Amazon.com Product Description We all learn our childhood language by associating new words and phrases with the world around us. The Rosetta Stone method replicates this process by presenting vivid, real-life images to convey the meaning of each new phrase. Instead of translating, memorizing, and studying rules of grammar, you actually learn to think in the new language. Vocabulary and grammar are integrated systematically, leading to everyday proficiency. The Rosetta Stone Level I program offers a comprehensive course of study for beginning learners, leading to intermediate proficiency. The program contains over 3,500 real-life images and phrases in 92 lessons and more than 250 hours of mastery instruction in listening comprehension, reading, speaking, and writing. Systematic structure teaches vocabulary and grammar naturally, without lists and drills. There are reviews, exercises, and tests for every lesson with automated tutorials throughout the program. (Ages 6 and older) Reviews (1)
It's clever and a lot of fun if you enjoy studying languages. But ... there's no accompanying book to speak of, just a list of the 3,200 statements without translation provided. Before buying this product, I had previously spent several months studying Dutch grammar (see my poignant review of "Colloquial Dutch" by Donaldson, a fine book by the way). Hence I already knew the rudiments and had a context in which to place those 3,200 statements and make sense of them. I had the fine Dutch-English dictionary published by Routledge, "201 Dutch Verbs" by Stern, and "Colloquial Dutch" by my computer to refer to. I found this course a painless way to review grammar, supplement my vocabulary, and learn to say some useful things by rote. Is this Rosetta Stone approach good for a complete beginner with no prior knowledge of Dutch? Would such a user learn the rules of grammar intuitively by discerning patterns in the 3,200 statements? ... Naaah. I'm skeptical. My advice to a complete beginner is to start elsewhere with a good grammar book like "Colloquial Dutch". I gave the product 4 stars instead of 5 because I have some doubts about accuracy. I found one error that I'm certain of: in one instance an "apostrophe-s" was used to indicate possession. This is good English but bad Dutch. When I called Fairfield to report this error, the employee didn't seem at all interested. He assured me that everything was corrected in the newer version (I bought this product in 2002), but he didn't record or even listen to my error report. Also, I found the word ordering in a sentence suspect in a few instances. Did they just grab 3 native speakers from the street or was there some involvement by a scholar of the Dutch language? I don't know. There are many more examples of action verbs (running, walking, swimming, etc) than introspective verbs (thinking, remembering, etc) because the former are more easily conveyed in pictures. There are many more examples of third person verb forms than first and second person for the same reason. One of the three native speakers has a strange pronunciation. She makes third person singular verb forms, which almost alway end in "t", sound like they end in "s". For example, "zingt" sounds like its English translation, "sings". I never heard this before. Is it a regional accent, or has she just been speaking English for too long? It's confusing, especially in mode-D. This product isn't perfect, but I liked it enough to purchase Rosetta Stone Dutch Level II, which I am also enjoying. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review Disney's Magic Artist Deluxe is one of a new generation of programsdesigned for users who enjoy creating art with computer assistance. In additionto the standard-issue graphic tools, this package makes artwork into a game, with moving animations, sound effects, and some very thoughtful design features. While earlier graphics programs often resembled scaled-down versions of adultpackages, this one is entirely bent on entertaining children and encouragingsprees of creative electronic drawing. Its kit is full of brightly colored, genuinely wacky tools, including robots that run around the screen drawingpatterns on your page and a sprayer that drops animations into the page. Imaginewatching cookies bake onscreen, spreading a line of crawling spiders across apage, or planting roses along the bottom of the screen. Just watching theseimages mutate to their finalized form is delightful--and they come with topnotchsound effects and a good dollop of humor, too. Another area where older graphics programs broke down was in their reusabilityfactor. Once a child had seen and used all of a package's available images, itwas often time to move on to the next contender. However, Disney's MagicArtist Deluxe offers regular updates. Users can download new graphics andanimations from the program's Web site, including packages designed particularlyfor a coming holiday or event. For users uninterested in using prepackaged art, Disney's Magic ArtistDeluxe also offers a full set of tools to allow kids to import pictures ofthemselves and their friends, and then to decorate, alter, and distort them totheir heart's content. Whether they want to build static scenes with Disneycharacters, construct animated tableaus, or digitally bend an existing favoritephotograph, this is a graphics program certain to please artistically bent kidsand their parents through project after project. --Alyx Dellamonica Reviews (3)

