1-0 out of 5 stars do not buy this item
I have given this item 1 star because there is nothing lower. It might be a good product, I will never know. The first thing you will find is that in order to view the product you will need to download a software package costing an additional $15. The next thing you will find is that if you want a refund from Amazon, you will pay the shipping because this is not their fault (even though this is not mentioned in the description). The next thing you will find is that if you delete the program on your computer you will lose shared files.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK, but . . .
Everything said in the editorial review is true. This method is a lot of fun and the interactive bit really helps. The most useful feature is getting to see a picture, record the word or phrase in Croatian, and then playback your recording next to a recording of a native speaker. Obviously, your computer must have a microphone.

So why the so-so rating? I bought this same title for German and there are four CDs. It had a basic CD, a more advanced CD, a mystery game where you used your knowledge to solve the mystery, and a talking dictionary. I thought I'd be getting the same package, but apparently they haven't developed past the first CD for Croatian. And the one CD isn't much cheaper than what I paid for the whole German package.

There are nine lessons on the basic CD, each with about 15-20 words or phases. In two days, I've already aced six of the nine. Obviously, I'm still not quite ready to carry on a conversation. Contrast this to the German edition which lasted me several weeks despite my already knowing a good bit of German.

So while their method is a good one, and the presentation is very professional, I can't recommend this unless you'll be happy just knowing things like colors, food, numbers, etc. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very exciting, if you want to learn to tell the time.
Well, there's scarcely 10 verbs, many international words in it, like Cola, burgher, a.s.o. .
It doesn't teach anything about verbs, clauses, mutations, prepositions, and all that silly stuff that make you really able to carry on a conversation and to say what you mean.
However, if you want to spend a little time instead of dozing, and don't pretend to learn a language, there's nothing better- save, perhaps, crossword puzzles.
If you know a bit of Gaelic, the only difficuilt game is telling the time, and it's the one that teaches you some phrases you can use ( unless you have bad luck and decide to say I was stolen my passport in Scottish Gaelic- better you don't, anyway you can speak English with cops ).
I admit I said something slightly different in Amazon.co.uk.
As a matter of fact, the more I study Scottish Gaelic, the less I appreciate that game.
If you want to learn Scottish gaelic, try something else- like Colloquial Scottish, by Kathleen Spadaro et al. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars terrible
Stay away from this product. Besides the software setup being very confusing, the lessons themselves don't seem to be organized properly. A good language software should build the next lesson based on the previous knowledge. However, this one didn't seem like that, it would throw new grammar, vocabulary without ever introducing it before; I found this very confusing, had to click on the dictionary button constantly to figure out the exercise. Because I had some background in Italian before, I was OK for the first few lessons, then I was completely lost. I can't imagine anyone with zero background learning anything from this software. Unless you are trying brush up on what you once knew, I wouldn't recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great way to learn Italian
This software is a great way to learn Italian.

The immersion method used is outstanding. Learning a language is never easy but I liked how the software works. First, you have to listen to the language, try to remember what you heard, see on the screen, then you are the one involved to actually talk to the computer, or do the activities. You come from being a passive learner (just listening and understanding) to active learner (talking, answering,..). It is way better than being in a class!

The progress chart to keep your progress is also very impressive and detailed, it gives you the percentage of activities you did right, and so on.

The activities are very fun and interactive: crosswords puzzles, fill-in-the blanks, word order activities, word ssociation...You learn in an interactive and easy way. I was amazed at how much I learnt.

I found this software very complete as well: there is an amazing speech recognition feature to help you talk and pronunciate right, also written activities, grammar,...

1-0 out of 5 stars This software is not user-friendly
I purchased this with high expectation but was disappointed from the beginning. I found this software to be extremely confusing and not at all helpful.

First of all, the set-up is not very good. The lessons are broken up into individual lessons and there are probably 15 lessons per "section" (date and time, etc.) on each cd (there are 5) The lessons are listed on a Progress Chart (grid-like chart) and its hard to keep track of what lessons were actually completed. Boxes that represent each lesson will be shaded in depending on how complete that particular lesson is. If you don't finish a lesson and click on it again, you will have to complete the whole lesson instead of just finishing where you left off.

