5-0 out of 5 stars Creates Fantastic Digital Artwork
I purchased this software for my family and it has turned out to be one of the best purchases I have ever made. The realism in the effects is unreal, it's as if you are actually painting on paper. You mix colors like you would with a regular paint pallete, and as you paint your color fades when your paint is running out just like in real life. There are also plenty of other mediums as well from crayons to charcoal and much more. It also has plenty of images at your disposal to help withprojects, or to turn into animations.

This software also has 3 differnt levels (basic, junior, advanced) which can be customised. So everyone in my family was able to use it with ease. My Kids have used it for fun, and also for their projects at school. I recommend this software to everyone. ... Read more

It's hard to imagine that Adobe can make Photoshop any better than this. Long considered the professional image-editing standard among graphic digital artists worldwide, Photoshop is certain to cement that reputation even further with the array of new features offered in the Adobe PhotoShop CS 2 Upgrade for the Macintosh. Artists, creative professionals, photographers, and industry professionals will find that the workflow and image customization enhancements will be worth far more than the price of the upgrade.

Achieve amazing results in a fraction of the time with the groundbreaking Vanishing Point tool, which lets you clone, paint, and paste elements that automatically match the perspective of the surrounding image area.
Adobe Bridge (formerly File Browser)
Adobe Bridge software is the new-generation File Browser--Photoshop's navigational control center that allows you to browse, organize, label, and preview graphics and Photoshop files quickly and efficiently. Adobe Bridge takes File Browser, introduced in Photoshop 7.0, a step further by providing centralized access to your suite project files, applications, and settings. With Adobe Bridge, you can process multiple camera raw images at once; resize, rate and label thumbnails; review images in slide show mode; and more. With file organization and sharing, plus Adobe Stock Photos at your fingertips all the time, you simply search for the files you want to place using metadata--such as key words, colors or image resolution--and seamlessly drag and drop your filesinto Photoshop. You can even page through an entire Adobe PDF file right in the preview panel of Adobe Bridge. And with Adobe Bridge, you can also browse, search and purchase royalty-free images from leading stock photo agencies without ever leaving InDesign CS2. It's as simple as that.

Revolutionary Vanishing Point and Image Warp
Photographers especially will be amazed at the effects that Vanishing Point can bring to a project. Clone, paint, and paste elements that automatically match the perspective of the surrounding image area in a fraction of the time that it currently takes. With Image Warp, you can easily create packaging mock-ups or other dimensional effects by wrapping an image around any shape. Place your client's logo around a coffee cup, or stretch, curl or bend an image across the hood of a car or around the Space Shuttle, for that matter. The effects you can create with Image Warp will be limited only by your imagination.

Accelerate your raw file workflow with simultaneous processing of multiple images while you continue working.
Digital Camera Raw File Support
Accelerate your raw file workflow with simultaneous processing of multiple images while you continue working. With Photoshop CS2, you can import images into your choice of formats, including Digital Negative (DNG); enjoy automatic adjustments to exposure, shadows, and brightness and contrast; and much more. This exciting new enhancement provides fast and easy access within Photoshop software to the "raw" image formats produced by many leading professional and mid-range digital cameras. The Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in--now available as part of Photoshop CS2--has been updated to support more cameras and include more features.

Spot Healing Brush and One-Click Red-Eye Correction
Never have touch ups been so easy. With the Spot Healing Brush, you can effortlessly retouch photos--including 16-bit images--in a single click. Red-eye Correction lets you instantly neutralize red eyes and also lets you set pupil size and darkening level.

Effective red-eye reduction is only a few clicks away.

Use the new multi-layer select feature to more intuitively edit and control your work.

Other New Features
Photoshop CS2 offers a huge array of exciting new features designed to help artists and creative professionals in all fields stretch their imagination and increase their work and creative efficiencies:

  • Smart Objects: Perform nondestructive scaling, rotating, and warping of raster and vector graphics with Smart Objects. Even preserve the editability of high-resolution vector data from Adobe Illustrator software.
  • Multiple Layer Control: Select and move, group, transform, and warp objects more intuitively by clicking and dragging directly on the canvas. Easily align objects with Smart Guides.
  • Nondestructive Image Correction: Improve the color, contrast, and dynamic range of any image using a comprehensive set of professional correction tools and nondestructive adjustment layers, which display corrections while preserving the original.
  • Full 16-bit and New 32-bit Image Support: Work with absolute precision thanks to support for 16-bit images in all channels and layers. Create and edit 32-bit images, and take advantage of High Dynamic Range, 32-bit support.
  • Advanced Noise Reduction: Reduce noise and remove JPEG artifacts for cleaner images.
  • Customizable Workspaces and Menus: Get easier access to the tools you need with task-based presets, highlight new or commonly used menu items, and even set up and save custom menus and workspaces.
  • Web Animations: Quickly create dynamic GIF animations directly within Photoshop CS2 by taking advantage of the new Animations palette and layer palette animation options.

5-0 out of 5 stars A low cost solution for Web Developers
I am a professional web designer and have used the Paint Shop Pro line of products for the last six years of my life. I have found this program to be a quick and effective program for producing quality designs. Many people live and swear by Adobe Photoshop in the web design business, but the truth is there is very little that Photoshop can offer you over this product that you will ever use. Expensive software is never a substitution for effort and talent, and there are enough features in PSP7 that you may never discover them all.

The first thing you will notice about this program is that its very intuitive. In fact, the program controls a lot like any other Windows application (as opposed to Photoshop which handles similarly to a MacOS). You can drag and crop boxes as if you were selecting files in Windows. You can just right click and paste pictures from the clipboard with relative easy.

The program has all the essentials for complex web design - layers, a myriad of transparency effects, image splitters, filters, you name it.

