5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best & most secure OS's
This is one of the best & most secure OS's one can buy. Works great! I don't think I can add anything else that the other reviewers have already said.

2-0 out of 5 stars 10.3 now top notch but lousy license
When 10.3 was initially released it had an unduly restrictive Family Pack license and did not handle multiple computers on the same internet connection properly.
The latest update 10.3.2 solves the software problems.
However, the the 10.3 Family Pack and the iLife Family Pack license have exactly the same language -

"as long as those computers are located in the same household and used by persons who occupy that same household".

For those who respect intellectual property and read their licenses carefully, this means that the 10.3 Family Pack cannot be installed on a Powerbook which then is taken outside the same household nor on another Mac located at another of your personal residences. Apple has confirmed that this is the correct interpretation of their license language.

All Apple had to do with both Family Pack licenses is change
"located in the same household and used by" to
"located in the same household OR used by".

Unfortunately the lawyers cannot seem to agree with that simple change so don't waste your money on the Family Pack unless you can comply with the license or choose to ignore it.

5-0 out of 5 stars 10.3 now top notch
When 10.3 was initially released it had an unduly restrictive Family Pack license and did not handle multiple computers on the same internet connection properly.
The latest update 10.3.2 solves the software problems and Apple is rewriting the Family Pack license to allow installation on multiple computers including ones taken out of the primary residence.
With these fixes 10.3 and the Family Pack are a great deal - particularly for people who respect intellectual property rights.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Deal
For a single computer, 129 dollars is a completely reasonable price for Panther, but when you have multiple computers at home like I do, it adds up to a bit more than I care to spend.

However I am also 100% opposed to pirating software.

Thank goodness that Apple has provided this very affordable package licensing option. Now I can legally install Panther on all 4 of our Macs for less than what it would cost to buy the single user license for just 2 computers.

Why doesn't Microsoft offer something like this for Windows?

5-0 out of 5 stars License clarification
Peter F. Carpenter writes: "This means that I cannot install the Panther software on the Macs located in my other two personal residences nor can a take by Powerbook with the Panther software installed on it out of my house."

No, that's not what the license means. The license says "computers are located in the same household", and defines 'household' as " person or persons sharing the same housing unit such as a home".

Household does not mean "house". It refers to a group of cohabitating people, not the physical structure in which they live. I expect "household" would also apply to second homes owned by a family, but would not apply to homes owned by extended family. So your uncle Joe in the next state wouldn't be eligible to participate in the family pack, but your Mac in your vacation home in the next state would.

There is no problem removing a powerbook from your house, unless you are also removing yourself from the household (ie, the family unit). If your wife kicks you to the curb and asks for a divorce, you may need a new license. If you're just going down to Starbucks, or on a business trip, or to work, I expect you're okay. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I hate Microsoft, but it's a Microsoft world
First of all, let me say I love Apple and dislike Microsoft. I would always choose to support Apple over Microsoft. If you are one of those people that never has to share documents with a Windows friend, then AppleWorks will be fine. I don't think it's as good as Office (or Word or Excel, if you aren't buying the whole Office suite,) but for the price, I'd buy AW instead.

Anyway, my frustration level with AW has reached the breaking point, and now I'm going to have to go out and do what I never wanted to do- buy Microsoft Office. AW is supposedly compatible with Excel and Word documents, but AW has often converted incoming Excel and Word documents to junk, if it is even able to open the Microsoft documents at all. Also, if you want to save an AW spreadsheet as an excel document, don't expect it to transfer your work nicely. Simple data cells it can handle, but charts- no way. As a business school student, it's essential that I am able to send and receive Word and Excel documents without issues. AppleWorks does not do the job.

It breaks my heart to recommend a Microsoft product over an Apple product, but until Apple makes a truly compatible alternative to Office, I have no choice but to recommend that my fellow Mac users buy Office instead of AppleWorks.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice system but...
I like apple works, and it gets me by for my needs at home but for business I need Windows XP. I like the simple interface, and the straight forward approach. I don't like the spell check, and I have had some troubles saving files in a format where they could be opened easily on a pc. Outside of that I'm a huge Apple Fan and I hope they make the necessary changes to get this thing going right. :)

2-0 out of 5 stars There are better choices available
AppleWorks isn't really a bad product - it's been around for quite a few years, previously as ClarisWorks - but it desperately needs an update. For example, version 6.2.7 still doesn't take full advantage of features found in Mac OSX. Furthermore, it has some rather strange interface quirks and lacks some important features (spellcheck as you type, for example). My recommendation: spend an extra $50 and buy Microsoft Office v.X for student and teacher, which is a much better software package. Another option is to buy a drawing/layout software prgoram such as The Print Shop for Mac OSX, by MacKiev, which offers excellent design and print capabilities for all sorts of projects (labels, greeting cards, calendars, etc). Hopefully Apple will update AppleWorks someday soon. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars YOURE PAYING FOR A LOT OF CONFUSION.
This is a well meaning program that will leave you with nothing but doubt and unanswered questions.

