2-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but not worth THAT price!
Since I want to get away from Quicken and MS Money, I looked around for other alternatives and found this one. I almost ordered even before trying demo version because nice reviews of others.

PLEASE TRY the demo version first. And, if you have used any version of Money or Quicken, you'll see what I mean.

It's nicely written program in Java, and cross-platform and all, but it's just lack of so many features that others have. And the interface is simple, but not intuitive or pretty.

Note also that it only supports TWO financial institutions for online-banking: American Express and Discover. Come on. Can't do online banking with regular banks? And online banking is not a feature any more. It's a requirement!

Without online banking and other features, what's the point of using a separate program? Almost all major banks now provide online banking, and use it with any spreadsheet program would do the job the way you want for zero cost. (This is the same for ALL personal finance programs that are missing any major features.)

If you are shopping for a good personal financial software, please check:
1. See if the software upload any personal information to their server. MoneyDance seems like it DOES NOT do this. But I know one program does. Be careful!
2. Online banking: does it support YOUR banks?
3. What other nice features does it have that you CANNOT do in your spreadsheet?

If it doesn't meet above "requirements", then you should use your existing spreadsheet or free spreadsheet program, with your web browser for online banking and financial information.

5-0 out of 5 stars The new way to manage your money!
Moneydance, the newest kid on the block of the personal financial software world. Most people probably don't even know about it yet, but this product is the new way to manage your finances on your computer. Being an unsatisfied Quicken user I decided that it was time to look for something else. After some searching, and wading through a host of unsuitable programs, I came across Appgen Moneydance. The site said that I could download a beta version for free, so I tried it. I was able to import my accounts from Quicken into Moneydance without a problem, and learning the rest of the interface took me all of an hour. I found the interface to be crisp, clean, and very simple to navigate. Setting up an account was very simple, and as I began to use Moneydance, I discovered that it uses double entry accounting, thereby forcing the user to account for the deposits and withdrawals in both their originating and destination accounts. I really appreciated this feature, because it enabled me to track all of my income and expenditures.

The graphing and reporting capabilities of the software were better than I expected. Theses features allowed me to keep a really tight grip on all of my accounts, by showing me the activity in a detailed, broken down format.

The stock portfolio manager was just fine for me. I am not a heavy stock market player, and I found the tools provided to be more than adequate. The only tricky part I found was that I had to create a portfolio account before could enter securities, however, when I tried it, the same thing happened in Quicken.

The feature that struck me as being the most powerful is the ability of Moneydance to run on any platform. This allowed me to work on my account on my PC, and take my saved file over to a friend's Mac and work on it through Moneydance on a Mac. This is an overwhelmingly powerful feature, because I am not limited to the type of O/S that I want to use, I can always keep my program and data.

Overall, I was so satisfied with Moneydance I am going to use it to do all of my finances. I will never go back to Quicken or use any other finance manager. I would give Moneydance five stars and highly recommend it to anyone who asked me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cheap and simple.
I am satisfy with the software for what I paid for. However, importing Quicken exchange files (QIF) that contains multiple dependent accounts that span few years still remains a problem. Not sure how to resolve the issue so I started from scratch and keep my backups as is. A demo can be downloaded from their website. Interface is very clean and simple. Support documents are poor at best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Moneydance NOT out of business
Dear Friends: The Moneydance website says that on Feb. 13, 2003, there was a management change, restoring Moneydance to its orignal managers for marketing, promotion, etc. So this software is not out of business. I have not used it yet, but am curious about it, and am not entirely happy with Quicken or Money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Out of Business
MoneyDance seems to have gone by the wayside. No support, no website, nothing. So waste of damn money. Don't get it- if you're looking for support. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

There are two major complaints concerning Linux distributions: the immaturity of the productivity software and the break with the familiar Microsoft Office products (and the files they've produced). SuSE Linux Office Desktop addresses both of these.

First, it includes Sun's commercial quality StarOffice 6.0 office suite, which provides word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, Web-page editing and vector drawing applications along with remarkably complete support for MS Office file formats--which means you can continue to use your existing files. StarOffice's native file formats are all XML based for compatibility with any XML-based applications.