If you're looking for a low cost solution and are thinking about getting in the web design business, don't let people talk you out of trying this program (that's right, its got a free 30 day trial version). You'll be glad you did. Still not convinced of the designing power of Paint Shop Pro? Check out some of the site designs that I did.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Graphics Program
Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7.0 is really an essential for anyone interested in creating graphics quickly and easily. It is highly intuitive and it is possible to learn the whole program quickly (in a day or two), which is a lot less time than I spent learning Adobe! There is an animation shop that allows you to create different effects- rotate colors of a graphic, or apply streaming text to a graphic. In the main program, there are textures, multi-colored hues, and solid colors- as well as a wide variety of tools and some tubes (leaves, pinecones, confetti, etc)- to create with. There are effects that you can add- from pencil to glowing edges to rain drops etc. The reason I rated this program four stars: I think that a lot more tubes and effects could have been included for an even better product (thus saving me the time of finding them elsewhere) and I still need Adobe Photo Shop for the really crisp and *precise* photograph/artwork editing. As far as creating graphics- this program is wonderful for a product in its price range, and my top choice. For most, it would be more than enough I think. I really love it and wouldn't be without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful
I first bought the Paint Shop Pro 7, The anniversary Edition and this is the best investment I ever made since I bought my PC... I loved it so much, I had to also try Paint Shop Pro 8... And I love it also... I have both and do everything with my programs from Jasc... I want to say, Keep up the great work here and keep them coming with new ideas... I tried to send the sight for my friend to order The Paint Shop Pro 7 Anniversary Edition, And I see it isn't available anymore? Is it possible to still get it?This is a wonderful program and easy for learning... I wish it was still available to buy... There is so much fun in learning all it can do...
Thanks,

1-0 out of 5 stars clunky and horrible to use
I bought this as I have used the free version for years. The interface is so clunky, it's beyond even trying. There is no option for free hand drawing. And, it doens't remember which directories I've saved vs opened from. I find myself clicking so much between the 2 that I just hate it and it's time consuming. I actually reinstalled the free version and am using that again. Next time, I will buy something else! This was a HUGE waste of money!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Graphics Software!
I have both PSP 7 and Photoshop Elements and I far prefer PSP 7. However, both programs have their limitations, so I do occasionally switch back and forth between the two. I love to make banners in PSP. It's a piece of cake, especially after you figure out how to make your own tubes. Plus, PSP 7 comes with animation shop that alows you to make your own web animations. I have used Adobe Photoshop Deluxe as well (which they replaced with Photoshop Elements), but for making graphics and animations, PSP is far better. However, I do prefer Adobe Photoshop Deluxe (NOT Elements) for photo editing. ... Read more

Now that version 10 of Corel's powerful, popular drawing suite CorelDRAWhas taken hold, one might expect the company to phase out CorelDRAW 9. Instead,Corel has recycled its engine into CorelDRAW Essentials, a powerful pair ofcreation and editing programs available at an attractive, sub-$100 price. Theretail package is generous, with two image-editing programs, a fat and friendlyinstruction manual, tons of clip art, convenient HTML-based documentation, and apair of Osborne/McGraw-Hill guides in PDF format.

The cornerstone of Essentials is CorelDRAW 9, a robust illustration tool. Withits rich interface, users can quickly create simple or complex object-baseddrawings. The extensive tool set contains everything from simple freehand pensand ellipse tools to a versatile Bézier tool, complex fill tools, a texteditor, and more.

Lines and shapes are treated as vector objects, which means they're completelydynamic. CorelDRAW lets the user edit, group, bend, transform, and otherwisemanipulate each object. An object manager makes it easy to keep track of scoresor hundreds of lines, curves, and shapes in even the most complex drawings.

For bitmap editing, the package includes Corel PHOTO-PAINT, which on its ownwould be a commendable program. Its relatively small number of tools (comparedto Photoshop Elements and Paint Shop Pro 7) is highly customizable. PHOTO- PAINT's paint tool, for instance, is so adjustable that users can createvirtually any kind of brush, sprayer, or other applicator they desire.

The program also includes more pedestrian--but still welcome--picture effects.Lens and distortion effects, for instance, let users apply cylindrical, spherical, and other diffusive warps to their images. Users can sharpen andsoften images, adjust colors and gamma, and tweak their pictures in dozens ofother ways. PHOTO-PAINT can even split images into distinct color channels, including CMYK.

CorelDRAW and PHOTO-PAINT are tightly integrated, using their relative strengthsto complement each other, and together they comprise a powerful one-two punch offull-featured image manipulation. Even though there's little feature overlapbetween the two, they share a few welcome conveniences--among them, step-by-stepexporters that allow users to create HTML and PDF files out of theircreations.

With a heaping slab of user friendliness, CorelDRAW Essentials is one of theeasiest drawing programs to master. However, that doesn't mean it's simplistic;folks who can't quite master Windows Paint will find it daunting. Alternately, professional graphics designers, layout artists, and other veterans of thefull-scale CorelDRAW suites will miss certain high-end layout features. Still, ifyou're looking for an affordable, yet sophisticated image-editing package,CorelDRAW Essentials is a good bet. --Joel Durham, Jr. ... Read more

This program has many cool features found in Corel 9.0 and has been especially adapted for us non-professional types that want to draw pictures and/or edit photos on our home computer. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Program
Many people are dissatisfied with this product, but I say it's tough to top. Want to edit images and create graphics *easily* and don't want to spend oodles of dollars for Photoshop, which can cost up to $500+?! Paint Shop Pro is your ticket. You can do everything and more with photos and images. Maybe even more than you'd want to. There's things like red eye removal, specklies removal, filters, and even allowing you to make images look like they've been drawn in pencil, charcoal, and even neon wire. You can also give it an old-newspaper type feel or even a glass mosaic.

It's a wonderfully priced tool for those who aren't experts, but are past the beginner stage.

The help displays are in fact helpful. I'd say it would take a month, if not less, to fully understand how to work this product. You'll have hours of fun playing with all the nifty features! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Image Editing
PSP7 is great for image editing. Very customizable with different tools.

