5-0 out of 5 stars Now includes AMD 64
This is the first Linux distribution I've owned that includes both the 2.6 kernel and support for AMD 64 bit processors. I just got an AMD 64 bit based laptop, and it installed without a problem although the knowledge base says there have been problems with booting Windows on some dual boot machines. I originally had problems with my scsi based scanner, but an update cured that. A note to new users: it is important to run the online update immediately after installation; it will save you all sorts of grief. For a brand new kernel, and a new version of KDE (the default window manager), there were very few problems with this release. It is a major release in spite of its .1 designation, and the first release since Novel bought SuSE. Many of us had fears that Novel would do its usual number on SuSE, but our fears have so far not been justified. I have currently installed this release on three of my machines without problems. ... Amazon.com Review

Linux for Windows is based on one of those ideas that's either brilliant or moronic, depending on your point of view. Aiming to simplify the installation and use of the increasingly popular open-source operating system, Macmillan devised a version of Linux-Mandrake that operates as a Windows shell.

This concept makes installation much less dangerous: instead of repartitioning your hard drive, you create a giant (500 to 1500 MB) image file as a kind of fake partition, then run Linux as if it were a Windows program. In theory, this should make installation easier; unfortunately, the user has to learn just as much to get this version of Linux going as any other, and support is practically nonexistent in comparison with others like Red Hat. What do you do when installation stops dead in a fit of kernel panic? Good luck figuring it out, either from the skimpy docs or the Web.

This product may fill a niche for advanced users who either don't want to partition or need to train Windows users on Linux, but the rest of us should either stick with Windows or get one of the better-supported versions of Linux. --Rob Lightner ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Linux for Windows - Don't Bother
Don't even think about buying this software! I had previously purchased Linux Mandrake 7.0 and was going to repartition my hard drive to use both Linux and Windows. Big mistake!

Not only did the installation fail initially and the documentation was scant to say the least, after I did finally manage to get it installed (somewhat as my winmodem and HP deskjet printer USB both were not supported), then the Boot Magic program could not find root and so I had to use LILO instead to access both OS. LILO is fine but for novices to Linux (me to a degree) it's not graphical like Boot Magic.

Anyway, I decided this wasn't worth it so I decided to uninstall it and totally screwed everything up. I had to go to a friend's house and use his PC to download AEFdisk to get rid of the Linux partition and restore my PC. Well, I managed to get rid of not only Linux but Windows as well, so needless to say, I had to reinstall everything again.

I then decided to try Linux for Window and couldn't get past install but the install.bat file only supports cd-rom drives D thru H. I turned to email support (which advertises 24 hour turnaround) and received a response 4 1/2 days later. I had already figured out by then how to edit the install.bat file and so tried again but this time got a kernel panic error because linux couldn't mount root.

I've given up with this. I'll just build a new box and install linux only on it.

Unless you're a Unix geek, in which case you won't be using Winblows anyway, don't even bother with this crappy software.

Bad software and worse support!

Save your money!

1-0 out of 5 stars dont waste your time in aliens
use a real linux distribution, in your main pc, whit ext2 partition, and whit all your documents secure, and use your old computer to play with windows. don't play with linux

1-0 out of 5 stars Lunix-less
I just loved the Linux For Windows packaging! Three easy steps! Well it is not 3 easy steps. Had a problem right from the get go, as the install.bat is coded for CD-ROM drives no higher than H. My drive is M, but the error message I recieved gave no indication of such. And furnished email tech support was no more helpful. Support could have suggested Windows person (me) change drive letter. Thought of that, but for some novice user? There is not enough documentation in the 2 supplied manuals, espically when it comes to figuring out the video card install. After 2 attempted installs, have Linux 4 Windows on my secondary hard drive, somewhat. Still have a video card problem. Think this Linux 4 Windows is an inductory package for users somewhat curious what Linux is all about. Well fine, if you are able to load Linux it would me nice to have something in the way of at least a few sheets of paper. Showing you how to work the darn software. I still want to experience Lunix, so will have to plan on spending more for a ' seperate ' PC box. After a incomplete install, had to retore Windows, and after many hours, happened to notice my hard drive were no longer DOS. What a mess!

