5-0 out of 5 stars Saves me money
This payroll runs year after year and that saves me money. It prints the checks and tax forms, but not the state tax forms. After setup, running the checks takes a few minutes. And I can run a payroll anytime I want. Love the printed manual. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Getting Better
I currently use Quickbooks Pro for Windows at my day job, at home I use Quickbook Pro 5.0 for Mac for my home based business. The mac version doesn't have all the features that the windows version does, but I believe that they will continue to upgrade (in fact the 6.0 version is just coming out with the ability to convert data back and forth between windows and mac) I have tried Myob for mac, it is ok, but I still believe Quickbooks to be the most intuitive and easy program with very strong features for tracking everything assosiated with running a business. I am on Quickbooks for Windows more than 12 hours a day, so I know very well what features need improving, yet I still prefer to use the mac for my home business. And I will continue to provide them with my feedback for future upgrades. At this point the biggest would be online banking. I can't imagine they would leave that out for much longer. The 6.0 version already has the Windows to Mac and Mac to Windows data conversion which is what everyone in these reviews have been screaming about.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, very, very disappointing
I am a small business owner, happy using Macs and a long time Intuit user. I was delighted Intuit was again "supporting" the Mac platform and was one of the pre-purchasers of QB Pro 5 for the Mac. I assumed, perhaps naively, that since it was the hot new thing, it would have all the old features I associated with Quicken and all the QuickBooks options for which my accountant had been begging so he could play with my files on-line. Instead, I find that this product just doesn't do these things. No, you cannot export data in PC format. No, the accountant cannot enter the program to organize data his way. No, on-line banking is not supported. This is 2003. What small business wants to be without access to on-line banking?

1-0 out of 5 stars Huge Omission Makes QB for Mac Virtually Useless!
I was thrilled when I heard that Intuit was once again planning on reentering the Mac market with a new version of QuickBooks Pro. It's here, but the thrill is gone.
I was looking forward to getting rid of the Windows PC that's taking up valuable space on my desk; it's sole reason for existence is to run QuickBooks. Everything else in the office is done on Macs.
Software arrived, installation went well. I went to my PC and exported my QuickBooks file to a Zip disk, popped the disk into the Zip drive on my Mac and then tried to tell QB on the Mac to import the file so I could get down to business on the Mac. But what's this... a message that says that QuickBooks for Mac cannot read QuickBooks files created on a PC!
As far as I can see, there is no reason for this application to exist. My accountant has a PC and we email my QuickBooks file back and forth on a regular basis. Therein lies the problem.
If Microsoft, Adobe, even Quark files can go back and forth, then why not QuickBooks files? Until true multi-platform accessibility is writtin into QuickBooks, I'd recommend holding off on the purchase of this otherwise solid product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Using OS 9.2.2
Constantly crashes in OS 9.2.2. Will stick with Quickbooks Pro 4...

1-0 out of 5 stars Mac users ...
Any mac user who can afford accounting software [such] as Quickbooks is probably a professional who uses their Mac for their business. Most professional business use accountants. Most accountants use Windows.

QUICKBOOKS 5.0 FOR MAC CAN NOT CONVERT DATA FROM THE WINDOWS VERSION. Thus rendering it useless for anyone on a mac who uses an accountant and needs to transfer data back and forth.

1-0 out of 5 stars As bad as it sounds
I wish that I had paid more attention to the critical reviews above. Instead, I thought a Mac product had to be good. Unfortunately, though it advertises great things, one can't even save changed versions of the forms it provides. There is no call in number for initial free tech support. The email advice their tech support people sent me failed to solve the problem. I am sorely disappointed and ready to return the product to Amazon, which sold it to me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Oh what a dissapointment!
I purchased First edge last year right after I bought my new I Mac. Love my Mac hate this software program! I agree with the other reviewers, no tech support whatsoever! I had use Quickbboks on my old PC but never could figure this thing out so I returned it! I wonder how much business MYOB has lost due to the no tech support rule. They could use a crash course in customer service. Will never purchase any products from this company again unless they change their policies!

