1-0 out of 5 stars Crashes constantly
This is a huge step back for Apple's iApps, particularly iPhoto, which is an absolute disaster in this release. We typically cannot launch iPhoto without crashing unless we trash three catalog files. Importing more than once a day is impossible - the app says it cannot access .../iPhoto Library/month/date the second time you try to import.

Add to that the continued game of keep-away with iDVD, which will not work with external DVD burners. If you bought anything less than the highest-end Macs, or models like the Cube or iBook that have never had built-in DVD burners as an option, well, too darn bad! Kind of obviates the coolness of FireWire when peripherals are deliberately not supported by Apple.

Crashing and losing user data is NEVER acceptable. Apple, more than anyone, is supposed to know this. The company should be absolutely ashamed of this pathetic product, and should not offer it for sale until they work out the bugs and stop being such jerks about DVD burning.

2-0 out of 5 stars great product but lousy license
The the 10.3 Family Pack and the iLife Family Pack license have exactly the same language -

"as long as those computers are located in the same household and used by persons who occupy that same household".

For those who respect intellectual property and read their licenses carefully, this means that the 10.3 Family Pack cannot be installed on a Powerbook which then is taken outside the same household nor on another Mac located at another of your personal residences. Apple has confirmed that this is the correct interpretation of their license language.

All Apple had to do with both Family Pack licenses is change "located in the same household and used by" to"located in the same household OR used by".

Unfortunately the lawyers cannot seem to agree with that simple change so don't waste your money on the Family Pack unless you can comply with the license or choose to ignore it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must have upgrade
This DV editing software is one of the best in the industry. While if you one version 1.x or 2.x who really are missing out on this new version. If you do NOT run OS X you should think twice about buying this product. However OSX users should definatly buy it because it adds native support. Also if you do not own a G4 also don't consider it because it is truley optimized for the G4 and will not preform well on a G3. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars released too early
All great ideas, but way too many glitches in simple situations. THe new variable speed option is a wonderful concept... but a simple slow motion effect is difficult to achieve now. There are lots of things that do not make sense. I hope there is an upgrade soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Upgrade worth it
I received FCP4 before it was released, and I've just used it enough to feel that I can give a review of it. And I do like the new program. And it is worth the upgrade. But you might want to wait to upgrade until they release a fix for a few bugs. I can't think of a single program that when first released was bug free. Apple will fix the bugs, but they haven't yet.

What do I like about the program? The features are amazing! I was pleased with FCP3, but I thought there was a lot they could do to make it better. And they did, in FCP4. Editing is basically the same as in FCP3, but you have much more control over everything you do. This includes making a custom keyboard (You decide which keys preform which actions).
But... FCP4 alone hasn't changed a great deal since FCP3, and if it were just that program alone, I don't know if it would be worth it.

However, not only do you get FCP4... You get Compressor, LiveType, Soundtrack, Cinema Tools, and Peak Express 3.3

Compressor, I like this feature a lot. It allows you to control what you export. I mean if you want to make a DVD, and want it formatted for a DVD, you have control over that, more so than in any previous version of FCP. Not only that, but it takes any guess work out of the equation. It allows you to preview the setting you're about to export. Which is good, so you hopefully won't end up spending 3 hours exporting something only to find it wasn't what you wanted. There are bugs in Compressor, something with being connected to a network won't allow it to work. I had this problem, but I unplugged my ethernet cord, and it worked like it should. Apple will likely make a fix for this soon.

LiveType. One of the things I didn't like about FCP3 was you didn't really have a great title maker. But that's all changed with LiveType. Now you have the most control I've ever seen out of a title program. If you want one letter to do something different (I can't think of why), well, you can.

Soundtrack. How great is it that they include tons (And I'm not kidding about the tons part) of loops that are royalty free? Unlike other looping programs, the loops in Soundtrack actually sound good. Sure it isn't going to give everyone what they want, but I've already used it for a few effects in this project I'm working on

Cinema Tools. Well I can't review this really, I haven't worked with film before. But what I do like is that it's now included with FCP, where as before, it was it's own program (Which would cost you [a lot more money] alone).