Fairfield uses a "picture to words to sound" method for teaching different languages. This is an excellent way to teach a language. It lets the user hear proper pronunciation while seeing the proper spelling (romanized or japanese) for the word. They also slap a picture of the subject so you can achieve a visual connection with the word or words mentioned. That's it, and thats where lies the problem. There is no confirmation in English to what you just learned. This leads to doubt because you don't know if the picture matches the word 100%. You cant make the vital connection between the Japanese word and the English one. To make matters worse not all the picture are crystal clear as to what is being refered to. Anyone who has studied Japanese knows what a difficult language it is to grasp and Fairfield thinks that you can just jump into it with this poorly thought out program. I don't know how well this method works in other languages but it fails in Japanese without that English reasurance. So in closing :

1. Dont be fooled by the "impressive" list of users of this program.
2. The poor structure of this program will leave you confused and reaching for your dictionary more than you'll be able to stand.
3. The price of this software package is ridiculous for what you get. It doesn't make $en$e.

2-0 out of 5 stars Will not give you proper education
You learn the language through immersion. The software immediately presents you with a set of pictures, along with their japanese text and pronounciation, and you have to match the text with the pictures. The text are available in romanji, kana, and kanji. There are no english explanations at all.

First, if you're serious about learning japanese, you have to learn how to read and write kana, and this product gives you nothing in terms of learning kana/kanji. If you leave the text set at kana or kanji, you will be hopelessly lost. If you set the text at romanji, you will be looking at the romanized version of the japanese text, which is useless because you won't see romanji anywhere in Tokyo.

Second, you can pretty much guess at the right answer by process of elimination. The software isn't "smart" enough to deduce that you've actually understood the images presented to you. Also, some of the images are ambiguous. It's possible that you misinterpret the picture and end up with the wrong definition.

Third, this software is horribly slow. You will learn very little after hours of use, and in the end, you will have little or no grammatical knowledge at all.

Given the price of this product, I do not recommend it at all. I suggest you spend your money on the Pimsleur series. They are also expensive, but they will give you a solid foundation to speaking japanese properly. I suggest buying the Japanese for Busy people Kana workbook for learning Kana.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Software but takes Patience
You know that a child doesn't learn a language overnight. However they do learn their first language with out anyone really explaing to them what this word or that word means.

This program uses the same concept of learning. You learn by looking at pictures and actions, and you try to understand what is going on and attribute that to the sound that you hear.

Overall this is great!! It works, and is very comprehensive however it takes alot of patience and work.

If you want to learn a language fast and don't need to know so many words then this program is not for you. However if you don't mind waiting and going through many lessons, and getting a comprehensive understand of the language then this program is for you.

In the end it really depends on your needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best language software I have seen so far
The way this software works is simple. It shows you four pictures and gives you a word or phrase describing each. Then it will ask you to match up pictures and phrases. Later sets of pictures build on vocabulary learned in earlier lessons to build up more complex phrases.

The user interface is one of the easiest to use I've seen, and the sound and picture quality are better than I've seen from other language software. The reason I really like this software though is that it is the easiest and most effective learning method I've found. Rather than trying to memorize words, you hear them used in a bunch of different contexts until their use becomes natural. Also, this method is much better for developing listening comprehension than other methods, which are often mostly visual.

This software doesn't explain any grammar rules. It merely tries to provide enough examples that they can be inferred from use. I find that having a grammar reference that I can refer to in addition to this software really helps with the trickier bits of the Japanese language, although for many things it is unnecessary.

Overall, this software is expensive, but if you are serious about learning Japanese, I would say it is definitely worth the price. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Matter of Choice
InDesign-a lovely second act to the ubiquituous Quark. I have been using Indesign for about three months and while I appreciate many of the differences, I find it a perplexing and often frustrating program. It seems to have a mind of its own. Type suddenly becomes highlighted, drop shadows appear unwanted, and if anyone can figure out the how to line type up on the baseline (the fools at Adobe support certainly don't) please let us in on it. It's a program with too many choices, too many foolish options. Design, while always in the market for options can suffer from too many, delicate controls. I am happy to have learned InDesign, but I must confess it is with some relief and confidence that I often return to that embattled Quark just to get the job done.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now the best, but so was Betamax
Given the creativity and productivity improvements available in InDesign I would like to think the world would drop Quark and instantly embrace InDesign. I'm sure Adobe would like that, too. Fat chance. The CS version is truly a program come of age and a worthy inheritor of the page layout crown. But, alas, the world runs on Quark and that doesn't seem likely to change any time soon. I use it because I have to, not because I want to. I just hope InDesign doesn't become the software version of the Betamax.

