video bow with a native speaker you could listen to speak everything from the English to the Spanish. The grammar was laid out very easily and basic, and after each lesson they would have real life conversations for you to participate it. The Vocabulary Master is an excellent way to memorize vocabulary quickly.

Within several days I was able to communicate in basic sentences and had memorized over 80 vocab words. Learning a language is not easy work, so don't expect to get by with doing nothing, but this I think is definitly the most effective way to learn it well.

One thing I would reccomend is having a grammar guide book with you for memorizing grammar rules more effectly. But this is certainly a good product and I would reccomend it to anyone who is serious about learning a language. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review From an English Teacher (ESL)
English can be a very complicated language to learn and teach. I teach ESL (English as a Second Language) and I have used this program in the classroom to compliment my actual lessons and the results have been surprisingly fantastic. My students loved using this program because it gave them good reinforcement on what they had learned in the classroom and even expanded their learning. One of the best things English Now was able to do was to help students work on their pronunciations of words through a microphone which the computer/software then compared it to a native English speaker's pronunciation. The students were also very fond of the many games and activities available and they too also helped. The effectiveness, capabilities and features of this program make it a great buy for anyone looking to learn ESL.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Works
Hello, I am a businessman from Japan who learned English from this product. English Now made me able to master the important language skills of listening, speaking, reading & writing, and vocabulary & grammar. There are many features that teach each of these skills but some of them are being able to hear the words said by a native speaker, conversation practice, literature to read in English, and many practice games. I really enjoyed the practice games and they were great review. With this I was able to learn a great deal of English in a short period of time. This program really works so don't be afraid to buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn English
This software program helped me to learn English. It is very good. The learning and practice I got from this program made me learn much faster. It was easy to use and is very complete. For any reason, if you want to learn English, use this produt it will help.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can write this review because of English Now
Hi I am a native of Spain and decided to learn English before coming to the United States. At first I started taking a class but found that very hard so I looked for help and found English Now. This product helped me learn some very crucial parts of the English Language and worked great with the class. I was able to expand my vocabulary and pronounce words in the correct way. I found the movies to be very helpful because you could follow the conversation with the situation and gain a better understanding of what was going on. I was able to put what I learned in class into practice with English Now. I was able to learn a lot with this product and I think everyone should try it if their goal is to learn another language. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars No, No, No, and No
I thought at first the first CD was good for beginners, It tought you basic words and they are easy to remeber. If you understand little of portuguese this would be good to refresh on but if you know portuguese I would say go with something else. It doesnt even teach you how to put sentences together like "And, But, The," or any other words.

2-0 out of 5 stars Can someone learn Portuguese with these programs?
My answer is NO. I bought this 2 CD Set several weeks ago and each CD lasted me about 2 days. The first CD teaches you basic vocabulary. It has some games, but they are pretty lame and I got tired of it after a few games.

Second one is a lot more advanced and focused on listening. If you know Spanish, or other romance language, the games will be too easy. In my case, I got most of questions right at first try, learning some new expressions and words. If you don't know romance languages...it will be too hard, since there is no explanation of grammar, what so ever.

2-0 out of 5 stars poor
For a few days after I bought this CD, I could have fun because I had no knowledge on Portuguese. You can memorize little amount of basic words for sure. But as I progress, I realized that This 2 CD-ROM set lacked the most significant thing in learning a new language. It does not provide any grammar nor greeting frase such as "How are you?" and "I'm fine"

Compared to the 1st CD, the 2nd CD was way too hard. There are so many words that had not been mentioned in the 1st CD. You'll never understand the 2nd CD even when you perfectly mastered the 1st CD. I'm studying Portuguese using other software and books. It has been a month, but I still can't understand the 2nd CD.