Peak Express 3.3. It isn't the best audio editor I've used, but it's still good. I believe this program costs [money] if you buy it individually, but it comes with FCP4, which is a nice thing. I've used this only a little, it can't really do what I want it to do, but I use it as a backup audio editor.

So in conclusion, FCP4 is packed with features. It does take a lot of space (About 15GB for everything), so if you're low on space, you've been warned. And it requires a DVD drive. Most of you probably have one, but if you don't, you're not going to be able to use this. I was concerned about the ...price tag on the upgrade, and I didn't think it was going to be able to deliver. But it did, and I'm glad I now have this great program. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Collection
This is a collection of iTunes 3, iPhoto 2, iMovie 3, and iDVD 3 that Apple offers on all their latest machines with Superdrive installed. All but iDVD 3 are available as downloads from the Apple website, but it is worth the $...or whatever to get them altogether and include the iDVD 3. The iDVD 3 is not available as a download because of its size (>1.3 gig) Each of the four programs is good, but the seamless combination of the four (five including iPod) makes this system an easy to learn combination. After looking for almost a year and a half at different software/hardware combinations for editing and converting (to digital for DVD), I decided on the Mac and the iLife package. There are certainly more powerful individual programs available on both the PC and Mac platforms, but this combination beats everything else that I looked at for ease of use and simplicity in learning. I am very pleased with my decision.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth four times the price
Where to start to talk about how amazing the latest offering is from Apple for the Macintosh? Let's take it one step at a time.

iMovie 3: Apple took their already great DV editing program and added so many new features it's almost mind boggling! Drag and drop from your iPhoto photo library. Drag and drop from your iTunes music library. Granted, you were able to do these things before in a somewhat clumsy way through the "import" command, but this makes it beyond easy. Chapter support (The ability to break up longer videos on DVD's to easily skip back and forth) for iDVD. Individual volume control for each audio track at any point in the track. One click access for all three of the other iApps. New titles, new transitions, the "Ken Burns" effect with stills. No other DV software available for ANY platform is as easy to use as this. Also if you download from Apple it's FREE!

iPhoto: Still mostly looks the same, but there is now support for the other digital lifestyle iApps built in. The "Retouch" editing feature works amazing well. Also if you download it from Apple it's FREE! If your into serious photo editing, you'll still want a companion program. Photoshop Elements is a good choice. 70% of Photoshop at 1/5 of the price.

iTunes: I honestly don't see much difference here. I'm sure changes were made to integrate it with the other iApps. Still a great program though. If you download it from Apple (deja vu) it's FREE!

iDVD: Some new themes, some new features make this a worthy addition to any SuperDrive equipped Mac. No other DVD authoring software I've seen is as easy to use and as intuitive as iDVD. AND if you download it from Apple it's....um....not available. iDVD can only be purchased as part of the iLife package AND then only installed if you have a Superdrive equipped (internal drive only and as far as I know ONLY if installed by Apple) G4 PowerMac.

Complaints: Yeah a few. iMovie crashed a few times while performing multiple operations (granted it was doing 4 "Ken Burns" and 5 transitions at the time) on my 933 SuperDrive G4 Quicksilver Tower. Also the Apple restricts iDVD to only those people who bought their SuperDrive equipped G4 computers. C'mon Apple! We bought the hardware. Let us configure it ourselves without penalties! Also, you must be running at least 10.1.5 or later (10.2 HIGHLY recommended). System 9 users are officially out in the cold for this product.

In conclusion: If you meet the hardware/software specs, this is a must buy! No SuperDrive? Find a fast online connection and download the other pieces.