4-0 out of 5 stars Takes Page Design to a New Level
Adobe PageMaker has evolved into InDesign CS. Shedding its caterpillar skin, InDesign CS has emerged as a marvelous butterfly. It is fitting tribute that a pen and butterflies adorn the Adobe InDesign CS box.

Adobe InDesign CS software combines production power with graphic freedom. Designers can lay out pages more rapidly. You will find that InDesign CS shares standard Adobe commands, tools, palettes, and shortcuts with Adobe
Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator software programs.

Work More Efficiently with InDesign CS

InDesign creative toolset gives flight to your design ideas. Designers and Illustrators can work more efficiently with InDesign's organized tools. You will save production time by importing native Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator files.

Business designers can work with popular PageMaker features in InDesign CS. This includes data merge, ALAP InBooklet Special Edition for imposition, and dynamic bullets and numbering. InDesign CS easily converts PageMaker 6.0 and 7.0 files with the included document converter.

Work Experience with InDesign

I find the InDesign Story Editor similar to PageMaker Story Editor. Using Control "Y" or simply right-clicking (or control-clicking) the text will call up the Story Editor. This allows you to use live editing for your page design's content and styles.

I can edit text and make changes in a section of my document without having to go to my "Continued on Page . . ." I have found this helpful in a multiple page document. You can set the preferences for font, font size, line spacing and background color.

Unfortunately, Story Editor is not a full-featured text editor since there are no spell checker, outlining, or table capabilities.

You can set your document "presets" for page size, columns and margins that are similar to Printer and PDF Export presets. Using the InDesign selection tool, I can drag the handles and press the shift key to preserve the frame's
original proportions. In addition, you can import styles from Microsoft Word.

InDesign CS has resizing capabilities but it takes several attempts to get resizing done right. I find it easier to resize my photographs in Photoshop before importing graphics to InDesign. This allows me to crop images to my desired shape and resize them.

I can move the palettes by holding the Option key and dragging them anywhere on my desktop space. You can make changes to tables and your headers and footers and line them up to where you want them to appear.

Pro Reaction

The standard Adobe interface works well with InDesign CS, Photoshop and Illustrator. InDesign has nested styles and XML support. InDesign CS has a new Story Editor and better separation and new flattening previews. Noted was improved performance and new tools and palettes in InDesign CS.

Con Reaction

Within InDesign CS, you cannot save files for use with InDesign 2.0 or earlier. You cannot save InDesign files to QuarkXPress. Opening complex pages within InDesign CS takes a large amount of time on Mac G3 computers.

Final Remarks

This InDesign CS version is a full-blown power-packed upgrade. I feel that InDesign CS will convert more PageMaker and Quark users over to the new Adobe InDesign CS program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quark: move aside!
InDesign CS is perhaps the application that benefited most from the most recent upgrade that Adobe made to its key applications, bringing a load of useful and highly expected features and built to take advantage of all the system enhancements that OSX Panther has to offer. I'd like to stress ONE feature, though, that blew me away... two words: NESTED STYLES. If you have suffered through the painful process of laying out a document where more than two styles are required in a particular content block, you will shed tears of joy when you see this at work!

You are bound to also find very handy the enhanced table features such as automated running headers and footers for tables that run across multiple linked text frames. Printers (people in the printing industry) are also going to be happy (or so Adobe wants) with the features that have been included in InDesign CS for them.

All in all, if I were Quark, I'd be shaking because InDesign is not going to stop until it takes over the current market share that QuarkXpress has... it's just a matter of time and perhaps a version or two more. But try CS now: I think you will love it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good solid collection on DVD
This may be the only collection a smaller designer or hobbyist may ever need, as it's so dang HUGE. The interface is pretty good for searching through this monster, and automates the easy export to a wide variety of formats for various uses.

It's important to note that despite the "media" statement at the top of this page, this is on DVD, not CD-ROM; which is a good thing, as the 30GB of pictures would take up nearly 50 CDs, weight a ton, and need a much bigger box!

