2-0 out of 5 stars Questionable Color
First and foremost you need to know my background. I'm an Illustrator and I've been working with color and images a very long time. I'm also extremely adept at computers having my A+, Network+, MCSE, MCSA and CCNA certifications. I've always relied on Adobe Gammma to do the job but my Dell 5100 Laptop needed a lot of help.

Ok, so I've been trying to get my color calibrated correctly for a while now. The main problem has been my Dell 5100 Laptop showing colors a tad bit too dark. So I went out and bought this Spyder with PhotoCal software.

Installation was a breeze. The software booted up great onto Windows Xp Pro and Home and it instantly recognized the Colorimeter tool (the plastic attachment that measures the color on your screen).

The calibration is only Wizard-based (which kinda sucked). It guides you step-by-step with the following questions...
1) Is this a CRT or LCD
2) Would you like 1.8 or 2.2 Gamma?
3) Would you like 5000 or 6500 color temperature.
4) Can you adjust the color settings? Yes, No and Presets are options.

If you select No, then it starts the calibration immediately by scanning all gradations of RGB, White, Black and Grey.

If you select Yes, then it quickly scans normal RGB and then asks you to adjust the colors through your monitor until they all meet inside a thin rectangular box (I thought the calibrator was supposed to do this!). Once you calilbrate your own monitor, it starts running through all the gradations of RGB, White Grey and Black as mentioned above.

Finally...it asks you to save your ICC profile and it creates a nifty Startup program similar to Adobe Gamma that boots with Windows.

First was my 19" Dell 1901FP LCD monitor. The love of my life. Color on this monitor is quite nice but I decided to give it a go and test it out anyways. I deleted Adobe Gamma from my startup folder and away we went.

Once done, I was somewhat happy. The white, however, seemed rather blueish. All the other colors seemed ok. I was semi-content and moved on to my notebook. This was trickier since I can't adjust color settings and I had to completely rely on the Spyder to do the job. It finished and looked semi-decent. So being in a hurry I packed everything away and left to work.

At work...things got bad quick. I booted up my Dell 5100 Laptop and immediately noticed the colors were quite dark. As a matter of fact, my gamma was screwed. I was looking at a picture of some black Rollerblades I was selling on eBay and I couldn't differentiate the blacks from the midtones. It was just a congestion of really dark mids and highlight.

So I did some research and found out I was supposed to calibrate without any ambient light sources. This was buried in the PhotoCal CD and was never mentioned in the Wizard. At the time I had daylight and tungsten lights (Reveal lightbulbs) so I guessed that's what I did wrong. So tonight, in complete and total darkness I once again calibrated both the LCD and Notebook monitor and I achieved the same results. The notebook was deathly dark and although the colors were much better off, I simply couldn't adjust the gamma. The whites on the Dell 1901FP 19" display were still blue-toned.

This product did not calibrate my Notebook as promised and it left my LCD's colors questionable. In my line of work, there can't be any questions. This product is going back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, you do need this, and it works
If the image on your monitor doesn't match what comes out of the printer, this gizmo will fix the problem. It works with both CRTs and LCD's. It takes 15 minutes and when youre done the monitor will use a custom profile that sets the mix of red, green and blue correctly, along with the brightness. You have to know in advance what kind of controls your monitor has -- no color controls -- common on laptops, or user-set RGB and color temperature controls. But the insructions tell you how to find out, and the product works with either type. Hint #1: To see the monitor controls and the calibration pattern simultaneuously, open the PhotoCal software, drag it over to one side of the screen and then open the monitor controls and drag them over to the other side. #2: Re-run the calibration after you adjust the monitor to check the results -- the software doesn't cycle back by itself. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Some great new features, but look before you leap
The newest version of Visio is the first version built completely by Microsoft since the product was acquired. It's a part of the XP family of products and an official member of the Office XP family.