5-0 out of 5 stars iLife puts it all together!
If you're on a Mac, you've probably used at least one of these programs by now. If not, you're missing out on what Steve Jobs calls "The hub of your digital lifestyle."

iMovie - For the amatuer film maker, or somebody who just wants to edit their own home movies, this is a cakewalk. Once you connect your camera through a Firewire port, you import your video. Add titles. Add fades, transitions, etc... Add some background music. Then, download it back to your camera (or, with a bridge, to a VCR). Better yet, save it out and import the video to iDVD for burning.

iDVD - I can't begin to tell you how easy this is. Create a menu (or select one of the many theme menus). Import your video. Click burn to DVD. It is literally that easy. I made a DVD of our improv troupe for all the members' Christmas gifts.

iTunes - If it's a music file... mp3, aiff, wav... it can import to iTunes. Create a music CD. Burn it as a standard or mp3 CD with a single click.

iPhoto - You can set this up to open and import the images as soon as your camera mounts to the desktop. Organize the images. Edit them for color or size. Then, burn a CD, make a slideshow, or even order a personalized bound book with your images and text.

The one major flaw of these programs has been the lack of manuals (except through third parties). A small price to pay for this kind of quality. Also, if you have no need for iDVD, the other three are available for download from the Apple web site. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Apple did a good job streamlining this product
With the price jump from around [$$$] for Logic Platinum to around [$$$] for Logic Pro, it's worth while considering that Logic Plat didn't come with any of the soft synths that are built into it. You have to pay an average of between [$$$] for each extra instrument [along with the vocoder and space designer] so the [$$$] price jump isnt bad at all. I bought Logic 6 Platinum and the upgrade price to Pro is worth it and I am very glad that I did NOT buy the seperate instruments. If you already did, then the upgrade might not be as worth it. I can't find too much info on what else is new or improved with this version. Logic may have a learning curve, but once you learn it inside and out, it's probably the most powerful Audio/MIDI package available. If only audio is your primary concern and you want something simple, then ProTools should be considered. But if you want total control over everything, then Logic is the way to go. Id say Logic for composers and more complex music, and ProTools for bands looking to record. Logic is also compatible with TDM hardware systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a no brainer for those using Logic on the Mac
If you already have Logic 5 or 6 on your Mac, this is a super deal. You get all of the emagic plugins and soft synths--even Space Designer, which was about $400 street a little while ago. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Recent upgrade was well worth it.
I've been working with OS X for several months now. MY resistance to upgrading to Jaguar (OS X.2) was based primarily on the fact that I bought a new iMac last year and didn't want to shell out more money for the new OS. Finally, I gave in. And it was worth the time and effort.

Jaguar has a cleaner, faster interface to work in. Start-up is much faster. It's a more stable system than OS X (which is saying something, because OS X was already the most stable Mac OS).

The Mail client is also improved immensely over the previous version.

Jaguar includes iChat (instant messaging software), Mail, Address Book, and downloads are available for iSync (basically allows you to port your info from home to work and back seamlessly), iCal (scheduling software), and the new Safari web browser. (A warning though, at this writing Safari is still in Beta testing and definitely needs refining before going live.)

Put this together with the iLife software package (iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, and iDVD), and you've got yourself one great computer system.

As usual, Apple is letting third parties write their manuals. You'll have to buy those separately if you want them. However, this time they've included an interactive "Getting Started" CD which will get the novice up and running in Jaguar without too much stress.

5-0 out of 5 stars Expensive but worth every penny
Buy this upgrade!!

While not a true switcher (as I run a high end Win XP Pro PC(2.4 ghz dual Intel cpu 2 gig ram (Money) Pro-graphics card and the fantastic Sony GWM-FW900 24" wide screen monitor) for (Money) a seat 3d CAD/CAM software)

But to replace my ageing Dell 800 p-3 mostly used for games and fun with Linux) as a main home computer

I bought a top of the line iMac 800 G-4 super drive in March to see what all the fuss was about ref OS-X. as I am an old Unix geek thought it would make a nice BAD Unix toy if this Apple thing did not work out and it was so fine to look at as an industrial design engineer.

So if any one was entitled to be miffed with Apple at the full price on this 'point' upgrade it was I.

