Microsoft typically supplements its operating systems with a retail grab bag of utilities and entertainment-oriented applications called Microsoft Plus. For Windows XP, it has released not one but two such packages. The latest, Microsoft Plus Digital Media Edition, sports nearly a dozen perks, toys and tools for those who use their PC as a multimedia companion. Though some will find the program packs its fair share of incidental "fluff", anyone into photos, video or music will undoubtedly find several components both useful and enjoyable.

Digital camera buffs will quickly take to Photo Story, wherein they can organize their favorite pictures in slideshow format, add narration, and create a dynamic sense of motion by manually or automatically zooming or panning across each shot. The end result is flowing and compelling and far less stagnant than a standard still presentation.

The program also has plenty of goodies for music fans, including Analog Recorder, a clever utility that transcribes audio in real time from traditional sources such as cassettes and 8-tracks (cables not included), organizes them into playlists, and efficiently removes pops and hiss via technology licensed from respected pro audio veteran Syntrillium Corp. Slightly less impressive is CD Label Maker, which offers a standard selection of CD labels and templates but unfortunately emblazons a Microsoft Plus logo onto each one. Party Mode stretches your Windows Media Player to fill the entire screen and displays customizable marquee announcements and animations, and the aptly named Audio Converter converts MP3 and WAV files to space-efficient WMA files.

Arguably Digital Media Edition’s most disposable feature is Plus Dancer, a selection of minuscule live action pop-up dancers who cavort on command across the desktop. Conversely, the practical Sync & Go allows users of pocket PCs to enjoy their favorite PC content on their portable. Microsoft rounds out this eclectic package with several tidbits and novelties, including a variable interval alarm clock, eight mediocre Windows Media Player skins, and fifty additional transitions and visual effects for Microsoft’s free downloadable video editor, Windows Movie Maker. --Gord Goble ... 3-0 out of 5 stars "A" Plus!?... Well.........................
If your computer meets the minimum specs, yes even those in tiny print, then you will most likely enjoy the enhancements this adds to your computer. Missing that 16 MB video card, don't bother with Plus!.

Like screensavers? What about 3-D? How about trying 3-D Screensavers! Plus! pack will add these new screensavers onto your computer and let the fun begin as you watch fish swim in a realistic aquarium or a circus type scene play before your eyes...

If you're a gamer, the bowling game is GREAT... The only problem is that it is a light edition, so to unlock its full functionality you'll have to pay! The labyrinth game is great and quite difficult to do, will keep you playing for hours!

The themes are good if you use themes... Remember that space theme from ME? Its back in a revamped fashion! Also there are themes for an aquarium and some other interesting ones... Personally I don't like the themes!

The new enhancements to Media Player are OK, but are not really worth the difficulty of configuring. Do you really want to give commands to your computer with your voice? Catch a cold, and this functionality won't work anyway...

Overall this is an OK package, but not one that I would spend the money on. After buying this, I was sorry... I won't make the same mistake again!

2-0 out of 5 stars Non functional without downloads, Not worth the hassle
Just bought it not worth the hassle

Its not very functional without tonnes of MS downloads so dont buy it if you have a 56kb modem like me. I dont want to have to download a tonne of updates, I want functional out of the box.

Product Activation should not be on products this cheap, its a waste of my time. I have no problem with activation on Windows and Office because theyre high value products and at least you get to try them out before activating... This though is a hassle.

The digital music converion program only converts to WMA, I expect at least one alternative format such as WAV or MP3. Bad software in a pretty box.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great program
I don't really use most of the programs in this package...except Photo Story. Photo Story is incredible! I have done video CDs for my parents' wedding anniversary, seniors graduating from high school (we have two seniors in our private school and will use the stories at graduation), a teacher appreciation banquet, etc. Just hook your DVD player to a projector, and voila! You're ready to go. The ability to add music really makes the stories moving. My only complaint is that you are limited to one music track, so if the story is long, the song just repeats itself over and over. Hopefully, with the next upgrade, they'll add the ability to use more than one music track. That's the only improvement I see that it needs. Great for creating memories for your family and friends!

4-0 out of 5 stars Want more themes?
If you want lots of themes you can try TGT softs Style XP.
Style XP gave me lots of themes and can be found at http://www.tgtsoft.com/

2-0 out of 5 stars not really a must...
Although many of its stuff are pretty fun to use and creative, but after all, it is not really a "must" have item. and though its only 18 bucks, still seems a bit expensive for its actual usage. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Pinnacle Systems' Pinnacle Studio MovieBox captures and digitizes analog composite and S-video signals and delivers them through your PC's USB 2.0 port. Bundled Studio 8 software helps you edit and assemble clips for recording onto videotape or for burning onto CD or DVD media.

