Great educational product, no substitute for a lawyer though
I used this product to practice writing up my will, my living trust and estate planning documents. It has very good online help, and explains the terminologies, includes checklists, and answers a lot of legal questions. This product will save you time with a real lawyer (who charges by the hour), in that you don't have to ask the real basic questions, since you've already been tutored. The will generated is perfectly legal, but I would advice using a lawyer for more complicated documents. The checklists and the instructions to give to your executor are great, because you can list all of the details you'd want someone to know about in case you are gone.

As others have stated, there was no promised rebate coupon in the box.

Solid, User Friendly, Great for Straightforward Situations
BOTTOM LINE: Quicken Lawyer Personal ('QLP') is a great, low-cost alternative to hiring a lawyer to prepare your basic estate planning document, which will run you a minimum of several hundred dollars. It takes just minutes to prepare a will, but its legal manual/support resources are extensive enough for those that want to spend much more time understanding the what/why behind their documents.

QLP is published by Nolo Press, a well established publisher of self-help legal books. QLP begins by walking you through a number of typical life-stage situations (i.e. young w/ no kids, married w/ kids, etc.) and comes up with a list of suggested documents and along the way explains why you might need each of these documents. When creating a particular document, the software writes all of the legal language for you - you do not write a single word of legalese - and docs are tailored to each state's requirements. To get information from you and have you make decisions about the content/structure of your documents, QLP follows the typical "interview" format - easy to use and informative along the way. My wife and I each created wills, healthcare directives and powers of attorney in about an hour or two.

PROS:
- Ease of use: idiot-proof interview format
- Legal help: good offline manual, good resources at Nolo website
- Clear execution information: tells you exactly what each document needs to be put into effect (some need notarization, some need just witnesses)
- Address book: enter a person's info (i.e. your spouse) and don't need to enter again in other parts of same doc or other docs

QLP is primarily estate planning software. It has a few of the most important ancillary documents (Child Care Agreement, Limited POA for Finances), but Kiplinger's Home Attorney and Broderbund's Family Attorney have a full complement of general use form documents. However, if you look through these lists, most are either not really necessary (Trip Permission Slip you can write yourself on scrap of paper or school gives it to you) or are better left to professionals unless you know exactly what you are doing (i.e. residential real estate sales contract and home services contract - too much legalese in there to just print, drop your name in and sign!?).

COMPETITORS: As mentioned above, Kiplinger's Home Attorney and Broderbund's Family Attorney have a more extensive list of docs (many of which you'll never need IMHO). Home Attorney came preloaded on my computer so had a chance to try it -- not nearly as user friendly, kind of clunky and actually makes you edit the document to enter your name, county, etc - this scares me. Don't have Family Attorney so can't comment on its ease of use, sorry. If you really need a ton of general use forms, get Home Attorney or Family Attorney - otherwise stick with Quicken.

GET A LAWYER IF: While QLP functions well as an advisor, telling you when you might need certain documents or even specific provisions within documents, it has its limits and is candid enough to admit it during the interviews/tutorials. Get a lawyer for situations like: you expect to owe federal estate taxes ($1.5 million limit in 2003 and going up rapidly), you own a small business or you expect to have a messy family situation upon death (i.e. an ex-spouse or children that don't get along) or live in a community property state.

No support?
I bought this software a few months ago but didn't get around installing it until today. When I tried to register the software I got the message that the software is no longer supported! I was asked to call an 800 number to get a discount on an upgrade. This is the first time I ever ran across a name-brand software package that discontinues support before the software is even one year old! While I may still use the software I found it appalling that the publisher of this software dares to force customers to pay for an "upgrade" immediately upon installation of software that they just purchased.

Support ended after just a year and a half????

Value bundle of two excellent programs
This is a bundle of two programs:

(1) Official Copyright Software 1.53 that automates the process of applying for a copyright (see that product page for additional information).

(2)Official Trademark Software 1.0, which automates the process of applying for a tradmark (see that product page for additional information).

While both programs support related, but different, objectives, they share common features:
- interactively step you through filling out and submitting the necessary forms
- provide some advice based on official publications and guidance for copyrights and trademarks
- give all necessary forms in electronic format

Makes applying for trademarks less difficult
This software is actually made by Official Software, LLC (not Enteractive, Inc. as shown in the product page). It uses an interactive interviewing function to step you through the trademark process. The function selects the correct forms that you need, and identifies the classification under which you need to file and lets you know what needs to be included in the submission package.

Provided are editable forms from the USPTO, and advice (also from USPTO) for filling in the forms. As you fill in the forms using the interactive interview process you'll be building your submission package. The program also does online searches to ensure that your trademark is available. However, I strongly encourage you to not submit the completed package that the program builds without first consulting with an attorney who practices IP law. This program simplifies the process and does the up-front work, but is no substitute for competent legal advice from qualified professionals.

If you are also pursuing copyright(s), you will find more value in the Intellectual Property Suite, which bundles this program with the companion program called Official Copyright Software 1.53, which will save money. E-Z Legal Forms is not worth the money
This software package is one of the worst that I have seen in a long time. I was hoping to do a simple promissary note and the forms they provide were not adequate for this. Their form has one paragraph that says penalties will be due if the payment is days late. It will not let you put in the number of days, pretty poor. I would definitely not reccomend this product.

