I have concerns with this company & this product
Sierra sold the MasterCook line to ValuSoftware a few years ago, a company with questionable practices based on all the internet research I've done on cooking software in the last couple of days. I want to upgrade from my 3.5" disk of MasterCook II 2.7 version from 1993.

All I've read indicates that if you decide to go with MasterCook, you're better off springing for the two bills more and getting MasterCook Deluxe, not the LowCarb version of it. Deluxe has everything that LowCarb has (except 11 recipes that are only in LowCarb), plus thousands of regular recipes, should you ever need one. You can filter Deluxe to return just the Low Carb recipes results. It appears the LowCarb product was a fast remarketing ploy by ValuSoft to make some quick bucks on current trends, without hardly doing anything but filtering existing software.

I've also read on the internet that ValuSoft tends to buy up software, sell it cheap, sell it only until the sales decline, then abandons the product. It doesn't sound like much is ever done for future enhancements. Not good, if it's true.

Of significant note for me as a low carber of over 5 years, before it got trendy, is that the MasterCook line doesn't break out sugars from the carb nutritional analysis reporting.

I'm strongly considering "Living Cookbook" instead, a much newer program, but with some really active development going on, and easy communication with the actual software developer. There's an online demo I checked out, a free 25-use trial, and continual updates for no extra fee (even entire whole number version updates). It reports carbs, net carbs (and sugar, sugar alcohol and fiber). It looks pretty attractive to me.

Alternatively, there's another line you might look at ... Cook'n, which offers a low carb version that's probably better than what MasterCook has to offer.

MasterCook has a huge following, but I don't know that it can be sustained now that it's under the control of ValuSoft ... or if it will be around for long. ... Read more

Gourmet Cooking Suite
I wish I had seen the previous reviews before I bought this product. If I had I never would have made the purchase. I am using Windows Me and can access the cookbook section of the program but the diet and fitness CD does not install properly.
I have not tried the labels CD since I have other software that can create labels if I need them. I DO NOT recommend this software.

This program sounds very good on the cover. When you open it, there are several programs, which make you feel as if you get alot for your money. However, there are serious flaws in the exercise/diet program. There is difficulty saving material. It often will shut down just as you are planning your menus. It may be a deal at 10 dollars, but not the 20 dollars originally asked.

Software Looks Old
I recently purcahsed this item and it is [not worth much]. It looks old, like the windows programs of the early 90's. It has a limited amount of recipes and the overall use of its other futures are very basic. Try one of the other recipe software items. It has got to be better than this.

If only the program was as good as the box it came in.
The software is not up to par with many other computer based cook books, lacking both content and usefullness. The fitness portion of the program is about as usefull as a small pamphlet on health, but not as easy to use. To sum up this part of the software "before you do anything check with your doctor" (and while you're there pick up a health and fitness pamphlet, you will not need to buy the software then). The lable maker portion works, and one may find a use for this, but again for what you pay for the software you could buy a lot of stickers at the dime store. To put it in a nutshell, walking is good for your health, and you should keep walking when you see this program (at least pick up your pace while passing it on the shelf). ... Read more

Well Done
I hope that one day I'll have time to tinker around in the kitchen preparing a nice dinner but the reality is that I'm just too busy to do that now.

Coming to that realization was the first step for me. The next step was accepting it and getting this software. I'm so glad I did because now I have a selection of tasty, healthy recipes that can be prepare in a moments notice with food that I have on hand.

Sizzlin!
I love to barbecue but I finally got tired of the same thing every time. When I ran across this CD, I thought I'd give it a try. I had pretty low expectations but BOY am I pleased! I'm pretty happy...
I was going to buy some blank white Avery 3x5 cards to print recipes on but I did a little digging and found this product. I was reluctant to buy it because of the other review I read but I gave it a try and I'm so glad I did!

The cards work great! My recipes look so much better on these cards than they would have on the blank white Avery cards. And, these are less expensive than the plain white cards too!

Some of the perforations could have been cut better but over-all I'm pretty darn happy about this purchase! I'm very glad I went with these cards instead of the plain white ones.

I highly recommend this product.

Waste of money.
I also thought I'd be able to "create my own recipe library" just like it says on the box. You can only enter ten recipes since this is not a "fully functional version." All you're really getting are pretty recipe cards. Since there's no print preview function, you have to print long recipes first on blank paper to see if you need to adjust the fonts to get it on one page. I think it's a total waste of money.

Great Idea!
What a clever idea! I really like the colorful designs on these cards. They enhance my recipes and make it more fun. And, these cards are less expensive than the blank white Avery cards. These don't tear at the perforations as easily as the Avery cards--I had to fold them first--I think they could do a better job at that. But, the magnetic recipe card holder is GREAT! I love it!

Best Christmas Gift
I wanted to give a personalized Christmas gift this year but I couldn't think of anything...until I ran across these cards. I love to cook and have some delicious recipes. I have been entering them into the computer and printing them on these neat cards. They look so cool! I am SO EXCITED!! I can't wait to give them to my family and friends. I came back to order another pack so I thought I'd write a quick review. For what it's worth...I love these cards!!

Poor Program
The program is not user friendly at all. The logs to track body fat %, muscle mass, etc. are not included in the program as advertised. The Encore support site appologizes for the glitch in the logs but offers no reslotuion to the problem. I reccomend staying away from this program!

