Adobe InDesign 2.0 is simply the best professional print design andlayout package available. Version 2.0 outweighs former market leader QuarkXPressand should dominate the future of desktop publishing with significantperformance improvements, seamless integration with other Adobe products, and abevy of sophisticated new visual effects and cross-media integration. Previousversions of InDesign were processor-intensive and sluggish. InDesign 2.0 runssignificantly faster and smoother, even on older systems like Pentium I and IIPCs. For Mac users, it is OS X native.

Graphic designers will love InDesign's robust feature set, which includesadvanced type tools that allow for multiple font-control options at both thecharacter and paragraph level. InDesign 2.0 also incorporates many of the mostuseful Photoshop visual effects, including editable drop shadows, lightingeffects, feathering, and transparency that can be applied to any object--text,graphics, or images. These effects can also be imported with native Photoshopand Illustrator file placement. In addition, InDesign's unlimited multiple undoand redo options offer a major improvement over QuarkXPress.

InDesign 2.0 not only supports tables and multipage table formatting (Quark 5.0cannot format multipage tables), it can also convert and retain the originalformatting of any tab-delimited table data from word processing, database, orspreadsheet documents such as Microsoft Word and Excel. InDesign 2.0 allows forseamless Acrobat PDF file import and placement, as well as the ability to importboth PageMaker and QuarkXPress documents (3.3 or later).

As with previous versions, InDesign 2.0 does not support documents created withQuarkXTensions. InDesign also does not allow for export to Quark or PageMakerformats or backward-compatibility file export, as did older InDesign fileversions. However, users can export InDesign 2.0 files in multiple mediaformats, including EPS, SVG, RTF, HTML, and XML. You can also embed Metadata(XMP) into InDesign layouts for automated workflows.

InDesign 2.0's Web publishing options are a significant step up over previousversions but are still fairly primitive; InDesign is emphatically not a Webeditor but instead offers limited Web publishing support. The HTML exportautomatically converts most text to images (rather than exact-positioning CSSlayers as one might expect), producing very large files with frequently poorimage quality and few image optimization options. There's also no support forbrowser preview, rollovers, or image maps, which QuarkXPress 5.0 provides.InDesign offers fairly simple and easy-to-use, well-formed XML support (no DTDs)that can both import and export XML tags; the XML in rival QuarkXPress is moreadvanced but less product-integrated and is DTD-based.

With its focus on visual effects, design production, and prepress and printingneeds, plus the added bonus of multichannel publishing support (print, Web,etc.), InDesign 2.0 is clearly intended for professional print and graphicdesigners. For easier-to-learn and more basic office and small-business documentpublishing, Adobe PageMaker or even a Microsoft publishing product is moreappropriate. Conversely, for large technical publications or larger corporationswith true cross-media publishing and content-management needs, Adobe FrameMakeris a better option, with more advanced native support for content markuplanguages and multiple export formats.

Though InDesign 2.0 offers many compelling new features, there remains room forimprovement, particularly for HTML export, WYSIWYG type menus, and more targeteduser tools. However, these are small complaints. InDesign 2.0 should be theproduct of choice for today's design professional. --Rich Ting ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerhouse for desktop publishers
I found that InDesign 2.0 offers greater flexibility than Quark and certainly is light years past PageMaker. Clearly, you need to read and compare the features of these page layout programs and, if at all possible, try the various page layout software before making a purchase. These programs still cost big bucks.

InDesign has so many whistles and bells that at first it overwhelms, but if you are already familiar with other Adobe software, the learning curve is not that steep and most of the tools and controls will seem fairly intuitive.

I especially like the flexibility of being able to import native Photoshop and Illustrator files and the easy-to-use links navigator. I also like all of the options for working with text and fine-tuning the appearance of a document. It's great to have a drop cap appear at the start of a paragraph without relying on extra tools (as in PageMaker) and seeing a preview of how a change in attributes will alter text of the same style. Features such as the ability to add metadata and export pages in SVG format are another plus.

The manual is pretty clear, though the section on breaking text links is needlessly confusing. Still, between the information in the manual and the online resource guide, most questions and issues are likely to be addressed.

If you are creating books, directories, and annual reports, then InDesign will make your life easier. It even converts Quark files so that you can work with any legacy documents.

5-0 out of 5 stars NEWSFLASH: QuarkXPress is HISTORY
When Steve Jobs announced that all the new 2003 Macs would only be able to boot in OS X, I figured it was time to step up to the plate, get oriented to the new OS and upgrade our art department. The only thing holding me back was not having a page layout app that ran natively in 10, and I had no intention of working in Jurassic mode. I had heard less than positive things about InDesign 1.0, but figured I'd do the free tryout from Adobe, since it would give me the chance to test drive Jaguar in an all-Adobe environment.

