So why the so-so rating? I bought this same title for German and there are four CDs. It had a basic CD, a more advanced CD, a mystery game where you used your knowledge to solve the mystery, and a talking dictionary. I thought I'd be getting the same package, but apparently they haven't developed past the first CD for Croatian. And the one CD isn't much cheaper than what I paid for the whole German package. There are nine lessons on the basic CD, each with about 15-20 words or phases. In two days, I've already aced six of the nine. Obviously, I'm still not quite ready to carry on a conversation. Contrast this to the German edition which lasted me several weeks despite my already knowing a good bit of German. So while their method is a good one, and the presentation is very professional, I can't recommend this unless you'll be happy just knowing things like colors, food, numbers, etc. ... Read more

The immersion method used is outstanding. Learning a language is never easy but I liked how the software works. First, you have to listen to the language, try to remember what you heard, see on the screen, then you are the one involved to actually talk to the computer, or do the activities. You come from being a passive learner (just listening and understanding) to active learner (talking, answering,..). It is way better than being in a class! The progress chart to keep your progress is also very impressive and detailed, it gives you the percentage of activities you did right, and so on. The activities are very fun and interactive: crosswords puzzles, fill-in-the blanks, word order activities, word ssociation...You learn in an interactive and easy way. I was amazed at how much I learnt. I found this software very complete as well: there is an amazing speech recognition feature to help you talk and pronunciate right, also written activities, grammar,...
First of all, the set-up is not very good. The lessons are broken up into individual lessons and there are probably 15 lessons per "section" (date and time, etc.) on each cd (there are 5) The lessons are listed on a Progress Chart (grid-like chart) and its hard to keep track of what lessons were actually completed. Boxes that represent each lesson will be shaded in depending on how complete that particular lesson is. If you don't finish a lesson and click on it again, you will have to complete the whole lesson instead of just finishing where you left off. Second is the lessons themselves. Its very hard to learn a new language when the lessons are basically various formats of lessons that throw phrases at you and expect you to figure them out. For instance, several of the lessons involve putting a mixed-up sentence (in Italian) into its correct format or matching an Italian word with its Italian synonym. Others involve crossword puzzles. These are all in Italian. If you don't know basic Italian, its very hard to figure them out. For a beginner this just doesn't work very well. I had no idea what these words meant to begin with, let alone try to figure out how to put them into correct sentence format and actually learn anything besides frustration! Lastly, my help button feature didn't work. I couldn't ask for help if I wanted to. The software didn't include any instructions so lack of help was a definite issue. Overall, I believe that the software is very confusing and didn't help at all with my learning the language. This software may be fine for an intermediate or advanced "student" but for a beginner very new to the language it just doesn't work. ... Read more