Just a tip: If you use PSP7 it has a problem with shutting down occasionally and all your work is lost. You can remedy this problem by selecting the auto save feature. This way it will save your work as your doing it and if an error occurs for any reason with PSP7 or your computer, your work will still be there. ... Read more

While Adobe Illustrator has traditionally been reserved for the printand prepress marketplace, recent versions have targeted a broader audience, including a growing contingent of new-school Web designers. With the latestincarnation of Illustrator, Adobe aims to please both print and prepressdesigners, as well as cutting-edge Web designer communities. If you're lookingfor a greater Web focus from your vector graphics program, look no further thanIllustrator 10.

For those concerned about Illustrator becoming too Web focused, don't fret. Allof Illustrator's previously existing drawing and text tools remain intact.Version 10 also introduces improved tools for drawing lines, arcs, and grids. These new drawing tools will maximize your productivity and provide an easy wayto create the shapes you want.

In addition to the new drawing tools, Adobe has jumped on the graphics symbolbandwagon by allowing users to save any text object or graphic object as asymbol. Once objects are saved in the Symbol palette, they can be reusedinfinitely, thus providing easier management of files and decreased file size.Users will fall in love with the simple drag-and-drop usability of the symbols, while the newly added Symbol Sprayer lets you easily add multiple instances of asymbol directly into the document.

Adobe has also undertaken the task of minimizing the monotony of tedious andrepetitive design tasks. By taking advantage of Illustrator-supported scriptinglanguages, users can easily automate repetitive tasks by writing scriptsdirectly in Illustrator. Any of the three popular scripting languages--VisualBasic Script, JavaScript, or AppleScript--can be used. When creating a design, users can assign a text object or graphic object to a variable. These variablescan then pull information from any ODBC-compliant database. With this type ofpower, users can easily create templates for documents such as Web pages orproduct catalogs.

In this latest version of Illustrator 10, Adobe has managed to enhance itsexisting drawing tools with powerful productivity aids. By focusing on importantworkflow, productivity, and database-connectivity features, Adobe has given theuser more time to explore new creative possibilities. --Rich Ting ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Sad
The saying, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions" is epitomized in this program. Adobe attempted to add a plethora of tools a designer might want. In fact, I think the program would work great for web design if it weren't so buggy. For print, it's just as bad as 9 was and 9 was VERY BAD.
I tried to use it for a couple weeks, but I had to get some work done so I'm back in 8. I hesitated to buy 10 because 9 was such a bomb, but hope springs eternal; I thought they would surely not release two duds in a row. I will buy 11 just because I hate to be so far behind, but it better be better.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for design, a step back for production
Having been a working user since Illustrator 5.0, I've seen a great deal of changes in this fine design and production program. Adobe was in my opinion at their pinnacle with release 8.0. Version 9 added transparency effect, but it seemed to drag on the OS (9.x), and one huge change that was unnoticed by most designers, put a huge thorn in the side of those working in print or production: Adobe changed their post script management in the exporting of most files to be ripped from post script, to .pdf. This caused a myriad of problems in the rip world, where the "new and improved" format would not rip, or caused serious rip problems, with images needed embedding (doubling or tripling the final file size), or other work arounds. Hence, many of us never used verion 9.0.

Now comes Version 10. This version has the beautiful aqua interface, is much faster than version 9, and a lot of designers will love it for that. Have the problems been fixed? Well, no. As a matter of fact, some are worse. .eps files saved out of 10 as version 8.0 (to hopefully rip better) causes placed files to appear as fragmented, embedded, unnamed, files, causing a total re-design. Files with transparency often rip as solid blocks, or have Pantone colors fall out when used as transparency. While one could argue this is a problem with the rip, it's not the best business ethic to let your customers (production users) have to deal with these hassles, when they should have been ironed out between Adobe and other (rip) software manufacturers. Another feature that appeared in 9.0 is still useless: Automated (batching) actions. Illustrator 10 wants to name every single file the same as the file used in the writing of the action. Making what could be a huge, huge time saver for production works, totally useless. There are also network security issues, where OSX wants to hide AI 10 files when saved to a Windows based server. Adobe also missed the boat in that the save window doesn't allow anything other than the power user window in OSX, and won't allow collumn width adustments. Again, this may all be Apple, (or Windows). But I say iron these issues out before releasing the software and charging users for it, and letting them deal with the headaches.

But before I create a huge laundry list of things wrong with the program, Illustrator does deserve some praise. It's the best looking version to date, that isn't even close. It also makes jumping into basic design easier than ever. And it has many, many web friendly features. Most any designer out there working on basic (or complex) logos, designs and illustrations will find AI 10, for OSX to be the best version to date. So you're likely to see a lot of 5-star reviews from those users.

Bottom line: If you're a designer working in OSX, this is a much faster, and nicer version than 9. But a lot of production workers who use Illustrator day in and day out for print export and rip are going to find the program still has several problems that make it very difficult to use in a production environment.

[I should note that when I say "rip" I am not talking about rasterizing files in Photoshop, but instead using programs such as Cheetah, Color Burst, Autoflo, or Onyx. Industry standards.]

2-0 out of 5 stars even farther of target...
I've been a user since the first beta, and things don't look good for Illustrator. The marketing people have been in charge for way too long, and now it is impossible to tell just what this program is supposed to do! It does nothing well. To this "industry standard" (in EXACTLY the way Lotus 123 was sold as "the indusrtry standard" for the last three useless versions), Adobe continues to add a scattering of confused features and tricks, while ignoring years old problems with Illustrator. At this point, the new 'web' features that started flooding in with version 7 have overwhelmed any sense of planning or design., and have caused no end of problems for its print users. One can use 'transparency features' to create neat drop shadows (not suitable for print work as they force the vector work to pixelate before printing is possible), but one still cannot handle multiple pages, master documents, or even file linking in any but the most rudimentary way. While faster than some past versions, there must be SOME reason that Adobe, the people who invented PostScript, produce the absolute slowest PostScript file creator in the field. The only program slower to write a file is InDesign - also by Adobe.