Amazon.com Review This two-CD-ROM package starts with a simple vocabulary builder that divides words into categories--colors, foods, and body parts, for example--and then drills users on their Spanish equivalents. Instructors translate each word while providing an image to match the spoken concept. A user's memorization skills can then be tested in a handful of matching games, while pronunciation is honed by speaking the words into a microphone and contrasting with the instructors' voices. The second CD-ROM is where the immersion element comes in. Once users have learned the nouns and phrases on disc one, they are presented with a tougher challenge. While still following a basic matching-game format, instructors speak in complete sentences, requiring the learner to pick out familiar terms and work out the larger meanings of the game clues in context. Along the way, more vocabulary and some basic grammar are assimilated. Instant Immersion Spanish provides an excellent route to picking up enough "getting-by" Spanish for a Latin vacation or to supplement class study. Some users may struggle with the transition to the tough love of the second CD-ROM, but this process is a mirror of the real-world experience of going to a new country where English is not the dominant tongue. The immersion kicks the brain into high gear and accelerates language acquisition by presenting a serious challenge--all while keeping the course of study in an entertaining game format. Those new to Spanish will definitely benefit from the practice of listening for words they know. This first-rate content, combined with bright and easy-to-follow graphics, makes Instant Immersion Spanish a terrific opportunity for anyone looking to grasp the basics of speaking Spanish in as little time as possible. --Alyx Dellamonica Reviews (16)
However, I DO NOT recommend these cd-roms for people with an extensive background in Spanish. If you've taken a couple years of Spanish and have built up a moderate vocabulary, these cd-roms will not challenge you. Also, I do not recommend this program for anyone who wants to learn Spanish grammar. These cd-roms, as their title suggests, emphasize vocabulary, and speaking and listening skills, and they do not touch on grammar AT ALL. Overall, I consider this an excellent program for anyone planning a trip to Spain or Latin America, or for use as a supplement for *beginning* students of the language (an additional book on grammar would help). I really do enjoy these programs, and I just ordered the Russian cd-roms just like it. Since I don't know a word, it'll be perfect.
Pros: Cons: There really is no introduction. You just pop in the cd and BOOM, you begin. The navigation is a little annoying because not everything is labeled so you end up having to click on the help button to have everything spelled out for you. Other than that, I really can't find anything wrong with the program. Like I said, I highly reccomend it :)

When I went to TLC home page to look for a bug fix I discovered that L to SF is supported over the web only and no support by e-mail or telephone is available. There is a fix to correct some problem with Win 2000 so, with nothing to lose, I downloaded it and attempted to install it. The first step was to go to the drive that had the L to SF CD in it. I did this and when I clicked OK it returned to the C drive. Nothing I tried would take me to the D drive. Maybe this works well on earlier versions of Windows, but on a Pentium 4, 2.8 Ghz, with 1 Gig of RAM it was useless.

And now for my biggest complaint about this program and the real reason why I felt compelled to review it. The story is based on an Asterix book where a baby shows up at their house, the comic is called Asterix and Son. Now I guess Eurotalk thought it would be fun to let you hear every single sound as it is written in the comic. In other words, if they punch a Roman and the authors wrote POW! in the book, you will hear a sound like someone getting punched. This is no problem for things like fighting and the dog barking, but in probably 75% of the frames, the baby whines. Again this is no problem in a comic book, since reading the word "Wah" doesn't hurt your eyes. But you would think for this program they would just assume that we know what a baby crying sounds like. They couldn't even let us hear it once or twice and then decide ok we get the picture. They let us hear the baby crying every single time. This gets slightly irritating after the first two pages, by the end of the first CD you will be insane and Italian will be the last thing on your mind, and you will probably be deaf too, so what good is it if you can understand Italian anyway? The baby whines 4-5 times louder than anyone in the comic strip talks, so if you turn it down to a level where the baby's whining only hurts your ears a little bit, you will not be able to hear anything else. BTW it doesn't sound cute or even like a real baby...it sounds like some guy trying to sound like a baby. If you manage to get through the entire story, you will probably enjoy listening to people scratch their fingernails across the board or Celine Dion. Now how could I give this product four stars despite the incessant whining? Well you have to figure out a trick that I learned. You turn the volume all the way down on your speakers, then let the next strip pop up, and see if the baby is whining in it (you will know because it will have the dialogue bubble). Then wait a few seconds, turn the volume up very gradually and when you think it is the babys turn to talk immediately turn the volume all the way down. Hopefully you will get the hang of it before you throw your computer out the window. By the way, until you have mastered this trick, do not, repeat, do not attempt to use this product without earmuffs. ... Read more

