1-0 out of 5 stars MONEY WASTER
They brag about having the chroma key or whatever. But there is one problem, you have to have the perfect lighting and all that stuff. Otherwise only a few specles change. It looks so easy on the website but it is not. If you wanted to get it like I did just to make a few small "productions" such as and have little to no budget THIS IS NOT FOR YOU. I tried to use it for a school project and it is a total waste of time and money. I tried for an hour to get the right lighting but it never worked. This one is way more confusing then the first one also. This software is not worth the money. Sure some things are good on it, but if you want to use the chroma key and you are not good with lighting such as myself, I really feel this product is not for you

1-0 out of 5 stars The 2nd worst software package I have ever experienced
I have a lot of experience with computers as a physicist. However, I have not been able to install this package without error massages showing up after having tried different ways for 8 days. My three emails sent to Rixio got only one very slow response, which was not helpful at all. After that, no one there responsed my emails. It seems the support team does not exist any more.

I now have the software installed on my PC by ignoring the error massages and tested it. I have used several video editing packages and DVD authorizing packages. The VideoWave is strong on simple video editing but extremely weak on DVD authorizing. There is a bug for the audio mixer for the video editing section. The program freezes when you click the audio mixer button. I am nto sure this is due to the bad installation or not. For DVD authorizing section, a fatal problem is that different mpeg files can not be included as chapters under a title, but only as different titles. This means you can not have the generated DVD play as a continuous movie. The main menu will show up whenever a title was completed. Then you need to manually choose another title to play. In order to avoid this problem. One may go back to the video editing section to have the movie files merged into one file (takes a lot of time). Doing so, you will find it would be very difficult to have your movie with optimized file size to fit in your DVD disc. This problem should not happen if designer of the overall configuration of this package ever generate a single DVD movie himself. Roxio should learn how to make a DVD athorizing section from the Sonic MyDVD package or DVD Complete from Dazzale, though the later does not support DVD+R.

Besides, the transcoding procedure of Video WAve is almost 2-3 times slower than that of Sonic MyDVD package, which makes the DVD burning painfully long.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please do not waste your time...
I can't explain in polite terms just how much I loathe this product. Like others, I have installed, run clean ups, and reinstalled it numerous times. The customer support is expensive ($35/incident and only good for 30 days from the date you call) AND the call is INTERNATIONAL (to Toronto), so your pocketbook is hit twice for the 'support'. The bottom line issue, for me, which is not resolvable is that Roxio products do not 'get along well' with Adobe products so if you have both in your system you will most likely end up with DVD burning issues in your Roxio AND Adobe software (I believe that most people whose hobbies include video and still photography have at least one Adobe software product in their system). And my non-resolvable issue was only determined as a final note after having 'fixed' all the many other problems I encountered, with my paid tech support and a hefty international long distance bill (I really wanted this product to work). I had capturing, audio, burning, copying, and crashing issues. My goal was simply to create home DVDs of my new daughter for my friends and family. If this is your goal and you value the little free time that you have during the day, please don't waste it on this product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Are these reviews for real ?????
Who is fooling who. Compare the review dated July 29, 2003 (1 star)with the short review dated Jan 14, 2003 (5 stars). Copy and paste right down to the word "to" sic for "too."

2-0 out of 5 stars Not BAD but I'd recommend trying something different
Some reviewer said "Easy to use interface, well balanced features, and stability stability stability... Formerly MGA, now Roxio (that's to bad)." What a load - probably from the Roxio company. I have the program and while I haven't had as many problems running it as some of the other people who have reviewed this software, this is anything but stabile. It's basic and a few of the features would not work no matter what was done. This is for the beginner and depending on what your intended output is, this could be great or it could be a real pain (i.e. simple mpeg movies - great. DVD or web - a REAL pain).