2-0 out of 5 stars Time to fall asleep!
With this CD the only thing that you will learn is basic vocabulary. The games that it has are so boring that you feel like going to sleep right away...
They are slow, repetitive and show a total lack of creativity. The voices are also pretty monotone.
By the way, the accent is from Portugal, so if you need to learn Brazilian Portuguese, this is not the right tool.
Don't say I didn't warn you!!! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile supplement to Hindi study, but seriously flawed
Talk Now Hindi suffers from the flaw which affects most language software. The manufacturer uses an identical engine for all of their languages, so there is nothing in the program which would be unique to the Hindi language, and nothing culturally Indian. This also creates the amusing situation of having animated Europeans testing your Hindi (the blonde woman may be cute, but not the type of person you are likely to meet in an Indian bazaar!)

There are several good features of the program:

-Words and phrases are spoken by a male and a femal voice.
-You can choose from dozens of languages for the help language.
-Some of the games are actually quite fun (such as creating the Frankenstein monster while learning the parts of the body).

But the problems with the program are many:
-Sound is a bit muddy
-You can complete everything in about three hours of work.
-Symbols, pictures, hosts, etc. are all European.
-Because the software engine is generic, you learn a lot of words you would never use in India, or words for which Hindi speakers use the English word. For example, you learn that the Hindi word for "tie" is "tie" and "jacket" is "jacket". Even worse, "Mug" is "mug" and "bread" is "bread" even though there are commonly used Hindi equivalents for these: "pyala" and "roti" respectively.
-Some of the words are wrong or very rare usages. For example, the word given for grey is "bhura", which actually means brown. My guess is that whoever they got to give the Hindi words for things either speaks an odd dialect, or is not a native speaker at all.
-Many words are spelled wrong in the Hindi script. For example, Israel is pronounced "Israel" by the speaker, but spelled "Istrael" for some reason.

This program might be useful for you if you are a beginner at Hindi, and want something amusing to supplement your textbook study. But don't expect to learn all that much.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy this Product!
I bought this CD ROM because my boyfriend speaks hindi, and I wanted to learn to converse with him in his native language. I studied and practiced only to have him look at me and say "What?". The words are not accurate, they only provide the hindi spelling, not the english spelling, so learning the words and their pronunciation is VERY difficult. He laughed out loud when he checked it out. Don't waste your time and money!

5-0 out of 5 stars Talk Now! Hindi is my favorite
I absolutely love this program. They have a female and male speaker, just click on one or the other. It's very uncomplicated interface, easy to use. I think it's clear to understand the speakers. And most of all the games are fun to play. I've got Rosetta Stone which I like a lot, but think is harder and isn't as much fun; Transparent Languages of the World - I don't like the pronounciation but I like the conversational style; Vidyarambham Hey, you wanna learn Hindi which is also very fun excellent for kids, plus really good for writing practice also. Pimsleur is one I haven't tried - too expensive for me, but supposed to be a very good way to learn. Books and audio tapes are boring for me. Talk Now! Hindi is definitely my favorite - good for all ages. I can't wait to finish this and try their advanced World Talk Hindi!

4-0 out of 5 stars good, but i wish they spoke more clearly
I think that it is a good tool, but I wouldn't solely rely on it. The speakers are not completely understandable...i need my boyfriend to correct me when i hear it wrong...I wish they would have a translation of what the person is saying in englsh so i could read it as i say it, but they just have the hindi writing (which i don't understand at all)...it is fun to use and i've learned a bit while just using it for a few days...in the sections of 'phrases' the speakers talk too fast and i have to play it many times to say the sentence once...:-/ so i'm just sticking to the one word sections :-P...i'm just happy to have any software to practice hindi with...:-P...n i'm even learning some stuff my b/f doesn't know...hehe ... Amazon.com Review

Ideal for students, this CD-ROM version of Merriam-Webster's perenniallypopular dictionary and thesaurus hits the mark with a fast and friendlyinterface and a comprehensive database that includes more than 500,000entries.

As in previous editions of the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, the content here moves well beyond simple words and etymologiesto include famous political and cultural figures from world history, placenames, classical allusions, and some of the latest scientific terminology (amust for any college student). Browsing through, we even found numerous entriesfrom areas as diverse as theoretical physics and literary theory--there's trulysomething for everyone here. But, if users crave more information, they can linkto the Web for many entries and hear a real speaker pronounce more than 100,000entries--particularly useful for difficult words and words with non-Englishorigins.

