Let's get the bad news out of the way first: Complete HomeDesigner 5.0: Home Design and Renovation tends to crash--a lot! It istough to learn and has a counterintuitive interface. Intended to allow usersto explore housing designs and renovation possibilities, this packagedefinitely requires time and patience. However, users familiar with home design software will already know that many of the packages on the market fail--at least to some extent--to make it easy to create and experiment with a home. Room placement remains a chore in Complete Home Designer, certainly, but no more so than in comparable programs. In fact, those users willing to do the painstakingwork of re-creating their real-world home or designing a new one will bepleased to find several imagination-friendly features, including the meansto fine-tune irregular and L-shaped rooms and the ability to build homeswith as many as 10 floors.

unreliable and hard to use - thumb down
Do not buy. It crashed several times on a plain Dell 8600. Very hard to use, like for example to set up rooms, because (1) there are no anchor points; should be able to anchor a corner and then drag a corner; (2) we cannot lock a room in place; while editing a room, another room resized; (3) there is no alignment among rooms; rooms should align sometimes, because they may share a common wall; (4) while working with a room, we cannot specify the type of wall; and so on. It has some sexy colors and menus, but after trying to use it for several times and coming out with no results, the next step is 'uninstall'.

Complete Home Designer 5.0: Home Design & Renovation
This program is worthless, first and foremost because it will not install properly.Well, it started to install.During installation it generated a Direct-X error, but finished the install.When I clicked on the program icon it promptly uninstalled itself and removed all trace of the program from my computer.Strange.The documentation tells you to contact the company at their web site which no longer exists.Staples wont return our money because we opened the box.Microsoft says they're not responsible for problems with Microsoft Direct-X because it is OEM supported, and we should contact our computer vendor (HP) to get assistance.HP no longer supports our computer because it is out of warranty.Software companies require us to agree to EULA's, but they have no requirements to even provide us a product that works.Doesn't this all seem criminal?

This software is garbage. It's obvious that it was put together in Germany because a lot of the pop-up-type windows are in German!I can't read German.I was flying blind! If their QA process is so bad that they don't even bother to change the German to English (this is an American market after all) for basic functions, then I'm afraid to know what else is wrong.I returned it to the store where I got it because it's defective.

No support
I purchased the Data Beck Home Desing and Renovation over two weeks ago, (still not operating). I have emailed the support center to tell them the download required from their site is not loading and is a glix necessary (as they say) to operate and toplease advise.
Still nothing. As this is software and not returnable to the store. I am stuck with it....definately choose any other product than this one.
Save yourself the headaches.

Just plain bad
Installed this software hoping to visualize possible deck designs for my house. I use a brand new really powerful computer. This software crashed so much I couldn't get through the process of building a model of my home design, much less dream up new deck designs for it. ... Read more

Don't expect too much
I bought this because none of the other more expensive ones had better reviews. I didn't have that much to loose. I made a rough draft of what my "project" room looks like and what I hope it will look like. One important thing to me was to see color changes. That feature didn't really work. There were other bugs in it as well. The furniture and accesories were limited, I had to really use my imagination. Although it was a little fun, this software was not very useful to me.

Disappointed
Kit comes with two CD's (CD#1 is "3D Home Interiors", CD#2 is "Garden Problem Solver") and a hefty paperback book entitled "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Trouble-Free Home Repair." There is no printed material about the software program in the kit. The program is not highly intuitive, so most of us need to print out the 103-page User's Manual available on CD#1 before we can begin.

I've been working with the program now for about six hours, and have experienced two (2) crashes, losing significant data, despite backing up as recommended by the program. My system specs: Dell 4400 Pentium 4 at 1.7 GHz, 256MB DDR SDRAM, using MS Windows XP. On a more positive note, the floor plan feature is relatively easy to use and will be helpful in avoiding multiple furniture moves.