1-0 out of 5 stars A Good Product that Could be Better, but POOR SUPPORT
This product is probably OK for its target market, but could stand some improvements. I use it almost every day for bookkeeping purposes for both my small businesses (web design and book publishing).

HOWEVER, I was infuriated that there was NO tech support for this program. Instead I was told I had to PURCHASE tech support, and this would have cost me half as much again as I had paid for the program.

MYOB should charge a higher price for the product, instead of deceiving people into buying something that definitely needs tech support--at least for the first couple of weeks--and then trying to force them to pay extra for support.

I didn't pay for the support, and have made it thus far (about six months). I am planning to upgrade to either QuickBooks or MYOB AccountEdge at the end of this year.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Reviews
I was excited to install First Edge on my MAC and get busy setting up the accounting for my small graphic design business. The install went without a hitch. MYOB includes a lot of information about accounting in the box and after reading it all, I think I finally understand what double-entry bookkeeping is all about. Definately a plus.

The program provides most everything you need for a small business if you can figure out the somewhat weird interface you are presented with. Could stand improvement.

The biggest drawback to this product is the complete lack of tech support that ships with it. You get NO!!! support without paying [money]. I could not get it to link with my mail program to send email invoices and when I called, I was told I would have to spend [money] to sign up for 90 days of tech support. That [essentially raises] the cost of the program.

I am sorry I bought it. I have never purchased a piece of software where the manufacturer provided no help initially. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly slow, clunky interface, horrible company
The program is decent in terms of features, but it's very slow once you get past the initial screen. It seems like the program was designed in the 80's and updated with duct tape and rubber bands to get the current version.

I recently tried to reach the management of the company because it seems they dropped their personal finance product. I wanted to make sure that MyBooks (and the entire company, for that matter) will still exist in a year.

There is nothing worse than investing time and money into learning a program only to find that it is no longer supported. After almost five days I still have not heard from anyone in Appgen, and that has me a bit worried. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

If you're a fan of the QuickBooks user interface, a Macintosh user who refuses to upgrade beyond OS 8.x, or just plain stubborn, QuickBooks Pro 4.0 for the Macintosh might be your accounting software of choice. For those of us who have upgraded to OS 9.x or OS X, however, QuickBooks Pro 4.0 is way behind the times.

Though not as extensive as MYOB AccountEdge, QuickBooks Pro 4.0 has a lot of the essentials for small business owners. With it, you can create estimates for client jobs; enter and track sales and purchases; create bank registers and print checks, timesheets, and worker payroll forms; run reports to assess the fiscal health of your business; and export data to programs like Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Word.

QuickBooks Pro 4.0 includes improvements in your ability to handle post-2000 dates; print 1099, W-2, and W-3 forms; create customer-contact records and to-do lists; and track invoices, payments, and billing by customer. Those who sell items in kits or tied together through promotional offerings will find the new grouping function makes it easier to take inventory.

A word of caution for those who may be adding to their business's software licenses: this latest maintenance release creates files not usable by Windows QuickBooks or earlier versions of QuickBooks Pro 4.0 for the Macintosh. --Elizabeth Aoki ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Reasons not to buy a Mac
A "friend" persuaded me to buy an iMac last year. "You will love how much easier it is to use than that Windows junk you're used to." Since the price of an iMac was reasonable, I decided to take a chance.

When I bought and installed QuickBooks Pro 4.0, I very quickly learned why Apple is failing.

The Windows 95/98 version of QuickBooks Pro 99 can do anything. I have been using Intuit products since 1990, and have been spoiled by the way such a simple program can handle complicated transactions along with daily business. (When I worked for an SAP consulting firm, the managing partner said he was afraid to make us implement SAP R/3, because QuickBooks performed circles around that million dollar software!)

But when you install QuickBooks on your Mac, you return to the stone ages. QuickBooks for DOS systems could do more.

I called Intuit's customer support (where I tend to get excellent treatment, because I've used the product for so long -- one of my solutions is posted to their techie's help manual) to complain. The techie was very nice and very frank. I should not expect an upgrade of QuickBooks for the Mac any time soon, because the market was not strong enough.