5-0 out of 5 stars 800K is enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a Beginner or Advanced Musician-at a low price
I received this software on Christmas this year in addition with a MIDI keyboard. This software is excellent! Some say that they prefer Sibelius software but I disagree. This software gives you the power to enter notes in seconds, play with a swing feeling, print, and publish to the web in seconds. If people tell you that this software is aggravating then they do not know what they are talking about. Even if you don't have a MIDI connection, you can simply type notes in on your computer keyboard. If you do not trust what I am saying, go to www.finalemusic.com and download Finale Notepad software. If you also do not want to spend $75 on this software, buy Finale Printmusic! software. for $46.88. on this website. And, if you buy this software and master it, you can upgrade to Finale which is possibly the world's best music producing software.

3-0 out of 5 stars Powerful program but aggravating
This is a powerful piece of notation software. It can transcribe MIDIs, has all kinds of articulations, its notations extends to ALL instruments (not just guitar), can sheet music in from a scanner and read it and convert it, and it can convert regular sheet music into tab (very useful if you got shafted by a songbook that claimed to have guitar notation but only had the chords in a fretboard diagram not the notes), and you can also make your own midis and switch between keys effortlessly. The negatives are that it is not easy to use. Some things seem out of place for example when placing chords you have to click on another menu apart from the Chords menu to get the program to display the fretboard diagram of the chord, replacing notes in either tab or standard music notation is very tedious and sometimes aggravating, placing articulations can be tedious as well, the program will lag your system, and last but definitely not least it has the terrible and annoying habit of changing the tab numbers you copy between measures if your using a certain template with standard notation above it. If you think you can handle all of that then this program might be for you. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Adobe has taken GoLive, its Web design and management tool, and improvedits integration with other applications, adding a number of useful extras in theprocess. In addition to the design elements of the program, GoLive 6.0 includessections devoted to Web site management and maintenance, as well as teamcollaboration.

The main working area of the program deliberately looks much like other Adobeapplications, making it easy to move between them. The main editing windowsfloat on the GoLive worktop, with palettes of functions controlling the tools.Users can now drag and stash palette tabs individually at the edge of thescreen.

The key new features of GoLive 6.0 can be divided into three areas. Under thedesign-and-develop category comes greatly improved table handling, with newediting features--particularly selection--and increased control of HTML code.Adobe has also integrated GoLive more closely with Photoshop, Illustrator, andLiveMotion.

Manage functions govern how several people working on same aspect of a sitehandle different versions and revisions. The revision list is a good example, asit offers full details of who made certain changes to what, along with the timethe changes were entered.

Finally, there's the deploy function, for when you finally launch your site. This feature offers new and improved support for WML authoring, writing fordisplay on WAP devices, XML, QuickTime, and more of the growing family of Webstandards.

Overall, GoLive is a worthwhile improvement if you're thinking about upgradingfrom a previous version. For newbies, make sure you're serious about Web sitemanagement, as this is a heavyweight tool. --Simon Williams ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointing-a mistake
Unfortunately, I purchased this program because of Adobe's reputation. Maybe Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat are great programs, but adobe has really struck out with golive. it has a clunky interface. the ftp browser hangs on me everytime I upload.
the interface is not intuitive. when I edit pages, strange glitches occur.Shareware programs are easier to use, although not as feature rich as golive. Most of the experienced web designers I have talked to recommend dreamweaver. it looks like I will have to buy Dreamweaver

4-0 out of 5 stars A great web application for designers
If you love photoshop, illustrator, InDesign... you should use GoLive for your webs. Some will say this application is difficult to learn and overburdened with adobe-style tool palettes, and this is fair criticism. If you are a photoshop user and have spent the many hours and weeks it takes to become proficient at using Adobe's GUI, then move to GoLive and you will quickly find yourself at home.

If you consider yourself more a designer than coder, and you like designing with Adobe software, then GoLive will let you work the way you like to work. Also, from version 5.0 to 6.0, the coding compatibility has improved, particularly javascript.

1-0 out of 5 stars A VERY UN-intuitive product!!
THis is the worst of the lot. I had used Adobe's PageMill to make tons of websites but now that I've upgraded everything to OSX on my computer, I thought it would be a good idea to do that with my web design program.
Buzz,...big mistake!!
Go Live is SO complicated, it's impossible for me to put together a website.
I can't seem to figure out anything in this program.
I've been long time user of Photoshop, Illustrator and AfterEffects, but GoLive is destined to go in the round file.