Installation of this CD was truly effortless, and we found the program'sinterface to be instantly useful; search and navigation capabilities are a realstrength. In addition, users can search for clues to crossword puzzles (byinputting words with missing letters) and anagrams--and even more esotericoptions, such as cryptograms (where letters are substituted with others byshifting positions along the alphabet). Better yet, users can move betweenthesaurus and dictionary effortlessly.

Generations of students have relied on Merriam-Webster to inform their writingand reading through college, and this revised electronic edition is sure tocontinue the tradition through the digital age. --Rich Dragan ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Necessary Tool
Since I updated from Word 95 to 98 in October, 2000, I have had a great deal of difficulty accessing a usable list from the built-in Thesaurus; plus I discovered that the dictionary is not nearly as complete and easy to use as in the previous version of Word.

I am a writer, and though I own twenty or so dictionaries in hard back, I required a tool that was easier to carry with me on the road than my back breaking load of books. I needed access to the many varieties of words and their second or third meaning, as well as other words with similar meanings. Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary & Thesaurus program link directly into Word; so, with the click of the button I have a thorough and user-friendly link to my Word World.

I also am an Editor. It is imperative that I know what the meaning is of a word that one of my client uses, so if it is unfamiliar or not obvious, I now have the means to quickly review alternative definitions and edit a work with the writer's choice in mind.

This is an excellent program from a renown source. The only aspect that bothers me is that when I click on a word in my document, the program inserts it again and adds a paragraph break; this means that once I check it I then have to make the correction manually by both retyping the misspelled word and deleting the second entry and line break.

This caused me to give it a 4 star rather than 5 rating.

4-0 out of 5 stars sufficient for most people
I've been using this for sometime, and until now, I've found all the words I was looking for. I used to have Encarta dictionary and I feel that both Encarta and Merriam-Websters are equally good - both have a thesaurus and both have audio of the pronounciations. Some words have examples of proper usage in a sentence - but I would have been more satisfied if all the words had it. Not a big problem for me since I tend to look up words as soon as I see them in an article (is'nt that one of the main reasons that you get a CDROM version of the dictionary - so that you dont slack off?!). Definitely much more bang for the buck than Encarta dictionary(>$... for the deluxe pack that includes the dictionary).

2-0 out of 5 stars Regretted buying
Dificient contents as a paid computer based material. I was expecting this MWCD would be more full coverage dictionary rather than a thinny handdy reference. Lacking examples and ediums, it only offers short definitions of words which is not eye-catchingly displayed though by the way. Relatively easy install and access, yes I agree on that. But it did bump with my Windows ME and word 2000 several times and I needed to boot-up again once in a while. Slow pop up was another pain. You may want the definition boxs to come up in 2 seconds when you have COMPUTER DICTIONARY INSTALLED, not ten seconds chewing your finger and listening your hard drive deadly spinning. I also felt crooked that there are many free on-line dictionaries with comparable quality(actually I feel them better) including pronounceation. One virtue of this MWCD is it plays on and with word processing software. With a few mouse clickings, you can consult and find right on working paper.

5-0 out of 5 stars High quality and easy to use
The Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary & Thesaurus computer program (on CD) is an excellent value. This program is very useful for anyone who types a lot on his/her computer or is a writer. This software is very easy to use. Once you install the dictionary you can get started right away with searching for words. The interface is intuitive and simple, and there are a huge number of words to search from.

There are also many valuable options that come with this program. You can look up homophones and synonyms. If you have a jumbled word like "DOIMSW" you can quickly use the option for "Jumble" option and find out that the word is "WISDOM" (or if you have letters like "RETINAS" you'll find numerous words). You can search for words that rhyme with each other. You can even search for words from specific dates (like 1777). If you don't know the exact spelling of the word there's a few neat options that you can learn to find words (involving special characters like *,&,^,!).