On the whole, I'm disappointed in this Broderbund product. The interior design elements (furnishings) seem to have been chosen at random rather than reflecting the classical pieces most decorators design around. It doesn't take a "complete idiot" to recognize that for [money] most of us are simply looking for a basic interior design program that includes pre-printed and easily referenced instructions (rather than a home repair guide and garden problem solver CD) in a 3D home design kit.

This book is so totally cool. That's not even the word for it. I bought this for my Mom,and I personally do not like her home improvment junk. But, whe I saw this it was... User friendly?Nope!
I tried to use this software over the course of a couple of months, but found it to be way too frustrating.Drawing the walls is time consuming and tedious.I would prefer a drag and drop interface for setting the basic layout.Setting camera view for walkthroughs is a royal pain in the posterior and camera movement is likewise difficult.I cannot rate the photo quality graphics as I did not have a quality graphics card at the time I owned this software. If you want a professional level program, you would be wise to look elsewhere.If you want a program to play around with, there are more user-friendly programs out there....

Not this one!
I really tried hard to make a go of this software but I kept running intoproblems.If the design is not a basic one problems soon creep in. Did what I needed
With this tool I was able to create a virtual model of my home and try out different improvements, furniture, and paint colors. This program allows me to create furniture in TurboCad (a truly great program) and easily access them. The colors in the realistic image tool are accurate enough to use for trying out paint chips on walls (scan the chips in any photo software and sample them for RGB colors). Unfortunately this image tool is Painfully slow. This program handles complex roofs and half stories very poorly. Hopefully newer versions of this software have improved some of its shortcomings (V 6.0 was released in April 2001)

Only Problems
I`m very angry about this software. Especially the Garden-Software, but also the Design-Set does not work correctly. Always Errors and break down of my PC. It is gettin' not better by using a 900 MHz-PC. All my complaints to IMSI were without results. Just wasted money !

Floorplan 3D - a struggle
I am running Floorplan 3D on windows 2000. I consider myself to be very good at windows GUI, troubleshooting PC software problems, locating information, and making things work. I really wanted to make Floorplan 3D work 'cause I think it could be great. On my 650MHz laptop w/ 256Mb memory, FP3D was very crashy. The install left a lot of loose ends - FP3D wouldnt launch from the start menu shortcut for example. I found that the FP3D UI was very basic, unevolved. I couldnt copy objects and couldnt change properties after placing them. The database kept crashing when I tried to import things from example drawings from their website. I call tech support... they said they were busy - promised to call me back, but never did. FP3D is a cool idea, you can do work with it painfully, but far from a polished product. I put about 12 hours into working the problems, and then decided that even if I became an expert, the workarounds would slow me down too much. I want to do floorplans, not work around software bugs and UI limitations. I am returning my copy for a refund.

Still searching for something better...
I have used this program for two years now and find that it can do many fun things. It does have the bugs mentioned in the other reviews, but I have found that many other home design softwares have similar bugs. You can have a "basement" in it, but only if you designate the first floor as the basement and go from there. You can add multiple levels, but it is not intuitive and took me months to figure out how to do. My biggest gripe with this software (and all the others I have tried), is that it will not allow for attic designing. Any new floor level generates a new roof line. I am still searching for a product that will allow me to convert attic space to living space. Also, it does not allow for curved stairs. I have spent hours of fun with this product and have remodeled my home many times on screen. This software remains my favorite until I can find a product that will allow me to convert my attic.

A waste of time......
We were planning on building a home so I purchased this software to help me design a basic floorplan to take to our architect. Luckily all I wanted was a basic design because that is about all you can get.

First off, when I got the software home and loaded on my PC it would even run without getting an error. I ended up waiting two months for IMSI to post a "patch" on their website that I could download to fix the error. Then after loading the patch the program would run, but every once in a while it would just crash (especially when trying to delete walls). After doing a few changes I would always have to save it so that I wouldn't lose what I had just done when it crashed.

