Limited Functionality Disappointing
Ok. So I don't know too much about wine, but I was hoping that this little piece of software might help me. And I have to say that is does have basic information, but there are some glaring things that could have been done to make this program a whole lot better. First, I have the 2004 version, and the white wines I've been buying are mostly 2002 vintage, but the database is VERY limited on 2002 information. Secondly, the software has a personal "cellar" where you can keep your own information, and a wine database of all wines, but it didn't occur to the programmers that it might be useful to connect these two databases to each other. This means that if you want to add wines to your cellar, you have to manually enter all the information, instead of just selecting the wine from their database. It also means if you want to see what the rating is for one of your wines, you have to search for it separately in the other database. Third, the search capability has bugs. Search for a Riesling and it doesn't return all of them. Finally, the "Classic Wine Pairings" is very limited. Doesn't even listed Chardonnay. (Or maybe Chardonnay goes with everything???) In short, this piece of software underperforms for the price.

Not great.
Although it lists many wines, it also is missing many common wines. You must have more memory than a PalmIII to install the program on your palm, and if you are using a AAA powered Palm, it drains them during hotsync. My favorite feature is the listinf of vintages and which years are good to drink.

A must! (if you love wines and own a Palm)
I hardly give a product 5 stars. This case, it surely deserves it. I mean, come on, do you remember the wine ratings for each region by year? What about peak ratings? Haven't you ever drank a wine and found out later it was two years away from peak maturity?

If you do care for these things (and you must if you ever spend more ...bucks for a bottle) you owe yourself to get a copy of this program ...

One of the most useful items it the ability to add a wine to your cellar either manually or from the excellent wine reviews (Summer 2002 included.)

Add this to your Zagat Restaurant Guide for PDAs and people will be calling you to dine out... Wish they'll come up with a PocketPC version soon.

Bogus Reviews!
This is a great product...so good that I think the competitors are writing bogus reviews. Two of the reviews here start with "Sometimes I like this product and sometimes it really makes me frustrated." They say one positive thing (to make it sound legitimate) and then spend the rest of the time criticizing the product.

The truth is, it's a great piece of software...and it's difficult to compete with a quality product valued at[sold price].

A love/hate relationship to this product
Sometimes I like this product and sometimes it really makes me frustrated. I don't like the idea that you can't save recipes that you enter onto hard disk. Other than that I really don't have too much of a problem with this program. I mostly use it to enter my own recipes. We had major computer problems and because my recipes were not saved to hard disk i lost all of them. It was very upsetting. Now I have to re-enter everything and again I am faced with the dilemma of not being able to save them on disk. I am thinking of buying Master Cook and using that instead.

Fantastic!
I was somewhat reluctant to try this considering the mediocre review that I read about it. I'm glad I gave it a shot because it is FANTASTIC! I found Cook'n to be most delightful!

In my opinion, the shopping list is just fine. It lists all of the ingredients (corn, beans, etc.) and some additional brand information that I just disregard. It combined every occurence of butter, salt, sugar, etc. in my recipes. The menu planning feature is more powerful than the other software products I've seen. It let's you combine recipes and food items to make a menu for one day, one week, one month, two months...etc. It's very flexible. I can see my whole menu at a glance.

I came to expect all of those features but what I didn't expect was the ability to download my shopping list to my Palm Pilot! Wow! It gave me an estimate of the total cost for my shopping trip. It organized my shopping list by aisle to make it easy to shop. It analyzed the nutritional value of my menu based on the nutritional information right off the label of the can! Unbelievable!

To my surprise, the package included a top of the line OXO cheese grater, a pack of 30 decorative 3x5 recipe cards, and a magnetic recipe card holder. Not to mention 3 CD's with delicious recipes already installed. Video clips, full-color photos,...the ability to enter my own recipes, adjust serving sizes, e-mail recipes to friends, download recipes to my Palm Pilot, etc. etc.

I'm SOOO glad I got Cook'n. I highly recommend it. It's a great value and, in my opinion, the best out there.

This is a Love/Hate Relationship
Sometimes I really LIKE this program and other times I'm really FRUSTRATED with it and wish I'd bought something else! It took me more than a few hours to even udertand how to use it as it has no users guide. Once I did learn it seems pretty easy. The recipes are OKAY, I guess, I've mostly added my own and used them. My biggest complaints are that 1.)You can't print out a concise, organized shopping list -- only one that is pages long with suggestions on where I should shop and what brands to buy (instead of it saying Corn it says Libby's Corn or whatever). 2.)It doesn't combine amounts of like items (it'll say 8 oz. cream cheese then further down the list 3 oz. cream cheese then perhaps 4 more oz. later in list -- why can't it just total up the amount needed and list 15 oz. cream cheese?) 3.The menu plan does not print in a calendar form look AND 4.) instead of it showing each item we're having for dinner it lists the name of a "meal". If I don't remember what is included in that "meal" I have to insert the CD and boot up the program to find out, which is really annoying and a time waster! I'm thinking of selling it on Ebay and buying Master Cook. ... Read more

This is the COOLEST software!
I had low expectations for this software so exceeding them wasn't too hard. However, this blew me away! The PC component is very powerful and makes it easy to download recipes to your Palm.