At least it's a nice box!
It seems that Encore spent more time and money on package design than on R&D. First, the software is focused almost entirely on health club workouts (Smith machine and cable exercises) and much too light on dumbell/barbell exercises that would make sense for somebody working out at home...near a computer! This only makes sense if you're working on paper, in which case you don't need a computer, just a log. This is the most glaringly stupid aspect of this software, but there's more. Secondly, after the user has gone through the very tedious process of creating a routine (not user friendly at all), the routine's exercises list out in alphabetical order instead of being organized by day in the workout cycle and from major to minor muscle groups. Ridiculous. Finally, the resultant printout isn't anything you could easily use at a health club unless you export the info into an Excel spreadsheet or Word table and reorganize and format it.However, it would be a shame if they don't look at this as a beta version and make appropriate improvements. Anybody else remember Personal Trainer with Shane Minor? That was a much better program when it was first released, but it wasn't further developed. ... Read more

With 6,000 recipes and hundreds of cooking tips, Cook'n 2000 makes an ideal addition to the kitchen of beginning cooks who are looking to prepare simple and inexpensive meals without sacrificing variety or nutrition. This program comes with most of the expected features of cooking software: a big recipe database, the ability to halve or double recipes at the touch of a button, Internet updates, the means to build a personal cookbook of favored meals, and a quick method of generating menus and grocery lists.

Amid these tools, the lack of a genuinely powerful search engine is a glaring omission. While it is possible to filter recipes to some extent, it is hard to search for particular ingredients. On the plus side, Cook'n 2000 is compatible with everything from a 486 computer to a PalmPilot, and it comes with an extensive gallery of recipe photographs and helpful videos.

Cook'n 2000's interface is simple and easy to navigate, with a series of clearly labeled buttons at the top, and recipe information compiled in the remaining screen. Homemaking made easy!
I actually found this software at Best Buy on sale, but I love it so much I had to see if I could post a review here. I see it's out of stock, but you can find updated versions. This software makes meal planning and menu planning and planning shopping trips a complete breeze, eliminating the stress and allowing your creativity to come shining through! Even more fun are the video clips that allow you to meet some of the women who contributed their expertise and tips and tasty tidbits to this fun enterprise! The software allows you to download regular updates, and the web site has even more recipes. The CD itself includes 70 cookbooks! And imagine what THAT frees up on your shelf space! The best part about this software is that it's so much fun. I have enhanced my own creativity, developed new ideas, broke out of the meal rut we were in, and by creating specific planning, shopping and cooking time freed myself up for the reading I love! I can't say enough about this product! See if you can find it...then let me know what YOU think!

Not bad, for a Beta version
This product has the look of a Beta version released on an unsuspecting public. Any time my wife can not use a product without system failures, the product is not worth recommending. I am an 'puter tech, and her system works fine - Cook'n works poorly. Also, as noted by others, the recipes are not special, the database is underdeveloped, and the images included are essentially useless. Good marketing, bad product (Marketing are misleading, or we could call them lies.)

Bum Rap
I was impressed by this product. You have to put it in context... MasterCook has been the big boy on the block for several years and HASN'T been that responsive to users. MasterCook 5.0 (version 1) was Bug-City. Now an 8Meg "Patch" fixes most "minor bugs." Cook'n 2000 had, after years of computer cookbook use, a very easy/intuitive interface. Enjoyed the recipes.

The only two suggestions I'd advise is: Drop the "register or Die!" mentality - look - I DON'T WANT TO REGISTER the software no matter how many perks. I like my privacy. Second, no good EXPORT routines for the major products like MasterCook. When you're not the Big Kid on the block you need to read/write in MasterCook 4/5 format.

software really needs improvement
When you first look at the box, it seems like a very good software. They offer over 6000 recipes, from about 50 cookbooks. As for the recipes themselves, they are not anything special that you wouldn't find on the internet or in other cook books. The software itself has a number of capabilities. The biggest draw back is the constant error messages, no 800 number for tech support. These error messages cause the software to shut down, and many times your computer does as well. Their website indicates that there are no known problems. This either idicates that people didn't want to be bothered with informing tech support and just returned the software like I did. Or they know about the problem, bud don't have a fix. This software contained some funny video bloopers, and gives a number of video tips. However, I would have prefered more pictures of the finished product and less tips and bloopers. I most certainly would NOT recommend this software, because of the drab boring recipes and the glitchy software, that is so full of error messages that you can barely look at 3 recipes before it shuts you down.

Software needs improvement
The Cook'N 2000 software needs lots of improvement. First, The interface is not intuitive and there is no user manual included. I met or exceeded all the system specs for this product, yet I received database errors that froze up the program when logging-in, after updating just one recipe. Mulitply this by the constant "reminders" to register the product with DVO enterprises:a register.exe command is inserted in your win.ini file, causing the reminder to pop-up even when you aren't using the program. There is also the requirement that the CD must be inserted into the drive to run the program, already installed onto your PC, adding another straw to the camel's back.

I have since purchased a MasterCook 5.0 product and have been extremely happy--it has a very user-friendly and intuitive interface, comes with a detailed user book (if you need it), you can easily add your own recipes, it delivers wonderful recipes, runs without the CD inserted, and costs about the same. ...