Don't part with your money if you expect too much but I still use this depending on what kind of an output I'm looking for. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars DUD
Wow, this software sounded so cool, all the stuff it could do, the waveform/vectorscope, the chroma/lumenence keys, you can create bars and tone just like that. All that stuff is great but the real meat and potatoes of editing quickly is just not there. The basic triming of clips is almost non-existent, one cannot view a clip in the bin without putting it in the timeline first, even Pinnacle Studio products do that. What happened to audio waveforms and rubber bands, No audio mixer either? I have found that the basics of quickly cutting clips together in a reasonably accurate fashion is laborious and tedious with Lets Edit. Also, the effects wont preview without hitting cntrl to load into Ram just like on Premiere 6.0, how annoying. I have got a PIII 1gig with 512 ram not a 486. I love all of the special stuff this software does, but I think I will need to use it as a post rough cut tool for chroma key, checking levels on the scopes etc. I should just buck up and shell out the dough for Premiere Pro, I downloaded a trial version and it worked great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent program for the price
This program fits perfectly in the middle. It's not as detailed as Adobe Premiere, but it's far more complex then most of the editing programs you'll find in the stores. It's designed for the advanced beginner who is past the simple programs, but not quite ready for the expensive complicated programs such as Premiere.

I've only been using it for a week, but I was immediatley able to edit a 2 min music video. Almost everythinig is very obvious and easy to use, though the more complex features do take a bit of time to figure out.

The tech support is also quite good. It may take a day or two for them to email you back, but when they do, their answer is usually helpful. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better entry level programs
This exceeded my expectations. The two things I like most are easy editing functions and the ability to create high quality menus for DVDs. My only complaint is that there is a limit on the size of the files you can capture, ie. capturing a 4hr extended play home video. The program does capture the footage, gives several error/warning messages and the sound on the footage is lost. I will continue to use to transfer purchased VHS to DVD. Good program/value to get started with.

1-0 out of 5 stars I do NOT recommend this software
Trying to burn imported files to SVCD. Every single one had a spot where the video went bad momentarily then audio and video were out of sync. You cannot burn a file without running thru their encoder first and I could never get a good output file. Their tech support told me to update my VIDEO CARD drivers and windows media PLAYER codecs. Then they told me they wouldn't help me because I didn't meet the minimum sys requirements because I had integrated sound device instead of a separate sound card which has nothing to do with the problem. I asked for a refund and was told that I agreed to their license when I installed the software so I guess I got taken. My advice, by something else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Would be cool if it actually worked
I have never been able to do anything with this program without it locking up. Nothing at all. I have contacted customer service several times and they are no help at all (such useless suggestions as "try reinstalling the program"). My computer exceeds all of the minimum requirements and has had no problems with other burning software. It looks like it has some really nice features, IF they worked. I exchanged the original program at the store and the second one does the exact same thing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product!
I teach Graphic Communications and Printing Technology at the Center for Arts & Technology in Phoenixville, PA. I am currently working on a presentation for the International Graphic Arts Education Association and will be featuring your product in my presentation. As more and more teachers in my building see what I'm capable of doing with your tool, I have no doubt that they too will be ordering your product quickly just like I recently did. I'm also helping one of my students develop an introductory level class on CD and it's been a great learning experience for both of us. He is learning just how difficult it can be to create a learning module for a beginning student and I'm finding out just how much he knows about his computer which is quite a bit I'm happy to say. ScreenRecord is a great advancement for hands-on education like this.

2-0 out of 5 stars This product could be very good, with a few changes...
I bought a CDROM training disk on ebay called "Mastering Flash MX Professional 2004" by BDG Publishing Inc. which includes instruction for Flash 5, Flash MX and Flash 2004 professional on it, even though the cover does not show it.

To use this program you will have three windows up on your computer monitor at the same one. One will be Flash, the second for the video from the training program and the third the control box used to control the start and stop or navigation of the training CDROM. I have a rectangular 17 inch LCD screen and find the windows large enough for me, but if you had a small LCD screen, especially if square, I can see where it could be difficult to see well enough due to way you have to make each window so small to fit both the Flash and the training windows up at the same time.

