Amazon.com Review

If your child enjoys tea parties, castles, and princess prettiness,Disney's Beauty and the Beast Activity Center will enrapture her. Andlike its protagonist, Belle, this program has the right balance of beauty andbrains.

A gorgeous opening leads to the foyer of the Beast's castle where Belle andCogsworth, the worrywart clock, and Lumiere, the candle with the MauriceChevalier accent, are preparing a surprise party for the Beast. Visitors musthelp the castle's denizens prepare for the party in four different areas. Mrs.Pott's Teatime Table is in the kitchen, where guests must help set the table forthree different meals; a rotating table gives this mundane-sounding task a funspin. It takes good timing and hand-eye coordination to drop scoops of ice creamfrom high up on the shelf to the dishes spinning dizzily below.

In the ballroom, visitors can pick music, decorations, and a gown for Belle, aswell as choreograph dance steps in an activity that teaches sequencing andprogramming skills. Cogsworth's Library Mystery is another smart activity;players must use descriptive clues to eliminate books, then decide which of theremaining tomes hides part of a key that's necessary to unlock the Beast's lair.Belle's Writing Desk is a non-structured activity in which kids can createstained-glass windows, cards, party invitations, and other masterpieces. TheTeatime Table and the Library Mystery have three levels of difficulty, all ofwhich must be mastered in order to adequately prepare for the big payoff--thesurprise party for the Beast.

Interestingly, the Beast doesn't make an appearance until it's time for theparty. He sleeps in the West Wing, and the castle gang gives explicitinstructions not to disturb him. Clicking on his door earns a gentle reprimandas you hear him snore in the background. This patriarchal bit of ominousness maybe irksome to parents who seek to teach kids non-stereotypical gender roles.

The lavish graphics slow progress somewhat, and it wouldn't have hurt Disney toinclude a few more activities; maybe they should have made the Beast get off hiscouch and go get something nice for Belle. (Ages 5 and older) --AnneErickson ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Has Wonderful Potential
I have bought this game 3 different times. It would be wonderful, if it would work properly with XP. I originally thought the CD rom itself was damaged somehow, I really wish that had been the problem. DISNEY you need to spend the money and fix the game. I truly believe it would be worth your while. Until then, I would not buy this game. The sound is choppy and the picture is jerky. The sound is critical to playing the game. I was able to play through the entire game once on Windows 98. It was great, my daughter loved it and so did I. It is is shame they don't keep up with the times.

2-0 out of 5 stars Trouble running on Windows XP
I honestly liked this product; decent games, very nice graphics, and most importantly my 2 year old loved it.

However, I could not get the sound to function properly; when it works at all it is choppy, cuts off words, and sometimes even sounds like a broken record. I thought of keeping the software but it the sound is just too annoying and you need it to play the games.

I believe the problem is that I'm running Windows XP, and since this Disney software is a few years old it does not run properly on XP. There's actually a disclaimer in the instructions saying they cannot guarantee compatibility on Windows 2000 (XP is based on Win 2000.) The manual mentions to update all drivers on your computer, all mine are brand new for XP.

For what it's worth, after exhausting the manual and the included product troubleshooting, I found a pretty good troubleshooting page on Disney's website at: http://asp.interactive.go.com/support/disney/index.asp

5-0 out of 5 stars An Enchanted Party!!
This is a CD-ROM no computer should be without!! It's Simply Magical!!
When you sign in, you will have 2 options. You can use your own name, or use the name that they give you. It could be Lumiere, Mrs. Potts, or The Beast. But most likely, it will be Belle. As you begin, you will meet Belle, Lumiere, and Cogsworth in the foyer. They will tell you that they are planning a surprise party for The Beast. They will tell you that in order to surprise him, certain things need to be done in the castle, and that you can play those activities to help get everything done for the party. Pssssttt, be sure to be on the look out for secret passages in every room. And to go back
To the foyer, click on the magic mirror. If you're in the foyer and you want to quit, click on the magic mirror. If you want to see the credits, click on the rose bush in the foyer. If you want to go back to sign in and change games, click on the green rug with the rose on it, in the foyer.