To set up MovieBox, we connected the power and video source cables and followed the Windows New Hardware Wizard to install the driver software on our notebook computer. Next, we followed onscreen prompts to install Studio 8. The entire process was intuitive and took 16 minutes. Note that MovieBox USB has neither input nor output support for FireWire, so you will likely use a VCR instead of a digital camcorder as the primary input device.

Before testing MovieBox with Stuido 8, we tried to see if other editing programs would recognize the device. Neither Nero Vision nor Windows Movie Creator was able to initialize MovieBox, so expect to use it exclusively with Studio 8. Upon starting Studio 8, the program presented us with a simple but thorough 17-minute video explaining the basics of capturing, editing, and making a movie.

In our tests, we captured and edited over two hours of clips without a single error--not even one lost frame. Studio 8 intuitively handled positioning and trimming clips, adding transition effects between scenes, and creating DVD menus. The biggest drawback was the lack of multi-level undo--that is, you can undo only one previous mistake, which means correcting even minor errors can quickly become time-consuming and very irritating.

Rendering and compiling finished DVDs took between a few minutes and several hours depending on complexity. The final results were mixed. Some movies looked very good, with video quality about average for the cost of the device; others suffered from out-of-sync video and audio. Overall, MovieBox is a simple, intuitive solution for novice home moviemaking. Professionals and serious amateurs will lament its lack support for popular video editing software, its intermittent quality, and its single-level undo. --Mike Brown

Pros:

  • Easy to install and learn
  • Simple to capture, edit, and add dazzling effects
  • No lost frames in our tests
Cons:
  • Single-level undo command
  • Does not support third-party editing software
  • Video and audio sometimes out of sync

3-0 out of 5 stars The product is flawed, but not hopelessly
I received the MovieBox for Christmas 2003 and have spent about 40 hours with it. First to pros. It is easy to install, captures video flawlessly, and the editing software (Studio 8) is fantastic. Being able to take 3 hours of home videos (which like everyone's included things that in hindsight didn't turn out great) and cut it down to an hour+ of fun scenes, add music and digital photos was worth every penny.

The negatives. MovieBox only imports audio in mpeg format. I didn't even know this mattered until I went to make a DVD and I ran into the out of sync problem where the sound is 1 second behind the video. The product claims to be able to make DVDs from any source, but this audio limitation is a real problem. Second, my video ended up being 75 minutes long. Studio 8 appeared to burn the disc properly, using a lower quality setting to fit it all on the disk, but when the disc is played in a DVD player random sections of video are missing. Pinnacle says you can only put an hour on a DVD, which is a stupid and erroneous claim. Lastly, the support on this product is horrendous.

Luckily there is a fix. Instead of using Studio 8 to burn a DVD, I created an MPEG file of the video on my harddrive. This solved the audio syncing problem. I then used ULead's DVD Moviefactory (which came included with my PC) to turn the MPEG file into a DVD. It worked great. This method does require you to render the video twice, which can degrade the picture, but I didn't notice any difference in my case.

I'd call it an ok product that with some tweaks could be great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works flawlessly
I've been using the MovieBox with a Compaq Centrino notebook with a 1.4 GHz Pentium-M and Windows XP. I am using it to transfer VHS tapes to DVD.

Installing the MovieBox went smoothly. It includes a full copy of Pinnacle Studio 8.6. At the end of installation I was prompted to download an upgrade to version 8.8, which also installed without a hitch. The upgrade fixes AV sync problems that some people have experienced. I am able to capture video at 720x480, 30 fps, at bitrates ranging from 4 Mbps to 12 Mbps, and I get no dropped frames. I've done captures up to 2 hours long, and audio/video syncronization remains perfect throughout. Picture quality is very good. My only complaint is the unit gets very hot during captures.

For comparison, I have also used an ATI All-In-Wonder 7500. The MovieBox has slightly better picture quality than the AIW. The AIW appears to have more artifacts when capturing at the same bitrates.

2-0 out of 5 stars Possible solution to audio synch
I haven't actually used the MovieBox, but came here to read reviews on it.

However, I have been using Studio 8 for a while with another capture device and have also experience the audio out of synch problem.

I have found a work-around that works for me and have been posting it everywhere I see other comments on the problem.

The answer is to NOT allow the hardware to capture the audio. Rather than connecting the RCA audio to the box, connect the audio directly to your PC's line-in jack on the soundcard. I use one of those RCA to headphone jack splitters for connecting a portable CD player to a sound system. Then you set the audio capture source in the Studio program from the breakout box to line-in.

