5-0 out of 5 stars A very solid distribution
Mandrake 7.0 was the first Linux distribution to recognize all of my hardware right out of the box. I've used all of the major distributions -- Mandrake since 6.0. Mandrake has really grown up in 7.0 and is no longer just "RedHat with features". I recommend this to anyone from a user new to Linux to an experience Linux user.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give it a try!
I found the Linux Mandrake to be a wonderful operating system even for the beginner. The installation was easier than Windows 98 and took half the time to install. The Mandrake comes loaded with hundreds of applications including Sun's Star Office which to me now is a must have. (I could write a whole other review about Star Office.) For the Linux newbee I would suggest to know what componets you have in your computer and cross reference them with the Mandrake web site to see if they are supported. Also read the documentation before you install and if you can afford it, give Linux its own hard drive. However if you don't have the luxuary of having a second hard drive, Linux Mandrake can prove to be a good neighbor with Windows. I would recommend this OS to anyone who is willing to learn and wants to try something new. I have tried other flavors of Linux and so far the Mandrake has proved to be my favorite.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful OS but needs work
Linux-Mandrake 7.0 is arcaic now, (Red Hat Linux 7.3 and Linux-Mandrake 8.2 are much better) I couldn't get on the internet with this version. Upside: 7.0 is fast on arcaic computers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Forget the techincal support
If you're buying this box for the support or buying support from Mandrake, then forget it. I couldn't even get the installation disk to boot (something to do with Mandrake having problems with a DVD ROM, despite the fact that every other Linux distribution disk I tried worked), and a request for support only led to a rather dense suggestion and then a referral of my problem to "level 3 support". The latter never responded, not once, not to say "your problem is progressing", not even a "your problem is too hard". Of course "level 3 support" is /dev/null.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible, Just Terrible.
I bought Linux with high exceptations, however when I got home and tried to install it took several hours and when I got to the X - Windows config screen in the DRAKX installer my system froze and would have to reinstall Lynux all over again. On the third time I got the config to work, but found myself at the UNIX command line. Having absolutly no experience with UNIX I was confused. After trying a few things about the only thing I could do was to log on and access a help file. Big Deal.

(ignore my earlier review.)
I found I had made a slight mis-configeration in the setup program, which is why I didn't work. Now of course Linux is my operating system and it is working quite nicely, The problem above was all human error and failure to read the instructions. After reading the manual I discovered what I did wrong and corrected it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Now includes AMD 64
This is the first Linux distribution I've owned that includes both the 2.6 kernel and support for AMD 64 bit processors. I just got an AMD 64 bit based laptop, and it installed without a problem although the knowledge base says there have been problems with booting Windows on some dual boot machines. I originally had problems with my scsi based scanner, but an update cured that. A note to new users: it is important to run the online update immediately after installation; it will save you all sorts of grief. For a brand new kernel, and a new version of KDE (the default window manager), there were very few problems with this release. It is a major release in spite of its .1 designation, and the first release since Novel bought SuSE. Many of us had fears that Novel would do its usual number on SuSE, but our fears have so far not been justified. I have currently installed this release on three of my machines without problems. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic product for both Linux novice and expert!
I have used Linux and NT for years. We have several windows 98 clients. Although Linux is much stabler than NT, I sill preferred NT user interface. But LSP changed it significantly. We can have Linux stability with NT-like user interface!! I used LSp to administer mail, file sharing, web server, and printer sharing; it is almost identical to those tasks on NT!
Although LSP still does not cover 100% of all NT items, I am happy with it, it almost covers all I need for daily operation.

5-0 out of 5 stars great product, Administering Linux is easy with LSP!
We have a NT server , it serves emails, file sharing for 60 persons. It took me quite a long time to set up Microsoft exchange server correctly three years ago. So I was very reluctant to change our server to Linux, even though I already heard that Linux is very stable and cheap!
However, I am really under pressure because our colleagues keep on complaining our server. And I found LSP is a very useful tool, I almost did not have to configure mail server at all! And its GUI is so similar to NT, I even did not read the manual at all! We have now changed to Linux finally, and administration becomes a piece of cake! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Red Hat Enterprise Power at a Free Linux Price
The CentOS Linux 4 operating system is built from the publicly provided sources developed by Red Hat Linux. That doesn't make this the same as Red Hat Enterprise Linux - but it's not too far from the mark.

CentOS Linux is an excellent dedicated server operating system that includes support Intel 32-bit and 64-bit processors.Installation is as nearly easy as any Red Hat distribution, which makes it easier than most Linux systems albeit not as easy as the incredibly user friendly Mandriva and Ubuntu distributions.

To build a new CentOS 4 server, I purchased an inexpensive eMachines T6212 desktop with 512 MB RAM and an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor. Unlike most Linux installations, this was an unbelievably slow installation. The installation took several hours. The installation does an excellent job of automatically identifying your hardware and then presents you with an astonishing list of optional software packages to install.Thisincludes all manner of server tools including relational database servers, the ability to act as a Windows-compatible network server, electronic mail, web servers and full development tools. While not quite to the Windows standard of cheerful handholding, the CentOS installer is a bit more no nonsense and expects you've been down the Linux path before.

Security is a huge issue, and this version of CentOS supports the SELinux security engine developed in partnership with the National Security Agency. The result is a very secure Linux server that meets or exceeds even the most stringent security standards. CentOS includes the iptables firewall, which can be a bit tricky to setup and configure.Still, this can be an excellent way to build a simple and reliable home DMZ.Use the provided fetchmail and procmail services, and you can safely retrieve email from commercial mail accounts like Yahoo!, Gmail and ISP accounts, filter them for spam, trojans and viruses and have your in-house users connect to your CentOS server for their safely cleansed email.

Since I was most interested in setting up an email server, I used the installed Postfix electronic mail server with Dovecot to provide POP3 and IMAP services. Configuration was very easy, but not for the faint of heart.I added Squirrelmail - a web based email client that allows my users to review their email online without needing to use a separate email client, just their web browser.Kind of like Microsoft's Outlook Web Agent. You'll need more than provided documentation to do this.

Once I had the email server working, I downloaded and installed Spamassassin and Clam Antivirus.Within a few hours, I had a well-secure electronic mail server that automatically filters email against viruses, trojans, and spam. All for free.

I'd recommend CentOS to home users who want to get hands-on experience with enterprise-grade Linux servers and to small organizations that cannot afford the high prices charged by certain commercial software houses.A configuration like CentOS in the Windows world can easily cost an organization of 50 people well over $20,000. With CentOS, you can have an equal degree of power with far higher security for free. ... Read more