MacroMedia Freehand stepped way ahead of this product 4 or 5 versions ago and has never looked back. The only real benefit to Illustrator is its excellent ability to interpret and edit many .eps files. But a file converter is hardly worth the price.

Illustrator is NO longer a decent prepress tool, and has not been since version 7. It has such a hodge podge of conflicting and incompatible 'features' that I wonder what it IS suited for.

Unless Adobe gets some focus back to it's software, photoshop and GoLive will be the only decent products they make. (and GoLive was purchased as a good thing - who knows where it will be in a year or two).

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally for MacOs X!!!
I have tried the beta version and am awaiting shipment of the final version. I have used the prior versions and have to say this is a big improvement. Now, if we can get Photoshop and GoLive in MacOs X, I will never have to switch back to classic. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Make No Mistake: Corel is NOT Adobe.
After years of using CorelDraw (versions 5-9) on the Windows platform, suffering with frequent crashes and quirky tool operations, I assumed that the move to Corel 10 for Mac would be pleasant. Unfortunately, it was not.

Corel 10 for Mac is a dreadful program. It is horribly slow. I'm using a 466 G4, so I'm not expecting lighning, but dear God, it is a painful ordeal to try to edit text. There are a number of strange tool problems which reinstalling several times has not solved, even after downloading the 23-megabyte "patch".

-The Caps-Lock key doesn't work in text editing mode.
-The open and import dialogue windows are too small (only a portion of the file names are visible), and attempting to expand them makes the program crash.
-The program envrionment can easily become corrupted, forcing the user to revert to the default envrionment and lose all of their customization.
-The program appears to be unable to deal with white spot colors.
-The "support options" are awful. The only way to get support is by calling a long distance toll number... there is no e-mail support, and the online support database doesn't have a section for the program. By searching, one can find 3 articles about Draw 10 for Mac. I was unable to access the Usenet discussion groups.

There are also problems with arcing text that go back to the earliest versions of Draw I used on the PC. Corel seems more interested in adding new features than fixing problems with old ones.

On the plus side, the customization options are very comprehensive, allowing the user to do whatever they want with the interface... also the program seems to be able to import any kind of file. Sometimes the results are strange, with Illustrator files sometimes having mysterious white outlines around everything...

Overall, if Corel can speed it up and fix some problems, this program would be a pleasure to use, but don't get your hopes up.

5-0 out of 5 stars CorelDraw vs Illustrator
Lightyears ahead Illustrator, Coreldraw came a long way since the first version. Since the hole graphic design industry was based at the time on the MAC, Illustrator became the standard, while Corel got stablished into the Windows plataform.

But now that both plataform got so similar, The truth is that after this unspected shift, Illustrator got so afraid of Corel that they started to pay people to create positive reviews of the software.

Corel was using interactive transparencies, Text envelopes, 3D extrudes & amazing Printing Options while Illustrator was still in dippers. Even more, after so many years of "Illustrator" the program is still incapable of showing Font Previews. It even tried to poorly imitate Corel's Text Envelopes but it does not get even close.

In CorelDraw you have many interactive tools that do the job, while in illustrator you need a many to acomplish the same. This forces you to deal with an interface crowded with useless & unecessary tools, no wonder it was finally recogniced by Macworld as Best of Show at MACExpo.

There are so many features in draw that Illustrator lacks that you'd need a book to enumerate. The only reason the graphic design industry does not like it is just because it comes from windows & they don't like to learn better ways to do the same thing. It's true in the past Corel was unstable but after version 7 the Illustrator got way behind.

The truth is that you can do basicaly anything with any of this programs, the only diference is that with corel you can do it way faster. Besides, you get more for your money, Rave & PhotoPaint, this last two programs do a decent job thou I personally like Flash & Photoshop better. As you can see I' not an Anti-Adobe I just state the obvious.

1-0 out of 5 stars Even Corel doesn't use Corel
A story in an Ottawa newspaper (the Citizen, I believe) recently ran a story that revealed that Corel used Adobe Illustrator to design the packaging for Corel Graphics Suite. And no wonder. The Corel suite is just plain painful to use. A clunky interface, super slow re-draw time and truly wacky text handling make the Corel experience a truly frustrating one. So I, like Corel, will continue to use Adobe. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Painter, the natural-media emulation tool for digital artists, has survived yet another ownership transition and is now up to version 7. The new owner, procreate, seems committed to the software: version 7 includes some important new features, numerous bug fixes, and compatibility with Mac OS X.

Any digital artist worth their salt is at least familiar with Painter. Painter has tools like no other image editing application, and it is capable of imitating watercolor, oil, crayons, markers, and pencil to a remarkable degree. Combined with a graphics tablet, a talented artist might never pick up a physical paintbrush again.

Painter 7 raises the stakes in natural-media emulation. The new Liquid Ink technology emulates thick paint on a surface, and the new watercolor layers are so realistic you'll worry that they'll drip down into your monitor.

Other enhancements include a continuous, variable zoom tool, total compatibility with Photoshop (including the ability to open and save layered PSD files), and perspective grids to act as an aid when drawing freehand objects.

Painter 7 is also OS X native, meaning it takes full advantage of the Aqua interface and opens in OS X without the need to start up Mac Classic OS 9. As of this writing, there are still some issues to be ironed out with Wacom's tablet drivers, which prevent Painter 7 from being pressure-sensitive, but it's still early in the OS X game.

