However, I would like to point out to potential buyers that its manufacturer "The Learning Company" has recently discontinued this software. They've decided to only sell Family Tree Maker instead of offering both programs. So buyers should think very carefully if they want to buy arguably one of the best programs on the market knowing support will probably be very limited if not nonexistant in the future. ... Clipart is very limited and there is no way to import your own clipart unless you copy/paste from another program. Same with backgrounds, very limited ... no way of importing your own collection to use. I expected that their site would have heaps more templates and goodies to download and they have SOME stuff but it is nothing to write home about and the file sizes are huge for just a handful of add-ons. I don't mind using it but I find it very fiddly and dicky when it comes to completing the most basic task such as making something transparent or just creating an everyday shape like a triangle. I'd really like to be able to get my hands on some more templates but just can't seem to find any apart from the limited addition on their site. Michelle

Amazon.com Review Family Tree Maker Deluxe comes with a vast collection of information, from family histories to Social Security birth and death records. The information is on a series of CD-ROMs, and if any criticism can be made of this program, it is that it needs to go to DVD in the worst way, because the endless switching of these archive CDs can become tiresome indeed. Even so, the program's integrated search function sifts quickly and thoroughly through the data and comes up with matches rapidly. Research is only half of the genealogical researcher's task, however. Once you have all the data in hand, the largest challenge remains: making sense of it. Fortunately, Family Tree Maker Deluxe makes this easy, too, with graphs, beautifully laid out charts of all types, and even HTML versions of family trees that are easy to create and manage. Family anecdotes and old photographs can be attached to entries, giving the charts an immensely personalized touch. Family Tree Maker also provides links to professional printers who specialize in genealogical displays. The raw power of this software--not to mention its overall no muss, no fuss approach--is certain to appeal to new researchers and experts alike. --Alyx Dellamonica Reviews (2)
The problem with Family Tree Maker Deluxe is the extra CDs which are included with the basic program. I found the extra CDs to be absolutely worthless. There is nothing on the box outlining in detail what you'll find on the CDs, so let me give you an idea. 4 of the CDs are a "Family Finder Index" which include millions of names, some of which are sketchy at best and include a lot of ??? instead of full names and dates. You may find the names of many of your ancestors here, but if you click on the name to see what additional information is available and if this is really your ancestor, you aren't given any information about the person. You are instead given an advertisement to purchase yet more CDs or an online subscription. This seems to be the typical response for most of the "research" associated with this software. 2 of the CDs contain the Social Security Death Index from 1937-1999, all of which can be looked up online for no cost. 1 CD is "Family History: Mid-Atlantic Genealogies" and contains information on the following families: Condit, Dill, Dodge, Douglas, Dutton, Emerick, Emmons, Mott, and Schell. 1 CD is "Local and Family Histories: New England" and contains the following information: Descendents of Thomas Dickinson; History of the Dudley Family; The Eaton Family of Nova Scotia; and the History of the town of Bristol, New Hampshire. 1 CD contains Military Records of US Soldiers from 1784-1811. You are also given one-month access to Genealogy.com's World Family Tree collection, which lets you view the family trees of other people who have purchased the software and posted their family trees, unless they have marked the information "private." I found this feature to be practically worthless, as the format for viewing the online trees was confusing and difficult to navigate. You are also given access to Genalogy.com's search engine, but again, if you run across any matches for the names you're researching, you're told to purchase more CDs or an online subscription, many of which were quite costly. Genealogy.com does have many census records available, but each decade is a separate CD, and buying all of them would be a ridiculous expense. I'd suggest skipping this particular version of Family Tree Maker altogether and either purchasing the basic no-extra CDs version of Family Tree Maker or using another genealogy program entirely.