Second is the lessons themselves. Its very hard to learn a new language when the lessons are basically various formats of lessons that throw phrases at you and expect you to figure them out. For instance, several of the lessons involve putting a mixed-up sentence (in Italian) into its correct format or matching an Italian word with its Italian synonym. Others involve crossword puzzles. These are all in Italian. If you don't know basic Italian, its very hard to figure them out. For a beginner this just doesn't work very well. I had no idea what these words meant to begin with, let alone try to figure out how to put them into correct sentence format and actually learn anything besides frustration!

Lastly, my help button feature didn't work. I couldn't ask for help if I wanted to. The software didn't include any instructions so lack of help was a definite issue.

Overall, I believe that the software is very confusing and didn't help at all with my learning the language. This software may be fine for an intermediate or advanced "student" but for a beginner very new to the language it just doesn't work. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For The Beginner
This is a 2 CD set.

The first CD deals with beginning words and phrases, by playing simple games, such as telling time, colors, articles of clothing and asking questions such as where is the bathroom, how much is this and where are my suitcases. It teaches you certain foods like eggs, fruits, fast foods and eating utensils (including chopsticks!).

This first disc is easy going but a great companion to this program is the book "Beginners Russian Script" a Teach Yourself Product sold here at Amazon.com that helps you to define how the letters should sound. The first disc went much easier after I started reading this book.

The second CD jumps right into it with game playing on a higher level. Which if you haven't mastered the simple basics, you'll be lost.

Before I started this program I knew absolutely no Russian words and now I can speak the very basics. It's a great way to start learning Russian.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad for the Price
This is a two cd rom set. The first one gently takes you through some beginning exercises that are fun and teach you some VERY VERY limited vocabulary that might be useful if, say, you're on a guided tour of Russia with some one else to handle the language for you, and you just want to be able to say a couple of very basic things. (Especially number practice is very well done)

So far, so good. But then when you switch to the 2nd CDrom.. all of a sudden EVERYTHING is in Russian including the game instructions, verbal and written cues plus you're required to do some comparatively sophisticated manipulation of language in the games themselves--skills that the first CDrom did nothing to teach! It's sort of like being moved from first week, Level 1 Russian straight to a 2nd year college class. This produces a lot of frustration. To be effective there should be 4 more carefully stepped CDroms inserted between the 2.

2-0 out of 5 stars Worth the price, but that's not saying much...
I bought this thinking hey, it's ten bucks, what have I got to lose? Well, the answer to that question is ten bucks. If you're broke and want to learn Russian, save your money for food and get a library card. Pass on this.

I'd only give it one star, but I'll give it two because it's so cheap and you could learn something from this if you put forth serious effort. But you'd be better off buying the Penguin Russian course instead for almost the same price.

4-0 out of 5 stars useful tool in your language arsenal
First, to address some practical issues from other reviews:

1) I have XP. This CD works on XP.
2) This company does not make a more advanced program in Russian as they do in other languages. As far as I can tell, this 2 CD set is the full extent of their offerings in Russian.

I found this program very useful in learning some important basic vocabulary and getting more comfortable hearing and interacting with spoken Russian. The first CD is set up as a series of lessons and games on 8 different topics -- basic words (hello, goodbye, excuse me, etc.), foods, numbers, time of day, basic phrases, body parts, countries, and objects you might buy shopping like clothes.

In the lesson, a picture is shown, for example a plane. The word for plane is shown in English and in Russian (in cyrillic) and a Russian speaker says the word. There are two speakers on the CD, with noticeably different accents. It is interesting to compare the two accents and sort of triangulate the standard pronunciation. It also helps when you can't understand one of them, listening to the other one usually clarifies. SO, you see the meaning of the word, you see the word in English, you see the word in Russian, and you listen to a native speaker say the word. This is GREAT! I can't tell you how much of this I retained from all this great linguistic input!

So then there is a game to go along with each lesson, which is basically memory. They say a word in Russian and you have to click on the right picture. Simple. There are four different games you can play of varying difficulty levels. And it's really more of a test than a game, but hey when i graduated from college i got an engraved plaque saying i never had to take another test in my life. Didn't you? Anyways... This first CD was really helpful. I really have retained about all of the words on the CD, which is pretty amazing to me. There is also a speech/pronunciation section, but I didn't use it.