The second string to SuSE Linux Office Desktop's bow is Codeweaver's Crossover Office, which enables you to install and run MS Office under Linux (apart from FrontPage) along with other Windows programs. This is impressively efficient.

To further make migration easy for end users and companies SuSE includes new software assistants that make networking a breeze. Installation on either a clean PC or alongside Windows is simple. On a Windows machine you can resize partitions--including under XP--without losing data.

Internet setup via modem, ISDN, DSL, and LAN is part of the installation process along with establishing network connections, or, as with everything, you can do it at any time using Yast2. KDE 3 is the default desktop, but the Gnome implementation is also excellent.

SuSE Linux Office Desktop isn't quite as polished as Windows, but most PC users could make the swap with little trouble. If you're one of the vast majority of word-processing, Internet-accessing PC users you can do more for less with SuSE Linux Office Desktop than with a basic Windows system. --Steve Patient ... 4-0 out of 5 stars replaced RedHat with SUSE - not looking back!
I had been using RedHat 6.0 up through 7.3 on my laptop (first a ThinkPad 770X, then a Sony VAIO). However, the RH distribution just isn't well suited for a laptop install -- incomplete support of Sony-specific features such as the "jogdial" and FN-keys.

SUSE installed easily and cleanly on my Vaio (PCG-GRX570; basically, a P4-M with 512MB, 40GB drive, and ATI Radeon Mobility chipset). In fact, SaX (the GUI desktop config tool) accurately configured both the LCD display and the external monitor I had hooked up. A pleasant side-effect of this is that when I login, I get a separate desktop on the external monitor -- and at a different resolution! -- than the desktop I get on the LCD. This allows me to show a presentation on an external projector and keep my LCD monitor showing other things. Very cool! The Firewire port worked first time, as did all three USB ports and built-in ethernet.

If there's one thing I don't like about SUSE, it's that they don't make ISO images available for burning to CD/DVD. I understand that they're in business to make money, but they make a complete FTP site available so that folks can install directly via FTP, so why not make ISOs available?

I should mention that I teach corporate Linux classes. Everything from Intro to Linux up to System Administration and Linux Internals. I've written Unix device drivers and filesystems in C, and I do consulting work in C++, Java, and Perl (and occasionally in PHP or Python). I only say that because I'm an "experienced user" and things that might confuse others are no-brainers for me. Having said that, I prefer SUSE before Mandrake, and Mandrake before RedHat (or Fedora). I know what I like and I don't want to spend time fighting with an installation to get it working.

I'm currently upgrading the kernel to Linux 2.6.3 -- and SUSE has provided tools that are up-to-date enough that I won't need to change anything else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Think TWICE Before you purchase SuSE Office Desktop !!
Having researched Linux products for over a year, we decided to give SuSE Office Desktop a spin recently when one of MS's Windows "security updates" completely hosed our PC. Note that the Microsoft automated CRITICAL security download stated that all went fine and rebooted our PC into HELL ! Lost dial-up, scrambled app software, and a bunch of other crap... typical everyday experience with Windoze !!!

So SuSE Office Desktop was ordered. Much effort was invested in confirming all hardware and software was compatible. The enclosed Acronis 8.0 was installed to re-size the W2K NTFS partition so SuSe Office Desktop could be installed for a dual-boot system as recommended by SuSE. Unfortunately as many other SuSE customers have discovered, Arconis 8.0 does NOT function properly and would NOT properly resize our NTFS partitian though it did create the required FAT16 partitian for installation of SuSe Office Desktop. You need to be EXTREMELY careful when using Acronis as it tried to completely wipe-out our Windoze partition and all of our data. Had we accepted the default settings, as SuSE STRONGLY recommends, all of our Biz data would have been TOAST !!! If you read other SuSE reviews here you will see SuSE customers who DID lose all of their Windows files, data, programs, etc. due to this flaw in Acronis.

Eventually after MUCHO hassles we were able to install Office Desktop on a NEW, dedicated hard drive we bought just for Linux, and installed. Unfortunately SuSE's installation routing could NOT detect a standard US Robotics 56K modem nor a standard ethernet network, both of which function under Windoze without problems, prior to the "security update". So after (12) frustrating, wasted hours we have SuSE half-way installed but it's of little value without e-mail and Net access.