Although the publisher of this training program claims it to be a comprehensive introduction to Flash MX that part of the training program appears to be nothing but hacked up portions of an earlier produced Flash MX training program which is missing all of the basic orientation needed to start using flash, spotty with their explainatoin of some tools and no mention of others. Next, the program goes strait into telling you to do things which have not been covered yet with no explaination of how to do them. If your buying this disk to learn Flash MX forget it, they just threw some stuff in together to give a few instructions which section to section does not have any kind of flow and far from being even a basic outline of the program. I'm only a newbie to flash and can clearly see how poorly that portion of the training disk was handled and find it difficult to believe a company would produce such a poor excuse for a Flash MX training CDROM.

This disk appears to be much better for Flash MX 2004 Pro., but when I tried using the Mastering Flash MX 2004 professional portion of this disk every time the guy tells you to click on a tool or menue the audio stops for a long time until you click "next" in the control box so that you can hear more. What I have found happens every time they ask me to select one of the drop down menues the audio instructions have stopped each and every time without telling me what to do next, so then I have to go over to the control panel for the CDROM and click "next" to get the rest of the instructions of what he wants you to select in that menu. However, each time you jump back and forth between the control box to click next and flash (both set up on the same screen) you have then just deselected Flash and the drop down menu you have just selected snaps back and closes. Because of this I often find myself having to use the "back" button to hear what he said again. What they should be doing is telling you to click on a menu item then pause their speaking for long enough for you to do it and THEN tell you want they want you to select in that menu without having to click "next" after each sentence and the resulting de-selection of the drop down menu.

The Flash MX 2004 Pro. portion of this program seems ok, but I find it needs some polishing so that the user won't get so frustrated with the way they give you tiny little bits of instruction to tell you to open the menu, but does not tell you what you need to select in that menue until you cick "next" to continue. I understand they have tried to make this program as newbie friendly as possible so that even the slowest person can have enough time to see what they need to do, but telling you to click on a menue and then stopping the audio and requiring you to click "next" again (unless your willing to wait for an extremely long period time for the program to time out and continue talking) to hear what they want you to click on in that drop down menue is taking it way too far, to the point of making what could be a good product poor.

One last design problem with the program. The control for the CDROM where you have buttons for Back, Next and Last have the buttons all far too small and close together in a row. The "next" and "last" buttons are right next to one another and I have accidentally clicked on "last" more than once when trying to select next and found it will take you to the end of the training program which you then cannot back out of to get back where you should be, requiring a restart of the training section and navigation to get back to where you last were. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Its friendly software for the beginners
I have tried adobe premiere but its to complicated and the price its expensive. When I tried the Video studio 7, its so impress me. Easy to used event for the beginner. Its lot of feature also although it is the few additional video clips but you will satisfy to used that. You can make dubbing your vice or music with this video, edit your screenplay, add the text with 3D motion, add special effect and lot of feature with the simple click. When you finish your editing you just click share button and you have able to save your project to DVD, VCD or event in your miniDV format. It's wonderful for the beginner event for professional's video editor.

To have the fastest editing process ypu need Pentium IV/ 2.4 Ghz, 512 Mb memory, 128 Mb Video card memory, at least 40 Gb Hard disk and I' Link Card to connect your camcorder to your PC.

You will enjoy your family video with this software

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the Home User
I have been using Ulead Video Studio 6 for over a year for editing my videos and preparing them for burning to DVD, and it has given me 95% satisfaction, so I recently upgraded to 7.

For video editing software under $100, I don't think you can beat UVS7. I agree that it does take some getting used to, but if you're not in a rush to do a perfect production the day you get it, and allow yourself some tinkering time, you'll see that it works and works well.

Mine has never dropped a frame during capture, which itself is worth a lot. The edit "flow" is natural and very flexible -- but, again, I agree that it takes some getting used to. And the quality of the final video or disk is very nice, which is what it's all about.

Personally, I think it could use more choices for title animations, which, right now, is the only negative thing I can say about it.

If you get the download version, be sure to go back and get the 7.01 patch and the "extra content," which is many more effects and filters. You'll be cheating yourself if you don't.

Again, I don't think a home digital video buff can find better software for this price.