The second CD is a little different. It's more of the "immersion" that the title claims. They start spouting sentences full of words you probably don't know, and you're supposed to pick out like which picture they're talking about based on the fact that you heard the word "red" and "shirt" in there somewhere. But it's a little baffling. I'm going to hold off on doing the second CD until I go through some of my other books a bit more. But it's essentially set up the same -- lessons and then "games" to test and reinforce what you learned.

IN SUMMARY, very valuable vocabulary building. The setup of the lessons lends itself to a high level of retention, and the native Russian speakers are great for self-taught book people to hear. There are no grammar lessons, there are no writing exercises, there is no conversation on your part, there is no instruction in cyrillic, the list of vocabulary could have been a bit more extensive, and you don't even necessarily learn how to spell the words you learn. Therefore, it is only ONE weapon among many you should have if you really intend to beat the Russian language into submission. (just kidding) But it is very good at what it undertakes.

And need I repeat that for the price, you can't beat it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Starter for willing students.
This is a very good program for people who are just starting to learn the Russian language. This program gives students a few basic words and phrases that will help a student get introduced to the language. It is worth the money in my opinion however the program is geared toward a younger age group and does not go very deep into the Russian language. Overall, this program would be a good way to start. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A very nice product; but doesn't integrate with browsers.
This is undoubtedly the best dictionary & thesaurus available today. The features that impressed me the most are:

1: You don't have to leave the CD in the drive to use the 'pronounciation' feature. You can optionally install the sound files on your hard disk. (Approx. 532 MB)

2: Multiple pronounciations invoked where appropriate.

3: Installs without a glitch and integrates with MS Word.

4: Has a lot of nice features like 'Spelling Help'.

I hope the 12th Edition will integrate with email browsers, not just with MS Word. Also, I would have preferred the thesaurus invoked automatically in an additional pane instead of switching between dictionary and thesaurus.

4-0 out of 5 stars good word pronounciation
I already owned the Microsoft Encarta World English Dictionary when I bought Merriam-Webster because I wanted the software to pronounce every word, and Encarta doesn't.

Merriam-Webster's main good point:
pronouces every single entry, including various forms of each word, such as "beauty", "beautiful" plus you can copy the whole disc into your computer, so you don't have to put in the CD every time you look stuff up. Can't do with Microsoft.

Other than that, it isn't a very good computer dictionary. It looks like somebody just scanned the information into the computer. The dictionary has limited space, that's why stuff is crammed in the there, but the computer should read with more paragraph separations which costs no more memory. There are few examples.

I also don't like the fact that you have to clear each entry before you can look up the next word, which I don't have to do with Microsoft's.

It is a usable dictionary and thesarus, and has plenty of entries. I think it is particular worth it for someone learning English as a foreign language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Voice helps me a lot!
Three is no other dictionary that I can rely on more than Merriam Webster dictionary. This new edition, 11th, got all updated words used for internet and new high tech terms with accurate vocal sound. I saw some other dictionary with sound, but this dictionary got most accurate sound that I can trust. For some words that have two sounds, it pronounces both of them.
I can not work without this dictionary.

2-0 out of 5 stars great for kids
The Amazon Features: recommended this dictionary for age 9 to adult and this should have been a big clue. Generally 9 year olds and adults aren't looking for the same things in a product of this type. This is a cute program but all of it is freely available on the Web.

My two biggest disappointments were the brief simplistic definitions and that it lacks cross-referencing or hyper-linking within a definition, -- yes, you can easily jump to new definitions from words within a given definition, but, for me, this lacks the learning that comes with hyper-linking.