We use YaST2 to try and manually install the modems with no luck. We reviewed all the info. in the SuSE manual and on their website, which was virtually useless. So in desperation to get this software fully installed we call SuSE to find that the only way to obtain Tech Support is by going online and registering our product. How do you do that when neither modem installed with SuSE ??? So we gain acess to a Windoze based PC and register our SuSE Office Desktop product. Then we call again for an hour before we actually get thru to SuSE's "tech support". They confirm our software is now registered. We explain the installtion problems and that their Quick Start Instructions do NOT agree with the PC screens, etc. and request installation of the modem/network. SuSE advised that there is absolutely NO Tech SUPPORT for installation of these items, despite the fact we paid $100 for the full Retail package that specifically comes with Tech Support.

Since we do not have the time nor the interest to learn how to become Linux programmers and SuSE's products are clearly NOT ready for Prime Time based on any number of reviews, SuSE is out and in the trash as of today! We figure that between lost productivity from the botched installation, efforts to manually install the modem/network with YaST2 which does not work, wasting out time registering and calling SuSE tech support, removal of this crap that SuSE calls a "a simple, easy installation", etc. plus the cost of the new hard drive and the non-usable SuSE Office Desktop software, SuSE has cost us no less than $4,000 this week. It would have been MUCH less painful to just toss hundred dollar bills in an open fire than to endure the abuse and arrogance that SuSE displayed in our phone conversation.

You REALLY wanna think TWICE before buying this software. If you read independent online reviews of SuSE Linux distros, skip the flowery praise and take special note of all the hardware issues even experienced Linux users had with SuSE products, some of which they could not correct at all.

BUYER BEWARE really, really applies with SuSE's current products in our personal experience. All I can say is we won't get fooled again! This was a $4,000 learning experience which showed us that SuSE can't be trusted despite the claims on their website and product box. The word FRAUD comes to mind... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Heterogenous Office Environments
As someone who must cope with colleagues who insist on sending Office documents as attachments, expecting me to do something with them, this tool is a painless way to make use of all my Win9n "drink coasters" - yes, it may not run the latest games, but for serious office application work, this is a God-send - everthing that it needs to do it does well - Office and Smartsuite applications, with networking, Palm synching - a fabulous product that does NOT have the VMWare limitations of requiring a pre-defined (unsharable) virtual disk or setting up SMB/Windows networking to get to the rest of your machine. VMWare has its place, but this is a great tool for those of us who just need one or two Windoze apps to get Linux onto our office machines.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take control of Windoze
Win4Lin allows me to run as many copies of Win98 as I can put in my Linux /home partition. Currently now I have 15 or so at average 100mb each. What this lets me do is install/uninstall software without the risk of destroying my Win98 installation - and without having to backup a disk, just a directory. Win4Lin installs in the user's home directory in a directory named Win. By selectively copying and renaming directories, I can keep seperate developement environments going for each of my clients, or try an installation and do a uninstall. I have a Personal Web Server and MSSql server copy using Visual Interdev, that allows me to test under Linux without re-booting - just change desktops.

While the limitations for games are well documented by reviewers, Win4Lin is outstanding for business apps - they will actually run faster and safer than on Win98 natively, when no MS file systems are used, under Linux file systems.

2-0 out of 5 stars Limitations
The top requested features not yet available are:

* Direct Device Access: Currently limited to serial and parallel port.

* Direct X (as used by most games): Not supported

* DirectDraw (as used by RealPlayer): Not supported

* Cut and Paste between Windows and Linux: Not supported.

* CD-ROM Recording: Writing to CD-R and CD-RW devices is not supported

* ActiveSync does not correctly sync with WindowsCE-based hand-held devices

By my humble opition, such features have to be outline in SCREAMING big letters on the box and in the editorial review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very easy to use and works great
I downloaded their demo version because I wanted to make sure my programs would work on it. After installing it which went very easy, I installed my Visual Studio C++ 6.0 and compiled an MFC app and a COM module which worked just fine. I have also tested Autocad 14 with it and it worked just fine and so does AOL 5.0 so I bought the program after only a few hours after trying the demo. Works very well and allows me to compile programs within my Linux environment. ... Read more