Another bothersome thing is that you cannot print out the floor plan to a specific scale (1/8 inch = 1 foot, etc). In fact, it isn't printed to any scale that I can figure out. It all depends on the size you have it zoomed to on your screen. This was especially annoying when the architect was trying to figure out room sizes. Yes, you can print the dimensions but they are too small to read when you print the floor plan on one sheet of paper. I ended up printing out the floor plan on 6 pieces of paper so that you could read the dimensions and then having to cut and tape the 6 pieces of paper together.

The roof drawing feature was very irritating. I turned it on to see what the roof looked like. I guess my plan was too complicated because the software never could figure out what to do, even to the point where it drew one section of the roof upside down so the ceiling was pointing into the air! The worst part was that I turned the roof feature off and then deleted all of the roof that it drew, but then every once it a while it would just decide to draw the roof all over again.

Designing a house with 3D Home Architect is fun. Users can start from scratch ormodify one of dozens of included plans into a dream house. Thanks to a snappydrawing interface, scratching out a floor plan is almost as simple as sketchinga doodle in Microsoft Paint. Detail work, like laying out doors, creatingcomplex staircases, and restructuring already plotted walls, is a little moretricky, but 3D Home Architect's friendly help system supplies thoroughexplanations of even the most complex features.

3D Home Architect not only helps users lay down floor plans, but it also triesto deal with the less obvious tribulations of home building. For example, itkeeps a running spreadsheet listing the building materials required to constructa design, which can be edited as needed. It will look over a design for commoncode violations and other technical problems, but warns that it's unaware oflocal housing codes.

Having hashed out a basic floor plan, users can populate it with furniture,counters, plumbing fixtures, landscaping, and other household items through acool drag-and-drop browser. It's also possible to run electric wiring and aplumbing system, although those facets aren't quite as simple.

The program becomes clumsy when you leave the 2-D floor plan module and govertical. Some folks may wish for the simple interface of the floor planworkspace when they try to, for instance, adjust the heights of doorways,counters, and windows. And, although it allows users to see a 3-D-renderedrepresentation of a design and create walkthroughs of a house, applying colorsand textures to floors, walls, doors, furniture, and other items is tedious.

Even worse, the 3-D engine is incredibly slow, taking several seconds to rendereach frame--even on a fast PC. That's utterly inexcusable, considering thatBroderbund could have licensed a simple 3-D game engine, or even used one ofmany public domain 3-D engines capable of fluidly rendering dynamic 3-Denvironments.

Very helpful for my application
Reading over the other reviews was surprising for me because there are so many bad ones. I've installed the program on NT4, Win2KPro, and Win98. I've probably spent at least 50 hours actively using it and it never once crashed in either Win2KPro or Win98. The 3D engine crashes my NT4 box every time, but if you stay away from the 3D it works fine. It will depend upon your video driver more than anything else.

The other problems people experienced seemed to have more to do with their expectations than the product itself. I sat down with a friend who has an architecture degree (but isn't yet a licensed architect) and lots of AutoCAD experience. We tried to develop a design in AutoCAD and, of course, made lots of progress, but I couldn't have done it myself. Even with him at the helm, the going was very slow. I bought this product to try to speed the process up and put it in my own control and it performed admirably.

I think it would be very hard to design a highly detailed home with it, and there's no way it will replace an architect if you actually need the level of design an architect can provide. However, if you're designing a relatively simple home and you mostly want to work on floorplans, windows, and furniture placement, it's just the ticket. Very easy to use, maybe a little clunky here and there, but certainly functional. The 3D views are useful but nowhere near video game speed and quality.

It's not going to be very useful if you're doing something more sophisticated. It's not very useful for interior design in terms of colors and textures. The roof capabilities are very limited. But none of this was very important to me. It does the other things very well.