My last comment is that as of January 04, the reviews listed under this Medical Dictionary are reviews for other Merriam-Webster products, but not for the Medical Dictionary. Read closely and notice the reference to a thesaurus that the Medical Dictionary does not have.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easier than grabbing a heavy hardback
The MW Medical Desk Dictionary's best feature is that it's convenient. It offers you the option to install macros that put an icon on your Word or WordPerfect toolbar that will launch the dictionary. Highlight a word in your document, click the icon, and it will look it up. Type the beginning letters of a word in its search feature, and it will attempt to match what you type with a word in its dictionary. Where it fails is when you don't want that word and it's automatically filled the search box with some other word, so you have to delete the letters that don't apply. Sure, it's easier than grabbing a heavy hardback, and better than the outdated dictionary I had, but its automatic look-up ability needs serious work. I also wish it was a spell-checker plugin rather than an add-on dictionary; you can't tell Word (or any other Office application) that it's a dictionary you're adding in because there is no *.dic file for the program to find to add in. Still, for the money, this is a very good program if what you want is a dictionary and not a spellchecker. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Can't run software on a computer with 1GB memory
I have the same problem on a computer running Windows 2000 with 1GB memory. The software won't start and gives me the error message "Director Player 6.0 - This program requires at least 3MB of free virtual memory to run". I know there is more than 3MB of free virtual memory on my computer. I tried different virtual memory setting and found that setting virtual memory to 128MB would cause the software to run. It is obvious that the software has mis-calculated the available virtual memory. It interprets virtual memory > 1GB as less than 3MB virtual memory. I have sent email to the technical support at Encore and are waiting for their reply. I share the previous reader's opinion that setting the virtual memory to a lower setting is not an acceptable solution.

However, after I started the program, I like the interface and graphic. The software is better than "Mind Power Math Middle School" from the Learning Company. I also like that it has a game where you can test your skill.

I will write an update after I receive a reply from Encore.

3-0 out of 5 stars Way around memory problem
Haven't tried this software but had same problem with some other software, the error message: "Director Player 6.0 - This program requires at least 3MB of free virtual memory to run". The only fix is to change your virtual memory settings to something below 500mb or to exactly 4000mb. Of course, I chose 4000mb since I have a large hard drive and almost 1 gig of memory on this pc.

So the full fix is:
From the Windows XP desktop, select the Start button, right-click on the My Computer icon, and select Properties from the resulting menu.

Click on the Advanced tab to bring it forward, and then select the Settings button within the Performance section.

In the Performance Options window, click on the Advanced tab to bring it forward, and then select the Change button in the Virtual Memory section.

1-0 out of 5 stars $40 + junk = angry customer
This is a faulty and buggy piece of software. It will not run on my PC (XP Home)without me changing my Virtual Memory from 1000 mb to 200 mb...what an absurdity! The developer offers no solution other than to change my VM everytime I want to use their software.

Well, forget it. They're not the only game in town.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's Great!!
I have the Elementary Advantage, and I'm about to go into Middle School Advantage. I find these programs are excellent. I am a homeschooling parent, and the Elementary Advantage suite have done a great job in assisting me with teaching my child. I've learned a lot myself. My son is about to enter middle school grades, and as I explore the the Middle School Advantage suite, I marvel at how well its put together. I have not run into answers that are wrong as was the claim of one reviewer. But, that does not bother me because you will find wrong answers in educational books written by the best educators. I focus on the how well I am taught the subject. If I can catch the wrong answers then I was taught well. I paid only $24.99 for each suite. I also have a Dell Dimension 4600, and the programs run fine. For all those having a problem running the program. You better get a Dell, Dude! For the money, IT'S GREAT!

If this program can confuse X and Y intercepts I can only imagine what else may be wrong with it. I just purchased this for my son today, but will be returning it tomorrow. He has a placement test in 2 weeks and I don't want him to blow it because of this faulty software. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars it's ok
This product really doesn't have that many words in it. The games are kind of fun, but it doesn't actually teach you the language......just a few words. Mostly it's just matching the picture they associate the word with, with the word. If you want to learn a few words its useful, but for learning the language, it's bad.

Do you ever feel that buying upgrades are a waste of money.Well, this one is a waste of your money.I bought into the hype that you can locate ATM's anywhere in the country and the maps were updated.

If your looking for an ATM in Maine, Alabama, Vermont, Wisconsin, and other states, don't bother.Streets and Trips show there are no ATM's in most of the United States.Canada has a few.

The Maps are not updated as well.A seven year old neighborhood still isn't showing up in Streets and Trips.Other programs and the internet map sites have had our neighborhood for a few years.

If you have an old copy of Street and Trips or MapPoint, continue to use and save your money.I guess this is how a company can continue making a billion dollars a month without creating anything new.Lets hope in a few years Streets and Trips will be brought up to date and include what the marketing guys tell us.