Amazon.com Review As its name indicates, this program is intended as a tool rather than as a standalone. Family Tree Super Tools imports family trees already created using packages like The Master Genealogist and Family Origins, allowing users to analyze their data and create new displays. As a result, this program focuses less on the often-backbreaking work of researching a family history and more on data cleanup and snazzy output. The package has dozens of options for presenting and analyzing the gathered data: filters, searches, chart customization options, and much more. Charts can be saved directly to JPG format for easy insertion into Web pages. Comments, photos, and important historical events can be incorporated into the output, providing a larger perspective on a family story. The information can be streamlined just as easily, reduced to its essentials and presented in a compact fashion. What's more, the program installs smoothly, is easy to use, and makes good on its promise of wide compatibility, integrating family databases from various sources with nary a complaint. For advanced users of genealogy software who want to tinker with the look and structure of an established family database, Family Tree Super Tools is a distinctly first-rate choice. --Alyx Dellamonica Reviews (5)
Wholly Genes works hard to please their customers and this program, like their others, is a worthwile addition to your ancestor research tools.
Analysis tools include side-by-side display, filters, color coding using a variety of user-defined criteria, and Internet searches. You can compare names, dates, facts, and sources from different databases. Or you can search your own data for people in specific places or times to look for connections. Just being able to color-code people who are ancestors of a given person, lived in a given town or state, or the like, turns the display itself into an analysis tool. As for output, my favorite is the variety of highly customizable "box charts" - Ancestor charts, Descendant charts, Fan charts, and more, each with seemingly endless numbers of options. And once the chart is generated, you can edit it further, moving, adding, or deleting elements, to get just what you want. You can print them on your own printer, or send them to the Company's printing service for beautiful wall-size charts at reasonable cost. I've had some done for my own walls, and given them as gifts to family members. They loved them! Multi-media isn't my thing, but if it's yours, you can create "slideshows" with photos, sounds, and other media which you can display or send to others. The media files can be either in your genealogy data or elsewhere on your computer. All in all, a very useful tool at a reasonable price.
My main use of this program is as a gift to some of my relatives and friends who don't use The Master Genealogist (TMG). This way they can read my data from TMG and compare it with their data from another program. A number of them have switched permanently to TMG which has even more capability than Family Tree SuperTools. But all have said they like this program. As for Customer SERVICE, I got it when I called the vendor for help. One relative happend to ask a question on the RootsWeb mailing list for Family Tree SuperTools and they received a phone call within an hour. Of course, not everyone will get service like that, but it impressed me.
If you own The Master Genealogist you have the best tool to set up data to be used by SuperTools, but it handles GEDCOM as well as native formats of so many different genealogy programs! The screens are highly customizable and then you can save the layouts. This saves time when you want to see different windows with different types of projects. Other tools include a master place list, relationship calculator, and date calculator. The master place list alone has greatly assisted me in cleaning up the place names in my database! You still have trouble remembering what 6th cousin 2 times removed means? Then use the relationship calculator on any two people in the database and let it do the tree climbing. The date calculator is always handy to figure out the birth date from the tombstone or obituary that says age: 21 years 6 months and 2 days. If the above wasn't enough to entice you into buying SuperTools, then add in a handy way to search 5 websites for a group of names. Build a focus group and then click on the menu entry 'Web', you will pop-up a window per site per name. The sites searched are FamilySearch.org, Ancesty.com, Gendex.com, Rootsweb.com and genealogyportal.com. The only negative about these searches is that it's easy to get carried away with the list of names and before you know it, you have a screen full of windows to examine. In such a short time, you can generate so much to look at that you will be busy for a long while. Family Tree SuperTools is a tremendous value from the genealogy software company that is the benchmark of the industry! Jeri Steele ... Read more | |

Amazon.com Review It is important to note that this Gold Edition of The Master Genealogist is a reissue of a 1999 package. In computer terms, thismakes the program rather elderly. Though this version has some Web-friendlyfeatures added into its mix, it is prone to glitches, particularly duringinstallation. Its interface is on the clunky side and may frustrate userswho are still learning the ins and outs of Windows. A lengthy examinationof the manual is a must for learning to use anything but the simplestTMG features. On the other hand, this program will run on a very modestcomputer system, and its reports are well worth examining. Well laid outand easy to read, they are the centerpiece of a hard-working tool designedto change your family lore from a pile of clippings and photographs to acoherent--and intriguing--story. --Alyx Dellamonica Reviews (9)
I can certainly see the potential for TMG to be vastly superior to any other product in the genre, but at the end of the day, I will always favour a succinct and unencumbered design. Configuration: version 5.11; Windows XP; P4 2.6GHz; 1GB RAM.
I bought this program because they offered so much information. They have a detailed website and downloadable demo. Family Tree Maker has done neither of these things to gain my business. TMG's download makes the program look straightforward, but TMG is nothing like that demo. The demo is based on an outdated and completely different version, and to be still handing this out seems like a dishonest business practice to me. Let me try to take you inside TMG 5.04. Imagine that you are entering a new piece of information for your ancestor and would like to enter a new resource. You'd like to click on the "new resource" button, and then see a Resource Manager appear. One could imagine this Resource Manager having a scrolling pane along the left to choose the type of resource (census, photo, book, newspaper) while the main part would have the appropriate data entry boxes (title, author, date, repository, etc.). Perhaps at the top there could be a pane showing a preview of how this source would appear in a bibliography. If one wanted to add extras, each data entry box could have a "comments" or "annotation" button next to it, or the data entry boxes could even have up and down arrows that could change the order in which that item would appear in the bibliographical entry. Nothing is this easy in TMG. There is no "new source" button. Clicking on the "add" citations doesn't take you to the sources. Instead, TMG takes you first to a separate popup for comments - really a peripheral item. However, even if awkward, the resource management fulfills its promise - it's meticulous. The reporting capabilities of TMG, on the other hand, are a downright cheat. The wizard seen in the demo is not actually on TMG. The varieties of descendancy charts seen on the demo are not available on TMG. A "Register" report - probably the most popular style of written genealogy - is not available on TMG. Essentially, there are only two genealogical reports: a ancestry (Anhentafel) report, and a descendancy report. And other reports? Just try printing the sources. You probably think that you could open that popup window containing the list of sources and there would be a button labeled "Print" or "Generate Report". No such luck. So you try the word "report" on the toolbar at the top, and indeed "bibliography" appears on the dropdown menu. You can select the file folder in which you want to generate this report on the popup window. Then you click "Save" and go look for your file. Nothing there. No report has been generated. Somehow, though, you have this hunch that in a program this big there must be a way to print out all your sources... but where? How? The options menu says that certain options are only available with word processing, but where do you set one up? Some say that this "has a steep learning curve" - which insinuates that it's your fault you can't use this clumsy thing. But consider: There is an Internet bulletin board dedicated to people trying to figure this out... My experience leads me to suspect that this awkwardly designed product remains viable only because it has no genuine competition. Some people buy a car because they like to tinker with it; I have a car because I have places to go. Some people like TMG, I guess because they like to fiddle with a program. I, however, have genealogy to do.