Talk about a revelation. This program's ease of use had me creating usable projects inside of a week, and by the time the tryout expired, I had converted about 150 pages of our company catalog from the old Quark files. That was when I realized how much we truly needed this package. It was as if I'd been using it for years. I could import files from Illustrator and Photoshop without having to save them as tiffs or eps. I could export press optimized pdfs without going through Distiller, that weighed in at a thrifty 4.5 mb ..... not bad when the Photoshop elements totalled over 50 meg! The tables tool is extremely helpful; it functions like a mini Excel, eliminating the need for tabs in charts. The text formatting is a breeze, the preview display looks great even at low quality, and proofs that I output to my inket printer look phenomenal. Just try doing that in Quark without getting nauseous. But wait - there's more ...... layer support and blending modes, transparency, drop shadows, gradiated text, and the list goes on. We don't need no steenking XTensions .........

Adobe InDesign is, at the time of this writing (11/02) still the only layout app that runs natively in Mac OS X, thus completing the Holy Publishing Trinity with Illy and PShop. In a way, Quark has done us a favor by dragging their feet on upgrading, thereby giving us a chance to try out a tool that is so much better, more intuitive and integrated with the other tools we have to use. It's as if Adobe stood back and observed all that didn't quite work about QXP (and that other abomination PageMaker which the company may just as well disavow), and created an app that works beautifully without having to think about it too much. Whatever the case, the timing is right, and we Mac users really appreciate it.

Adobe InDesign and Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar is, quite simply, a publisher's marriage made in Heaven.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have
If you're running OS X, InDesign is a must have for page layout. A very short learning curve particularly if you're familiar with other Adobe design softwares. Since Quark is taking their sweet time coming to the OS X table, I went ahead and tried InDesign and must say I was totally impressed. ... Read more

Your IT systems and processes may be complicated, but visualizing them doesn't have to be. With Professional Edition, you assemble drawings using predrawn shapes called SmartShapes symbols, which snap together effortlessly to represent network equipment, business processes, and more. Build certain IT diagrams based on a model that keeps track of objects for you. When you revise a database, software, directory services, or data-flow diagramming shape in your model, all instances of the shape update automatically in your diagrams. Drop your IT diagrams into Microsoft Office documents and e-mail messages, or publish them in HTML or other formats on the corporate intranet or an Internet site. With deeper Microsoft integration and richer Internet support, the Visio 2000 platform gives you convenient options for communicating with team members and clients. Because of the open architecture of the Visio 2000 platform, virtually every aspect of Professional Edition can be customized. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great new feature, same old warts, but worth it
There are some compelling reasons to upgrade to Visio 2000 if you're using an earlier version of Professional. Here are some of my favorite features that I did not have in version 5.5 include the ability to quickly lay out deployment diagrams and create more precise drawings with the dynamic grid feature. It lets you distribute and align shapes on pre-defined grid templates (or ones of your own making). It also has automatic shape numbering, which I find very useful when I am creating a complex flow or process chart. I include a legend in the drawing that corresponds with the numbered shapes to further clarify that is happening.

Another feature that is plain wonderful is the page tabs, like in Excel and other applications. This is a vast improvement over the hard-to-find pages in earlier versions. The best feature, though, is the ability to use your arrow keys to "nudge" shapes in small increments. If you are doing web-enabled diagrams you can now embed URLs (links) in your shapes that can point to web pages, other documents, drawings or even another shape on your drawing. This is an incredibly handy feature even if you are not publishing your diagram to a web page because it allows you to create drawings that can be "drilled down" into, or point to entire documents for additional information. The possibilities here are endless.

Although I don't use it, a friend raves about the feature that allows you to model directory schemas, such as Active Directory, Novell's Directory Services (NDS; now called "eDirectory"), and LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol). Since directory-enabled enterprises are based on one of these products or standards this feature alone might be reason enough to upgrade. Note that NDS modeling has long been a feature with a wizard that Visio provided for free before Microsoft acquired the product. This has now been integrated into the core product and the other directory types added.

This version can also be extensively customized without resorting to Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). ALthough the documentation that ships with Visio 2000 is lame Ralph Grabowski's excellent book, Learn Visio 2000 for the Advanced User, will show you how to fully customize Visio to meet your unique needs. This book is especially valuable if you use Visio all of the time because it will show you how to use a lot of features that you might not otherwise discover (or discover by trial and error), and how to configure Visio into a fine tool fitted to your needs instead of the generic implement it is out of the box.

Yes, Visio 2000 Professional is bloated, and yes, it still does strange things when you're editing a diagram within Microsoft Word. However, it is also incredibly powerful and easy to use. The learning curve for creating diagrams is shallow. I estimate that most people become 80% more productive even if they only use 20% of its capabilities. And the diagrams certainly add clarity to documentation. Despite the warts this version has some innovative features that make it an improvement over earlier versions. If you need the new features I cited above then the upgrade is worth it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Textures,,YES!
Having recently reviewed a companion product from Alien skin, I was thoroughly familiar with the suite of Alien Skin Programs.

