Amazon.com Review

Although practically all versions of Linux ship with GCC, a very well-known C compiler with a command-line interface, lots of Linux users are uncomfortable using it. Makefiles, command-line switches, and text-mode debugging are totally foreign to people who have come to Linux from Windows and Mac OS. Freely available command-line Java development tools are similarly troublesome. There's a demand for an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for Linux. Such an IDE should provide its users with a graphical interface for writing code, debugging it, storing reusable modules, and doing other software-creation work. CodeWarrior for Linux 6.0 fits that requirement. It's the best commercial IDE for Linux, particularly if you have experience with CodeWarrior under other operating systems, as a lot of the interface conventions carry over.

Installing CodeWarrior is simple, and the process isn't encumbered by options. Just run the install script on the single CD-ROM, specify a few directories--the defaults will be fine for most people--and let it go. This product is compatible with pretty much all Linux distributions for x86 and PowerPC, including Red Hat, SuSE, Caldera OpenLinux, Mandrake, and Turbolinux. We installed under Red Hat 7.1 (which is based on the 2.4.2-2 kernel) and had no compatibility problems. This product supports both GNOME and KDE desktops.

Once running, CodeWarrior for Linux looks similar to its brothers for other operating systems. When you're developing a program, you're working on a "project," which is defined by a master project file that refers to the files that make up the application. There's a hierarchy editor that eases the management of project contents, and you can choose how the project is compiled (e.g., with or without debugging support). The core of any project, from the perspective of the developer, is its source code files, and CodeWarrior provides a nice code editor--complete with syntax highlighting--of the sort you're used to if you've used IDEs before. Code editors are a matter of personal preference, so take it or leave it.

Speaking of code editing, this product includes a clever sort of visual diff--a utility for comparing two files and finding the differences between them. It's surprisingly slick, particularly if the two source files you're comparing are pretty similar (an extra method here, a missing event handler there). Dark-shaded regions highlight what's in the first file and not in the second; light-shaded regions show what's in the second and not in the first: we found it really handy. A few other sharp features are for Java only, like a property editor and an object inspector. Again, this is familiar stuff if you've used CodeWarrior for Java on other platforms, or Microsoft Visual C++ for that matter.

Buy CodeWarrior for Linux 6.0 if you prefer to do your software development work in an IDE, either because you're learning programming and don't want to be confused by the GNU programming tools, or because you want to leverage your IDE experience as you move into Linux development. This is a great product. --David Wall ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Caution: try mandrake move evaluation disk first.
Have been Mandrake user, loved it. Dual booting with
Win 98 & Win 2k & briefly with WinXP. But not since latest
version which is incompatible with dell machines. Swapped
out the LG cd-rom with a new Sony cd-rom befoe installing
and failed to install. Hope they fix the problem.
Moved to SuSe Linux which installed easily after trying
their evaluation version which can be downloaded from their
site as an iso image. (Takes a long time due to many dropped
server connections even with dsl.)
Mandrake has a downloadable evaluation iso image called
Mandrake Move. Downloads faster. Try before buying.
Best wishes.

5-0 out of 5 stars An easy switchover from Windows-based computers
I've been a Windows user since the early days of 3.1. That said, I've seen the system grow larger, more unstable and less secure with each new version. WinXP is no better, although everyone seems to tout how great it is. Ask any 12 year old hacker and they'll tell you just how easy it is to hack or write a virus for it.

Now, I'm not a total stranger to Mandrake, having briefly used version 7 a couple of years ago. I installed it two weeks before I sold the PC. I was so impressed with Mandrake I told all my friends about it. Unfortunately for me, I built my next PC and some of my hardware wasn't supported by Mandrake, so I dropped it.

Fast-forward to today. I got a copy of Mandrake 9.2 and installed it. I'm just as impressed with it now as I was three years ago. The GUI (graphic user interface for newbies) is crisp and clean, and reminds me of Macintosh graphics. The menus are very easy to use, as well as configure. This is one of the more flexible aspects of Linux. Windows never will give you the kind of flexibility that Linux does.

When it comes to stability at security, there's not much better out there. Linux stability goes without saying. We're always hearing about people who run linux systems for months without a reboot. These stories are not only fantastic, they're generally true as well. In fact, it's not unheard of for a system to be up for a year or more without a reboot.