For the money, it was more useful than I had expected.
For the money, Better Homes & Gardens Home Designer Suite 6.0 was the best, and it could read the plans in 3D Home Architect 4.0 - which was great too, but had issues with XP - so I posted on both products. Apparently this is the upgrade to 3D Home Architect - which you can research. I recently designed my garage that I planned to look exactly like my house, complete with Cultured Stone from their library. All I had to do was draw the walls, install windows, cabinets, doorways, and it automatically built the foundation with the slab. Then the hard part - show my wife in 3D what I was doing, and I had to cut it back in size. I was able to print the plans, and get my building permit with very little work, and probably saved myself a lot money and time, and it was more useful than I had expected.

great program but won't run on XP
I love the 3D Home Architect 4.0 . I have purchased 2 Punch programs also, they are impossible to use. the 3D Home Architect 4.0 is simple and beautiful. the only problem I have run into is: I just purchaed a new computer with WindowsXP and the 3D Home Architect 4.0 will not install. I have heard that the upgrade to 3D Home Architect 4.0 is not good. any suggestions?

For the money it is unbeatable
For the money this 3D Home Architect 4.0 can't be beat. You can easily build walls, install windows, cabinets, fixtures, doorways, etc. The impressive thing is that if you want to resize something, like a wall, it displays in a revolving manner the actual wall dimension. The full camera enables you to click on a spot and get a full view of what your design looks like in its completion. The amount of detail, like being able to put paintings on the wall, or custom effect painting is not an option. As you go up the chain of Broderbund software you gain a lot more in the way of small details. That gives you a more finished look, rather than a comic book level of realization. If you are a design professional, and need to show customers a print out of what their new design for the kitchen will look like, this is great for that. Placing cabinets, refrigerator, windows and doors, tables and chairs, windows etc, are easy to place and move around. As far as minute accuracies of wall and cabinet sizes, you gain more precision as you move up the versions. In Better Homes and Gardens version, which is a spin off of the same people who give us Chief Architect, you get more specifics.
Starting with Home Architect 4.0, then up to Better Homes and Gardens Designer Suite 6 for twice the money, and Designer Pro 6 for ten times the money, and finally Chief Architect 9.5 for twenty times the money. (These prices can vary during the life of this review, so check the product pages for current prices) Each of these programs give you more and more details. They are all usable in the upgraded program. Since they are all made by the same people, you can open a cheaper versions creation and embellish it with the additional tools. Their is some confusion over 3D Home Architect 5.0 not being compatible with 4.0 even though it is a Broderbund Product and therefore uses different tools, and is not usable for existing works in the Broderbund family. If you go to the listing on Architect 5.0 you can read a review explaining that further.

If you buy Chief Architect Deluxe 9.5 from Broderbund you get very exacting software. In Chief you can size a wall as specifically as you want, and do the same with cabinets windows etc. By double clicking on a wall for example, up comes a window and you can type in a very specific dimension like 17' 8 3/16", and it will automatically size the wall to that dimension. In 4.0 you can only resize the wall in 1" increments, and cabinets in 3" increments.
These versions come with a library of different styles of furniture, windows etc. The Chief Architect even carries specific models of some popular manufacturers with their specific dimensions. Jeld Wen windows are an example of that. (Andersen and Pella are not included??)
In Chief you getter higher quality 3D models....
With Chief you get full CAD editing and too many features than would be advisable to list in a review of 4.0. If you would like to try a free demo version of Chief Architect Deluxe 9.5, you can do so by downloading it from the Chief Architect site. It is 17 megabytes so if you are using 56K it will take quite some time. The demo version is a full version with certain limitations, not the least of which is being able to save your work or print it. In addition the libraries are limited.
Overall I like the program, the learning curve is enjoyable due to being able to just click on build, choose a wall, a cabinet, window etc, and lay it out on the screen.
All in all I highly recommend the program.. For the money, 4.0 is unbeatable.

Least of all evils I guess
Has some powerful features, but not a very quality product. Don't expect the quality that is in most microsoft products we use every day. For instance:
- a help index that had all the necessary key words
- an index in the manual that is worthwhile
- Nonspecific error codes that persistently appear leaving you to guess what is causing them
- no keyboard shortcuts (esp for critical items like zoom, etc.)
- all kinds of little bugs here & there
- no implementation of mouse wheel, etc.