The first CD deals with beginning words and phrases, by playing simple games, such as telling time, colors, articles of clothing and asking questions such as where is the bathroom, how much is this and where are my suitcases. It teaches you certain foods like eggs, fruits, fast foods and eating utensils (including chopsticks!). This first disc is easy going but a great companion to this program is the book "Beginners Russian Script" a Teach Yourself Product sold here at Amazon.com that helps you to define how the letters should sound. The first disc went much easier after I started reading this book. The second CD jumps right into it with game playing on a higher level. Which if you haven't mastered the simple basics, you'll be lost. Before I started this program I knew absolutely no Russian words and now I can speak the very basics. It's a great way to start learning Russian.
So far, so good. But then when you switch to the 2nd CDrom.. all of a sudden EVERYTHING is in Russian including the game instructions, verbal and written cues plus you're required to do some comparatively sophisticated manipulation of language in the games themselves--skills that the first CDrom did nothing to teach! It's sort of like being moved from first week, Level 1 Russian straight to a 2nd year college class. This produces a lot of frustration. To be effective there should be 4 more carefully stepped CDroms inserted between the 2.
I'd only give it one star, but I'll give it two because it's so cheap and you could learn something from this if you put forth serious effort. But you'd be better off buying the Penguin Russian course instead for almost the same price.
1) I have XP. This CD works on XP. I found this program very useful in learning some important basic vocabulary and getting more comfortable hearing and interacting with spoken Russian. The first CD is set up as a series of lessons and games on 8 different topics -- basic words (hello, goodbye, excuse me, etc.), foods, numbers, time of day, basic phrases, body parts, countries, and objects you might buy shopping like clothes. In the lesson, a picture is shown, for example a plane. The word for plane is shown in English and in Russian (in cyrillic) and a Russian speaker says the word. There are two speakers on the CD, with noticeably different accents. It is interesting to compare the two accents and sort of triangulate the standard pronunciation. It also helps when you can't understand one of them, listening to the other one usually clarifies. SO, you see the meaning of the word, you see the word in English, you see the word in Russian, and you listen to a native speaker say the word. This is GREAT! I can't tell you how much of this I retained from all this great linguistic input! So then there is a game to go along with each lesson, which is basically memory. They say a word in Russian and you have to click on the right picture. Simple. There are four different games you can play of varying difficulty levels. And it's really more of a test than a game, but hey when i graduated from college i got an engraved plaque saying i never had to take another test in my life. Didn't you? Anyways... This first CD was really helpful. I really have retained about all of the words on the CD, which is pretty amazing to me. There is also a speech/pronunciation section, but I didn't use it. The second CD is a little different. It's more of the "immersion" that the title claims. They start spouting sentences full of words you probably don't know, and you're supposed to pick out like which picture they're talking about based on the fact that you heard the word "red" and "shirt" in there somewhere. But it's a little baffling. I'm going to hold off on doing the second CD until I go through some of my other books a bit more. But it's essentially set up the same -- lessons and then "games" to test and reinforce what you learned. IN SUMMARY, very valuable vocabulary building. The setup of the lessons lends itself to a high level of retention, and the native Russian speakers are great for self-taught book people to hear. There are no grammar lessons, there are no writing exercises, there is no conversation on your part, there is no instruction in cyrillic, the list of vocabulary could have been a bit more extensive, and you don't even necessarily learn how to spell the words you learn. Therefore, it is only ONE weapon among many you should have if you really intend to beat the Russian language into submission. (just kidding) But it is very good at what it undertakes. And need I repeat that for the price, you can't beat it.

1: You don't have to leave the CD in the drive to use the 'pronounciation' feature. You can optionally install the sound files on your hard disk. (Approx. 532 MB) 2: Multiple pronounciations invoked where appropriate. 3: Installs without a glitch and integrates with MS Word. 4: Has a lot of nice features like 'Spelling Help'. I hope the 12th Edition will integrate with email browsers, not just with MS Word. Also, I would have preferred the thesaurus invoked automatically in an additional pane instead of switching between dictionary and thesaurus.
Merriam-Webster's main good point: Other than that, it isn't a very good computer dictionary. It looks like somebody just scanned the information into the computer. The dictionary has limited space, that's why stuff is crammed in the there, but the computer should read with more paragraph separations which costs no more memory. There are few examples. I also don't like the fact that you have to clear each entry before you can look up the next word, which I don't have to do with Microsoft's. It is a usable dictionary and thesarus, and has plenty of entries. I think it is particular worth it for someone learning English as a foreign language.
My two biggest disappointments were the brief simplistic definitions and that it lacks cross-referencing or hyper-linking within a definition, -- yes, you can easily jump to new definitions from words within a given definition, but, for me, this lacks the learning that comes with hyper-linking. My last comment is that as of January 04, the reviews listed under this Medical Dictionary are reviews for other Merriam-Webster products, but not for the Medical Dictionary. Read closely and notice the reference to a thesaurus that the Medical Dictionary does not have.

However, after I started the program, I like the interface and graphic. The software is better than "Mind Power Math Middle School" from the Learning Company. I also like that it has a game where you can test your skill. I will write an update after I receive a reply from Encore.
So the full fix is: Click on the Advanced tab to bring it forward, and then select the Settings button within the Performance section. In the Performance Options window, click on the Advanced tab to bring it forward, and then select the Change button in the Virtual Memory section. Click the Custom size button... Select SET to accept the change, which will close the Virtual Memory window. Select OK to close the Performance Options window. And select OK to exit the System Properties window.
Well, forget it. They're not the only game in town.