With rock-solid firewalls, Linux systems are much more secure than MS based systems. The administrator (root) password can be entered if you're making a configuration change, without having to be logged in as such. This makes quick changes to the system fast and painless. User accounts are also more configurable than Windows systems because user accounts can be tailored per program. i.e. One user may have a higher level of program access than another, while a third could be an admin for that program.

Because Linux is open-source, there are literally thousands of people looking at the very code the programs are made up of. If they see any vulnerability in the system, it's changed immediately. This is an inherent problem with MS, as they have only a small number of software engineers who actually see the code. The more people look at a problem, the more likely it is to be solved.

Mandrake has done some good things with the kernel (base Linux program) by adding their own flair. The purchased versions of Mandrake come with some excellent software like VMWare, which allows you to install Windows in a Mandrake 'subsystem'. You lose some performance because Windows runs in a Linux 'Window', but I think it's worth it.

The program comes with the install CDs (7) which contain the OS and literally thousands of programs to make using Mandrake complete. It also comes with a starter guide to help you get up and running. The only thing I'd like to see in this pack is the reference manual that's included with the Pro version. This book contains lots of information that should be readily available to all users, not just the pros. Online documentation is also difficult to sort through in a pinch. Still, I can't give it less than 5 stars for the reasons I've outlined.

Summary: It's easy to install and configure. It's ultra reliable and secure. It's inexpensive. All-in-all, it's a great program.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Mandrake version w/ some updates...
I am a big fan of the Mandrake distribution and have been for some time now. It's no wonder; Mandrake has been the friendliest desktop distro going. And for the price here at Amazon, you'll get a better deal than what you would pay at the Mandrake store.

That said there are a few things to look out for in this version.

First, if you have Mandrake 9.1 and it works for you, you may want to hold off upgrading as there aren't too many improvements easily noticed by the user--unless you count any eye candy and icon changes.

One of the big "gotchas" to look out for is a bug concerning the menus.

If you do a clean install of Mandrake 9.2 (or even an update), on many systems, after the initial install and after running Mandrake Update, your menu items in the K panel and elsewhere will cease to function and disappear. It was pretty unsettling to me as I did not know how to fix this.

The Linux community to the rescue.

After you install version 9.2 and run the bug fix update, restart your machine and boot into single-user mode. At the prompt type "update-menus" and your problem will be fixed. All of your menu items will be repopulated never to disappear again.

Other than this minor inconvenience, it is a solid version containing the latest version of OpenOffice.org's office suite as well as the latest versions of the many programs and apps that normally come with Mandrake Linux.

I was especially impressed with the USB support. I plugged in a USB flash drive and not only did the system recognize and configure the drive, it saved and copied files without incident.

No complaints there.

Again, if you have version 9.1 and it's stable for you and does all that you need it to do, you may want to hold off until the next version comes out. But if you decide to take the plunge, it is another nice product from the good folks at Mandrake and worthy of your consideration.

4-0 out of 5 stars An improvement over 9.0
This is not a review but comments to things I encountered when working with the system.

I have a download version of 9.2 (3 CDs) and I used extensively version 9.0, also download.

Pluses:
Much better support for sound: totem program manages to play all my Windows files.
Better support for external hard disks: my FireWire Maxtor 40GB works very well, and I even can use portable USB FireLite Smartdisk 40GB (both configured automatically!). In fact, it works so good that all my coping on windows partition I do in Linux!

Do not like:
- Connection to the internet still very slow compared to Windows 98SE. I have both Mandrake 9.2 and Win 98SE on the same computer and both connect the same way to the internet - through the router as LAN. Still,
- Certain programs are not easily available (though they may be in full version), like xine; there are some other programs that "dissapear" but I can not recall now. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

PHPEd is NuSphere's answer to the slick IDEs of the big publishers. Designed to work with several languages--HTML, JavaScript, SQL, and especially PHP--the environment works well. Its easy-to-understand interface simplifies the creation of Web applications with HTML and JavaScript on the client side, PHP as the scripting language in the middle, and a MySQL database at the back end.

PHPEd's editor has prime importance. It's clever and uncluttered, and makes three key improvements on the capabilities of a basic editor: syntax highlighting, variable listing, and real-time syntax help. This last feature is especially helpful, as each time you enter a function name the editor will unobtrusively open up a small reference window that contains a one-line syntax guide for the function. You see what the mandatory and optional arguments are, what data types the arguments must be, and what data type the function returns.