1-0 out of 5 stars dont waste your $
I have two versions of this program, and boy did it mess up my computer. After the install began, and was finished, there was no rebooting my computer. I had to format my drive and reinstall all of my applications and it just made me hate linux even more. If I do build a linux computer, I'll do it as the only OS on the drive and I'll only use my left over parts from my upgrades of previous systems. In simpleer words if you want to try linux use a spare computer, NOT your main computer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very solid distribution
Mandrake 7.0 was the first Linux distribution to recognize all of my hardware right out of the box. I've used all of the major distributions -- Mandrake since 6.0. Mandrake has really grown up in 7.0 and is no longer just "RedHat with features". I recommend this to anyone from a user new to Linux to an experience Linux user.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give it a try!
I found the Linux Mandrake to be a wonderful operating system even for the beginner. The installation was easier than Windows 98 and took half the time to install. The Mandrake comes loaded with hundreds of applications including Sun's Star Office which to me now is a must have. (I could write a whole other review about Star Office.) For the Linux newbee I would suggest to know what componets you have in your computer and cross reference them with the Mandrake web site to see if they are supported. Also read the documentation before you install and if you can afford it, give Linux its own hard drive. However if you don't have the luxuary of having a second hard drive, Linux Mandrake can prove to be a good neighbor with Windows. I would recommend this OS to anyone who is willing to learn and wants to try something new. I have tried other flavors of Linux and so far the Mandrake has proved to be my favorite.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful OS but needs work
Linux-Mandrake 7.0 is arcaic now, (Red Hat Linux 7.3 and Linux-Mandrake 8.2 are much better) I couldn't get on the internet with this version. Upside: 7.0 is fast on arcaic computers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Forget the techincal support
If you're buying this box for the support or buying support from Mandrake, then forget it. I couldn't even get the installation disk to boot (something to do with Mandrake having problems with a DVD ROM, despite the fact that every other Linux distribution disk I tried worked), and a request for support only led to a rather dense suggestion and then a referral of my problem to "level 3 support". The latter never responded, not once, not to say "your problem is progressing", not even a "your problem is too hard". Of course "level 3 support" is /dev/null.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible, Just Terrible.
I bought Linux with high exceptations, however when I got home and tried to install it took several hours and when I got to the X - Windows config screen in the DRAKX installer my system froze and would have to reinstall Lynux all over again. On the third time I got the config to work, but found myself at the UNIX command line. Having absolutly no experience with UNIX I was confused. After trying a few things about the only thing I could do was to log on and access a help file. Big Deal.

(ignore my earlier review.)
I found I had made a slight mis-configeration in the setup program, which is why I didn't work. Now of course Linux is my operating system and it is working quite nicely, The problem above was all human error and failure to read the instructions. After reading the manual I discovered what I did wrong and corrected it. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Linux users have needs, too. Desktop publishing is vital for many wholike to stay away from the more popular operating systems, and Chilliware givesthem that power with IceSculptor. This sleek, powerful package fits in with any Linux install and doesn't eat up too many system resources.

Installation is comparatively simple, though a little guidance from thepublisher would have gone a long way for new users. The interface is asintuitive as any competitor running on any OS, which is essential as thedocumentation and online help are just adequate. The XML-based files can bemanipulated directly using a text editor or using a WYSIWYG window like mostother desktop publishing programs; this can be a tremendous boon for those whoare more interested in Web publishing, but probably won't appeal to mostusers.

The image editor is cool and easy to use. While not as powerful as Photoshop, Illustrator, and their ilk, it is handy and perfect for resizing andreshaping without loading new software. Documents are scalable to any size, andtext is easy to customize with the ArtText feature. For those with high-endprinting needs, full color separation, and CMYK, printing is available andactually fairly simple. While IceSculptor is a giant leap forward in bringingLinux up to speed with Windows and Mac OS in terms of popular applications, novice users should beware or at least make sure they have a guardian geekwatching over the shoulder. --Rob Lightner ... 5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic product for both Linux novice and expert!
I have used Linux and NT for years. We have several windows 98 clients. Although Linux is much stabler than NT, I sill preferred NT user interface. But LSP changed it significantly. We can have Linux stability with NT-like user interface!! I used LSp to administer mail, file sharing, web server, and printer sharing; it is almost identical to those tasks on NT!
Although LSP still does not cover 100% of all NT items, I am happy with it, it almost covers all I need for daily operation.

5-0 out of 5 stars great product, Administering Linux is easy with LSP!
We have a NT server , it serves emails, file sharing for 60 persons. It took me quite a long time to set up Microsoft exchange server correctly three years ago. So I was very reluctant to change our server to Linux, even though I already heard that Linux is very stable and cheap!
However, I am really under pressure because our colleagues keep on complaining our server. And I found LSP is a very useful tool, I almost did not have to configure mail server at all! And its GUI is so similar to NT, I even did not read the manual at all! We have now changed to Linux finally, and administration becomes a piece of cake! ... Read more