Do-it-yourself legal forms
Great program with over 300 legal forms to choose from. My attorney friend recommended us to buy this software and avoid costly legal fees.

False Advertising
Here is what the software support team told me when I tried to use this software on a Windows XP laptop (apparently you have to have a "tiny" amount of virtual memory for use with computers that have more than 256MB RAM--which is ridiculous):

Official Copyright(tm) software has a compatability problem with Windows 2000/XP computers that have more than 256MB RAM. If this is the case the application will not run complaining that there is not enough memory. This problem does not affect Official Trademark(tm) or any other software created by Official Software. To get the software to work you can do the following as a workaround. This problem will be addressed with the next version of the software.

1. From the START menu select CONTROL PANELS
2. Select PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE
3. Select SYSTEM
4. Click on the ADVANCED tab
5. In the PERFORMANCE section click on the SETTINGS button
6. Click on the ADVANCED tab
7. In the VIRTUAL MEMORY section click on the CHANGE button
8. Select the CUSTOM SIZE radio button, then enter the following:
Initial size (MB): 2
Initial size (MB): 2
9. Click on the SET button

10. Click OK on all the windows and you're done. (Note: You may need to restart your computer.)

Easy application for copyrights
This application makes applying for copyrights as painless as possible (the process will still be painful regardless, but at least you'll be avoiding a large portion of it).

First, a correction. Despite the product page claiming that this software is made by Enteractive, it's really made by Official Software, LLC. Second, a caveat - this product allows you to do a lot of the groundwork yourself, but does not replace professional advice of an attorney (I am NOT an attorney, but certainly know better than to wade into shark infested waters without the benefit of legal advice).

What the program does: It shields you from the legal mumbo jumbo and leads you through an interactive process of applying for a copyright. It does this using an interviewing process and assists with the completion of the following forms: PA, PA/S, TX, TX/S, VA, VA/S and Form SR, all of which are important and all of which can be completed interactively on your system. You also get Form CA for Corrections & Amplifications, and Form CON Continuation Sheet in the package.

It also gives key information from Copyright Office ciculars to assist you when filling in the form fields, and this is why your finished forms should be checked by an attorney before submission. The value of this program is that you can save many hours of expensive attorney time by doing the up-front work, which will minimize the legal costs of preparing and submitting a copyright application. As an added bonus this program also provides advice about how to use the copyright. The publisher also has specific online forms that can be used with this package that cover everything from music to architecture.

This program also covers copyrights for online works & websites, so if your copyright is in connection with e-commerce or Internet material I strongly recommend that you read CyberRegs: A Business Guide to Web Property, Privacy, and Patents by Bill Zoellick before you use the program itself. Also, if you're also interested in trademarks, you will save money by purchasing the Official Intellectual Property Suite, which bundles this program with the companion program called Official Trademark Software 1.0.

Was apparently written for Windows 3.1
This software is unbelievably bad. It appears to have been written for Windows 3.1, as it cannot deal with anything but 8.3 filenames. The Okay button for many dialogs is absolutely huge and placed behind text entry fields -- must be seen to be believed.

The installer hangs at 99% or 100% under WinXP for at least 8 minutes, then proceeds. It never exits, though, and must be killed with task manager.

I got this software bundled in the Money 2003 Suite, and paid a little extra to get it. Don't know how I'm going to get my money back for it.

Defective Product with no Intentions of Issuing a Fix
I purchased the Home and Business Attorney with the rebate deal when you buy Taxcut -- so this software will be free, ultimately . . . and boy, I'm getting what I paid for.

I contacted their tech support to report a problem with duplicate icons appearing in the upper left part of the screen (both programs), and to tell them their help topics search feature consistently returned erroneous, duplicate errors (also both programs).

First, they told me to uninstall, turn off antivirus and reinstall, and that would clear it up. When I informed them that did nothing, they told me that yes, both problems existed -- they shipped their products that way -- and would not be issuing fixes for them. See their response:

The problem of the redundant icons is not peculiar to your machine. They appear to be an artifacts left over from the development process. We were also able to reproduce the the errors when opening various Help topics, which state "Help topic does not exist". We have found that these errors do not occur when the help topics are viewed from the opening menu, where the buttons

Terrible..what a joke
What a joke. I looked up the document for "reponse to a creditor" and found a useless form that I could have created myself without the help of this waste of money software.

Dissappointed!
This is a failed attempt at a good idea. I this software was crude, and not vary flexible or scalable. It lock-up my PC on several occasions, so I finaly had to unistall it to get a little piece of mind. I much prefer Quicken or Broderbund.

Home & Business Attorney Software
The forms can not be printed with blank lines to allow users to enter information on a printed copy. Some documents are very crude and do not include any professional formatting (no headers to identify the document). This looks like Windows 3.1 software! Good Information-Poor Format
This software was not state-specific and had too many disclaimers to allow for any confidence factor in the use of it. I would return it for a money-back guarantee if I could.