Overall, Painter 7 offers numerous new and improved features, making it more than just a worthwhile upgrade. --Mike Caputo ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 7's cool...I want 8!
I have Procreate Painter Classic and Painter 7...Classic is cool..7 is far better. So many more brushes, nozzles, all kinds of cool stuff...if ya dig digital art..peep Painter 7..I do advise a good strong PC..or MAC.. I use the same PC for this as Photoshop 7, but Painter seems to hang more. I run a WinXP, 1.4 Ghz AMD, 768MB RAM, and I can hang it good..real good..pull the cord from the outlet good :) Maybe a 2.8P4 will run better, or a nice MAC OS-X! overall I give it 5 stars as far as the software goes..the creative possibilitys are endless, it runs good, and you can make killer stuff! It seems to be more professionally biased, so recreational users may want to look at other programs..but it's your $$$ man!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Natural Media software out there!
I have been a regular Painter user for a few years, comming from a traditional background in illustration and animation. So far, Painter 7 has definitly openned up a new creative world for me. The plethora of tools in this software are fantastic, and make a nice compliment to Photoshop. I am yet to see another application that does a better job of emulating natural media. There are some bugs and the interphase could use tightening up, but still this app is a must for any digital artist, graphic designer or CG arsist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant unique program
Overview.

This is a serious program and not for the faint hearted, but has great potential for anyone who needs or wants a program that seems to offer things that are not available in any other program.

Mac and Windows platforms are supported.

Features.

Contains elements of other graphics programs such as Corel Graphics Suite 11, or Adobe's graphics programs, but adds much more.

The learning curve is steep, but if you started using an industry standard program of any sort, you would expect that.

The choices you are offered in the way of colours, brushes, textures, papers, etc is quite staggering.

Layers are supported and importing images and masks from other programs such as Photoshop, saves any alpha channels in the layers. You can then export the masks and selections back to those programs.

The best manual that I have seen come packaged with a program consists of 430 pages of full colour images and detailed descriptions. You may not even need a second manual as you do with most programs of this calibre.

The book consists of 20 sections, and these are very detailed. Also included is a list of keyboard shortcuts on a separate sheet which is very handy. Corel seem to supply these with all their programs and I consider them a great, but simple enhancement to any program.

Some good lessons are included in the two Cd ROMS that come with the package, and there are more lessons online.

Painter 7 is not just for painting as it contains Web features such as slicing images, and creating rollovers, and saving for the Web.

Animation and video are also covered, and with scripting, an effect that you create for one frame of your movie, can be applied to the entire movie. Avi, QuickTime, and animated gif files are all supported. Masking can be applied to entire videos.

Vector drawing tools are supplied and Bezier curves utilised before stroking paths in a variety of ways, not just a straight colour.

All brushes are customizable, and if you own an airbrush stylus for a drawing tablet, then the angle of the airbrush can be replicated on screen. You can still set angles for this manually if using a mouse though.

Not only the brushes, but just about everything you use in this program allows customising, so you don't have to use any of the presets if you don't want.

Creating your own brushes and dabs and colour profiles are just part of the enhancements.

This version also introduces new Water Colour Technology, Enhanced Colour Management allows changing from CMYK to RGB and back again without too much change in colour.

Text is easy to use and manipulate and alter, and curved text, blends and surface textures are all supported and can be altered individually on their separate layers.

Description.

Painter 7 is a painting program, not a paint program like Photoshop and Corel PHOTO PAINT, which are bitmap image manipulation programs, and is not just a vector based drawing program like Corel DRAW! or Illustrator either. It combines elements of these, then goes in a different direction, thus creating it's own niche.

Water colours are incredibly realistic, as are oils and inks, and brush strokes which can be altered as you use them give a virtual artist's studio on your computer.

Bottom Line.

For an artist, this program offers the ability to paint or draw in any medium, on any common surface texture, using either a mouse or graphics tablet. It gives real-time effects such as moisture penetration that you would get if using standard paints, brushes, pastels etc.

For an artist, I would definitely recommend looking at this as a means of mixing skills that have been picked up and adapted from other graphics programs, even if this is not quite like any other high end computer program.

There doesn't seem much that you can't do with this program in a two dimensional sense, apart from creating .swf files. What it does do is really great though. Added to other top end commercial graphics programs you can do wonderful things.

5-0 out of 5 stars Painting My Life Away
This is one incredible program! The best way to describe it is that it's an entire art studio (plus a photo editor and web publisher) on a disc. From chalk and crayon to paint and even water color (!) this program handles it all. I've been amazed with the high quality images I've been able to create. The dregee of subtlty I'm able to achieve when blending and smearing is incredible. I've already posted some things on the web and have just foud out that the program also lets you create basic animation! These animations can be created in the frame rate of your choosing and be exported as Quicktime,AVI (windows only) or GIFs for posting on the web. That's taking things to the next level!

Professional and serious artists will get the most out of this software since it follows many of the same rules that apply to using actual paints and papers (watercolors run and require 'drying' time). But other users should be able to pick up the basic techniques and be able to create some terrific art. The interface with OS X is easy on the eyes and very responsive. If your looking for the best painting program available, well your search has ended. The possibilities are as limitless as your imagination.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best I've used.
I have used many products, from straight editors like TextPad and NoteTab to Cold Fusion Studio and Microsoft FrontPage. I have their strengths and weaknesses. I personally prefer Macromedia for it's suite approach of tying the products together for high powered web development. I especially use Dreamweaver and Fireowrks extensively together. Dreamweaver also can handle ASP, JSP, PHP and ColdFusion development.

Then you also get Flash, Freehand and ColdFusion Developer to boot.

Tell me another that works with all and has all the powerful tools that Macromedia has and I will definitely be interested!
Buy it before December 31, 2002, as it goes up after that. It's now... on Macromedia's site and about... at Amazon after rebates. It's a great investment.

There's also a cheaper Macomedia web design product out there now called Contribute. I paid an introductory $99 to check it out for my daughter who is also starting to build web pages at 6 years old. So far it seems easy to use for people who don't want to get into the coding side of things.