This dictionary also is very convenient because you don't need the CD to run the dictionary. You can just install it and then quickly use the program anytime. If you want to hear pronunciations, however, you need to use the CD unless you install all the sound. The pronunciation guide is very useful and the sound is realistic.

The dictionary provides both entertainment and education for me. I find myself just playing around with the program, typing in random letters to see if there's a jumble, looking up synonyms, listening to the pronunciations for vulgar words, and just browsing the vast number of entries. I'm confident that buying this dictionary is a wise investment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Merriam-Webster's Collegiate & Thesaurus
An excellent doctoral professor recommended Merriam-Webster because it's the standard for APA and other professional associations. Most importantly, Merriam-Webster provides linguistically correct definitions as opposed to politically correct definitions like some of the other more conservative dictionaries. ... Read more

Need to bone up for your college entrance exams? Look to Kaplan, one ofthe nation's test-prep leaders; its two-CD-ROM package is chock-full ofdiagnostic tests and lessons to help you ace all the necessary exams, plus moregeneral advice on planning for college admission.

Choose from various types of helpful information to begin your preparation:assessment tests, lessons on each type of test question, flash cards and quizgames, and an admissions calendar that helps you plan your entire applicationprocess. It's the tests and lessons, though, that are the heart of the program. The lessons are broken into bitesized topics and include a lot of spokennarration that can't be interrupted midstream by a click; this can be somewhattime-consuming if you want to preview or browse lessons before deciding whetheryou need them. Each lesson offers one or two sample questions to illustrate itspoint.

Though easily installed, the instruction book doesn't tell you much about how tomaneuver through the program, so you must wade through the introductory tour andsome cheesy graphics to figure out the application's functions. A quick warning:set the volume on your control panel before running the program, because itisn't adjustable from the menu bar.

These CD-ROMs offer a thorough review of all the different types of questionsthat are asked on the ACT, SAT, and PSAT. Whether you simply want to familiarizeyourself with the format of the test you'll be taking, or wish to brush up onmath skills or vocabulary, Kaplan's college test-prep programs offer plenty ofinformed practice. --Matt Kohut ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Useful!!!!
I bought this product out of general intrest and it is great. I would say this is extremely useful for travel and just in general if you want to learn some languages. It offers 31 languages, some common ones like English & Spanish and some more obscure ones like Zulu & Thai. I really could not get enough of this product because I found it to be very fun to use and also very intriguing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Good
I found 31 Languages of the World to be a very good and useful product. I travel all over the world very often for business and find it quite useful to be able to speak at least some of the native language of the place I am traveling to. With this product I am able to learn a variety of languages through interactive games and activites. I found this to be very useful for pronunciation and learning situation based conversations (like how to buy a plane ticket or asking for directions). Anyone looking to learn multiple languages should start here. This is a versatile and good product for language learning in general.

4-0 out of 5 stars I was pleasantly surprised.
I hadn't found much info on this program online, so I was a little scared to use it. I got it to help teach me Korean. I wasn't able to find a reasonably priced & well rated dedicated language package for that. I found this one, but I kept thinking "A $...piece of software for 31 languages, it's going to have almost nothing for the one language out of those I want."

I was happy with the purchase (mainly because I plan to use the French portion too). The Korean section is a little light in the tooth, but it is sufficient to help learn pronounciation and some vocab and phrases. My girlfirend is Korean and she tells me it is accurate.