Lucky for English speakers - Malayalam is influenced the most by English after Sanskrit and Tamil. Unlucky for English speakers - there's a whole pile of linguistically different sounds involved in the other two parts of the language before English is ever even thought about. Get out your marbles and listen up - if you've got an open mind and a little bit of assistance, you might just end up knowing some Malayalam. The format is wonderful, with sections for basics, food, time, body parts, phrases and more. Each level allows you to go through and hear of all the pertinent vocabulary (this can set to play in a continous loop - a nice way of learning and practicing away from the constraints of the computer). There are games for each section in two different levels of difficulty, and keys that allow you to build memory clues. With each game you accumulate points, and the points are tallied towards a final goal at which you recieve special recognition. You recieve nice encouragement for all correct answers - if you learn anything at all from this, if will definitely be the words for "Yes" and "No"! The overall theme is suprisingly entertaining, without being condescending or childlike. It's very nicely designed, compared to many other language CD-Roms, and doesn't give you the idea that it's the same general template used for 35 different languages (except in one aspect, see below!) This was definitely designed with adult learners in mind, and for what - $19.99? - it has some really nice multimedia functions that keep you focused, including printable vocab lists. I originally had a problem loading TalkNow Malayalam to my computer, but the technical assistance people were helpful, via email, and the problem was easily solved. That was great. I did not give this a five star rating because of the following: The pronounciations are very fast, and there is no way to slow them down. The given vocabulary and phrases are only written in Malayalam, so unless you know to read the script, you are left alone to dissect the more subtle sounds, to which your ear may not be accustomed. Find a native speaker for guidance. Also, if you are a native speaker of Malayalam looking for a refresher, or someone wishing to read and write Malayalam, this is probably not a good scheme for you. It's more along the line of "learn some words and phrases before you travel there" knowledge. A good CD-ROM for more Malayalam intensive language study is available at www.vidyarambham.com And finally, the biggest suprise: Talk Now Malayalam is lead by your virtual guides, an extremely white, northern European couple whose images are always present at the bottom of the screen during the vocabulary recitations. (I imagine they're the standard TalkNow Language folks, but in this case it's very wierd!!) Their lips move to make you believe that these honkeys are speaking perfectly pronounced Malayalam, in voices that would only come out of their slight frames had they been posessed. Perhaps this was a bit of subliminal encouragement for all the WASPs who decided to take a stab at learning Malayalam to impress the cute programmer down the hall. Mind you, this is not a detraction from the lessons at hand, but overall the effect is hillarious. Hopefully it would just add to the fun of learning a new language. "If they could do it... darnit, I can to" :) While this program will not make you a candidate for retiring to Kottayam and ferrying a houseboat along some Kerala backwaters, you'll at least entertain native speakers, and at best win yourself some allies by any honest efforts made. Tie on a lungi and give it a whirl. Best of luck! ... Read more

Book Description Reviews (22)
On the contrary, I think that Wallace's grammar is an invaluable work worth every dollar you spend for it. First of all, unlike other grammars, this one is as thrilling as a detective novel. Of course, unless you are deeply interested in NT exegesis, you will probably find Wallace's huge treatise anything but gripping. But if like me you are an impassioned reader of the Gospel and its original text, you will surely love this book. And the good news is that it is not for advanced learners of koine Greek only. In fact I started using it with minimal knowledge of Greek and I have little doubt that a complete stranger to the language of Luke and Paul could also glean immensely useful information from its pages provided he be a serious student of the Scriptures. Having said that I must warn potential buyers and readers that Wallace is not an objective grammarian and linguist at all. Unlike a real scientist, he does not put aside his own religious and philosophical convictions aside and look at the NT dispassionately. What he does almost sistematically is to advance his own Protestant views of Christ and atonement and other crucial points with the help of Greek grammar. Fortunately, he does state the opinion of scholars who disagree with him but he gives them minimal space. Most of the time he does not even quote them! A perfect example of Wallace's bias is the discussion on the use of the prepositions "uper" and "anti" in relation to the question of atonement. He mentions the fact that W.Bauer translates these prepositions by "on behalf of" rather thanby "instead of" but he does not illustrate or expatiate on Bauer's point of view. Instead the reader is presented with several pages of arguments in favor of his own opinion, so that the naive reader may end up thinking that the translation favored by respected scholars like Bauer has no solid ground under it. And that is only one example among many, many others. Of course, one could argue that many dubious points of Greek grammar simply cannot be cleared without a previous choice and that all exegesis must involve a certain amount of eisegesis. This may be true but Wallace really goes too far. Does he write for only for his small chapel? Aren't there Catholics and eastern Orthodox and Jews out there too? Strangely enough this is a BCE(before common era)/CE(common era)book. Does Wallace not realize that these acronyms are basically anti-Christian and contribute to the secularization of our culture? I say to all Christian authors: FOR GOD'S SAKE USE BC AND AD !!! So my advice to you is: buy this grammar. But be sure to buy another one to know the two sides of the Biblical coin.
Although self-described as a textbook, it is difficult to read straight through.I prefer to graze short sections at a time to get acquainted with the layout and topics.Mainly I use it in conjunction with Scripture study by consulting the (very useful) index of keyed passages. The other indices, however, are cumbersome to use since the entries are not sufficiently subdivided -- you may have to turn to seven or eight pages before you find the information you need. You haven't attained basic proficiency in NT Greek until you are broadly conversant with the subject matter of this book.Keep it next to your Greek Testament.
Again, highly recommended to anyone wanting to "rightly divide the word of truth." ... Read more

In short - a way out of date competitors product you can buy on ebay for $3 is better than this piece of ####. It isn't even worth the time spent installing it (I had to swap the same CD in and out at least 5 times -- what's with THAT?), let alone what3ever money you pay.