The Macomedia Studio MX suite is definitely the way to go if you have the money. It's well worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Value for your money
Ok first thing I want to say, I do not work for Macromedia, and my only motivation in writing this, is to help you. This is THE best suite to design, code, and publish a very cool, engaging website. I do not know of any other software package that comes close. In my opinion Adobe tried and failed, (plus it costs a ton), Bill Gates crew is not even in the same game. The only challenge is the learning curve you will encounter, if you are not familiar with Macromedia's products. Now this may be a little presumptuous on my part, but I would go so far as to say if you are not using Dreamweaver and flash, you are not in the web development game seriously. I would guess that some of your efforts might have ended up on "Webpage's that [stink]" website. This is a tremendous value and you could make a career out of mastering anyone of the applications included in Macromedia Studio.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bogus software
I received CD-ROM that was not a used one as advertised, but a copy. Before trying to load it, I went to Macromedia's website to check the serial number and found that Macromedia didn't accept the number as valid. No response from customer service after one week of sending an email request for a refund.

5-0 out of 5 stars I switched from the other one
Yep there comes a time in one's life when they just have to give up on tools that are more trouble than doing it by hand. Yep I tried the other one to find that you had to by 'Publisher just to get it to the site. Then you find that they site has to be dedicated enough to have half the cone on it just to support what you cave composed. Well enough is enough.
Now this here Studio MX animal is great. Moet of the functions are contained in the product its self and very little support is needed by the web site provider. With the split screen you can get closer to the code. I wish there were more beginning templates but there is sufficient quantity to get you off the ground. The transfer of information from and to different sites is amazingly simple. I will not go into the details of all the marvelous cross-product integration and leading design tools just to say that if you can think about it, it is here.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
If you are a professional web designer, this is a must have. If you are a home user and want to design a personal site, this program will make it a lot easier than any other program.

It may look more confusing than Frontpage - but you have to get into it to see that it's actually much easier and offers so much more.

You also won't have "front-page" extension issues with the hosting companies. ... Read more

The 10th edition of anything is certainly a milestone, and in thesoftware industry, version 10 is seen about as often as a UFO. CorelDRAW 10marks Corel's foray into the world of software legends. Corel has taken thismilestone with grand aplomb, packaging a stellar collection of graphicsutilities that will stand the test of time, of course until CorelDRAW 20 isreleased.

The package consists of two old hats, CorelDRAW and Corel Photo-Paint, updatedwith new features and a unified interface. Included as well is Corel R.A.V.E, avector-based animation suite that can create streaming Flash animations forinteractive, high-impact Web content. Throw it all together with more fonts, photos, and clip-art than you can shake a digital stick at (over 30,000), andyou've got an unbeatable graphics powerhouse that will help you tackle any printor online need.

All three applications in the CorelDRAW 10 suite now share the same interfaceelements, including toolbars, option palettes, and filters. Tools you use inCorelDRAW are likely to be the same as tools you use in Photo-Paint or R.A.V.E.Techniques you hone in one environment can be instantly applied to another, making it much easier to perform a wider variety of tasks.

CorelDRAW 10 offers unparalleled control over previously daunting tools. Evencomplex tasks such as extruding a two-dimensional object into three dimensions,or applying mesh-based and multiple-step gradient fills have been streamlined asinteractive tools. With R.A.V.E., Corel not only provides a powerfulvector-based animation program, but one with a customizable interface and componentmechanism that allows the importing and exporting of many formats, including thepopular Macromedia Flash movie format. Photo-Paint allows spectacular controlover almost any aspect of photo manipulation. In addition to hundreds oftemplates for family photos, greeting cards, Web pages, and slide shows,Photo-Paint offers friendly and succinct controls for advanced photo-editing tools, such as dust and scratch removal, hue and tint corrections, red-eye reduction, and many incredible high-quality special effects.

Altogether, this suite of applications allows the user to harness the combinedpower of three stellar programs to create interactive or static art, Web pages, slide shows, printed brochures, photo albums, greeting cards, and much more. 5-0 out of 5 stars CorelDRAW! 10 just rocks!
Corel 10 is the best thing to come along since....well....since Corel 8! :-)

There are a lot of great new features and it's really stable (but still watch out for the patches later on). I especially like the fact that you can publish Flash files and PDF's with ease. And so many people thought that RAVE was going to be an upgrade of the old CorelMOVE, but it's not. They've really created it from the ground up and made a great program for creating animated graphics for the web!

As usual, Corel throws in everything PLUS the kitchen sink. For anyone who is interested in a well-rounded, inexpensive, professional publishing package this is it!! It includes a top-notch vector graphics package (DRAW), a raster (bitmap, photo, etc..) based package (PhotoPaint -- which is as good as Adobe Photoshop), an animated graphics package (RAVE) and a variety of other useful tools for use in image tracing, media management and more.

You would have to spend a couple thousand dollars on other programs to come close to what this suite includes in ONE package! This is a defenite MUST BUY!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Corel VS. Adobe
I work with Corel Draw since verson 4, and it has steadily improved ever since!

RAVE ----------------------- When I heard about version 10 I was excited and couldn't wait to get it, especially RAVE. Since I work with Flash 4 and 5 and don't like the interface, I had to have a look at RAVE, which produces Flash, and it was suberb! Soomth, simple interface, fast outputs and errorfree exports. Awesome!

Photopaint ---------------------------- I am laso using Photoshop 5 and got rid of Corel's Photopaint earlier this year - why? Because it's not worth it. The quality of Photopaint is so poor and it is totally useless because the grids and the rulers are no help to produce webgraphic slices and mouseOnOver effects. Photoshop is the only program I use to make web graphics and it is perfect! I do not like Photopaint, because the output quality is totally discouraging and the typography is so terrible I once had to throw away all my graphics. I then did the whole work again with Photoshop and it was perfect!