Eye Candy 5 Textures loads up in a flash, and was up and running as soon as I launched Photoshop CS.

The newest offering from Alien Skin is really just one of a three part series of effects programs. The others are Eye Candy 5 Nature, and the soon to be released Eye Candy 5 Impact.

There are perhaps dozens of texture creation programs out there, including the one built in to Photoshop. So why do we need another one, you might ask?

Well, the answer is contained in the Eye Candy 5 Textures CD.
This Effects Plug-In contains a total of 10 texture groups, with a total of over 200 presets available for immediate use.

If you are a user that regularly needs to go searching for various textures to place into your artwork, you will absolutely love this program.

And a great built in feature with Eye Candy 5 Textures is that every filter has a seamless tile option that really gives the user the ultimate power to create as they see fit.

On to the filter groups:There are 10 major texture groups:Animal Fur, Brick Wall,Diamond Plate, Marble, Reptile Skin,Stone Wall, Swirl, Texture Noise, Weave, and Wood.

Located in each of these groups are the menu controls, and presets that bring the real power to this program.

The presets are all located in a left hand box within the main menu window.
The controls are on sliders, and control everything from the variations to the color, and many many other controls for each specific filter group. And I found most of these custom controls to be fairly intuitive, and straight forward.

In addition to these controls, there is a button bar with buttons at the top of this window that brings up entire new sets of additional controls, like lighting direction, settings, etc.
And in addition to all of the preset effects, and your own creations, you also have the option to save any custom presets that you have personally designed.

So, like any true Photoshop effects junkie, I jumped in with both feet.
I created a new file (a small one @ 72 PPI) to experiment with. Now, I realize that I will probably be using this program only on much larger images, but this image was built to play with, and play I did.

The first new texture group is aptly titled "Fur"(can you guess what it creates?).
Immediately I was scrolling through the myriad of preset effects made to resemble all types of realistic animal fur..Way cool stuff.

I then jumped to the new "Brick Wall"filter, and was again having a great idea; of fun just experimenting with all of the great effects that were possible.

But then I switched to the New "Diamond Plate" filter, and was really asking myself questions like "where can you use this on my next project"?These are all just wonderful effects, and it is obvious that Alien Skin has done their homework with this entire plug-in.
I "textured" my way through Marble, Reptile Skin, and Stone Wall, and loved most of what I saw.Deciding right then and there that I will be filing away these great textures for future use when the right project comes along.

So, all in all without any hesitation, I love this program. It loads up fast, runs fast, and has some of the best textures that I have ever used. And it even runs now in a 16 bit mode as well.Alien Skin 5 Textures contains numerous improvements in the user interface such as a new "Show Original" button, and an improved online help system that really works wonderful. There are other nice touches added like integrating Photoshop style keyboard shortcuts, and unlimited undo's to make every user smile.

Alien Skin 5 Textures is an amazingly powerful program, and one that I will be telling all of my friends about for a while.Alien Skin has continued to produce great, user friendly effects programs, and this one gets my vote for the best fun in a box available. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Dissappointed
I was very dissappointed with this product! At first glance, I thought it was a great value for the money. I suppose it still would be compared to similar products if I could only get it to recognize either of my writeable drives. I purchased this product at Costco.

I contacted tech support and downloaded updated databases. I actually did this before and again after contacting support. This did not work so I am still waiting on another response from tech support.

By the way...I believe this item IS returnable to the manufacturer. Check the manufacturer's website! They give instructions for returning the product if you are not satisfied. I will be doing this myself if I do not get some workable solutions.

August 4, 2004

Well...I finally received a response back from tech support. They did/could not help me any further. In fact, their only suggestion is that I return the product for a refund which is exactly what I will do.I knew this was too good a value for the money to be true.I am currently looking at Pro Show Gold.I have downloaded the trial version and so far it seems to work with my hardware. The price comparison is not even close, but then you tend to get what you pay for.

As for this product, I would not recommend it to anyone. The only saving grace is the return policy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very easy to use
I am not sure what the first reviewer's problem was, but using the help screen, I made a DVD in about 10 minutes. You just add the pictures, add any audio file or record yourself, and compile. To make a DVD it did take about 2 and a half hours (it's a lot of data) but I was able to play the DVD on my recorder. The help screen on the program gives step by step instructions with illustrations. Very easy, simple, and clean to make DVD slide shows.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Time or Money
I bought this, and what a waste! The instructions are about a paragraph long, and the program is NOT user friendly. When I called their technical support program, which is NOT 24 hour or an 800 number, the technicans were out to lunch! What a joke! I really wish that software was returnable! ... Read more