And while Microsoft enables you to transfer QuickBooks data from the Mac platform to Windows 98, the Mac OS will not permit a transfer in this direction. I therefore spent a week of very valuable time re-entering data and setting up the company file.

A shame that Mac-only users will never get to know how good this software really is.

3-0 out of 5 stars Still Lacking
I wanted software to run my business that would be simple to use without an accounting background, as I understood this to be. I was totally misled when I found that conversion from later versions of Quicken were impossible and had to manually enter every transaction. Not only did I have to hire an accountant to assist with Quickbooks Pro 4.0 set-up, but even she had trouble classifying information. There are still some unresolved issues in the set-up procedure. I have listed my personal opinion on the following:

Negatives:

1. Sorting reports can not be done by "Memo".

2. When printing checks, you must manually count how many you are about to print and they still can't be sorted alphabetically. This is crazy!

3. Customer support leaves you on hold forever.

4. Customizing invoices is ridiculously limited.

5. No calendar window.

Positives:

1. Report formatting is effortless.

2. Entering data is as easy as in Quicken.

3. "Find" is more extensive and one of its better features.

4. Being able to print business forms is wonderful.

5. Memorized transactions function is efficient and very useful.

I have tried 3 business accounting programs and I do think that this could be one of the better programs for small businesses even though it falls short in improving on the simplest enigmas. Intuit claims this to be easy to use, which I tend to disagree with. If Intuit would improve their customer support lines and email feedback and also correct the basic problems listed above, I feel they would have a superlative accounting software program. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
Not worth one star.
This is undoubtedly the worst instruction manual I have ever seen. A book would be light years faster than this monster. If you enter a search word it takes absolutely forever searching through the disk.
Then you find inane statements.
I loaded the entire CD onto my hard disk and that is not much an improvement. Why it is even marketed?

3-0 out of 5 stars Mastering Quickbooks 2003 Pro
For the price the product is pretty good. It teaches you the features of Quickbooks well. I purchased another CD ROM for $6 that covers very little. This is definitely superior. I'm sure you can spend about $100 for a better one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Poorly Done
Don't waste your time with this one. All it does is read out loud the instructions already written on the screen. There's no explanation given for the important decisions it asks you to make. (i.e. fiscal year vs. calendar year, examples of how a catagory might be used) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars SMALLER, EASIER, FASTER
I have used this program for many years through many upgrades and find it to be one of the easiest and intuitive to use and navigate. I admit I may have a little different perspective since I'm an accountant. Some people have problems with programs because they don't have the background in accounting to understand some functions. I have used Multiledger to keep the books of several clients companies and have never had any trouble doing anything that was needed. I have also recommended it and trained others to use it. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent accouting solution for small businesses
I notice that I'm the only user giving this software a favorable review. Here's why: 1) Powerful inventory management, 2) Easy, intuitive interface, and 3) cross platform compatible data file. I use the Mac version to manage ALL aspects of our small manufacturing business. We make sophisticated computer displays that contain many components. MYOB supports this with its Auto-Build feature - removing items from inventory automatically. And it's support for tracking the details and history of a particular inventory item is unmatched (unless you spend thousands on a customized solution). Creating and managing purchase orders and sales are effortless and MYOB keeps things organized. Unlike other reviewers, I found the software extremely easy to use - far more than Quickbooks. Some users may have think that MYOB is unforgiving with mistakes but that's how it keeps you in line - some transactions must be reversed and cannot be deleted. It's important to note that if you're used to using spreadsheets and Word files and your check book to manage your business, MYOB may seem overwhelming at first. But give it a try. I'm writing this review after using it for about a year and a half. It manages all aspects of our business, which is doing quite well I might add. Finally, as we've grown we've added more users. The MYOB data file is completely cross platform compatible between Mac and Windows versions.