(wastebasket)
Come on Adobe! Put something out there that we can use for web design that doesn't give everyone that uses it a big headache that makes them incapable of producing anything that can be uploaded quickly. Speed is everything! I don't want to spend my life trying to figure out ONE application!!!
PLEASE make it simpler!!!!
No update purchase for me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Much too much of a good thing
If you're a Mac user I presume you have little interest in unneccessary complexity--and GoLive delivers a level of complexity & difficulty that would make Microsoft proud.

If designing web pages is your life this may be what you need. And believe me, it WILL be your life for months after you start using this application. You'll get to know every member of the GoLive support team on a first-name basis.

For the rest of us, please, Adobe, make a GoLive Elements program or bring back PageMill.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless. Money better spent elsewhere
The Adobe team has a way of creating complexities for no particular reason. GoLive drowns in its own muli-tier, reverse-logical design. The development team has obviously intended this program to be used by those totally unfamiliar with the concept of straightforward thinking. Every moment using this software is agonizing and frustrating. It boggles the mind to even imagine the possibility of an Adobe team with usability as part of their gameplan. Please stay far away from GoLive. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Jumpstart Advanced toddler
We bought this as a Christmas present for our son that just turned 2. We were looking for an educational computer game for him and we already had Reader Rabbit Toddler (which he loves). When I first started Jumpstart Adv. Toddler I thought it was way too simple, then I discovered that most activities have 2 levels. Level 1 is pretty basic and doesn't require the kids to do a whole lot...my son was very bored with this. Level 2 is much better...in fact it is more advanced than Reader Rabbit. Most of the activities do not require toddlers to click on the mouse, but if you can click it goes faster. I was surprised by how fast my son figured out the activities. He can do most everything by himself, but he still needs me to help him navigate some. This package comes with 3 cd's - school time, song time and art time. THe song time cd has several fun songs that he just loves. Overall I really like this game and have found it to be very educational. As soon as my son has mastered clicking the mouse we will be getting the preschool version.

4-0 out of 5 stars JumpStart Spanish a winner
My 5 year old loves her new JumpStart Spanish program. She has learned to count in spanish and her colors so far. Very fun games and rewards. She is really picking things up fast. We have not had any real computer problems, it has locked up once, but that has happened on other software as well. The sound works well. For the price I would recommend this as a beginning spanish program.

My 2 year old loves this set of CDs. I found that it reinforces all the things we are teaching her.... shapes, colors, numbers the ABC. The duck that sings is very sweet to their ear. I found it sooo great I am buying it for my daughter's school so the other kids can benefit as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jump Start 4TH GRADE ADVANCED
I rented this software from the Library. It is a 3 disc program. My 3rd grader (almost 4th grader) loves the Ultimate Field Trips and Mystery Club volume 3. The fundamentals disc is a little too hard for her right now, so it is challenging. I played it because it looked fun and it was fun for me to play. I love the "mystery" tone of the software. I like these programs because there are fun games that do not get boring, and while your kids are playing the games, they are also learning a lot. Amazon.com Review

The idea behind The Sims is this: the ultimate goal of life is to achieve happiness, and the way to achieve happiness is to satisfy your Sims' needs. That's right, The Sims allows you to create, direct, and manage the lives of SimCity's residents. Each need (Hunger, Comfort, Hygiene, Bladder, Energy, Fun, Social, and Room) can be met by interaction with other Sims or objects: throw a party with the help of a rockin' stereo system, and watch your Sims' Social and Fun ratings improve. Have one of your Sims whip up some food from the refrigerator, and you'll satisfy the Hunger needs of your guests. Or have your Sim engage another Sim in a game of chess: not only will their Fun and Social moods improve, both Sims will gain some points in their Logic skill rating--which might help on the job.

Mismanage your new, simulated family, and you'll be faced with the worst of MTV's The Real World--with a touch of teenage angst drama thrown in for good measure: jealousies will ignite, fights will break out, jobs will be lost, and the house will fall apart. Bringing about such a calamity is almost as much fun as guiding these Sims to material paradise, and takes considerably less time.

A good general rule is that the more expensive the object, the better its ability to satisfy Sim needs. One gameplay goal is to improve your Sim so he or she can climb the career ladder, which nets him or her more money, which allows the purchase of higher quality stuff, which lets you improve your Sim even more. Eventually, your Sim will have a mate, kids, and a mansion with an indoor pool.