4-0 out of 5 stars EASY TO USE product
Great price and easy to use. It comes with a tutorial disc that teaches you visually how to use this product. So anyone who says they are "baffled" must not have used this disc. Bottom line, its an easy product to use. It's not going to give you something that resembles what you see on TV, with all the great special effects you might see in a commercial, movie, or TV program, but for what its designed to do - create home DVD's - this product works great. I created a 45 DVD on my nephew's first 5 years of life, added music, such as the theme to "Superman" and "Ghostbusters" (when showing clips from Halloweens of the past), along with graphics, and worth while transition effects. My family loved it. If you are looking for software to enhance your home movies, one word of warning however - you need to ensure you have a computer capable of handling this or any of these types of product. I have a very compatible computer (3.2 ghz, 200 gig, 512 mb ram, etc.) so I have no problem using this product. Lets put it this way, you computer might be in need of some costly upgrades if its older than 3 years and you want to use this product.

Bottom line, I really like this product a lot and its very easy to use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Steep learning curve
I agree with other reviews here that this is about the best under $100 package for editing video. I've had my quibbles in the past with Ulead over their customer support, and I can't say if that's better now. It's been years since I called them (I stopped buying their software, essentially). But this software runs without freezing my PC, it works well, and it's got most of the bells and whistles.

The only thing I'll warn you about is that this is definitely not an intuitive process (editing video, that is). Or maybe it's just me. However, you really need to get in there and start fooling around with this software to see what it can and can't do. With a single video track, you're going to have to leanr how to use their overlay track if you want to make your videos look professional. It's a steep learning curve for the novice, but once you play with this for a while, the curve with flatten out considerable...

A quick tip I found helpful -- the voice and music tracks will both work for MP3's, so you can use both tracks and cross fade your music for those long nature videos you like to make.

All in all, I'd recommend this software, although I'd also recommend you pick up a book or two on video editing...

5-0 out of 5 stars Works for me
I started with Roxio software that came with my TDK DVD burner. It worked fine, but it didn't seem to have the flexibility I wanted for high quality in and output. So I picked up VideoStudo 7 [...]. I might add that you can download a fully funcional trial version if you like. I did, and it worked fine. I used it while waiting for my [...] order to arrive. Of course, it's large, so only do it if you have high speed DSL.

I have had no difficulty with it. I had the fairly humble goal of transfering my family movies from tape before they deteriorated. I've archived two family movies already, transfering them through our Sony Digital8 TRV120 camera. The first DVD I did was originally filmed on the digital camera, and the quality was excellent. I ran everything at maximum quality, minimum compression. On the second, I copied an older tape originally filmed on an analog Sony 8 mm camera. The quality again was good--no loss from the tape itself, I don't think. Imagine the relief of getting those memories preserved--now copied multiple times and archived in safe places.

As you can tell, I am no expert on these things. I figure if you have good hardware and are reasonably smart, the rest should be easy. It was. The software is fairly intuitive. I only checked the manual a couple of times for reference. If your system is powerful enough and you have the patience to play with it, you should be fine. It hung up on me once or twice, but only when I tried to ask it to do something stupid in the middle of another function. I can't say it has ever acted weird on me when I have not acted weird on it.

I'm using a Dell 600 notebook with 1 Gig of RAM and a 1.4 Pentium processor. I have 40 Gig of space on my D drive, but I also got an extra 80 Gig external drive. I think you'll find ample hard drive space and plenty of RAM to both be important. I really wouldn't want to play with this at the minimum specs the software claims. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great software
After searching forever for software that i could use to copy photos and videos so i could watch them on my dvd player i came across this excellent software. After a little trial and error i got it to work perfect""It plays videos and makes slideshows very well.I could not be happier.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sounds good on paper
I purchase this program hoping I can put together a photo slideshow as a farewell present for a coworker and also as a slideshow gift for my niece. I tried the trial version first. It has very easy menus and I was able to create my first slideshow in 20 minutes. It worked great in my home DVD. I decided to purchase the program the next day. After finalizing the DVD I decided to try out the slideshow at work. It didn't work in two DVD's at my work place. I tried at two other people DVD's, still nothing. I went back and I tried different setup menus. After wasting more than 25 CD's I decided to call the company. The technical support recommendation: purchase a similar DVD so my niece can play the slideshow!!!!! What a waste of time and money!! The program sounds good on paper, does not deliver. Don't waste your money! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Neverending story of frustration.
I've bought this product expecting that if I have already encoded file in Mpeg-2 it will be easy to create simple menu for my own home video, according all information I discovered from Pinnacle web site. But, unfortuanately, you cannot create a DVD, which will fit to 4.7 Gb blank. If you try to create a DVD from avi file it may take forever (couple of hours) just to create a DVD files. Final quality is really bad, you will have 700 Mb or ever more of free space left on your blank disc, but the "Expression" will show you that there's no space left.

