4-0 out of 5 stars You're On Your Own
The power and capabilities of this industry standard audio production application are awesome. Its versatility and potential for a multitude of recording and compositional projects is exciting and inspiring. And its notorious reputation for a steep learning curve ..... well earned.

What used to exist in four versions (Logic Audio, Silver, Gold & Platinum in ascending order) has been simplified to two; Logic Pro and Logic Express. And that's the only thing simple about it. I'm not sure of the Pro version (out of my affordability range at the moment), but this package has the feel of being somewhat rushed to market; there are no tutorials to speak of included on any of the five discs in the box, nor will you find any "guided tour" on any of the printed materials. On the documentation disc is a 496-page PDF you can print out, and at the time of this writing, that is the only publication you will find anywhere that specifically covers Logic Express ..... and it is a reference guide. Not exactly accommodating of Apple/Emagic to just toss purchasers of their software into the deep end like this and just let them flounder. On the other hand, releasing it this way may give the more determined of us that much more of a competitive edge .....

Missing guidance aside, I do not regret this purchase. With a little help from the Apple Pro Training title on Logic 6 (available separately), I've managed to figure out enough of the basics to know how to approach projects. It includes three virtual software tools ("analog" synth, sampler, rhythm machine), ten or so effects plug-ins, as many midi and sample editing options as you'll probably need, a scoring module you can actually print out sheet music from, and if you already have another music creation app like Reason or Garageband, you'll be pretty much set up with your own desktop recording studio. The main caveat I must pass along with this package is, you may save money, but you have your work cut out for you. Good luck. ... Read more

And get access to your photo albums directly from iMovie and iDVD, and bring in music for your slideshows from iTunes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Collection
This is a collection of iTunes 3, iPhoto 2, iMovie 3, and iDVD 3 that Apple offers on all their latest machines with Superdrive installed. All but iDVD 3 are available as downloads from the Apple website, but it is worth the $...or whatever to get them altogether and include the iDVD 3. The iDVD 3 is not available as a download because of its size (>1.3 gig) Each of the four programs is good, but the seamless combination of the four (five including iPod) makes this system an easy to learn combination. After looking for almost a year and a half at different software/hardware combinations for editing and converting (to digital for DVD), I decided on the Mac and the iLife package. There are certainly more powerful individual programs available on both the PC and Mac platforms, but this combination beats everything else that I looked at for ease of use and simplicity in learning. I am very pleased with my decision.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth four times the price
Where to start to talk about how amazing the latest offering is from Apple for the Macintosh? Let's take it one step at a time.

iMovie 3: Apple took their already great DV editing program and added so many new features it's almost mind boggling! Drag and drop from your iPhoto photo library. Drag and drop from your iTunes music library. Granted, you were able to do these things before in a somewhat clumsy way through the "import" command, but this makes it beyond easy. Chapter support (The ability to break up longer videos on DVD's to easily skip back and forth) for iDVD. Individual volume control for each audio track at any point in the track. One click access for all three of the other iApps. New titles, new transitions, the "Ken Burns" effect with stills. No other DV software available for ANY platform is as easy to use as this. Also if you download from Apple it's FREE!

iPhoto: Still mostly looks the same, but there is now support for the other digital lifestyle iApps built in. The "Retouch" editing feature works amazing well. Also if you download it from Apple it's FREE! If your into serious photo editing, you'll still want a companion program. Photoshop Elements is a good choice. 70% of Photoshop at 1/5 of the price.

iTunes: I honestly don't see much difference here. I'm sure changes were made to integrate it with the other iApps. Still a great program though. If you download it from Apple (deja vu) it's FREE!

iDVD: Some new themes, some new features make this a worthy addition to any SuperDrive equipped Mac. No other DVD authoring software I've seen is as easy to use and as intuitive as iDVD. AND if you download it from Apple it's....um....not available. iDVD can only be purchased as part of the iLife package AND then only installed if you have a Superdrive equipped (internal drive only and as far as I know ONLY if installed by Apple) G4 PowerMac.

Complaints: Yeah a few. iMovie crashed a few times while performing multiple operations (granted it was doing 4 "Ken Burns" and 5 transitions at the time) on my 933 SuperDrive G4 Quicksilver Tower. Also the Apple restricts iDVD to only those people who bought their SuperDrive equipped G4 computers. C'mon Apple! We bought the hardware. Let us configure it ourselves without penalties! Also, you must be running at least 10.1.5 or later (10.2 HIGHLY recommended). System 9 users are officially out in the cold for this product.