Before you decide how to fix your Sims' health and happiness, you need to craft each of your simulated people: pick a name and a gender, decide on personality/astrological sign, and then choose a look from a variety of heads, bodies, and skin tones. After the creation, the next step is to find a place to live. Again, the player can choose from among the empty houses in the neighborhood or decide to buy some land and design a dream house. Building houses is a blast, and the easy-to-use house design interface could almost be its own game: players design the floor plan, put up walls, pick carpet, wallpaper, and siding, and fill the house with furniture, decorations, fixtures, and appliances. You're limited only by your imagination--and your Sims' pocketbook. But the choices you make in designing and decorating your Sims' house are vital.

Triumph or tragedy, each significant event in a Sim's life is captured in a snapshot and saved in a photo album for later viewing. Players can also take photos any time they wish. The photo album feature is cool by itself, but the best part is that you can upload the album to www.thesims.com and share your Sims' sagas with the world. Entire families can also be uploaded and downloaded, as can houses. Want to re-create and manage your own version of Friends? Download the free face and body editor and make Sim clones of Ross, Rachel, and the rest. Want to go really crazy and perfectly re-create the set? Snag the free wall and floor texture editor. With The Sims, you can create whatever--and whomever--you desire.

Toying with the lives, successes, and emotional states of dozens of little Sims is undeniably fun. In the same way that SimCity players develop a condescending attitude toward real-world city planners, The Sims players will begin to see life as a series of needs-satisfying challenges; the game gets in your head. But that's OK: limitless gameplay, endless variety, cool Internet features, and the ability to play matchmaker/landlord/counselor/God makes The Sims a great way to increase your own Fun score. --Mike Fehlauer

Pros:

  • Unique, addictive, fun gameplay
  • Included photo album feature records triumphs and tragedies
  • Free uploads and downloads expand the game and allow swapping with other players
  • Sims are smart--it's sometimes best to just let them act on their own
Cons:
  • Addictive gameplay may cause loss of sleep, job
  • Complex behavioral modeling program--requires serious computing power
  • No pets other than fish

5-0 out of 5 stars Addictive fun for a wide range of ages
I bought the Sims for my 16-year-old daughter for Christmas. Both she and my 20-year-old son home from college for the holidays have had a blast with it. They've both played it individually for so many hours that it's already paid for itself. When they sit down together with it, the comments and laughter that flow from them are a delight. I have spent a bit of time with it, mostly creating and recreating a house (I made it so big the first time that I had no money left over to buy a toilet - my Sim would not have lasted long, I think....). You buy or create your own house and furnish it; create your character(s) [physical aspects, personality]; see to their needs, have them do all sorts of things from dance to tickle to take a shower and get a job. In addition, the computer generates random events (burglars, for example, and visits by other Sim characters). It's a pretty complex and involving game. In fact, be sure that you have enough RAM to play it properly (it works smoothly on my PowerPC 8600 and my son's G3 powerbook, but I'm having to buy additional memory for my daughter's iMac). My one complaint is that you have to have the CD in your machine in order to play, which means only one person can use the game at a time; I assume this is essesntially copy-protection, but does the manufacturer really expect you to buy the game separately for eachperson in a single family? I do highly recommend the game.

3-0 out of 5 stars No Downloads Available
This game has been a hit seller with the PC and it is a truely fun game for all ages. Ive been playing the PC version and there are a lot of fan sites/third party sites where you can download new clothing for your sims, new furniture, new floors and wall paper designs all created by people and third parties. Its amazing what people can come up with! The only downside to this Mac version is that all these things you can download for your game, are only available for the PC version. I tried downloading some on my iMac, but they are simply PC files and will not work with the Mac version. Because of this you are stuck with the clothes and floors that come with the game. Im not saying there is anything wrong with the games included furniture, clothes and wallpaper, its just that you could expand the games possibilities more with these downloads. Even the "official" downloadable objects from Maxis are not even available yet. Maxis and Aspyr are currently working on this.

So this is not to stop you from buying the game, it is just to inform you that the Mac version of the Sims may not be as expandible as the PC version.

2-0 out of 5 stars Depressing game
Yes, the Sims can be pretty addictive. You're trapped in suburbia, with all the daily concerns that go with that: you have to remember to take the trash out, go to work, clear up, take a shower, network with the neighbours, and pee. It's impossible, once you've created these people, not to mind what happens to them -- I felt pretty awful when they threatened to take my Sims baby into care. But on another level, it all seems deeply trivial. In that sense, it's like the worst of real life -- not really what I want from a fantasy game. I like games which have a bit of glamour, and which offer me the chance of something I don't have in real life -- like World Domination, for instance. I'm also too ambitious for the purposelessness of the Sims: I want to be able to make progress and eventually win -- there's no such thing as winning in this game. If the idea of controlling people on the most microscopic level is enough for you, you may find the Sims fun. If you want to control people, but you also want to dream of a different kind of life, and if you're interested in politics and town planning as well as the domestic/suburban idyll, you're better off with Age of Empires, Caesar III (if only they made Caesar IV), Tropico, or Civilization.