One time it created a DVD with for me where the total size of all files was about 1 Gb, but program showed that there was no space left!

The program is really unstable, as all other Pinnacle products.

I have Pinnacle Studio 8 also with the same set of problems:
- poor video quality
- wrong calculation of free space on DVD
- unexpectable slow performance.

If you want DVD authoring software Expression is not the right choice. And I will give you the same advice if you decide to buy Pinnacle Studio. I do not expect from them any improvement in version 9. The most recent reviews just awful.

P.S. If you think that my system is slow, here is draft spec:
p4-2.4 GHz, 1Gb RAM, 7200rpm 120 Gb Hard drive... Yeah, really slow system for Pinnacle.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Thrilled
I had been using Dazzle DVD Complete which provided fairly regular upgrades, and checked their site for an update only to find a Pinnacle webpage offering a $40 upgrade from DVD Complete to Expression. Apparently they have taken Dazzle over and won't be supporting the product. So I ordered it ... me=idiot. Didnt do enough research and found that its the equivalent of "My First DVD Software" There is no way to create a professional looking DVD -which is what I use it for. Its basically for newbies who want to throw old videos of their kids on a DVD and send it to the folks.

That, I admit is my own fault for not further researching, but I am a software junkie and was impulsive. BUT, as far as Pinnacle's marketing it as an upgrade? UPGRADE???? Would you consider going from Photoshop 7.0 to Microsoft Draw an upgrade? Pinnacle obviously would.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very bad experience using it
I usually do not write comments but this time I feel I have to write something about it, because I am really disappointed the Pinnacle Expression. I used it to create a DVD-R using existing well-coded Mpeg2 files, but it is very very slow, regardless in Pentium IV 1.8GHz or Pentium III 600 MHz, two of my PC's. One thing really puzzled me was, in either PC, the CPU usuage was only about 25-30 percent. And the program IS running, not non-responding. No huge I/O activity. No DVD buring activity either. Then why isn't it running faster, to use 100% CPU??? It took one hour, only incrementing from 50% to 52% complete in preparing the DVD contents, not even the burning yet-- a separate process. And then it always errored out at about 70%, "Error to Complie File", something like it. Stupid. I am an IT professional myself. I keep my PC environment simple. There're enough memory and hard disk space in my PC's. There's no registry mess up. If there's anything wrong, it must be the program (I already downlaoded the lastest update from I am very disappoined. It is such a straightforward and simple program yet they don't know how to code it well. ... Read more

With OnDVD you can take digital pictures and turn them into photo albums on CDs that play in your DVD player. Simply select and arrange your photos like an old-fashioned slide show and burn them to a CD.

With OnDVD, you can arrange up to 200 digital pictures in simple storyboard format, then add an audio track. Should some of your photos require cropping, rotation, or even red-eye removal, you can use Dazzle Photo Editor to perfect them. Advanced algorithms tackle tough but common problems such as bad lighting and color imbalance. When you're done, preview the slide show in OnDVD to see how it will look and sound on your TV.

OnDVD's state-of-the-art burning engine works with your CD-R or CD-RW burner to create Video CDs (VCDs) that play on DVD players. And just like saving the original negatives of your photographic prints, OnDVD keeps a copy of each original, high-quality digital photograph on the CD itself. Favorite photos can easily be turned into photographic prints ready to be framed. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Patience, young Padawan...
I got this software free from purchasing a Dazzle 10 in 1 reader/writer.