The editor is nice, but its features alone probably won't motivate many programmers to pay for PHPEd. Integrated FTP for management of remote files is nice, too, but similarly, not enough to make someone buy. What might tip the balance is the first key appeal of this IDE, its debugger. With the PHPEd debugger you can add variables to a watch list and monitor their values as they change during step-by-step execution of a PHP script. You can also hover your mouse pointer over a variable name during stepped execution and see its value in a pop-up window. In addition to step-by-step execution, PHPEd allows you to establish breakpoints in your code.

The second big attraction of this kit is its ability to integrate closely with MySQL databases. Once you open a connection to a MySQL database from within PHPEd (the database can be local or on a remote server), you can easily browse the contents of the database as you formulate your programming strategy. Then, when you're ready to start writing PHP code that actually manipulates the database, you can test your SQL sentences in a convenient window.

PHPEd is not the extent of this package, however. It ships with a set of Web servers and language interpreters that together make up the back end for which PHPEd will help you write applications:

  • PHP 4.0.6. Naturally, this kit comes with a PHP interpreter. This is the actual run-time environment that reads, validates, and executes PHP scripts (those written in PHPEd and elsewhere). As a server-side scripting language, PHP is similar in function to Microsoft's Active Server Pages (ASP) and Sun's JavaServer Pages (JSP). It's particularly potent when paired with a MySQL database.
  • MySQL 3.23.41. An open-source relational database management system (RDBMS) that's widely used, meticulously maintained, and easily manipulated with PHP. It supports standard SQL-92, and should be familiar to anyone who has done SQL work.
  • Perl 5.6.1. Perl, like PHP, can be used to generate Web pages based on form submissions and query results. Its text-manipulation facilities are probably better than PHP's, but the question of which you use is largely a matter of personal taste.
  • Apache 1.3.20. The Apache Web server makes your applications available to all browsers by responding to HTTP requests. This kit ships with the mod_perl module for running Perl scripts and the mod_ssl module for providing Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption of communications.
As is typical of NuSphere products, PHPEd Advantage comes with a set of commercially available books instead of a custom-produced manual. It's a good strategy that keeps NuSphere from having to reinvent the wheel, particularly considering that the books are all generally respected ones:
  • PHP Pocket Reference
  • Apache Pocket Reference
  • Perl 5 Pocket Reference, Third Edition
  • MySQL/PHP Database Applications
The "advantage" in this product's name refers to a subscription service that comes in addition to the CD-ROM. Every quarter for a year, NuSphere ships its registered users an update disk that contains the latest versions of the four packages. You get support, too: Web and e-mail support for a year.

Overall, PHPEd Advantage does its job well. It establishes a solid back-end environment for Web development, and provides a good IDE for writing software. The whole solution is reasonably priced. It's a great choice if you work with PHP and MySQL. --David Wall ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Recent Win32 VB Convert
I recently decided not to upgrade my Microsoft VB6 development toolset to the latest .NET product. Basically driven by cost. I then decided to look for an IDE that could deliver similar functionality and decided upon Nusphere PHPed. This is fine product although I do not give 5 stars as I have found the debugger a little temperamental at times. In time I know this product will mature and become a valuable asset.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality PHP development tools
I was a very happy user of NuSphere MySQL when I decided to purchase PHPEd Advantage. I do consulting work for web site developers, and prefer PHP to ASP or CF.

I wanted more than a PHP debugger, which I got, but I am most happy with the debugger. It is very capable, and integrated into the editor and class browser. It compares very well to Visual C++, but I haven't used Visual .NET to compare.

Web publishing is with FTP. I have heard that the new version supports WebDAV and CVS archiving, but I haven't tried it yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional Developers Tools for PHP
Powerful, flexible product. While its integrated debugger is the best I've used, it's not the only reason to buy. The editor does a good job with HTML, PHP, Perl and Javascript. The tool incorporates push-button publishing to remote sites, manages projects, provides a class browser, and is an on-line linter.

Especially nice is its direct connection to MySQL, with SQL statement checking builtin. Direct preview of PHP pages using the (integrated Apache).

Equivalent to Microsoft Visual XXX but for PHP.

Client requires windoze, but servers can be linux/unix. Frequent updates (three functionality upgrades since June). ... Read more