I was pulling my hair out like everyone else until I stumbled upon this solution (by attempting to capture with Adobe Premiere which doesn't recognize my hardware as an audio input). Since I've been doing it this way, I have made about a dozen DVD's, with lengths from 10 min to 1 hour with perfect audio synch.

Maybe it will work for you guys who've already bought the software. If you haven't bought it yet, though, look elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty damn good
Ive only used this product twice and captured my 2 hour wedding video with no problem. I upgraded from the 8.6 ver. it comes with to 8.10 and there are no sync problems. I'm running a p4 with 2.66ghz. & 768mb ram and only a 40gb 7200rpm hard drive with no problems (knock on wood). I might get a second hard drive though just to keep my video seperate from my files. I would recommend this product only if your pc is fast enough

4-0 out of 5 stars Worked Fine For Me
I do not understand why there are so many complants with this product. I used it with no problems at all. I even have it hooked up 16 feet away from my computer via a 16 foot 2.0 USB Cable. I had the box set up behind my TV with the output going into the box via S-VHS connect and RCA for sound. Then drilled a hole in my floor and ran the USB cable under my house and up into my computer. I recorded many times with NO droped frames. I recorded over a hour program without stoping and had no problems. Be aware this machine has to have a very fast computer. I believe this is where most of your problems come from. You HAVE to have a fast hard drive and processer. and at least 512 meg ram. I am running a P4 2.53ghz with 512 Ram and a western digital 7200 rpm 80 gig drive and using windows XP.
Only complaint I have is the time it takes to render the program for playback. I use mine as a PVR (Personal Video Recorder)
All I can say is works great for me! Love it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Quality, Full of Features
I'm always impressed with the quality of Adobe software products and Audition is no exception.

The product is incredibly poweful, with gobs of useful effects and approachable controls. Normalizing a track is very easy and effective. The filters and equalizers are very easy to use, though a little tricky to use. The learning curve for applying most filters is mitigated because they can be applied to a stream while the stream is playing; their effect isn't always immediate, but close enough that you're not stuck changing, listening, changing back, and waiting.

The graphics and the user interface presentation are top-notch; the program paints waveforms and scrolls very quickly, zooming conveniently and highlighting and drawing flawlessly. There are a few small bugs in the UI (like "Cool Edit" remaining in some captions, and some windows receiving a flashy custom painting scheme, but others not). None of these problems gets in the way of productivity, however.

There's a whole CD full of loops in the package, and even more can be downloaded from Adobe online for free!

Some of the program's stregnths are some of its weaknesses. It's incredible power is intimidating, so plan on spending some time learning and playing with the options before you feel comfortable using them. The program is also very resource hungry; WAV files take up tons of disk space, so you'll want a fast disk subsystem and plenty of memory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice to use, and powerful muiti-track audio editor.
Adobe's Audition is probably the nicest and cleanest looking audio editing desktop environment I've seen. I liked the way in which you can import a CD track directly without having to launch a CD player beforehand, and the 'Save As' options are plentiful.

You also have 128 tracks onto which you can have music and sound effects for when you're making digital videos, and are able to synchronize these tracks with an editing application such as Adobe's Premiere, to get around its usable. but limited. audio capabilities.

Audition can also apply many temporal and tonal effects.

Not so very long ago you needed racks of outboard gear including timecode locked multi-track tape-machines costing tens of thousands of dollars to do the basics of what can be done with Audition. I look back at that time and am frankly amazed at how much today's powerful PCs allied to inexpensive software can do for those interested in audio and digital film production without breaking the bank.

This is a very good and sophisticated product that goes beyond the basics that many people would require, but if they are anticipating the need to go beyond a basic editing application, Audition would be a great choice.

Be sure to use a fast, up-to-date computer, with lots of hard drive space - preferably as separate hard drives attached to independent IDE or RAID controllers - if you intend to be doing complex projects. Also keep the drives defragged to keep it all humming along.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff
This is great stuff. This is essentially a port of Cool Edit Pro, but may undergo changes in the future. This appears to fit well in the Adobe family of offerings. I use this to take MP3 recordings from church sermons and do manipulations (trim, mono, de-noise, filter, normalize) to make them sound much better. For single track work it may be overkill (Cool Edit 2000) may suffice. The 128 tracks are very nice to have handy. With the extensive number of (free!) loops online, it is great. Setting up tracks and loops is easy and intuitive. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Add-On to Pinnacle Studio
Hollywood FX Plus for Studio 7.x or higher is an excellent add on product.

Studio 7 and 8 are notorious for being unstable but if you can get them to work right, the addition of FX Plus will make your editing even more enjoyable.

You have many new affects with FX Plus. Some of the effects rival the Video Toaster or even broadcast quality products. You just have to see them to believe it.