This program won't teach you the language, it's more of a phrasebook taken to the next level w/ feedback. You'll probably need a good college text book if you are serious about learning, but it is a good supplemental aide. I'm not sure [someone] was talking about there being no instructions, it's really straight forward enough you shouldn't need more instructions than it gives.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not quite what it seems
I was very disappointed with the 31 languages of the world software. There were no directions provided except for little tips when you open the program, making it extremely hard to follow. I have been a spanish student for about 3 years now, and I couldn't even figure out the answers to the games for the Spanish section. The answers were not related and were either too simplistic (such as the way to say "the") or too confusing to even guess. As for the learning sections, all they are are paragraphs written in the foriegn language and translated on the bottom. You can click on each word to see individually what they mean, but it is extremely hard to grasp the language in ways you would learn in the classroom (like the different verb tenses, set vocabulary lists, etc). I felt the program had no format and did not help me at all. I would not recommend buying this software. If you are serious about learning a language, I would try one of the more expenseive, single-language software programs instead, or sign up for classes somewhere. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun practice but you can't really learn
I hesitated to buy this series because version 7 had such BAD reviews. They must have improved with version 8. This is great practice. Using the speaker, you get constant feedback at how well you are pronouncing the words. You can see it in various ways - your tone, accent, pitch, etc. But I must mention that this isn't for the absolute beginner. You don't actually learn proper sentence structure, etc. YOu MUST first take a class or learn through the various language tapes. I had taken a semester of Italian in college and prior to that briefly skimmed the Living Language Audio cassettes. The software is simply a tool to PRACTICE what you've learned.

There are a variety of lessons: 1) a video dialogue; 2)Conversation phrases; 3) Fundamental Italian; & 4) Survival Phrases. But they really lack in organization. Don't bother going to their HELP menu. It's generic. It isn't unique to the language you choose. It's the standard throughout the entire series. I know there is a grammer help somewhere. But again, because it isn't at all organized, I can't find it again. Don't bother with the button "Getting Started." IT doesn't lead you to a nice step-by-step guide.

But I still recommend it for those who've at least learned the language elsewhere. I tried the French one- which just proves my point. My knowledge of French is less then what I know of Italian. I was lost, because I really didn't know it. But at least I can HEAR if I can pronounce the words.

1-0 out of 5 stars Words from Italy
Hello,

I have been speaking Italian for several years and I have lived the past two years in Rome and Milano and I RECOMMEND ANYONE WANTING TO LEARN ITALIAN TO STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROGRAM....

I bought this program in the states to teach my girlfriend....what a waste of money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I want to re-emphasize what others have said in that this doesnt cover any material that teaches you how to speak italian!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was shocked at this program, as it doesnt even introduce (or contain) the conjugations for the verbs essere and avere....as almost every other piece of instructional material on italian covers right in the beginning as its vital for italian.........and it doesnt end there as the help file contains many errors in the verb conjugations....How can this be!!!!!!!!!!!!

The video which for those that have no other way to hear italian might be good....well, NO! First off, the way these people speak is almost funny...as they talk very exaggerated and I dread to think of people trying to copy this accent to speak italian as you would seem like a joke in italy....not to mention that this video is quite old (they dont even pay with euro etc...) and it doesnt cover anything of the material it presents....

I laughed when I saw someone write a review with boun lavoro (Italians dont say this BTW).....and it shows me even more how this product can only teach people improper italian!!!!!!!!

And really I tried to teach my new girlfriend italian from this, and I just couldnt find anyway to begin here for her...even the fundamental parts present very little information....its all just thrown together....

I checked the fundamental section and the seventh word mountain (montagna) is present with a example phrase

le montagne sono coperte di neve
(which is translated properly to)
the mountains are covered with snow...

here already it presents the passive voice of coprire,

The verb "coprire"in this case is passive and female

Io sono coperta
Tu sei coperta
Egli รจ coperta
Noi siamo coperte
Voi siete coperte
LORO SONO COPERTE

check the software for why the passive voice is here in this manner anywhere in this program and you will be left out to dry, yet they quiz you on this later in the exercises like the crosswords

le montange sono ******** di neve

god this is just terrible to think that peole are memorizing the word coperte (covered) here already in the beginning without the knowledge of how or why it is...and they will never learn from this program either as its not in here!!!!!!!

This software as a way to learn its somewhat criminal to me!!!!!!!!

THIS IS MORE THAN CRAP....I CANT SEE HOW ANYWAY CAN LEARN PROPER ITALIAN WITH THIS.....

DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Italian now and later
My 50 year old husband decided he wanted to try and learn to speak some Italian. I bought Italian now for Christmas and he's really enjoying it. However, I was shocked to find my three sons, ages, 11, 10 & 8 also love it. It's turned into a family fun time trying to see who can enunciate the words better on the meter scale.

2-0 out of 5 stars ACK!! Wait that's German!
This computer program looks as though some random guy just through a whole bunch of italian words on the software, got a woman's voice on there, added... fonts/sounds, and through in a box with a cover i am sure cost more than the program! Getting a book would be better, but I have to give some credit for the few vocab. words I have learned, otherwise, this program is put into two words!...

1-0 out of 5 stars still non capisco l'italiano...
....The software itself has not seen much action because everytime I try to use it, I get terribly bored. It is not too encompassing for a beginner. Perhaps with some knowledge of Italian the program would be of more use (?). The phrases that you begin with are not really relevant nor are they interesting and I find that I am still looking for that "right" software that will hold my hand through the basics. ... Amazon.com Review

This software decodes the mysteries of the SAT and ACT exams, offering insider tips and a range of learning strategies that will ensure student success. With customized study planning, diagnostic tools, and sample exams for students' use, Inside the SAT & ACT 2003 Deluxe from the Princeton Review guarantees higher scores on either test.

The package serves both as an exam-taking coach and a tutor--two separate but equally necessary tasks. A general strategies section outlines the principles behind the construction of the exam, aspects of the SAT that have nothing to do with core learning. The strategies show students how to eliminate obviously wrong answers on the multiple choice test, explaining the exam designers' philosophy so that those facing the SAT know how best to allocate their time and intellectual resources.

Once the tricks of the trade are well understood, though, the program guides a user through all of the material one might expect to see on the exam, reviewing the math and verbal skills needed to bring home a winning grade. The tutorials are detailed and well organized, offering an excellent supplement to high school instruction.

Inside the SAT & ACT also offers a section on college admissions, allowing users to search over 1,600 colleges based on criteria including the price of tuition, the gender or ethic make-up of an institution's student body, or basic admission requirements. This allows students to target preferred schools and determine what kind of SAT scores will be needed to ensure their admission.

Not surprisingly, Inside the SAT & ACT leans heavily toward delivering content, placing little emphasis on extras like a sleek interface or stylish graphics. This no-nonsense format gets the job done, even if some users may find themselves hating the sounds that accompany the educational drills--a harsh clang denotes a right answer for many exercises--by the end of their 12-week program of study. The occasionally irritating aspects of the package, though, are a small price to pay for the additional exam preparation this software provides. Parents and college-bound students alike are sure to be pleased with the results that this package can deliver. --Alyx Dellamonica ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great software
I think that this is a great software. I found the information very useful for both the SAT and ACT. The SAT tips are very useful. However, I didn't agreed with several tips on the ACT prep software.

I was not comfortable taking the practice tests on the computer. On reading passages, it is timed but you need to scroll down. This takes some times. Also, the practice tests are somewhat too easy.

I would recommend you use the book "Getting into the ACT" and/or "Ten real SATs" in addition to this. In these two books, retired tests are used.

The software itself is great for learning the content and strategies for the tests, but the practice tests are not as good as the books I mentioned.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information...lousy delivery!
The information in this product could really help a bunch of kids...unfortunately my 14 year old tuned out as soon as the presenters started talking like a motivational speaker. You know the type...always smiling, really upbeat, almost mesmerized, "Mary Kay salesperson" form of speaking?

Additionally, the typical, lazy, loser guy who always takes the easy route is a scathing stereotype and in my opinion leaves everything to be desired.

If you want the kids to listen, find the happy medium between the plastic smile and the monotone drone. Run your program on some real kids and see which styles they respond to best. Also take a look at your target audience and what their habits and likes are. You may find stereotyping the loser "skater dude", as your sample idiot may not hold your viewers attention very well. ... Read more