5-0 out of 5 stars The sims is an excellent game
The sims is a unique and fun game which you would probanly love. You can create a person and move them into a house. This game allows you to control the lives of a number of Sims and direct their daily interactions down to very minute detail. This is a really great game and you'll have hours and hours of fun.I have some other sim games and I love them all! The sims is such a fun game to play. You can't lose or win. It's like real life. You get to choose what your sims moods are and what they're appearance will look like. You can even create a sim that looks like yourself and control your own life in the sims. This game is the coolest game I have ever boughten.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Computer Game
The Sims is a great computer game, but it does not suffice for all your computer-gaming needs. You'll need another game to switch off with it when it gets old. I have Age of Empires II to play when I get sick of it, and then when I'm sick of Age of Empires I switch back to The Sims! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Mac OS X, Apple's next-generation operating system, debuted to great enthusiasm, but ultimately left users wanting more: more speed, more applications, more usefulness. Sure, it looked pretty, but you had to boot up into OS 9 when it came time to do some real work. That has all changed with the recent release of Mac OS X 10.1.

Improvements across the board within the operating system and support from numerous vendors have made OS X a viable upgrade. Internal improvements have brought the performance and reliability up to professional levels, while software from such vendors as Canon, Epson, and Hewlett-Packard make compatible a wide variety of printers and scanners. As soon as 10.1 was released, we upgraded our Dual G4/450 with nothing but positive results. With multiple hard drives on our system, we're able to dedicate drives for booting into either OS 9 or OS X, thus ensuring backward compatibility.

However, since upgrading over a month ago, the only times we've needed to boot into OS 9 was for using a FireWire card reader (for reading compact flash cards from a digital camera) and only because the drivers aren't yet available. But you don't need a high-speed G4 to use 10.1. It's now become the default OS on our PowerBook G3/400 (FireWire model), responding quickly and running reliably. Airport networking works flawlessly, and Internet and intranet access is rock solid.

In addition to performance improvements, Apple has added DVD-video playback. Since OS X is a true multitasking operating system, you haven't really watched a DVD until you've made it a half-size window in the background while checking e-mail, shopping at Amazon.com, and copying files at the same time--without skipping a frame. iTunes for OS X will play and encode music, as well as burn audio CDs using an internal or external CD-R/RW drive. If you need to burn data CDs, simply insert a blank disc. OS X will detect it, and ask how you'd like to format it: Mac/PC data or audio CD?

Additional improvements in AppleScripting, a customizable dock, video card and printer drivers, and networking add to the appeal. One important missing feature is the ability to print to a remote USB printer. With OS 9, Apple included the USB Printer Sharing control panel, which allowed remote Macs to print to any USB-connected printer on a local Mac. This worked flawlessly for us when printing from our PowerBook to an Epson 1280 connected to our G4. However, there seems to be no such facility for printing to remote USB printers under OS X. Aside from that, OS X 10.1 on a contemporary Mac is a solid performer and a glimpse of how things ought to work. --Mike Caputo ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best OS out there. Period.
I used to hate Macs especially because of their OS. It was old, unstable and Mac users had to wait ages for updates which they had to pay to get.

Well, MacOS X, is by far the most complete and beautifully engineered OS out there (at least on a commercial basis). It is based on NeXT (using the Mach ker.nel) and BSD -- a feature which offers a lot to someone coming from a UNIX platform -- and clearly the best GUI out there.

Some may argue that it is not as polished as it could, but, hey, what is? Windows or Linux? Besides, Apple is releasing free *until now* revisions for download every couple of months and it has improved a lot since 10.0. (the current version at the time of writing is 10.1.2). Release 10.2 is rumoured to have great new features old Mac users requested as well as more language packs and a speedier Quartz. (the graphics engine)

I recommend this to anyone open-minded enough to leave windows behind him/her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Apple At Its Best
With the release of 10.1.3, Apple has really elevated the Macintosh platform to the next level. Internet, e-mail, digital photography, MP3 music, and even home movies are all easy to view, create, store, and enjoy. With the power of UNIX underlying the user friendly interface, many developers are now using this platform to develop applications using a variety of tools including Cocoa, Applescript, Objective C, and Java.

I use applications such as Microsoft Office, Quicken 2002, Palm HotSync, Photoshop, GoLive, and Watson everyday. No longer is it necessary to revert to "Classic" mode.