In conclusion: If you meet the hardware/software specs, this is a must buy! No SuperDrive? Find a fast online connection and download the other pieces.

5-0 out of 5 stars iLife puts it all together!
If you're on a Mac, you've probably used at least one of these programs by now. If not, you're missing out on what Steve Jobs calls "The hub of your digital lifestyle."

iMovie - For the amatuer film maker, or somebody who just wants to edit their own home movies, this is a cakewalk. Once you connect your camera through a Firewire port, you import your video. Add titles. Add fades, transitions, etc... Add some background music. Then, download it back to your camera (or, with a bridge, to a VCR). Better yet, save it out and import the video to iDVD for burning.

iDVD - I can't begin to tell you how easy this is. Create a menu (or select one of the many theme menus). Import your video. Click burn to DVD. It is literally that easy. I made a DVD of our improv troupe for all the members' Christmas gifts.

iTunes - If it's a music file... mp3, aiff, wav... it can import to iTunes. Create a music CD. Burn it as a standard or mp3 CD with a single click.

iPhoto - You can set this up to open and import the images as soon as your camera mounts to the desktop. Organize the images. Edit them for color or size. Then, burn a CD, make a slideshow, or even order a personalized bound book with your images and text.

The one major flaw of these programs has been the lack of manuals (except through third parties). A small price to pay for this kind of quality. Also, if you have no need for iDVD, the other three are available for download from the Apple web site. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware
Calkwalk has a no return policy and their box is very misleading. The pyro version included is crippleware and no where does it say so. You will not be able to rip a CD directly to MP3 but will have to rip to wave, load in plasma, convert there.

I do not recommend this program and cakewalk does not play by the normal rules.

1-0 out of 5 stars Crashes constantly
This is a huge step back for Apple's iApps, particularly iPhoto, which is an absolute disaster in this release. We typically cannot launch iPhoto without crashing unless we trash three catalog files. Importing more than once a day is impossible - the app says it cannot access .../iPhoto Library/month/date the second time you try to import.

Add to that the continued game of keep-away with iDVD, which will not work with external DVD burners. If you bought anything less than the highest-end Macs, or models like the Cube or iBook that have never had built-in DVD burners as an option, well, too darn bad! Kind of obviates the coolness of FireWire when peripherals are deliberately not supported by Apple.

Crashing and losing user data is NEVER acceptable. Apple, more than anyone, is supposed to know this. The company should be absolutely ashamed of this pathetic product, and should not offer it for sale until they work out the bugs and stop being such jerks about DVD burning.

2-0 out of 5 stars great product but lousy license
The the 10.3 Family Pack and the iLife Family Pack license have exactly the same language -

"as long as those computers are located in the same household and used by persons who occupy that same household".

For those who respect intellectual property and read their licenses carefully, this means that the 10.3 Family Pack cannot be installed on a Powerbook which then is taken outside the same household nor on another Mac located at another of your personal residences. Apple has confirmed that this is the correct interpretation of their license language.

All Apple had to do with both Family Pack licenses is change "located in the same household and used by" to"located in the same household OR used by".

Unfortunately the lawyers cannot seem to agree with that simple change so don't waste your money on the Family Pack unless you can comply with the license or choose to ignore it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works WAY better than Roxio
I was sick of the multiple "coasters" (unusable disks) created by Roxio Easy CD Creator 5. I needed some reliable software that would also allow me to do some basic audio editing (add fades, adjust volume, and make simple cuts to audio tracks). I did several searches online for software comparisons and came up with very little helpful information.

Finally I just went to the store & picked up something that looked good: Cakewalk Pyro 2003. And I have to say, I'm impressed! Aside from a bit of a learning curve for the uninitiated (in order to burn an audio CD to play in regular stereos, you must first put your tracks in wav format, a fact that isn't readily obvious to those used to Roxio's setup), this software works, and it works well. So far I've burned about 7 CDs, audio and data, with no flaws and a much easier time setting up the disc to burn than with Roxio. (You don't have to babysit the burning process - since you rip the tracks first, then tell the software what to burn, you don't have to sit there and switch CDs for an hour.) The CD quality produced is flawless, though I've basically been mixing my current CD collection onto other CDs, so I can't speak for those attempting to put their LP collection on CD.