I do agree with one of the reviewers about requiring patience in using this software. It does work once its quirks are discovered.

1. Slideshow does not advance - I had this issue and I think the cause of this is that the first frame gets inadvertently highlighted before burning the CD. In effect, this makes the frame/picture, the only one viewable. Now, I make it a point that no frame is highlighted before burning the VCD by clicking out of the timeline.

2. 200 picture file limit - When pictures are imported into the project, a physical copy of the picture file is brought over into the project directory. My workaround to ensure that 200 files were actually being used was to actually copy the files physically into the project directory.

3. Writing VCD - After a few coasters which seemed like finished products, I slowed down the write speed on my DVD writer from 16X (max speed of my writer) to 8X. This produced good VCDs that actually play to completion. The coasters do not play to completion and on my DVD player that plays most every format, it just does not play at all which was surprising to me. This hinted that something was amiss with how the VCD was burned.

The downsides of this software:

1. Pictures cannot be moved in blocks when in the timeline. Pictures have to be moved one by one.

2. Auto arrange cannot be applied to a certain block of pictures with respect to audio. It's all or nothing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Does pretty much what you need
I picked this up because I was looking for software to make slideshows on cd that I could play on my dvd player. I have Windows ME and relatively recent DVD players (2 in the house) and it has been working flawlessly.

The software is easy-to-use, I literally installed it and made my first cd in 5 minutes by dragging a dir full of jpgs into it, selecting a mp3 for background music and telling it to "burn". It auto-timed the pictures to end when the song ended.

It uses the VCD style of disk format, where if you look at the disk contents you see a .exe file and a .dll file. So you must have a DVD player capable of reading that type of disk.

When actually playing the cd, it auto-sizes the pictures to full screen and allows the remote control to stop, pause and play. I wish it would have allowed a reverse and fastforward as well and took off one star because it doesn't.

It also doesn't seem to have any ability to group slides into different sets, have an opening menu and jump to a set - although its possible I haven't found that option yet.

All-in-all a pretty cheap and easy to use software that does the basics.

1-0 out of 5 stars High hopes
Initially I thought the editing process was easy to use with the drag and drop timeline and individual picture advancement setting. It also made the addition of audio easy to coordinate with pictures. Preview process always looked great but I could never get the final slideshow to advance on DVD player. It was a waste of time and countless CDs just to try to get a slideshow to work. As far as tech support, the company is non-existent. Get it if you want to be frustrated.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bare bones, patience needed
My wife got this for me last Christmas. I was expecting more and got less. I did get it to work and I did create a VCD format CDR but I would recommend a more powerful program. Some of the drawbacks I found
1) Music can only be MP3 (I had to find a program to convert my WMA's and other formats to MP3)
2) Limit of 200 pictures is actually 100 unless you do some crazy workaround, I don't remember how I FINALLY got it up to 200 (which isn't nearly enough for me to do a year's worth of picrues)
3) The preview mode is cheesy. In order to view the pictures and music together you have to play from the beginning every time, you can not preview from 1/2 way though the presentation.
4) No way to sort and store photos
5) Not everyone's DVD supports the VCD format that this program burns to.
My advice: Get a DVD burner and software to burn DVD format, don't mess with the VCD or SVCD.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ditto on review by Stephen Terrell
His review was dated December of 2002. The exact same situation still exists in July 2003. I got the original bare-bones software with my card reader. I wanted to be able to sort albums easier and according to the info on the box, it was what I wanted. Loaded it and it was the same bare-bones program. In fact, I started looking and found the part number on my old disk matches the part number on the new disk. I do not understand how they can get away with advertising one thing and inserting another. The example screens promised on the box are not the ones on the disk. The instruction manual is the right one for the box but not for the disk they put in the box.

And Stephen is correct again about customer support. Worse than non-existent. They promise the world and deliver nothing.

I will never by any product with this company's name again. ... Read more