Now you can connect to WiFi (802.11b) networks and Bluetooth enabled devices. Internet setup is simple and multi-homing automatically ensures that you are connected if you switch between dial-up, ethernet, and wireless connections.

Security is also top-notch thanks to the UNIX core. OS 10.1.3 has a built in firewall that can be tweaked to your individual preference. If you enjoy serving web pages, this system has a built in implementation of Apache. You can add PHP, MySQL, and other tools to build an advanced web serving platform.

If you have a Macintosh and you do not have OS 10.1.3, you are not taking full advantage of your computer.

5-0 out of 5 stars OS X Reaches Maturity
I'm a small business owner and have hesitated upgrading to OS X from "Classic 9.x" until I felt that it would help me in my business, rather then create a lot of work in trying to debug things.

OS X 10.1 seems to have reached this level. I run it now constantly on my G4 Cube and it is THE most stable OS I have ever used (either from Apple or other MS or Unix-based systems). The system stays up 99.99+% of the time, running MS Entourage and some other Classic applications in the background, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

I even run our Windows-only QuickBooks Pro accounting software through Virtual PC's excellent emulation software, native on X! This is one giant step forward for computing needs at work or at home. Plugging in a digital camera through USB or Firewire works flawless and automatic. The interface is beautiful and intuitive and you can feel the power of the Unix engine underlying the software without having to know anything about it.

I just upgraded all our office iMacs and iBooks with memory (cheap these days!) and will network OS X exclusively in the near future.

2-0 out of 5 stars Watch out for USB driver problems and kernel panics
Six months into using OS -X started having Kernel panics (Apple's blue secreen of death). Not running non-Apple programs, multi-tasking, or running peculiar non-standard hardware (Logitech tracball, HP printer/scanner). 5 trips to the repair shop - new hard drive, new RAM, new system board, upgrade to 10.2.8; 4 phone calls to Apple "Support." Kernel panics returned. Lots of web searches - found lots of boards where people have the same experience, and found the only permanent solution was downgrading to OS9 or upgrading to OS 10.3. "Support" denies it's poor USB software.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love OS X, but be wary of the server version
my advice is to make sure you need it before you buy it, but if you know you need it, then buy it. How will you know? If you need it, you would already know that you do. If you don't know that you need server version, then you probably don't need it. Most day to day tasks are done by the normal version of the os in ways that are much simpler than the server tools. Now you do get a variety of nice things with the unlimited client, such as server managment systems, monitoring systems, etc., but if you are just doing a basic install without a complex networking or users/groups system, then you probably should try to do what you need to do with a 10.1 or 10.2 and see if you actually have to own the server. I would say the ideal application of a server install is for a medium to large lab install using netboot, where the actual cost of doing it via server will lower the TCO significantly. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the price
I thought the graphics were weak and seemed limited to either too cutesy, cartoony stuff or overly fluffy granny stuff. I did like the selection of fonts and headlines, though. I am still trying to figure out why I'd bought this one and not just gone for the clip art programs. Based on the good reviews it got, I thought it would be as good as The Print Shop 11 which has better graphics for all age groups.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Great!
I've tried most, if not all, of the greeting card programs for the PC. Now that I'm a Mac user, I'm expecially pleased that there finally is such a good greeting card program for the Mac. This is a good complement to Nova Development's Print Explosion. The predesigned greeting cards in each program seem to be different. Between the two programs you can do a large number of "desktop publishing" projects. And, both programs are much easier to use than the high end desktop publishing programs used by professionals.

4-0 out of 5 stars New Mac user
Just bought a Mac after using PCs for 20 some years. Not much choice in software! This program is easy to use and is fairly versatile - about on a par with the Windows application called "Card Studio" and not quite as versatile as "Print Artist". Was able to produce my annual Christmas card in a rather short time after receiving the software this PM. Menus and commands are intuitive and there is a better than average "manual" in the box. If you have fun making cards you can enjoy this application.

5-0 out of 5 stars How long have I waited?
I swear, we Mac faithful must be patient folk. How long have our Windows friends been enjoying greeting card software for? It's taken two decades for such a product to come to the Mac. Sheeeshh .... But this is a winner. I own Print Shop and Greeting Card Factory, which have nice greeting cards. But these are really high-caliber. And it's 100% greeting card projects. It's really well done. Graphics are great. Sentiments are clearly professionally authored. It's a keeper. :-) ...

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter simply loves it!!!!

I am going to purchase this software and the 3rd grade ADVANCED program so my child can review through the summer. ... Read more