Draw ---------------------- Corel 9 was somewhat my favorite so far, because coming to a useful graphics was very simple, because of the redesign. Corel 10 has a new interface and it is even easier to drop shadows and alter shades and forms.

All in all it is ver ystable and a little faster than 9. If you used Corel 9 intensively and need suberb vector graphics for printing and desktop publishing, go for it. But forget Photopaint. RAVE is definitely an alternative to Macromedia's, thoughit does not offer command-line ActionScript and is not as complex as Macromedia's Flash program, it can produce simple animations easily.

1-0 out of 5 stars dont bother
This is the worst vector based program I have ever used. The designers of this software should be ashamed of themselves. Do not buy this program.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'd say-not bad at all
I really liked it but there are some things that I cannot get. In PSP you can color the image digitally, but here I just can't get how! (please consider the fact that I didn't read the instructions) I really think it's worth it(;

5-0 out of 5 stars COREL IS THE ONLY TOOL
......here is the deal. What takes 2 hours in Illustrator/Quark and Photoshop can be done in 10 minutes in CorelDraw. Just because it's capibility enhanced Corel 10 has improved its colour issues in this version and now IS the best overall illustration/layout tool in the business of Graphic Design. It took Adobe and Macromedia 5 years to catch up to the technology... ...

Read more

Back in the day, this grafx biz we're in used to be easier. You knew your target medium (paper or film), artwork could be massaged, and--dammit-deadlines were reasonable. Now you better be able to rebuild and repurpose overnight! At last Adobe has brought to Illustrator some of the things the Macromedia people have been jeering at the lack of for so long. Key functionality like being able to reslice around that new layout, combine and modify vector and raster grafx, CSS, FLASH format support(!!!!)...on and on.

You may not have the [money] for this upgrade right now. If in that case, pull Mama out of the home for a month or two, and use the money to buy this upgrade, especially if you do a lot of multiformat work. Now that this functionality is available in Illustrator, you have virtually full round trip between your Mmedia and Adobe packages. Not everything works the way you'd intuitively guess, and some web things are still easier in Fireworks, but the longer you forgo this, the more those baggy-pants youngsters are going to be eating your clients's lunch, or--more likely-- eating lunch with your clients. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful background/foreground removal tool
KnockOut 2 is a masking plug-in for graphics programs such as Corel PaintShop Pro, Painter7, Photoshop, etc, and not a stand alone program, but it has a lot of power.

Masks enable you to cut out backgrounds or foregrounds using alpha channels. Don't worry about understanding these, as KnockOut 2 does it all for you. Even having the ability to knock out background from areas that still have opacity, such as dragonfly wings, water, clouds, glass, and hair.

Hair is always tricky when you want to change a background, but not with this program. Just drawing a line is as hard as it gets, with a little more for extra fine work. These masks can be saved and loaded into graphics programs for further work. such as making selections from them.

The simple user interface is easy to learn, and keyboard shortcuts are included in the booklet, and on the quick reference card supplied.

You can apply as much or as little feathering on the fly as is needed, and use the touch-up tools such as touchup brush and eraser as they are required. It is even possible to preview the saved part of the image against the proposed backdrop so that any problems can be resolved before exiting the program.

You work on a separate duplicate layer like an adjustment layer, so the background (original) one is always maintained.

Once you have done the tutorials that are provided in the form of a booklet, or in HTML format from the CDrom, you should have no more trouble, and the results are brilliant. More tutorials are to be found on-line just to finish off the training.

Just because it is a plug-in does not mean that KnockOut 2 is not worthy of consideration by serious graphics users, it just speeds up work that can take hours to get right otherwise. I think that it should be part of every professional photo re-toucher's toolbox.

3-0 out of 5 stars Works, but it is a lot of work
It took a couple of weeks before I was able to use this product due to a strange design flaw (bug? feature?). If you load it on a Windows machine that does not have a "C:\" drive it will report "system contains low memory" and not run. This little feature is not covered in the manual or revealed by tech support. Fortunately, I found the answer in a newsgroup. I have reported it to Corel (Procreate) and hope they will at least note it on future manuals (or fix it). I named one of my drives "C" and loaded it there.

Now that it runs I find it does an excellent job on fuzzy edged things if you select and tweak and tweak, but for most product work the Photoshop pen tool works faster. I will keep it and use it occasionally. It would be good for manipulated portrait work. ... Read more

The CorelDRAW Graphics Suite combines three heavyweight graphics tools--CorelDRAW 11, Photo-Paint 11, and R.A.V.E. 2--which can be used individually or together. Now in version 11, the CorelDRAW Suite shows Corel still has plenty of ideas on how to improve the effectiveness and ease-of-use of these major applications.

For example, in CorelDRAW there are now new "three-point" tools for drawing rectangles, ellipses, and curves. With each, you click to fix the first point, stretch out to define an axis or baseline, and click again to complete the object. The new Polyline tool enables you to create lines and objects segment by segment, where each segment can be straight or curved. The Pen tool offers a quick way to create Bezier curves.

CorelDRAW 11 introduces Symbols to its repertoire, too, so you can save and reuse drawing elements in a clip-board-style library. Using symbols saves considerable file space, which can be particularly important when drawing Web graphics.

Corel Photo-Paint 11 is to bitmap editing what CorelDRAW is to vector drawing. In many ways a competitor to Adobe Photoshop, the new version of Photo-Paint includes more improvements for Web artists. You can now slice images into a number of small parts to aid quick downloads and create rollovers for buttons and image maps, so they appear differently when pointed to or clicked. The program also supports JPEG 2000 files, so you can save your images in this new high-compression format.

The Cut-out masking tool helps extract foreground images from picture files and create objects from them that you can incorporate into other pictures. While not as comprehensive as Corel's own stand-alone KnockOut product, it's a useful tool in its own right. Red-eye removal from portrait photos can be a nuisance, but the new red-eye removal tool replaces red pixels with their greyscale equivalents. Various other effects within Photo-Paint add to its usefulness--things like enhanced lens flare, improved bevels, and reworked image stitching for panoramic photos.