Well this is NO 'point' upgrade! this is like going from Wi 98sp2 to XP pro SP1 only much more so not only Was X 10.1.5 rock solid on the iMac G-4 this 10.2 is faster and better in every way in very subtle ways

If I could get my work software ported to OS-X I would have a dual G4-1.25 Ghz driving my Sony MFW-900 in a moment

I am a total convert to the fantastic beauty of this OS and I Have ordered Ashlar Velum Cobalt to see if it can replace my work PC software on a Mac

4-0 out of 5 stars Substantial improvement
This is a very stable, incredibly smooth OS. It launches at lightning speed, is very intuitive and the learning curve is very short. If there is a downside, compatible professional graphic software is in short supply. It is a huge improvement over Windows and previous Mac OS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazon reviews: Now featuring False Information!
Mac OS X does not disable built-in floppy drives. Mac OS X runs better on computers that are built for it. Running it on a Beige G3 is like running Windows on a 486; you can do it, but it doesn't mean you should. Crashes occour from poorly-designed APPLICATIONS, not OS X. I have had OS X for over a year, and I have had only 2 'kernel panics' (full system lockups). hbj200 is wrong about the 1%. it's more like 8% and growing rapidly, and everyone uses Windows because they believe Bill's propaganda. There is more documentation about digital cameras that networking in OS 10.2 because of Rendezvous (Stable, Efficient Networking for Dummies)

4-0 out of 5 stars Necessary accessory to your OS X Mac
If you run OS X on your Mac, .Mac is recommended to enhance the functionality of your machine. In order to use Apple's Backup and iSync utilities you need a subscription to .Mac. The .Mac mail service is not as user friendly or powerful as other services such as Yahoo mail, but the Apple Mail program makes it easy to get your .Mac mail. The value of the free games that you get throughout the year is negligible, but if Apple continues to add features and software available through .Mac it will be hard to make a case against subscribing.

4-0 out of 5 stars .Mac is Fantastic!
Apple's suite of online tools is an incredible way to extend your digital hub, and as Apple keeps adding features and services, the value keeps going up!

If you'd like to see examples of what others are doing with their .Mac accounts, check out [the website].

Check it out, then buy a .Mac subscription! You won't be disappointed!

1-0 out of 5 stars It Might Work for Newbies and the Ignorant
If you shop around you'll find that online storage is considerably cheaper than what Apple is selling it for. The utilities they include are not worth much to anyone that knows what they're doing. I'm very unimpressed.

5-0 out of 5 stars All-In-One Online Support
This software package gives you an account with .Mac for one year. What that really means is that you'll have an @apple.com email address, 100MB of storage space on Apple's servers and a few other services. Those services are:

Webmail - Access to your mail from any computer with internet access.

Homepage - An insanely easy to use program for posting your own webpages (only the people you give the address to can access them).

iDisk - Your personal hard disk on the internet. Perfect for sharing files and archiving.

Backup - A very easy to use program for backig up your important files to iDisk, CD & DVD

Anti-Virus - A continually updated (by Apple) program to keep your Mac virus free.

Support - Online support in the form of FAQ's, Discussin Boards, hlepful links, Tips and the AppleCare Knowledge Base.

This is the perfect solution for people (like me) who don't want to be bothered with finding multiple other companies to preform these same tasks. It's also good to know that someone's watching your back. Apple does this by continually updating the support pages and anti-virus software as well as offering many free programs and demos through iDisk. For me though, the best feature (besides email) is homepage. It allows me to eaisly keep family and friends up to date with my life. I post a quartly newsleter as well as photos from special occations. And speaking of email it's terrific. It's not the most feature laden account out there, but it's more than enough for the average user.

For keeping family up to date, an internet based hard drive with 100MB of space AND anti-virus protection as well as backup software you could hardly do better than a .mac account.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gunsmoke Review
While this product is not yet released, it is interesting to note that Apple is offering the same services/software (it's called .mac) for [price] to folks who already have an iTools account. If you do not have an exisitng iTools account, then the discount offered here is excellent (if you need the services). For me, the extra iDisk space makes this a worthwhile expense. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I was able to make a 2 killer songs in 3 hours! This program kicks major ass!