Sporting the XP interface it has features that I am excited about: (1) Professional and Technical versions are combined. You get IT and facilities diagrams and wizards in the same package. (2) You can create diagrams that can export properties to XML. The possibilities are endless: exchange product data with suppliers and customers based on your own product's attributes, export bill of materials to ERP systems, manage assets and get control of total cost of ownership and export process model data to other tools. (3) You can directly scan images or download photos from digital cameras into Visio and use the new photo editing tools to enhance or modify the images to suit your needs. (4) Analyze your web site and develop a complete report of all links. A powerful feature is spotting broken links, making this a good tool for your quality assurance group.

I do not like the possible "gotchas" in the web link feature. Specifically, When you type a hyperlink in a Microsoft Office XP application (of which this version is a part), it has been reported that the application will alter what you've typed, without notifying you or giving you an opportunity to undo the "correction." Not good.

Before making a purchase decision there are issues and factors that you need to consider very carefully. As part of the XP family of products, Visio 2002, like the XP operating system and Office family, will require activation over the Internet once it's been installed. You can bring it up and use it 5 times before activation, but after that it will not work. This is Microsoft's defense against piracy, and at first glance is a sensible scheme. However, if you reinstall it you have to call Microsoft and get instructions. This is NOT a sensible scheme for a number of reasons. First, I travel, and sometimes outside of the country. Calling Redmond is not viable if my system crashes and I need to reload applications. Second, if I want to upgrade my hard drive I cannot simply reinstall this application (or any of the "XP" family applications or operating systems) because when I first activated it there is an entry made in some database somewhere that says this application is already installed and cannot be activated again. The solution is to call and have some unknown drone bypass big brother. What is this going to cause me in lost productivity?

If you need the features (and they are compelling) and can live with the possible web link problem and licensing and activation issues, then this is a worthwhile product. Think long and hard about the issues part, though, because it has ramifications that can be much more serious than I've described. On the other hand, perhaps a wave of good sense will descend upon Redmond and they come up with a more workable solution that shows they care about customers and understand stuff like total cost of ownership and the value of productivity.

Personally, I am passing this one by (along with the other XP products) until/unless there is a better way to recover from disasters like hard disk crashes or upgrade my system without the barriers that have been placed by the vendor. My productivity and sanity is worth more to me than the new features. You have my opinion and must decide for yourself.

2-0 out of 5 stars The good, the bad and the ugly

The ugly - things about this product that scare me: As part of the XP family of products, Visio 2002, like the XP operating system and Office family, will require activation over the Internet once it's been installed. You can bring it up and use it 5 times before activation, but after that it will not work. This is Microsoft's defense against piracy, and at first glance is a sensible scheme. On the other hand, perhaps a wave of good sense will descend upon Redmond and they come up with a more workable solution that shows they care about customers and understand stuff like total cost of ownership and the value of productivity.

For the record, I am not ruining a perfectly good version of Visio by installing this version over it. My productivity and sanity is worth more to me than the new features. You have my opinion and must decide for yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars De facto standard for drawing pro diagrams in no time!
As a Project Manager in charge of diverse areas, ranging from software development responsibilities to administration of a production area, I've found this tool to be of extreme use since day one. This application allows to draw on a "white" canvas diagrams in ways that exceed any other tool in the market, including flowcharts, floor plans, office layouts, network diagrams, database ORMs, organization charts, etc. You name it and the software comes with a template of standard shapes for you to drag and drop, unite with arrows/lines as needed, and put out a professional-looking diagram in a matter of minutes (you need to put in the brainwork, no discussion about that, of course!)

If you are going to compare Visio with anything else, the "closest" thing would be the very limited charting capabilities offered by PowerPoint (no wonder Microsoft acquired the company that created Visio!) This is no substitute (never was meant to be) for Adobe Illustrator or any similar graphics program. Hands down, without a doubt, this is the de facto standard for drawing professional diagrams of all types in no time!

4-0 out of 5 stars Worst program ever?
This program is NOT a graphics program, it's a flow charting program. If you want a graphics program stick with Adobe, Jasc, or other related products. If you want a comprehensive flow charting program with ease of use, stick with Visio. I've used it for 8 plus years and found to be a valuable business tool.