One thing to note: you will really need a 3D Graphics card to help out with the most complex transitions. The software rendering on slower machines just causes most systems to crash.

If you have Studio 7.x or higher, you MUST get this add on. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New horizon
The CS series offers a great new horizon for Adobe products on OS X. As a designer at an extremely busy design agency, we have found the CS series to be a huge improvement. InDesign is proving to be the victor in the war with Quark. The massive diversity and ease of use of this program is paramount to cross media integration (print to web). These versions of Photoshop and Illustrator are simply the best. The usability of GoLive needs some tweaking, I much prefer Macromedia's Dreamweaver MX 2004. But all in all, hats off to Adobe!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what you need for both the Web and Print!
Photoshop... Not much needed to be said about it! Not much out there with as much to compare it to.

Illustrator... I simply love this product! It is easy to use and the results port perfectly into the rest of the suite.

InDesign... It takes a little getting use to, but then, it is EXTREMELY easy to use. This one is finally very stable! It is actually fun mixing this with illustrator. The two work extremely well together and produce expectional results! Add a few Photoshop edited graphics to the mix and there is nothing to slow you down!

Version Cue... Haven't used this very much. Nice addition though.

GoLive... If you need an editor and you use Photoshop, This fits in really well.

The one thing that puts this set above all the rest is the integration of PDF across the entire platform and the interoperability between the product.

The down side is that they still need to work on a SINGLE interface. I like the way InDesign's interface works with the tool bars hugging the sides of the screens. I wish they would impliment that across all of the products. Still, in terms of pure functionality, it is really hard to beat this suite! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for burning DVD's, not for VCD's ...
I bought this software mainly for burning DVD's, and not for VCD's on my CD writer. I did, however, burn a VCD Picture Show file onto a CD-R and when I played it on my computer, the pictures looked really bad. After reading the manual, I discovered that if you burn a VCD with transitions, the slideshow is written in very low resolution (352x240), as opposed to creating a slideshow with no transitions (704x480). One of the best features of this program (or any slideshow program) is the ablility to have really cool transitions from one picture to the next and with the VCD format, you really can't use them unless you like looking at a very degraded version of your original image.

On the other hand, the DVD burning part of the program is very good. The pictures look close to the original photos that you use, although not perfect. If you start out with very high quality images, you'll be very happy. However, the pictures seem to lose a little bit between viewing the originals on my computer screen and transferring and burning them to a Picture Show.

All in all, a very good program for burning DVD's but for creating VCD's, I would look elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect but great for the price
This beats any CD-Writer Software that I have tried to make picture slideshows with(Nero and Roxio) The interface is well designed and easy to use. Simply drag and drop your photos. Give the slideshow a name. You then get to design your main DVD startup screen, I wish it had more templates for the main screen. There are some problems with adding audio, like a another reviewer stated, not big a problem.

I do recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST PRODUCT FOR A SLIDE SHOW ON YOUR TV!!!
I bought DVD PictureShow 2 after being extremely frustrated with Roxio DVD creator. I was trying to put a very large slideshow together for my daughter's wedding. It was a snap.

1. Easy ability to import a zillion digital images.

2. Then the program will fill your TV with each image, even if the sizes are not the same.

3. It is true, you have to build an audio track using a sound editor, if you want more than one song on the Slide Show. I used Audio Surgeon to match major theme changes to the music. For example, I wanted Song XX to start on slide number 225. At 3 seconds per slide, that occured at 675 seconds, or 11 minutes and 15 seconds into the slide show. With the sound editor I built a single .mp3 track to swap songs at 11 minutes and 15 seconds. The rub is "Will DVD PictureShow 2 be as accurate after 11 minutes of flipping 225 slides?" YES!!!! It was perfect!!

4. We did have problems playing a DVD in an older Toshiba DVD Player, but it has worked flawlessly in every other one we tried.

Compared to the other things I have tried, this product is world's ahead. Get it.

Hope this helps.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works for me
I have used this program to make 10 different DVD's and it has worked great for me. I have no complaints. It's very simple to use. One thing that would be nice is the ability to put more than one audio track per slide show. I had to use an audio editor to splice together music tracks to to make the audio track long enough. Now, the program simply loops the same track. I really like the concept of viewing your pictures on TV, they are so big. The pictures look good too.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cool thing to be able to do, but...
There are still some bugs, such as...
if you add music to your slideshows, you cannot manually go forwards or backwards while watching. You have to either wait until it finishes playing or hit the eject button because stop and pause do not work. Also, you can't have more than 2 pages on your main menu screen, if so, your dvd player won't recognize the cd you just made. I've tried this so many times, with different options selected. It got 2 stars because it was super easy to learn. Otherwise it would have been 0 stars. ... Read more