4-0 out of 5 stars SOUNDTRACK PUT TO REAL WORLD USE.
Soundtrack is a great fun program don't get me wrong and upon first buying it I would have given it five stars but once I began to use it in the real world I came to find out that the loops are too modern and can get cheesy after a while. Some loops are just too short and not much can be done with them. I use soundtrack to make an background scores on many different kinds of projects. on some i get lucky and find great loops. i think a new search is needed so that you can narrow down what you are looking for rather than searching through hundreds of loop which causes them all to sound the same after a while. i think thier should be a larger range in category for the loops and make each genre very distinct since most can fit under a contemporary grouping. Basically soundtrack is a great program with lots of potential but it is version 1 so I'm looking foward to seeing all the improvments in versions to come. i would recommend buying this program because it is really great at just makeing music for fun or for small video's and it is easy to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Easy to use
My wife, who is in film school, can not afford to pay anyone to write music for the films that she makes. That is why I bought Soundtrack. There are thousands of free loops and sounds to pick from. And if that is not enough you can import other sounds and loops from other web sites or music that I have recorded, i'm an even poorer musician. Now she makes the films and I score them, when she does not have time to.
The learning curve is small. I was using Soundtrack in no time. i'm now scoreing films for my friends and other fellow film students. You have to try to mess up. Just put the loop where you want it and Soundtrack will do the rest. Even change the key, or tempo so you don't have to.
This is just an amazing program. I would say this is prefect for anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
This is truly an amazing program. I first tried it in a Mac store, on a Powermac G4. I was attracted to it because of other ratings I had seen on it. Well, at first glance I could immediatly figure out how to use it. It's very clearly laid out. I created a 2 minute long song with drums, bass, synths, and asome tomba drums. It sounded great great, Soundtrack automatically syncs all your tracks. The songs are royalty free too! So you can pay back the bill for the program.
Bottom Line: Get it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best DVD Authoring App on Market!!!
I've been authoring DVDs for years. I started off using Sonic Solutions authoring suite. We paid almost $... for this system in 1997. And SOnic only runs in OS9. Now you can have all that functionality for only $... with DVD Studio Pro. DVD Studio Pro 1.5 offers welcome improvements such as OS X compatibility, more-reliable previews, higher MPEG-2 compression quality, and tighter integration with Final Cut Pro 3, and the program remains the only viable choice for professional DVD authoring on the Mac. But Apple needs to deliver another version that improves usability, the bit-budgeting process, and documentation, so that new users can get up-to-speed faster and experienced users can work more efficiently. If you are serious about making DVDs, I suggest you have a dedicated machine for DVD Studio Pro. Once you start installing games and weird shareware apps, you will have issues with crashing and such. Bottom Line: This is a great application for a pro user and does everything "high end" systems like Sonic does, but better. Nice work Apple!

1-0 out of 5 stars A poorly conceived product
If you have a Mac, you really have no choice, this is all there is, and that's a shame. After using this program for the past month, I am considering buying a PC, and throwing away my Mac. It's that bad. Where Final Cut Pro shines, DVD Studio Pro [is not good]. If you do buy this software, be sure and buy Martin Sitter's excellent how-to book, as the slim provided manual tells you nothing. Martin Sitter's book will have you turning out DVD's in no time, provided you don't do something crazy like try to create a disc with subtitles.
This software is incredibly buggy. It crashes constantly. The Subtitle Editor (STE) is worse than useless, it is a crime against all of us who purchased this. Apple should be sued.
The STE uses non-drop-frame timecode, while the rest of the software demands you use dropframe (or else your audio won't synchronize properly). This leads to horrible build conflicts when chapter markers and subtitles are used together. (Unless you don't care if your audio is synced.)
Did I mention the crashes? The Apple DVD player is worthless, it won't even play commercial DVD's without crashing. Then there problems with DVD-9 layer breaks - I haven't tried building a DVD-9 yet, but I'm not looking forward to it, based on what I've read online. This program should not be sold as it is. ...