Because Microsoft purchased the product, then bumped the price up by 100%, I'm forced only give it four stars due to the cost.
I bought the orginal program for under $50 when it first came out.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Graphics Program Ever
Once again Microsoft is putting out {garbage}. I use Adobe Illustrator and Visio is not even in the ballpark as far as ease of use or capability. Even for the most simple functions Visio is cumbersome, clumsy and difficult to use. One example is text that is not scaleable. Why would anybody in their right mind want a graphics program where the test does not scale with the graphic? Selecting objects and using layers are both absolutely horrible. The interface is also very not intuitive! Microsoft, please put this foolish excuse for a graphics program out of it's (and our) misery! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Matter of Choice
InDesign-a lovely second act to the ubiquituous Quark. I have been using Indesign for about three months and while I appreciate many of the differences, I find it a perplexing and often frustrating program. It seems to have a mind of its own. Type suddenly becomes highlighted, drop shadows appear unwanted, and if anyone can figure out the how to line type up on the baseline (the fools at Adobe support certainly don't) please let us in on it. It's a program with too many choices, too many foolish options. Design, while always in the market for options can suffer from too many, delicate controls. I am happy to have learned InDesign, but I must confess it is with some relief and confidence that I often return to that embattled Quark just to get the job done.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now the best, but so was Betamax
Given the creativity and productivity improvements available in InDesign I would like to think the world would drop Quark and instantly embrace InDesign. I'm sure Adobe would like that, too. Fat chance. The CS version is truly a program come of age and a worthy inheritor of the page layout crown. But, alas, the world runs on Quark and that doesn't seem likely to change any time soon. I use it because I have to, not because I want to. I just hope InDesign doesn't become the software version of the Betamax.

4-0 out of 5 stars Takes Page Design to a New Level
Adobe PageMaker has evolved into InDesign CS. Shedding its caterpillar skin, InDesign CS has emerged as a marvelous butterfly. It is fitting tribute that a pen and butterflies adorn the Adobe InDesign CS box.

Adobe InDesign CS software combines production power with graphic freedom. Designers can lay out pages more rapidly. You will find that InDesign CS shares standard Adobe commands, tools, palettes, and shortcuts with Adobe
Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator software programs.

Work More Efficiently with InDesign CS

InDesign creative toolset gives flight to your design ideas. Designers and Illustrators can work more efficiently with InDesign's organized tools. You will save production time by importing native Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator files.

Business designers can work with popular PageMaker features in InDesign CS. This includes data merge, ALAP InBooklet Special Edition for imposition, and dynamic bullets and numbering. InDesign CS easily converts PageMaker 6.0 and 7.0 files with the included document converter.

Work Experience with InDesign

I find the InDesign Story Editor similar to PageMaker Story Editor. Using Control "Y" or simply right-clicking (or control-clicking) the text will call up the Story Editor. This allows you to use live editing for your page design's content and styles.

I can edit text and make changes in a section of my document without having to go to my "Continued on Page . . ." I have found this helpful in a multiple page document. You can set the preferences for font, font size, line spacing and background color.

Unfortunately, Story Editor is not a full-featured text editor since there are no spell checker, outlining, or table capabilities.

You can set your document "presets" for page size, columns and margins that are similar to Printer and PDF Export presets. Using the InDesign selection tool, I can drag the handles and press the shift key to preserve the frame's
original proportions. In addition, you can import styles from Microsoft Word.

InDesign CS has resizing capabilities but it takes several attempts to get resizing done right. I find it easier to resize my photographs in Photoshop before importing graphics to InDesign. This allows me to crop images to my desired shape and resize them.

I can move the palettes by holding the Option key and dragging them anywhere on my desktop space. You can make changes to tables and your headers and footers and line them up to where you want them to appear.

Pro Reaction

The standard Adobe interface works well with InDesign CS, Photoshop and Illustrator. InDesign has nested styles and XML support. InDesign CS has a new Story Editor and better separation and new flattening previews. Noted was improved performance and new tools and palettes in InDesign CS.

Con Reaction

Within InDesign CS, you cannot save files for use with InDesign 2.0 or earlier. You cannot save InDesign files to QuarkXPress. Opening complex pages within InDesign CS takes a large amount of time on Mac G3 computers.