There are four games and two mini movies in this CD-ROM. We'll start at the games. The first came is called Belle Of The Ball. Here, you can choose the dress that Belle will wear at the ball, when you click on Wardrobe. You can choose the instruments that the musicians will play at the ball, when you click on the chair. And, to create a dance, click on the floor tiles. Then to
See it all put together, click on the doors behind Belle. Oh, and don't worry,
It won't interfere with The Beast's party. The second game is called Mrs. Potts Tea Time Table. Here, you can help Mrs. Potts and Chip set the table for tea, dinner, and dessert. It gets harder with each course. For tea, you only need five things, but for dessert, you need seven. Tip: In the lunch course, with the bread, salami, tomato's, and cheese, just keep clicking on them until all four place settings are complete with that item. In Belle's Writing Desk, you can illustrate and color the story of Beauty and The Beast, make stained glass windows, and make cards!! By the way, the secret passage in here in right in clear view!! The last game you should do last, the CD-ROM will tell you why when you buy it. It is called Cogsworth's Library Mystery. Cogsworth has forgot what books he hid the key to the west wing behind!! And it's going to be you job to help him get the key back. Get the entire key,
And you can go to the west wing and see the mini movie, and see how The Beast's party goes!!

Well that's it. I hope that this review has helped you and encourages you to get this CD-ROM.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun game
My daughter enjoys playing with this game. There are various games, and when changing from one game to the other one has to wait for Belle to speak all the options. This takes a while, and my daughter gets impatient. The food game and the one where a dance is created are fun. The best is the guessing game, as it fosters skills like listening, observation, focus on details, deduction, logic, and making educated guesses. All in all it is a good game.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Beauty or a Beast?
This is not one of the better Disney programs. It's charming at first, but gets old quite fast. There doesn't seem to be that many different things to do on it. It is fun, however, to make up a dance, arrange the music and hallway, and play the food game, but one can only do that so many times. You also rarely get to see the beast. I recommend this to those with a short attention span. ... Read more

I got this game for Christmas and it had no instructions!! It is so hard to play with out the instructions. You don't know what buttons you're pressing without them. The game keeps on locking up and it's pretty slow.If you want to get in a chat room or send e-mails to your friends, the friends have to have the game too! Don't buy this game for your daughter unless there is someone that's really good with computers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
I haven't actually played the game yet, but I have done a lot of research on it. It looks like a game that will be beneficial to girls of all ages, and will teach them lessons about computers and the internet that they will be able to take with them throughout their lives. I would highly sugest this software. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars great game, horrible implementation
Most kids love trucks and construction, so this game should be a smash hit. There are lots of trucks to paint and use on a wide variety of fun construction tasks -- building a castle, clearing an avalanche, etc -- and the kids do love it. But they also get very frustrated. The game crashes often and you can't save, so all the work is lost, and about half the time the crash requires you to reboot the whole computer. The cursor disappears at important times and they game is fussy about getting a veicle to a precise spot before it will let ou move on. Also, it's not always clear what is expected next.

Great idea but badly developed, more's the pity.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good game, lousy UI
I bought the Tonka Construction Game for my 3 year old. First note to parents. This game ONLY runs under 256 color mode which means I have to keep changing the color depth down. Its annoying especially for someone like myself who programs software and knows it would have been trivial for them to allow the game to run under higher resolutions just not lower. Anyway, that aside the game is dearly loved by my 3 year old at least until he gets one of the trucks stuck in some corner of the map. It also has sub-par mouse movement making it not that hard to do and once it does you have no out other then killing the program using task manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL). HASBRO big tech note here, EVERY game should respond to the user hitting the escape key and perform some intelligent exit ideally from the current scene or at least the game itself. So despite all of this, I will probably look at Tonka 2 because the game premise is good and every kid loves trucks. Hopefully, they will fix these somewhat obvious UI issues in which case Tonka 2 could really be a good choice for children's software.

5-0 out of 5 stars He never gets sick of it!
Is it possible to wear out a softwear program?! My 5 year old has been playing this game for over a year and between this and Search & Rescue he never wants to play anything else! He finds it incredibly rewarding - worthy of a good belly-laugh - when he can print out his works of art and certificates! We definately got our money's worth!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great distraction when kid is driving you insane
Even when we have the most well behaved children in the world, sometimes they act up. That is when we stick him in from of the "Truck game". He is 2 1/2 and he does not get tired of it even after winning multiple times. And yes, it is a 256 color game; so, right click on the desktop and change the screen colors (no big deal). When you need peace of mind, it is totally worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars He explains construction stuff to his brother
My 4 year old received this for Christmas. This is the first product that he has used all by himself. I've noticed that his mouse control has greatly improved. I've even overheard him explaining to his 2 year old brother how each of the hotwheel construction vehicles are supposed to work. It really keeps a preschool boy's attention and lets them practice small motor skills as well as learn a little about those trucks that boys this age love so much. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Winnie the Pooh's Activity Center is a wonderful way to entertain your child on a rainy day; with six different activities at three different difficulty levels, kids of all ages can enjoy time spent inside. Also included is the animated storybook Winnie the Pooh's Animated Storybook: Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too, which offers more fun games and reading activities.