I'd highly recommend this software for those who want to expand the capabilities of the CD burning software that came with their computers. This software works well, is fairly easy to learn, and produces great quality discs. The price is reasonable, and you definitely get your money's worth.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid and reliable burning software
Cakewalk Pyro is the other half of my home recording duo, the other half being Cakewalk SONAR. Having spent a good year with Roxio's CD Creator, I decided to give Pyro a try since I was using Cakewalk's multitrack recording software already.

Users of Roxio will find the controls on Pyro to be more straightforward, the interface more intuitive, and the reliability much higher. As other reviewers have said, not one CD burned with Pyro failed to burn properly. And the real-time track layout is a definite plus for this program.

Features are fairly simple with no real ability to edit waveforms other than cropping and fading, both of which occur at increasingly large intervals depending on the length of the file being edited. One way past this is to take a given file, break it up into smaller pieces and then reassemble them in the track layout. Re-integration of this kind is flawless and is a creative way around the few limitations the program has.

Cakewalk has been around for a long time and continues to improve the quality of its music software. With any luck, some of the features we editors had hoped for will be available in a future updated version of Pyro. All things considered, thought this may not be the most feature-packed burning program, it is by far the most reliable and user-friendly. Pick it up if you've been looking for a better burning program than what comes with Windows XP (which, by the way, the program works flawlessly on.

2-0 out of 5 stars Confusing Interface
All the reviews indicated that this software was easy to use. I found the opposite. Maybe I'll get used to Pyro but I doubt it.
I should have bought something else.

4-0 out of 5 stars Burn 4ever
I won't lie to you it took me about an hour to get it.Im the typical male who wont read the instructions to anything. But even so I got it down in about an hour or so.Im use to the Roxio burner, and Pyro is day to night to that burner. But once I got eveything down it was smooth sailing from there. Of the recordings I have made I have had no problems at all. Pyro lets you fade, volume control etc. The only drawback is that it is a little slow burning compared to Roxio. Great for those new to burning also.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome. Just love it!
As a support person for over 200 PC's, I got sick and tired of the enduser's complaining about Roxio EZCD 5.
The only thing EZ about it was how "easy" it was to cause me
more grief.
Upgrading to EZCD "Platinum edition" fixed most of the enduser's complaints.
But the EZCD that came with the CDRW drives was supposed to "save us money". [Meaning that we bought a certain cdrw drive which provided a copy of EZCD, supposedly saving us the price of buying a cdrw software burner package.Instead we had to buy upgrades, meaning the Platinum edition, which isn't cheap].

Having seen the problems with EZ, I bought Pyro for my own use.
I have used Pyro 1 and now Pyro 2003.

The only thing I did not like about Pyro (which is an issue with the maker of pyro, Cakewalk) was their upgrade polcy.
A lot of companies will let you upgrade to the latest version, at a reduced price.
The price for previous owners was basically the retail price.
No decent pricebreaks for previous owners. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Apple did a good job streamlining this product
With the price jump from around [$$$] for Logic Platinum to around [$$$] for Logic Pro, it's worth while considering that Logic Plat didn't come with any of the soft synths that are built into it. You have to pay an average of between [$$$] for each extra instrument [along with the vocoder and space designer] so the [$$$] price jump isnt bad at all. I bought Logic 6 Platinum and the upgrade price to Pro is worth it and I am very glad that I did NOT buy the seperate instruments. If you already did, then the upgrade might not be as worth it. I can't find too much info on what else is new or improved with this version. Logic may have a learning curve, but once you learn it inside and out, it's probably the most powerful Audio/MIDI package available. If only audio is your primary concern and you want something simple, then ProTools should be considered. But if you want total control over everything, then Logic is the way to go. Id say Logic for composers and more complex music, and ProTools for bands looking to record. Logic is also compatible with TDM hardware systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a no brainer for those using Logic on the Mac
If you already have Logic 5 or 6 on your Mac, this is a super deal. You get all of the emagic plugins and soft synths--even Space Designer, which was about $400 street a little while ago. ... Read more