Final Remarks

This InDesign CS version is a full-blown power-packed upgrade. I feel that InDesign CS will convert more PageMaker and Quark users over to the new Adobe InDesign CS program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quark: move aside!
InDesign CS is perhaps the application that benefited most from the most recent upgrade that Adobe made to its key applications, bringing a load of useful and highly expected features and built to take advantage of all the system enhancements that OSX Panther has to offer. I'd like to stress ONE feature, though, that blew me away... two words: NESTED STYLES. If you have suffered through the painful process of laying out a document where more than two styles are required in a particular content block, you will shed tears of joy when you see this at work!

You are bound to also find very handy the enhanced table features such as automated running headers and footers for tables that run across multiple linked text frames. Printers (people in the printing industry) are also going to be happy (or so Adobe wants) with the features that have been included in InDesign CS for them.

All in all, if I were Quark, I'd be shaking because InDesign is not going to stop until it takes over the current market share that QuarkXpress has... it's just a matter of time and perhaps a version or two more. But try CS now: I think you will love it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best
I've been working for a print shop for around three years now, and have been doing computer aided design work for about 7 years now and I must say that Quark is simply the best in desktop publishing software there is, well worth the extra money over PageMaker, InDesign, and the very very sad Publisher.

Sure, Quark isn't quite as friendly as PageMaker, but there is a reason for that. Quark works on logic as opposed to trying to be "friendly". Quark was obviously designed by people who were actually layout artists before the days of computerized design, and it shows. The layout looks exactly like what you would see on an old mock-up.

Granted this means you have to know a bit about layout and design, but you get much better results, and the pre press department at the printer will love you if you use Quark correctly. PageMaker and InDesign are clunky and a bit obnoxious to deal with.

Our shops usual response to someone asking what program to use it "Find someone to design it for you in Quark". It's not a tool for someone to run out and buy if they don't know what they are doing, but it's deffinately the tool to use for professional results.

2-0 out of 5 stars Gouges the Consumer Plus Frustrating as all get out
I made up my mind a year ago to learn 4 computer art/graphics based programs, the industry leaders. These were Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver and Quark. Of the four, my worst experience has been with Quark. I find myself fighting it every step of the way and that there is no intuitive sense to its interface. To add insult to injury, it is by far the more expensive of the 4 programs. To think that this program is ... more than Photoshop, an absolute masterpiece of a program, boggles my mind! I also find the educational support materials and online assistance for this product way below what is available for the other three. Adobe's website is a consumer/educational paradise in comparison to Quark's idea of consumer/educational support. I've just seen Adobe's In Design, the competitor for this product, demonstrated live in the classroom and I am eager to try it instead, especially since it was designed to work hand in hand with Photoshop and Illustrator. My design work uses a lot of visuals so Photoshop-friendly is very important to me. I'd try this product and Adobe's In Design out at your local community college first before spending this kind of money on this program. I also saw in the classroom demo that you can pull any of your existing Quark files right into Adobe's In Design so no one should have trouble switching over to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Can't Use Quark You're A Novice
I learned how to effectively use Quark in the first 2 weeks of my college Prepress class, and anybody in the design world knows that if you can't use it you're a novice. It's itelligent, straight forward and an essential program for any graphic designer to master. All the complaints about this program are the result of non professionals who are either unwilling or unable to learn how to use it properly. "In Design" - what a joke. I love Adobe products, but let's get serious. If you can't use Quark, you might as well start applying for a job designing the Church Newsletter, because you can't get a top level design position without knowing this program. If you are studying to be a designer - trust me... learn it, know it, love it!

I thought I purchased 5.0 but it's quarkxpress 6.0 passport. I cannot set it up to do the documents right. I cannot do pdf files. they come out with quarkxpress demo on every page. I really needed this software for my business and I feel that I have been ripped off.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it and always will!!
Working for a large commercial printer of books and magazines, I gasp everytime someone sends us a book in anything other than Quark. On the Mac and especially on the PC, you can't beat it for ease of use, design functions and "RIPablity" to our high end image setters. Quark 5 rocks!! ... Read more