I downloaded 500 recipes to my Palm. Now when I'm in the kitchen wondering what to make for dinner, I just enter the ingredients I have on hand and the software gives me ideas of what I can make. It's nice to have the recipes at my fingertips in the kitchen.

Do Not Waste Your Money
I received this as a gift and upon trying to install it found that:

1. It will only install and run on Windows XP when set to run in Windows98/ME compatibility mode.

2. The title, although still for sale is no longer supported by the publisher and the online content (reviews) are no longer accessible. i.e. web links are broken.

3. While the database of older wines still works, the software is archaic and functions poorly.

The publisher of this software really needs to remove it from distribution, what a rip-off!!!!

no web based browsing
The Gold Edition Wines of the World came out of the package and loaded in like a dream after we changed the compatability to run on a top of the line operating system. The information that was loaded in was great and presented very slickly even without Shockwave. When it came time to set up the web browser is when things got interesting. Trying to get the browser to work took over and hour. When it finally did work the web site for the software was nonexistant. So we called the tech support 1-800 number to get a little help. Imagine our surprise to be directed to an adult phoneline. Oh Boy. So we called long distance to the company to get a little help. No luck everyone was out for the holidays and would not be back until the new year (wish my employer had this type of setup). Since this was a gift we ended up looking like total shmoes and took the gift back with promises to find something else. We have since decided to keep the software ourselves as we cannot return it. We currently are in contact with the company that produces it to find an amicable solution to get this software to work. Super!!
I got this thinking I might get a few holiday recipe ideas and, to my surprise, I discovered hundreds of delicious holiday dishes!

I had no idea that I was getting such a powerful software tool with it. I didn't think I'd ever want to organize my recipes on the computer but I figured that since the software had the feature I would try putting a recipe or two into it...75 recipes later I'm still going strong! What a special treat!

I haven't even gotten into a lot of the other features yet; like the Palm Pilot and e-mailing recipes, etc. But I know one thing: Cook'n is the best tool to manage your favorite recipes. ... Read more

I love this software
Cook'n for Vegetarians comes with tons of Vegetarian recipes that are delicious, and such a variety. The software is perfect for entering your own recipes. And for those of us who are watching our weight too, you can enter your own nutritional information for any lite ingredient and the software will automatically compute the recipe's nutritional value for you. Also, I host parties for my family often and it's so easy to change the number of people you'd like to serve and the program automatically changes the ingredient amounts for you! I've added more recipe cookbook titles to my collection since and loved them all. You can download the cookbooks once you have the software from [local website]. I give it 5 stars!

Not for vegetarians; clunky, non-intuitive interface
I was looking forward to a product aimed at vegetarians. Somehow, a food listing that includes bacon bits, bacon drippings, and anchovies is missing the point (so far I've only gotten to the B's in deleting non-vegetarian ingredients and recipes). Some people confusedly think eating chicken or fish qualifies them as a vegetarian, so maybe that is the audience this program seeks (although that still doesn't explain the bacon). Earlier I posted my inability to customize nutrition information. A quick response from support showed me how...the information was not located in the manual and was not at all intuitive (and I work in computers all day every day).

Great variety--Excellent!
It's not easy finding good vegetarian recipes. That's why I was excited to find that someone had compiled a CD full of them. The variety on this CD is AMAZING! I was surprised to see that I could organize not only my own recipes but even the ones that came pre-programmed in the software. Whenever I find a really good recipe on the CD, I put it in my own category so I can use it again later.

I'm not very computer literate but this CD was a snap to use. I just popped it in my CD drive and away I went. I highly recommend it.

Not worth the money
Unless you need directions for how to make mini-pizzas out of a slice of bread, sauce, and cheese, you'll be better off with another program. Not easy to navigate around, either. ... Read more

Still the Best Program of it's Kind!
With this program you will be able to track all of your daily food intake and then analyze it to see quantity of calories, fat, protein, carbs, fiber, etc.. you ingest per item, meal, day, week, and so on. You can also keep track of exercise and figure out how many calories you've burned. On the graphs tab, you can view and print calories in vs. calories out, track and graph your weight, all your body measurements (waist, thighs, chest, etc..), clothes size, maximum and resting heart rate, sporting distance, endurance, body fat percentage, blood pressure, detailed blood chemistry, moods, sleep habits, emotional and spiritual well-being, sex drive, you name it! You can track and graph most anything health related by defining your own graphs!

It's very easy to use and you can make it as detailed as you like, it's your choice. If all you want to do is make sure you are consuming less calories than you burn each day (and therefore losing weight) or make sure your dietary proportions are in check (sodium, cholesterol, etc.), it's a breeze. But for those who want to monitor health conditions, document hospital/doctor appointments, test results, track exercise details, heck, even compare how your golf score is effecting your anxiety level it's all there.