In the Winnie the Pooh's Activity Center, a friendly narrator greets you on "a blustery day." He presents activities such as Eeyore's house hunt--help Owl to find a new home; Heffalumps and Woozles--match the characters in Pooh's dreams; and Fly a Piglet--prevent Pooh and Piglet from running into trees and stumps. You may also choose to read the interactive book of Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day, which introduces different activities as you read the story along with the characters.

The gamelike portion is similar to the interactive book, but with better directions. Follow the story and play with Roo, Tigger, and other favorite characters. With each story, the highlighted words (reminiscent of follow the bouncing ball) encourages your child to read aloud and recognize words as they do.

The activities are amusing and, with the different levels of difficulty, mean the software's appeal will last longer than just one rainy day. Your child will enjoy the friendly characters, and you'll find that the activities serve not only to entertain but also encourage reading, matching, hand-eye coordination, and imagination. --Madeleine Miller ... Amazon.com Review

Imagine Barney with a dash of New Age mysticism and a penchant for kungfu, and you've got marsupial martial artist Kanga Roddy, a popularpublic-television star in California. Unlike products designed to hone kids'educational skills, such as reading or math, Adventures with Kanga Roddyfocuses on teaching emotional intelligence--qualities such as honor, respect, and compassion.

Kids must explore Kanga Roddy's world sequentially, beginning in a place blandlynamed the Activity Fair; here they meet Tommy, woeful because he doesn't have aspecial skill like the other kids at the fair. Then it's on to Uncle Pat'sBookstore and a door leading to the magical land of Hi-Ya. Each of the threeareas features 10 hidden games and many clips from the show. The games rangefrom simplistic, aim-the-soccer-ball-into-the-net tasks to more complicatedfare, such as changing stories by inserting new words or trying to outwit theSpirit Stone Puzzler. These games don't do much to increase emotionalintelligence, but the clips from the show--especially the ones featuring PatMorita--are a delight.

Tommy's journey of self-discovery is the thread that links all the areas andhelps this CD-ROM live up to its philosophical premise. However, the producerscould have worked harder to make the activities appropriate to the concept;coloring predrawn pictures and hitting baseballs thrown by Kanga Roddy areactivities that seem designed to entertain more than develop emotionalintelligence.

Some kids are bound to be frustrated by the fact that they can't simply clickahead and see what happens in Kanga Roddy's world; if so, just cryptically say,"Patience, Grasshopper," and leave them to their exploration. If Kanga Roddydoes his job, they'll respect you for it in the end. (Ages 4 to 8) --AnneErickson ... Read more

Relive the magic of the Disney film with The Emperor's New GrooveActivity Center, three entertaining games and an ever-changing art programthat even enables kids to e-mail their creations along to favorite friends andrelations. Quality Disney graphics run true to form, with bright colors, detailed images, and whimsical characters. The delightfully evil Yzma hosts thegames and walks kids through the main menu, so there's no reading required. Eachof the three games has different skill levels to keep kids occupied, and allespecially challenge hand-eye coordination; children under the age of 6--unlessthey're unusually adept--may get frustrated.

The Yzmania area gets positively riotous, with soldiers creeping closer to the topplatform while players attempt to throw color-coordinated potions quickly enoughto halt the onslaught. As games are won on each skill level, new art becomesavailable in the Loomation area, where kids can design animated tapestries froman assortment of scenes, graphics, and characters. This section operates withsimple click-and-drag motions, so younger siblings will enjoy the area even ifthey can't quite get the hang of the games. All the artistic treasures areprintable, and the program manual offers instructions on creating flipbooks--agreat rainy day or after-school activity.

Installation is quick and easy, as long as you don't mind the continuous musicthat plays during the few minutes of setup. If children want to utilize thee-mail options, post-installation is an ideal time for them to do so; installingthe links to the Web will also allow kids to visit the marketplace, where newart becomes available for Loomation.