I'm NOT an accountant, I have no accounting experience, and I feel strongly that MYOB has been invaluable to helping our business move forward. I highly recommend this software.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not made for Mac
When you purchase Macintosh applications you expect the applications to carry forward the ease of use that you have come to expect form Mac's. This product falls short of that goal. The user interface is very difficult to figure out on it's own, and referring to the users manuals is of no use. The manuals only give repetitive and very basic info that is useless when you have a specific problem or question. I have Managed My Own Business for years just using Excel, I had hoped switching would make things simpler. The auto import feature for importing bank and credit card statements is a joke. From what I have heard from users of QuickBooks 5 is that they are no better off. Hey Apple how about your new app being iAccountant!

1-0 out of 5 stars Truly disapointed with MYOB
This company is blind to the need to produce quality products and give good customer service. Firstly, the software is not customizable to the degree we in the Mac community have come to expect. For example, you cannot even resize the windows. When asked why not, customer service tried to blame it on Apple saying that they had written my version, #2, before OS X was released. When asked if they had a fix for this bug the surly girl at "customer service" said that I would have to buy the upgrade for this "feature". This is just one example of poor customer service [another is a minimum $... charge for help]. I say enough... I'm swiching, at great cost, to quickbooks.

1-0 out of 5 stars Slow, Slow, Slow
I upgraded from v2 with great enthusiasm. All I got was the run around.
An invoice that took 15 seconds to process on v2 takes 1 1/2 minutes to
process on v3. Called tech support to inquire about the problem, They said it should run faster than v2, fax computer configuration. Did that twice. No answer. emailed my account file. One week latter, still were to busy to look at it. O yes, if you want to use multi-user platform you must buy another computer to act as the server only. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Small business owners dismayed by Intuit's lack of Macintosh support for QuickBooks will be pleased with MYOB's latest release of AccountEdge Version 2. In addition to easier setup features in this new version and a colorful interface designed with Mac OS X in mind, AccountEdge 2 works closely with MYOB's free QuickBooks conversion utilities for the PC--meaning that the Macintosh can now run the accounting show for your business regardless of any previous platform-related investment in QuickBooks.

Overall, the effect of the new AccountEdge 2 navigation interface is clean and practical, emphasizing the activities of business over accounting jargon, and displaying each activity in the context of overall workflow. The improved bank register allows users to enter all new transactions on one screen--ATM withdrawals, checks, deposits, sales, etc.--and with one click, you can download your online banking statement and have it automatically compared against records on your hard drive. Accounts can now be tracked by name, for those who hate memorizing their account numbers.

Invoicing also got a bit easier, allowing users to add headers and subtotals so sales can be categorized and described in ways useful to the business. Service-oriented business owners will rejoice at being able to bill for time and materials on a single invoice, and at the ability to create packing slips at the same time as creating invoices or orders. AccountEdge 2 continues earlier support of inventory and payroll functions, as well as exporting to file formats that accountants using CaseWare and Microsoft Excel can read.

Small business owners with older Macs, or, rather, older versions of the Mac OS, have the most to gain from AccountEdge 2. Currently Mac OS X won't allow AccountEdge full fax capabilities, and there may be certain problems sending e-mail depending on how the user has configured their mail account. As of this writing, Mac OS X users are also restrained to using the software only in single-user mode; OS X does not permit AccountEdge 2 file sharing and attempting to share AccountEdge files on a Mac running OX S with a Mac running OS 8.6 or 9.x can permanently corrupt company records. (MYOB and Apple are currently working to resolve this problem for future releases.) However, users running AccountEdge 2 on Mac OS 8.6 or 9.x should have no problem running the software in multi-user mode. --Elizabeth Aoki ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst MYOB upgrade ever
We've been using MYOB for our book keeping software for six years now, until this this release, I've had nothing but praise.

However, this version, despite the additional bells and whistles, is slow at best (System: Dual 533 processsor, 384 megs of RAM, running 10.1) and very unstable. No news is available from MYOB as to when any fixes maybe available and the "Marvin" FAQ search is all but useless.
Multi-user problems still have not been fixed, months after OSX was publicly released. MYOB is really working hard on correcting that. Yeah,

AccountEdge 1, in my opinion, ran much better. It's a shame that MYOB forces users to upgrade since they only offer a 2002 payroll update for AccountEdge 2 (which is also flawed). ... Read more