The interface is top notch, easy to maneuver, and the help screens are thorough and well documented. Yes, the fast food/convenience food database is a little outdated, but all the basic foods are there, and any new info needed is easily taken from a package label or fast food website, entered in, and made a permanent part of the program. Works the same with your own recipes too... How hard is that?

To sum it up, I am very pleased with this wonderful product! Life Form really helps me to keep not only my weight under control, but my health in check too. Before Life Form, I never knew just how many fat calories were "sneaking" their way into my diet! The pie graph on the food tab gives a great visual on this, it lets you "see" exactly what you are putting into your body. Great awareness tool!

A very useful and flexible program
I've been a user of LifeForm since early 1997, and haven't once considered replacing it with another program. Besides tracking almost anything you can think of, it allows you to add items to monitor. For example, if you've been tracking your blood pressure and want to compare that to your mood swings, you can track your mood for a while and then create a graph to compare the two and see if there's a correlation.

Compared to other programs, it is fast and easy to track your eating habits. It will retrieve a food item based on any part of the name of the food, while some others cannot "find" the food unless you get the exact spelling and order of words.

The calorie estimates for recipes you add are also very accurate. Another program I've used--MasterCook--has sometimes been off by as much as 50 percent.

The best thing about this program is that it can be as simple or as complicated as you want. If you want to track every blood chemical, mood, or doctor's appoinment, you can. But if you're looking for something to just tell you how many calories you ate today, it will do a fast and accurate job--and not give you an annoying pop-up reminder to do something else.

Most Useful
This program works. Be sure you are the type of person that is around a computer all day and it will work for you too. I have been using Life Form for over a year and still feel like I want to use it.

Life Form tracks your food, weight, exercise, and much more. It has useful graphs to track your progess and organized tables that you can customize to your own needs.

Previous reviews are true in saying the program needs to be updated, but you can enter nutritional information from any food label you have.

I strongly recommend this program to anyone trying to eat healthy and lose weight.

Haven't found a Better Product
This is a wonderful tool. It offers an exceptional food diary, exercise journal (calculating the calories according to heartrate or level of exertion), a graphing section (compare calories burned to target calories burned), etc. A section to track stress levels, fatigue, anxiety etc almost anything you would care to track.

Its true that the food database could use an update but it is still it pretty comprehensive. If you can't find a food you can put it in (using the labeling information on the product). Or you can input your own recipes.

I have looked long and hard for a really good product to help with weight loss and this is the best I've found. It has many other uses as mentioned in another review (diabetes management etc). I can't reccommend it enough.

Needs Updating
This is a brilliantly implemented tool for tracking and analyzing the various aspects of your health. emptysee's review expains these features well. A significant consideration: the program has not been updated since it's 1995 release. Although the interface is exceptional for a Windows 3.1 program, it could be polished to take advantage of Windows 95/98 capabilities. The food database is badly out of date - so much so that I find myself regularly having to enter new foods. Life Form does all the things it claims, has an excellent and thorough manual, and is highly customizable. I just wish the authors would polish it up and bring it up to date! ... Read more

High quality product
I installed this on my computer and my wife's laptop without a problem. Both machines have Windows XP on them and everything works great.

I've tried others but I like Cook'n best. I highly recommend it.

Works on Windows 98 but no dice on XP
The program worked fine when I installed it on a Dell computer with Windows 98. Soon after, I got a new Dell with Windows XP and have not been able to get the program to work. It keeps locking up. I emailed DVO for assistance but have not received an answer.
If you order this program, keep your receipts - you may need to send it back!

STINKS FOR TYPE 2 DIABETICS!!
I bought this software because it advertised that Cook'n for Diabetics is included. I couldn't wait to get it. When I loaded it, the only menus for diabetics were for children with juvenile diabetes. HUGE DIFFERENCE! So I was left to sort and sift through the recipes, just like I did before I had the software. So then I read the disk. It says "this disk contains recipes from Cook'n blah blah blah....." so you aren't even getting the full version of the cookbooks they advertise you to be getting, just excerpts. The nerve! What a waste of time, postage, and disk space. I guess I will be taking advantage of the 30-day money back guarantee, which is the only thing I like about this product.

Loved it!
I found the Organizer feature of Cook N Collection to be great. I wanted a simple but powerful way to electronically organize & store my family ecipes, which I can now do. Recipes are so easy to enter, I did about 100 in 10 hours. A Drop down list of measures and ingredients allows speed typing. Free form text fields are very flexible to elaborate on ingredients. Option exists to select & display within recipe a "preferred brand" for any ingredient. Easy to link or imbed one recipe within another (frosting to cake) and copy recipe into multiple categories (lasagna is a main dish and also a pasta dish). Once recipe is entered, program calculates nutritional information. Allows you to combine multiple recipes together into "meals" to do full range of menu planning and preparation of grocery list. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans is published every 5 years by the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Agriculture (USDA). The Guidelines provide authoritative advice for Americans about how good dietary habits can promote health and reduce risk for major chronic diseases. The 2005 edition of the Guidelines was released on January 12, 2005.