For floor planning only I'd recommend Visio 2003 - a realy quality product with all the dimensioning you really need.

It's a pity to see them put this much effort into a product, and then shoot themselves in the foot with sooo many little shortcomings. ... Read more

For a start you get error messages in German
This is possibly the worst piece of software I have ever bought ! give you a clue you set in the size of your apartment then add a room which is then larger than the whole floorplan don't be fooled by the headlines it's 100% useless oh sorry it has one use ....... raising your blood pressure

Disappointing Product
My wife thought it would be a nifty way to lay-out furniture for a new house but it turned into hours of frustration. It's cumbersome, quirky and not well documented. It comes with a number of sample designs that look quite good which made it all the more more frustrating.

At 62 years, I don't figure to live long enough to learn to use it effectivly, especially when you have to tease out many operations by trial & error. We didn't expect too much for $29 and I guess got what we paid for. ... Read more

somewhat outdated and lite on features..
This is software from year 2000, and while there are not many inexpensive options for Mac users for CAD type programs ( and this might be one of the few options available).. It will make you cry if you see the PC bargain bin software like "3D Home Architect Deluxe 3" by Broderbund.. it's les than tenbucks and has ten times the power and features of 123 home design... When I want to do CAD type work is the only time I would really like to have a MS PC system..

Good features but lack of items to finish a home design
I consider it a good software considering its price. Easy to use and with a good graphic presentation, one of the few programs of this kind as far as I know.It works okay for entretainment, and you can design a preliminary idea of what you want of your home, but I consider that it doesn't have enough items like furniture or other home articles to complete any idea of room furniture distribution. I think that it is important that it doesn't include any plants or trees for indoor or outdoor decoration and neither lightning and you cannot put any roof only flat cealings. So it is difficult to imagine your finish house if it roofs are not flat especially from the outside.

Another software like this is DesignWorkshop Lite, where you are much more free to design anything you can imagine, but needs much more knowledge of the program and of 3D image manipulation. ... Read more

Try something else
This program isn't too bad for drawing floor plans - as long as it stays running without crashing long enough to get something done. This program crashed a lot on my computer (500mhz athlon w/ 256MB memory and Win 98se) The color chip selection is a joke with only a couple dozen colors. Stairways have to be made in their funiture creation tool (a nightmare). I didn't waist any time replacing this program with something else. Get a program that you can specify RGB colors for walls, a real staircase tool, and doesn't crash every 10 minutes.

Spend your money on the project, not this product
I purchased this product with two goals in mind: to work out a bathroom remodel, and to plan a kitchen redesign. In the furniture section, there is one toilet and no double sink. In the kitchen, there are no sinks shown at all!! This is a joke. What furniture there is tends to "load" onto the page at funny angles rather than 45 degree angles so that it would fit in a square room. The developer is very fond of CD racks, though (the library furniture collection has more of these than anything else). Like another reviewer said, the walk through and 3-d is a neat feature (once you figure out how the heck to use it). But who wants to do a walk through of an empty box??????? Old fashioned graph paper and a pencil would do you much better.

Socked in the Eye
I can't believe what I paid for this .... For starters, the graphics were horrible, the so-called textures and fabrics even worse. Just maneuvering in this thing was a vertigo-ridden nightmare. You'd think a bunch of pre-kindergarteners conspired and put this thing together. On second thought, I think they'd have done a lot better. Then again, the brand name says it all--if you buy this thing you're surely gonna take a PUNCH!

I was robbed!
Gasp! If this is an award-winning example of home design software, I'll bet you can't hang the award! The product box promises "thousands of texture and pattern combinations". The truth is closer to a dozen or so drab or gaudy patterns and colors which are not combinable. The furnishings are tiny on the toolbar and barely recognizable in full size. It is not easy to change the texture of wooden furnishings or floors. Using the furniture workshop requires a degree in engineering. The landscape feature has a small variety of plants, and they only come in one size. What I liked: walk-thru, LiveView, and moving with ease both indoors and out.