The third part of the suite is Corel R.A.V.E., a Macromedia Flash animation creator. This module now uses a very similar interface to CorelDRAW and incorporates most of the same tools. It also offers tools and effects specific to its animation role, such as tweening of text on a path and of the program's predefined library objects, Perfect Shapes. Export of graphics to Macromedia Flash has been improved and includes the ability to export text as text rather than curves, which saves considerable file space.

Overall, the latest version of Corel Graphics Suite shows the company has once again proven itself to be a real player in the graphic design space. --Simon Williams ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast and Powerful
Corel Graphics Suite 11 is by far the best product for illustration and digital imaging that I have used yet. These full featured applications are powerful and robust enough to allow graphics professionals to be as creative as they need without being bogged down with hidden commands, or unfriendly tools. The user interface is intuitive and smart giving creative flexibility and yet is not overwhelming to new users.

This new version of Graphics Suite has many new features that allow the graphic artist to go the extra mile in their design, and I have found that power and ease of the applications allows me to be far more productive then with competing products.

If you are new to Corel you will enjoy how easy it can be to use these applications. You will also enjoy the ability to make many different types of graphics, such as vector and raster images as well as fully interactive Flash animations.

If you are already familiar with Corel you will appreciate the new features and the added power that Corel has put into these applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars great price upgrade from corel8
Wow! What a great price [$$$] after rebate. I was relieved to learn upgrade from corel 8 was ok. In fact I didn't even have the serial# because it was long lost. I called customer support. After giving me the serial# to load the Corel suite 11 asked me to fax or email a picture of my Corel Draw 8 disk. Although the box seems to say version8 or higher, I got the impression proof of any Corel draw version was OK to upgrade from. I was satisfied with Corel 8 but It was giving me problems after upgrading from pIII450 win98 to new P4 3gig winxp pro. My print options were all Greek and program crashed (Locked up) often. It seemed logical to just upgrade to version 11. I have had none of the old problems so far. I will enjoy some of the new features but really feel the money well spent just to have the same features solid and reliable. Corel is the best program available for the money. Especially for someone like me who has the wide range of graphic needs. That is to say the paint/photo graphic needs to the high tolerance Corel draw cadd options. I really use the ability to work in full scale and print tiled pages on banner paper. Although I rarely print longer than six feet before concern the printer paper will go out of alignment. If you don't have a previous version of Corel draw to upgrade from you may want to buy corel8 for [$$$].

3-0 out of 5 stars The song remains the same
In the last ten years I've purchased Corel 3,4,5,6,and 7. I distinctly remember every version being slow and buggy. You'd buy the software and then have to phone Corel until they'd agree to send you software patches to fix the problems. But since there were never any complete solutions, I kept upgrading to newer versions, hoping maybe eventually, they would work out all the problems.
I lost my hope around corel 7, but recently decided to upgrade again. After all, they've had at least 5 years to design better, faster routines. Guess what - Corel 11 is even slower than Corel 7. Now it seems to be popular these days to blame all speed problems on insufficient RAM. But I don't buy it. Corel 11 is really not that much different than Corel 7, and I think 5 years of development should give massive speed improvements. I also think that it is very arrogant for software developers to build their systems a way that forces the end user to upgrade his computer.
The other issue of bugginess is also still with us. Immediately after getting the software, I was informed that I should get the servicepak in order to overcome some of the bugs.
The entire thing is an exact replay of my experience ten years ago.
Don't get me wrong, I really like the software - otherwise I wouldn't have upgraded so many times. But the software should be perfect before the company ships it and ... get ready to laugh at me ... the software should be capable of running quickly on a DX-100 486 with 32 megs of Ram under Win95. That was what I was using in 1996 and Corel 7 still ran faster than today's version on a Pentium. Ha Ha Ha

4-0 out of 5 stars Another "legitimate" consumer user, whatever that means
I'm not sure what Keith W. means by a legitimate user, but I've been using Corel since version 6. I am also very comfortable with the Adobe products, and Corel is still my application of choice. I find the Corel suite not only intuitive and quick to learn, but also much more suited to a user who wants to customize processes and create unique scripts.

3-0 out of 5 stars IMPROVED.....BUT.....
"CorelDraw Graphics Suite 11 Upgrade" spots an improved interface. All the major components: CorelDraw 11, PhotoPaint 11, and R.A.V.E. 2 have become easier to use, while at the same time donning new graphics capabilities. Still, experienced versatile users who have tried comparable software, will tell you that this software needs to grab a few more items in order to match both "Adobe Illustrator" and "Macromedia FreeHand".
In CorelDraw, the most significant additions are new drawing tools, symbols, and shaping tools; (all of which provide extra flexibility for drawing elements). PhotoPaint received a red-eye removal brush, improved Web capabilities, and a new cutout tool. The R.A.V.E. or Flash animator's text manipulating strength has increased. It also boasts of a library docker for symbols.
However, the fact is that either the equivalent of these enhancements or their superiors are present in the latest "Adobe Illustrator" and "Macromedia FreeHand" suites. Any user who has tested these software will vindicate me. Again, this "CorelDraw Graphics Suite 11" runs slower than both 'Illustrator' and 'FreeHand', which is the main reason why versatile users regard it as being less polished. Another fact about this Corel software is that its hunger for memory is voracious. Don't rely on the recommended 128MB of RAM that is written on its packet. If your PC's RAM is less than 512MB, this software may compel you to buy extra RAM modules; or else, you may not enjoy the luxury of having more than two other Applications open while running it. If you do, your PC may resort to a snail's speed after some minutes, in order to carry on with its rudimentary tasks.
But apart from these few negative issues, this software will serve you well. It is not bad at all! ... Read more
